Where to go on a trip Sabinov

Expozícia filmu Obchod na korze a Múzeum

Expozícia filmu Obchod na korze a Múzeum

Sabinov

Šariš is a wonderful region of Slovakia. Among its gems is undoubtedly the Expozícia filmu Obchod na korze a Múzeum exhibition and museum, located directly in Sabinov. After all, who wouldn't know the legendary Czechoslovak film Obchod na korze (The Shop on Main Street), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1965? Such a success was recorded for the very first time in the era of our cinematography back then.

The exhibition has been open to tourists since 2006, when the opening ceremony was attended by the wife of Mr. Ladislav Grosman, the author and screenwriter of this world-renowned picture. The main role featured Jozef Kroner, whose life-sized bronze cast statue of character Tóno Brtko now adorns the local Námestie slobody square. It serves as a reminder of the movie's message that freedom is not a given; it is a gift and a privilege worth standing up and fighting for. We must not forget this thought, and you can also sensitively explain a part of our history here to your children that belongs among the sadder and more painful ones. The exhibition is open on weekdays, and the town's cultural and information center operates alongside it.

Why specifically Sabinov? Because this famous film was shot right in this East Slovak town. In the permanent exhibition, in addition to the original script, props and photographs reminding visitors of the work during filming are prepared for you. Here you will also find written correspondence between the inhabitants of Sabinov and the filmmakers, a manuscript, foreign language translations of the work, and excerpts from the film constantly projected on the screen in the background, completing the authentic atmosphere of this place. The author of the work, Ladislav Grosman, still closely watches over the events in the museum through his likeness in the form of a bust. Juraj Navrátil also donated a record with the film's main theme song to the museum, and the author's wife contributed photographs, documents, and study transcripts that will guide you through the life of this brilliant screenwriter. The residents of Sabinov contributed as well, revealing their perspective on the filming through various written stories and experiences.

It is certainly worth staying longer in this region and exploring its hidden corners. Accommodation around the Expozícia filmu Obchod na korze a Múzeum is available to you in various forms. Lovely cottages, guesthouses, apartments, and hotels in the Prešovský region will provide you with a pleasant base so you can discover the beauties of Eastern Slovakia. Hike up to Kamenický hrad, which stands guard over the village of Kamenica, where you can also take a walk along the adjacent educational trail. You can also explore the beautiful nature of Čergov in a slightly less traditional way, on horseback, which they will gladly arrange for you at Farma Kamenica. During the summer season, you can refresh yourself at the Kúpalisko Sabinov swimming pool or at AQUApark Lipany. In winter, skiers will appreciate the proximity of the ski resorts Ski Drienica and Lysá Ski Resort.

Miniskanzen drevených chrámov

Miniskanzen drevených chrámov

Ľutina

Miniskanzen drevených chrámov is a Slovak rarity built on the grounds of Bazilika minor in the village of Ľutina in the Sabinov district. The replicas of wooden churches, constructed at a 1:10 scale, rank among the gems of folk sacral architecture of eastern Slovakia. In 2011, the mini-open-air museum was opened and consecrated by the Archbishop of Prešov.

The construction of this unique project took place in several stages. Thanks to co-financing by the European Union within the Cross-Border Cooperation Program Poland – Slovakia (first and second stage) and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism (third stage), the exhibition was successfully expanded to include churches from Poland and Ukraine.

The first stage was carried out in the years 2011–2012 and brought 11 miniatures from the surroundings of Snina to the open-air museum. The scale models originate from the villages of Brežany, Hrabová Roztoka, Inovce, Jalová, Kalná Roztoka, Kožuchovce, Matysová, Ruská Bystrá, Ruský Potok, Topoľa, and Uličské Krivé.

The second stage was carried out in 2013 and brought another 10 specimens to the open-air museum, mainly from the surroundings of Bardejov. The scale models originate from the villages of Frička, Hutka, Jedlinka, Kožany, Krivé, Lukov-Venecia, Mikulášová, Tročany, Vyšná Polianka, and Zboj.

