Plavecký hrad

Plavecké Podhradie

Hiking enthusiasts are always thrilled by the opportunity to enjoy unique views. One such view presents itself when visiting Plavecký hrad, which currently belongs among ruins. However, you will be captivated by its grandeur and the indescribable atmosphere of this place.

You can find the castle on an outer limestone hill of the Malé Karpaty mountains, located above the Záhorská nížina lowland, directly above the village of Plavecké Podhradie. The castle is open to the public and the hike up to it is not demanding. Families with smaller children and seniors in good physical condition can handle it as well. The path leads to the castle from the village of Plavecké Podhradie. A few meters before the local manor house, past an apartment building, you will reach a tree alley. Walking through it, you can enjoy the chirping of birds and the charming scent of trees. Behind the alley is a parking lot from which you will spot a marked blue hiking trail along a forest path. After approximately 25 minutes of walking, it will lead you to your destination.

The castle was built after the Mongol invasion of our territory. The exact year is not known, but it is estimated to have been in the 1250s or 1260s. Originally, it served a guard function. It was possible to see all the way to our border with the Czech Republic from it. Thanks to oversight of the surrounding castles, Plavecký hrad could exchange signals with them in case of danger. Between 1579 and 1584, one of the first printing houses in Slovakia operated at the castle. Under the hands of the Protestant writer and church dignitary Peter Bornemisza, calendars, Bibles, a hymnal, and other printed materials were published here. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress with lower courtyards. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned since the 17th century. Conservation work is currently underway here. During its tour, you can notice the preserved outer masonry of the extensive fortification to this day, as well as a prominent cannon bastion and the masonry of the palace from the central tower. You can also admire the stone Renaissance gate.

A legend or myth is associated with almost every castle. This one is no exception. It is rumored that the castle was the setting of a story where a new Trojan War was supposed to break out. In the second legend, a woman does not dominate, but rather a man named Pavol, who became an orphan due to an unfortunate hunting accident, but the king took him under his patronage. On his deathbed, the king granted him his kingdom.

Has your imagination already started working, and would you also like to come and visit this place? Plan a trip here and discover other points of interest in the surrounding area. On the same hill, there is also a hillfort, Plavecká jaskyňa cave, and the remnants of the walls of a vanished monastery. In the village, there is an opportunity to look at a Renaissance manor house. You don't have to travel to the sea to enjoy a desert; the Slovak one is called Šranecké piesky. Popular places for summer recreation include the Buková water reservoir. Other accessible caves in Western Slovakia include the beautiful Jaskyňa Driny.

Exploring such a wonderful region is worth it for more than just one day. So that you don't have to travel back to your homes and can change the atmosphere of your domestic environment, we recommend booking accommodation near Plavecký hrad. The offer is not limited, and it is up to you whether you choose privacy-providing chaty Plavecké Podhradie cottages, or if budget-friendly ubytovanie v súkromí Plavecké Podhradie private rentals will suffice for you. We will be happy to help you.

Hrad Uhrovec

Hrad Uhrovec

Uhrovec

The ruins of the Uhrovec castle rank among the best-preserved in Slovakia. They are located on a castle hill above the village of Uhrovec. This craft town with market rights is the famous birthplace of such prominent personalities as Ľudovít Štúr and Alexander Dubček. The castle, which has guarded this charming town for centuries, stands on an outcrop of the Nitrické vrchy hills, part of the Strážovské vrchy mountain range, at an altitude of 591 m above sea level.

You can reach the castle from the village of Uhrovské Podhradie. Park your car in the former quarry above the village. From there, follow the trail to the information board. Turn right behind it. Afterwards, you have the option to choose either the steeper green trail or the more comfortable blue-marked hiking trail. Depending on which one you choose, the walk will take you 40 to 60 minutes. The total elevation gain of the trail is 276 m.

