Zoologická záhrada Bojnice

Bojnice

Zoologická záhrada Bojnice as the first zoological garden in Slovakia has been welcoming its guests since 1955. It is among the most popular attractions in Bojnice, along with Bojnický zámok. The advantage is easy accessibility. A short walk takes you from the center of Bojnice to the zoo in a few minutes, while from Prievidza it is a longer 40-minute walk. If you are going by car, you can use designated parking spaces or simply park in Bojnice in a municipal or private parking lot for a small fee. The zoological garden is open every day of the year.

Over an area of 41 hectares, you will find more than 430 species of animals, totaling more than 3,500 specimens. Among the most significant are antelopes, gibbons, kangaroos, leopards, lions, elephants, and zebras. You will also see the cute panda or popular flamingos. And those who are not afraid of snakes are invited to the terrariums, where you will find various species of reptiles, brightly colored poison dart frogs, and spooky-looking toads. Your little ones will have the greatest joy visiting ZOO Bojnice. In addition to families with children, you will also frequently meet couples in love or seniors among the visitors. One thing is certain, you certainly won't be bored here.

However, ZOO Bojnice does not only offer the opportunity to get to know various animal species. The goal is to build a positive relationship with animals in children, educate them about life, and last but not least, help them. Animals that have been injured in the wild and need care often find their way to the zoo. If returning to nature is not possible after treatment, the animals are cared for until the end of their lives. If you are also an animal lover, you can help, for example, by adopting a selected animal through a one-time contribution.

Can you guess how many visitors have already passed through the zoo gates? Imagine that as early as 2008, they welcomed their 20-millionth visitor here. In addition to standard tours, Národná ZOO Bojnice also offers other experiential programs. For one day, you can become a zookeeper, gardener, or chef for the animals. They also have a zoo school for educating children and adults. Today, special programs for schools and other groups are available.

In Bojnice, it is also worth visiting other attractions. Families with children will have fun at Múzeum praveku and Dino park Bojnice. You must not miss Bojnický zámok and the experiential attraction Sokoliari Aquila. After an active day, we invite you to Kúpele Bojnice or Termálne kúpalisko Vodný svet - Bojnice, where you can recharge your energy.

To manage everything nice and important, we recommend spending at least a few days in Bojnice. Get inspired on our portal and find the right accommodation near ZOO Bojnice for yourself. Truly everyone can choose with us.

Zoologická záhrada Košice

Zoologická záhrada Košice

Košice

Zoologická záhrada Košice is the largest zoo not only in Slovakia, but in all of Central Europe. It extends over an impressive 289 hectares of the natural environment of Čierna Hora in Košice, in the Kavečany district, with approximately 75 hectares accessible to the public.

At present, more than 240 different animal species live in the zoo, representing the fauna of all continents. It opened its doors to visitors in 1986, following seven years of construction. At that time, visitors could view 23 animal species, mostly consisting of native Carpathian fauna. Over time, both the area open to the public and the number of individual animal species expanded to reach its current size and variety.

Some animal species cannot be found in any other zoo in Slovakia. These include, for example, Humboldt penguins, toco toucans, Andean condors, harbor seals, or Altai wapiti. However, the zoo also houses many very rare captive species. From this large selection, we can mention the North Chinese leopard, scimitar-horned oryx, Bhutan takin, or Tatra chamois. Among the other highlights of the Košice zoo are the largest aviary in Slovakia, as well as the largest brown bear enclosure among all zoos in Central Europe.

As the only zoo in Slovakia, it boasts an established botanical trail, which was gradually expanded to include other sections such as the Bird Trail, Beekeeping Trail, Floodplain Forest, and Geological Trail, which compares the Carpathian and Altai (Central Asia) mountain ranges. One section of the trail is also the Siberian ibex enclosure, which cannot be found anywhere else in Slovakia. You will also find interactive elements with geological and paleontological themes here.