The third stage was carried out in the years 2015–2016. It brought further scale models to the open-air museum, this time from the villages of Bodružal, Dobroslava, Hunkovce, Korejovce, Krajné Čierno, Ladomirová, Miroľa, Nižný Komárnik, Potoky, Príkra, Šemetkovce, and Vyšný Komárnik. Scale models of Ukrainian churches were added from the villages of Jaseňa, Kanora, Lazečšina, Rekity, Svaľava, and Užok. The subsequent addition of 9 miniatures from the surroundings of Svidník (2015–2016) was funded by donations from organizations of Slovak compatriots and private donors from the USA.

During the tour of the miniatures, notice their arrangement in the nicely landscaped, fenced, and illuminated area. Each scale model has its own information board with a description and a brief history. Most of the scale models of Slovak churches date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Each of the presented churches is original and exceptional in some way. Their global value is even confirmed by the inclusion of eight churches from the Slovak part of the Carpathian Arc into the UNESCO List.

The village of Ľutina, where the mini-open-air museum is located, is a well-known and sought-after pilgrimage site. So do not hesitate any longer and plan a trip to its surroundings. You can find suitable accommodation on our pages accommodation in the Sabinov district.

Ľutinská hora

Ľutinská hora

Ľutina

You do not have to belong to a group of strongly devout Christians to visit the Ľutinská hora pilgrimage site. Crowds of tourists regularly flow into this location to honor the site of the apparition of Saint Nicholas, who appeared right here in 1851 to a poor girl, Zuzana Fekete. Ľutinská hora is a sought-after location for tourists behind the village of Ľutina, and the most visited pilgrimage of Greek Catholic believers in Slovakia takes place here every year.

Just 800 m from Ľutinská hora, visitors will find the Bazilika Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky. The beautiful grounds of this sacred building will enchant you with their charm. You will find a total of 4 chapels in it. The Kaplnka Zjavenia Sv. Mikuláša was built in 1930 on the site of a drinking water spring. It was right here that Saint Nicholas spoke to Zuzana Fekete and asked her to have a cross built next to the spring. Priests regularly bless the water from the spring during liturgical rites. The water reportedly has healing effects on various skin and eye problems and has already helped many people. With the help of an underground pipe, it is led from the spring location to the second chapel, Kaplnka Sv. Kríža, where you can draw it into your own containers.

The history of the Kaplnka Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky is also interesting. After the approval of the apparition of Saint Nicholas to Zuzana Fekete by a letter from the Bishop of Prešov, Jozef Gaganec, in 1853, local believers traveled through Vienna, Buda, Transylvania, and Subcarpathia to spread the news of the apparition of Saint Nicholas and collect funds for the construction of the chapel. Pilgrims from Hungary, Transylvania, and Galicia began arriving at the site, bringing stones from which the chapel and the retaining wall were subsequently built. It was completed in 1854. In 1878, both the Kaplnka Sv. Anny and the Kaplnka Sv. Kríža were completed.

On the grounds of this pilgrimage site, there is also the Dom Mikuláša Klimčáka, which serves for spiritual gatherings. At the same time, it houses a permanent exhibition of artworks by Slovak and foreign painters. The well-maintained Záhrada Sv. Bohorodičky also has a spiritual charm, where you can pray the rosary or simply take a walk and enjoy the beautiful views. When you are at this place, definitely do not miss the Miniskanzen drevených chrámov. You will find very interesting, mostly Greek Catholic wooden churches built on a 1:10 scale.

After the spiritual experience from this place, we recommend taking a moment to quiet down. If you feel like exploring the surroundings and are interested in other attractions, you can choose truly interesting places. Tourists will appreciate the opportunity to put on their hiking boots and embark on an easy hike to Hanigovský hrad. Several hiking trails lead to it. From its top, you can see the village of Hanigovce and its surroundings. In the summer season, you can fully enjoy water fun thanks to AQUApark Lipany. Anglers will be pleased with the opportunity to fish at Rožkovianske rybníky.

Slightly tired, but enriched with new experiences, you do not have to return home immediately. Feel free to stay here for a longer period. It is a good idea to book accommodation near Ľutinská hora in advance. From the wide range of accommodation facilities in Ľutina, we can recommend all of them. They are highly rated by clients who have already stayed with accommodation providers thanks to bookings through our portal. Are you already pondering cozy apartments or rather cottages and chalets?

