Štefánika took place on November 29, 1958. Alongside the observatories in Prešov, Levice, and Humenné, it thus became the fourth scientific research institute for astronomical observations in Slovakia established after World War II.

Kaštieľ v Hlohovci, also known as Hlohovský or Hlohovecký zámok, is the most significant historical monument of this beautiful town in the Trnavský kraj region. It was owned by Matthew Cák, the Ujlaky family, in the 15th century it became the seat of the Hussites, between 1524 and 1636 it was in the hands of the Thurzo family, and from 1720 it belonged to the Erdődy family. It was the Erdődy family who rebuilt the original castle into a Baroque manor house and brought it to the form we know today. In 1945, Soviet troops entered the town, and Hlohovecký kaštieľ became a hospital for Soviet soldiers. For a certain period after their departure, a garrison of the Czecho-Slovak army was stationed in the chateau. Today, the chateau is owned by the town of Hlohovec, which protects and continuously improves its historical jewel.

The use of the mansion by German soldiers during World War II, its devastation by the Russian army, or the completion of the destruction by local residents left damage on this monument.

You will find Katedrála sv. Jána Krstiteľa on Univerzitné námestie, in the northwestern part of Trnava. This Early Baroque cathedral church is the largest and most magnificent twin-towered church in Trnava. Did you know that the Early Baroque altar located here is the tallest altar in Slovakia as well as in Central Europe? In 1978, this church received an honor from Pope John Paul II, who elevated it to a cathedral, and in 2003 he also visited it.

The cathedral ranks among the most valuable historical monuments in Trnava and is part of the building complex of the former Trnavská univerzita. At the same time, it is the first Early Baroque sacred building in Slovakia. The origins of the church are linked to the second arrival of the Jesuits in Trnava. The donor of the church, who also financed the construction, was the Palatine of the Kingdom of Hungary, Mikuláš Esterházy. In 1629, he entrusted its construction to the Italian master builders Antonio and Pietro Spazzo.

The consecration of the church took place on August 30, 1637, by Bishop Juraj Lippai. The first Holy Mass in the church was celebrated by the Archbishop of Esztergom, Imrich Lóši. This single-nave, twin-towered church is 61 m long and 28 m wide. The interior is decorated with colorful paintings that will awe many a visitor. Above its main entrance is a pediment with statues of seated angels and a stone coat of arms of the Esterházy family. Beneath this coat of arms, the stone coat of arms of the Trnavská arcidiecéza is also placed.

The jewel of the entire interior is the magnificent all-wooden altar, which was completed in 1640. The altar is as high as 20.3 m and is the work of several carvers, sculptors, and gilders. Laugaricio. The Latin name that almost every Slovak knows. This speech, which is now almost dead, reached our territory in ancient times, and Trenčín is one of the proofs. A fortified settlement stood on the castle cliff even earlier. The present-day castle was built in its place. The first was a rotunda and later a defensive tower. The first documented data on the existence of the castle date back to the 9th century, making it one of the older castles. Like one of many castles on the Považie region, it had an extremely important defensive role. It protected the entire western border of Uhorsko.

Let us go back in time by several centuries. A Roman inscription from 179 proclaiming the victory of the Romans over the Germans is still preserved on the castle cliff. The entire castle, including this historical rarity, was controlled by the most famous ruler, the lord of Váh and the Tatras, Matúš Čák. He is rightly nicknamed Trenčiansky. He gave the castle new fortifications, and the tower bears his name.

No ruler lives forever. Not even Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. The castle was also managed by other famous names such as Žigmund Luxemburský or Štefan Zápoľský. Hussite expeditions from the west and Turkish attacks from the south were the cause of further expansion of the castle. In this period of the fifteenth century, extensive walls were also created, which you can find at the castle to this day. Until then, the castle was characterized mainly by Gothic verticality, but under the influence of reconstructions, the castle developed rather in a horizontal direction.

Unfortunately, the destruction of the castle was caused, as is customary, by a fire. It even engulfed the city. The year was 1790. The castle had to wait for its restoration until the 19th century, when the conservation of the castle walls took place.

The castle became only a ruin. After many repairs and long years of work, the castle is open to the public today. You will find more than enough in its premises. The town lies near the border with the Czech Republic, south of Dubnica nad Váhom and northeast of Trenčín. Thanks to its location in the middle of nature, the town is also referred to as the "Pearl of the Carpathians". The long-standing spa tradition is based mainly on the use of natural sulfur thermal water. All spa buildings stand in the center of town, so there is no need to commute more than 300 meters for treatments.