Zoologická záhrada Košice can likewise pride itself on many breeding successes in terms of the number of reared offspring. It even holds an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records from 2002, when breeders achieved a unique milestone—bear quintuplets were born here. Since 2017, the zoo has been a full member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), which unites elite global zoos. In addition, it is an active member of other prominent organizations, including EAZA, UCSZOO, EARATA, IZE, and Species360.

Part of ZOO Košice is also the popular DinoPark, which has been open to visitors since 2013. Across an area of nearly 5 hectares, dozens of life-sized Mesozoic giants of our planet will amaze you. You can also visit a unique 3D cinema, have fun on the paleontological playground, or try the adrenaline swing.

You can reach the zoo from Košice by public transit (the terminal stop is ZOO). However, if you want to treat yourself and your children to a complete experience, we recommend booking accommodation in the area surrounding ZOO Košice and visiting other nearby attractions offered by the historic city of Košice. Arborétum Mlyňany SAV

Vieska nad Žitavou

A European unique, Arborétum Mlyňany SAV, is situated between the villages of Vieska nad Žitavou and Tesárske Mlyňany in the district of Zlaté Moravce. The protected area of the botanical garden stands out with its rich collection of trees and shrubs. Its collections, which contain more than 2,300 species of woody plants from the Mediterranean, America, Africa, and Asia, place it in the position of the most significant dendrological facility in Slovakia. The unique green area, dominated by a picturesque manor house, is open to the public year-round.

The arboretum was founded in 1892 by the Hungarian nobleman Štefan Ambrózy-Migazzi. His main goal was to concentrate as many exotic trees and shrubs as possible in the botanical garden and to demonstrate their viability in our climatic conditions. In an oak-hornbeam grove, he gradually planted woody species imported from Germany, France, or England. The beginnings of the planting were linked to the construction of a Neoclassical manor house with a tower, which was completed in 1894. By 1925, it was possible to plant more than 300 species of evergreen plants in the arboretum. After World War II, the area came under state administration and was later taken over by the Slovak Academy of Sciences, which manages it to this day.

The arboretum currently covers an area of 67 ha, and its plant collection is divided according to a geographical principle into 5 parts with constructed educational trails. The central part consists of the oldest Ambrózyho park with a beautiful manor house and a predominance of monumental oak trees and original hornbeam stands. In the arboretum, you can also walk among the trees and shrubs of Asia, North America, Korea, and of course, there is also an area dedicated to Slovak dendroflora. The presentation of woody species in each part of the arboretum is combined with the typical architecture of the respective regions, complemented by small ponds and lakes.

In addition to being an important scientific workplace dedicated to research, the arboretum opens its park with a unique collection of trees and shrubs to the general public. You can freely stroll through the arboretum, with diverse species of trees, shrubs, and flowers from various corners of the world providing a backdrop. The park's information system will introduce you to the dendroflora of individual areas and draw your attention to points of interest. Among the most beautiful sectors is undoubtedly the East Asian section. The most visited period is related to the blooming of rhododendrons, which takes place at the end of April and the beginning of May. The green park also includes an ornamental plant nursery, from which you will certainly take home a rare piece for your garden.

Allow us to invite you for a walk through the charming world of global flora. You can combine a trip to this unique arboretum of European significance with recreation at the Slepčany water reservoir or with an excursion to Energoland Mochovce, where they will guide you through the entire evolution of energy from the Big Bang to the near future. If the highlights of this region have caught your interest, book accommodation near Arborétum Mlyňany SAV today and get ready for a stay full of unique experiences. Botanický park - Lednické Rovne

Lednické Rovne

Need a break from daily responsibilities? We have a great tip for you! Come clear your head in the Botanický park botanical park, which you can find in the area of the Renaissance manor house in Lednické Rovne. A magical green oasis of peace awaits you here. Covering an area of 20 hectares, you can view various rare plants and trees, which began to be planted as early as the beginning of the 18th century. A visit to the park will recharge your batteries and harmonize both body and soul.

