Tomášovský výhľad

Tomášovský výhľad

Spišské Tomášovce

Tomášovský výhľad is located on the southern slope of Ludmanka, at an altitude of 667 m above sea level, in Slovenský raj. It is an impressive rock outcrop of a terraced shape with an overhang high above the Hornád river. From the top, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Prielom Hornádu, Čertova Sihoť, the valley of Biely potok, as well as the Vysoké Tatry mountains. The ascent to it is not overly demanding, but the reward in the form of the most beautiful view in the Slovenský raj region is well deserved.

A group of climbers from Spišská Nová Ves, consisting of Brnčal, Huba, and Leschinský, was the first to conquer the wall of Tomášovský výhľad on October 8, 1938. Since then, the spot has been swarming with tourists, as everyone wants to enjoy this unforgettable view at least once. If you manage to arrive at a time when you are alone at the viewpoint, enjoy the unique atmosphere of the place. It is just you with your thoughts, a deep abyss below you, wild nature all around, silence, and a special sense of peace.

The limestone massif of Tomášovský výhľad has long been used as a climbing training ground, so you may notice steel pitons at the top. Currently, there are around 100 known climbing routes of various difficulty levels that can be used to conquer the steep wall. Rock climbing competitions are also held here. Directly below the rock terrace lies the lesser-known Michalova džura cave.

The starting point for the hike is the parking lot in the village of Čingov. From there, you will follow the yellow hiking trail, which will lead you past the Pomník Slovenského raja monument and a chalet settlement all the way to the top. You will overcome a certain incline and in about an hour (or even less via some routes), you will arrive at the spot. The entire route is 3.5 km long with an elevation gain of 235 m. It is not uncommon to pass families with young children or groups of seniors during the hike. Another option is to arrive from Spišské Tomášovce along the green hiking trail, which is considered the easiest route. Interesting routes also lead from Smižany, Ďurkovec, and Spišská Nová Ves. Cyclists will also appreciate the marked yellow MTB cycling route leading from the village of Spišské Tomášovce. Anyone with enough stamina should try the loop trail through Prielom Hornádu, which is among the most attractive routes.

Living in Slovakia and not seeing Tomášovský výhľad is like being Slovak and never tasting bryndzové halušky (sheep cheese dumplings). You might hesitate at first, but then you cannot get enough. Slovenský raj and its surroundings are a lifelong passion, where tourists come to find inner peace and draw the purest energy from nature. Book a stay in the vicinity of Tomášovský výhľad, for example on the accommodation Čingov or accommodation Spišské Tomášovce pages, and enjoy perfect views of our beautiful Mother Nature.

Hybická tiesňava

Hybická tiesňava

Východná

Visitors to Horný Liptov will experience the atmosphere of rainforests in the impressive Hybická tiesňava gorge, which was declared a national natural monument due to its uniqueness. This unique natural phenomenon, falling within the Tatranský národný park, is located north of the distinctive village of Východná in the Liptovský Mikuláš district. The beautiful canyon-like valley was shaped by the inconspicuous Hybica stream in the soft limestone bedrock. For lovers of picturesque natural scenery, this little-visited place will become a paradise on earth.

This unique piece of nature combines steep stone crags rising to the sky, an impressive forest scenery rich in rare species of fauna and flora, and a pleasantly murmuring stream, which was the painter of this beauty in the past. The gorge also fascinates visitors with its high humidity, evoking the atmosphere of rainforests. A huge benefit of this place is its very low visitor numbers, preserving the naturalness and pristine character of the environment. This is mainly due to the fact that no marked hiking trail leads to Hybická tiesňava. You can only reach this breathtaking spot via a dirt road from the village of Východná or through the forest from the nearby village of Podbanské.

An interesting fact is that Hybická tiesňava is only 4 m wide at its narrowest point. In contrast, the towering overhanging crags lining the passage through the canyon reach an incredible height of 15–20 m in some places. The passage through the gorge currently leads largely through the streambed. Activists plan to build a hiking trail that should lead in the future from the birthplace of the famous movie outlaw, the village of Hybe. The trail through the gorge itself should be 3 km long.

If you decide on a vacation in Liptov this year, be sure to bring high-quality hiking boots with you and set out to explore this unique place. You can combine hiking in this location with a visit to Farma Východná or the popular Folklórny festival Východná, which takes place regularly on the first weekend of July. Your vacation in this region will certainly be made more pleasant by a wide range of accommodation options near Hybická tiesňava. You can make use of cottages and chalets in Východná and its surroundings, or accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš, which includes a wide selection of guesthouses and hotels. A vacation in Liptov is an offer of unusual experiences and relaxation directly surrounded by unique nature.