Upon reaching the top of the hill, you will find relatively well-preserved castle ruins. The layout has a triangular shape with corner bastions rising at the corners. One of them was triangular, the second was prismatic, and the third was a donjon type. The latter is a residential tower that served as the final refuge for the castle garrison during a siege. The Late Romanesque chapel with an emporium is also remarkably well-preserved and unique in Slovakia. Originally a Late Gothic palace, it underwent extensive Renaissance renovations. It fulfilled a defensive function mainly during the Turkish raids. In the 18th century, it was destroyed by fire. As the nobility preferred living in the more comfortable manor house in the village, the castle slowly fell into ruin. Today, efforts are underway for its conservation and partial reconstruction.

The origin of the castle is historically dated to the second half of the 13th century. Its construction was brought about by the wealthy Trenčín ispán (župan) Báša. However, the first written record of its existence, stating that Matúš Čák Trenčiansky exchanged land in Tekov for the Uhrovec castle, dates back to 1295. He owned the castle until his death in 1321. Subsequent owners included his successor King Charles Robert, Sigismund of Luxembourg, Stibor of Beckov, and Albert of Habsburg. In the 15th century, the castle was owned by the Pongrác family, who are associated with money counterfeiting. The last prominent noble family associated with the castle for two centuries was the Zay family.

Two legends are tied to the castle. One originates from the period of the Turkish raids. It mentions that the lady of the castle at the time mortally wounded the commander of a Turkish troop with an arrow from her bow while he was bathing in the stream below the castle. When his companions saw this, they panicked and galloped away. They were stunned by the accuracy and power of a woman's shot and imagined what would happen once the men started shooting. And what is the second legend about? You will find out from the information board during your visit to the castle.

After ascending to the castle, you have several options for how to spend your time. On hot summer days, you might enjoy a refreshing swim or fishing at the Prusy water reservoir or the Termálne kúpalisko Pažiť thermal pool near Bánovce nad Bebravou. You can enjoy a view of a sky full of mysteries at the Hvezdáreň Partizánske observatory. You also have the option to visit the reconstructed manor house in Šimonovany. The region offers many cultural attractions, but especially various thermal pools, such as the Termálne kúpalisko Malé Bielice or Termálne kúpalisko Chalmová, which are definitely worth a visit.

Tired from hiking and thermal waters, you will certainly appreciate the accommodation options offered by our providers, so book your accommodation near the Uhrovec castle. We recommend cozy Uhrovec apartments, as well as romantic cottages and cabins. Which choice you prefer is entirely up to you. You will experience unique moments everywhere.

Levický hrad

Levický hrad

Levice

Right in the centre of the town of Levice, you will find a 13th-century stone castle. Despite being in ruins, the monument is still impressive. Today, the castle grounds house the Tekovské múzeum. Come and take a look at the remains of the Gothic palace or the bastion that once served as a summer pavilion. You will learn many interesting facts about the history of the castle itself, which changed hands among some of the most famous owners and even withstood Ottoman troops.

No written records have been preserved regarding the construction of the castle that would confirm the exact year it was completed. However, the castle was built in a place of strategic importance. It was a site protected by a part of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, and the surrounding area had difficult access due to marshes. The distant views that the castle offered thanks to its location also contributed to its watchtower function. The first owner of the castle was one of the most famous landowners, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. Later, when the castle became royal property and its position grew stronger, people began to settle in its vicinity, and thus in the 14th century, the new settlement of Nové a Veľké Levice was founded.

In the 16th century, much like a large part of our country, the Levický hrad withstood Ottoman raids. During this period, a Renaissance mansion with massive fortifications was added to the castle. As the fighting by the Ottomans gained strength, at the end of the 17th century, the castle vice-captain decided to surrender the castle to the Ottomans without a fight. In less than a year, imperial troops managed to recapture the castle.

This significant military fortress also bears witness to the figure of the anti-Habsburg estate uprisings. František II. Rákoczi and his kurucs destroyed and burned down the castle before retreating from Levice at the beginning of the 18th century. The moat and the castle well were filled in, causing the castle to lose important features of a military fortress.

After those events, the castle was never restored again, it gradually fell into disrepair, and only ruins now remind us of ancient times. Visit Levický hrad and remember a piece of our history. You can also reminisce about times past while touring one of the exhibitions found in the Tekovské múzeum museum. Its unique collection boasts more than 100,000 exhibits. If you visit Levice, do not miss the Tekovská hvezdáreň observatory either, where you can explore the starry sky or learn interesting facts about space. A pleasant place to spend your leisure time taking a walk or a bike trip can be found around the Chránený areál Levické rybníky protected area. During hot days, you will appreciate a visit to the Termálne kúpalisko Margita – Ilona thermal swimming pool, where you will experience a true summer atmosphere.

