Galéria Nedbalka

Galéria Nedbalka

Bratislava

Galéria Nedbalka is situated in the center of Bratislava, on one of the oldest streets built on the city walls. From the outside, the building looks like an Austro-Hungarian style classicist structure, but inside you will find a small Slovak Guggenheim. Take a walk through the interesting interior of the gallery, where you will discover works by Slovak fine art greats across five floors.

Throughout the year, the gallery is open to you in the afternoon hours daily, except for Mondays. The airy circular spaces of the gallery feel very pleasant and perhaps in a way also relax the mind, allowing it to perceive the beauty of the local cultural heritage more intensely. This unique building previously served as a residential house, later being used as a restaurant or staff canteen. Minimal maintenance of the building contributed to its decay and the need for complete demolition. In 2012, the gallery building underwent its latest reconstruction, which brought it to its current form. The architects who drew up the design even won the significant Dušan Jurkovič Award, awarded by the Association of Architects of Slovakia.

The collection of works you can find in the gallery premises consists of more than 1,000 exhibits by 83 Slovak artists, predominantly from the 19th and 20th centuries. It all started with the collecting passion and vision of three philanthropists who began writing the unrepeatable story of Galéria Nedbalka. Together, they managed to build a stable institution that made a private collection of Slovak art accessible to the general public. The gallery features a permanent exhibition that guides visitors through the fine art modernism in Slovakia. It introduces its birth and formation during the period between the two World Wars, as well as the work of contemporary representatives. At its inception stood Ľudovít Fulla and Mikuláš Galanda, who through their artistic manifesto expressed a fundamental attitude toward the understanding of art and the mission of the artist himself. The group that subsequently formed precisely around Mikuláš Galanda was heavily criticized during socialist times, and even excluded from the artistic community, which was related to a ban on activities and exhibiting works. They received awards and social recognition only after 1989.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery also organizes various current exhibitions, which often have a deeper meaning in the form of charity auctions of certain works. During your tour, an excellent coffee will surely hit the spot, prepared with a smile for you in the cafe, where you can also immerse yourself in interesting literature. You can purchase a small item or a commemorative souvenir at the local Artshop. It is also possible to rent the gallery spaces for various social events, discussions, receptions, lectures, business meetings, concerts, and you can even have your wedding ceremony held here. You just need to arrange everything in advance.

When you choose to head to Western Slovakia and find yourself right in the capital, definitely do not rush home quickly. Beautiful accommodation options can also be found near Galéria Nedbalka. Guesthouses, hotels, and apartments in Bratislava will surprise you with their equipment and hospitality. The city conceals many corners worth seeing.
