Lakes and dams in Slovakia

Slnečné jazerá Senec

Slnečné jazerá Senec

Senec

Slnečné jazerá (Sun Lakes) or Senecké jazerá are among the most visited recreation centers in Slovakia. We can find them in the town of Senec. Every year, this location is visited by many families with children, young active holidaymakers, and seniors. The advantage is the low entrance fee, the option to purchase a seasonal pass, and a number of attractions in the area. Slnečné jazerá in Senec are also popular among fishermen, who can pursue their hobby here without any worries.

The lakes were artificially created in 1845, when five separate lakes were formed after gravel dredging. These later merged into one water area with an area of 120 hectares and a depth of up to 12 meters. Since 1919, the place began to be used as a natural swimming area. At that time, it was also known by the name Slovenské Tahiti (Slovak Tahiti).

Today, the resort is divided into three zones - northern, southern, and eastern. The northern side is especially suitable for families with children, as there is an Aquathermal Senec water park with water attractions and a playground for children. However, you will find various attractions for active holidaymakers in every part. You will appreciate the beach volleyball courts, football fields, and tennis courts.

Water sports are a matter of course here. You can practice Zumba and yoga, or explore the surroundings faster on scooters, which you can rent. During the summer, various musical events held directly on the premises are also very popular.

You don't have to go far for other points of interest. Visit Včelársky skanzen (Beekeeping Open-air Museum), Oáza sibírskeho tigra (Siberian Tiger Oasis) in Kostolná pri Dunaji, enjoy adventure flights from Kráľová pri Senci, or an adrenaline rafting trip on the Malý Dunaj river. Book your accommodation at Slnečné jazerá Senec and plan a holiday packed with experiences!

Sigord

Sigord

Kokošovce

Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir is located near the village of Kokošovce, not far from Prešov, surrounded by beautiful nature. When this water area was being built between 1965 and 1967, the primary focus was on flood protection and irrigation for the needs of the local agricultural cooperative. However, this purpose was soon abandoned, and locals began coming here for recreation. Sigord was so popular that the city of Prešov had a pier built there.

Following the floods in 2008, the reservoir was drained due to its inadequate technical condition. The bottom gradually became overgrown with invasive woody plants. The reservoir was renovated between 2011 and 2012, when it was refilled and over a thousand fish were released into it. The two-hectare dam is currently used primarily by fishermen, but swimming is also possible at one's own risk. A boathouse operates by the water, providing not only summer boating but also winter ice skating, and it organizes cultural, sports, and ecological events throughout the year. Pallet seating and fire pits are prepared for visitors within the boathouse area.

The civic association Čavargy contributed to the development of the area, having built the so-called Sigordské koľečko (Sigord Loop) in 2018 with the help of volunteers, which is an educational trail around the reservoir. It includes three information boards that reveal details about the local fauna, as well as new benches with a view of the water surface. A leisurely walk takes about 30 minutes. In the summer, a tourist train also runs on the route Malý MukSigord Racová and back.

The Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir is located about 12 km from the center of Prešov. It is also possible to get here by public transport. If you choose to drive, you can park in the parking lot above the boathouse. A recreational center is located near the water, which also provides dining options.

Indoor swimming with attractions is offered by the nearby Aquapark Delňa. Once you have had enough swimming, there are trips to the surrounding area, where you will encounter several castle ruins: Zbojnícky hrad, Bodoň, Šebeš, and Soľnohrad. You can head to Prešov for culture, which truly offers a bit of everything; you will find the Divadlo Jonáša Záborského theater, the Šarišská galéria gallery, and a Calvary with a view of the city.

If you decide to stay near the Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir, start your search for accommodation directly in Kokošovce, where you can choose from guest houses or cottages. The city of Prešov itself has a wide range of options, where you can book an apartment in the city center or a room in a guest house. Sigord has regained its former popularity and is a place that is lively all year round. Come and experience an interesting holiday here as well.

Zlaté piesky

Zlaté piesky

Bratislava

The Zlaté piesky lake is a very popular natural swimming area in the Ružinov borough of Bratislava. It is a pleasant, peaceful, and quiet location that is becoming increasingly sought-after, precisely because of this natural swimming site. In the middle of the lake, a wooded islet attracts people's attention.

The water surface is suitable for swimming for both adults and children. The width of the lake is approximately 400 m, with a maximum depth of 30 m. The water is exceptionally clean, with no aquatic plants. Vacationers will appreciate the sandy beach on the shore, where it is possible to rent sun loungers, parasols, or equipment for various sports activities on the shore and in the water. Dining options are a matter of course.

Active holidaymakers can play tennis, volleyball, minigolf, or streetball. There are courts for all these sports. Have you tried wakeboarding yet? It will get some adrenaline pumping in your blood, and it is really great fun. Zlaté piesky offers this attraction as well. Of course, the little ones have not been forgotten either. Children are well taken care of at the lake thanks to various programs and attractions. The water slide, beach playground with a sunshade, and the climbing wall are great.