Visit the Tekov region, historic Levice and discover the attractions of the surrounding area. If you are looking for accommodation near Levický hrad, we have a few tips for you. Book one of the offered family guesthouses or a cosy cottage in the surroundings and set out for new experiences.

Hradisko Zobor

Hradisko Zobor

Nitra

It is fascinating to walk alongside the several centuries old Hradisko Zobor, which is located in Nitra. This interesting attraction is the oldest and most extensive monument in the territory of the city and its surroundings. At the same time, it is also included in our list of national cultural monuments. Through the built educational trail, you will learn a lot of interesting information about it here, which will transport you to ancient times.

The origin of this unique fortification protecting the Zobor hill dates back to the late Bronze Age, namely to the period from the 10th to the 8th century BC. At that time, the peak of Zobor was an acropolis for people belonging to the higher social class. The strategic position of this hill ensured that later this place was used as a watchpoint. Visitors can enjoy that amazing view of the wide surroundings even today.

The main task of the hillfort, located on the high edge of the Carpathians above the Podunajská nížina, was the protection of the territory. At that time, it extended over a rugged area of 15 ha at an altitude of 520 – 587 m a. s. l. Entrance gates were built at three places. Currently, you can admire with your own eyes the remains of an approximately 2 km long defensive rampart, the height of which reaches up to 7 m in places.

In order to make this attraction interesting for all age groups, people from the local civic association managed to create the Historický náučný chodník Hradisko Zobor. On its almost 2 km long route, you will learn interesting information about the pyramid on Zobor, the mentioned entrance gates, or the basin serving as a water cistern. The route is not very demanding, it leads along a marked trail with 8 information boards and will take you about 45 minutes. The total elevation gain of the route is 110 m.

From the hillfort, you have excellent access to the pyramid on the Zobor hill, where you can treat yourself to a picnic after this information-packed load. If you desire to relax in the water after a hike, feel free to stop by to refresh yourself in the pools of the Kúpaliska na Sihoti – Nitra on the way back. From here, you can direct your steps to an evening performance at the Divadlo Andreja Bagara and, strengthened by a cultural experience, set off to rest in accommodation near Hradisko Zobor.

In the offer of accommodation facilities near the hillfort and its surroundings, you can choose from those that appeal to you the most. Families with children often choose apartments in Nitra as their temporary home, couples prefer a room in a hotel, and seniors mostly settle for private accommodation in Nitra. We will be happy to help you with the selection of the best accommodation.

Molpír

Molpír

Smolenice

If you find yourself in the vicinity of Smolenický zámok and you like nature, we have an excellent tip for a trip for you. Above the village of Smolenice, in the Malé Karpaty mountain range, the hill Molpír rises to a height of 354 m above sea level. Here, over an area of 14 hectares, lie the remnants of a hillfort from the Early Iron Age. Engage your children in exploration and set out with them on an easy hike combined with discovery and fun.

These ruins were first mapped and explored by the Smolenice priest Sándorfi in 1890. It is estimated that the hillfort originated approximately in the 6th century BC. This unique fortification was built from dry-stacked stone with reinforced embankments and a wooden structure. The entire area can be divided into three spaces, two outer baileys and an acropolis, which were protected by ramparts. Dwellings in the upper outer bailey and the acropolis were constructed using log building techniques, with walls plastered with clay and floors laid with flat stones. Heating was provided by simple hearths as well as domed ovens.

During its heyday, approximately 800 people lived in the hillfort. The inhabitants engaged in craft production, the manufacture of weapons and knives, casting of bronze vessels, production of stone querns, and they also produced threads and fabrics. Archaeologists found remnants of hand-carved bones with spiral decoration, numerous spindle whorls, loom weights, and ceramics at the hillfort site. An exhibition of these finds can be found in Múzeum Molpír.

