Vodná nádrž Veľká Domaša

Dobrá (okres Trebišov)

Vodná nádrž Veľká Domaša is rightfully considered the green pearl of eastern Slovakia. It reaches into two districts, Vranov nad Topľou and Stropkov. It extends across the charming Ondavská vrchovina over an impressive 1,422 ha. It ranks as the 4th largest water reservoir in Slovakia. The purpose of its construction was water flow regulation, industrial use, as well as a supply of utility and drinking water. Among other things, it is a very popular and sought-after place for recreation and water sports.

The construction of the water reservoir took 6 years, from February 1962 to December 1967. The creation of Veľká Domaša led to the flooding of 6 villages. Dobrá nad Ondavou, Kelča, Petejovce, Trepec, Veľká Domaša, and Valkov. While diving, you can come across the remaining foundations, walls, and cellars of individual flooded dwellings. Churches were demolished using pyrotechnics, while rare churches in Kelča and Bžany were protected by constructing protective dykes.

The Vodné dielo Veľká Domaša water reservoir is an attractive summer destination. Located at an altitude of 162.4 m above sea level, its water reaches temperatures of up to 23 °C, ranking it among the warmest reservoirs in Slovakia. In addition to its blue-green water with self-cleaning capabilities virtually inviting you for a swim, you can also try various water sports or a cruise on a sightseeing boat.

In total, Domaša features five recreational resorts: Valkov-Tíšava, Dobrá, Poľany, Holčíkovce, and Nová Keľča. Their shores offer playgrounds, sports fields, well-maintained beaches, and dining options. One of the most popular beaches is in Nová Keľča. Anglers will also find plenty to enjoy here, as 23 species of fish thrive in Domaša. Rich catch opportunities are also provided by the adjacent Malá Domaša reservoir, which serves a balancing function.

Summer at Domaša traditionally means great entertainment, night discos, and various musical and cultural events. The regularly organized Miss Domaša event is always a big success. The tragedy occurred in November 1944 when fascist troops invaded the village to seek revenge and exact retaliation for the support given to partisans by local residents. During this violent action, 32 innocent men tragically lost their lives. Two others managed to survive the event. The fascists returned to the small village, burned it down, and scattered the surviving women and children.

Opposite the museum stands a monument dedicated to the victims who perished. Both the museum and the monument are part of the well-known Cesta vojnových hrdinov route. The exhibition is open on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM; however, the museum can also be visited outside opening hours by telephone appointment.

Lyžiarske stredisko Stropkov

Stropkov

If you visit the town of Stropkov and are a fan of skiing, the Lyžiarske stredisko Stropkov ski resort is one of your options for sports activities. The ski resort is located just a few hundred metres from the edge of town.

In the peaceful locality of Pod vlekom in the town of Stropkov, you can give your skis a full workout during the winter season. The winter skiing season is heavily influenced by the weather and lasts for a relatively short time—usually only during December and January. This is because the resort relies solely on natural snow. Children and beginner skiers in particular will enjoy the 400 m long small ski lift. Here, you can learn to ski perfectly and enjoy all the winter fun.

Unfortunately, you will look in vain for services such as equipment rental, a ski service shop, or a ski school. However, as long as you bring your own equipment, there is a good chance you will enjoy your skiing experience to the fullest. Neither the slopes nor the ski lift tend to be crowded, which is a great advantage for skiers seeking a tranquil environment.

For several years now, however, the ski resort has also been operating during the summer season. Young athletes and members of the local sports club in particular use the grass-covered and well-maintained slopes for their training sessions on special grass skis (caterpillar skis). Perhaps this style of skiing will catch on among regular visitors to the resort in the future as well.

Pleasantly tired from skiing, you can relax in the Vodný svet Aquaruthenia Svidník water park. Your little ones will certainly be captivated by a tour of the animals at Zoo park Stropkov. And if you are an admirer of naive art and want to learn more about the history of the town, be sure to include Kaštieľ v Stropkove manor house in your itinerary.

Perhaps thanks to the offer from our accommodation providers, you will experience wonderful moments full of sports activities and unforgettable memories with your family or friends. For such get-togethers, it is advisable to book accommodation near Lyžiarske stredisko Stropkov. Will you choose from the selection of cottages and chalets in Stropkov, or are you more interested in family-run guesthouses? The choice is entirely yours.

Kaštieľ v Stropkove

Kaštieľ v Stropkove

Stropkov

Almost every inhabitant of Stropkov knows where the manor house is located. However, few people know that Kaštieľ v Stropkove is also a remnant of a 15th-century castle. Come inspect this interesting place for yourself and learn about its history.

The original castle was built by the Balick family, and later taken over by the Perényi family. However, its flourishment and development were brought about by the Pethő family of Gerse, who also lived in the castle. The first written mentions are found in the donation deeds of King Sigismund of Luxembourg from 1408. The original structure was shaped like a pentagon with five corner towers. The complex contained a palace and a parish church. The castle walls were built in the 16th century as a defense against Turkish raids. In 1814, a fire broke out in a blacksmith workshop, nearly destroying the castle completely. At the end of the 18th century, the castle walls ceased to serve their defensive function, and were therefore dismantled and used by local residents as building material. Over time, only the church and the manor house remained in the open space, undergoing several structural modifications over the centuries. Probably the most valuable part of this grand building is the Renaissance knights' hall, which was preserved thanks to the last reconstruction in 2006.

You will find the Gothic-Renaissance manor house on Zámocká ulica near the church. It is currently owned by the town. Directly in front of the manor house is a small parking lot for visitors, who can visit the museum and gallery exhibitions located on the ground floor and in the attic. In the aforementioned knights' hall, there is an exhibition dedicated to the history of the town and its surroundings. The gallery in the attic presents several dozen artworks by local native and painter František Veselý. Paintings with themes of ecology and physiology are as yet undiscovered, but artistically very valuable.

Your little ones will certainly be thrilled by the doll exhibition as well, and you will fondly remember the old days of childhood. Here you will find dolls dressed in various outfits from different places all over the world. Can you imagine a geography or literature lesson in such an exhibition? You say no? Visit this unique place and see the resourcefulness of the local guides for yourself.

After touring the manor house, we recommend continuing your trip to Zoo park Stropkov. Marked by fatigue, a refreshment at Letné kúpalisko Stropkov might come in handy. And then go see the unique Drevený kostolík sv. Paraskievy in the village of Potoky. History lovers will appreciate a visit to Múzeum Tokajíckej tragédie, while admirers of traditional architecture will gladly visit Skanzen ukrajinskej dediny in Svidník.

When visiting Stropkov, we recommend using the services of our accommodation providers. Feel free to book accommodation near Kaštieľ v Stropkove and enjoy the atmosphere of this town. A wide spectrum of accommodation facilities guarantees that you will be able to choose the exact stay that suits you. For one day it can easily be a room in a guesthouse Stropkov, and for longer stays, for instance, private accommodation. Do not hesitate to choose from our offer.

ZOO Park Stropkov

ZOO Park Stropkov

Stropkov

Almost every child is thrilled if you take them to the zoo. It is a joy to watch their enthusiasm and beaming eyes as they explore domestic as well as exotic animals. If you find yourself in Stropkov, take them to the local ZOO Park. Alongside the children, their parents and grandparents will also be happy to refresh their knowledge of fauna. It is interesting to watch inquisitive monkeys, brightly colored parrots, or the mesmerizing gaze of exotic reptiles.

ZOO park Stropkov is located in the town center. Its origins date back to 1984, when parents and children began building the Stanica mladých prírodovedcov station at the Dom pionierov a mládeže. After 1990, the zoo transformed into Park zvierat n. o., established by the Mesto Stropkov. A relatively large number of animals is housed in 40 aviaries and enclosures. Even though the zoo is small, with its area and number of animals, it also fulfills an important function of saving the gene pool of our planet's animals. The grounds are complemented by plantings of various shrubs and trees that make the environment pleasant and enhance its appeal. Visitors feel very comfortable here.

The park is ideal for trips with children, who will find many fun attractions here, as well as the popular bufet Červená čiapočka snack bar. A major draw is also the petting zoo area, where children can enter the enclosure to feed or pet their favorite animals. Cute little goats or a donkey enjoy their affection and attention. Barrier-free access allows visits for mothers with strollers and physically impaired visitors reliant on a wheelchair.

Come and see the porcupine, guenons, nutria, or meerkats for yourself. Your children will be delighted by a small hedgehog and a resilient Shetland pony. The Indian peafowl and exotic parrots will charm you with their colorful plumage. From behind the glass of the terrarium, you can admire a cold python, a dangerous crocodile, and a colorful iguana. The ZOO park is open year-round seven days a week. In addition to admission fees, its operation is supported by nearly a hundred sponsors. By purchasing suitable feed at the ticket office, you too can contribute to its prosperity.

When you have admired all the beauty in the ZOO park, you can continue with your little ones to view the doll exhibition in Kaštieľ v Stropkove or, on hot summer days, visit the popular Letné kúpalisko Stropkov. Eastern Slovakia is famous for rare wooden sacred monuments. Therefore, do not miss the opportunity to see Drevený kostolík sv. Paraskievy. Hrad Šebeš

Hrad Šebeš

Podhradík

On the northwestern edge of the Slanské vrchy, which are overgrown with fragrant forest flowers, dense bushes, and massive trees, you can find an interesting place. It is the Hrad Šebeš castle, also known as Šebešský hrad. Today, only ruins remain of it. Upon closer inspection of the map, you will find that it cadastrally belongs to the territory of the village of Podhradík, located in the Prešov district.