Hanigovský hrad

Hanigovský hrad

Hanigovce

You can visit the remains of Hanigovský hrad above the village of Hanigovce, in the Sabinov district. The castle ruins, also known as Nový hrad, are located at the foot of Čergov, northeast of the town of Lipany. The castle rock reaches an altitude of 771 m above sea level, and you can reach it following the green hiking trail directly from the village of Hanigovce. A yellow hiking trail leads here from the neighboring village of Ľutina. It is an easy walk of approximately 2 km. Your path to the ruins will be made more pleasant by a wellspring with seating and beautiful views.

A wooden fort from the 13th century, built by the nobleman Mikčo, originally stood on the castle hill. In the middle of the 14th century, he asked King Louis I to rebuild the castle into a stone one. He justified his request by stating that the castle was located in the borderlands with Poland and Russia, and that the fortress would strengthen protection. The king granted the request, and a stone structure was built on the castle hill. After the extinction of Mikčo's family line, the castle changed owners several times. The last mention dates back to 1557, when the castle burned down. The Pečovský noble family, who owned it at the time, did not restore it again, and the structure gradually fell into decay to its present form.

The castle area originally had a rectangular floor plan enclosed by castle fortifications. The residential palace consisted of two floors. Access to the fortress led from the southern side and was secured by a watchtower. Emplacements for cannons were created in the fortifications, and the castle was also guarded by loopholes. Other structures in the courtyard were probably made of wood, as no remnants were left after the fire. The stone objects are still clearly identifiable on the castle hill today. The interior of the palace is covered with rubble up to the windows. A significant part of the fortification has also been preserved, reaching up to 3 meters in some places.

If you decide to take a trip to the castle ruins above the village of Hanigovce, be sure not to miss a visit to the Miniskanzen drevených chrámov or water relaxation at Aquapark Lipany in the surrounding area. You can enjoy a magical walk in the picturesque surroundings of Rožkovianske rybníky and beautiful views from the castle rock of Kamenický hrad. The surroundings of Hanigovce offer truly attractive tourist destinations. Come and see for yourself. Book accommodation near Hanigovský hrad and enjoy a stay full of experiences. You will certainly choose from the accommodation offer in Hanigovce on our portal. Visitors to this area especially prefer popular cottages with guaranteed privacy and comfort.

Fričovský kaštieľ

Fričovský kaštieľ

Fričovce

Surrounded by the picturesque nature of the Horný Šariš region, in the district of Prešov, in a quiet part of the village of Fričovce, you will find a true gem of Slovak Renaissance architecture. The beautiful Kaštieľ Fričovce manor house dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, when the construction of manor houses in Slovakia was at its peak. Its uniqueness lies primarily in its exterior sgraffito figurative decoration depicting around 150 historical and mythological figures. In addition to its beautiful architecture, the manor house attracts visitors with an excellent restaurant and an adjacent park with small ponds and historical trees.

This charming monument was built between 1623 and 1630 by the Berthóty family. The author of the figurative decoration is the painter and sgraffito artist Martin Waxman. He created the artwork on the building's facade using the two-color sgraffito technique, utilizing ivory and greyish-black charcoal. An interesting feature of the figures is their larger heads compared to their bodies. During creation, the author took into account the vertical perspective of the viewer looking up from below. In terms of content, you can admire up to 150 figures from various fields on the decoration. Here you will find ancient gods, figures symbolizing human virtues, figures from Hungarian and Polish history, kings, sultans, and emperors of the Roman Empire.

In 1998, the Tomko family became the owners of the manor house, breathing new life into the dilapidated building after more than 40 years. Extensive reconstruction included structural repairs, restoration of the exterior, interiors, outbuildings, and the park. The foundation of the greenery consists of deciduous trees reaching ages of 100 to 150 years. You can admire old linden trees, chestnuts, maples, as well as wingnut, mulberry, tulip tree, and ginkgo. Small ponds complete the beautiful scenery. In addition to touring the historical building and taking a walk through the picturesque park, you can also treat yourself to a delicious lunch or sit down for a fine coffee in the manor house. Directly inside the historical premises of the manor house, you will find a popular restaurant with a selection of culinary specialties of Slovak cuisine.

