The building was completed in 1886, and the actors who first stepped onto the boards that mean the world were from Hungary and Germany. They performed as guests on the stage until 1920.

In 1920, the Slovenské národné divadlo began writing its history. Operas, ballets, and drama plays were presented to audiences until the 1950s. Subsequently, after a hall for drama was established, the Historická budova SND was reserved for opera and ballet. The theater has undergone several renovations. The building will captivate you at first sight. Its exterior is grand, preserved in an eclectic style. The centerpiece consists of 5 busts of prominent personalities located on its facade. Originally, there were original busts of F. Liszt, W. Shakespeare, J. W. Goethe, and two Hungarian writers, J. Katona and M. Vörösmarty. In 1936, they were taken down during repairs, and to prevent their destruction, they were placed in the Slovenská národná galéria. Currently, there are copies on the facade, where a bust of W. A. Mozart stands instead of the bust of Vörösmarty. In front of the building, the artistically valuable Ganymedova fontána will also catch your attention.

Bratislavský hrad

Bratislavský hrad

Bratislava

Bratislavský hrad, proudly towering over the Dunaj river, is considered one of our national symbols. Visiting our capital city should be a duty for everyone, and the castle is no exception. However, its past was not always rosy.

The castle lies on the castle hill, which is considered the southernmost spur of the Malé Karpaty mountain range. Located here was an important strategic point, a ford, thanks to which the castle gained good connections with the other bank of the Dunaj.

The first inhabitants were likely dwelling on the castle hill as early as 4,500 years ago, although this could not be proven. Stone structures stood on the castle hill during the 9th century. There was even a brick basilica standing here. However, we only encounter the castle in the year 907, when it bore the name Pressalauspruch. The downfall of Great Moravia occurred, and the castle became an important border castle.

Bratislavský hrad was subjected to fierce raids by the Tatars. It resisted them in 1241. Despite the castle's success, the king at the time, Belo IV, decided to improve the existing fortification. He focused mainly on strengthening the western side of the castle, from where he expected the most raids. A large residential tower and a defensive tower, today known as Korunovačná veža, were built.

The castle underwent several major changes; one of the largest began during the reign of Žigmund Luxemburský, who came to power in 1387. The reason was the threatening risk of Hussite raids. A new two-story palace was built.

When Bratislava became the center of the entire country, it was necessary to renovate the castle again. This took place in the years 1552–1560. The castle received two new wings, and its interior spaces were also renovated.

Perhaps you cannot imagine it today, but for long centuries, the castle had only two floors and two towers. The castle began acquiring its current contours during the reign of the Pálffy family, when the third floor and the remaining two towers were built between 1635 and 1639. The golden age of the castle continued during the reign of Mária Terézia, but after her death in 1780, the castle gradually declined. It was no longer needed and became a seminary. Among others, Anton Bernolák and Juraj Fándly studied here. Neither did this seminary last long. In 1802, the castle was acquired by the army, which converted it into barracks. In 1811, a terrible fire engulfed the castle, turning it into a ruin. Subsequently, the castle lay in ruins for many years and received a dignified reconstruction only after 1953. It underwent its most recent reconstruction only recently, and there is no longer any sign or trace of its dark past.

In conclusion, an interesting fact. Do you think the castle has a square shape? Many people think so, but it is not true. The reality is that each castle wall has a different length. The walls measure 85.20 meters, 85.17 meters, 77.15 meters, and the last one measures less than 60 meters. Their width is also different. Treat yourself to a visit to the castle; in addition to the permanent exhibition of the Slovenské národné múzeum, this national symbol offers an unforgettable view of Staré Mesto, Petržalka, as well as the deep waters of the Dunaj.

It is most ideal to stay near the castle in Staré Mesto. You will find luxury hotels or stylish guesthouses here. Cheaper accommodation is offered by the outskirts of the city, where there is no shortage of private rooms and apartments for rent. Bratislava has dozens of beautiful places, and the very first one you should visit is Bratislavský hrad.

Primaciálny palác

Primaciálny palác

Bratislava

Did you know that Primaciálny palác in Bratislava – Staré Mesto is among the most sought-after attractions in Bratislava? This landmark takes the breath away of visitors and locals alike thanks to its architecture. The 18th-century Neoclassical palace is the current seat of the mayor of the capital of Slovakia, and its designated areas serve as exhibition spaces for the city gallery.

In the historical core of the city, Cardinal Jozef Batthyány had the most magnificent and largest palace of the Hungarian Kingdom era built. Under the guidance of Viennese architect Melchior Hefele, this vision was successfully completed in 1818. An extraordinarily impressive appearance, a fantastic location, and its historical moments multiply the value of the palace. In addition to coronations, the Peace of Pressburg was signed here in the 18th century. Today, the palace serves as the city hall.

The exterior of the palace is beautiful. Along with many elements, you can notice a unique façade, the stone coat of arms of Archbishop Batthyány, or admire colossal statues placed in a symmetrical arrangement alongside four vases. The Fontána sv. Juraja fountain in the courtyard will also capture your interest. Upon stepping inside, you will feel like you are in a fairytale. There are beautiful spaces of the picture gallery, period-furnished lounges, and views into the grand Zrkadlová sieň, which today is used for city council meetings, concerts, or other events. You can rent space for a wedding, reception, conference, coffee break, cocktail, banquet, wine reception, or a socially significant event.