When visiting the castle, park your car in the parking lot of the village of Podhradík directly below the castle. From this free parking lot, an educational trail will lead you directly to the castle. The route is easy and accessible on foot throughout the entire year. On 5 information panels, you can learn more about the history of the castle between 1315 and 1528, archaeological research, the restoration of the castle, stone witnesses, as well as the downfall of the castle. This educational trail is used for local history field trips by schools or by tourists who want to enjoy magnificent views of the village and its surrounding pristine nature.

The castle stands at an altitude of 529 m a.s.l. The site has been declared a national cultural monument and an archaeological site featuring a castle from the 13th century. The castle can be found on a hill above the village, the name of which recalls the location of the Podhradie fort. In the past, the castle was built on an 8 m wide and 60 m long steep spur. The attentive eye of a visitor will not miss its foundations built of stone. A circular tower once stood on the edge of the western side. In the eastern part, there was a residential palace along with a defensive wall above the entrance to the castle. There was also a ditch and a rampart fortification.

When exploring the history of this castle, historical sources mention the year 1315. In a deed of donation by King Charles Robert, the territory along with the castle was granted to Thomas's son, Knight Synko. After the demise of this family line, the castle was donated to the city of Košice. The castle permanently ceased to exist in 1550, when the inhabitants of the city of Prešov burned it down. Only ruins remained, which local residents still visit today for recreational purposes.

If you would like to explore other historical monuments of this region, you can subsequently head to Zbojnícky hrad in the village of Ruská Nová Ves. On summer days, you can refresh yourself at the Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir. In Prešov, in addition to the salt production museum in Solivar, you can look at the stars in the glowing sky at the Hvezdáreň a planetárium. A session in the Soľná jaskyňa salt cave also has excellent effects on the body. After a walk through the historical center and a visit to the Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša, you can treat yourself to an excellent cup of coffee.

Are you asking yourself how to manage it all? To avoid being under time pressure and rushing through all the attractions, we recommend booking accommodation near Hrad Šebeš. It is great to have a complete offer of accommodation facilities in the village of Podhradík within reach. You can choose from cozy cottages and chalets or affordable private accommodations in Podhradík. We will be happy to help you choose the best accommodation in Slovakia.

Spišský hrad

Spišský hrad

Spišské Podhradie

There are few cases where natural richness marries cultural heritage so seamlessly. One of them can be found in Spiš, one of the most famous and most visited regions of Slovakia. And it is not just a Slovak, but a European uniqueness. Spišský hrad. One of the largest castles in all of Europe.

Thanks to its majesty, it is impossible to miss the castle. You will see it from afar, right from the highway. Lying below it is the small town of Spišské Podhradie, which is famous for its cathedral and priestly seminary. Spišský hrad castle is situated on a local travertine hill and, with an area of over 40,000 square meters, is one of the largest in all of Europe.

The entire castle rock is even a national natural monument. And the castle itself is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

The travertine mound on which the castle stands enjoys an excellent strategic position. It stands up to 200 meters above the surrounding terrain, with the final meters being almost vertical. In the past, the travertine cliffs posed a great obstacle to enemies. The hillfort was inhabited back in ancient times by early cultures, even in the era before Christ. The period from the tenth to the thirteenth century represented a period of great development for the castle. Due to attacks by the Tatars, there was an acute need for a defensive castle. The first structure to be built was a massive, majestic tower, which was destroyed by an earthquake. In the 13th century, its successor was built, a tower that stands to this day.

During this period, there was vibrant construction activity at the castle. Paradoxically, the castle progressed despite the devastating Mongol invasions in 1241. A century later, a further expansion of the castle took place. The courtyard, measuring 150 x 60 meters, was exceptionally spacious for its time. Over time, the lower massive courtyard, which gives the castle such a large area, began to become a burden. Maintaining guards and defending such a vast area was unnecessary. Therefore, as time went on, it began to be used almost exclusively for economic and utility purposes.

The castle was ruled by the most famous royal and noble families. Worth mentioning are the Thurzo, Zápoľský, and Csák families. Over time, the castle began to fall into disrepair, playing its final role during the uprising. Imperial troops were stationed here, later abandoning the castle. The nail in the castle's coffin was a fire in 1780. The castle then decayed, lasting until 1945. It had to wait a while longer for reconstruction. Rescue and restoration works on the castle only began in 1961.

A tour of the castle offers something interesting for everyone. The castle tower, torture chamber, exhibition of period weapons, or a walk through the lower courtyard offer a wide spectrum of things to see. It would be a shame to miss the surrounding attractions, such as Katedrála sv. Martina in Spišská Kapitula or historical Levoča.

You will find the most convenient accommodation with the best access to Spišský hrad castle in Spišské Podhradie or nearby Žehra, which boasts a small church also inscribed on the UNESCO list. Your choices will primarily consist of private accommodations, but you will also find affordable and pleasant guesthouses. Discover our European-renowned gems and set out to explore the secrets of Spiš.

Vodná nádrž Zemplínska šírava

Vodná nádrž Zemplínska šírava

Kaluža - Zemplínska Šírava

The Zemplínska šírava reservoir lies in the Michalovce and Sobrance districts. It is the third largest dam in Slovakia and, together with Liptovská Mara and Oravská priehrada, belongs to the most popular holiday destinations. Thanks to long sunny summers and an average annual sunshine duration of up to 2,200 hours, it is an ideal place to spend a summer holiday in Slovakia. Moreover, the dam is accessible to the public year-round.

In summer, the water reaches a pleasant 25°C, so in addition to swimming, water sports are also popular, including paddleboats or sightseeing cruises by yacht or excursion boat. Once a year, the International Motorcyclist Rally takes place here, accompanied by a festival program. Frequent visitors to Zemplínska šírava are families with children, groups of friends, anglers, as well as seniors who come here for high-quality recreation.

On the shores of the dam, 7 tourist centers are at your disposal, offering landscaped beaches, snack bars, restaurants, and an entertaining all-day program. The largest center, Hôrka, is the hub of entertainment and nightlife. It is also popular thanks to the finest sandy and pebble beaches, a wide choice of outdoor sports (tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, streetball, minigolf, and a children's playground), and because of Hipocentrum Hôrka, which offers riding lessons and horseback rides. A yacht club is also located here, where they will gladly introduce you to the basics of this unique sport.

Among other popular centers is Kaluža, which boasts the popular Thermal Šírava water park. In Medvedia hora, a unique experience awaits you. When you submerge under the surface of the former quarry, you will swim up to a building that was once part of the complex. It is no longer in use today, but in the quarry's waters you will find an interesting underwater world. Biela hora, Kamenec, Paľkov, and of course Klokočov are also well worth a visit. You can find a diverse range of accommodation options in these centers on our portal.

The surroundings of the Zemplínska šírava reservoir are also sought after by hikers and cyclists. Numerous hikes in the Vihorlatské vrchy mountains are a major draw. Views of the entire surrounding area are offered by the Vihorlat peak as well as the slightly lower Sninský kameň. The popular Morské oko lake also offers magnificent sights. This easy walk around the lake is suitable even for smaller children. During your stay at Zemplínska šírava, we recommend visiting the nearby Vinianske jazero lake and the ancient Viniansky hrad.

An advantage of staying near the Zemplínska šírava reservoir is also the easy access to surrounding towns. In addition to relaxing by the water, you can diversify your stay by visiting the town of Michalovce, where we recommend visiting the Hvezdáreň observatory, or take a trip to the Skanzen Humenné open-air museum.

To catch all the interesting attractions, we recommend booking a stay of at least a week. Book suitable accommodation near the Zemplínska šírava reservoir directly on our website, where you will also find inspiration for trips in the surroundings.

Splav Dunajca na pltiach

Splav Dunajca na pltiach

Červený Kláštor

Dunajec is a river creating a 17 km long border line between Slovakia and Poland. It drains its waters from Slovakia all the way to the Baltic Sea. It is a typically mountain river that has a variable flow and ranks among the cleanest rivers in Central Europe.

It was already an important transport hub in the past. In the 2nd century, Greek and Roman merchants traveled along it to the Baltic in search of amber. Later, the Germans and Slavs used it to transport goods and people to the Baltic Sea and the Vistula region. This road lining the Dunajec is called the Soľná cesta (Salt Road) and was reconstructed between 1908 and 1917. In the famous Prielom Dunajca gorge, the river has carved a canyon through limestone crags. It is a protected nature reserve covering an area of 360 ha, which is a floristically and landscape-aesthetically very significant area.

Rafting on the Dunajec on wooden rafts is a tourist attraction that has been very popular for years. On the Polish side, it starts in the village of Sromowce Wyżne and ends in the village of Krościenko nad Dunajcem. On the Slovak side, the raft trip starts in the village of Majere or Červený Kláštor and ends in the village of Lesnica.

Rafting on the Dunajec from Červený Kláštor to the state border near Lesnica on wooden rafts takes from 90 to 120 minutes. The attraction operates only from April to October. It is a 10 km long route that offers you a cross-section of beautiful natural scenery during the float. You can observe the calm as well as more or less rippling waters of the Dunajec, rock overhangs, and the beauty of Pieniny nature. Before entering the Pieniny canyon, you will be welcomed by Tri koruny, the symbol of Pieniny. During the float, you will find yourself next to a rock wall tens of meters high, which is shrouded in ancient local legends. You will learn about petrified womanizing monks who used to visit a Polish nun, as well as about Juraj Jánošík crossing the Dunajec while being chased by gendarmes.

The return trip to Červený Kláštor is possible by shuttle transport, but we recommend that you use the educational trail route instead. You can complete it on foot within 2 hours or by bicycle, which will take you about half the time. On the trail, there are 10 educational boards with information about the Pieniny fauna and flora.

The raft trip is remarkable and you will learn a lot of interesting things during it. Whether directly from the surrounding nature or from the raft guides' storytelling. It definitely ranks among the trips you should take. Book accommodation near the Dunajec rafting, for example on the village page accommodation Červený Kláštor, plan at least a long weekend here, and visit other surrounding attractions. Trust us, such an experience will delight children, adults, and our seniors, and you will remember it for a long time.

