The observatory is situated at an altitude of 2,632 m above sea level, on the summit of the second-highest peak of Vysoké Tatry. A cable car leads here from Skalnaté pleso. The starting point is Tatranská Lomnica, one of the largest settlements in Vysoké Tatry. Truly fit hikers are also offered an incredible hiking experience here: a climb up Lomničák accompanied by mountain guides.

Observatórium Lomnický štít was established between 1957 and 1962 as a result of a global initiative during the International Geophysical Year. Since that period, it has served for meteorological measurements and observations by Slovenský hydrometeorologický ústav. In 1964, Astronomický ústav SAV also began conducting its research here. The main object of observation for astronomers on Lomnický štít is our largest star, the Sun. The observatory is among the world's rarities, as systematic research into the solar emission lines takes place here. Excursions to this unique workplace of the astronomical institute are possible only during open house days, which are usually held twice a year. During this time, anyone can peek into the premises of our highest-located observatory and, in case of good visibility, observe the starry sky up close.

Lomnický štít is a major attraction for tourists. In addition to a wonderful panoramic view of Malá Studená dolina, the five Spišské plesá tarns, Ľadový štít, Gerlach, Vysoká, Rysy, and Kriváň, you can also enjoy a delicious coffee here in the stylish café Dedo. Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici

Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici

Banská Bystrica

Head out to Urpín hill, where a watchtower, known as a vartovka, was built several centuries ago. The hill, named Vartovka after it, is also home to the observatory, which is a favorite among the residents of Banská Bystrica. If you want to broaden your horizons and learn a bit more about astronomy and its related technical sciences, direct your steps straight to the Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici.

In 1961, the Ľudová hvezdáreň was solemnly opened on Vartovka, and 10 years later it became the Krajská hvezdáreň. As its scope gradually expanded, the observatory's premises grew as well. Today, it consists of an upper dome with an observatory housing the main high-end Celestron 1400 XLT telescope on a CGE mount. In the lower dome, you will find a modern telescope. Here you can observe the Sun in all its glory even during an eclipse, the Moon, or occultations of celestial bodies.

Did you know that already in the days of Matej Bel, people had an indescribable interest in exploring everything happening in the sky? The first observations backed by detailed records were thus carried out around 1855 during the time of Karol Zenger. It wasn't until after World War II that a club dedicated to astronomy and meteor observation was established at the local grammar school. Astronomy as such was therefore doing quite well. This fact motivated students and professors of the Vyššej pedagogickej školy to establish the Ľudová hvezdáreň. Plans varied, but in the end, they settled on the idea of converting the old built watchtower into the observatory that still stands there today.

If you come as an individual or a small group, you can choose from a variety of programs, sky observations, or film screenings. Outside, there is a fire pit and a relaxation terrace. A school trip will thus meet the expectations of every student. You can reach the observatory via a marked hiking trail, which begins on Žltý piesok street. Or will you choose the Náučný chodník Serpentíny Urpín and learn even more interesting information? Rest assured that if you plan to stay here longer, it is worth booking accommodation near the Hvezdáreň Banská Bystrica.

Come to Banská Bystrica to explore other attractions of the city and enjoy everything it has to offer. You will appreciate the many historical monuments in the square or simply relax in the outlying parts of the city if you come with your significant other. At that time, we recommend thinking about pleasant accommodation in Banská Bystrica. You can choose either one of the quality guesthouses or a somewhat more luxurious hotel room. You might even manage to catch a glimpse directly of the Hvezdáreň na Vartovke observatory or the peak of the Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského cathedral from your room window.

Hvezdáreň a planetárium M.R. Štefánika Hlohovec

Hlohovec

Who wouldn't like the view of a night sky full of stars? You have certainly watched these glowing dots before and pointed your finger at Polaris or the Big Dipper constellation. Observing the night sky is one of the oldest activities in human history. In the past, people navigated by the stars and even used the starry sky as a calendar. If you are interested in astronomy, come to Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika v Hlohovci and look into the infinite universe through the second largest telescope in Slovakia.

The history of astrology itself is as old as humanity. Observing the stars and mapping them led people to tell various stories, which were often connected with supernatural beings. Only later did they begin to write down and compare the results of their observations, which led to the construction of observatories. Institutions where scientists observe, study, and analyze natural phenomena.

The desire for knowledge also stands behind the creation of this observatory. Several enthusiasts from the pharmaceutical plant at the time decided to establish an Astronomy Club under the Works Club ROH at Slovakofarma. The initial impulse was a sale of old, high-quality military optics for cheap. However, they arrived too late for that, and the equipment was already sold out. Nevertheless, this changed nothing in their decision, and on February 10, 1954, the history of astronomy in Hlohovec began to be written.