Bešeňovské travertíny

Bešeňovské travertíny

Bešeňová

A unique creation of nature, Bešeňovské travertíny, represent interesting limestone formations that were formed by the precipitation of mineral and thermal springs. They are located in the Liptov region, near the village of Bešeňová, in the district of Liptovský Mikuláš. Beautiful travertine mounds, cascades, and other uniquely coloured formations stretch across an area of 3.18 ha. The play of colours in these unique natural phenomena transitions from almost white, through yellow and orange, to red or brown. Mineral water still flows down the travertine cascades, adding a beautiful shine to this natural spectacle.

Bešeňová is one of the few places in Slovakia and even in Europe that can boast the occurrence of freshwater limestone, or travertine. This is formed by the precipitation of water with a high calcium carbonate content under suitable temperature conditions. And since the water in Bešeňová contains magnesium, sulphur, and iron in addition to calcium, Bešeňovský travertín attracts visitors not only with its interesting formations, but also with its beautiful colours. The travertine field is located a few hundred metres north of the village and consists of four separate units: Červená terasa, Kaplnka, Bazén, and Biela terasa. Its easy accessibility makes it a great day-trip location for anyone who enjoys unusual natural phenomena. Tourists, active seniors, and families with children alike enjoy coming here.

The beauty of the travertine captivated not only visitors to Liptov, but architects as well. Polished travertine slabs adorn the Univerzita Komenského building in Bratislava, as well as the Palác národov in Geneva, Switzerland. It was precisely the golden-yellow travertine that was used for these buildings, which you can admire in its natural beauty at the edge of the quarry, in the Kaplnka section. Bešeňovský travertín was also used in buildings in many other European countries. We can mention, for example, France, Germany, or Belgium. This indicates that we can undoubtedly call this natural phenomenon of Liptov world-class.

Liptov repeatedly convinces us with its natural beauties that it is well worth spending a holiday in this region. If you decide to take a trip to Bešeňovské travertíny, be sure to combine it with a visit to the nearby Archeoskanzen Havránok, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Liptov, or with a swim in the extremely popular Vodný park Bešeňová. Days full of unique experiences in Liptov will surely be topped off with perfect relaxation. The accommodation offer near Bešeňovské travertíny is truly varied. Accommodation in Bešeňová includes cosy guest houses, as well as popular cottages and chalets. Accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš in turn appeals with excellent accessibility to local attractions and popular trip spots. Enjoy your holiday in the beautiful surroundings of Liptov this year.

Andezitové kamenné more

Andezitové kamenné more

Malá Lehota

In the village of Malá Lehota, in the district of Žarnovica, lies the unique geological-geomorphological formation Andezitové kamenné more. Thanks to its uniqueness and scientific value, the area was declared a national natural monument in 1975. You should definitely not miss a visit to this natural attraction; add it to your list alongside other attractions of the Banskobystrický kraj that are also worth it. We recommend wearing sturdy footwear so that, besides a great experience, you do not bring home a sprained ankle, for example.

The stone sea is formed by massive dark andesites and was probably created more than 14 million years ago, in the Quaternary period. During stormy volcanic activity, a massive lava flow with distinct rock forms was created. Since the air temperature at that time dropped even below minus 60 degrees, the lava flow solidified quickly, which resulted in its later disintegration into irregular polygonal blocks. Although it may not seem like it, individual stones weigh well over half a ton. A special feature of this natural monument is the rich occurrence of dispersed quartz particles that mixed into the lava flow while still "hot" and today glitter like diamonds against the dark forest background. If you visit the area during a beautiful sunny day, you will feel like you are by a real sea, because the shimmering quartz will resemble the look of a shimmering water surface in the sun.

You can easily get to this world-significance natural monument from the village of Malá Lehota or along the popular Náučný chodník Vojšín educational trail. It has its beginning in the Stará Huta settlement, which is a part of Nová Baňa. At its end, the stone sea awaits you, which is certainly worth the walk along the educational trail. It is hidden behind coniferous trees, near a small bus stop. Andezitové more, with an area of 30 x 100 m, ranks among the smaller stone seas located in Slovakia, yet despite this, its size will astound many of you.