In front of the cave, there are additional information panels full of engaging facts focused directly on Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa.

The first explorers entered its depths in 1870, and just a year later it was opened to the public. It thus became one of the earliest opened caves in the world. Definitive electric lighting was installed in the cave in 1887. An interesting fact is that public ice skating was permitted here for a certain period.

The length of the route accessible to tourists is 515 meters of icy magnificence. A half-hour tour will show you the most precious, permanently glaciated parts of the cave, mainly Veľká sieň and Malá sieň. Prepare yourself for a considerable temperature shock; in the coldest parts of the cave, it can drop to -4 °C. So do not forget to bring warm clothing.

In the cave, you will admire not only floor ice, but also ice pillars and icefalls. Be assured that the ice in the cave has accumulated over centuries. The proof is its maximum thickness of more than 26 meters.

The surroundings of Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa are full of points of interest; the beautiful nature of Slovenský raj speaks for itself. Rysy

Rysy

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Rysy, consisting of three peaks, are among the most popular hiking destinations for tourists in Slovakia. They form the main ridge of the Vysoké Tatry and are located on the border of the Slovak and Polish republic. The starting point is the village of Štrbské Pleso.

This is a more demanding ascent, suitable rather for moderately advanced or experienced hikers. The hike begins at an altitude of 1,347 m a. s. l. by the lake Štrbské pleso and ends at an altitude of 2,499 m a. s. l. The significant elevation gain and the length of the hike itself (approx. 8 hours round trip) are demanding in terms of time and physical condition, but the reward is wonderful views from the summit. You will even enjoy as many as 3 peaksfirst the southeastern and main one, and finally through steep serpentines the viewpoint peak of Rysov.

During the nearly 10 km route, you will encounter other interesting places and views. First, you will have the opportunity to compare Štrbské and Popradské pleso. Further on, the trail stretches through Mengusovskou dolinou, above Veľké Žabie pleso. You will experience adrenaline when overcoming a traverse with the help of chains. Precisely because of this passage, ascending Rysy is not recommended during black ice or summer snow, as the section is extremely dangerous. After a demanding journey, you will appreciate rest and refreshment at Chate pod Rysmi, the highest-situated mountain chalet. From there, the final steep section awaits you all the way up to Rysy itself.

Rysy were first conquered in 1840 by the visitor Eduard Blasy, and today around 25,000 tourists complete this route annually. One must prepare appropriately for the ascent and count on a full day. Therefore, it is best to find accommodation in the Vysoké Tatry. You can find inspiration for accommodation near Rysov in a chalet, apartment, guesthouse, or hotel on our website.

Gerlachovský štít

Gerlachovský štít

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Gerlachovský štít is among the greatest landmarks of the High Tatras. This is not only due to its altitude of 2,655 m a.s.l., which makes it the highest peak in Slovakia, but also thanks to its unmistakable appearance, untouched nature, and hiking possibilities. However, if you also want to be among the lucky ones who have conquered this majestic peak, keep in mind that ascent is only possible accompanied by a mountain guide.

In the past, back in the 18th century, Kriváň, another inimitable Tatra giant, was determined as the highest peak based on elevation measurements. In the 19th century, however, Ľudovít Greiner determined Gerlachovský štít to be the highest peak of the High Tatras, and it holds its primacy to this day. It is part of the peaks that form the famous Gerlachovský kotol basin. The ascent by Ján Still and his companions in 1834 is considered the first known ascent of Gerlach. The first reliably documented ascent was completed by Viennese military mappers in 1868.

The most popular ascent route leads from Sliezsky dom via Velická próba, with a descent via Batizovská próba. However, Martinova cesta is considered by hikers to be the most attractive route, starting either from Litvorové sedlo or Poľské hrebeň and subsequently by abseiling from Velický štít. No matter how you reach the summit, your reward will be breathtaking views of almost all surrounding mountain ranges and Tatra peaks. Malá Fatra and Veľká Fatra, Nízke Tatry, Kozie chrbty, Slovenský raj, and many others will be in the palm of your hand. Under favorable weather conditions, you will even see Kékes in Hungary, Lysá hora in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids in neighboring Czechia, as well as many Polish and Ukrainian peaks.

Do you know the famous observatories at Skalnaté pleso and Lomnický štít? Originally, it was considered that one of them would be located right on Gerlach, after its construction on Slavkovský štít was rejected. And that is just one of the interesting facts, Gerlachovský štít hides many more. However, the mountain guides, for whom this Tatra majesty has become a second home, will tell you the most about them.

A hike to Gerlach needs to be properly planned. We suggest starting by finding suitable accommodation near Gerlachovský štít, which you can find right on our website. The ascent of Gerlachovský štít is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; we wish you plenty of strength and a safe return home in good health.

Materials for its construction were carried to Skalnaté pleso on horses and from there by porters to the top of the peak. A large assembly cable was carried up by as many as 36 people. It is truly an admirable feat.

With its height of 2,634 meters above sea level, Lomnický štít will win over all of its visitors. Individual accommodation options near Lomnický štít can be found on our portal. Book today and set off for a unique view.

Národný park Poloniny

Národný park Poloniny

Stakčín

In the Snina District in Eastern Slovakia lies Národný park Poloniny. It borders Bieszczadzki Park Narodowy in Poland and Užanskyj nacionaľnyj pryrodnyj park in Ukraine. These three countries are connected by Kremenec, which at an altitude of 1,210 m above sea level is also the highest point of Národný park Poloniny. The national park covers an area of 29,805 ha, with a buffer zone spanning 10,973 ha. Forests make up as much as 81% of the national park's area.

The area was declared a national park on October 1, 1997. The park received its name thanks to the phenomenon of poloniny. These are flower-rich mountain meadows located above the timberline.

The national park is unique mainly because it hosts the only population of European bison in Slovakia. The national park also falls under the NATURA 2000 network through two types of areas: Special Protection Areas (Bukovské vrchy) and Sites of Community Importance (Bukovské vrchy, Stinská, Ulička).

Climatically, all zones are represented in Národný park Poloniny: warm, moderately warm, and cold. As a result, the national park features a diverse representation of fauna and flora. Average air temperatures range between 4 and 8 °C. The average annual precipitation is 800 to 1,000 mm. Snow cover remains on the ground between November and April, lasting an average of 160 days a year on the ridges.

You can only see wild European bison in Poloniny

The fauna of Národný park Poloniny reflects its location on the boundary between the Western and Eastern Carpathians. The region can be characterized as Palearctic, covered by mixed and deciduous trees. As a point of interest, nearly 6,000 different species of invertebrates and 320 species of vertebrates have been identified in the territory to date. It is home to 403 species of spiders (very rare ones include Araeoncus crassiceps and Collinsia inerrans) and 819 species of butterflies (notable ones include the artichoke moth and the black-veined white). Watercourses have retained a rich representation of mayflies, and you can also find a rare endemic amphipod (Gammarus). Various valuable species of beetles, dipterans, and birds are present here. The national park is a Special Protection Area where nightjars, hazel grouse, corn crakes, lesser spotted eagles, white-backed woodpeckers, and Ural owls nest. Among other rare or endangered species, the Eurasian wolf, brown bear, wildcat, Eurasian otter, Eurasian lynx, and European bison have found refuge here.

It is precisely thanks to the European bison that Národný park Poloniny is a very significant area. In Slovakia, Poloniny is the sole remaining home of Europe's largest wild land mammal. In 2004, the project "Establishment of a Free-Ranging European Bison Population in the Slovak Carpathians" was developed to create and maintain a stable European bison population in Slovakia. Currently, two bison herds live in the national park. Despite many negatives that bison bring to the area, there are also positive aspects—most notably, bison make the area more attractive for tourism and help maintain the current state of the national park's habitat.

The flora of Národný park Poloniny is diverse and forms an imaginary botanical garden on the border of the Western and Eastern Carpathian mountain systems. Currently, more than 1,000 species of vascular plants are identified, many of which are endangered or rare. To illustrate the area's diversity, there are more than 300 species of bryophytes, over 100 species of lichens, and 300 species of fungi. Forest vegetation is the most abundant, with European beech as the dominant species. The lowest elevations of the park are characterized by oak-hornbeam forests, transitioning into beech forests and subsequently silver firs. The highest elevations feature beech forests, occasionally mixed with maples. Rare and highly valuable tree communities can be found in every forest stand. The banks of mountain streams are characterized by willows, grey alder communities, and ferns. Non-forest communities consist of springs, fens, peat bogs, meadows, pastures, and mountain meadows (poloniny). A characteristic feature of these mountain meadows above the timberline is the occurrence of East Carpathian plant species.

Enjoy the Perseids in Park tmavej oblohy

There are 7 national nature reserves, 14 nature reserves, and 1 natural monument in the national park. Every single one of these places is special. Park tmavej oblohy, crossed by the 49th parallel, attracts significant interest from tourists. On December 3, 2010, it was declared Slovakia's first dark-sky park. The park's goal is to inform the public, educate on issues regarding the protection of the nocturnal environment, and, last but not least, protect this environment. The area is also unique for hosting the highest number of endemic and endangered flora and fauna species. This is attributed to the fact that, thanks to low light pollution and a truly natural night sky, their nocturnal biorhythm is disrupted the least. Tourists and photographers head to this place with a clear goal: to observe the Milky Way with the naked eye along with thousands of stars. By comparison, while you can see several thousand stars here with the naked eye, that number drops to hundreds in cities and to just dozens in major metropolises. True romance under the stars, wouldn't you say? Under suitable conditions, you can even observe counterglow, the gegenschein band, or zodiacal light.

