Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici is an impressive Baroque sacred complex ranking among the most beautiful in all of Europe. It is situated on Scharffenberg hill, translated as Ostrý vrch, at an altitude of 726 m above sea level. It was created at a time when Banská Štiavnica belonged to the largest and most important free royal towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. It was precisely these favorable economic conditions that drove the development of the town culturally as well. Thanks to this, Kalvária Banská Štiavnica was built on the initiative of the Jesuit František Perger.

The foundation stone of the Horný kostol, one of the 22 structures of the calvary, was laid and solemnly blessed on September 14, 1744. The church, also referred to as the "German" church, was completed in 1745, when it was also consecrated. The rest of the complex was gradually built and subsequently consecrated as well. It took seven years, exactly until September 14, 1751. The construction was made possible thanks to financial donations from townspeople. The most prominent among them have their coats of arms placed on the facades of the chapels. On Trinity Sunday in 1751, the calvary was even visited by Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine himself.

Despite the construction of the calvary during the peak of the Baroque period, the structures maintained appropriate restraint. Their appearance was not distracting and primarily encouraged the inner reflection and contemplation of pilgrims. The entire complex consists of 17 stations (chapels), 3 churches (Dolný kostol, Sväté schody, Horný kostol), the Ecce Homo station (dungeon), and the Holy Sepulchre (Svätý hrob). The chapels are characterized by an unusual arrangement, as the story of Jesus begins in Nazareth. This is precisely what makes the Banská Štiavnica calvary exceptional.

The first three chapels are preparatory, leading to Dolný kostol. From there, the path continues to the seventh chapel and subsequently to Sväté schody, from where the path forks. The chapels on the left side depict the condemnation and torture of Jesus, ending with the scene of his crucifixion in Horný kostol. You walk around Svätý hrob and return along the other side, where the chapels depict the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The statuary of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is the culmination of the entire pilgrimage, located down below again, near Dolný kostol.

As is often the case with buildings, they require reconstruction over time, and the Banská Štiavnica calvary was no exception. The chapels were reconstructed for the first time in 1894. When the coup came in 1948, the ownership of the calvary passed to the state, which resulted in its gradual deterioration. Between 1978 and 1981, the state funded repairs that were mostly carried out by volunteers from the ranks of local believers. The Velvet Revolution probably had the greatest impact on the calvary; its decorations were stolen and subsequently sold off, and the buildings were devastated. What could be saved was relocated to Slovenské banské múzeum located at Starý zámok. Currently, visitors can view these items during the "Kalvária v azyle" exhibition. In 1993, Banská Štiavnica along with the calvary was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The year 2007 was marked by the calvary's inclusion in the list of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world. It was threatened with complete destruction, but since 2008, an extensive reconstruction has been underway to save this unique place. The buildings are being gradually restored; the reconstruction of Dolný kostol was completed first in 2013, followed by some chapels, the amphitheater, sculptural production, and in 2018, Horný kostol as well.

The calvary is among the popular spots in Banská Štiavnica. However, it is not visited only by believers, although pilgrimages, Holy Masses, or various other cultural events are often held here. Tourists are also interested in the history of the site, its flawless architectural design, the painting and artistic craft underlining the details, as well as the overall setting of the location into the natural environment, with which it creates perfect harmony. Dóm svätej Alžbety

Dóm svätej Alžbety

Košice

Dóm svätej Alžbety is an impressive structure that represents the city of Košice. This church is preeminent not only because it is the largest in Slovakia, but certainly also one of the most beautiful. Many a tourist, young or old, gazes at the Gothic cathedral in silent awe.

Dóm svätej Alžbety is a Roman Catholic church and serves as the parish church of the Farnosť svätej Alžbety in Košice. You will find it on Hlavná ulica in Slovakia's second-largest city, right in the old town of Košice. Its area covers a respectable 1,200 m². Construction of the cathedral began at the end of the 14th century and was completed at the beginning of the 15th century.

The church is dedicated to St. Elizabeth as the patron saint of the city of Košice. However, the original church that stood on this site, mentioned as early as the 11th century, was dedicated to St. Michael. It was rededicated to Elizabeth only after German settlement in Košice. Following the church's first fire in 1380, the decision was made to build a magnificent cathedral worthy of the medieval city at that time. The church is built in the Gothic style, but elements of the original Romanesque style can also be found here.

The medieval merchants and craftsmen of Košice not only contributed to the construction but also donated to it financially on a regular basis. The cathedral was built with the support of the ruler of the time, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and the Papal Curia. Over the centuries, it underwent several restorations due to war and fires. Today, Dóm svätej Alžbety has an outer length of 60 meters and a width of 36 meters. The main tower, also nicknamed Žigmundova veža, measures more than 59 meters. The tower houses bells and the mechanism of the large church clock.

Inside Dóm svätej Alžbety, you will find several altars. However, the most beautiful and precious one is unequivocally the main altar of St. Elizabeth. It is the only surviving medieval altar with two pairs of wings and a triple composition cycle of Gothic paintings, totaling 48 panel paintings. The church earned another "first" with its double spiral staircase, which is the oldest surviving one in Europe. It is assumed to have had a purely decorative character, as it is very narrow.

Dóm svätej Alžbety is open to the public. Masses are held here in Slovak and Hungarian, as well as in Latin. Guided tours of certain parts of the church, such as Žigmundova veža, Kaplnka svätého Michala, or Rákociho krypta, are available for a fee. Visiting the church when a concert by the Štátna filharmónia Košice or the Medzinárodný orgánový festival occasionally takes place is a truly unique experience.

In addition to its magnificent cathedral, Košice attracts visitors with other sights. We have prepared tips for trips in Košice on our portal. Drevený artikulárny kostol Svätý Kríž

Drevený artikulárny kostol Svätý Kríž

Svätý Kríž

Drevený artikulárny evanjelický kostol in Svätý Kríž belongs among the largest wooden structures in Central Europe. It is located in Liptov, on the border of the cadastral areas of the villages of Svätý Kríž and Lazisko, in the district of Liptovský Mikuláš. Thanks to its capacity of almost 6,000 visitors, it ranks among frequently visited monuments. Divine services are held here regularly.

The church has an interesting 43 m long cross-shaped floor plan. It was originally built in 1693 in Paludza, but between 1974 and 1982 it was relocated to Svätý Kríž, where a ceremonial consecration subsequently took place in August 1982. The church in Svätý Kríž is the final artistic expression of Slovak wooden architecture, and it is no exaggeration to write that it is likely also the most significant. In the interior, you will be immediately captivated by the wooden Baroque altar dating from 1693, featuring a painting of the Transfiguration of Christ. The pulpit is also considered unique, standing on a log base right next to a Baroque angel that appears to support it. Both of these gems, the altar and the pulpit, are the work of the Kežmarok woodcarver J. Lerch.

The extraordinary atmosphere of the place is complemented by the ceiling. Two-story choir galleries decorated with biblical paintings, along with a Venetian glass chandelier, create perfect harmony and fit flawlessly into the church's interior. The organ and a stone baptismal font are additional indispensable parts of the interior. In the exterior, an inseparable pair with the church is formed by the belfry, consisting of a freestanding wooden tower. It was added only later, in 1781. New bells were installed in the tower between 1921 and 1922.

You do not have to be a believer to have something to be thankful for. Believe us, giving thanks for your family, health, food, a roof over your head, work, or anything else that comes to mind assumes a completely different dimension when spoken in this church. And if the rays of the setting sun caress the beautiful Baroque furnishings inside at that moment, you will believe in miracles. The swell of emotion meeting at such a moment feels like magic.

You simply have to experience that feeling for yourself. Book accommodation near Drevený artikulárny kostol Svätý Kríž, for instance on the accommodation in Svätý Kríž or accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš page, and come discover Liptov from a different angle. This picturesque region offers numerous sacral monuments and hiking opportunities; their advantage is also that they are available almost year-round and in most cases completely free of charge. A holiday in Slovakia does not have to be expensive at all, and yet you might experience the adventure of your life right here.

Kalvária Nitra

Kalvária Nitra

Nitra

Kalvária Nitra is located on a hill on the bank of the Nitra River in the southern part of the city. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. It is a frequent and popular spot for walks by locals as well as tourists who love coming here to enjoy the views. During major holidays, Christian pilgrimages are organized here.

Originally, a different calvary built in the last third of the 18th century stood on the site of the current one. It had seven stations and was replaced in 1885 (and subsequently consecrated in that same year) by the present calvary, which has fourteen stations. The original Kaplnka sv. Kríža chapel was converted into Kaplnka Božieho hrobu. While in the early years the calvary was outside the urban area, development gradually began to approach it in the 19th century until it surrounded it in the 20th century. At present, the calvary is very clearly visible from the city, and tourists often start out right from the center of Nitra to go and see it. Near the calvary is Lurdská jaskyňa, which also serves as a chapel.

Overall, the calvary consists of twelve Neo-Romanesque chapels depicting twelve stations of the Stations of the Cross. They are arranged along the path leading from Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie to Kaplnka Božieho hrobu. The latter is located at the top of the hill and represents the fourteenth station. In addition to the chapel of the final station, the Crucifixion statuary is also located at the top of the hill.

Since 1765, a small Renaissance monastery has stood at the top, originally built for the Spanish order of the Nazarenes. It gradually became a residence for retired priests and eventually an orphanage. Between 1878 and 1885, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style, and in 1925, an additional floor was added until it ultimately became the Mission House of the Mother of God.

