The route is interwoven with numerous ladders, bridges, footbridges, and chains, so do not forget to wear sturdy footwear. If you are at least a slightly fit hiker, the adventure can begin.

Starting points for you can be the villages of Smižany, Čingov, Spišské Tomášovce, Hrabušice, Letanovce, or Podlesok. In 1964, Prielom Hornádu was declared a National Nature Reserve, and rightly so. Prielom Hornádu is accessible all year round. In winter, however, the water freezes in some places. The ladders and footbridges are slippery, so you need to be careful during the ascent. In the summer months, boating on the Hornád river is popular. However, you can only navigate in small watercraft. Rafting is not permitted. Do not forget to register on the website of Národný park Slovenský raj.

If you are planning to visit Slovenský raj, it is not only the Hornád gorge that will be a great attraction for you. We also recommend visiting Kláštorská roklina, which is rich in breathtaking waterfalls, or Tomášovský výhľad, from whose heights you can see far and wide.

The 5 km long Monkova dolina is situated in the northern part of Belianske Tatry. At the head of this glacier-origin valley rise the peaks Hlúpy and Ždiarska vidla. An educational trail leads through Monkova dolina, which is very beautiful, but at the same time demanding. On the more than 8 km long route with 6 stops, you need to expect a steep climb and a large elevation gain (945 m). If you are interested in folk architecture, visit Ľudové múzeum - Ždiarsky dom; for children, Family Park Strachankovo or Svetelný dóm will be a great experience. For all of this, you will need pleasant accommodation, and there is certainly no shortage of it here. The most common type of accommodation in Ždiar are chalets and traditional wooden houses, which will provide you with complete privacy and very good amenities, making you feel right at home. Practically equipped and well-located are apartments, which can often be found, for example, near ski slopes. Guesthouses also offer very good services, often featuring their own restaurant or even a wellness area. Monkova dolina is already looking forward to you conquering it. The most interesting peak in this part of the Belianske Tatry is Muráň, which entered history through the breeding of ibexes, which Prince Hohenlohe once raised there.

During the walk, you will come across a real curiosity: a spring gushing out of the ground. It is a very abundant water source that spews out approximately 150 liters of water per second. The trail continues into the Bránka gorge, which was created by the erosive action of the Meďodolský potok stream and rainfall activity after the retreat of glaciers. The total length of the gorge is 185 m. At the spot where the dense forest ends, you can relax at the Studnička resting place, where wooden statues of a small bear cub and its mother bear are placed. These were created by the hands of a skilled folk woodcarver from the nearby village of Ždiar. After a short break, you will find yourself on a trail where the forest is sparser, and from a distance, a view of Kopské sedlo will open up before you. In the meadow, you can admire rare flora, such as Rosebay Willowherb, Willow Gentian, or Jacquin's Ragwort. Blueberries and lingonberries grow along the trail. Above the upper timberline, you have the opportunity to discover other alpine plants, such as Spring Gentian or Evergreen Saxifrage. The final stop of our hike is Kopské sedlo, which forms the border between the Belianske Tatry and the Vysoké Tatry mountains. Your reward will be a view of all of Zadné Meďodoly and the Vysoké Tatry. Here you can decide in which direction you will continue. However, do not forget that this educational trail is accessible to the public only during the summer season from June 15 to October 31.

Náučný chodník Štrbské Pleso

Náučný chodník Štrbské Pleso

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Do you love the Vysoké Tatry mountains and enjoy spending your free time walking in the fresh air? Then put on your walking shoes and set off with us on the Náučný chodník Štrbské pleso educational trail. Bring your little ones along and discover together the history, fauna, and flora of this moraine lake. Did you know that the region in which Štrbské pleso lies was once called Štrbský chotár?

This highest-situated Tatras settlement (1,346 m a.s.l.) is located in the Národný park Vysoké Tatry (High Tatras National Park) and is a local part of the village of Štrba. 5 km long educational trail with 40 wooden information panels is open to tourists throughout the whole year. Even your youngest in a stroller or mobility-impaired persons in a wheelchair can handle the excursion along the paved stony path. Prepare for a 2.5-hour walk during which you will learn something about historical sights, spa history, as well as sports events at Štrbské Pleso.

Our hike begins in front of the railway station, which is the final stop of the Tatras electric railway and cog railway. Going up the stairs past Hotel Toliar, we find ourselves at Hotel Kempinski. We turn left and follow the asphalt road to a viewpoint from which we can already see our most visited Tatras lake from a distance. Water does not flow out of it anywhere, nor does any flow into it. It fills through underground springs from a depth of more than 12 meters. Thanks to its location, the surface of the lake is frozen for an average of 155 days a year. Other points of interest certainly include the ski jumping hill that has stood here since 1966. However, this massive structure has not been used for active sports for many years. In 1925, the European Ice Hockey Championships were held on the frozen surface of the lake.