The Trenčianske Teplice spa ranks not only among the most sought-after Slovak spas, but also among the oldest. According to legend, the healing springs were discovered by a shepherd who was looking for a lost goat and smelled a sulfur odor from a nearby pond. He soaked his aching feet in the pond and experienced relief from the pain. Gradually, rumor of the healing water spread in the area. However, it is likely that the springs and their effects were known even before, probably known to the hunting tribes of the Quadi or Roman legions in the 2nd century. In written records, the healing effects of the local water are mentioned as early as the mid-13th century. From the 13th to the 16th century, Trenčianske Teplice, including the springs, belonged to the rulers of Trenčiansky hrad. The spa experienced its greatest boom during the time of the Illésházy family, who owned it for more than two centuries. During that period, the spa ranked among the most popular in Austria-Hungary. The year 1835 was a breakthrough for the spa when it was bought by the Viennese financier Juraj Sina, who modernized and rebuilt it. His family continued further reconstruction; his son Šimon had a hotel built and expanded the spa park, while his daughter Iphigenia contributed in 1888 by constructing the Hammam in an Oriental Moorish style, which remains the most precious historical monument preserved to this day.

The foundation of the treatment is natural thermal gypsum-sulfur water. Thanks to a temperature of 37 to 40 °C, it does not need to undergo any modification, cooling, or transport. In 1936, they were taken down during repairs, and to prevent their destruction, they were placed in the Slovenská národná galéria. Currently, there are copies on the facade, where a bust of W. A. Bratislavský hrad, proudly towering over the Dunaj river, is considered one of our national symbols. Visiting our capital city should be a duty for everyone, and the castle is no exception. However, its past was not always rosy.

The castle lies on the castle hill, which is considered the southernmost spur of the Malé Karpaty mountain range. Located here was an important strategic point, a ford, thanks to which the castle gained good connections with the other bank of the Dunaj.

The first inhabitants were likely dwelling on the castle hill as early as 4,500 years ago, although this could not be proven. Stone structures stood on the castle hill during the 9th century. There was even a brick basilica standing here. However, we only encounter the castle in the year 907, when it bore the name Pressalauspruch. The downfall of Great Moravia occurred, and the castle became an important border castle.

Bratislavský hrad was subjected to fierce raids by the Tatars. It resisted them in 1241. Despite the castle's success, the king at the time, Belo IV, decided to improve the existing fortification. He focused mainly on strengthening the western side of the castle, from where he expected the most raids. A large residential tower and a defensive tower, today known as Korunovačná veža, were built.

The castle underwent several major changes; one of the largest began during the reign of Žigmund Luxemburský, who came to power in 1387. The reason was the threatening risk of Hussite raids. A new two-story palace was built.

When Bratislava became the center of the entire country, it was necessary to renovate the castle again. This took place in the years 1552–1560. The castle received two new wings, and its interior spaces were also renovated.

Perhaps you cannot imagine it today, but for long centuries, the castle had only two floors and two towers. The castle began acquiring its current contours during the reign of the Pálffy family, when the third floor and the remaining two towers were built between 1635 and 1639. The golden age of the castle continued during the reign of Mária Terézia, but after her death in 1780, the castle gradually declined. It was no longer needed and became a seminary. Among others, Anton Bernolák and Juraj Fándly studied here. Neither did this seminary last long. In 1802, the castle was acquired by the army, which converted it into barracks. In 1811, a terrible fire engulfed the castle, turning it into a ruin. Subsequently, the castle lay in ruins for many years and received a dignified reconstruction only after 1953. It underwent its most recent reconstruction only recently, and there is no longer any sign or trace of its dark past.

In conclusion, an interesting fact. Do you think the castle has a square shape? Many people think so, but it is not true. The reality is that each castle wall has a different length. The walls measure 85.20 meters, 85.17 meters, 77.15 meters, and the last one measures less than 60 meters. Their width is also different. The castle was built after the Mongol invasion of our territory. The exact year is not known, but it is estimated to have been in the 1250s or 1260s. Originally, it served a guard function. It was possible to see all the way to our border with the Czech Republic from it. Thanks to oversight of the surrounding castles, Plavecký hrad could exchange signals with them in case of danger. Between 1579 and 1584, one of the first printing houses in Slovakia operated at the castle. Under the hands of the Protestant writer and church dignitary Peter Bornemisza, calendars, Bibles, a hymnal, and other printed materials were published here. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress with lower courtyards. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned since the 17th century. Conservation work is currently underway here. During its tour, you can notice the preserved outer masonry of the extensive fortification to this day, as well as a prominent cannon bastion and the masonry of the palace from the central tower. You can also admire the stone Renaissance gate.