The overall experience of the interior will be enhanced by Kaplnka sv. Ladislava. Come to a mass on one of the Sundays and experience your spiritual moment here. Among the most valuable exhibits of the palace is a set of 6 wall tapestries with a 17th-century mythological motif, located in 5 lounges of the northern palace wing. These English royal tapestries possess enormous value. Visit the premises of this former luxurious archbishop's residence during opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday and soak up its amazing atmosphere. Michalská brána

Michalská brána

Bratislava

The Bratislava city district of Staré Mesto attracts tourists as well as locals with many attractions, whether cultural, artistic, or historical. Each of them has its own story. Michalská brána is among them as well. It is the only preserved gate from the original four through which people once entered the fortification of medieval Bratislava.

It received its name from the settlement and church of St. Michael, which was located in front of the fortification. In the 16th century, it was demolished due to the Turks. The settlement is now recalled only by a pink gravestone incorporated into the masonry of the tower. It is visible upon entering it, from the inner side, at approximately the height of the third floor.

The tower was built at the end of the 14th century, but throughout its lifetime it underwent many renovations and alterations. It is a fascinating blend of various styles, as there is a noticeable Gothic influence in the lower part of the tower, the upper floors bear hints of the Renaissance, and the elegant tower with a bulbous dome originated during the Baroque period. In the past, a drawbridge, a drawbridge tower, and strong drawbridge gates were also part of it.

The massive tower soars to a height of 51 meters. Once, a trade route to Moravia led through its gate. Today, the marking of the historical coronation route passes through the gate. Balancing on its tip is a copper statue of the Archangel Michael slaying a dragon, created by Peter Eller. Over time, the statue was significantly damaged and was removed from the tower in 1845. During its repair, a box containing literal historical treasures was removed from it. Among others, a copper plate engraved with text about the author of the statue, banknotes and copper coins from the time of the statue's last repair, a list of city council members, and two pieces of parchment. One of them contained text written in Latin. It stated that the statue was crafted during the reign of Maria Theresa and repaired during the reign of Francis I. There was also a list of saints and their relics stored in a silver-plated box.

On the right side, right next to the gate, house number 15 is seemingly glued to Michalská veža. It is a rarity. With its width of 1.3 meters, it is likely the narrowest house in Bratislava, as well as in all of Europe. Another point of interest is the kilometer zero marker with compass points, displaying the distances to 29 European and world capitals. Furthermore, a laser beam is emitted from the southern window of the tower, indicating the route of the original Korzo promenade.

In the Middle Ages, bad deeds were punished in truly cruel ways. There were so-called cages of shame where the offender was placed. When the Bratislava cage of shame was removed and stored in the municipal depot, a pillory was erected in front of Michalská brána. The offender was hung on it with a large, heavy stone ball attached to their leg. Passersby could spit on them.

When you step out onto the balcony of Michalská brána, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the castle hill, the villa neighborhood on the hills, the historical city center, and the individual roofs and towers of Bratislava. Inside the tower is Múzeum zbraní. While climbing up the tower across seven floors, visitors will view medieval weapons and armor, tournament equipment, firearms, and an exhibition of all the crafts related to the defense of the medieval city.

Especially during exam periods, the surroundings of Michalská brána are often full of silently walking students. Rumor has it that if a lazy student manages to walk through the alley under the arches of Michalská brána without uttering a single word, they will surely pass their exam. Whether true or a myth, a large number of them try it every year.

When you come to admire the individual attractions in Bratislava, definitely do not miss Michalská brána, one of the iconic symbols of our capital city. However, not only this place deserves your attention, which is why we recommend making a multi-day trip to Bratislava. The pages accommodation Bratislava and specifically accommodation Bratislava Staré mesto will help you choose the right accommodation, leaving you only with planning your trip.

Budova Slovenského rozhlasu

Budova Slovenského rozhlasu

Bratislava

An inverted pyramid. This is also how the architectural gem of Bratislava, the Budova Slovenského rozhlasu building, can be described. Due to technological and structural complexity, its construction took as long as 16 years. The authors of this original building are a trio of architects: Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič, and Barnabáš Kissling. The project originated back in 1967 at a time when socialist realism dominated Slovak art. Stop by and take a look at this 80-meter unique structure, which proudly holds the title ”Building of the Century in Slovakia". You can find the headquarters of Slovenský rozhlas in Bratislava's Staré Mesto.

The radio building features generous interior spaces, a top-tier concert hall, and well-equipped recording studios. Suspended in space on a steel structure with springs, the concert hall houses one of the largest organs in Central Europe, featuring 6,300 pipes. Outstanding acoustics offer visitors a unique musical experience. Office spaces are located around the entire perimeter of the building, behind which lies an atrium and an inner pyramid. Glass facades provide views of the surroundings and ensure plenty of daylight inside.

The first test broadcast from this building took place in 1984. Regular broadcasting of Slovenský rozhlas was launched on March 27, 1985. Since its completion, the building has undergone no major reconstruction, meaning most of the equipment is original. Throughout the entire building, you will find a single type of carpet, a single type of floor tiling, and a single type of railing. The massive pedestal housing the main recording spaces is thoroughly insulated against any noise. Located above it is the editorial and broadcasting section. Perhaps the most interesting part of the building is the terraced space between the 6th and 9th floors, which is spatially rich and interwoven with a number of unusual passages and footbridges.

Did you know that the Budova Slovenského rozhlasu was classified as a national cultural monument in 2017? With its values, it represents the architectural heritage of post-war modern architecture and is one of the crowning works of late modernism in Slovakia.