Tourists also enjoy taking a trip to the Nitra calvary, mainly due to the great view it offers. The landmarks of Nitra, Šibeničný vrch, Zoborské vrchy, Tribeč, Pohronský Inovec, Vtáčnik, and Štiavnické vrchy are all right in the palm of their hand. That is what you call a perfect panoramic view. Children and seniors can easily handle the walk to the top of the calvary; it is a pleasant stroll along a grassy path.

Come and experience Nitra from a different perspective. Book accommodation near Kalvária Nitra and follow in the footsteps of the Stations of the Cross. Dražovský kostolík

Dražovský kostolík

Drážovce

If you decide to visit the ancient city of Nitra, you will certainly find plenty of beautiful things and cultural monuments to visit and make your stay more enjoyable. Worth noting and visiting is Dražovský kostolík, which is a unique cultural and sacral monument of this region. You can find it in the village of Dražovce, which was a borough of Nitra until 1975. You can get here by car or by public transport. The village is a well-known archaeological site from the era of Slavic settlement. A settlement and a burial ground from the period of Great Moravia were located here. Archaeologists discovered over 400 graves with significant artifacts in this location.

You will see the church from afar. This simple structure proudly towers on the edge of a limestone cliff, which is a spur of the Tribeč mountain range. It is a landmark that cannot be overlooked. The church is the oldest sacral building of the Romanesque type in the territory of Slovakia. Its origin is dated back to the 12th century. It is officially named after Saint Michael the Archangel. Upon your arrival, you will be charmed not only by the structure itself, but also by the location where it stands and its unique atmosphere. The church has a rectangular floor plan. On the east side, there is an apse alcove in the shape of a semicircle. The roof is a simple gabled roof covered with tiles. On the west side towers a small turret with a pyramidal roof. The building is constructed of stone and brick. The nave of the church measures only 6.3 x 4.3 m. The entrance is from the side. The windows are small and set relatively high. It is assumed that another building, a hermitage, was attached to the church in the past.

The church is mostly closed. You can get inside only exceptionally if you request it in advance. The only exception occurs annually on September 29, when Michael celebrates his name day. At that time, Holy Mass is regularly held here. From the hill sought after by tourists, there is a wonderful view of the city of Nitra and surrounding villages. From here you will also see Nitriansky hrad. Did you know that the oldest part of the church contained mortar dating back to the 9th century? It is also written that the church was meant to fall victim to the construction of a railway line, for which stone was quarried from the hill on which it stands. Only protests by local residents saved it from demolition.

The church has caught the eye of many artists with its appearance. In addition to paintings, it appeared on postage stamps and coins. Not only documentary, but also feature films were shot here. Such famous Slovak music bands as Tublatanka also used the environment to shoot their music videos. Do you remember the 50 SKK banknote? Yes, this famous church is depicted on it as well. We believe that our story about this place has intrigued you so much that you will decide to find and explore it during your next visit to Nitra.

The nearby city of Nitra is popular not only with students, but also with visitors from all over Slovakia. This magical paradise for tourists also hides lesser-known, yet all the more unique architectural gems. One of them is undoubtedly the Drevený artikulárny kostol (Wooden Articular Church) from the 17th century. The beautiful structure, built using spruce wood from the surrounding forests, attracts visitors with its exterior alone. The wooden church was built between 1688 and 1689 by order of Jób Zmeškal, the first vice-ispán in Dolný Kubín and captain of the castle guard at Oravský hrad. The church complex also includes a rectory located in its immediate vicinity. The dominant hipped roof of the building is covered with wooden shingles. The interior of the small church stands out with its rich decoration featuring diverse motifs, shapes, and colors. A true gem is the Baroque altar with wood carvings from the late 17th century and the richly decorated pulpit.

The small church is built on a steep slope. The incline of the terrain was leveled during its construction with a stone foundation. Thanks to this, the beautiful wooden structure acts as a dominant feature of the entire village and invites visitors and passers-by from afar. Many of them have no idea that they are standing on the spot where one of the greatest Slovak poets, Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, was baptized. Drevený gotický kostol Všetkých svätých

Drevený gotický kostol Všetkých svätých

Tvrdošín

The wooden Kostol Všetkých svätých church in Tvrdošín is the oldest surviving architectural monument in the town. This church is the only one in Slovakia to boast the EUROPA NOSTRA award from 1995 and, at the same time, an inscription on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List from 2008.

The history of the church dates back to the 15th century. Later, in the 17th century, specifically between 1650 and 1653–1654, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Rare is the Baroque altar, which originates from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries and replaced a smaller Gothic altar. Some of its fragments are housed in the Oravská galéria in Dolný Kubín, as well as in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. Behind the Baroque altar is a painted church curtain that symbolically divides the depiction of the sky.

Other gems in the interior of the church include a Late Renaissance pulpit featuring figures of the Evangelists (1654), a painted stallum (1654), a painting of St. George, and paintings of the Apostles. The incredible and at the same time mysterious atmosphere is sensitively enhanced by vaulted paintings depicting a starry sky and angels. Visitors will be captivated by the coffered ceiling consisting of 49 ornamental rosettes. The entire noble design of the church is underlined by heavy entrance doors with forged iron handles. These were originally painted with ornaments as well, just like the door to the sacristy. The church underwent extensive reconstruction and restoration work in 1993.

The church is located in a pleasant, quiet spot slightly above the town of Tvrdošín, near the cemetery. Even just sitting for a moment and immersing yourself in your own thoughts acts almost like a balm for the soul. It is advisable to arrange a tour in advance.

Evanjelický kostol v Spišskej Novej Vsi

Spišská Nová Ves

On Radničné námestie in Spišská Nová Ves stands a charming historical building of the Evanjelický kostol. The main altar, featuring a beautiful painting of Jesus Christ praying on the Mount of Olives, serves as the church's centerpiece. Additionally, the church boasts the oldest preserved library in the Spiš region, located on the choir loft.

The Evanjelický kostol in Spišská Nová Ves was built under the Patent of Toleration from 1781 and, according to the rules of the time, had to be constructed without a tower. Historians have discovered plans for the addition of a tower, but its construction never took place due to a lack of funds. The church will captivate you with its exquisite exterior architecture. It is built in the Neoclassical style, and the floor plan itself takes the shape of a Greek cross. Its builder was master mason František Bartelom, who also drew up the plan for the building. Construction began on March 29, 1790, and the consecration of the church took place six years later, on October 9, 1796.

In addition to the stunning altar and painting of Christ, you will also see an alabaster relief depicting Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. Another valuable treasure is the baptismal font, which originates from a wooden prayer house dating back to the times before the current church was built. The wooden pews are made of larch wood and were crafted by master carpenter Thomas Thern. The organ was built by the Viennese master Friedrich Deutschmann between 1882 and 1883. The church features excellent acoustics, thanks to which it is still used today to host concerts and festivals of organ and classical music.

Since 2013, you can also admire the restored original statues of the four Evangelists, St. John, St. Luke, St. Matthew, and St. Mark. The choir loft houses a rare library belonging to the former Evangelical Gymnasium. On October 15, 1963, the Evanjelický kostol in Spišská Nová Ves was listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments in Slovakia.

Bazilika sv. Jakuba v Levoči

Bazilika sv. Jakuba v Levoči

Levoča

Chrám svätého Jakuba in Levoča is among the most important sacral buildings in Slovakia. In 2015, Pope Francis elevated it to a basilica minor. Come and see the unique main altar of St. James, which, with its height of 18.6 meters, is the highest altar of its kind in the world. It is made of linden wood and was created under the hands of the woodcarver Master Paul of Levoča.

The parish church is dedicated to St. James, apostle and protector of warriors, pilgrims, and workers. His feast day is celebrated on July 25. The church has been serving believers for daily services for over 700 years. The church and its interior furnishings have been a national cultural monument since 1965. In 2009, the Basilica of St. James was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The church was built in the first half of the 14th century as a three-aisled building. Porches were built onto it on the northern and southern sides, and around 1515, the so-called Henckel Library was built above the northern porch. In 1859, at the instigation of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the neo-Gothic tower was completed.

In addition to the main altar, the church contains another 13 side altars. Another gem in the church is the organ, which was created in the years 1624 – 1630 at the expense of the wealthy Levoča burgher Friedrich Pobst by the Krakow organ builder Hans Hummel. The Renaissance pulpit, created by the local joiner master Krištof Kollmitz, originally from Olomouc in the Czech Republic, is also ranked among the remarkable monuments.

The dominant features of the church interior are extensive wall paintings representing the cycle of the seven works of mercy and the seven deadly sins. In addition to the main altar, the works of Ján Szilassy are also declared a national cultural monument. These are monstrances, chalices, and other liturgical objects decorated with enamel and embossed work, which are inlaid with Czech garnets.

A remarkable legend about a forged cross is also associated with the Basilica of St. James. When the former senator Wildner went on a trip with his wife and daughter, their carriage was struck by lightning and their only daughter Zuzana died. Out of grief, they lined her coffin with valuables and arranged a magnificent funeral for her. The gravedigger who buried her decided that he would dig up the grave that very night and take the jewelry from the grave. When he dug up the coffin, he stood face to face with a living girl. Out of gratitude to God for sparing their only daughter, the Wildner family had a forged cross placed on the roof above the main altar, where it remains to this day.