Botanický park Lednické Rovne was built after the English model with various artificially created ruins of bastions, broken pillars, obelisks, and turrets, elegantly complemented by a small temple of the goddess Minerva. Its creation dates back to the second half of the 17th century, when Count František Rákoci II had one hundred linden trees planted here. Further planting and modernization of the park was continued by the Dutch Count Aspremont in 1824. A significant contribution to the building of the park was made by the famous Hungarian botanist and director of the university botanical garden in Budapest, Anton Rochel.

During a walk through the park, you can admire the amazing scenery of a chestnut avenue and rich pine stands, as well as a quantity of plane trees, and beautifully colored Japanese maples are not missing either. Among the most beautiful greenery in the park are magnolias, rhododendrons, roses, as well as diverse rock plants, groundsel, and climbing ivy. In addition to a small pond with a statue of the ancient god Neptune, the park is dominated by an observation tower and a Renaissance mausoleum with a domed roof and a turret.

Count Aspremont had an ancient church built in the park, surrounded by a cemetery with tasteful gravestones. The count himself is buried here, as well as his wife, for whom he had a sarcophagus made of red-veined marble constructed. A stone Gothic gate with a round guardhouse in the rear part of the park has also been preserved.

A dendrological rarity of the park is a small-leaved linden with a chest-height girth of 660 cm, whose width at ground level is a respectable 900 cm. Rare pedunculate oaks with a girth of 150–200 cm have also been preserved in abundant numbers. Another curiosity is twelve Canadian poplars imported from the Netherlands, from which all the poplars in the area originate.

In 1945, the Lednice estate was nationalized, and the manor house standing by the park was converted into a school. The village of Lednické Rovne will certainly charm you with the Slovenské sklárske múzeum museum as well, which will guide you through the history of glassmaking in the village. After visiting Botanický park, head straight to the summer swimming pool and enjoy the hot sun rays by the pools. If you like the idea of such a relaxing holiday, you can find the best accommodation near Botanický park Lednické Rovne on our accommodation in Lednické Rovne page. Botanická záhrada Bratislava

Botanická záhrada Bratislava

Bratislava

Botanická záhrada v Bratislave falls under the patronage of Comenius University and serves as a university scientific and educational workplace. If you wish to visit it, head to the city of Bratislava, specifically to the Karlova Ves borough, near the premises of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. The exhibition is located both in the open air and in greenhouses, with the Vydrica river flowing through its grounds. The garden's mission is to maintain as well as expand collections of living plants, provide expert information to the public, and assist in educational activities.

Botanická záhrada was established in 1942, and the construction of the exhibition lasted until 1950. Its development was initiated by Professor František Nábělek, head of the Botanical Institute. The location for its construction was chosen due to a constant water supply, which, for obvious reasons, is truly essential. Later, after World War II, greenhouses were built on the property, an irrigation system was installed, and nearly 3,000 plant species were planted. As time went on, the garden acquired the character of a park. An andesite rockery, a limestone ravine, and a rosarium were added, opening it even more to the public.

In the greenhouses, you will find yourself in another world. They are designed not only to fulfill their purpose but also to captivate visitors. For example, you can find yourself in the middle of a jungle, which is a truly exceptional experience in Bratislava. You will visit the utility plant greenhouse, which focuses on tropical and subtropical economic crops. Furthermore, there is a greenhouse with Australian flora that many visitors would otherwise never see live. The Victoria greenhouse focuses on moisture-loving and thermophilic tropical and subtropical flora. The Cactus greenhouse, as the name suggests, focuses on cacti and succulents. The Palm greenhouse boasts a collection of palms, araucarias, cycads, and various other exotic plants. Finally, in the connecting corridors, you can admire collections of ficuses, orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, and ferns.

The open-air area is a truly magnificent collection of flora of various species. In the rosarium, there is an exhibition of 120 rose species. The Japanese garden, the display of Mediterranean vegetation, and the peat bog are all wonderful. You will admire a collection of exotic and native trees, rhododendrons and azaleas, winter-hardy and frost-resistant cacti, as well as beds of annuals and perennials. The landscaped rock gardens have their own charm; you will find andesite, slate, basalt, limestone, granite, travertine-tufa rockeries, and a slag lava rockery.