Galéria Nedbalka

Galéria Nedbalka

Bratislava

Galéria Nedbalka is situated in the center of Bratislava, on one of the oldest streets built on the city walls. From the outside, the building looks like an Austro-Hungarian style classicist structure, but inside you will find a small Slovak Guggenheim. Take a walk through the interesting interior of the gallery, where you will discover works by Slovak fine art greats across five floors.

Throughout the year, the gallery is open to you in the afternoon hours daily, except for Mondays. The airy circular spaces of the gallery feel very pleasant and perhaps in a way also relax the mind, allowing it to perceive the beauty of the local cultural heritage more intensely. This unique building previously served as a residential house, later being used as a restaurant or staff canteen. Minimal maintenance of the building contributed to its decay and the need for complete demolition. In 2012, the gallery building underwent its latest reconstruction, which brought it to its current form. The architects who drew up the design even won the significant Dušan Jurkovič Award, awarded by the Association of Architects of Slovakia.

The collection of works you can find in the gallery premises consists of more than 1,000 exhibits by 83 Slovak artists, predominantly from the 19th and 20th centuries. It all started with the collecting passion and vision of three philanthropists who began writing the unrepeatable story of Galéria Nedbalka. Together, they managed to build a stable institution that made a private collection of Slovak art accessible to the general public. The gallery features a permanent exhibition that guides visitors through the fine art modernism in Slovakia. It introduces its birth and formation during the period between the two World Wars, as well as the work of contemporary representatives. At its inception stood Ľudovít Fulla and Mikuláš Galanda, who through their artistic manifesto expressed a fundamental attitude toward the understanding of art and the mission of the artist himself. The group that subsequently formed precisely around Mikuláš Galanda was heavily criticized during socialist times, and even excluded from the artistic community, which was related to a ban on activities and exhibiting works. They received awards and social recognition only after 1989.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery also organizes various current exhibitions, which often have a deeper meaning in the form of charity auctions of certain works. During your tour, an excellent coffee will surely hit the spot, prepared with a smile for you in the cafe, where you can also immerse yourself in interesting literature. You can purchase a small item or a commemorative souvenir at the local Artshop. It is also possible to rent the gallery spaces for various social events, discussions, receptions, lectures, business meetings, concerts, and you can even have your wedding ceremony held here. You just need to arrange everything in advance.

When you choose to head to Western Slovakia and find yourself right in the capital, definitely do not rush home quickly. Beautiful accommodation options can also be found near Galéria Nedbalka. Guesthouses, hotels, and apartments in Bratislava will surprise you with their equipment and hospitality. The city conceals many corners worth seeing. The Cumil statue, St. Michael's Gate, Bratislava Castle, or the UFO Observation Deck are just a fraction of the mandatory stops when touring the city center. From a different perspective, you will perceive everything during a sightseeing cruise on the Danube. Do not hesitate and set out for a new adventure.

Bratislavská Kalvária

Bratislavská Kalvária

Bratislava

Bratislavská Kalvária was one of the first significant calvaries not only in Slovakia, but also in the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. You can find it in the district of Staré Mesto, on Kalvársky vrch in Bratislava. It was built in memory of the battle against the Turks near Vienna in 1683. According to most lexicons that refer to the Bible, a calvary is understood as a place or hill where Jesus Christ was crucified in Jerusalem. It is also associated with the depiction of the Way of the Cross with 14 stations.

The establishment of the Kalvária dates back to 1694. Its construction was initiated by the Jesuits, members of the Society of Jesus. It was completed in the 1920s and thus became a dominant landmark of Prešporek at the time. A sad fact is that with the onset of the communist regime in the 1950s, it underwent targeted destruction and devastation. Instead of stations with crosses, you will only find pictures with liturgical texts nailed to trees. The Kalvária has been operating in a provisional mode for many years, but it is gradually being restored. In 2020, the reconstruction of the only preserved chapel began, and the restoration plan also mentions the reconstruction of the stairs.

The first station was located at the site of today's SAV public transport stop, near the church of Cyril and Methodius. Did you know that the Kalvária became a refuge in 1713 for the people of Bratislava who survived a plague wave there? A part of the original path has been preserved to this day and is gradually being revitalized, also thanks to the OZ Bratislavská Kalvária. Kalvársky vrch continues to serve as a place of prayer and occasional Stations of the Cross. Not far from Bratislavská Kalvária stands the Kostol Panny Márie Snežnej and a Lourdes cave with a marble statue of the Virgin Mary.

After a romantic walk along the Kalvária, head to the center of Bratislava and experience plenty of fun discovering great attractions with which our capital is practically packed. Take a stroll through Staré Mesto and take a nice photo with the statue of Čumil and Schöne Náci. Walk through Michalská brána and take a look at Dóm sv. Socha Schöne Náci

Socha Schöne Náci

Bratislava

To some a eccentric, to others an icon of the capital city of Bratislava. That is how Ignáca Lamára can be called. Do not know who is being talked about? Despite a difficult fate, this eternally smiling man in a tailcoat, with a top hat and a cane, became the model for the statue that adorns the streets of Starého Mesta. The legendary statue in the center of Bratislavy respectfully and with a smile greets all passersby.

Schöne Náci, real name Ignác Lamár, greeted passersby in the streets of Bratislavy for more than 40 years. Although a difficult fate befell him in life, his mother left him, and his father, with whom he cared for his sick brother, died early, Schöne Náci never gave up his smile and made his way through life like a true gentleman. A native of Bratislavy, born back in the times of Rakúsko-Uhorska, he was initiated into the shoemaking trade by his father. After his father's death, he made his way through life mainly as a theater stagehand. He frequently visited performances and adopted mimicry and gestures from actors, which gradually became part of him.