Treat yourself to quality hiking and unique cycling tours

Tourists will appreciate the large number of attractive routes, even though the history of tourism itself here does not have a long tradition. The first documented hike took place only in 1839. Today, marked hiking trails of various difficulty levels run through the national park. The red-marked trail will guide you along the ridge of the Poloniny Carpathians. Yellow-marked trails lead through the Hlboký potok valley and Tri studničky. The Nová Sedlica – Čierťaž trail and the Runina – Komúrny trail follow green markers. The Ruská cesta trail and Chodník ikon follow blue markers. In addition to these, there are two hiking border crossings with neighboring Poland in Poloniny. If you are looking for adventure, you can also enjoy a great camping trip at several locations. Cycle routes are also popular, and even the Karpatská cyklomagistrála marked in red passes through the area. Various educational trails and locations tell their own stories. These include Beskydský panteón, a symbolic cemetery of famous personalities from beneath Poloniny, wooden sculptures located in the old park in Ulič, the Arpádova línia, or Starina with its natural, historical, and cultural points of interest.

Come and explore the beautiful hidden corners of picturesque nature that you won't find anywhere else. Book accommodation near Národný park Poloniny, for example on pages for accommodation in Snina District, accommodation in Stakčín, accommodation in Prešov Region, or accommodation in Bukovské vrchy, and enjoy a great stay. Don't forget to pack everything you need in your backpack. You never know what might change during your stay if you decide to extend it or take additional trips. We wouldn't be surprised at all; Poloniny is truly magnificent.

Prielom Hornádu

Prielom Hornádu

Smižany

Prielom Hornádu is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Národný park Slovenský raj. It is located in the Košický kraj region in the Spišská Nová Ves district. The route is interwoven with numerous ladders, bridges, footbridges, and chains, so do not forget to wear sturdy footwear. If you are at least a slightly fit hiker, the adventure can begin.

Starting points for you can be the villages of Smižany, Čingov, Spišské Tomášovce, Hrabušice, Letanovce, or Podlesok. In 1964, Prielom Hornádu was declared a National Nature Reserve, and rightly so. The trail is 16 km long and here you will find exceptional fauna and flora, natural scenery, and geomorphological phenomena. Information boards are available to you. Kaňon Hornádu is in some places only a few meters wide. However, the elevation gain you tackle here is over 300 meters. Truly an adrenaline-pumping attraction.

Definitely do not bring very young children here and do not come if you are afraid of heights. On the contrary, if you have courage and good physical condition, Prielom Hornádu is the right choice for a trip for you. If you set off from the village of Podlesok, you will come across several benches for resting or a spring with drinking water. The hiking trail will lead you through diverse sections with beautiful waterfalls. Perhaps the most beautiful is Obrovský vodopád, which reaches a height of up to 60 meters.

Prielom Hornádu is accessible all year round. In winter, however, the water freezes in some places. The ladders and footbridges are slippery, so you need to be careful during the ascent. In the summer months, boating on the Hornád river is popular. However, you can only navigate in small watercraft. Rafting is not permitted. Do not forget to register on the website of Národný park Slovenský raj.

If you are planning to visit Slovenský raj, it is not only the Hornád gorge that will be a great attraction for you. We also recommend visiting Kláštorská roklina, which is rich in breathtaking waterfalls, or Tomášovský výhľad, from whose heights you can see far and wide.

The nature of Národný park Slovenský raj is unforgettable, and it is certainly worth coming here for a holiday. You will find ideal accommodation near Prielom Hornádu with us. You can also choose from a wide range of accommodation in Slovenský raj. You will remember the hiking you experience here for a long time to come.

Monkova dolina

Monkova dolina

Ždiar

If you are not afraid of a more demanding hike and like to learn something along the way, we will direct you to Ždiar and from there to Monkova dolina, where you can walk an interesting educational trail.

The 5 km long Monkova dolina is situated in the northern part of Belianske Tatry. At the head of this glacier-origin valley rise the peaks Hlúpy and Ždiarska vidla. The valley was named after the once widespread Ždiar surname Monka, although it is not known what relationship the Monka family had to it, whether they were the owners or leased it.

An educational trail leads through Monkova dolina, which is very beautiful, but at the same time demanding. On the more than 8 km long route with 6 stops, you need to expect a steep climb and a large elevation gain (945 m). The trail will guide you from Ždiar across the confluence of the Biela stream and Rígeľský potok, then through Monkova dolina, via Široké sedlo all the way to Kopské sedlo. Along the way, views await you not only of Belianske Tatry, but from Široké sedlo also of Vysoké Tatry. In addition to views of blooming meadows, you might also get the chance to spot chamois. The trail is accessible only from mid-June to the end of October. At the beginning of the route at the mouth of Monkova dolina, an entrance fee must be paid. Completing the trail takes about 4 to 5 hours.

Monkova dolina is not the only place you can head to from Ždiar. Plan a trip to Belasé pleso, or visit Bachledova dolina with Chodník korunami stromov. If you are interested in folk architecture, visit Ľudové múzeum - Ždiarsky dom; for children, Family Park Strachankovo or Svetelný dóm will be a great experience. In Belianske Tatry, discover Belianska jaskyňa as well. And you can enjoy winter on the slopes of resorts directly in Ždiar – Strednica, Krasuľa, Strachan, or Monkova dolina.

For all of this, you will need pleasant accommodation, and there is certainly no shortage of it here. The most common type of accommodation in Ždiar are chalets and traditional wooden houses, which will provide you with complete privacy and very good amenities, making you feel right at home. Practically equipped and well-located are apartments, which can often be found, for example, near ski slopes. Guesthouses also offer very good services, often featuring their own restaurant or even a wellness area. Monkova dolina is already looking forward to you conquering it. Rent comfortable accommodation in Ždiar and set off on an educational hike.

Vodopád Skok

Vodopád Skok

Vysoké Tatry mesto

The majestic Vodopád Skok is located in the Vysoké Tatry mountains in the Mlynická valley. It is frequently visited by tourists and easily accessible even for families with children. You can visit it year-round, but it is nevertheless most beautiful and massive when the ice melts.

Vodopád Skok lies at an altitude of 1,789 meters above sea level and its height is 30 meters. Its water source is Pleso nad Skokom, located above it. The view of the waterfall leaves no one indifferent, and thanks to the surrounding peaks, you will stand before it open-mouthed. This watercourse is indeed a magnificent sight to behold.

To Vodopád Skok, it is literally just a stone's throw away (a hop away). Which is great, especially for seniors and families with children. This easy Tatras hike will take you approximately 1.5 to 2 hours on the way there. And even children from about 4 years old can handle it, with the right motivation, of course.

Start your hike at Štrbské Pleso. Here you will also find a parking lot for your car, or you can take the rack railway train here from the village of Štrba. Štrbské Pleso is a tourist starting point for many hikes. Find the yellow trail marker and set off along it. The route begins with an asphalt road into Mlynická dolina. Here you will be treated to a beautiful view of the western peaks of the Vysoké Tatry: Soliská, Štrbský štít, and Patria. You will pass by ski jumping ramps and then continue along a paved and later stony path through dwarf pine to the waterfall.

Vodopád Skok will charm both young and adult hikers. The older ones can continue to Pleso nad Skokom, to which the trail continues. However, part of the route here goes over rocks, and you need to hold on to chains. Therefore, if you are afraid of heights, stay to admire Vodopád Skok from below. The walls of the Tatras rocks near the waterfall also provide space for rock climbers. In winter, ski touring enthusiasts like to come here instead.

A trip to the waterfall is a great experience. If you decide to stay for a holiday in the Vysoké Tatry, you will not regret it. Accommodation near Vodopád Skok as well as accommodation at Štrbské Pleso can be found on our portal. Various types of facilities are available: private cottages, chalets for rent, comfortable apartments, guesthouses, and large hotels with wellness services for the demanding. Choose today. The Vysoké Tatry are made for tourists.

Tomášovský výhľad

Tomášovský výhľad

Spišské Tomášovce

Tomášovský výhľad is located on the southern slope of Ludmanka, at an altitude of 667 m above sea level, in Slovenský raj. It is an impressive rock outcrop of a terraced shape with an overhang high above the Hornád river. From the top, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Prielom Hornádu, Čertova Sihoť, the valley of Biely potok, as well as the Vysoké Tatry mountains. The ascent to it is not overly demanding, but the reward in the form of the most beautiful view in the Slovenský raj region is well deserved.

A group of climbers from Spišská Nová Ves, consisting of Brnčal, Huba, and Leschinský, was the first to conquer the wall of Tomášovský výhľad on October 8, 1938. Since then, the spot has been swarming with tourists, as everyone wants to enjoy this unforgettable view at least once. If you manage to arrive at a time when you are alone at the viewpoint, enjoy the unique atmosphere of the place. It is just you with your thoughts, a deep abyss below you, wild nature all around, silence, and a special sense of peace.

The limestone massif of Tomášovský výhľad has long been used as a climbing training ground, so you may notice steel pitons at the top. Currently, there are around 100 known climbing routes of various difficulty levels that can be used to conquer the steep wall. Rock climbing competitions are also held here. Directly below the rock terrace lies the lesser-known Michalova džura cave.

The starting point for the hike is the parking lot in the village of Čingov. From there, you will follow the yellow hiking trail, which will lead you past the Pomník Slovenského raja monument and a chalet settlement all the way to the top. You will overcome a certain incline and in about an hour (or even less via some routes), you will arrive at the spot. The entire route is 3.5 km long with an elevation gain of 235 m. It is not uncommon to pass families with young children or groups of seniors during the hike. Another option is to arrive from Spišské Tomášovce along the green hiking trail, which is considered the easiest route. Interesting routes also lead from Smižany, Ďurkovec, and Spišská Nová Ves. Cyclists will also appreciate the marked yellow MTB cycling route leading from the village of Spišské Tomášovce. Anyone with enough stamina should try the loop trail through Prielom Hornádu, which is among the most attractive routes.

