Štátna opera was founded as Spevohra Divadla Jozefa Gregora Tajovského in 1959. The ensemble was later renamed to Opera Divadla Jozefa Gregora Tajovského, and since 1993, when it became independent from the drama ensemble in Zvolen, it has borne the name Štátna opera. It is housed in the premises of the Národný dom building, built in the 1920s. Thanks to its unique architectural design, the Štátna opera building was declared a national monument.