A legend or myth is associated with almost every castle. This one is no exception. It is rumored that the castle was the setting of a story where a new Trojan War was supposed to break out. In the second legend, a woman does not dominate, but rather a man named Pavol, who became an orphan due to an unfortunate hunting accident, but the king took him under his patronage. On his deathbed, the king granted him his kingdom.

The castle in the beautiful spa town of Bojnice is among the most beautiful and significant monuments in Slovakia. It is located in Trenčiansky kraj, on the western edge of the town of Bojnice, in the district of Prievidza. How a wooden castle became a romantic château

The first mention of the existence of a castle with a settlement below it dates back to 1113, when it was still wooden. Later, in the 13th century, it was gradually rebuilt into a stone structure on an elevation, a travertine hill with a deep crater containing a mineral spring in its center. This spring was later converted into a 27-meter-deep well located inside a deep circular cave. The cave has a diameter of more than 20 meters, is 6 meters high, and has been open to the public since 1967. Small lakes up to 9 meters deep surround the cave.

In the 13th century, the core of the castle was surrounded by a wide fortification. Until then, the castle was property of the Poznan family, but toward the end of the century it was seized by Matúš Čák, who owned it until 1321. The subsequent owner was his illegitimate son Ján Korvín; after the death of King Matthias, the castle was occupied by troops of the Zápoľský family. In 1527, Alexander Turzo received the castle as a gift from King Francis, and the Turzo family rebuilt the core of the castle. As the massive fortification that had been built gradually since the end of the 15th century was sufficient for defense, emphasis shifted toward representation and residential comfort. Thus, the originally Gothic castle transformed into a Renaissance château. After the extinction of the Turzo family in 1636, the castle reverted to the Crown, and a year later Emperor Francis III pledged it to Pavol Pálfi.

In 1643, the Pálfi family (sometimes written Pálffy) received hereditary ownership of the castle, rebuilding began once again, and at the end of the 17th century it ultimately gained a Baroque appearance. Its appearance did not change significantly in the subsequent period. In 1852, after a long period of stagnation and decline, the estate was acquired by its last noble owner, Count Ján František Pálfi. Inspired by various French and Tyrolean Gothic castles, the Papal Palace in Avignon, and early Italian Renaissance architecture, he rebuilt the castle into a romantic château. Although the reconstruction had its own architect, Jozef Hubert, the Count himself designed, drew, and directed all the work of the grand Neo-Gothic reconstruction, which lasted a long 22 years. The Count acquired antiques at various European auctions to decorate the interior. Particularly striking is the Serbia-sourced 17th-century wall paneling of the Turkish Hall. In the chapel, he installed an Italian Gothic altar from the second third of the 14th century. A portrait of the owner is even featured in the cartouche of the carved ceiling in the Golden Hall. Unfortunately, he did not live to see the completed work; he died in 1908, two years before the reconstruction was finished.

Following Pálfi's death, disputes over the inheritance broke out. After an amicable agreement between the Count's heirs and the Czechoslovak state, specific collections were set aside to remain preserved, while the rest were auctioned off between 1924 and 1926. In 1939, the Baťa company bought the château and land, but after the war and the issuance of the Beneš decrees, the property fell to the state.

Since 1950, a museum has been located in the château as part of the Slovenské národné múzeum. Ján František Pálfi had already considered this idea; in his 1907 testament, he expressed the wish that Bojnický zámok along with its artworks be made accessible to the public. For some time, this was indeed the case. However, everything changed on May 9, 1950, when a major fire broke out, destroying all the château's towers, after which interior tours were prohibited. Following the subsequent restoration of the destroyed parts, the château's gates gradually began opening to the public once again. Finally, after structural reorganization and inclusion under the Ministry of Culture of the SSR in 1970, Bojnický zámok became a national cultural monument.

The ruins of the Uhrovec castle rank among the best-preserved in Slovakia. They are located on a castle hill above the village of Uhrovec. This craft town with market rights is the famous birthplace of such prominent personalities as Ľudovít Štúr and Alexander Dubček. The castle, which has guarded this charming town for centuries, stands on an outcrop of the Nitrické vrchy hills, part of the Strážovské vrchy mountain range, at an altitude of 591 m above sea level.