His favorite pastime was daily walks through the town. With his appearance, he drew attention, and the unassuming Ignáca became the legend Schöne Náci. The eternal dandy maintained his taste despite advancing fashion trends. Some looked at him strangely, while others shouted at him. Ignác always responded with a kind and friendly smile. He was popular with many and became a part of Starého Mesta. He ended his life journey in the 1960s in the hospital in Lehniciach. His remains were later transported to Bratislavy, and he found his final resting place at Ondrejskom cintoríne next to another legend, the well-known actor and comedian Júliusa Satinského.

The memory of Ignáca is commemorated by a life-sized statue, which is the work of the academic sculptor Juraja Meliša. Kuchajda

Bratislava

Jazero Kuchajda is a natural swimming area. It is located in the Nové Mesto district of Bratislava, not far from the railway station. It is a popular spot for summer concerts, swimming, and outdoor sports.

The name comes from the German word Kuhheiden. This area once served as a pasture for cows. Gravel mining created a huge pit that was subsequently filled by groundwater. Today, a large shopping centre and office buildings stand in close proximity to the lake, and trams run directly here. However, none of this changes the fact that you can perfectly unwind and relax at Kuchajda right in the middle of the capital city.

Jazero Kuchajda features gravel beaches with a gradual entry into the water. As soon as it warms up in Bratislava, bring a blanket and your relaxing day at the swimming area can begin. The water quality is regularly monitored for cyanobacteria, and safety updates are displayed on notice boards or on the district's official website. This natural swimming area is thus suitable for both young and old.

Children can have fun at the playground equipped with a slide and climbing frames. Sports enthusiasts can play volleyball, football, table tennis, or petanque at Kuchajda. Surrounding the entire lake is a 1.5-kilometre pathway suitable for running all year round. Showers and changing rooms are also available to visitors.

Even though this body of water is situated in the middle of bustling Bratislava, you will find plenty of greenery and trees here. People love coming here to relax on benches, chat with friends, or read a book. You can enjoy good refreshments at one of the local snack bars or restaurants. In summer, concerts and parties are held here.

It is definitely worth visiting for a longer stay. The Bratislava district of Nové Mesto offers many interesting places. You can also find tips for trips in Bratislava on our site. Botanická záhrada Bratislava

Botanická záhrada Bratislava

Bratislava

Botanická záhrada v Bratislave falls under the patronage of Comenius University and serves as a university scientific and educational workplace. If you wish to visit it, head to the city of Bratislava, specifically to the Karlova Ves borough, near the premises of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. The exhibition is located both in the open air and in greenhouses, with the Vydrica river flowing through its grounds. The garden's mission is to maintain as well as expand collections of living plants, provide expert information to the public, and assist in educational activities.

Botanická záhrada was established in 1942, and the construction of the exhibition lasted until 1950. Its development was initiated by Professor František Nábělek, head of the Botanical Institute. The location for its construction was chosen due to a constant water supply, which, for obvious reasons, is truly essential. Later, after World War II, greenhouses were built on the property, an irrigation system was installed, and nearly 3,000 plant species were planted. As time went on, the garden acquired the character of a park. An andesite rockery, a limestone ravine, and a rosarium were added, opening it even more to the public.

In the greenhouses, you will find yourself in another world. They are designed not only to fulfill their purpose but also to captivate visitors. For example, you can find yourself in the middle of a jungle, which is a truly exceptional experience in Bratislava. You will visit the utility plant greenhouse, which focuses on tropical and subtropical economic crops. Furthermore, there is a greenhouse with Australian flora that many visitors would otherwise never see live. The Victoria greenhouse focuses on moisture-loving and thermophilic tropical and subtropical flora. The Cactus greenhouse, as the name suggests, focuses on cacti and succulents. The Palm greenhouse boasts a collection of palms, araucarias, cycads, and various other exotic plants. Finally, in the connecting corridors, you can admire collections of ficuses, orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, and ferns.

The open-air area is a truly magnificent collection of flora of various species. In the rosarium, there is an exhibition of 120 rose species. The Japanese garden, the display of Mediterranean vegetation, and the peat bog are all wonderful. You will admire a collection of exotic and native trees, rhododendrons and azaleas, winter-hardy and frost-resistant cacti, as well as beds of annuals and perennials. The landscaped rock gardens have their own charm; you will find andesite, slate, basalt, limestone, granite, travertine-tufa rockeries, and a slag lava rockery.

Botanická záhrada is open to the public from April to the end of October. Visitors often come to the botanical garden to relax, sort out their thoughts, and gather energy from the plants. The combination of colors, scents, and the overall environment has a beneficial effect on the human soul. You can sit on various benches or in shelters, but we also know a better way. Grab a blanket, spread it out on the freshly mown grass, lie down—perhaps with a book in hand—and let the warm sun rays caress you. It has its own extra charm!

Mothers will appreciate the well-maintained paths, making it easy to stroll around with a stroller, and children even have a small playground here. However, they will certainly enjoy exploring various plants much more, and perhaps they will even spot a lizard basking in the sun on a rockery. If they like fairytales, they will feel like they are in one in the botanical garden. The pond overgrown with water lilies looks just like the place where Thumbelina ended up. If hunger catches you, you can buy a small bite at the snack bar.