The educational trail Smolenický kras, which begins near the Smolenice church, will lead you right to the hillfort. While ascending Molpír hill, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Smolenický zámok. Part of the trail includes information boards and two replicas of historical log cabins.

In the surroundings of Smolenice, there are many interesting places worth seeing. On your wanderings, definitely visit the gorgeous Smolenický zámok and discover the underground world of Jaskyňa Driny as well. After a day full of experiences, treat yourself to a rest and stay in a cozy cottage or use the services of local guesthouses. Hrad Tematín

Hrad Tematín

Lúka

In western Slovakia, in the southwestern part of Považský Inovec in the cadastral area of the village of Lúka, you can find the currently ruined Hradu Tematín. It is an ideal place for easy hiking and spending time in nature. If you head to Tematínsky hrad, you certainly won't regret it.

Let's look into the history of this castle. From documents, we find out that it was founded in the 13th century right after the invasion of Mongol troops. Its task was to guard the borders of Hungary and at the same time serve as a refuge for local residents. During its existence, it passed through the hands of several wealthy and prominent families. The Bercsényi family is one of such families, associated with the following story. Supposedly at the time when Rákoczi's uprising was supposed to arrest Mikuláš Bercsényi and occupy the castle, this plan failed for the army. Mikuláš Bercsényi devised a solution where he swapped places with his commander, and instead of capturing the commander, who was already long gone by that time, they caught the garrison captain.

The castle was finally burned down in 1710 and only a ruin has remained of it to this day. This ruin is currently a great place for walks, even though it is necessary to be careful. Entry to it is at your own risk. It doesn't matter whether you come in spring or autumn, there are no entry restrictions here. You can even symbolically support the restoration of the castle with a voluntary admission fee into the donation box.

The ascent to the castle is possible from several places. The path is not difficult, it is rather long. Expect it to take you more than an hour and a half of your time. You have the option to go along the blue trail from the local recreational resort using the tourist path, or alternatively set out through Lúčanská dolina. Also in the village of Hrádok, you can find the right direction to the castle either along the marked route or the unmarked path.

Perhaps you are a family with children and it will be interesting for you to look for accommodation near Hrade Tematín. You need to keep in mind that your smallest offspring will remain tired after such a hike and will appreciate a rest. If you are looking for options of where to go on a trip in the vicinity of the castle, check out the animals at ZOO farme New Zealand. Hrad Ostrý kameň

Hrad Ostrý kameň

Buková

In the western part of the limestone ridge of Záruby, above the village of Buková, near Smolenice, lies the ruin of Hrad Ostrý Kameň. An interesting feature is that this castle is the highest-altitude castle in the Malé Karpaty. The castle earned its name because it was carved into a rock of the same name. You will find this historical gem at an altitude of 576 meters above sea level, which guarantees magnificent views of the Malé Karpaty and the Záhorská nížina.

In the past, the castle served as a royal border fortress to protect the western border of Hungary and the so-called Czech road. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1273. Initially, the castle was royal property, but in 1366 the king donated it to Nicholas of Szécsi, passing it into private ownership. Over the centuries it belonged to many owners, including Duke Stibor of Stiborice, the Keglevich family, the Thurzo family, the Forgách family, and many others.

In 1704, a major Kuruc battle took place around the castle, during which the castle was heavily damaged. By that time, the Czech road already led through Bratislava, and the castle lost its function. The then owners of the castle, the Pálffy family, moved their seat to the town of Moravský Svätý Ján and left the castle to its fate.

Currently, the castle ruin is intertwined with the limestone bedrock, and you can view the remains of former palace walls, outbuildings, and bastions. You can reach the castle along a marked hiking trail that leads from the village of Buková. You can also make a trip for discovery from Smolenice, this route is the shortest and leads across the highest peak of the Malé Karpaty,  the Záruby peak. Along the way, you can stop at Čertov žľab or Občasný vodopád, which, however, flows only during favorable water conditions.