You can reach the castle from the village of Uhrovské Podhradie. Park your car in the former quarry above the village. From there, follow the trail to the information board. Turn right behind it. Afterwards, you have the option to choose either the steeper green trail or the more comfortable blue-marked hiking trail. Depending on which one you choose, the walk will take you 40 to 60 minutes. The total elevation gain of the trail is 276 m.

Upon reaching the top of the hill, you will find relatively well-preserved castle ruins. The layout has a triangular shape with corner bastions rising at the corners. One of them was triangular, the second was prismatic, and the third was a donjon type. The latter is a residential tower that served as the final refuge for the castle garrison during a siege. The Late Romanesque chapel with an emporium is also remarkably well-preserved and unique in Slovakia. Originally a Late Gothic palace, it underwent extensive Renaissance renovations. It fulfilled a defensive function mainly during the Turkish raids. In the 18th century, it was destroyed by fire. As the nobility preferred living in the more comfortable manor house in the village, the castle slowly fell into ruin. Today, efforts are underway for its conservation and partial reconstruction.

The origin of the castle is historically dated to the second half of the 13th century. Its construction was brought about by the wealthy Trenčín ispán (župan) Báša. However, the first written record of its existence, stating that Matúš Čák Trenčiansky exchanged land in Tekov for the Uhrovec castle, dates back to 1295. He owned the castle until his death in 1321. Subsequent owners included his successor King Charles Robert, Sigismund of Luxembourg, Stibor of Beckov, and Albert of Habsburg. In the 15th century, the castle was owned by the Pongrác family, who are associated with money counterfeiting. The last prominent noble family associated with the castle for two centuries was the Zay family.

Two legends are tied to the castle. One originates from the period of the Turkish raids. It mentions that the lady of the castle at the time mortally wounded the commander of a Turkish troop with an arrow from her bow while he was bathing in the stream below the castle. When his companions saw this, they panicked and galloped away. They were stunned by the accuracy and power of a woman's shot and imagined what would happen once the men started shooting. The distant views that the castle offered thanks to its location also contributed to its watchtower function. The first owner of the castle was one of the most famous landowners, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. Later, when the castle became royal property and its position grew stronger, people began to settle in its vicinity, and thus in the 14th century, the new settlement of Nové a Veľké Levice was founded.

In the 16th century, much like a large part of our country, the Levický hrad withstood Ottoman raids. During this period, a Renaissance mansion with massive fortifications was added to the castle. As the fighting by the Ottomans gained strength, at the end of the 17th century, the castle vice-captain decided to surrender the castle to the Ottomans without a fight. In less than a year, imperial troops managed to recapture the castle.

This significant military fortress also bears witness to the figure of the anti-Habsburg estate uprisings. František II. Rákoczi and his kurucs destroyed and burned down the castle before retreating from Levice at the beginning of the 18th century. The moat and the castle well were filled in, causing the castle to lose important features of a military fortress.

After those events, the castle was never restored again, it gradually fell into disrepair, and only ruins now remind us of ancient times. Visit Levický hrad and remember a piece of our history. The Bratislava city district of Staré Mesto attracts tourists as well as locals with many attractions, whether cultural, artistic, or historical. Each of them has its own story. Michalská brána is among them as well. It is the only preserved gate from the original four through which people once entered the fortification of medieval Bratislava.

It received its name from the settlement and church of St. Michael, which was located in front of the fortification. In the 16th century, it was demolished due to the Turks. The settlement is now recalled only by a pink gravestone incorporated into the masonry of the tower. It is visible upon entering it, from the inner side, at approximately the height of the third floor.

The tower was built at the end of the 14th century, but throughout its lifetime it underwent many renovations and alterations. It is a fascinating blend of various styles, as there is a noticeable Gothic influence in the lower part of the tower, the upper floors bear hints of the Renaissance, and the elegant tower with a bulbous dome originated during the Baroque period. In the past, a drawbridge, a drawbridge tower, and strong drawbridge gates were also part of it.

The massive tower soars to a height of 51 meters. Once, a trade route to Moravia led through its gate. Today, the marking of the historical coronation route passes through the gate. Balancing on its tip is a copper statue of the Archangel Michael slaying a dragon, created by Peter Eller. Over time, the statue was significantly damaged and was removed from the tower in 1845. During its repair, a box containing literal historical treasures was removed from it. Among others, a copper plate engraved with text about the author of the statue, banknotes and copper coins from the time of the statue's last repair, a list of city council members, and two pieces of parchment. One of them contained text written in Latin. It stated that the statue was crafted during the reign of Maria Theresa and repaired during the reign of Francis I. There was also a list of saints and their relics stored in a silver-plated box.