When planning your trip to Bratislava, do not miss Botanická záhrada. It is located near ZOO Bratislava, forming a perfect combination for a trip. Your best bet is to book accommodation near Botanická záhrada Bratislava for a few days right away. Get inspired on the accommodation in Bratislava - Karlova Ves page as well. This way, you will have plenty of time to visit the surroundings and discover the attractions of Bratislava.

Letisko M. R. Štefánika

Letisko M. R. Štefánika

Bratislava

Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika is the largest airport in Slovakia and is located in Bratislava. You will find it just 9 km from the city center, in the city district of Bratislava - Ružinov, near the village of Ivanka pri Dunaji. Annually, it handles approximately 2 million passengers upon arrival and departure, records over 27,000 aircraft movements, and processes more than 26,000 tons of cargo.

The beginnings of regular air transport in Bratislava are connected with Czechoslovak State Airlines. The first flight took place on October 29, 1923, on the Prague – Bratislava route, using an Aero A.14 aircraft. The plane was then piloted by the chief pilot of Czechoslovak State Airlines, Karel Brabenec, and the first passenger was Václav König, an editor for Lidové noviny. The flight lasted approximately 3 hours and landed at the airport in Vajnory. Even then, it was clear that the proximity of the Malé Karpaty mountain range would be a limiting factor, so construction of Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika began in 1947.

Regular operation was launched in 1951. Terminal A – General Aviation Terminal (GAT) – handles private, business, and VIP passengers, as well as ambulance flights. Servicing is provided by 29 check-in desks located on the ground floor of the departures terminal. Terminal B is intended for arrivals and departures outside the Schengen Area countries, and Terminal C serves arrivals for aircraft from Schengen Area countries.

From Bratislava, you can fly to various popular destinations such as Dubai, Hurghada, London, Rome, and others. The airport's runway system consists of two perpendicular takeoff and landing runways with a concrete-cement surface, allowing the landing and movement of all aircraft types, from the smallest to the largest, such as the Boeing 747.

In the arrivals hall on the ground floor, in addition to check-in desks, there are also grocery stores, snack stands, and a newsstand. Additional airport services include a currency exchange office and ATMs, while passengers with disabilities are entitled to free assistance services. Luggage carts and luggage wrapping and weighing services are a matter of course. Parking is provided in parking lots P1 and P2.

If you are returning from vacation late at night, relax and book a short-term stay in our capital city. You can find accommodation near Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika on our page accommodation Bratislava. Diversify your itinerary and head into Staré Mesto (Old Town). Hrad Devín

Hrad Devín

Bratislava

Kriváň or Bratislavský hrad. What do they have in common? Both are considered our national symbols. We will introduce you to another one of them. It is hrad Devín, proudly towering on a high rocky cliff.

It is located a few kilometers west of our capital city of Bratislava. The village of Devín lies below the castle. From the castle cliff, there is a breathtaking view of the wide surroundings, the nearby Austrian borderland, and mainly the confluence of two large rivers, the Morava and the Dunaj. The castle hill excelled in its strategic position mainly thanks to the confluence of the two mentioned rivers. This was utilized by the Celts and later also by the Romans. The Roman Empire and its border reached all the way to the Dunaj river, and they built their settlement right on the castle hill. Later, the old Slavs followed up on it.

The castle hill also held a significant position during the glorious Veľká Morava. There was a defensive hillfort here. The first written mentions of the castle as such date back to 1223. However, its appearance is extremely difficult to determine, as the castle was conquered, demolished, and rebuilt several times. At the beginning of the 14th century, it underwent many changes of its owners. It became a royal castle, and to make it more comfortable for its inhabitants, it was gradually rebuilt into the Gothic style. Despite this, it did not lose its defensive military function, as it lay on the threatened Hungarian border.

In 1635, the castle came into the hands of the Pálffy family from Ardedu. During the period of their reign, the castle survived the anti-Habsburg uprising and also the uprising of František II. Rákoczi. In a later period, due to the condition of the castle, it was no longer representative to reside in it, nor did it meet the requirements of modern fortresses. For this reason, the castle became a warehouse and served for economic purposes. At the beginning of the 19th century, Bratislava and a part of Záhorie came into conflict with French Napoleonic troops. Despite the fact that they concluded a truce with them, the French blew up the castle in 1809.

Over time, Devín increasingly became a symbol of the state and a memory of Cyril and Methodius. In 1932, a purchase agreement was made between the Pálffy family and the state, and subsequently in 1935, the castle was taken over. In 1961, the castle was declared a national cultural monument.

If you like the majestic silhouette of the castle ruin so much that you want to have it above your head every morning, nothing is easier. The village of Devín itself offers many private accommodations and cottages that will satisfy even the more demanding ones. If you don't mind commuting to the castle, choose something else. Národná prírodná rezervácia Devínska Kobyla

Národná prírodná rezervácia Devínska Kobyla

Bratislava

The Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve is located in the Bratislava Region, between the city districts of Devín and Devínska Nová Ves. Its territory covers an area of 101.12 ha as part of the Devínska Kobyla Site of Community Importance (with an area of 643 ha, belonging to the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area). At the same time, the area is included in the NATURA 2000 network. A highly significant part of the area is the Štokerská vápenka nature reserve and the Sandberg paleontological site.