After visiting the basilica, you can set off for Mariánska hora, which is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Slovakia. Another holy church stands at this place, the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. On hot summer days, refreshment in the Bio bathing area will come in handy. Another great experience will be full-body relaxation in the unique Forest Sauna in Spišský Hrhov. The Spiš region will surprise you with a multitude of exceptional attractions that are worth not only seeing, but also experiencing. Book your stay in Levoča today. Ľutinská hora

Ľutinská hora

Ľutina

You do not have to belong to a group of strongly devout Christians to visit the Ľutinská hora pilgrimage site. Crowds of tourists regularly flow into this location to honor the site of the apparition of Saint Nicholas, who appeared right here in 1851 to a poor girl, Zuzana Fekete. Ľutinská hora is a sought-after location for tourists behind the village of Ľutina, and the most visited pilgrimage of Greek Catholic believers in Slovakia takes place here every year.

Just 800 m from Ľutinská hora, visitors will find the Bazilika Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky. The beautiful grounds of this sacred building will enchant you with their charm. You will find a total of 4 chapels in it. The Kaplnka Zjavenia Sv. Mikuláša was built in 1930 on the site of a drinking water spring. It was right here that Saint Nicholas spoke to Zuzana Fekete and asked her to have a cross built next to the spring. Priests regularly bless the water from the spring during liturgical rites. The water reportedly has healing effects on various skin and eye problems and has already helped many people. With the help of an underground pipe, it is led from the spring location to the second chapel, Kaplnka Sv. Kríža, where you can draw it into your own containers.

The history of the Kaplnka Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky is also interesting. After the approval of the apparition of Saint Nicholas to Zuzana Fekete by a letter from the Bishop of Prešov, Jozef Gaganec, in 1853, local believers traveled through Vienna, Buda, Transylvania, and Subcarpathia to spread the news of the apparition of Saint Nicholas and collect funds for the construction of the chapel. Pilgrims from Hungary, Transylvania, and Galicia began arriving at the site, bringing stones from which the chapel and the retaining wall were subsequently built. It was completed in 1854. In 1878, both the Kaplnka Sv. Anny and the Kaplnka Sv. Kríža were completed.

On the grounds of this pilgrimage site, there is also the Dom Mikuláša Klimčáka, which serves for spiritual gatherings. At the same time, it houses a permanent exhibition of artworks by Slovak and foreign painters. The well-maintained Záhrada Sv. Bohorodičky also has a spiritual charm, where you can pray the rosary or simply take a walk and enjoy the beautiful views. When you are at this place, definitely do not miss the Miniskanzen drevených chrámov. You will find very interesting, mostly Greek Catholic wooden churches built on a 1:10 scale.

After the spiritual experience from this place, we recommend taking a moment to quiet down. If you feel like exploring the surroundings and are interested in other attractions, you can choose truly interesting places. Tourists will appreciate the opportunity to put on their hiking boots and embark on an easy hike to Hanigovský hrad. Several hiking trails lead to it. From its top, you can see the village of Hanigovce and its surroundings. In the summer season, you can fully enjoy water fun thanks to AQUApark Lipany. Anglers will be pleased with the opportunity to fish at Rožkovianske rybníky.

Slightly tired, but enriched with new experiences, you do not have to return home immediately. Feel free to stay here for a longer period. It is a good idea to book accommodation near Ľutinská hora in advance. From the wide range of accommodation facilities in Ľutina, we can recommend all of them. They are highly rated by clients who have already stayed with accommodation providers thanks to bookings through our portal. Are you already pondering cozy apartments or rather cottages and chalets?

Kostol sv. Martina

Kostol sv. Martina

Čerín

Visit the peaceful village in the district of Banská Bystrica, the village of Čerín. Right here you will find one of the most valuable monuments in the surroundings of Banská Bystrica, namely Kostol sv. Martina. Upon visiting this Early Gothic church, you will be transported in time and place, experiencing for a moment the atmosphere of medieval England.

This artistic and historical gem is located on an elevated spot above the village of Čerín. Its history dates back to the 14th century when it was built by Pavol of Krtíš. In the church's exterior, you can view amazing medieval wall paintings or other works of art. Why visit this particular church? Definitely to see with your own eyes the impressive 17th-century wooden bell tower built next to the church. The church as such is fortified with a stone defensive wall featuring loop-holes. This was mainly because the Turks attempted to conquer the village.

Originally built in the Gothic style, the church was rebuilt three times during its journey to the present day. Its Gothic architecture has been preserved in many places to this day. Intrigued, you might find it interesting that the church was painted just a few years after its construction. For that era, this was a very unusual phenomenon, as decoration usually took place only half a century after construction. The 16th-century wooden painted ceiling will captivate you so much that you will remain in silent awe for a moment.

We do not need to remind you of its high artistic and historical value. Several years ago, 12 heritage-protected objects were listed within the church interior. It is well worth looking around at the main altar of St. Martin (crafted in the workshop of the Master of Kremnica), statues of saints, the Late Baroque empora, the 18th-century pulpit, or the wooden benches from the Renaissance period. You will also surely notice the Gothic baptismal font or the baptismal font from the Baroque period. The eye of an enthusiast will also appreciate the hanging painting of St. John of Nepomuk. There is truly a lot to admire in the church. However, it will be even better if you attend an announced mass and share a spiritual experience together with other believers.

Even though the church was struck by artillery during World War II, many paintings and frescoes were successfully saved. So be sure to plan a trip to this attraction and enjoy perhaps nearby accommodation near Kostol sv. Martina. From there, after morning mass, you can also head to the ruins of Hrad Dúbravica. Nearby is also Hronsek, home to a wooden articular church as well as other attractions of Hronsek. For a larger group, simply choose a suitable cottage in Čerín and treat yourself to a wonderful summer holiday exploring historical monuments in Slovakia.

Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského

Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského

Banská Bystrica

The metropolis of Central Slovakia, the city of Banská Bystrica, boasts an unusual wealth of sacral and secular historical monuments. Among the most precious and at the same time most beautiful is undoubtedly the Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského. It is situated right on the corner of Námestie SNP. The single-nave church with two tall towers has been the cathedral church of the Banská Bystrica bishop for more than 200 years. Located here is the episcopal cathedral, the throne from which the bishop explains Christian doctrine to the people. In addition to a spiritual message, visitors also come here for the beautiful architecture and rich decoration of this historic building.

The Jesuits began building the cathedral church in the 17th century based on Jesuit churches in Rome. The sacral building stands on the site of an original house of a wealthy burgher, which included a Gothic chapel. In the 16th century, it was the only place in the city where Catholic services were held. The church was completed after a long 20 years, and in 1776 it was converted into a cathedral church. A more significant intervention in its original architecture was an extensive reconstruction, for which the fourth bishop of the Banská Bystrica Diocese, Jozef Belanský, left funds in his will. At that time, towers were added to the church, between which a portico with four Tuscan columns was added.

The single-nave church is built in the Baroque style. It has two towers, six side chapels, and a choir gallery around the entire perimeter. Its main altar is adorned with the original painting of Saint Francis Xavier from 1729. The rich interior decoration is in the spirit of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council. In 2003, a new pipe organ was added to the church, thanks to which the church also becomes an occasional venue for concerts.

Perhaps during your holidays, you also like to discover the cultural and historical treasures of the cities and towns you visit. In that case, definitely plan a holiday in Banská Bystrica. In addition to the cathedral church, you can also admire the Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, which is the dominant feature of the Mestský hrad. Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie

Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie

Banská Bystrica

Monuments in the historic city center are the pride of Banská Bystrica and a major attraction for its visitors. A true jewel is the oldest building in the town, Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie. The sacral building is the dominant feature of the town castle complex and has stood in the heart of the town for seven centuries. In addition to the beautiful Gothic architecture of the structure with its tall onion-domed tower, you can also admire other valuable monuments in the church interior. Among the most interesting is the Late Baroque organ or the unique sculpture depicting Christ on the Mount of Olives. If you are a lover of cultural and historical monuments, a holiday in Banská Bystrica will certainly be an unforgettable experience for you.

Rich German burghers contributed to the creation of Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, which is why it is also commonly called the German Church. Its construction began in the 13th century on the foundations of an original Romanesque basilica. In the first half of the 14th century, the church underwent a major reconstruction, and only the lower part of the tower and the western facade were preserved from the original structure. Toward the east, the town built a new single-nave Gothic church.

In the 15th century, chapels were added to the church. On the western side of the sacristy, the Kaplnka sv. Barbory with a stellar vaulting grew at that time. The luxuriously furnished church was destroyed by massive fires that struck the town in 1500 and 1761. During the final reconstruction, the entire interior was modified in the Baroque style, and it was during this period that the tower received its eye-catching onion-shaped roof.

Currently, the entire vault of the church is covered with a painting by Franz Schmidt from the 18th century. The main altar has a massive architecture decorated with a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In the Kaplnka Kristovho tela, you can admire a 15th-century Gothic altar transferred from Kostol sv. Jakuba behind the village of Jakub.

The gem of Kaplnka sv. Barbory is a winged Gothic altar originating from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The valuable relief of Christ on the Mount of Olives is situated in the exterior, on the southwestern corner. The impressive Late Gothic organ was built in 1779 by Michal Podkonický, son of organ builder Martin Podkonický. The organ originally had 24 stops in three cases. Over the years it was reconstructed twice and currently has 55 stops in two cases, operating as an electro-pneumatic organ. It is richly decorated with works by Master Ján Uttner.

You simply cannot bypass the church, which ranks among the most valuable ecclesiastical monuments in Slovakia, when visiting Banská Bystrica. Reserve more time for its tour because the sacral building is part of the entire Mestský hrad castle area, whose main task in the past was the protection of extracted mineral wealth, primarily copper. Today, within its premises, you can also visit, among other things, the Stredoslovenská oblastná galéria with more than 9,000 exhibits.