Living in Slovakia and not seeing Tomášovský výhľad is like being Slovak and never tasting bryndzové halušky (sheep cheese dumplings). You might hesitate at first, but then you cannot get enough. Slovenský raj and its surroundings are a lifelong passion, where tourists come to find inner peace and draw the purest energy from nature. Book a stay in the vicinity of Tomášovský výhľad, for example on the accommodation Čingov or accommodation Spišské Tomášovce pages, and enjoy perfect views of our beautiful Mother Nature.

Dóm svätej Alžbety

Dóm svätej Alžbety

Košice

Dóm svätej Alžbety is an impressive structure that represents the city of Košice. This church is preeminent not only because it is the largest in Slovakia, but certainly also one of the most beautiful. Many a tourist, young or old, gazes at the Gothic cathedral in silent awe.

Dóm svätej Alžbety is a Roman Catholic church and serves as the parish church of the Farnosť svätej Alžbety in Košice. You will find it on Hlavná ulica in Slovakia's second-largest city, right in the old town of Košice. Its area covers a respectable 1,200 m². Construction of the cathedral began at the end of the 14th century and was completed at the beginning of the 15th century.

The church is dedicated to St. Elizabeth as the patron saint of the city of Košice. However, the original church that stood on this site, mentioned as early as the 11th century, was dedicated to St. Michael. It was rededicated to Elizabeth only after German settlement in Košice. Following the church's first fire in 1380, the decision was made to build a magnificent cathedral worthy of the medieval city at that time. The church is built in the Gothic style, but elements of the original Romanesque style can also be found here.

The medieval merchants and craftsmen of Košice not only contributed to the construction but also donated to it financially on a regular basis. The cathedral was built with the support of the ruler of the time, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and the Papal Curia. Over the centuries, it underwent several restorations due to war and fires. Today, Dóm svätej Alžbety has an outer length of 60 meters and a width of 36 meters. The main tower, also nicknamed Žigmundova veža, measures more than 59 meters. The tower houses bells and the mechanism of the large church clock.

Inside Dóm svätej Alžbety, you will find several altars. However, the most beautiful and precious one is unequivocally the main altar of St. Elizabeth. It is the only surviving medieval altar with two pairs of wings and a triple composition cycle of Gothic paintings, totaling 48 panel paintings. The church earned another "first" with its double spiral staircase, which is the oldest surviving one in Europe. It is assumed to have had a purely decorative character, as it is very narrow.

Dóm svätej Alžbety is open to the public. Masses are held here in Slovak and Hungarian, as well as in Latin. Guided tours of certain parts of the church, such as Žigmundova veža, Kaplnka svätého Michala, or Rákociho krypta, are available for a fee. Visiting the church when a concert by the Štátna filharmónia Košice or the Medzinárodný orgánový festival occasionally takes place is a truly unique experience.

In addition to its magnificent cathedral, Košice attracts visitors with other sights. We have prepared tips for trips in Košice on our portal. You will see for yourself that it is worth staying here longer. We offer accommodation in the center of Košice and accommodation near Dóm svätej Alžbety on our website. Whether you choose to spend your vacation in a luxury hotel or a comfortable apartment, you will surely find your pick with us.

Tatras Tower

Tatras Tower

Vysoké Tatry mesto

The Tatras Tower observation tower at Štrbské Pleso represents one of the most modern and highest structures of its kind in Central Europe, offering visitors unique contact with the high-mountain environment.

The attraction is located in the Štrbské Pleso area, in the village of Štrba, in the Poprad district, at an altitude of approximately 1,350 meters. The tower reaches a height of 53 meters, and its spiral path with a gentle incline ensures comfortable and barrier-free access all the way to the very top. During the ascent, visitors pass by educational boards that introduce the fauna, flora, and history of the Tatry mountains, thus the tower also fulfills an educational function. The main attraction is an adrenaline-inducing walking net at a height of almost 50 meters above the ground and a glass floor that offers a view directly beneath the visitors' feet. For thrill-seekers, the longest and highest-situated dry slide in Slovakia is available, which can be used to shorten the way down. The tower's structure is designed to withstand demanding high-mountain conditions while sensitively complementing the surrounding sports infrastructure near the ski jumps. A visit to the tower is possible all year round, while every sunset or temperature inversion in the valleys gives the view an unmistakable atmosphere.

What can you find here?

In the tower complex, you will find a spiral observation path, an adrenaline net, a glass observation platform, and a sixty-one-meter-long dry slide. Interactive educational stations, a souvenir shop, and modern technical facilities, including restrooms, are available. In the immediate vicinity, there are parking lots and starting points for hiking trails around the Areál snov area.

Who is this place suitable for?

The location is ideal for families with children who will appreciate the fun elements and a safe route to the top, as well as for seniors and persons with limited mobility due to the barrier-free access. It is also sought after by landscape photographers and adrenaline lovers who want to try walking on a net above the abyss. Due to the open character of the structure, warmer clothing is recommended even during the summer months, as it can be windy at the top.

What can you visit in the surrounding area?

Just a few minutes of walking separate the tower from the iconic Štrbské pleso lake, which is ideal for walks or boating. You can also visit the Symbolický cintorín (Symbolic Cemetery) at Popradské pleso lake or set off on a hike to the Vodopád Skok (Skok Waterfall) in the Mlynická dolina valley. For families, the Veveričí lanový park (Squirrel Rope Park) or playgrounds in the area under the ski jumps are within accessible distance.

Pieninský národný park

Pieninský národný park

Červený Kláštor

Pieninský národný park can be found in the far north of Slovakia, east of the Vysoké Tatry mountains on the border with Poland. It is located in the districts of Stará Ľubovňa and Kežmarok in the Prešovský kraj region. This smallest Slovak national park covers an area of only 37.5 km². The Pieniny are a beautiful location and, together with the Dunajec river that flows through them, create an unmistakable natural scenery.

Creation of the smallest national park in Slovakia

Pieninský národný park had to wait a long time for its role as a national park. A lot of timber was harvested in the forests here, especially on the Polish side, and the land mostly belonged to private owners. The first historical references point to an interest in creating a protected area in Pieniny in Poland in 1921.

Delimiting the territory was heavily influenced by negotiations between former Czechoslovakia and representatives of Poland in 1925 in Zakopane. Both countries agreed on the principles of the Pieniny border park. The purchasing of land from owners and the setting of the national park's boundaries began. However, this was slowed down by the war and the country's economic situation.

In 1932, at least the Slovenská prírodná rezervácia Pieniny was declared in Červený Kláštor, and Oldřich Lacina became its first administrator. The reserve was under the administration of Štátne lesy in Liptovský Hrádok. Only after World War II did territorial plans, maps, and research into local fauna and flora begin again. In 1957, the Pieninská prírodná rezervácia Červený Kláštor was established, and in 1960, the Náučný chodník Prielom Dunajca educational trail was opened to the public, which was the very first educational trail in Slovakia.

It was not until 10 years later, in 1967, that Pieninský národný park (abbreviated as PIENAP) was established. Today, it falls under the Štátna ochrana prírody headquartered in Banská Bystrica. They say that good things come in small packages, and in this case, it holds perfectly true. Pieninský národný park, with a buffer zone area of just 22,444 hectares, earned its recognition in the end. And even though it is small, it really has a lot to offer.

Parts of Pieninský národný park and their attractions

It is divided into three parts: the western Czorsztynske Pieniny, Malé Pieniny in the eastern part, and Pieninky in the central part. The highest peak is considered to be Tri Koruny at an altitude of 982 m above sea level, whose five rocky summits really look like a royal crown. Other popular ridges among hikers are Sokolica (747 m a.s.l.), Holica (824 m a.s.l.), and Kláštorná hora (654 m a.s.l.).

There are three protected natural reserves located in Pieninský národný park. Probably the most significant is Štátna prírodná rezervácia Pieniny, Prielom Dunajca. This area is particularly attractive for its rocky sections and natural phenomena created by the Dunajec river. Many water sports fans come here for rafting. You can try white-water rafting or wooden raft rides down the Dunajec. And perhaps you will spot a black stork or glimpse an Eurasian otter swimming on the water surface.

In addition to rafting down the Dunajec, a hiking trail with educational boards leads through the gorge. The trail begins in the village of Červený Kláštor and leads all the way to the Polish spa town of Szczawnica. Along the way, you can observe Jánošíkov skok, where the Dunajec narrows and reaches a depth of up to 12 meters. You will also discover the Storočná voda spring, from which, if you drink, you will reportedly live to be 100 years old.

Another protected natural formation of the Pieniny national park is Haligovské skaly. It is a magnificent complex of limestone rocks containing holes, cavities, and caves. The most famous karst cave among them is Aksamitka, which is unfortunately closed to the public. However, you can reach Haligovské skaly via a hiking route, for example from the village of Haligovce.

The last protected reserve of Pieninský národný park is Prielom Lesníckeho potoka. The Lesnícky potok stream flows from the right side of the Dunajec and has formed steep rock walls of Kača, Bystrík, Biela skala, and Osobitá skala. You can reach this natural formation via a hiking trail from the village of Lesnica, or by boat or raft.

The Pieniny region is undoubtedly a great choice for spending an active vacation. It is an ideal place for hikers, as well as for families with children. Some hiking trails are adapted for young visitors. Furthermore, the surroundings of Pieniny offer other attractions that are well worth visiting. And we have prepared a selection of accommodation in Pieninský národný park for you. Choose from a wide range of cottages, apartments, or family guesthouses. Book today so you don't miss out on your stay in the beautiful nature of the Pieniny national park.

