Given the era at the time, various restrictions applied. An interesting one was the scheduling of swimming times, which were set for women in the morning and for men in the afternoon.

A historical point of interest is that due to necessary repair work, the first Slovak surface railway track was built here in the 1830s. Tajch Klinger was even depicted on Slovak postage stamps in 2003 as an important technical monument.

In ancient times, Izra, the daughter of a Turkish Grand Vizier, reportedly fell in love with a Hungarian count, who was an enemy. When they were in a boat together with Izra, her father shot the count. Out of grief, Izra jumped into the lake, which forever buried her together with her great love, the Hungarian count.

The location where the lakes are situated belongs to the buffer zone of Chránená krajinná oblasť Vihorlat. This has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. Six permanent springs flow into Morské oko, along with several seasonal ones. Its stable water level is maintained by the Okna stream, which drains all excess water away from the lake. Thanks to this, the entire surrounding area of 108.48 ha has been declared the Národná prírodná rezervácia Morské oko, which is also part of the NATURA 2000 network.

Gabčíkovo is a waterworks facility built on the Dunaj river, near the town of Gabčíkovo, in the Dunajská Streda district. This multipurpose structure is located just about 50 km from Bratislava. The main function of the facility is the generation of electricity, covering about 8% of total consumption in Slovakia and up to 12–15% in Hungary. In addition, it serves as flood protection and regulates the water level of the Dunaj, making the river navigable and allowing the water level to be adjusted even during potential emergency situations.

As early as the 19th century, a plan emerged to divert from the original riverbed to create a permanent and reliable shipping lane. The decision in favor of construction was accelerated by the 1973 oil crisis. Construction of the waterworks began in 1977 following the signing of an international treaty between Slovakia and Hungary. Hungary unilaterally withdrew from constructing its section in 1989 following citizen protests and ceased work in the Nagymaros section. Subsequently, work was carried out only on the Slovak side in a modified form, while construction of the Hungarian section was postponed. Operation of the Slovak part of the facility was put into service in October 1992, and the power plant began operating in 1996. In October 1997, the International Court of Justice ruled that Hungary's withdrawal from the treaty was not justified.

The Gabčíkovo waterworks consists of several parts. The Hrušov reservoir accumulates water for the optimal operation of the hydroelectric power plant. It stands mostly on Slovak territory, with a length of 16 km and a width of 1 to 4 km. The Gabčíkovo dam step consists of two structures: navigation locks on the left side of the river and a hydroelectric power plant on the right. The locks make it possible to overcome an elevation difference of 16 to 23.3 m. The lock control tower is located on a 30-meter pier. Operation of the power plant is fully automated. A 10-meter-wide road bridge is built over the dam step. A 17 km long supply canal connects the Hrušov reservoir and the Gabčíkovo dam step. A 8.2 km long tailrace canal carries water from the hydroelectric power plant back into the Dunaj.

Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir is located near the village of Kokošovce, not far from Prešov, surrounded by beautiful nature. When this water area was being built between 1965 and 1967, the primary focus was on flood protection and irrigation for the needs of the local agricultural cooperative. However, this purpose was soon abandoned, and locals began coming here for recreation. Sigord was so popular that the city of Prešov had a pier built there.

Following the floods in 2008, the reservoir was drained due to its inadequate technical condition. The bottom gradually became overgrown with invasive woody plants. The reservoir was renovated between 2011 and 2012, when it was refilled and over a thousand fish were released into it. The two-hectare dam is currently used primarily by fishermen, but swimming is also possible at one's own risk. A boathouse operates by the water, providing not only summer boating but also winter ice skating, and it organizes cultural, sports, and ecological events throughout the year. The civic association Čavargy contributed to the development of the area, having built the so-called Sigordské koľečko (Sigord Loop) in 2018 with the help of volunteers, which is an educational trail around the reservoir. Evičkino jazero is an artificially built body of water on the outskirts of the village of Štiavnické Bane. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, making it one of the oldest tajchs in the vicinity of Banská Štiavnica. Evička, just like other tajchs, served mining purposes, specifically as a water reservoir for the famous Horná Bieber adit, which is also called the "Mother of All Mines". In 1629, the world's first documented mining blasting took place in this adit, triggering a literal revolution in tunneling.

Currently, the tajch is used for summer recreation and fishing. Access to the lake and the water is seamless, and the water surface is surrounded by gentle slopes where holidaymakers usually sunbathe, engage in sports activities, or just relax in the shade of trees and admire the beauty of the surroundings. The water quality in the lake is regularly checked by the Public Health Authority (Úrad verejného zdravotníctva) and is safe for swimming. Miloslavka is a freshwater lake with an area of 7 ha, located in the cadastral area of the village of Miloslavov, in the Senec district. The location is situated only 5 km from Bratislava. The lake was formed around 1970 when Danube gravel deposits were dredged. A new biotope began to develop in the lake after cleanup works between 1995 and 2000. Since 2002, this water body has been used for fishing purposes. The lake received the name Miloslavka only in 2005.