You can combine a tour of this beautiful manor house in Fričovce with an exciting adrenaline adventure: a ride in an armored personnel carrier. Would you like to step into the role of a soldier for a moment and explore the surrounding nature from aboard a tank? Or do you prefer a journey into history and making a trip to the ruins of Lipovský hrad castle? In nearby Lipovce, you can also venture into the mysterious underground of the unlit Zlá diera cave or to an interesting spot defying the laws of physics called the Lačnovská gravitačná anomália. Kamenický hrad

Kamenický hrad

Kamenica

You can find the ruins of Kamenický hrad in the Čergov mountain range. The castle hill rises above the village of Kamenica, located in the district of Sabinov. An educational trail with ten stops will reliably guide you through the most interesting places of this historical structure and its surroundings. In addition to the beautiful natural scenery surrounding the limestone castle cliff, you will also enjoy magical views of the panorama of the wider area. In good visibility, you can see as far as Ľubovniansky hrad, Hanigovský hrad, and Šarišský hrad from the top of the castle hill.

The construction of the castle above Kamenica took place at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The first written mention dates back to 1306, when the castle belonged to Rikolf Jr. According to documentary evidence, Rikolf built the castle at his own expense. The fortress's location near the Polish border suggests a military and defensive function in addition to a residential one. Throughout its history, the castle changed owners several times, but mostly belonged to the Traczay family. The year 1556 proved fatal for it, when it was conquered and began to fall into ruin. Currently, the preserved remnants are cared for by the civic association Kamenná veža. Among other things, it contributed to the construction of the educational trail, which was opened to visitors in 2009.

Of the monumental fortress, which ranked among the largest castles in Slovakia by area, you will currently find only minor original remnants on the castle hill. Thanks to the aforementioned civic association, the remediation of the remnants of the palace's northern wall was completed, and the mass of the tower and the northern bastion was stabilized. The castle complex is currently open to the public without restrictions. Access is relatively simple. A yellow hiking trail will bring you here directly from the village of Kamenica in about 30 minutes. From the village of Lúčka, you can reach the castle hill in approximately 45 minutes, and from the Potoky locality, also via the yellow route, in about 60 minutes.

Be sure to combine a trip to the remnants of Kamenického hrad with water relaxation and fun at Aquapark Lipany, a walk through the picturesque surroundings of Rožkovianske rybníky, or a visit to Miniskanzen drevených chrámov in the nearby village of Ľutina. Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša

Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša

Prešov

Did you know that Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša is the oldest Gothic sacral building in Prešov? During the times of Austria-Hungary, it was considered one of the most beautiful and perfect hall churches. Its construction was authorized by Queen Elizabeth in 1347. The elevation of the church to a co-cathedral church was decided in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. Come and inspect the magnificent interior of one of the oldest and most significant churches in Slovakia for yourself. You will certainly also be pleased by the view from the 71 m high church tower.

The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, bishop and miracle worker, whose feast day is celebrated by the Holy Church on December 6. Its foundations rest on an original older sacral structure from the 13th century on the site of an original German settlement. Kostol sv. Mikuláša was built as a single-nave structure with a raised polygonal presbytery. Its external dimensions reach a length of 54.7 m and a width of 34.45 m. It served as a Catholic parish church until 1531, when most burghers, along with priests, adopted the teachings of Martin Luther. From that time on, it became a Protestant church for citizens of German nationality for 140 years.

The change occurred after the town was occupied by the Habsburg army in 1671, when it once again became a church for Catholic believers for a time. Between 1682 and 1686, during the uprising of Imrich Tököly, it was returned to the Protestants once more. The church was returned to the Catholics in 1711 and has served as a Roman Catholic parish church ever since. Throughout its existence, the co-cathedral also experienced sad moments. It burned down six times and in 1918 was a silent witness to the Prešov Mutiny, during which 40 soldiers and 2 civilians were executed. Only a small part of the original Gothic-Renaissance furnishings has been preserved. Most was destroyed in fires or during religious unrest.