And when, after touring the cultural and historical wealth of the town, you get a taste for a different kind of experience, let yourself be invited to a tour of the night sky during an excursion at the Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici observatory. Or are you rather in the mood to visit Aqualand - Plážové kúpalisko, where you will experience an endless amount of water fun? Holiday options in this town are truly diverse. Similarly, so is the accommodation offer near Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie. Accommodation in Banská Bystrica and its surroundings primarily represents comfortable apartments and popular cottages with the prerequisites to fulfill all the holiday expectations of their guests. Will you come to see for yourself during your next holiday?

Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek

Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek

Hronsek

Not far from the famous Kúpele Sliač spa, in the picturesque village of Hronsek, you will find a gem of sacral architecture, the Drevený artikulárny kostol, which, together with its wooden belfry, is one of the largest wooden structures in Central Europe. Did you know that the term artikulárny (articular) originates in history and means the church had to be built according to legal articles? These articles were adopted in 1681 at the Diet of Sopron and specified that the temple had to be built entirely of wood within a single year, no metal parts could be used in its construction, it could not have a tower, and the entrance to the temple could not face directly onto the street.

Construction of the Hronsek articular church began on October 23, 1725, and a year later, in the autumn of 1726, it was completed. The church carries elements of Scandinavian architecture, yet blends multiple styles from across Europe. It stands 8 meters high and has an impressive length of 26 meters. The ground plan of the church is in the shape of a cross. An interesting detail is the unique use of oak pegs instead of iron nails. Oak and spruce wood were used for the construction of the frame. The inner vaulting of the church resembles an inverted ship in its shape. The lower part of the choirs is decorated with ornaments in the shape of a linden leaf, representing a symbol of Slavic consciousness.

The church has 5 separate entrances built opposite one another. Above one of the entrances, a rooster is placed as a symbol of Christian vigilance. The interior is illuminated by 30 hexagonal blown-glass windows. The unique arrangement of pews, reminiscent of amphitheater seating, accommodates up to 1,100 people. Also remarkable are its excellent acoustics and the fact that the altar and preacher are visible from every seat in the church. The magnificent altar with six interchangeable paintings in a single frame was painted in 1771 by master Samuel Mialovič. The paintings are rotated according to the current liturgical season. Another dominant feature of the church is the organ, built in 1764 by the famous Banská Bystrica master Martin Podkonický.

A wooden belfry was built alongside the church in 1726. Four massive linden trees standing beside the church were planted to celebrate the completion of construction and represent a deep connection between nature and the human soul. The Slovak poet Andrej Sládkovič and Antónia Júlia Senkovičová, who hailed from Hronsek, also said their "I do's" here. Evangelical church services take place here every Sunday at 9:00 AM. Next to the church stands a vicarage where Ján Simonides and August Horislav Krčméry served. On July 7, 2008, the Drevený artikulárny kostol in Hronsek was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Do not forget to book your tour in advance by phone.

We believe that a visit to this unique wooden church will touch your heart and leave a deep impression on you. Stay longer in this beautiful region beneath the Kremnické vrchy. Comfortable accommodation near Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek can be found on our page accommodation in Hronsek. Plan a family trip and discover other fantastic attractions in the surrounding area. Indulge in a well-deserved rest and relax in the nearby Kúpele Sliač spa. Kalvária v Terchovej

Kalvária v Terchovej

Terchová

This specific Calvary, Kalvária v Terchovej, ranks among the non-traditional calvaries in Slovakia. It is located in a typical scattered settlement village in northern Slovakia, in the Žilinský kraj. The village of Terchová is one of the important tourist centers of Malá Fatra, but it is also sought after as a pilgrimage site. Take a day off work or plan a sun-drenched weekend spiritually at every single architecturally designed station of the Way of the Cross up to Oravcové hill.

The famous legend of Jánošík is tied to the village as such. However, it is also sought after for other popular attractions in Terchová. This interesting calvary is unique precisely for its stylized crosses. Instead of traditional chapels, you will find stone crosses with glass details laid on the ground, along with statues.

You can start your journey above Ďurkovský laz near the local agricultural cooperative. Following the yellow hiking trail, you can easily reach Oravcové hill. A walk to the top takes about 35 minutes, where a massive stone altar is located. You will also be captivated by unique views of the surrounding pristine nature.

The author of the Terchovská kalvária site is local academic sculptor and native Milan Opalka. This man was the first to contribute to the founding of Cyrilo-metodské dni, which have been held here for over a decade. Based on this need, a project was realized by the village, and in 2006, the calvary received a blessing from a spiritual father.

Should this easy hike combined with spiritual enrichment not be enough for you, we recommend one of the three sections of Jánošíkove diery. You will make full use of your hiking boots, and after such an active day, a rest in one of the accommodations will come in handy. It is best to choose accommodation near Kalvária v Terchovej. Nearby, there are mostly cottages and chalets preferred by families with children or larger groups. If you arrive as a couple and also have wellness at Relaxačné centrum Terchovec on your trip itinerary, stay in a room at a guesthouse Terchová.

The charming sacral building surrounded by greenery invites you for a pleasant walk in the fresh air. It is situated in the Kysuce region, in the village of Oščadnica, above the Laliky part.

Kaplnka na Haladeji stands on the site of an original chapel built in 1961. The bell, which was hanging here at that time only on a wooden structure, bore the inscription "Saint Cyril and Methodius pray for us". It is probably also for this reason that the current sacral building was dedicated precisely to St. Cyril and Methodius. It was built in 2015, when the original chapel was demolished due to structural issues. The current chapel is tiny, which, however, does not diminish its appeal. The beautiful stone and wood structure is decorated with wooden frescoes and paintings. The interior naturally features an altar.

A path leads up a gentle slope to the chapel, tailor-made for a pleasant walk. It is lined on both sides by beautiful wooden cottages whose architecture literally breathes history. Upon arriving at the chapel, visitors are greeted by wooden benches. Here you can sit down, rest, dedicate time to quiet prayer, or take a deep breath and let your soul find peace. An evening walk to this wonderful place is undoubtedly a unique experience. In the dark, the chapel is beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere for a pleasant evening.

Whether you come to Oščadnica for excellent skiing or mountain hiking, be sure to make time for a walk to the tiny chapel on the hill. Kláštor Katarínka

Kláštor Katarínka

Dechtice

On the border of the municipalities of Dechtice and Naháč, approximately 20 kilometers north of the regional town of Trnava, a historical treasure is hidden in the forests. Kláštor Katarínka or also the Kláštor sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej once belonged to the Franciscans, who inhabited this area in the 17th century. If you head here and expect a grandiose structure, you are mistaken. Only a ruin of the monastery and a reconstructed tower remain here, where during opening hours you will receive an engaging commentary from guides.

Not even many local residents know this monument. Deeply hidden, the extensive Baroque monastery complex was founded in 1618 on the spot where a Gothic chapel with a cemetery once stood long ago. According to legend, Saint Catherine appeared here to the young count and hermit Ján Apponyi. Malé Karpaty are thus worth visiting not only for hiking, but also for this pilgrimage site.

In the 17th century, you would meet several monks and novices from the Archdiocese of Esztergom here. After numerous attacks, whether they were estate uprisings or Ottoman incursions, the monks managed to repair the destroyed monastery every time. However, based on the decree of Joseph II in 1786, the monastery was abolished and began to fall into disrepair. Today, when you arrive at this place, you will feel a special magical atmosphere and you will find only the ruins that remained here.

An interesting feature of this place is that the tower located here was added to the monastery later. Its height reaches 30 meters, which means approx. 5 floors. The tower served as a bell tower. On its corners were four statues of saints from the Franciscan order. The current state is that you can visit here and enjoy the views from the newly built additional floor. You can see as far as the highest peak of the Carpathians, which is Záruby. In good weather, it is possible to see Trnava.

Getting to the monastery is not very difficult. Even though it does not lie on sought-after tourist trails or main roads, you will certainly reach it on foot. From Naháč it is about 40 minutes, from Dechtice and from Dobrá Voda approximately an hour and twenty minutes. Perhaps the best way is to arrive on the Lesná železnička Katarínka, which also has a stop directly by the monastery. Keep in mind that accommodation near Kláštor Katarínka needs to be booked in advance so that you can enjoy your stay perfectly.

Dechtice are also sought after for the Lesná železnička Katarínka. The ride on it is great. In the surrounding area, you can also check out the Kaštieľ v Chtelnici, which was once visited by Maria Theresa. In the summer season, as a family, you can head to Kúpalisko Dobrá Voda and thus spend pleasant moments of life. If you would rather prefer adrenaline in your blood, you might raise it during a Vyhliadkový let Boleráz. Of course, after this experience, it is good to calm down in a room at guest house Dechtice. In case you are interested in another type of accommodation, choose it from the offer on our portal.

Benediktínsky kláštor

Benediktínsky kláštor

Hronský Beňadik

The Benediktínsky kláštor monastery represents a magnificent complex of fortified sacral buildings. It is situated in the village of Hronský Beňadik, in the Žarnovica district. The monastery site extends in the valley of the Hron river, on the southern foothills of Pohronský Inovec. Due to its uniqueness, the monastery has been declared a national cultural monument and one of the seven wonders of the Banskobystrický region. Visitors are awed not only by its monumentality, but also by the combination of sacral and defensive structures and the blending of various architectural styles. The premises of the historical building offer the opportunity to visit a rare basilica, a chapel, a reconstructed part of the granary with a historical exhibition, and the monastery tea room.