Formation and history of the Devínska Kobyla area

The territory has a long and rich history. The first settlements appeared here as early as the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC. Later, the highly important commercial Amber Road passed through here. Subsequently, the Celts entered the region and cleared the original vegetation. During AD, the Romans took control and established vineyards here. The area served as a fortress for Prince Rastislav during the Great Moravian Empire and witnessed battles against the Turks as well as the Napoleonic Wars. Until the mid-20th century, the area was mainly grazed by livestock, after which the meadows became overgrown with bushes and woody plants.

Devínska Kobyla is one of the parts of the western projection of the Carpathian arc, which is often referred to as a treasure trove of diverse geological phenomena. In its cross-section, we can find granite, as well as portions of limestone and dolomite. The area underwent various folding processes, erosion, and marine wave abrasion, resulting, for example, in a rock window or an abrasion cave. Between 14 and 16 million years ago, Devínska Kobyla was a rocky limestone coast of the Badenian Sea. This is evidenced by the Sandberg site, where fossils of about 350 animal species have been found.

The Sandberg site was discovered during sand mining for the needs of the Devínska Nová Ves brickworks. During the Tertiary period, this area was at times a cliff, at times part of a coastal island system, but also the seabed of the Tethys Ocean. Rich life flourished here, resulting in the fossil sites found today. Notable finds include gastropods, bivalves, sea urchins, shark teeth, and various bones—for example, from seals, rhinoceroses, bears, reptiles, moles, and Tertiary whales. Unique finds include the remains of Tertiary Pliopithecus (a distant human ancestor) and the teeth of Dryopithecus (an anthropoid ape).

Fauna and flora of the Devínska Kobyla reserve

The fauna of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve is richly represented by various animal species. Gastropods (such as Zebrina detrita, Chondrina clienta) can be found here in both xerophilic and thermophilic varieties. Be careful not to step on them. Insects (such as the European mantis or Saga pedo) are perhaps the most significant component of the surrounding fauna. Interestingly, only females of Saga pedo occur here in Slovakia; their reproduction occurs through unfertilized eggs. You will find more than 600 species of butterflies here (such as the Old World swallowtail or the Clouded Apollo). Beetles are also numerously represented (such as the stag beetle or Scarabaeus typhon), many of which are rare and protected. Vertebrates are also abundant here, represented by reptiles (such as the European green lizard or grass snakes) and amphibians (such as the European green toad or frogs). Avifauna is typical of the Bratislava region (such as goldfinches or tits), but we can also spot many rare species (such as the common kestrel or common buzzard). It is not unusual to encounter mammals as well, such as the red deer or roe deer, but also the wild boar or red fox.

The flora of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve has fascinated botanists since ancient times; Carolus Clusius was already exploring it in the 16th century. The southern part of the territory is mostly covered by grassy steppe with thermophilic grasses (such as Festuca rupicola) and many protected flowers (such as spring pheasant's eye or pasqueflower). Shallow soils formed by erosion are covered, for example, by rock buckthorn or feather grass. Their ability to bind and protect soil from erosion is highly valuable. The sandy slopes are dominated by the protected iris or the steppe relic Gypsophila fastigiata. Gullys are characterized by thermophilic shrubs (such as Mahaleb cherry or the protected European cornelian cherry) as well as rare orchids from the Orchidaceae family.

Just a stone's throw from the big city into nature

The area offers rich hiking opportunities that attract many visitors every year in all seasons. Marked hiking trails will take you to Weitov lom, Devín Castle, as well as through Úzky les to the Bratislava city district of Dúbravka or through Líščie údolie to the Bratislava city district of Karlova Ves. There, it is well worth visiting the Bratislava Zoo or the Bratislava Botanical Garden. Get inspired by other trip options offered on the website attraction of Bratislava.

Spending time in nature is therapy for the soul, and even an easy hike is therapy for the body. So why not treat yourself? We wish you a pleasant stay.

Dračí hrádok

Dračí hrádok

Borinka

You can find the ruins of Dračia hrádok, also known as Hadí hrad, in the Malé Karpaty mountain range, on the Úboč hill, approximately 2 km from the village of Borinka. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when the owners of the former royal Hrad Pajštún were the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok. The royal origin is also suggested by the similarity of the tower at Dračia hrádok to towers at other royal castles (Hrad Beckov, Plavecký hrad).

This slowly disappearing castle awaits you hidden above the valley of Stupavský potok, at an altitude of 370 m above sea level. There is not much information about what the small castle looked like in the past. An engraving that probably depicts its appearance can be found in Mestská galéria v Bratislave. However, experts differ in their opinions, and there are those who reject this assumption.

The area of the small castle consists of two elevated parts, a central prismatic tower, and the remains of the masonry foundation for the entrance bridge. By all accounts, the small castle perished in the 15th century during the Hussite raids into the territory of Západné Slovensko. Furthermore, it was built on geologically unstable bedrock, which was likely one of the main reasons why it was no longer restored after being damaged.

An asphalt road from the village of Borinka, which continues onto a forest path, will lead you to the remains of the castle. After roughly 800 m, you will come across a small area suitable for parking a car. The yellow-marked trail will take you directly to the ruins after a moderately challenging ascent. From the ruins of Dračia hrádok, you can continue your exploration further and reach the ruins of Pajštúnsky hrad.

If the idea of such a hike excites you, book accommodation near Dračia hrádok today. Záhorie is full of hiking as well as cultural and historical sights well worth seeing. It is entirely up to you which direction you take. An unforgettable experience will surely be a scenic boat cruise on the Dunaj or a visit to Bratislavský hrad. We believe you will enjoy your time in Záhorie and take home plenty of great experiences.