Find accommodation near Andezitové kamenné pole and set out into the diverse nature at the crossroads of three regions, Banskobystrický, Trenčiansky, and Nitriansky. Nice views and a great stay combined with a visit to this natural unique feature are offered by a hotel in the Tribeč mountain range, cottages and chalets in the villages of Ponitrie, or any other suitable accommodation in Malá Lehota.

This lowest, warmest, and driest place in Slovakia was known as Kováčovské kopce in the past. It is formed by volcanic rocks, mainly volcanic conglomerates, sandstones, and breccias. Thanks to its composition, you can find amazing rock formations here in the form of a rock tower, a rock window, or their various conical shapes. The southern slopes of the mountain range have steep rock walls. Getting to one of them is possible via a marked hiking trail leading from Kamenica nad Hronom. During the walk, you can observe wonderful floodplain forests. Listen to the chirping of birds, relax your mind in a unique natural environment, and recharge your inner energy for new days. In the distance, you can spot several attractions of Štúrovo. From here, you can also see Most Márie Valérie or the thermal bath. In favorable weather conditions, Hungarian Ostrihom (Esztergom) with its basilica will also reveal itself to you.

The viewpoint was declared a national nature reserve precisely because of the richest thermophilic flora in Slovakia. Nature lovers will notice several species of protected plants during their journey to it, which you will not easily see elsewhere in Central Europe. An attractive ornamental grass called kavyľa (feather grass) might also catch your interest.

It is wonderful to plan a bit of exercise during your stay in Štúrovo or its surroundings. Set out to explore the beauties of Podunajsko. After the hike, a city tour aboard the tourist road train will be the most enjoyable for you. It is entirely up to you which of its three circuits you choose. You can also walk to Most Márie Valérie from the viewpoint on foot. It connects us with our neighbors. Do not miss a tour of the Mestské múzeum v Štúrove museum either, or feel free to venture into the premises of the Mestská galéria Štúrovo gallery. Červená skala is located at an altitude of 690 m above sea level. It is part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt (karpatský bradlový systém). It consists of limestones formed back in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, an incredible 195 to 65 million years ago. Remarkably, the rock was likely a deep-sea sediment, standing today as proof that Podbiel and the adjacent area were once submerged under the sea. Fossilized imprints of ammonites near the information board below Červená skala further prove this. Ammonites were shelled marine cephalopods that went extinct 65 million years ago.

Červená skala is a true magnet for tourists. The ascent is easy and takes approximately 40 minutes. The starting point is the village of Podbiel, from where you set out along the blue-marked hiking trail. The final climb to the top of the rock leads up wooden steps. And what would a magical rock like Červená skala be without an interesting local legend? In Podbiel, it is said that besides animal fossils, a fossilized human body was also found on Červená skala. However, the finders broke it apart out of curiosity to see what lay inside. A portion of the head saved by a local teacher was then transferred to a museum in Budapest. Yet no one knows exactly which museum it was supposed to be, so the legend remains just a legend. However, Červená skala is very real. If you do not believe it, come see for yourself directly in Podbiel.

And once you visit this picturesque corner of Orava, be sure not to miss a trip to another interesting crag, Biela skala. It is a cliff made of Cretaceous limestones, on top of which a prehistoric hillfort once stood in the past. Or would you prefer a museum visit? The small Podbielanské etnografické múzeum will guide you through the history of this distinctive Orava village via its collection. And if you still crave a bit of adventure, head out from Podbiel towards Zuberec. Along the way, you will come across a location where you can try an experiential Jazda na tanku (tank ride). Gánovce

On an inconspicuous meadow in the middle of a village beneath the Tatras, you will find a paleontological site of world importance. You might still remember Gánovce, located in the Poprad district, from history classes as the site where a travertine cast of the brainpart of a Neanderthal skull was found. Gánovské travertíny and Gejzír were declared a national natural monument in 1972. Although many tourists coming to this region have no idea about this rare place amidst a green meadow, visiting a location where natural wealth meets the breath of ancient times is certainly worth it.

The Gánovské travertíny reach a height of approximately two meters. Travertiine is a type of limestone created by the precipitation of freshwater thermal springs. Right at this spot in the 1920s, a blaster during travertine mining found a cast of part of a Neanderthal skull that contained the brain. He initially considered the cast to be an animal skull. He handed it over to an employee of the Národné múzeum v Prahe, unaware of the importance and significance of his discovery. Gánovské travertíny subsequently became an extraordinarily important site of fossil fauna and flora as well.