The Benediktínske opátstvo abbey was solemnly consecrated as early as 1075. The construction of today's building complex was carried out in the mid-14th century. A Gothic church with a triple sanctuary and the monastic part were built. Decades later, a three-aisled nave, two towers, and a Late Gothic entrance portal were added. At that time, the monastery was complemented by the entire southern wing. The year 1483 was significant when the monastery received a rare relic of the blood of Christ from King Matej I. It is said to be a piece of the cloth with which Veronica wiped Jesus' face during the Way of the Cross. In 1508, the so-called abbatial wing was added to the complex, and a monastic garden was built in the middle of the monastery. In subsequent years, the Kaplnka sv. Krvi chapel was completed.

The early 16th century was closely intertwined with Ottoman invasions. Subsequent architectural modifications of the monastery therefore meant its gradual fortification. Ultimately, both the monastery and the church were rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress. Massive walls and cannon bastions suddenly became part of the complex. In the following years, the monastery building was part of a system of fortresses providing protection to central Slovakia. The Turkish raids significantly damaged the rare architecture. As part of the reconstruction, a large granary was built on the site of the collapsed wing.

Currently, the central part of the building system is formed by the so-called paradise courtyard. It is surrounded by monastic buildings and the temple church, which was elevated to the minor basilica of Bazilika minor sv. Benedikta by Pope František in 2019. It represents a magnificent three-aisled structure with a Gothic entrance portal. The facade with a pair of towers dominates the church. On its southern side, the original Late Gothic Kaplnka sv. Krvi chapel from 1489 is still located today. The furnishings of the church are relatively modest today. Three sculptures of the main altar, the relic of the blood of Christ, a Baroque baptismal font, and the crypt of the Koháry family have been preserved from the original equipment. A very rare monument is the organ from 1714.

Inside the monastic buildings, the huge interior of the granary is accessible to visitors. Just one floor of the four-story space has an amazing area of 800 m2. On the ground floor, an exhibition introducing the history of the St. Benedict abbey to the public is situated. A unique space for relaxation and refreshment is the rare monastery tea room. Its tasteful premises offer not only a pleasant sit-down over a cup of herbal tea, but also the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the ancient monastery. You can take a tour of the complex individually or with a guide for a symbolic fee.

You can make your journey into the history of this architectural gem of Pohronie more pleasant by a trip to the nearby Starohutský vodopád waterfall or by visiting the interesting interactive information center Energoland located in Kalná nad Hronom. We also recommend relaxation by the nearby Tajch water reservoir and, for horse lovers, a visit to the National Stud Farm in Topoľčianky. And when you find that one day in this region is simply not enough, look for accommodation in the vicinity of the Benediktínske kláštor monastery on our portal. Accommodation in Hronský Beňadik and surrounding areas will certainly not disappoint you with its offer. Alternatively, you can also choose nearby accommodation in Žarnovica. Even in this case, you will not be far from local attractions.

Bratislavská Kalvária

Bratislavská Kalvária

Bratislava

Bratislavská Kalvária was one of the first significant calvaries not only in Slovakia, but also in the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. You can find it in the district of Staré Mesto, on Kalvársky vrch in Bratislava. It was built in memory of the battle against the Turks near Vienna in 1683. According to most lexicons that refer to the Bible, a calvary is understood as a place or hill where Jesus Christ was crucified in Jerusalem. It is also associated with the depiction of the Way of the Cross with 14 stations.

The establishment of the Kalvária dates back to 1694. Its construction was initiated by the Jesuits, members of the Society of Jesus. It was completed in the 1920s and thus became a dominant landmark of Prešporek at the time. A sad fact is that with the onset of the communist regime in the 1950s, it underwent targeted destruction and devastation. Instead of stations with crosses, you will only find pictures with liturgical texts nailed to trees. The Kalvária has been operating in a provisional mode for many years, but it is gradually being restored. In 2020, the reconstruction of the only preserved chapel began, and the restoration plan also mentions the reconstruction of the stairs.

The first station was located at the site of today's SAV public transport stop, near the church of Cyril and Methodius. Did you know that the Kalvária became a refuge in 1713 for the people of Bratislava who survived a plague wave there? A part of the original path has been preserved to this day and is gradually being revitalized, also thanks to the OZ Bratislavská Kalvária. Kalvársky vrch continues to serve as a place of prayer and occasional Stations of the Cross. Not far from Bratislavská Kalvária stands the Kostol Panny Márie Snežnej and a Lourdes cave with a marble statue of the Virgin Mary.

After a romantic walk along the Kalvária, head to the center of Bratislava and experience plenty of fun discovering great attractions with which our capital is practically packed. Take a stroll through Staré Mesto and take a nice photo with the statue of Čumil and Schöne Náci. Walk through Michalská brána and take a look at Dóm sv. Martina, which belongs to the oldest Gothic sacred buildings in Slovakia. A visit to the Zoologická záhrada Bratislava and the botanical garden will also be a pleasant experience. Do not spend a lot of money on expensive accommodation; in our accommodation offer in Staré Mesto Bratislava, you will also find affordable options. Act quickly and book accommodation around Bratislavská Kalvária today. Our capital will surely win you over, and you will return home rested and full of unforgettable experiences.

Katedrála sv. Jána Krstiteľa

Katedrála sv. Jána Krstiteľa

Trnava

You will find Katedrála sv. Jána Krstiteľa on Univerzitné námestie, in the northwestern part of Trnava. This Early Baroque cathedral church is the largest and most magnificent twin-towered church in Trnava. Did you know that the Early Baroque altar located here is the tallest altar in Slovakia as well as in Central Europe? In 1978, this church received an honor from Pope John Paul II, who elevated it to a cathedral, and in 2003 he also visited it.

The cathedral ranks among the most valuable historical monuments in Trnava and is part of the building complex of the former Trnavská univerzita. At the same time, it is the first Early Baroque sacred building in Slovakia. The origins of the church are linked to the second arrival of the Jesuits in Trnava. The donor of the church, who also financed the construction, was the Palatine of the Kingdom of Hungary, Mikuláš Esterházy. In 1629, he entrusted its construction to the Italian master builders Antonio and Pietro Spazzo.

The consecration of the church took place on August 30, 1637, by Bishop Juraj Lippai. The first Holy Mass in the church was celebrated by the Archbishop of Esztergom, Imrich Lóši. This single-nave, twin-towered church is 61 m long and 28 m wide. The interior is decorated with colorful paintings that will awe many a visitor. Above its main entrance is a pediment with statues of seated angels and a stone coat of arms of the Esterházy family. Beneath this coat of arms, the stone coat of arms of the Trnavská arcidiecéza is also placed.

The jewel of the entire interior is the magnificent all-wooden altar, which was completed in 1640. The altar is as high as 20.3 m and is the work of several carvers, sculptors, and gilders. Its dominant feature is a painting of Jesus Christ, followed by scenes from the life of John the Baptist. Breathtaking as well is the rich decoration with gilded and polychromed ornaments, three altarpieces, and dozens of artistic sculptures. An interesting fact is that hidden beneath the church are crypts where members of the Society of Jesus and four members of the Esterházy family, who fell in battle against the Turks at Vozokany in 1652, rest.

You can visit the cathedral from May 17 until the end of October, every day except Sunday. If the visit to the cathedral captured your heart, visit Dóm sv. Mikuláša as well, which was declared a basilica minor by Pope Benedict XVI on November 9, 2008. Treat your body to fairy-tale rest and relaxation and enjoy an extraordinary day at Aquapark Trnava. Accommodation near Katedrála sv. Jána Krstiteľa can be found on our accommodation Trnava page. You can choose from a wide range of apartments and guesthouses. We wish you a wonderful holiday full of unforgettable experiences.

Bazilika Panny Márie v Šaštíne

Bazilika Panny Márie v Šaštíne

Šaštín - Stráže

Bazilika Panny Márie in Šaštín is one of the most important basilicas in Slovakia. It is located in the municipality of Šaštín – Stráže, which falls under the Senica district. Its construction began back in 1736, and the statue of the Virgin Mary itself was declared miraculous, which was also confirmed by a decree from the Vatican. This holy place is visited by several tens of thousands of pilgrims every year. It was also honored by a visit from Pope John Paul II himself and Mother Teresa.

This significant and magnificent place is also popular among tourists themselves. In addition to the basilica, the monument complex is formed by the former Pauline monastery, farm buildings, chapels, and the Pieta sculpture group. You can spend a pleasant family walk here. An interesting fact is that the entire construction of the basilica was initially financed by donations from common people and substantial contributions from Empress Maria Theresa. The entire church is decorated with beautiful and rare frescoes. The basilica went through many ups and downs during its existence. During World War I, for example, all the bells except the smallest one were stolen from its towers. In 1927, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was declared the patron saint of Slovakia, and this place thus won the hearts of additional admirers.

In addition to two traditional pilgrimages, which are the National Pilgrimage – the Feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows and the Whitsun Pilgrimage, various thematic pilgrimages are also beginning to emerge. These appeal to the general public and somehow try to reflect the times we live in. These include, for example, the Pilgrimage of Lovers, which is organized around Saint Valentine's Day. Furthermore, there is also the Pilgrimage of Expectant Mothers, which is always celebrated on Mother's Day. The Pilgrimage of Broken Hearts, the Bikers' Pilgrimage, and many others have also seen the light of day.

When you are already in the region of Biele Karpaty, it is definitely worth staying for a few days and exploring this lovely countryside. Cozy accommodation can also be found in the vicinity of Bazilika Panny Márie in Šaštín. Kalvária v Modrom Kameni

Kalvária v Modrom Kameni

Modrý Kameň

In the second smallest town in Slovakia, you can find remarkable monuments. The town of Modrý Kameň is located in the Banskobystrický kraj region, in the Veľký Krtíš district. In addition to its significant castle complex, which almost every Slovak knows, do not miss a tour of the Baroque mansion or the beautiful 18th-century Calvary.

