Historická budova SND

Historická budova SND

Bratislava

The Historická budova SND is one of the landmarks in Bratislava. This Neo-Renaissance building on Hviezdoslavovo námestie is currently the seat of the Slovenské národné divadlo. You can come to enjoy opera, ballet, or drama in this unique space. Rest assured that a fantastic experience awaits you here.

In Bratislava – Staré Mesto, a building housing a city theater, built by Count Juraj Csáky, stood on the site of this historical building as early as 1776. The current Historická budova SND was constructed based on designs by architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. They built over 50 buildings across Europe in an eclectic style. The building was completed in 1886, and the actors who first stepped onto the boards that mean the world were from Hungary and Germany. They performed as guests on the stage until 1920.

In 1920, the Slovenské národné divadlo began writing its history. Operas, ballets, and drama plays were presented to audiences until the 1950s. Subsequently, after a hall for drama was established, the Historická budova SND was reserved for opera and ballet. The theater has undergone several renovations. The most fundamental one was carried out in 1972. Since then, only certain parts have been renovated.

The building will captivate you at first sight. Its exterior is grand, preserved in an eclectic style. The centerpiece consists of 5 busts of prominent personalities located on its facade. Originally, there were original busts of F. Liszt, W. Shakespeare, J. W. Goethe, and two Hungarian writers, J. Katona and M. Vörösmarty. In 1936, they were taken down during repairs, and to prevent their destruction, they were placed in the Slovenská národná galéria. Currently, there are copies on the facade, where a bust of W. A. Mozart stands instead of the bust of Vörösmarty. In front of the building, the artistically valuable Ganymedova fontána will also catch your attention.

You can visit the Historická budova SND anytime during the theater season from September to the end of June. Performances are usually held every day on a stage that is 18 m wide, 17.5 m deep, and 21.3 m high. Overall, it can provide a perfect theater experience for approximately 600 people. Therefore, if you choose one of the offered performances from the current repertoire, rest assured that you will leave full of emotions and impressions from professional acting performances. Divadlo Andreja Bagara Nitra

Divadlo Andreja Bagara Nitra

Nitra

Among the significant personalities who contributed to the development of art is also the artist Andrej Bagar, after whom the theater in Nitra is named. Divadlo Andreja Bagara v Nitre belongs among one of the largest and most modern buildings in Slovakia, where you can watch amazing artistic performances of our professional actors.

The history of the theater began to be written back in 1833, when the first Nitra theater managed to welcome up to 360 visitors into its premises. The building of this theater stood here until a bomb strike destroyed it during World War II. However, even these wartime conditions did not prevent the spread of culture, and the theater artists moved into the premises of the TJ Sokol gym. The activities of the theater persisted here for more than 60 years. In 1979, the actors returned back to the Nitrianske krajové divadlo, which was named after Andrej Bagar.

The theater currently focuses mainly on drama, but its premises can be transformed for performances of opera, operetta, and ballet. It consists of two halls,  one with a capacity of 577 seats and the second, smaller one, which is an experimental studio for a 150-member audience. In the repertoire of this theater, you will find musicals in addition to drama plays. In the early evening hours, its large hall regularly fills up with people in beautiful gowns, craving an artistic experience and at the same time relaxation from the worries of everyday days.

The theater world is not only about acting, it is also about education. A library that operates directly on the premises of the theater serves these purposes. Students, amateur ensembles, as well as the general public can study dramatic texts and specialized literature here. This library is the only library in Slovakia specializing in theater and drama outside of Bratislava. It has more than 6,000 titles in its collection.

On the theater stage, you can also experience various performances of musical bodies, ensembles, broadcasts of television recordings, or shows. Festivals, which are also attended by visitors and theater artists from abroad, are popular formats as well. Among the most significant is the international theater festival Divadelná Nitra. A theater restaurant and a café, where you will find a diverse offer of food and drinks, are also available on the premises of the theater. Their services are also utilized when organizing formal receptions.