After a half-day hike to Hrad Ostrý Kameň, treat yourself to some relaxation and have a picnic by the nearby Vodná nádrž Buková reservoir. Among other interesting places you can visit in the immediate surroundings are definitely Smolenický zámok, the ruins of the Molpír hillfort, or Jaskyňa Driny. The Dolné Považie region is one of the most beautiful areas of Western Slovakia, so do not hesitate and book your stay today. A rich offer of accommodation near the ruin of Hrad Ostrý Kameň can be found on our page accommodation in Buková.

Hrad Čeklís

Hrad Čeklís

Bernolákovo

The sad reality of today is that the once-glorious castles on our territory have turned into ruins. These are sought after primarily by avid hikers who crave stunning views and relaxation in nature. The ruin of castle Čeklís, located on the edge of the village of Bernolákovo, is one of them. Here, you can enjoy a view of the Podunajskú nížinu plain, Bratislavu, and Bratislavský castle.

The village of Bernolákovo is one of the relatively large villages located in the Senec district. During your visit, you will certainly notice its landmark: the Roman Catholic kostol sv. Štefana Kráľa church from 1355 and the adjacent kaplnku sv. Anny chapel from 1835. On the elevated terraced hilltop known as Várdomb (Hradný vrch), the hrad Čeklís castle is situated. In written records, it is also mentioned as Ceki, Chekluez, Cheklys, or Chekles.

Getting to this castle is manageable for everyone. The hike to this publicly accessible ruin is easy and will take you less than 10 minutes on foot. Simply park your car by the church and follow the dirt path alongside it directly to your destination. From a distance, you will see the silhouette of a tower emerging from the castle, although it is not part of the original structure.

The castle was likely built in the 13th century as a guard castle. The first reference to it dates back to 1209 as the old settlement of Šebeš, the royal cellar administrator. Many owners are mentioned in the castle’s history, including Charles Robert, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and the Eszterházy family. Unfortunately, the castle fell into ruin during Rákóczi's War of Independence. In 1720, a Baroque manor house was built near the castle. Today, only a fragment of a 1.9 m thick curtain wall remains. A sharp-eyed observer may also notice a vaulted discharge arch with a span of 5 m. The castle was reportedly protected by a moat as well. The round waterworks tower, which fits into the stylized scenery, might also help draw tourists here. This was built in 1905 on the remnants of a Baroque brick cistern.

Two legends are associated with the castle. The first tells the story of the beautiful Helena of Čeklís, who intoxicated the Turkish Grand Vizier with her wine and fled to svätojurský hrad castle before the Turkish invasion. She also wanted to trick the enemy by shoeing her horses backwards. As a result, the soldiers remained confused and, in their helplessness and rage, burned the castle down. The second legend, about the candles of Čeklís, might be told to you by the locals.

You can stay in the region for a longer period to explore all the points of interest beyond the traces of history. Golf lovers and sports enthusiasts can visit the largest golf resort with 55 greens, Black River Golf Resort Bratislava. It is located directly in this village, offering a great way to diversify your daily itinerary. Anglers choose the jazero Miloslavka lake as their place of relaxation. A walk through a landscape English park also has its charm; you can experience one at Kaštieli Eberhard in Malinovo. You can go for a swim on hot days at various water areas, with the closest option being Vajnorských jazerách.

You can plan your vacation or stay however you wish. The diverse range of accommodation around hrad Čeklís will certainly surprise you. Our accommodation providers will welcome you even at the last minute and provide you with a place to stay. You can choose from beautiful wooden cabins in Bernolákovo, which are optimal for larger groups, or a comfortable room in guesthouses in Bernolákovo. Hrad Branč

Hrad Branč

Podbranč

In the village of Podbranč, in the Podzámok area, lies Hrad Branč. This castle, standing proudly on a cliff of the Myjavská pahorkatina, was once famous. Today, only ruins remain, sought after by tourists or people who love spending time in nature and history.

In the Senica district, a partially reconstructed castle stands atop Homoľov kopec above the village of Podbranč. It is situated at an altitude of 475 m above sea level, and reaching it is relatively easy. There is a small parking lot near the local cemetery where you can park your car, and after a few minutes' walk along an asphalt path, you are there. It will take no more than 10 minutes of your time. Here, a cashier awaits to let you into the castle grounds for a nominal admission fee.