If you are interested and want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the town, you can pause and breathe in the fresh air, or combine your walk with a prayer at the Calvary in Modrý Kameň. It is located on the edge of the town, in an area referred to as Modrokamenská lesostep. It is a nature reserve where you can observe various heat-loving steppe and forest communities of the Krupinská planina. You can get to the Calvary via Pánska cesta or Zámocká street. From here, a moderately rising bumpy forest path leads.

The Calvary reportedly originated in the early 18th century when Count Pavol Balaš had it built. Even back then, it consisted of 5 stations depicting purgatory, the Last Judgment, the resurrection of Christ, the guardian angel, and the blessed Virgin depicting the refuge of sinners. This Calvary gradually expanded and currently consists of 2 chapels and 10 stations of the Stations of the Cross. The central structure is an open rectangular chapel with a sculptural group of Christ on the cross and two other crosses with the thieves. When walking through this Calvary, your gaze will certainly fall upon a 6-meter-high cross created in 1863 to commemorate the visit of this place by Cardinal Ján Sczitovský. Art lovers will be enthused by many late-Baroque elements.

The Calvary is a popular place especially for mothers who want to escape the worries of everyday life. Tourists also put on their hiking boots and, from the elevation where it is located, fully enjoy views of the town and nature. Those who are indifferent to the values of faith can come here for a pilgrimage and honor the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows.

If you like exploring history, also head to the nearby attraction hrad Modrý Kameň. Very good, chemically untreated water will cool you down during the summer in the pools of the Krtko bio swimming pool. If you crave relaxation in a sauna or the opportunity to have fun on water slides, direct your steps to Aquathermal Strehová. You can also have fun during a game of Military Paintball. From this experience, you might take away some bruise on your body.

Husitský kostolík v Lúčke

Husitský kostolík v Lúčke

Lúčka (okres Rožňava)

The village of Lúčka in the Rožňava district lies in the valley of the Čremošná stream. It is known for hosting the annual Christmas wafer baking event. Or also for the fact that in such a small village, home to only 180 residents, there are as many as 3 churches. During a visit to the village, you can drop by Rímskokatolícky kostol sv. Jána or a simple single-nave reformed church. However, the most sought-after by tourists is Husitský kostol narodenia Panny Márie. Does it seem strange to you as well that the Hussites would name a church this way? Today's name has a bit of a historical background.

The Hussite church was built on a hill above the village at the beginning of the 13th century. Today a ruin, the medieval church was built in the Gothic style using laid stone. The building has a rectangular floor plan. It is single-nave, originally without a tower. The presbytery has a rectangular termination, the sacristy is built on the northern side, and a projecting vestibule is located on the western side. The church received its current name due to being occupied by the Bratríci (Brethren). These armies under the command of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs included a large number of Hussite warriors. During this period, the church was fortified with a stone protective wall, and a tower was added to it. Unfortunately, the church burned down during World War I. Instead, local residents built a new church directly in the village in 1926. Since then, the old church was gradually dismantled, and its parts were used as building material. World War II finished off the work of destruction.

Since 1978, archaeological research has taken place at the site. Since then, the masonry has been successfully restored and preserved. Unfortunately, the remaining fragments of the church's fresco decoration could not be saved. However, the watchtower next to the church was successfully restored and roofed. Today, the area of the Hussite church is used for organizing various cultural events. It is covered with a well-maintained lawn, and you can hide from the scorching sun under the crown of an old pear tree. The stone walls with remnants of sandstone portals complete a unique atmosphere, which, along with beautiful views of the surrounding nature, you too can enjoy to your heart's content if you visit this interesting place.

You can also walk to other interesting places in the surroundings. Popular technical monuments include Vodný mlyn v Kováčovej. You can enjoy a walk if you head to Hrhovský vodopád. The once famous Andrássy family used to live in this region. That is also why you can visit, for example, Mauzóleum Andrássyovcov or Andrássyho obrazáreň. You can regenerate your body with a massage or other procedure if you visit Kúpele Štós. Cyclists and hikers will be pleased with the marked trails leading through Národný park Slovenský kras.

In case you stay here for a longer time, we recommend booking accommodation near Husitský kostolík v Lúčke. The offer in this village includes various cabins and cottages, but you can also choose from cozy apartments Lúčka. Couples in love often choose private accommodation in Lúčka as their haven for the night. We will gladly help you select the highest quality accommodation.

Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša

Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša

Prešov

Did you know that Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša is the oldest Gothic sacral building in Prešov? During the times of Austria-Hungary, it was considered one of the most beautiful and perfect hall churches. Its construction was authorized by Queen Elizabeth in 1347. The elevation of the church to a co-cathedral church was decided in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. Come and inspect the magnificent interior of one of the oldest and most significant churches in Slovakia for yourself. You will certainly also be pleased by the view from the 71 m high church tower.

The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, bishop and miracle worker, whose feast day is celebrated by the Holy Church on December 6. Its foundations rest on an original older sacral structure from the 13th century on the site of an original German settlement. Kostol sv. Mikuláša was built as a single-nave structure with a raised polygonal presbytery. Its external dimensions reach a length of 54.7 m and a width of 34.45 m. It served as a Catholic parish church until 1531, when most burghers, along with priests, adopted the teachings of Martin Luther. From that time on, it became a Protestant church for citizens of German nationality for 140 years.

The change occurred after the town was occupied by the Habsburg army in 1671, when it once again became a church for Catholic believers for a time. Between 1682 and 1686, during the uprising of Imrich Tököly, it was returned to the Protestants once more. The church was returned to the Catholics in 1711 and has served as a Roman Catholic parish church ever since. Throughout its existence, the co-cathedral also experienced sad moments. It burned down six times and in 1918 was a silent witness to the Prešov Mutiny, during which 40 soldiers and 2 civilians were executed. Only a small part of the original Gothic-Renaissance furnishings has been preserved. Most was destroyed in fires or during religious unrest.

The dominant feature of the church is the main altar. It is a massive Baroque structure featuring a Gothic cabinet in the center with three niches and three sculptures. It is decorated with a Baroque canopy and side drapery. The author of this magnificent work is Prešov woodcarver Ján Weiss. The church also houses five other valuable altars in the Baroque and Renaissance-Baroque styles. Among the valuables are also Gothic sculptures of the Archangel Gabriel, the crucified Jesus Christ, and a small statue of Christ of Sorrows from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. In the church, you can also admire Gothic wall paintings on the northern side of the middle presbytery from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Another jewel is the large five-part Renaissance-Baroque organ from 1634, which is decorated with gold ornamentation. At its top, a small statue of Saint Michael the Archangel is placed.

From 2010 to 2021, the co-cathedral underwent an extensive interior and exterior reconstruction. In addition to a general overhaul of the large organ, the stained glass windows were restored, a new paint job was done, new electrical wiring, lighting, and sound systems were installed. The sanctuary was modified, and the wall frescoes were restored. The roofing was also replaced, and the entire facade was restored. Currently, regular services and concerts take place in the church. You can treat yourself to the view from the tower every day during the summer season.

After visiting this remarkable sacral building, treat yourself to a stroll through the main square, where a multitude of various restaurants, pastry shops, and pubs are located. If it is a hot summer day, do not hesitate and indulge in relaxation in the pools at Kúpaliska Plaza Beach Solivar or Kúpaliska Sídlisko III. A great alternative can be regeneration in the Salt Cave, where, in addition to exceptionally valuable salt extracted from the Klodawa salt mine, you can also look forward to pleasant music and a simulation of a starry sky. If you want to discover other interesting attractions in Prešov, we recommend searching for accommodation near Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša. Ubytovanie Prešov means stylish apartments and comfortably furnished guesthouses. The kam na výlet v Prešove page will certainly help you when putting together your holiday plan.

Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce

Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce

Šemetkovce

Will your steps lead you to Svidník in the near future? In that case, be sure to set aside time for a tour of Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce. This Greek Catholic sanctuary, dating back to 1752, is situated directly above the village of Šemetkovce and still serves its purpose to this day. From an architectural perspective, this church is considered one of the most valuable temples in Slovakia. The sacral gem is surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Šariš region, offering picturesque views and opportunities for trips.

The temple, built in the middle of the 18th century, was significantly damaged during military battles for Dukliansky priesmyk in 1944. The residents of the village were responsible for its restoration in 1945. The church has a three-part space and is dominated by three towers. The main tower is topped with a bulbous dome with a tambour and a metal cross. The other two turrets above the sanctuary and the nave have a conical shape, are covered with shingles, and are topped with wrought-iron crosses. The entire wooden structure is clad on the outside with vertical wooden boards and battens. Their restoration took place in 2001.

The interior is decorated with the remains of wall paintings. The Baroque wooden wall with icons dates from the second half of the 18th century. Some of the icons that form part of it have their origins in even earlier periods. The altar features antique columns and an icon of the Virgin Mary. Under the tallest tower, you will find a special narthex, historically called the babinec (women's porch). It served women who did not have the right to enter the interior of the sanctuary. A belfry with three bells also belongs to the church, built in the 19th century on the site of the original 18th-century belfry. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple.

In the surroundings of Šemetkovce, you can visit several rare sacral buildings. A wooden church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel can also be found in nearby Ladomirová. In the village of Krajné Čierno, you can visit Drevený chrám sv. Bazila Veľkého, and another interesting excursion destination is Drevený kostolík v Miroli. However, the list of wooden sanctuaries in this region is far from over. The village of Hunkovce can also boast its own wooden church, and you can visit Drevený kostol sv. Mikuláša in the village of Bodružal. And that is just a small sample of the architectural richness of the immediate vicinity.