The mission of the club was to organize popular-science lectures and pass on knowledge about the universe to the youth. It was also tasked with carrying out professional astronomical observations and establishing a public observatory. The grand opening of Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika took place on November 29, 1958. Alongside the observatories in Prešov, Levice, and Humenné, it thus became the fourth scientific research institute for astronomical observations in Slovakia established after World War II.

The observatory provides several programs for schools, kindergartens, and the general public, including observations, lectures, seminars, and screenings of various professional and educational documentary films. The hall with a capacity of 56 seats houses a high-quality Zeiss ZKP-2 planetarium, which allows projecting an artificial sky, the Sun and the solar system, the Moon, planets, and stars, as well as the Milky Way.

In addition, the observatory engages in observations and regularly publishes its findings in professional literature. Observational activities for both the public and scientific purposes are provided by the observation and research department. Do not forget to arrange your visit to this interesting place in advance by phone.

After an engaging excursion, visit Hlohovský zámok and walk through the magnificent French terraced gardens in the chateau park. From the castle, head to Kúpalisko Hlohovec, which will guarantee you true summer refreshment. The surroundings of Hlohovec offer many great attractions that are worth seeing and visiting. If you like the idea of an actively spent vacation, do not wait and book accommodation near Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika right now. You will certainly choose from our wide range of accommodation in Hlohovec.

Rožňava

Since time immemorial, people have been fascinated by stars and unexpected phenomena in the night sky. They watched supernova explosions, fixed their gaze on glowing stars, or sought to learn everything about distant, unexplored planets. Are you one of those people as well? Catch a glimpse into the secrets of the universe thanks to observations at Hvezdáreň v Rožňave. Weather permitting, these take place every Thursday.

From approximately the 15th century, people attempted to journey after the mysteries of the universe. In the town of Rožňava, however, people managed to peek into space only several centuries later. The first observatory was built on the southern slope of the calvary on Lesná ulica street in 1966, when the plot of land of the current observatory was handed over to an astronomy club to build an observation station. Since 1969, the local observatory became an independent institution named Ľudová hvezdáreň Uránia. Gradually, technical achievements were purchased for the observatory's equipment, such as a Newton-type telescope with dimensions of 280/2250, a radiotelescope, a weather station, or a refractor.

Hvezdáreň v Rožňave consists of a dome, a meteorological station, a rain gauge, an observation station with a sliding roof, a sliding observation station, a sundial, a solar furnace, and an all-sky camera. Its equipment also includes various types of telescopes, thanks to which all celestial bodies in the sky can be observed. Since 2009, the observatory has been entrusted to the property management of the Gemerské osvetové stredisko (GOS). Its activities were integrated into the organizational structure of GOS, and an astronomy section was created, which primarily fulfills tasks in the fields of popular education, professional research, observation, and advisory activities.

During Thursday evenings, the Rožňava observatory organizes popular evening sky observations for its visitors. These take place after dark only in case of favorable weather. As part of an evening excursion during a group visit, you can arrange a lecture on a pre-selected topic. On sunny days, thanks to a portable chromospheric telescope or telescopes with a solar filter or projection in the observatory dome, you can see all the way to the Sun, thousands of kilometers away. The observatory is a sought-after location for students, teachers, and the general public. Within its portfolio, it is possible to book a professional lecture on a pre-stated topic and thus learn more about this infinite cosmic space. Observatory staff also carry out outreach observations in schools and preschool facilities. The observatory's activities also include organizing the progressive knowledge competition "Čo vieš o hviezdach" (What Do You Know About Stars?) and art competitions "Vesmír očami detí" (The Universe Through Children's Eyes) and "Astrofilm". Extracurricular activities include uniting astronomy enthusiasts in the Astroklub affiliated with the observatory.

The observatory strives to appeal to every visitor. However, if you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, visit other attractions in Rožňava. The Gemer region is famous for its mining activity. You will learn about the history of mining during a visit to the historical exhibition of the Banícke múzeum. A somewhat more interesting experience will be offered to you by Banícke múzeum Rožňava. On its premises, you can ride a mining train or view two rare technical uniques, a Škoda Sentinel steam truck and an Aveling & Porter steam roller. On summer days, when the temperature exceeds 25 °C, it is worth heading to the pools at Kúpalisko Rožňava to cool off your sun-heated bodies. After all, swimming is great for every age category. Ending the day can be with a glass of wine at your pre-booked accommodation or in a tent near Brzotínsky rybník.