It is located within the territories of the Brezno, Poprad, Spišská Nová Ves, and Rožňava districts. The territory of Slovenský raj is a true paradise for hikers. Waterfalls, canyons, rocks, and breathtaking views—this is how our most visited national park could also be characterized.

NP Slovenský raj is a paradise for both animals and tourists

Slovenský raj was declared a national park in 1988. There are 11 national nature reserves and 8 nature reserves here. The park's territory lies in the north of the Slovenský Rudohorie mountains. Due to its fauna and flora, it has been included in the highest level of protection. Bears, wolves, foxes, and lynx live here, and even the Tatra chamois was artificially released here in 1963. Trout swim in the streams, and we can find various species of falcons as well as the golden eagle here.

The area of Národný park Slovenský raj is 19,414 hectares. Two rivers, the Hnilec and the Hornád, flow through the park, creating unique water phenomena—canyons, gorges, ravines, and waterfalls. The longest gorge is Prielom Hornádu, which was declared a national nature reserve as early as 1964. The section is 16 km long and belongs to the cadastre of the village of Letanovce. The trail is full of bridges, ladders, footbridges, and chains. Tourists from far and wide come to admire the wonderful scenery here.

The most visited gorge in Slovenský raj is Suchá Belá, through which a stream of the same name flows. You can reach it from the tourist center of Podlesok near the village of Hrabušice. The valley is interspersed with several waterfalls such as Misové vodopády, Korytový, or the beautiful Okienkový vodopád. With good hiking boots, even children can manage this undemanding and interesting hike.

Explore gorges, waterfalls, and the adrenaline-filled via ferrata

Národný park Slovenský raj also offers other gorges to explore. Klaštorská dolina is relatively short but popular with families with children. On the 1.5-kilometer route, you can admire Vodopád objaviteľov, Strakov vodopád, or Dúhový vodopád. Your starting point will be Kláštorisko, which is a ruin of a 13th-century Carthusian monastery. You will find a tourist center and a restaurant here. The entrance to this part of Slovenský raj is a rope bridge—a footbridge that was the first to be built when the gorge was opened to the public.

We also recommend visiting other nature reserves of Slovenský raj. In the Sokolia dolina gorge, which is the steepest valley in the park, you will find Závojový vodopád. With its height of 75 meters, it is the highest waterfall in Slovenský raj, and you can visit it from Tomášovská Belá. A no less famous gorge is Kyseľ, where the second largest waterfall in this park, Obrovský vodopád, is located. Adrenaline enthusiasts in the gorge will certainly be pleased by the Kyseľ Ferrata—a place where you can try rock climbing.

Other popular gorges include Piecky, Veľký Sokol, and Tiesňavy. The gorges in NP Slovenský raj require an entry fee but are open year-round. The weather, just like in the mountains, can be changeable here. Before your visit, always check the forecast and check the status of the hiking trails on the national park's website. Do not forget good, waterproof clothing or a raincoat. Due to its humidity, Slovenský raj resembles a primeval forest.

The most beautiful view and a magical ice cave await you

The most beautiful view in Slovenský raj will undoubtedly open up to you at Tomášovský výhľad. You can reach this rocky outcrop from the tourist center of Čingov or from the village of Smižany. Even seniors or families with children can handle the ascent to it. Of course, caution is advised. From an altitude of 667 m a.s.l., you will be able to see as far as the Vysoké Tatry mountains.

There is a large number of caves in Národný park Slovenský raj, most of which remain unexplored. Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa, accessible from the village of Dobšiná, is open to the public. And as the name suggests, the cave is a magical realm of ice. So, if your children love Frozen, Elsa, Anna, or the snowman named Olaf, a visit to the cave will be an unforgettable experience for them.

If you are looking for a place in Slovenský raj to swim or laze about so that you can rest after a demanding hike, try the Klauzy water reservoir. The shores of the Palcmanská Maša water reservoir in the village of Dedinky also offer perfect relaxation. This largest water reservoir in Slovenský raj will also be an ideal starting point for your further wanderings through the national park.

Thanks to its countless natural beauties, Slovenský raj is the right place for an active holiday. Go on hikes here and admire what nature has created. Kaštieľ v Betliari

Kaštieľ v Betliari

Betliar

Just 3 kilometers north of the village of Rožňava lies the picturesque village of Betliar, which proudly boasts a luxurious 17th-century noble residence. Kaštieľ Betliar was originally built as an advanced fortification of Hrad Krásna Hôrka. Did you know that Kaštieľ v Betliari is the only manor house in Slovakia that has been preserved with its original furnishings and collections after the end of World War II? All the exhibits that you can view in its interior once belonged to the Hungarian noble family of Andrássy. They were considered the most prominent aristocrats in Europe. In Slovakia, they were known thanks to four hundred years of ownership of Hrad Krásna Hôrka and Kaštieľ Betliar.

On the site of the original older Renaissance manor house, a truly luxurious residence was built between 1881 and 1886, which Count Emanuel I Andrássy had renovated. A member of the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, he was inspired by English country estates. His son Gejza I was responsible for further modernization, resulting in a lavish residence featuring electric lighting, central heating, 16 bathrooms, a magnificent library, and numerous apartments that were inhabited by the social elite during times of legendary hunts. The Andrássy family were passionate travelers, which was also reflected in the interior decoration. They filled the manor house with numerous valuable pieces of furniture, works of art, and extensive collections consisting of exotic objects, hunting trophies, and paintings by 19th-century realists.

The manor house served as the family residence until 1945. In the post-war period, it was nationalized, and today it houses a museum capturing the life of this prominent noble family. The exhibition of noble domestic culture from the 18th and 19th centuries was established and opened to the public after a complete reconstruction of the building in 1994. The museum exhibition is set up on the first and second floors and covers an area of 2,308 m². It consists of nearly 50 living rooms and several utility spaces, such as bathrooms, a wardrobe, and workspaces. Alongside exclusive pieces of furniture with tasteful textiles and upholstery, you can also view silver objects, utility porcelain, glass and ceramics, as well as oriental carpets and curtains. Ancient Egypt has long fascinated not only scientists and researchers but also passionate travelers, and it was no different in the case of the Andrássy family. The ground floor of the manor house is therefore dedicated to a unique collection of egyptological valuables. Perhaps the most attractive artifact is the mummy of the priest of the god Amun brought from the burial ground in Giza. Its age is estimated to be from the 12th century BC. Another rarity is the mummified body of an unknown Egyptian child and grave finds in the form of amulets and their fragments.

The Andrássy family were also passionate hunters. An Exhibition of Exotic Trophies has been established for this hobby combined with a fascination for exotic countries. Count Emanuel, who undertook an adventurous journey to India in 1849, is considered the founder of this unique collection. His footsteps were followed by his son Gejza I, who became famous as an exceptional hunter and an enthusiast of everything thrilling and dangerous. The exhibition contains specimens from Africa and Asia and is installed in the premises of the winter garden to evoke an engaging and adventurous atmosphere for visitors. Among the museum's greatest attractions is also the main library, founded in 1790 by Leopold Andrássy. At the time of its inception, it contained 565 books, mainly in the fields of history, medicine, physics, and philosophy. Today, it consists of more than 14,000 volumes of theological, philosophical, historical, and geographical works from the 15th to the 19th century, written in six different languages. The most valuable specimens are incunabula. The oldest is a medical book published in Venice in 1486. Your tour ends in a magnificent English park with a waterfall, a cave, and three fountains, which was inscribed in the list of historic gardens and parks of the world in 1977.

After an exhausting but all the more exciting tour of the manor house, take a walk to the nearby Hermes Well. Crown your nice day in a stylish room of a family guesthouse. However, if you are looking for more privacy, click on the accommodation in Betliar page, and the complete offer of accommodation near Kaštieľ Betliar will be displayed to you. You will find a variety of romantic cottages and stylish apartments there. Reserve the following days for exploring the beauties of Slovenské rudohorie and Volovské vrchy.

Kaštieľ Strážky

Kaštieľ Strážky

Spišská Belá

In the northern part of the Poprad Basin, at the confluence of the Poprad and the Beliansky stream, lies the town of Spišská Belá. Right here you will find a gem of Slovak Renaissance architecture, kaštieľ Strážky. Spišská Belá is situated in the Prešov Region, in the district of Kežmarok, approximately 20 km north of Poprad, the gateway to the tourist-beloved Vysoké Tatry. The local manor house attracts visitors not only with its charming architecture, but also with valuable permanent exhibitions and occasional programming by the Slovenská národná galéria. The charm of this unique place is completed by an 19th-century English park, which is made for a romantic stroll.

Art lovers can let themselves be enchanted by four permanent exhibitions in kaštieľ Strážky. Two of them are presentations of visual art pieces. The exhibition Portrét 17.–19. storočia na Spiši is a collection of portraits consisting largely of works from the family gallery of the former owners of the manor house (the Horváth-Stansith, Szirmay, Mednyánszky, and Czóbel families, as well as Spiš families such as Csáky, Esterházy, etc.). The second visual art exhibition, entitled Ladislav Mednyánszky a Strážky, is the only permanent exhibition in Slovakia presenting the works of one of the main representatives of Central European painting of the last third of the 19th and early 20th century, Ladislav Mednyánszky. The exhibition is a selection from a comprehensive body of the artist's works, which primarily come from his early periods and document individual stages of the development of his artistic style.

The third interesting exhibition of the picturesque manor house is Historická knižnica Strážky, which is part of the national cultural heritage. Its origins date back to the last quarter of the 16th century. The impressive collection contains an incredible 8,500 volumes, magazines, and maps. The last exhibition of the Slovenská národná galéria can be viewed by visitors in the premises of kaštieľ Strážky. Under the title Sochárstvo na Slovensku v 20. storočí, works of important Slovak sculptors from the second half of the 20th century are presented here in the impressive setting of the English park. The picturesque park grounds blend pleasantly with the riverbed of the Poprad River and the surrounding countryside. It thus creates a beautiful scenery for a pleasant walk with an artistic touch.