If you would like to get to know the historical gems of Šariš more closely, be sure to book accommodation near Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce. We recommend choosing from the selection of accommodation in Svidník. The capacities of local cottages, chalets, and extremely popular modern apartments fill up very quickly. Drevený kostolík v Hunkovciach

Drevený kostolík v Hunkovciach

Hunkovce

If you come to the district of Svidník and choose the visiting and viewing of wooden churches as your destination, do not miss the picturesque village of Hunkovce. In the center of this village, on a hill right to the right of the main road, is located the Drevený kostolík wooden church.

The period of origin of this not very large church dates back to the 18th century, when it met the requirements of local believers. This specific wooden church is ranked among the rare sacral buildings of Eastern Christianity. Originally, people of the Greek Catholic faith gathered in it. During the tour of the church, you can notice the attributes of the era in which it was built. A simple style prevails here, because at that time the local residents did not have extra money. Yet, thanks to faith and hope in God, they managed to build such a beautiful and unique structure.

The attentive eye of a visitor to this church will not miss the division of the church into 3 parts. The first part is formed by an entrance hall, which was popularly referred to as the "babinec" (women's porch). This is located under the main tower. The entrance hall once served people preparing for baptism or repenting of their sins. From this part, you seamlessly reach the nave. This is the second part where ceremonies take place. From a symbolic point of view, it represents the pilgrim church, that is, Christians living on Earth. Among the most essential parts of the structure is the sanctuary, which, from a symbolic point of view, is intended to recall the Kingdom of Heaven. An interesting detail is its orientation to the north due to respecting the unevenness of the terrain. The sanctuary is usually separated from the nave by a high icon screen called an iconostas. In this church, however, the iconostas is missing. The church has been repaired several times. It was most damaged during World War II.

Three towers may also catch your eye. In one of them, bells were once hung. At the top of the tower, you can notice a double-barred Baroque decorative cross with a lunette. Beside the church, you can take a walk and enjoy the local scenery. You might also be intrigued by the graves that are placed right next to the church. During hot summer days, a walk through this place allows you to hide for a moment in the shade of the trees. Unfortunately, the former wooden fencing made of long trunks has not survived here. However, you can also be captivated by the wooden gate with a shingled roof. Raising your spirit during a religious service is unfortunately no longer possible here at present.

You can also explore the village to the fullest thanks to its other attraction. In addition to the wooden church, you can visit a burial site with more than 3,100 graves of soldiers from World War II. It is designated as the Vojenský cintorín Hunkovce military cemetery. After a continuous layer of snow falls, you can ski on the slopes of the Nižný Komárnik ski resort. A day full of sports activities can also be concluded with an insight into history. This is reminded to us even today by Dukliansky priesmyk, which played a huge role in the battle of 1944. Today, it is listed among national cultural monuments. You will not go swimming directly in the village. Therefore, it is good to take advantage of swimming options in the Svidník district. For example, we can recommend the tourist-popular Vodný svet Aquaruthenia Svidník.

Do not forget that it is good to find accommodation in Hunkovce in advance, from where you will explore this region conveniently. Ideally, it would be best for you to book accommodation near Drevený kostolík Hunkovce. You can choose from an offer of beautiful cottages in Hunkovce on our portal. Or would you rather choose more affordable private accommodation in Hunkovce? In case you need any assistance, do not hesitate to contact us.

Drevený kostolík v Miroli

Drevený kostolík v Miroli

Miroľa

When visiting northeastern Slovakia, you will certainly notice beautiful wooden Greek Catholic churches. For the most part, these are unique, centuries-old temples that belong to the cultural and historical heritage of our country. You will find one such church in the picturesque village of Miroľa. This mountain village is located in the northern part of Nízke Beskydy at an altitude of 380 meters above sea level in the district of Svidník. It has a population of just over 50 residents.

The wooden Greek Catholic church Ochrany Presvätej Bohorodičky (Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God) has stood in the village since 1770. It was built on the site of an older 17th-century temple. During World War II in 1944, it was severely damaged, but local residents had it restored again. It features a characteristic log structure and a typical external and internal three-part division, symbolizing the Holy Trinity. The building rests on a shallow stone foundation wall. The tower, which has a column structure, emerges from the entrance narthex, behind which lies the nave. Liturgical objects discovered during the restoration of the cerkev (wooden church) are placed in the narthex. The third part of the church is the sanctuary. The tower, nave, and sanctuary each have an independent roof covering made of wooden shingles. Below their peaks, they terminate in double onion domes topped with iron three-armed crosses.

The iconostasis separating the nave from the sanctuary ranks among national cultural monuments. It is particularly interesting for its magnificent color scheme. Its architecture is four-tiered, with icons arranged across four levels. They date from approximately the same period as the church itself, estimated to have been created in the late 18th century. At the top of the iconostasis is a panel icon depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Below the cross, the Holy Mother of God and Saint John the Evangelist are portrayed. In the 1970s, the entire iconostasis was professionally restored. In the nave of the temple, you can also notice an interesting painting of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, the creation of which dates back to the 17th century. The temple can also pride itself on rare books written in the Church Slavonic language, which are used during church services.

The surroundings of the church are enclosed by a wooden fence with horizontally oriented logs. These are protected along the entire perimeter by a small canopy of wooden shingles. Entry into the grounds is through a small, open wooden structure. Near the church, you can relax in the shade created by the massive canopy of an old linden tree.

Exploring the beauty of this mountain village is certainly worthwhile. You can take a walk or a bike ride into the nature of Nízke Beskydy. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the news that the state nature reserve Miroľská slatina is located in the village, featuring halophytic vegetation and the presence of broad-leaved cottongrass. A slightly different atmosphere will be offered by a visit to Vojenský cintorín Hunkovce, which contains more than 3,200 graves of soldiers from World War II. Once snow falls and skiing conditions are ideal, you can head to the slopes of the ski resort Nižný Komárnik. A bit further from the village, you can enjoy year-round fun and relaxation at Vodný svet Aquaruthernia Svidník. Together with children, you can admire domestic as well as exotic animals at ZOO Park Stropkov.

If you feel that you cannot manage to try all the above-mentioned attractions in a single day, you are right. We recommend booking accommodation near Drevený kostolík v Miroli. As a family, you might choose a cottage in Miroľa as your temporary home. Couples mostly prefer accommodation with a balanced price-to-quality ratio. These criteria are met by Apartments Miroľa. Should you desire a slightly more opulent stay with options such as private wellness, take a look at guesthouses Miroľa. We will gladly help you select the best accommodation for you.

Vyšný Komárnik

The history of the Svidník district is closely intertwined with the horrors of World War II. However, besides the Pamätník na Dukle memorial, the village of Vyšný Komárnik is also known for being home to the rare Greek Catholic Drevený kostol sv. Kozmu a Damiána church. The first church from 1700 was destroyed during World War I. The second, current church stands on the site of the original sanctuary and was consecrated in 1924. An interesting feature of this church is the tall windows in the nave and the sanctuary.

The church is dedicated to two saints, St. Cosmas and St. Damian, who served as selfless physicians in Syria. They are the patron saints of physicians and surgeons, and their feast day is celebrated in the Greek Catholic and Orthodox Church on November 1 and July 1. This remarkable sacral building is three-part, three-roomed, and three-towered, with three metal crosses. It stands on a stone foundation, with the entrance located on the west side.

The large entrance hall with a square tower is protected on the outside by vertical boards. In the tower, where one bell from 1909 was originally located, four bells are now placed, which even today regularly call believers to religious services. The dominant feature of the entire church is the four-row iconostas and an altar with a central image of the New Testament Holy Trinity. In the years 2005–2008, the church underwent an extensive interior and exterior reconstruction and is currently listed as a national cultural monument.

Chrám Sv. Ducha v Medzilaborciach

Medzilaborce

In the capital of Rusyns, in Medzilaborce, besides the world-famous Múzeum moderného umenia Andyho Warhola, you will also find Renaissance art in the form of the sacred building of the Chrám svätého Ducha. The Orthodox church was built in 1949 in memory of fallen soldiers in both World Wars. Inside, you will find captivating interior decoration and as many as 350 beautiful colorful icons.

The church stands on the site of an original wooden chapel that was destroyed during World War II. The beginnings of its construction were not easy due to the difficult post-war situation, lack of financial funds, and building material. However, the realization finally took place thanks to the support of the then Minister of Defense of the Czechoslovak Republic and later president Ludvík Svoboda. In gratitude for his help, believers call this house of God the Pamätník padlých hrdinov – Slovanov.

The management of the entire construction was undertaken by the spiritual father, Archimandrite Andrej Kolomacký, who had rich experience with the construction of churches in Bohemia, Moravia, and the Transcarpathian region. A helping hand was lent to him by Ing. arch. Luka Antič, and thanks to this, the project was approved on October 7, 1947. Even the residents of Medzilaborce themselves helped with the construction work. The interior painting was credited to nun Mária Klain. The church is built in the Old Russian Renaissance style and, with its unique architecture, belongs among the landmarks of this town.

During the extensive reconstruction that took place in the 1990s, the interior restoration was participated in, apart from the local master, by the world-famous Greek iconographer living in the USA, Dimitrios Leussis. He worked on the brightly colored secular paintings for four years. The Orthodox cerkvi (church) still serves for liturgical purposes to this day. In 1963, it was ranked among national cultural monuments.