Jazero Nové Košariská

Jazero Nové Košariská

Rovinka

The Nové Košariská I. lake, also called Veľké Košariská or Veľké jazero Rovinka, is located near the villages of Rovinka and Dunajská Lužná, just 3 km from the Podunajské Biskupice district of Bratislava. Other lakes are also located in this area: Malé Košariská (Nové Košariská II.) and Nové Košariská (gravel pit lake). All three were formed as a result of gravel mining.

Veľké Košariská is 870 metres long and 500 metres wide, consisting of two parts separated by a small peninsula. One of the parts is shallower and surrounded by trees. The second part is deep, separated from the shallow area by a gravel drop-off, and is popular with scuba divers, as it reaches a depth of up to 40 metres very close to the shore. Several species of fish live in the lake; common ones include carp and pike, while catfish, zander, and eels are frequently observed, and freshwater jellyfish occur exceptionally in autumn.

Summer attracts vacationers to Košariská who like to refresh themselves in the crystal-clear water, which is nearly drinkable in quality, as proven by repeated official tests. Not all shores of the lake offer equally good access to the water; the best is from the gravel beach located in the eastern part. The more daring and free-spirited can visit the nudist beach. The remaining shores are steep, built up with holiday cottages in some places, and therefore often inaccessible. At the lake, food stands, toilets, and water sports equipment rentals, including pedal boats, are available for visitors. Sun loungers with umbrellas can also be rented here. The most common way to get to the lake is by car; riding a bicycle is not recommended, as there is no cycle path.

If you visit this area, make sure not to limit yourself to swimming and sunbathing by the water. Take a look at Bratislava as well, and discover the history and culture of the capital city. Art lovers are recommended to visit the Danubiana art museum at the Vodné dielo Gabčíkovo dam project. Adrenaline enthusiasts should head to the Areál Divoká voda complex in Čunovo.

Finding accommodation near Nové Košariská will certainly be easy, as it is just a stone's throw from Bratislava, which offers truly all types of accommodation. It depends on whether you prefer peace and quiet, choosing private accommodation on the outskirts of the city, or need all services close by, opting for an apartment in the centre. You can also choose based on your budget; hotels, guesthouses, and low-cost hostels are available.

Hrad Čeklís

Hrad Čeklís

Bernolákovo

The sad reality of today is that the once-glorious castles on our territory have turned into ruins. These are sought after primarily by avid hikers who crave stunning views and relaxation in nature. The ruin of castle Čeklís, located on the edge of the village of Bernolákovo, is one of them. Here, you can enjoy a view of the Podunajskú nížinu plain, Bratislavu, and Bratislavský castle.

The village of Bernolákovo is one of the relatively large villages located in the Senec district. During your visit, you will certainly notice its landmark: the Roman Catholic kostol sv. Štefana Kráľa church from 1355 and the adjacent kaplnku sv. Anny chapel from 1835. On the elevated terraced hilltop known as Várdomb (Hradný vrch), the hrad Čeklís castle is situated. In written records, it is also mentioned as Ceki, Chekluez, Cheklys, or Chekles.

Getting to this castle is manageable for everyone. The hike to this publicly accessible ruin is easy and will take you less than 10 minutes on foot. Simply park your car by the church and follow the dirt path alongside it directly to your destination. From a distance, you will see the silhouette of a tower emerging from the castle, although it is not part of the original structure.

The castle was likely built in the 13th century as a guard castle. The first reference to it dates back to 1209 as the old settlement of Šebeš, the royal cellar administrator. Many owners are mentioned in the castle’s history, including Charles Robert, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and the Eszterházy family. Unfortunately, the castle fell into ruin during Rákóczi's War of Independence. In 1720, a Baroque manor house was built near the castle. Today, only a fragment of a 1.9 m thick curtain wall remains. A sharp-eyed observer may also notice a vaulted discharge arch with a span of 5 m. The castle was reportedly protected by a moat as well. The round waterworks tower, which fits into the stylized scenery, might also help draw tourists here. This was built in 1905 on the remnants of a Baroque brick cistern.

Two legends are associated with the castle. The first tells the story of the beautiful Helena of Čeklís, who intoxicated the Turkish Grand Vizier with her wine and fled to svätojurský hrad castle before the Turkish invasion. She also wanted to trick the enemy by shoeing her horses backwards. As a result, the soldiers remained confused and, in their helplessness and rage, burned the castle down. The second legend, about the candles of Čeklís, might be told to you by the locals.

You can stay in the region for a longer period to explore all the points of interest beyond the traces of history. Golf lovers and sports enthusiasts can visit the largest golf resort with 55 greens, Black River Golf Resort Bratislava. It is located directly in this village, offering a great way to diversify your daily itinerary. Anglers choose the jazero Miloslavka lake as their place of relaxation. A walk through a landscape English park also has its charm; you can experience one at Kaštieli Eberhard in Malinovo. You can go for a swim on hot days at various water areas, with the closest option being Vajnorských jazerách.

You can plan your vacation or stay however you wish. The diverse range of accommodation around hrad Čeklís will certainly surprise you. Our accommodation providers will welcome you even at the last minute and provide you with a place to stay. You can choose from beautiful wooden cabins in Bernolákovo, which are optimal for larger groups, or a comfortable room in guesthouses in Bernolákovo. We will gladly provide you with all available information so you can book the best accommodation.