When visiting this place, you can notice the oldest parts of the castle that are still standing. These are part of a two-room palace block in the courtyard of the inner castle. The castle was once divided into two main sections: the lower castle and the middle castle. These sections were separated by a deep dry moat. The entrance to the middle castle was located opposite the current monument. The middle castle had 2 functional parts: the northern courtyard and the residential palace section. From the courtyard, you could access the rooms, of which there were 40 at the time. The castle also featured two wells. In 1939, a monument was erected in its grounds to commemorate the suffering of imprisoned Protestant priests.

Legends are also associated with this castle. It is said that when Lord Pongrácz ruled the castle, he constantly plundered neighboring estates. What he stole, he sold on the meadow below the castle as if at a fair. There is also a harsher legend, according to which the robber knight Pongrácz seized the castle by force and had the former owners murdered. But as the saying goes, "What goes around comes around," and so this knight received what he had caused to the former owners. During one night, he fell into an unknown, endless passage and reportedly impaled himself on a dagger. You will like the third legend about the Black Lady. They will tell you that one right at the castle.

The castle is an interesting place. Its premises can also be used for commercial purposes, such as hosting a wedding or another event. If you are interested in exploring the beauty of this area, visit Kaštieľ v Sobotišti. Currently, the Múzeum Samuela Jurkoviča, which is dedicated to 150 years of history, is located on its premises. This well-known educator influenced the lives of many generations in Slovakia. Perfect relaxation during summer days will be ensured by the opportunity to swim or lounge on the shores of Kunovská priehrada. You can also admire natural scenery if you walk up to the lookout tower Hrajky. In case of less favorable weather, they will gladly welcome you at Plaváreň Senica.

A trip to this castle is well worth it. Likewise, staying in this region longer to enjoy it to the fullest is a great choice. In that case, we recommend booking accommodation near Hrad Branč. From our offer, you can select chalets in Podbranč, which provide their visitors with privacy, or choose beautiful rooms in guest houses. We will be happy to help you with your choice.

Hrad Skýcov

Hrad Skýcov

Skýcov

The original knight's Hrad Skýcov ranks rather among manor houses with its current architecture. It is situated in the village of Skýcov located in the Zlaté Moravce district. The fortified historical building in the Romanesque style with corner towers dates back to the late 17th century. However, the history of this mysterious place began to be written a full 200 years earlier. A Gothic stone small castle, around which the floor plan of today's building developed, probably stood here as early as the 15th century. The interior of the cultural monument is currently not accessible to the public, but the building with an atmosphere of ancient history creates a beautiful setting for a walk with the opportunity to admire the neo-Romanesque architecture.

The sprawling three-story double-tract manor house is the dominant feature of the village center. Originally a Renaissance building with an "L"-shaped floor plan, it was rebuilt into a romantic neo-Romanesque chateau in the 19th century. Its center consisted of a ceremonial hall intended for magnificent celebrations and feasts. Here, the nobility entertained themselves and feasted. The backdrop was formed by magnificent vaults stretching all the way to the top of the tower. Part of the fortified core is a number of towers, dominated by a round stone corner tower. In its time, it received a characteristic name, Nebojsa. The property was protected by a moat, across which a drawbridge led.

The manor house was burned down after World War II, and its restoration did not take place until the 1990s. In addition to the dominant corner tower, an attraction for tourists is also the picturesque decoration of facades with rustication and buttresses with a touch of romance. Will you also let yourself be invited for a romantic walk with the backdrop of a beautiful historical building? The surroundings of the manor house are easily accessible with the option of parking just a few meters from the property.

You can extend your trip into history by visiting the ruins of Hrušov castle or taking a walk to the guard Živánska veža. You can then treat yourself to a bird's-eye view of the adjacent nature by climbing the Rozhľadňa na Drieňovej observation tower, and you will surely visit the Zubria zvernica Topoľčianky bison enclosure with children. Whether you decide on accommodation in Skýcov or find accommodation in Zlaté Moravce, you will have local points of interest and attractions at your fingertips.