Botanická záhrada is open to the public from April to the end of October. Visitors often come to the botanical garden to relax, sort out their thoughts, and gather energy from the plants. The combination of colors, scents, and the overall environment has a beneficial effect on the human soul. You can sit on various benches or in shelters, but we also know a better way. Grab a blanket, spread it out on the freshly mown grass, lie down—perhaps with a book in hand—and let the warm sun rays caress you. It has its own extra charm!

Mothers will appreciate the well-maintained paths, making it easy to stroll around with a stroller, and children even have a small playground here. However, they will certainly enjoy exploring various plants much more, and perhaps they will even spot a lizard basking in the sun on a rockery. If they like fairytales, they will feel like they are in one in the botanical garden. The pond overgrown with water lilies looks just like the place where Thumbelina ended up. If hunger catches you, you can buy a small bite at the snack bar.

When planning your trip to Bratislava, do not miss Botanická záhrada. It is located near ZOO Bratislava, forming a perfect combination for a trip. Your best bet is to book accommodation near Botanická záhrada Bratislava for a few days right away. Get inspired on the accommodation in Bratislava - Karlova Ves page as well. Zoologická záhrada Malkia Park

Orechová Potôň

Malkia Park in Orechová Potôň is a unique place that opened its gates to the public on June 4, 2016. Orechová Potôň is a village in the Dunajská Streda district. The park is primarily home to large felines that were abused or unwanted, but other animal species have gradually been added as well. Many animals that were already born in captivity and thus would unfortunately not survive in the wild have found their sanctuary here. While they do not get freedom, they receive a lot of love and the necessary care.

The ZOO got its name from the first animal rescued by the zookeepers and founders of the park. It was the lioness Malkia. Her name means "queen" in the Swahili language, and perhaps that is why locals sometimes call Malkia Park the "royal park". Malkia Park is home to many impressive felines, but you will also find zebras, camels, donkeys, goats, sheep, llamas, gibbons, capuchins, lemurs, tortoises, meerkats, parrots, and waterfowl. Most of our charges have a story. Many are strong, and perhaps you will hold back tears at some of them, but each of them ultimately ended happily.

The ZOO offers not only a classic visit but also organizes experiential or weekend stays. You can become an animal keeper for a day. You will look at the operation of the ZOO from another perspective and understand how much love zookeepers must have within themselves to make the animals in the ZOO happy and content. Malkia Park thinks primarily of the youngest ones. How about preparing an unforgettable birthday celebration for them right in the ZOO? Thematic decoration, plenty of fun, and interesting facts about animals are a great birthday gift in themselves.

Malkia Park even offers the opportunity to become an adoptive parent of one of the animals. The animal you adopt in this way will receive exemplary care for all your financial contributions. As a "parent", you will receive an adoption certificate, free entry to the park, and a small token of appreciation. In addition, you can participate in a special tour designated for adoptive parents. Of course, your name will be included on a wooden plaque placed directly at the enclosure of "your" animal. Once the adoption period expires, the ZOO will give you the plaque as a souvenir.

For the youngest visitors, there is also a children's playground and a children's world in the park to entertain them in case of inclement weather. You can also leave the park with a nice souvenir from the gift shop. There is also a bistro located within the premises.

A visit to Malkia Park will tug at your heartstrings. Whether you are big or small, the touching stories and the strong mission of the park, which decided to rescue suffering animals, will leave an emotion in you. The fact that someone helps those who cannot help themselves is simply admirable. If you have decided to visit, we recommend booking accommodation near Malkia Park. Why not take a proper trip with your family and visit other attractions in the surroundings of Dunajská Streda? In summer and winter alike, you will enjoy, for example, Thermalpark Dunajská Streda. We guarantee you unique experiences that neither you nor your little ones will forget.

MiniFARMA Lubina

MiniFARMA Lubina

Lubina

In the district of Nové Mesto nad Váhom, the homesteads near the village of Lubina hide a small treasure. MiniFARMA Lubina is a wonderful place for children and their parents, which was created gradually under the hands of a young family that decided to move from the hustle and bustle of the big city to the nature below Javorina. In the area, you can feel that it is built and embellished with love for animals, which received a home here without cages or bars.