A magnificent artistic object is undoubtedly the building of kaštieľ Strážky itself. It was built on the foundations of a Gothic castle. Later owners, the Horváth-Stansith family, gradually rebuilt it into a beautiful Renaissance manor house. This picturesque manor house acquired its present appearance through a reconstruction in the 17th century. A typical square floor plan with an inner courtyard was created by adding a fourth wing after a fire at the beginning of the 18th century. Kaštieľ Strážky, together with the kostol sv. Anny and a Renaissance bell tower in the historic town center, forms a national cultural monument.

Can you get enthusiastic about art and architectural monuments set in unique outdoor scenery? If so, definitely do not miss a visit to Spišská Belá and kaštieľ Strážky during your holiday in the Tatras. You can combine a trip here with a tour of Belianska jaskyňa, the largest and only accessible high-mountain dripstone cave in the Tatranský národný park. A matter of course during a holiday in this region is a wide range of accommodation near kaštieľ Strážky. Accommodation in Kežmarok presents a broad spectrum of apartments, guesthouses, picturesque villas, cottages, and chalets. You will certainly find something to your liking here.

Observatórium Lomnický štít

Observatórium Lomnický štít

Vysoké Tatry mesto

A cable car trip to Lomnický štít is a pinnacle adrenaline experience for many visitors to the Tatry. For most of us, it is unimaginable that people come to this place regularly to work here daily. They are the employees of Observatórium Lomnický štít, the highest-located workplace in Slovakia. The observatory is situated at an altitude of 2,632 m above sea level, on the summit of the second-highest peak of Vysoké Tatry. A cable car leads here from Skalnaté pleso. The starting point is Tatranská Lomnica, one of the largest settlements in Vysoké Tatry. Truly fit hikers are also offered an incredible hiking experience here: a climb up Lomničák accompanied by mountain guides.

Observatórium Lomnický štít was established between 1957 and 1962 as a result of a global initiative during the International Geophysical Year. Since that period, it has served for meteorological measurements and observations by Slovenský hydrometeorologický ústav. In 1964, Astronomický ústav SAV also began conducting its research here. The main object of observation for astronomers on Lomnický štít is our largest star, the Sun. The observatory is among the world's rarities, as systematic research into the solar emission lines takes place here. Excursions to this unique workplace of the astronomical institute are possible only during open house days, which are usually held twice a year. During this time, anyone can peek into the premises of our highest-located observatory and, in case of good visibility, observe the starry sky up close.

Lomnický štít is a major attraction for tourists. In addition to a wonderful panoramic view of Malá Studená dolina, the five Spišské plesá tarns, Ľadový štít, Gerlach, Vysoká, Rysy, and Kriváň, you can also enjoy a delicious coffee here in the stylish café Dedo. Have you ever drunk coffee at an altitude of 2,634 m above sea level? They will be happy to prepare one for you on Lomnický štít. A night spent under the starry sky on the summit of Lomničák is undoubtedly a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, the price of such an adventure is unaffordable for most visitors, so they prefer accommodation near Observatórium Lomnický štít. Accommodation in Tatranská Lomnica offers a wide range of guesthouses and apartments, as well as pleasant mountain huts and wooden chalets. Choose the right one for yourself and get a good night's sleep, because every day in the Tatry brings new adventures.

On the way down from Lomnický štít, you will step off the cable car at the picturesque Skalnaté pleso spreading at its foot. Here, in addition to a pleasant walk around the moraine tarn and a beautiful view, you can enjoy a stay with your little ones in the popular Svištia krajinka. Afterward, the cable car will comfortably take you back to Tatranská Lomnica. Do not leave the Tatry just yet, though. Right in Tatranská Lomnica, they have prepared a great ride for you on Bobová dráha Tatrabob. Enjoy the adrenaline under the Tatras' peaks.

Zoologická záhrada Košice

Zoologická záhrada Košice

Košice

Zoologická záhrada Košice is the largest zoo not only in Slovakia, but in all of Central Europe. It extends over an impressive 289 hectares of the natural environment of Čierna Hora in Košice, in the Kavečany district, with approximately 75 hectares accessible to the public.

At present, more than 240 different animal species live in the zoo, representing the fauna of all continents. It opened its doors to visitors in 1986, following seven years of construction. At that time, visitors could view 23 animal species, mostly consisting of native Carpathian fauna. Over time, both the area open to the public and the number of individual animal species expanded to reach its current size and variety.

Some animal species cannot be found in any other zoo in Slovakia. These include, for example, Humboldt penguins, toco toucans, Andean condors, harbor seals, or Altai wapiti. However, the zoo also houses many very rare captive species. From this large selection, we can mention the North Chinese leopard, scimitar-horned oryx, Bhutan takin, or Tatra chamois. Among the other highlights of the Košice zoo are the largest aviary in Slovakia, as well as the largest brown bear enclosure among all zoos in Central Europe.

As the only zoo in Slovakia, it boasts an established botanical trail, which was gradually expanded to include other sections such as the Bird Trail, Beekeeping Trail, Floodplain Forest, and Geological Trail, which compares the Carpathian and Altai (Central Asia) mountain ranges. One section of the trail is also the Siberian ibex enclosure, which cannot be found anywhere else in Slovakia. You will also find interactive elements with geological and paleontological themes here.

Zoologická záhrada Košice can likewise pride itself on many breeding successes in terms of the number of reared offspring. It even holds an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records from 2002, when breeders achieved a unique milestone—bear quintuplets were born here. Since 2017, the zoo has been a full member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), which unites elite global zoos. In addition, it is an active member of other prominent organizations, including EAZA, UCSZOO, EARATA, IZE, and Species360.

Part of ZOO Košice is also the popular DinoPark, which has been open to visitors since 2013. Across an area of nearly 5 hectares, dozens of life-sized Mesozoic giants of our planet will amaze you. You can also visit a unique 3D cinema, have fun on the paleontological playground, or try the adrenaline swing.

You can reach the zoo from Košice by public transit (the terminal stop is ZOO). However, if you want to treat yourself and your children to a complete experience, we recommend booking accommodation in the area surrounding ZOO Košice and visiting other nearby attractions offered by the historic city of Košice. Letisko Košice

Letisko Košice

Košice

Medzinárodné letisko Košice is the second largest airport in Slovakia. It has an excellent location, as it is situated just 6 km from the center of Košice, in the Barca city district. The airport operates several regular direct flights, thanks to which you have the opportunity to visit more than 500 destinations with just one layover. The metropolis of Eastern Slovakia literally connects you to the whole world, and it is entirely up to you where you choose to go. The interest of new airlines in opening new routes and the number of passengers transported, which in 2018 exceeded a record 500 thousand passengers, prove that the airport is indeed a busy transport hub.

Aviation in Košice has a history spanning over a century. As early as 1906, a hot-air balloon took to the sky over the city for the first time, and four years later, local residents could admire three airplanes at the first aviation day in Krásna nad Hornádom (today's Košice city district Krásna). During the First Czechoslovak Republic, a military airport was built in the city, which later also served civil aircraft and sports pilots. From May 5, 1924, a regular route of Československé aerolínie began operating on the Košice – Bratislava – Praha line, which, with minor interruptions, functions to this day. Construction of the current airport in the Barca city district began in 1950 and joined the modern transport structures of Europe at that time. A longer runway and apron were built. Československé aerolínie also added a new direct route from Praha to Košice and back to the new airport, which became known to the public as the "Východoslovenský expres".

Over the years, the airport underwent several more renovations to comply with strict global standards. In 2004, a new modern terminal was finally opened, which in the following year was awarded the title Building of the Year 2005. The terminal building provides its passengers with extraordinary comfort both before departure and after arrival.

Since the airport provides both domestic and international air traffic, 24/7 passport and customs control is a matter of course. The terminal hall features generous space to handle up to 1,000 passengers per hour and also offers airline agency offices, a business lounge, a room for mothers with children, or a meditation room. In both the arrival and departure areas, you will find rich refreshment options in the form of a bistro or café. You can sample exquisite wines before departure in the wine bar, and last-minute gift shopping is taken care of in the duty-free shop. Naturally, short-term or long-term parking directly at the airport is also available.

Whether your trip is for business or you are heading on a vacation to an exotic destination, departing from Letisko Košice is a great idea. Enrich your travels with a visit to Košice as well, and find accommodation near Letisko Košice. You will be just a stone's throw away from the metropolis of the east, giving you time to see historical monuments or visit fine restaurants offering a rich selection of Tokaj wines from the nearby Tokaj region. Perhaps you will even decide to extend your stay, in which case we have great accommodation for you in the best apartments in Košice.

Sigord

Sigord

Kokošovce

Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir is located near the village of Kokošovce, not far from Prešov, surrounded by beautiful nature. When this water area was being built between 1965 and 1967, the primary focus was on flood protection and irrigation for the needs of the local agricultural cooperative. However, this purpose was soon abandoned, and locals began coming here for recreation. Sigord was so popular that the city of Prešov had a pier built there.

Following the floods in 2008, the reservoir was drained due to its inadequate technical condition. The bottom gradually became overgrown with invasive woody plants. The reservoir was renovated between 2011 and 2012, when it was refilled and over a thousand fish were released into it. The two-hectare dam is currently used primarily by fishermen, but swimming is also possible at one's own risk. A boathouse operates by the water, providing not only summer boating but also winter ice skating, and it organizes cultural, sports, and ecological events throughout the year. Pallet seating and fire pits are prepared for visitors within the boathouse area.