On the right side, right next to the gate, house number 15 is seemingly glued to Michalská veža. It is a rarity. With its width of 1.3 meters, it is likely the narrowest house in Bratislava, as well as in all of Europe. Another point of interest is the kilometer zero marker with compass points, displaying the distances to 29 European and world capitals. Furthermore, a laser beam is emitted from the southern window of the tower, indicating the route of the original Korzo promenade.

In the Middle Ages, bad deeds were punished in truly cruel ways. There were so-called cages of shame where the offender was placed. When the Bratislava cage of shame was removed and stored in the municipal depot, a pillory was erected in front of Michalská brána. The offender was hung on it with a large, heavy stone ball attached to their leg. Passersby could spit on them.

When you step out onto the balcony of Michalská brána, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the castle hill, the villa neighborhood on the hills, the historical city center, and the individual roofs and towers of Bratislava. Inside the tower is Múzeum zbraní. It is located a few kilometers west of our capital city of Bratislava. The village of Devín lies below the castle. From the castle cliff, there is a breathtaking view of the wide surroundings, the nearby Austrian borderland, and mainly the confluence of two large rivers, the Morava and the Dunaj. The castle hill excelled in its strategic position mainly thanks to the confluence of the two mentioned rivers. This was utilized by the Celts and later also by the Romans. The Roman Empire and its border reached all the way to the Dunaj river, and they built their settlement right on the castle hill. Later, the old Slavs followed up on it.

The castle hill also held a significant position during the glorious Veľká Morava. There was a defensive hillfort here. The first written mentions of the castle as such date back to 1223. However, its appearance is extremely difficult to determine, as the castle was conquered, demolished, and rebuilt several times. At the beginning of the 14th century, it underwent many changes of its owners. It became a royal castle, and to make it more comfortable for its inhabitants, it was gradually rebuilt into the Gothic style. Despite this, it did not lose its defensive military function, as it lay on the threatened Hungarian border.

In 1635, the castle came into the hands of the Pálffy family from Ardedu. During the period of their reign, the castle survived the anti-Habsburg uprising and also the uprising of František II. Rákoczi. In a later period, due to the condition of the castle, it was no longer representative to reside in it, nor did it meet the requirements of modern fortresses. For this reason, the castle became a warehouse and served for economic purposes. At the beginning of the 19th century, Bratislava and a part of Záhorie came into conflict with French Napoleonic troops. Despite the fact that they concluded a truce with them, the French blew up the castle in 1809.

Over time, Devín increasingly became a symbol of the state and a memory of Cyril and Methodius. In 1932, a purchase agreement was made between the Pálffy family and the state, and subsequently in 1935, the castle was taken over. In 1961, the castle was declared a national cultural monument.

Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika is the largest airport in Slovakia and is located in Bratislava. The village in which it is located has a rich history. It was made famous mainly by archaeological discoveries from the era of the Great Moravian Empire. The foundations of Kaštieľ v Nitrianskej Blatnici were created as early as 1569, when Ladislav Zeleméry built a curia here. In 1583, with the permission of King Rudolf, it was rebuilt into a fortified manor house with two fortified bastions, which was intended to serve as a refuge from Turkish raids. After later, mainly Renaissance and Baroque rebuilds, the manor house lost its fortress character and acquired the form of a luxurious manor residence.

After the Zeleméry family, several noble families became owners of the manor house. Let us mention at least the more prominent ones: the Dóczy, Esterházy, and Leonhardy families. It is precisely after the last owners that the manor house still bears its name today. After World War II, Leonhardovský kaštieľ served as a convalescent center for war veterans. Later, it also housed a school, a cinema, the municipal office, and the headquarters of an agricultural cooperative. Unfortunately, after 1989, gradual devastation of the manor house occurred. The current owner is gradually reconstructing it. In 2008, it received a new roof, and minor masonry work was also carried out. Despite this, the manor house is inaccessible to the public, and you can only admire it from the exterior. We believe that this national cultural monument will soon acquire a dignified appearance and will also serve the development of tourism.

In addition to the manor house, visitors can also view the extensive nearby park, which is designed in an English landscape style. It represents an undisturbed place for romantic walks and relaxation.