Did you know that on July 28, 1976, an airplane crashed at Zlaté piesky? It was a flight between Prague and Bratislava, and this huge tragedy claimed 76 lives. The regime of the time tried to cover up the accident. Very little visual material was preserved, as members of the Verejná bezpečnosť (Public Security) confiscated camera films from the vacationers who were at the lake at that time. This exceptionally tragic event is described very realistically in the book "Katastrofa letu 001 na Zlatých pieskoch" (The Disaster of Flight 001 at Zlaté piesky).

Summer at Zlaté piesky is carried on waves of fun and vibrant energy. This is thanks to various events, whether cultural or musical. Uprising Reggae Festival and MTV Disco TV are certainly among the most popular.

Kunovská priehrada

Kunovská priehrada

Senica

The Kunov city district of Senica hides a true gem for vacationers to spend their leisure time. It is the Kunovská priehrada reservoir, whose water is suitable for swimming, water sports, and fishing. It is located on the foothills of the Biele Karpaty mountains, which is why the location is also sought after by tourists. However, most often you will meet families with children, groups of friends, or seniors around the reservoir, who head here for active and passive relaxation.

The total area of Kunovská priehrada is 65 ha, so it is not among the smallest. Its depth reaches 2 to 8.5 m. The surroundings are grass-covered and offer an ideal space for, for example, a family picnic. Even if you do not want to go into the water, take at least a book and read it just like that, lying on a blanket. It is the magical power of nature that will recharge your internal batteries.

You can reach Kunovská priehrada from the city very comfortably by bicycle or roller skates. A path set in beautiful nature, leading along the Teplica stream, will serve you for this purpose. Access is also possible on foot or by car, of course, and you do not have to worry about a parking space at all. 300 parking spaces are available to you all year round. When you get to it, you will find yourself in a truly spacious and equipped recreational area.

Changing rooms, social facilities, and, during the summer season, refreshments are waiting for you here. Given that you can also perform various water sports on the reservoir, you will find a boathouse here, where you can also rent a boat or a pedal boat directly. Active individuals will appreciate the volleyball and tennis court, minigolf, Russian skittles, or giant chess. The little ones were also kept in mind; the playground offers sandboxes, swings, and climbing frames.

From the activities in the vicinity, we recommend a walk along the Náučný chodník Senica – Kunovská priehrada (Senica – Kunovská priehrada Educational Trail), which has a total length of 5 km. It will take you approximately 90 minutes, and from the built-in information boards, you will learn interesting facts about preserved original habitats, fauna, flora, and nature conservation. There are several benches on the route where you can rest. In order for you to be able to complete all this and also visit other attractions in Senica and its surroundings, book accommodation near Kunovská priehrada, for example, directly from some of the accommodation Senica page. Do not forget to take your family or friends too; you will experience much more fun and adventures that way.

Zelené pleso

Zelené pleso

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Zelené pleso is one of the most romantic tarns in the Vysoké Tatry mountains. This glacial lake, lying at an altitude of 1551 m a.s.l., was named thanks to the springs that well up at its bottom and cause green spots. However, a more interesting variation is the ancient legend according to which a dazzling green gemstone fell into it from Jastrabej veže tower.

If you were looking on a map, point your finger to the eastern part of the Vysoké Tatry, to the Doliny Bielej vody kežmarskej valley, or the Doliny Zeleného plesa valley. Thanks to a maximum depth of 4.5 m, you can see all the way to the bottom of this moraine tarn from near the shore. With an area of 1.78 ha, it does not belong among the largest tarns, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful.

This turquoise-colored tarn is a popular destination not only for experienced hikers, skiers, and cyclists but also for families with older children or active seniors. Even so, good physical fitness is recommended, as the hike with an elevation gain of 855 meters along the yellow tourist trail is only moderately difficult, yet relatively lengthy. However, if that is not enough for you, the natural continuation of the route is the ascent to Jahňací štít peak or continuing to Skalnaté pleso.

The dominant feature of the view is the well-known "Brnčalka", as the Chata pri Zelenom plese mountain hut is called, which, thanks to its ochre facade, cannot be confused with any other. The history of the first shelter on the site of the current hut dates back to the end of the 1890s. It is open year-round, and if you are planning a challenging hike to the surrounding peaks, it is a suitable place for an overnight stay. Otherwise, do you know about its unusual phenomenon, which is more known from Nordic countries? In the period from October to March, not a single ray of sun touches it. Despite this, it is very popular even during this period.

The starting points for the hike to Zelenému plesu are Tatranské Matliare, the Biela Voda bus stop, or Tatranská Lomnica. For a perfect hiking experience, good planning is necessary, especially if you are traveling with children. So that you are not under time pressure to return home before dark, we recommend booking accommodation nearby in advance. You can find the best offers for accommodation near Zeleného plesa, as well as accommodation Tatranské Matliare or accommodation Tatranská Lomnica, directly on our website.