Dračí hrádok

Dračí hrádok

Borinka

You can find the ruins of Dračia hrádok, also known as Hadí hrad, in the Malé Karpaty mountain range, on the Úboč hill, approximately 2 km from the village of Borinka. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when the owners of the former royal Hrad Pajštún were the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok. The royal origin is also suggested by the similarity of the tower at Dračia hrádok to towers at other royal castles (Hrad Beckov, Plavecký hrad).

This slowly disappearing castle awaits you hidden above the valley of Stupavský potok, at an altitude of 370 m above sea level. There is not much information about what the small castle looked like in the past. An engraving that probably depicts its appearance can be found in Mestská galéria v Bratislave. However, experts differ in their opinions, and there are those who reject this assumption.

The area of the small castle consists of two elevated parts, a central prismatic tower, and the remains of the masonry foundation for the entrance bridge. By all accounts, the small castle perished in the 15th century during the Hussite raids into the territory of Západné Slovensko. Furthermore, it was built on geologically unstable bedrock, which was likely one of the main reasons why it was no longer restored after being damaged.

An asphalt road from the village of Borinka, which continues onto a forest path, will lead you to the remains of the castle. After roughly 800 m, you will come across a small area suitable for parking a car. The yellow-marked trail will take you directly to the ruins after a moderately challenging ascent. From the ruins of Dračia hrádok, you can continue your exploration further and reach the ruins of Pajštúnsky hrad.

If the idea of such a hike excites you, book accommodation near Dračia hrádok today. Záhorie is full of hiking as well as cultural and historical sights well worth seeing. It is entirely up to you which direction you take. An unforgettable experience will surely be a scenic boat cruise on the Dunaj or a visit to Bratislavský hrad. We believe you will enjoy your time in Záhorie and take home plenty of great experiences.

Hrad Pajštún

Hrad Pajštún

Borinka

Even near Bratislava, in the village of Borinka, you can head out into nature, where you will discover a piece of history. Direct your steps to Hrad Pajštún, which is one of the sought-after attractions of Bratislava and its surroundings mainly for tourists. You will be captivated by the views of the surrounding landscape and, in great weather, you can see all the way to the Austrian Alps.

The castle was built in 1271 as a guard castle. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt into a Renaissance-style structure, which you can notice at the entrance gate. At the castle, there are 6 stone lion heads with different facial expressions. Originally there were 9. Even though a fire struck the castle in the 18th century, the Napoleonic army brought it to its knees in 1809. Only a ruin remained, which is used today by Bratislava climbers for rock climbing.

The post office directly in Borinka is included among the starting points. We can recommend it because it is the fastest hike to the castle from the village. It will take you about 35 minutes following the red trail. The castle can also be reached from the parking lot in Stupava, in the Little Carpathians. Walking along the yellow trail, you will spend a total of 50 minutes on foot through the Pod Pajštúnom reserve, part of Obora. On the occasion of their 16th birthday, they were brought back to the castle and thus the legend about the suffering was fulfilled. Who knows what truth there is to that.

Hrad Sivý Kameň

Hrad Sivý Kameň

Podhradie (okres Prievidza)

If you love history and are drawn to the unknown, visit the village of Podhradie, near Lehota pod Vtáčnikom not far from Prievidza, and discover the remains of Hrad Sivý Kameň. It was built around 1330 by two brothers – Mikuláš and Ján – castellans from the nearby Bojnický zámok castle. As you have probably guessed, they named the castle after the color of its building material, which was based on gray stone ("sivý kameň").

The construction of the castle was necessitated by the conditions that arose after the death of the oligarch Matúš Čák Trenčiansky in 1321. Since there was no other castle in the area besides Bojnický zámok, the need arose to build another administrative center. During its existence, it belonged to many families. In 1430, it returned to the hands of King Sigismund of Luxembourg, who a year later, as a token of respect for merits in battle against the Turks, gave it to Gregor Majthényi.

The end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century was an era of disasters for this fortified residence. In 1524 it burned down, and two years later, in the Battle of Mohács, Gregor Majthényi's grandson, Bartolomej, fell into Turkish captivity. The ransom, as well as the repair of damaged parts, drained the family financially. To make matters worse, in the early 1540s the castle was plundered by the robber knights Ján and Rafael Podmanický and later by the Transylvanian prince Gabriel Bethlen.