Not far from the travertine mound, there is a geyser that spouts thermal water every 30 minutes. Thermal springs with healing mineral water have been known in Gánovce since 1549, when Gánovské kúpele were mentioned for the first time. Today they operate under the name Aqua Spa Gánovce, and you can combine a visit to them in your trip itinerary with a walk to Gánovské travertíny and Gejzír.

It is a rock at the narrowest point of the Dunajec, where the water reaches a depth of up to 12 meters. On your wanderings, you will also come across the Skalné veže siedmich mníchov rock towers and the legend-shrouded Ostrá skala, from which disobedient subjects were allegedly thrown into the turbulent waters of the Dunajec in ancient times. At the end of the gorge, the karst spring "Storočná voda" gushes forth, which never freezes. Legend has it that whoever drinks from it will live to be a hundred years old. Do you dare to take a sip too?

The educational trail ends at the state border with Poland, in the village of Lesnica. Definitely do not leave without experiencing the Splav Dunajca raft ride. Korňanský ropný prameň

Korňanský ropný prameň

Korňa

Have you ever heard of the geological rarity located in the Kysuce region? It is a European unique feature, a natural crude oil spring. Come and see Korňanský ropný prameň, which is the only one of its kind in Slovakia. You can find this "black gold" spring in the picturesque village of Korňa, near the town of Turzovka. It is a paraffinic type of oil with a low oil content and a smaller amount of hydrocarbons with asphaltic-resinous substances. The spring spans a small area of 0.171 ha.

It is a natural surface oil seep with occasional methane vapors. The oil accumulates in a small pool with a diameter of 1.5–2 meters. Despite being high-quality crude oil, surrounding test drillings, which began back in the 19th century, did not reveal sufficient quantities to make industrial extraction commercially viable. In total, 5 drillings were conducted, the first in 1900 and the last between 1929 and 1933. From the drillings carried out during those times, only 15–16 wagonloads were extracted in total.

In difficult times, during World War II, residents of the village of Korňa used oil from this seep as fuel for lighting, heating, and lubricating vehicles. It was even used to treat skin diseases in cattle. In 1984, Korňanský ropný prameň was declared a natural monument. You can find it at the beginning of the village of Korňa, accessible from a parking lot along the main road, located approximately 150 m away. The characteristic odor and mysterious bubbling will also guide you to the spring.

If this extraordinary place has caught your interest, plan a trip to Kysuce and discover other interesting attractions, of which there are plenty in the area. Book your stay today. You can find a rich selection of accommodation near Korňanský ropný prameň on our accommodation Korňa page. In addition to this rarity, you will find another gem here, the largest linden tree in Kysuce, which grows in the village of Korňa, in the Vígľaš area. If you plan your holiday during the winter season, a great place for skiing is undoubtedly the Turzovka - Bukovina ski resort. We wish you a successful holiday full of unforgettable experiences.

Dudinské travertíny

Dudinské travertíny

Dudince

The unique Dudinské travertíny are located in the well-known spa town of Dudince, in the Krupina district. They were formed by the precipitation of water around mineral springs in the park of the spa complex. A nature trail with seven stops will guide you through this national natural monument, which is managed by the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic Štiavnické vrchy. Here you can inspect the travertine field as well as a 10-meter-high travertine mound.

During your walk through the park, right near the local amphitheater, you will encounter the so-called Roman baths, also called Močidlá. This is the most famous and interesting formation from the entire system, referring to the presence of ancient Romans in our territory. The extensive field is formed by 32 travertine pools. On their walls, you can notice fossilized grasses, leaves, and tree branches. Your next stop during the walk through the travertines will be a formation called Travertínová terasa. This is the youngest terraced-shaped part, located on the bank of the Štiavnica river.

Furthermore, you can stop at the Spa Spring. The aforementioned travertine mound with a respectable height reaching 10 m was named this way. It is rumored that another formation once became a silent witness to the cruelty of the Tatars in our territory. That is precisely why it was named Tatar Travertine. In the past, the so-called Hostečný prameň was used to treat rheumatism. Today, it is also an interesting travertine formation. The romantic name of another segment, Šípová Ruženka, suggests that beautiful wild roses used to grow in the surroundings long ago. Today, an asymmetric travertine mound stands here instead of them. The last one, Eye Spring, was considered miraculous healing water in the past.

The spa town of Dudince can boast a truly unique spring of healing mineral water. You may not have even known that water of a similar composition can be found within Europe only in French Vichy. Therefore, besides touring the travertines, we definitely recommend not missing a visit to the Dudince spa or the popular thermal swimming pool Dudinka. After pleasant water relaxation, you might fancy a glass of quality wine. In that case, make sure to visit the historic cave cellar offering wine tasting.

