ART Galéria Schürger

Tvrdošín

On Trojičné námestie square, in the beautiful Upper Orava town of Tvrdošín, you will find the ART Galéria Schrüger house of arts. Come and admire paintings by famous artists from the collections of private collectors. If you like a painting and would like to have it at home, you can purchase it directly in the gallery.

This private gallery was founded in 1990 by Juraj Schrüger. The core of the gallery was formed by his own collection. He gradually enriched it with works that he bought from artists. Other works entered the gallery thanks to consignment sales. The first vernissage took place in December 1990 in the house of the Schrüger family. The converted attic rooms featured paintings by leading Slovak artists V. Hložník, J. Alexy, J. Kollár, J. Šturdík, M. Medvecká and others. Following reconstruction in 1998, new, more dignified premises with a total area of 150 m² were opened to the public. The gallery has hosted 17 exhibitions of Slovak artists.

Come and take part in one of the vernisages, which change in theme at regular intervals. In addition to exhibition activities, the gallery also focuses on the artistic framing of paintings. The owner Juraj Schrüger himself began focusing on the creation of frames, traveling to Prague where he honed his skills under the master Viktor Brůžka. At the initiative of Dezider Milly, he later learned how to prime painting canvases. Gesso is a smooth binding layer between the base and the paint and has a decisive influence on the hardness and quality of the colors. The result of studies and numerous tests was a gesso tested by the laboratories of the National Gallery in Prague, and this unique gesso was rated as permanently colorfast. As part of a family manufacture, the gallery still produces primed canvases today, which are purchased by both domestic and foreign artists.