This exceptional place was actually created by complete accident. The family that started their new life on the homesteads brought with them a tiny mare and two mini pigs. On the spacious plot of land with plenty of green area, mini versions of farm animals such as goats, horses, sheep, donkeys, geese, ducks, and many others were gradually added. On one hectare, more than 100 animals that are unique especially for their small stature live together today. It often happened that people on a walk opened the gate themselves to take a closer look at the farm inhabitants. This gave the owners the idea to open the gates of the premises officially as well, thus providing an unusual experience to the general public. The dream became a reality in 2013.

From the beginning, it was a simple vision: to create a relaxation space for families where both young and old would enjoy direct contact with animals. At the same time, the owners did not want to keep the animals in cages or limit visitors' stay to an hour or two. Just as they granted freedom to the animals, they granted it to people too. They ensured unlimited access to the enclosures with animals, where visitors can observe, pet, or feed them in their natural environment. Everything is supervised by friendly and experienced animators who will gladly explain how to approach the animals so that you take away the greatest experience possible. With a smile, they will also answer all the questions your children might be curious about. You can spend as much time with the animals as you need, and the pace of the tour is truly in your hands, or rather, in your feet?

If you get tired or hungry, you can comfortably sit down in the relaxation areas of the complex where animals do not have access, but where you will not lose sight of them either. Comfortable bean bags and hammocks will offer you pleasant relaxation. Children will have fun on traditional playgrounds or discover the charm of the forest, water, and straw playground. In fairy-tale houses or on lookout towers, they will feel like princesses and princes. Pedal tractors, slides, or swings are also prepared here. For schools and groups, an online reservation form is available where they can easily book a tour in advance.

We guarantee that you will not want to leave the complex, as it is simply an oasis of peace and relaxation where you stay connected with nature from the moment you step inside until the gate closes behind you. You will surely be pleased that near MiniFARMA Lubina you will find pleasant accommodation options. The comfort of guesthouses or cottages in Stará Turá is within reach. After a pleasant rest, you can set out to discover other beauties in the surroundings. You can admire Vojenská veža na Jelenci, which is one of the peaks of Biele Karpaty. You can show children Mestské múzeum Stará Turá, where you will learn about the history of the local region. Železničné múzeum Stará Turá, which a group of local enthusiasts renovates and preserves for future generations in their free time, boasts rare exhibits of historical trains. In summer, you can refresh yourself and have fun on the shores of Vodná nádrž Dubník. Do you know the legend of the bloody lady of Čachtice? You can experience it firsthand at Čachtický hrad, which we definitely recommend visiting.

Sysľovisko Muránska planina

Sysľovisko Muránska planina

Muráň

Sysľovisko na Bielych vodách near Muráň represents one of the largest and most popular ground squirrel colonies in Slovakia, where these small rodents have become accustomed to the presence of people.

The location is situated on the southern edge of the Národný park Muránska planina (Muránska Planina National Park), approximately 2.5 kilometers past the village of Muráň in the direction of Predná Hora, in the Revúca district. The ground squirrel habitat was established in a place where ground squirrels thrive thanks to the regular grazing of cattle and donkeys, which keep the grass short—a factor that is crucial for these animals in terms of safety from predators. Thanks to years of work by conservationists, the local ground squirrels are remarkably tame and are not afraid to come up to visitors if they sense food in the form of sunflower seeds, apple pieces, or carrots. In addition to hundreds of ground squirrels, the area is also home to the aforementioned donkeys, which are equally affectionate and complete the idyllic atmosphere of a mountain pasture. The observation season is limited by the ground squirrels' winter hibernation, so the location is mainly accessible from March to the end of September. The entire space is sensitively maintained with an emphasis on nature conservation and educating visitors about the importance of biodiversity in the national park.

What can you find here?