If you have not visited this interesting corner of Slovakia yet, we recommend booking accommodation near the Dudinské travertíny right now. Accommodation in Dudince and its immediate surroundings excels primarily in a wide range of cottages and chalets, guaranteeing privacy and excellent accessibility to local attractions. Let yourself be invited on a journey to discover the beauties and wealth of our picturesque country.

Biela vyvieračka

Biela vyvieračka

Slavec

The Slovenský kras National Park, on its territory, besides a quantity of beautiful limestone canyons and surface and underground karst formations, hides a copious water spring called Biela vyvieračka. It is located by the road opposite the fairytale Gombasecká jaskyňa, whose passages are decorated with sinter tubular stalactite straws. A marked hiking trail of approximately 1.5 kilometers will lead you to the karst spring from the village of Slavec. If you long for an easy hike with refreshment at the end, head out to Biela vyvieračka, which is also known under the name Margitin prameň.

The Náučný chodník Gombasek educational trail will guide you through several attractive places in the surroundings of Gombasecká jaskyňa. The seventh stop is precisely Biela vyvieračka. In the past, in an effort to increase the output of the spring, the water source was impounded by a high wall set into the slope. Water with a temperature of 6.2–12 °C flows to the surface through a metal pipe positioned about 1 meter above the ground. The rest of the natural spring flows underneath through the base of the wall, which is currently no longer watertight. During periods of high water levels, an abundant part of the flow passes over the overflow wall, creating an interesting scenery of a waterfall emerging from underground.

While exploring the karst spring, you will certainly be intrigued by the freshwater limestone, the so-called tufa, which was formed by the precipitation of chemogenic sediments below the springhead. Karst springs are a traditional home to rare plant species such as yellow anemone, yellow star-of-Bethlehem, or Waldsteinia ternata. If you get lucky, you will also come across charming and rare representatives of fauna, including the legally protected spotted salamander. In the afternoon, take a trip to Rožňava and indulge in water relaxation in the pools of Kúpalisko Rožňava. If you prefer active rest and would like to learn more about the history of the Rožňava district, visit the Historická expozícia Baníckeho múzea and the Galéria Baníckeho múzea. In the early evening, check into a family guesthouse and plan trips around Gemer. Top accommodation near Biela vyvieračka can easily be booked via the accommodation in Slavec page. Be sure to add Kaštieľ Betliar, Hrad Krásna Hôrka, and the unique Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa cave to your holiday list.

Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta

Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta

Veľká Lodina

Most of us would likely locate a natural landmark named Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta near Jánošík's birthplace, in the Malá Fatra mountain range. However, on the map, we will move all the way east, to Slovenské Rudohorie. This unique natural viewpoint is situated in the cadastral area of the village of Veľká Lodina towards Kysak, in the district of Košice - okolie. It is the oldest rock climbing area near Košice and a popular tourist destination with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Jánošíkova bašta is an impressive limestone-dolomite rock with a height of 45–50 metres. Its summit reaches an altitude of 523 m above sea level, and its slopes drop steeply down into the valley of the Hornád river. Climbing in this area began even before the First World War, offering climbers dozens of moderately challenging routes. Tourists can reach this spot along easy, marked trails from the villages of Veľká Lodina and Kysak.

The rocky summits and outcrops represent a natural viewpoint offering a beautiful panorama of the wider surroundings. Spread out before your eyes will be the Hornád valley, Slanské vrchy, the ruins of Hrad Kysak, as well as the Košicko-bohumínska železničná trať railway line. The surrounding area provides picturesque spots for relaxation or a outdoor picnic. The surrounding forests are filled with wild berries, mushrooms, blueberries, cranberries, and strawberries. The entire natural area is rich in dense forests and spacious meadow cover. Everywhere is peace and quiet.

An interesting fact is that the rock named after our national hero was originally called Košútova bašta. It received its first name after the Hungarian politician and fighter for Hungarian independence, Ľudovít Košút. It was renamed to Jánošíkova bašta only after the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic in 1918.

If you feel like taking a walk through beautiful nature or are actively involved in rock climbing, be sure not to miss the opportunity to conquer Jánošíkova bašta in eastern Slovakia. You can combine a trip here with relaxation at Ružínska priehrada or with a visit to the largest zoo in Central Europe, Zoologická záhrada Košice.