The severely damaged fortress lost its defensive and strategic importance, and the landowners moved their estate to Nováky. Only a prison for offenders and a warehouse remained here. During the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi, when Kuruc troops fought against the Imperial forces in Horná Nitra, it was completely destroyed. The work of destruction was completed by the residents of Podhradie, who used it as building material.

A marked path will lead you to the castle hill directly from the village. The entire ascent will take you about 15 minutes at an easy pace. The modest remains of the castle now only indicate its original size. From the top of the andesite cliff, you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the entire village of Podhradie as well as Partizánske. In 1973, the castle was declared a National Cultural Monument.

The beautiful surrounding nature with its numerous rock formations provides plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling. After this easy walk, head straight to the Rybníky & GRILL recreational and relaxation area, located in the nearby village of Sebedražie. In addition to excellent grilled trout, a 30-meter-long shipwreck and a unique crayfish farm await you here.

One day will certainly not be enough to get to know the Hornonitrianske region. Therefore, book your accommodation near the ruins of Hrad Sivý Kameň right now and plan your activities in the surrounding area. Accommodation in Podhradie offers a rich selection of cottages and chalets, as well as comfortably furnished guesthouses. If you want to visit the ruins in the winter season, you can look forward to great skiing at the Cigeľ Priedavky - Šabľová ski resort.

Lednický hrad

Lednický hrad

Lednica

We invite you to the village of Lednica, above which the dominant feature of the Biele Karpaty mountains, Hrad Lednica, rises on a steep limestone cliff. In the past, Lednický hrad was among the castles with the most difficult accessibility. Today, the castle is a ruin, but extensive and intensive restoration has been taking place here since 2004, so better times are dawning for the castle. Come see the panoramic view of the Biele Karpaty and Morava and discover this place woven with history.

The first written mentions of the castle date back to 1259, but archaeological finds confirm that the cliff was inhabited as early as 2,000 years ago. The fortress was built to guard the road that led through Považie to Morava. Throughout the history of the castle, several owners took turns here. Count Marek of Lednica is mentioned among the first owners, and for a certain period, it was also owned by the powerful and feared "lord of the Váh and Tatras," Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. Other well-known owners included the Pakši family, the brothers Sobek and Matej Bielik, the Rákóczi family, the robber brothers Podmanický, as well as the Maťašovský family.

The castle consisted of three parts and was almost inaccessible. The lower outer bailey was located at the lowest level, housing defensive bastions, a prison, a room for bailiffs, a stable, a carriage room, and a blacksmith shop. The courtyard was accessed via a drawbridge and a tunnel carved into the rock.

In the courtyard of the middle castle were the main palace residential buildings for servants, utility rooms, storerooms, and the castellan's dwelling. It is assumed that during its heyday, the castle had 45 rooms and defensive towers with bastions. Perhaps the greatest attraction is the local observation post, to which a path leads up a steel ladder and stairs carved directly into the rock face.

Below the castle, you will find a spring to which a sad story is tied. On the day when the beautiful serf Katarínka was marrying the castle forester Ondrej, a boisterous celebration took place at the castle. The castle lord, a passionate count, decided that he would not accept gifts from the wedding guests, but claimed the right of the first night. The heartbroken Katarínka did not want to break her vow of fidelity and chose instead to jump from the castle window into the abyss. At the spot where she perished, a spring of water burst forth, which is named Katarínkin prameň in her honor. An interesting fact is that Jan Amos Komenský also liked to visit the spring.

Take a look at the wooden cross placed on the steep rock below the castle as well. It was erected there by the serfs as a sign of Katarínka and Ondrej's fidelity. The road from the village of Lednica and an access path leading around the spring will guide you to the castle.

After climbing to Lednický hrad, take a break and relax at the swimming pool in the nearby village of Lednické Rovne. Another great place you can visit in the area is Botanický park v Lednických Rovniach and the ruins of Vršatský hrad in Vršatské Podhradie. The region of Biele Karpaty is full of great attractions that are worth visiting. Don't hesitate and book your stay today. You can find a wide range of accommodation near the ruins of Lednický hrad castle on our page ubytovanie v Lednici.