Čunovské jazerá

Čunovské jazerá

Bratislava

Čunovské jazerá lakes consist of two bodies of water, Veľké and Malé, and, according to general consensus, they are among the most beautiful lakes in the vicinity of Bratislava. These former gravel pits are situated between the Bratislava city districts of Rusovce and Čunovo, surrounded by a floodplain forest. They form part of the Ostrovné lúčky reserve and also belong to the CHKO Dunajské luhy protected landscape area, falling under the fourth level of nature protection.

In the past, the lakes served as a water source, which is why swimming was prohibited. Water recreation was later permitted; however, this subsequently led to water pollution (primarily caused by sunscreens), and swimming was banned once again. Although this ban remains in effect today, it does not deter holidaymakers, who arrive at Čunovské jazerá in large numbers during the summer season. Most frequently, they make use of two sandy-grassy beaches featuring a gradual entry into the water. Malé Čunovské jazero lake has become a favorite spot for nudists, as it features a beach sheltered by trees that offers privacy. The surroundings of the lakes are dotted with numerous small beaches, though entering the water is often more challenging. Since the lakes do not officially serve recreational purposes, no amenities such as snack bars or restrooms are available on site.

The ideal way to travel to Čunovské jazerá is by Bratislava public transport; the Čunovské jazerá stop is located 900 meters, about a 10-minute walk, from the water. You can also arrive by car, but parking directly by the water is not possible, so vehicles must be left further away. Another great option is reaching the lakes by bicycle along the Petržalská hrádza dike. A hiking trail connecting Rusovce and Čunovo also passes near the lakes.

We recommend starting your search for accommodation near Čunovské jazerá in Rusovce, where you can comfortably stay, for instance, in a guesthouse. This city district boasts the Roman fortification of Gerulata. You can also look for available accommodation capacity in Rovinka, where locals frequently provide private accommodation. Located near this municipality is another popular lake, Nové Košariská I. Accommodation in Bratislava is truly varied, and if you are willing to stay a bit further from the lakes, you can choose from a wide range of options.

Hrad Pajštún

Hrad Pajštún

Borinka

Even near Bratislava, in the village of Borinka, you can head out into nature, where you will discover a piece of history. Direct your steps to Hrad Pajštún, which is one of the sought-after attractions of Bratislava and its surroundings mainly for tourists. You will be captivated by the views of the surrounding landscape and, in great weather, you can see all the way to the Austrian Alps.

The castle was built in 1271 as a guard castle. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt into a Renaissance-style structure, which you can notice at the entrance gate. At the castle, there are 6 stone lion heads with different facial expressions. Originally there were 9. Even though a fire struck the castle in the 18th century, the Napoleonic army brought it to its knees in 1809. Only a ruin remained, which is used today by Bratislava climbers for rock climbing.

The post office directly in Borinka is included among the starting points. We can recommend it because it is the fastest hike to the castle from the village. It will take you about 35 minutes following the red trail. The castle can also be reached from the parking lot in Stupava, in the Little Carpathians. Walking along the yellow trail, you will spend a total of 50 minutes on foot through the Pod Pajštúnom reserve, part of Obora. You can also get there along the red trail from the tourist point Košarisko in the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area.

Evenings around the castle can be spent, for example, observing the sky with falling meteorites. In the summer period, you might appreciate camping. There is no need to be afraid of the legend about the cruel wife. The legend says that a beggar cursed her so that she would suffer for twice eight years. The ruler's cruel wife gave birth to 7 children, kept 1, and had the other 6 killed. At the master's instruction, the maid took the sons to a neighboring castle, where servants raised them. On the occasion of their 16th birthday, they were brought back to the castle and thus the legend about the suffering was fulfilled. Who knows what truth there is to that.

You might also discover other points of interest if you book accommodation near Hrad Pajštún and start exploring the surroundings. The village of Borinka is also interesting for Dračí hrádok. Could this castle have been built based on the legend about dragons? Active holidaymakers will be pleased by the views from the Rozhľadňa Svätý Jur observation tower and the opportunity to go see the pilgrimage site Lurdská jaskyňa Marianka. Christians carry their gratitude here in honor of the Virgin Mary. Even if you walk a lot and remain full of experiences, you can lay your head in apartments in Borinka or in local family guesthouses. The choice of accommodation with us is huge, just choose the right one for you on the subpage accommodation Borinka pri Bratislave.

Miloslavka

Miloslavka

Miloslavov

Miloslavka is a freshwater lake with an area of 7 ha, located in the cadastral area of the village of Miloslavov, in the Senec district. The location is situated only 5 km from Bratislava. The lake was formed around 1970 when Danube gravel deposits were dredged. A new biotope began to develop in the lake after cleanup works between 1995 and 2000. Since 2002, this water body has been used for fishing purposes. The lake received the name Miloslavka only in 2005.

Fishing at Miloslavka is possible from April to October, always only with the manager's knowledge; a telephone booking and reservation of a specific spot according to the lake's fishing plan are recommended. Swimming is not permitted here. We can recommend visiting this location even to groups where not all members are focused on fishing. While the fishermen are pursuing their hobby, others can go swimming to their heart's content at Nové Košariská, which are located less than 5 km away. You can also drop by for a rafting trip on the Malý Dunaj or explore Bratislava, where you will truly find a bit of everything, starting with Bratislavský hrad, through the zoologická záhrada to hrad Devín.

When looking for accommodation near Miloslavka lake, you can start in Rovinka, where you will find private accommodation options. Another option is, for example, the Bratislava city boroughs of Podunajské Biskupice, Vrakuňa, and Ružinov. Bratislava also offers cheap hostels suitable for short stays, for example, even for a single night.