The surroundings of Medzilaborce offer a wealth of opportunities for hiking and cycling tours. Take a trip with your family and treat yourself to beautiful views from the Vyhliadková vežička Kýčera. Also worth a look is the sandstone rock Čertov Kameň, which you can find in the Laborecká vrchovina in the Kamjana mountain massif.

On your wanderings, also drop by the Mini skanzen, where you can view an exhibition of folk architecture dedicated to the life and culture of Rusyns. If you like this idea of an active holiday, book accommodation near the Chrám svätého Ducha in Medzilaborce. Hostovice

Near the village of Hostovice, in the district of Snina, intense battles took place during World War I. A historical landmark and a quiet memory of this painful period is the military cemetery, where 112 soldiers, mostly from the Austro-Hungarian army, found their eternal rest. Follow in the footsteps of the not-so-distant past and pay tribute to the men who fought for your freedom as well.

The frontline cemetery was likely created in 1917 and consists of 47 graves. The graves are arranged in four rows. Twenty-five of them belong to individuals, four are mass graves, and eighteen are collective graves. Buried here are 104 Austro-Hungarian soldiers whose names are known. Among those buried are also 8 unknown soldiers, one of whom was of Russian nationality. A funeral ceremony was held here for the last time on April 13, 1923.

In 2011, the grave sites underwent an extensive reconstruction carried out by members of the Klub vojenskej histórie Beskydy. Crosses were erected and a central monument was built, a memorial on a stone pedestal with a wooden cross. Volunteers from Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary worked a total of over 1,100 hours here.

Another reminder of the horrors of war in this village is the wooden 6-meter-high Zvonica na vrchu Skory bell tower dedicated to the fallen Slovak soldiers who fought in the surroundings of Hostovice. Fierce battles claimed thousands of dead and hundreds of wounded. An educational trail 13 km long will lead you to the bell tower. The route starts near the municipal office, and 13 info panels will accompany you along the forest road.

Hostovice is an excellent starting point for trips into the surrounding area. If you like hiking, head to Hostovický kopec (Tlusté). From the nearby Starinská vyhliadka lookout, you will be treated to a magical view of our largest drinking water reservoir – Vodná nádrž Starina.

The first, main tier is formed by icons of St. Nicholas, the Mother of God Hodegetria, Christ the Teacher, and St. Basil the Great. The second tier of feast days is divided by an icon depicting the Last Supper. The third, apostolic tier features the icon of Christ the High Priest in its center. The final tier of prophets consists of six medallions with pairs of figures. The top of the iconostasis is formed by an inclined cross.

An interesting feature of this church is that it has been preserved in its original form up to the present day. In 2000, its exterior underwent extensive repairs, during which the entire roof was replaced, floors were cleaned, and the paint on the outer wooden cladding of the church was restored. The entrance doors, the altar table (prestol), two processional crosses, and a chest were repaired as well.

Since services are no longer held in the church, please announce your visit in advance by phone. You can combine the trip with hiking in the surrounding Vihorlatské vrchy mountains. Synagóga v Trenčíne

Synagóga v Trenčíne

Trenčín

Proof of the numerous presence of the Jewish community in the city of Trenčín is a true architectural gem. The beautiful synagogue in Trenčín is an unmissable part of Námestie Ľudovíta Štúra. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings of its kind in Slovakia. It has been part of the city's cultural and historical treasure trove since 1913. The building with Byzantine and Moorish-Oriental elements was built on the site of an old wooden synagogue from the end of the 18th century. Since its current condition does not allow a tour of the interior, we invite you to admire its architecture at least from the outside.

The Jewish sanctuary was built according to the project of a native of Trenčín, the Berlin architect Richard Scheibner. The original building plans are still kept in the State District Archive today. The central hall of the synagogue has a square floor plan and a dominant dome. On three sides, it is surrounded by stepped galleries with barrel vaults. The center connects to a three-nave vestibule, which includes the main entrance to the synagogue. The rectangular extension, which serves as a prayer room, was formerly the chancellor's room.

The main attributes of the sanctuary's architecture are restraint, integrity, and simplicity. Typical historicizing decoration retreats completely in some places. The central space is characterized by simple main arches and abundant natural light provided by large windows. The dome is decorated with oriental ornaments. The front and side western facades consist of twin towers with a gabled front. The entrance is situated on the main front facade. On the side facade, it is replaced by an arcade corridor. A characteristic feature of the building are three small domes covering the towers with staircases.

The ceremonial opening of the synagogue took place in September 1913. The Jewish population used it until World War II, when it was damaged by members of a Nazi organization and the Hlinka Guard. Its interior furnishings were also destroyed. The first repairs began immediately after the war. However, from 1951, the building served as a clothing warehouse. Only the prayer room was preserved. The synagogue enjoyed extensive renovation between 1974 and 1984. The building began serving as an exhibition hall and a venue for organizing concerts. Currently, only an exterior view of the building is possible, which we warmly recommend during your visit to Trenčín.

During a walk past the synagogue, you will certainly notice the very unusual Fontána vodníka Valentína. Take a photo and continue to the impressive Trenčiansky hrad. After touring it, you can take a trip to the unique lesopark Brezina, offering recreation, beautiful views, a children's playground, and many other attractions. Do not forget to set aside time to visit Tarzánia and kúpalisko Trenčín. You can't manage all that in one day? Book accommodation near the synagogue in Trenčíne. On our portal, you will find popular cottages and chalets guaranteeing privacy, as well as comfortable apartments. Do not hesitate and choose from the accommodation offer in Trenčín. The local attractions will be right at your fingertips.

Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Vranov nad Topľou

The Roman Catholic Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie is the most valuable and oldest historical monument in the town of Vranov nad Topľou. Since 2008, the church has carried the designation "minor," making it one of thirteen basilicas in Slovakia with this significant honorary title, which comes directly from the Pope. This modestly looking historical monument came to the awareness of Christians worldwide thanks to a miraculous event that occurred in the region. A rare historical icon of the Virgin Mary by an unknown author shed bloody tears before the eyes of local people. This happened in 1708.

The miraculous painting of the Virgin Mary executed on canvas with oil colors was subsequently transferred to the church. On September 8, 1708, the church was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and ever since, it has been drawing Marian pilgrims from all over Zemplín every year on September 8. Another miracle is the event from 1718 when a fire broke out in the church, but the painting remained undamaged. The church thus became an even more significant pilgrimage site, as evidenced by the Decree on the Establishment of the Pilgrimage Site dated June 29, 1999.

The church was originally built in 1441 by the Franciscans as a monastery church. After their departure from the town, the evangelicals took over the administration of the church from the Franciscans and managed it from 1540 to 1672. Subsequently, in 1672, the spiritual administration of the church was taken over by the monastic order of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, the so-called Paulines, with whom the basilica is associated to this day. The cult of the Mother of God is characteristic of the Paulines, as they managed many Marian shrines. In the territory of Slovakia, their administration also included, for example, the pilgrimage sites in Šaštín and Marianka near Bratislava. After almost a century of activity in Vranov, the Paulines had to leave the monastery by order of Joseph II, and their order moved from Slovakia to Poland. The monks returned back to Vranov only after more than 200 years.

From an architectural standpoint, the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie ranks among late Gothic monumental sacral structures. Although you wouldn't say so at a glance from the outside, the church interior is a magnificent Baroque work from the first half of the 18th century and appeals to every visitor. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary of Vranov depicting the Mother of God holding the child on her right forearm is located in the center of the altar superstructure. The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are also other, smaller altars in the basilica. The side ones are dedicated to St. Paul the Hermit, after whom the Pauline Order is named, and St. Pope Clement I. The fourth altar, located on the northern side of the church, is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, the martyr of the seal of confession. The great reverence of the Vranov Paulines for this saint is confirmed by the reliquary with his remains in the interior and the sculptural group in the exterior of the church, included in the state list of cultural monuments.

Also preserved in the Vranov basilica is a very valuable Baroque-Rococo collection of liturgical objects consisting of a monstrance, chalice, ciborium, and pectoral cross. This unique liturgical set is the work of the most famous personality of Baroque goldsmithing in Slovakia, Ján Silaši, and rightfully belongs on the list of national cultural monuments. A precious testimony to the existence of Baroque sculpture in Eastern Slovakia are the perfect woodcarving creations from the workshop of Jozef Hartman, which adorn the altars and the pulpit. The atmosphere of the distant past is complemented by wall paintings by the prominent Czech Baroque painter J. L. Kracker.

If the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie has caught your interest and you would like to find out more, a guided tour can be requested from the Rímskokatolícky farský úrad Sever, which is seated in the parish building of the former Pauline monastery. Although the monastery building is of a later date, originating from the 17th century, it is likewise a historical monument worth visiting. Right from a distance, you will be charmed by the entrance portal, which can boast the attribute of an architectural landmark of artistic significance.

Book your accommodation near the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie and come enjoy Vranov nad Topľou and its surroundings. After visiting the historical monuments in the town, whose name is derived from a crow (vrana), head out into nature and discover the Slanské vrchy. Set out on foot, by bike, or in winter comfortably on cross-country skis. You will be thrilled not only by the experiences the region offers, but also by the exceptional accommodation options in the Prešov Region.

As part of your trip, feel free to plan a visit to the Spišské múzeum – Výstavná sieň, where various concerts, conferences, or academic lectures are organized. Jakuba v Levoči, where you can listen to organ music echoing beautifully through the building, complementing its spaces along with the famous altar of Majster Pavol. If you enjoy water fun or want to do something good for your body, head to the pool at the krytá plaváreň Spišská Nová Ves.