In the area, you will find extensive meadows dotted with hundreds of ground squirrel burrows and information boards about the life of the European ground squirrel and the protection of Muránska planina. At the entrance, there is a small snack bar or stall where you can purchase suitable food for the animals, and simple seating is also available. Part of the location includes a pasture for donkeys that move freely among people and love to be petted.

Who is the place suitable for?

The place is a total paradise for families with young children, who will be thrilled by direct contact with the animals and the opportunity to feed them by hand. It is also sought after by nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and tourists as a pleasant and easy stop while exploring Muránska planina. Given the grassy terrain, sports footwear is recommended, and on sunny days, one should not forget headwear, as the meadows are not shaded.

What can you visit in the surroundings?

From the nearby village of Muráň, a marked trail leads to the majestic Muránsky hrad, which is the third highest-located castle in Slovakia. You can also visit the recreational area at Predná Hora with a wellness center or go on a hike to the hunting lodge on the meadow below the castle. Prírodný park AVES

Štiavnické Bane

Štiavnické Bane belong to sought-after places in Slovakia that are visited by a large number of tourists mainly during the summer season. It is also worth going to the Prírodného parku AVES, where you will find many interesting animals, plants, and other attractions.

Within the Prírodného parku AVES, you can experience wonderful moments and thus spend a day in contact with nature. You will be captivated by unconventional gardens such as the rain, Japanese, Provençal gardens, mountain meadow, and mountain rock garden. Right on them, you can observe the method of cultivating specific plant species. Much more unconventional is the exterior vertical garden in Slovakia, which retains rainwater. However, do not miss the exclusive tropical garden either, where the largest freshwater fish in the Vyza lives in an aquarium. Its original home is in the estuary of the Mekong river in the tropical monsoon zone.

You do not have to love only plants to direct your steps to this park. A falconry training demonstration, organized multiple times during the day, is intended for all age groups. The bolder ones can not only admire these feathered birds of prey and owls but also feed large parrots or visit the terrarium where crocodiles, an iguana, turtles, and a chameleon live peacefully. In the tropical rainforest, monkeys from various species of the world run around carefree.

This place is ideal mainly for families with children. If your little ones are not interested in the animals or the diverse plants, they can romp around on one of the playgrounds. The park is part of the Základnej školy s materskou školou Maximiliána Hella v Štiavnických Baniach. It is open to the general public during the main summer holidays, but you can also get into it in May and June during weekends.

To enjoy your stay in the region truly to the fullest, we also recommend other trips to surrounding attractions in Štiavnických Baniach. Among the favorites is the Bašta Štiavnické Bane, in which the founder built a museum dedicated to the native of the village, Maximiliánovi Hellovi. You can cool down on hot summer days in the Veľkom Richnavskom jazere. The secrets connected with this mining region can be explored in the Banskom múzeu v prírode - Banská Štiavnica. A couple in love can also head to the Banky Lásky - Dom Sládkovičovej Maríny.

Do you not feel like rushing home? Book your accommodation in Štiavnických Baniach and enjoy this village to the full. The offer includes not only cottages in Štiavnické Bane but also spacious apartments. We will be happy to help you with the selection of accommodation.

The attraction is located in the spa town of Bojnice, in the Prievidza district, right in the area below the castle on Zámok a okolie street. ARAKOVO specializes in breeding various species of parrots, especially imposing macaws, cockatoos, and African greys, which are hand-reared and accustomed to human company. Visitors have the opportunity not only to observe the parrots but also to feed them with prepared food, let them land on their shoulder or hand, and take pictures with them. The entire experience takes place in the presence of expert caretakers who provide interesting information about the lives, intelligence, and temperament of individual birds. The facility emphasizes education on the conservation of these endangered species and proper care for exotic birds. Since these are living creatures, operations are partly dependent on the season and weather, so it is advisable to check current availability before visiting.

What can you find here?

In the area, you will find spacious aviaries and contact zones where dozens of parrots of various sizes and colors move freely. Bird food mixtures intended for the birds and professional staff who will teach you how to handle the feathered animals correctly and safely are available for visitors.