The civic association Čavargy contributed to the development of the area, having built the so-called Sigordské koľečko (Sigord Loop) in 2018 with the help of volunteers, which is an educational trail around the reservoir. It includes three information boards that reveal details about the local fauna, as well as new benches with a view of the water surface. A leisurely walk takes about 30 minutes. In the summer, a tourist train also runs on the route Malý Muk – Sigord Racová and back.

The Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir is located about 12 km from the center of Prešov. It is also possible to get here by public transport. If you choose to drive, you can park in the parking lot above the boathouse. A recreational center is located near the water, which also provides dining options.

Indoor swimming with attractions is offered by the nearby Aquapark Delňa. Once you have had enough swimming, there are trips to the surrounding area, where you will encounter several castle ruins: Zbojnícky hrad, Bodoň, Šebeš, and Soľnohrad. You can head to Prešov for culture, which truly offers a bit of everything; you will find the Divadlo Jonáša Záborského theater, the Šarišská galéria gallery, and a Calvary with a view of the city.

If you decide to stay near the Vodná nádrž Sigord reservoir, start your search for accommodation directly in Kokošovce, where you can choose from guest houses or cottages. The city of Prešov itself has a wide range of options, where you can book an apartment in the city center or a room in a guest house. Sigord has regained its former popularity and is a place that is lively all year round. Come and experience an interesting holiday here as well.

Hrad Bodoň

Hrad Bodoň

Zlatá Baňa

It could be said that Slovakia is a country of castles and chateaux. However, many of them have been gnawed by the teeth of time, while others were destroyed by hostile armies. Hrad Bodoň, which was built as a defense fort on the western slopes of Slanské vrchy, did not withstand the rampage of Tatar troops either. The first written mention of the fortress dates back to 1285, and as you correctly assume, it bears its name after the Bodoň hill, on which only its remains are located today. The castle ceased to exist in 1299, meaning that it fulfilled its defense function for only a single decade.

The fortress was built on a rocky elevation at an altitude of 855 meters above sea level. Its founder was the nobleman Budun of Ploské. The top of the rock cliff has a square floor plan measuring 52 x 50 meters and formed the living area of the castle. This was protected around the perimeter by boundary walls. In the highest part of the plateau, a circular stone tower with an outer diameter of up to 8 meters was located on the northern side. It is assumed that wooden dwellings and farm buildings stood behind the ramparts.

You can reach the ruins from the village of Abranovce as well as Zlatá Baňa. If you have decided to use the second, easier option, a yellow-marked hiking trail approximately 4 km long will lead you to the castle. The path from Abranovce is somewhat more demanding, but all the more interesting. Approximately one-third of the way up, you will come across a strange natural formation, the so-called Raslavkameň. Several legends are tied to it. The most famous one tells of a young knight from Hrad Bodoň who, against his mother's will, used to meet a commoner girl from Prešov. To prevent soldiers from tracking him down, he shod his horse's horseshoes backward. However, his mother found out and cursed Raslav. He turned to stone on the spot. Locals believe that healing energy radiates from the stone. Whether the stone has magical power is something you must see for yourself.

After a short ascent, you will reach a plateau dominated by a huge rock cliff. Today, the traces of the castle consist only of the remnants of the stone tower and castle fortifications. On the forest clearing below the castle, there are benches where you can rest. For a three-hour trip, in addition to a sufficient amount of water, do not forget to pack sausages and bacon. At the resting area, you will find a large fire pit, which is perfect for a family barbecue.

On the way back from the fort, stop by the unique 4-meter wooden megaphone. Sit inside and enjoy the amplified sounds echoing from the forest. After a demanding hike, treat yourself to a rest in a cozy room of a pleasant guest house. You can view the entire offer of accommodation near Hrad Bodoň on our page accommodation in Zlatá Baňa. The following day, take a trip to the nearby village of Červenica and discover the mysterious underground world of the oldest opal mines in the world. Opals from the Slovenské opálové bane are known for their intense play of colors and are highly valued on world markets for their unique properties. End your stay in the Prešovský kraj region by splashing around in the pools of the summer lido Plaza Beach Solivar. A great alternative during bad weather is the covered Aquapark Delňa Prešov.

Hrad Čičva

Hrad Čičva

Sedliská

In terms of the number of medieval castles, Slovakia ranks among the leading countries in Europe. One such castle is Hrad Čičva (also known as Čičava) in the village of Sedliská. It is located on Mernícka pahorkatina, which is part of Beskydské predhorie, above the local area of Podčičva. The castle is now just a ruin, but it is well worth planning a trip to visit it.

You can reach Hrad Čičva, which stands at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, directly from the village. The walk from the bus stop to the castle hill takes approximately 10 minutes. Motorized visitors have a parking lot available right below the castle. Due to the easy nature of the route, this attraction in Sedliská is accessible to all age groups. Wandering through the castle ruins, the romantic setting, and the beautiful views will be appreciated not only by history enthusiasts, but also by younger generations.

The castle is first mentioned in a deed of donation from King Stephen V dating back to 1270, which the monarch granted to the nobleman Raynold along with the surrounding estate. The castle protected an important trade route above the pass known as Porta Polonica (Polish Gate), leading from south to north. The core of the castle consisted of a trapezoid-shaped inner area on the castle hill, which was built in the 15th century by the owners at the time, the Rozgonyi family. The complex was surrounded by a stone wall. Opposite the core, near the entrance gate, stood a palace. The most remarkable feature of the castle is the bergfried. This tongue-twister of a term was used to describe the main round castle tower, which mostly served as the last refuge for the castle's defenders. It is rarely found in the architecture of Slovak castles.

The castle was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. During its history, an outer bailey was added, followed later by an artillery bastion. An interesting fact is that in 1523, the castle became the property of the "bloody countess" Elizabeth Báthory, who married her husband Ferenc Nádasdy in 1573 in nearby Vranov. In 1610, their daughter Catherine received the castle as a dowry. In 1711, the castle fell into the hands of Imperial General János Pálffy without a fight. His successor, General Lanken, ordered its demolition. It has been a ruin ever since.

After visiting this fascinating place, it is worth moving on to nearby Vranov nad Topľou, where the remarkable sacred monument Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie is well worth your attention. Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Vranov nad Topľou

The Roman Catholic Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie is the most valuable and oldest historical monument in the town of Vranov nad Topľou. Since 2008, the church has carried the designation "minor," making it one of thirteen basilicas in Slovakia with this significant honorary title, which comes directly from the Pope. This modestly looking historical monument came to the awareness of Christians worldwide thanks to a miraculous event that occurred in the region. A rare historical icon of the Virgin Mary by an unknown author shed bloody tears before the eyes of local people. This happened in 1708.

The miraculous painting of the Virgin Mary executed on canvas with oil colors was subsequently transferred to the church. On September 8, 1708, the church was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and ever since, it has been drawing Marian pilgrims from all over Zemplín every year on September 8. Another miracle is the event from 1718 when a fire broke out in the church, but the painting remained undamaged. The church thus became an even more significant pilgrimage site, as evidenced by the Decree on the Establishment of the Pilgrimage Site dated June 29, 1999.

The church was originally built in 1441 by the Franciscans as a monastery church. After their departure from the town, the evangelicals took over the administration of the church from the Franciscans and managed it from 1540 to 1672. Subsequently, in 1672, the spiritual administration of the church was taken over by the monastic order of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, the so-called Paulines, with whom the basilica is associated to this day. The cult of the Mother of God is characteristic of the Paulines, as they managed many Marian shrines. In the territory of Slovakia, their administration also included, for example, the pilgrimage sites in Šaštín and Marianka near Bratislava. After almost a century of activity in Vranov, the Paulines had to leave the monastery by order of Joseph II, and their order moved from Slovakia to Poland. The monks returned back to Vranov only after more than 200 years.

From an architectural standpoint, the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie ranks among late Gothic monumental sacral structures. Although you wouldn't say so at a glance from the outside, the church interior is a magnificent Baroque work from the first half of the 18th century and appeals to every visitor. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary of Vranov depicting the Mother of God holding the child on her right forearm is located in the center of the altar superstructure. The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are also other, smaller altars in the basilica. The side ones are dedicated to St. Paul the Hermit, after whom the Pauline Order is named, and St. Pope Clement I. The fourth altar, located on the northern side of the church, is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, the martyr of the seal of confession. The great reverence of the Vranov Paulines for this saint is confirmed by the reliquary with his remains in the interior and the sculptural group in the exterior of the church, included in the state list of cultural monuments.

Also preserved in the Vranov basilica is a very valuable Baroque-Rococo collection of liturgical objects consisting of a monstrance, chalice, ciborium, and pectoral cross. This unique liturgical set is the work of the most famous personality of Baroque goldsmithing in Slovakia, Ján Silaši, and rightfully belongs on the list of national cultural monuments. A precious testimony to the existence of Baroque sculpture in Eastern Slovakia are the perfect woodcarving creations from the workshop of Jozef Hartman, which adorn the altars and the pulpit. The atmosphere of the distant past is complemented by wall paintings by the prominent Czech Baroque painter J. L. Kracker.

If the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie has caught your interest and you would like to find out more, a guided tour can be requested from the Rímskokatolícky farský úrad Sever, which is seated in the parish building of the former Pauline monastery. Although the monastery building is of a later date, originating from the 17th century, it is likewise a historical monument worth visiting. Right from a distance, you will be charmed by the entrance portal, which can boast the attribute of an architectural landmark of artistic significance.

Book your accommodation near the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie and come enjoy Vranov nad Topľou and its surroundings. After visiting the historical monuments in the town, whose name is derived from a crow (vrana), head out into nature and discover the Slanské vrchy. Set out on foot, by bike, or in winter comfortably on cross-country skis. You will be thrilled not only by the experiences the region offers, but also by the exceptional accommodation options in the Prešov Region.