Fishing at Miloslavka is possible from April to October, always only with the manager's knowledge; a telephone booking and reservation of a specific spot according to the lake's fishing plan are recommended. The Nové Košariská I. lake, also called Veľké Košariská or Veľké jazero Rovinka, is located near the villages of Rovinka and Dunajská Lužná, just 3 km from the Podunajské Biskupice district of Bratislava. Other lakes are also located in this area: Malé Košariská (Nové Košariská II.) and Nové Košariská (gravel pit lake). All three were formed as a result of gravel mining.

Veľké Košariská is 870 metres long and 500 metres wide, consisting of two parts separated by a small peninsula. One of the parts is shallower and surrounded by trees. The second part is deep, separated from the shallow area by a gravel drop-off, and is popular with scuba divers, as it reaches a depth of up to 40 metres very close to the shore. Several species of fish live in the lake; common ones include carp and pike, while catfish, zander, and eels are frequently observed, and freshwater jellyfish occur exceptionally in autumn.

Summer attracts vacationers to Košariská who like to refresh themselves in the crystal-clear water, which is nearly drinkable in quality, as proven by repeated official tests. Not all shores of the lake offer equally good access to the water; the best is from the gravel beach located in the eastern part. The more daring and free-spirited can visit the nudist beach. The remaining shores are steep, built up with holiday cottages in some places, and therefore often inaccessible. The aforementioned Kráter lake has a diameter of approximately 20 m, an almost circular shape, a maximum depth of 3 m, all spanning a water surface area of 300 m². As the only one among the Ružbašské krátery, it is filled with 24 °C warm water, specifically, thermal mineral water rich in calcium. Since 1967, it has been listed among the protected natural formations of Slovakia, and swimming in it is strictly prohibited for this reason.

Another one of the local craters is Kaplnkový kráter, located near the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes. Thanks to its dimensions of 51 × 32 × 4.5 m, it ranks among the largest formations of its kind in our country. Also worth mentioning is the crater named Jama smrti. Like the others (excluding Kráter), this one is a waterless crater and is also known under the name Smerdžonka. And why such a goosebumps-inducing name? Carbon dioxide escapes from it, causing suffocation and loss of consciousness. Falling into the pit has already claimed the lives of several domestic animals belonging to local residents, as well as rodents and birds.

Many tourists bypass the craters because they do not find them interesting without water. However, that is a shame, as they certainly belong among unique natural phenomena. The Vodná nádrž Pod Bukovcom reservoir is located near the village of Bukovec, in the Košice region. The reservoir was artificially built in the 1960s. In the summer season, it attracts many visitors thanks to exceptionally clean water and a pleasant temperature of around 20 °C.

Visitors to the reservoir can thus relax undisturbed in a beautiful natural environment, on two maintained beaches, and take a dip in crystal-clear water. The lower-lying one is Dubník I, which also features a small island. The beginning of the dam's construction dates back to 1953. In addition to the reservoir, the Klubový dom house, access roads, and a parking lot were built. Its commissioning took place on May 9, 1954. Exactly one year later, Klubový dom was opened; this former boathouse no longer exists today, with only concrete foundations remaining. Originally, only a pond dam was constructed here, but later the project was changed, and the dam was subsequently built up to its current level, reaching full completion only in 1964. The crest of the dam is 126 m long and 6 m wide, with an asphalt road running along it. Dubník I covers an area of 18 ha and reaches a maximum depth of 6.67 m.

Vodná nádrž Dubník I has been a popular summer recreation area for years, which is why a beach and necessary services were established here. During the summer, not only swimming is popular, but also other water sports, with paddleboat and boat rental offering its services as well. Locals would rather recommend Dubník II for swimming, where the water is said to be cleaner, although access to the water is more demanding. In both reservoirs, swimming is at your own risk.

One of the most sought-after artificial lakes in the Banskobystrický kraj region is undoubtedly Hodrušské jazero. Vrbické pleso, which adorns the Demänovská dolina, is the largest natural lake in the Nízke Tatry. This body of water at an altitude of 1,113 meters above sea level is of glacial moraine origin and thus resembles tarns in the Vysoké Tatry. At its deepest point, a depth of 8 meters was measured. The lake has been a nature monument since 1975 and is currently protected by the fifth, i.e., highest, level of protection.

The walk starts in the village of Demänovská Dolina at the Jasná - Biela Púť signpost, and it is easy to park nearby. A yellow-marked trail leads from the signpost to the tarn, taking only about 5 minutes to reach it. Around the lake, which measures 115 meters in length and 62 meters in width, runs an undemanding hiking trail. Walking it takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on your walking pace or how long you sit on the benches and admire the photogenic mountain surroundings. It is an ideal walk for families with children. Information boards inform tourists about the origin of the tarn as well as its fauna. Benches by the lake are a matter of course, and several gazebos stand here as well. Vrbické pleso does not have to be your final destination. Interesting hiking trails start right from it. It is possible to climb to the Rozhľadňa na Ostredku or to Krakova hoľu. The yellow trail leads from the tarn to Tri Vody or all the way to Sedlo Poľany, while the blue trail leads tourists to the Demänovská jaskyňa slobody.