The dark blue crystal-clear water in the lake is home to many small aquatic animals and fish. The most numerous fish species found here include chub, northern pike, European perch, and roach. A notable feature is the presence of the vendace fish (Coregonus maraena / sih maréna). This is most likely the last place in the world where this fish still occurs. Fishermen from the Třeboňsko region (Czech Republic) brought the vendace here in 1929. Their current number can be counted on the fingers of two hands. Despite the efforts of locals for artificial breeding, this fish is doomed to extinction.

Our trip continues to another viewpoint, offering an unprecedented view of the Podtatranská kotlina basin and the Nízke Tatry mountains. We proceed along a slightly steep slope from which we can see Cesta slobody. Náučný chodník Jakuba Surovca

Náučný chodník Jakuba Surovca

Tisovec

If you enjoy putting on your hiking boots, set out to discover the beauties of nature in Muránska planina. In the village of Tisovec, which is a well-known birthplace of Slovak painters, politicians, and artists, you will have the opportunity to spend a day in this national park. This is also possible thanks to the Náučný chodník zbojníka Jakuba Surovca educational trail in Čertova tiesňava.

The educational trail begins in the village of Tisovec. From the local sheep farm (salaš), where you can treat yourself to a tasty bite to eat, set off directly towards adventure. Crossing this trail is at your own risk. The trail is one-way, has a length of 4.7 km, and an elevation gain of 268 m. The hike will take approximately 3 hours of your time. The difficulty of the loop trail is medium, so it is good to have very good footwear. During the winter months, in spring, and also during heavy rains, the terrain is dangerous and visiting is not recommended. However, as a group of 4 or more people, you can arrange a guide who will enrich your walk along the route with an engaging commentary.

Just as the highwayman Juraj Jánošík is well known in Slovakia, the highwayman Jakub Surovec is known in the Malohont region. He was the leader of a group of highwaymen who robbed wealthy people not only in Slovakia but also in parts of Poland. That is also why the trail leading through the untouched nature of Čertova dolina, through which he escaped from the gendarmes long ago, is named after him. The most beautiful spots on this trail are attractive gorges, which you can conquer here using wooden ladders.

After starting your journey from the sheep farm, heading upstream along the creek, you will enjoy bird song in the canyon-like valley, the soothing sounds of falling water from the waterfall, and the rustle of the forest, dominated by fir, spruce, beech, and valuable broadleaf trees on limestone bedrock with karst relief. At the beginning, you will be surprised by a legend about a local monk, which you can read on the 1st of the 7 panels. The route continues to the cave in Remeta. Do not miss Rizňa either, a wooden chute used for sending timber down. You can also stop by a miraculous spring, but we do not recommend drinking water from it. There are 2 information panels placed in Makové koryto. One concerns hunting and the other forestry. Following Masarykova cesta, continue to Čertov viadukt, where an information panel with information about the rack railway line Pohronská Polhora – Tisovec awaits you. You can refresh yourself and enjoy a moment of rest at Vyvieračka, a modified spring. Continuing into Čertova dolina, where Zbojnícky vodopád, the narrow pass Surovcov stisk, Malý vodopád, dams, the narrow pass Posledná barikáda, and a cave are located, you will enjoy beautiful views of the surroundings. At Pacherka, a panel will introduce you to information about sheep farming and highwaymen. At Galička, a true Carpathian sheep farm with a shepherd (bača), farmhands (vlasi), and sheep is located.

This longer hike will give you a workout, but it is well worth completing. Perhaps you will still have enough strength to step into a carriage of the steam rack railway Parná zubačka Tisovec. In the winter season, it is great to enjoy the slopes of the ski resort Tisovec - Rejkovo and Tisovec - Bánovo. From another perspective, the lookout tower Rozhľadňa Zbojská offers views of the world. Are you warm and feel like cooling off not only from the inside? Then visit the pools of the swimming pool Klenovec. Rest assured that you will not be bored in this region.

For a longer stay, we recommend booking accommodation near Náučný chodník zbojníka Jakuba Surovca. The cheapest solution during the summer is to set up a tent. This option does not suit everyone, so it is good to choose from the range of cottages and chalets in Tisovec or treat yourself to comfort in a room at Hotel Tisovec. We will gladly help you with your choice.