The dominant feature of the church is the main altar. It is a massive Baroque structure featuring a Gothic cabinet in the center with three niches and three sculptures. It is decorated with a Baroque canopy and side drapery. The author of this magnificent work is Prešov woodcarver Ján Weiss. The church also houses five other valuable altars in the Baroque and Renaissance-Baroque styles. Among the valuables are also Gothic sculptures of the Archangel Gabriel, the crucified Jesus Christ, and a small statue of Christ of Sorrows from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. In the church, you can also admire Gothic wall paintings on the northern side of the middle presbytery from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Another jewel is the large five-part Renaissance-Baroque organ from 1634, which is decorated with gold ornamentation. At its top, a small statue of Saint Michael the Archangel is placed.

From 2010 to 2021, the co-cathedral underwent an extensive interior and exterior reconstruction. In addition to a general overhaul of the large organ, the stained glass windows were restored, a new paint job was done, new electrical wiring, lighting, and sound systems were installed. The sanctuary was modified, and the wall frescoes were restored. The roofing was also replaced, and the entire facade was restored. Currently, regular services and concerts take place in the church. You can treat yourself to the view from the tower every day during the summer season.

After visiting this remarkable sacral building, treat yourself to a stroll through the main square, where a multitude of various restaurants, pastry shops, and pubs are located. If it is a hot summer day, do not hesitate and indulge in relaxation in the pools at Kúpaliska Plaza Beach Solivar or Kúpaliska Sídlisko III. A great alternative can be regeneration in the Salt Cave, where, in addition to exceptionally valuable salt extracted from the Klodawa salt mine, you can also look forward to pleasant music and a simulation of a starry sky. At the museum, you will also learn about the most valuable mineral in the world. No, it is not gold, but salt, which was mined and processed for long centuries in the Prešov city district of Solivar. One of the most interesting parts of the exhibition is also the one documenting the unique locality of Zlatá Baňa, where up to 173 different types of minerals were found. If you add fossils and prehistoric fossils to these points of interest, you will not want to leave the museum.

Enriched with new knowledge from the past, you can head out to meet adventure in the present. You will discover the infinite universe along with its mysteries in the Hvezdáreň a planetárium. Delight your senses as well and pamper yourself in the wellness center located in the basement of the aquapark. Boost your immunity and get rid of stress. A stay in the Finnish sauna will not only warm you up pleasantly but also relieve your aching joints. Furthermore, at temperatures between 60 and 100 °C, the sebaceous glands in the scalp are activated, significantly improving the quality of your hair. Try the beneficial effects of essential steam saunas, which will rid you of fatigue and improve blood circulation. Hot steam is a reliable healer – it clears your upper respiratory tract exceptionally well and helps prevent viral infections and colds. An infrared sauna is also at your disposal, which will thoroughly cleanse your skin and relax stiff muscles. The benefits of a stay in this sauna can safely be enjoyed by your children as well.

If you prefer to build your body's resistance through cold exposure, we have good news for you. Swap hot saunas for an ice cave, where temperatures as low as -15 °C will cool you down completely! Your sore legs will be taken care of by the Kneippova vodná cesta foot bath, which stimulates blood circulation in the lower extremities as you walk alternately through small pools of warm and cold water. The bottom of the tubs is lined with small pebbles that will give you a pleasant massage. This seemingly simple bath will help relieve head and neck pain and free you from insomnia. For relaxation, take advantage of the rest area with comfortable sun loungers.

During your stay at the aquapark, treat yourself to a delicious lunch at the restaurant with a bar and summer terrace. You can choose from daily menu dishes as well as a rich offer of fast food. You can also get a light bite directly in the wellness area. An electronic chip system is a given, allowing for cashless payments throughout the entire complex. The Prešov city aquapark has its doors open 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Prešov is an ideal destination for a summer holiday. It offers great opportunities for hiking, sports, and entertainment. On your way from the aquapark, take a stroll down Hlavné námestie square and taste delicious local specialties. Don't miss the famous ice cream shop on Floriánova ulica street. On “Trojica”, as locals call the pedestrian zone on the square, you can admire magnificent sacral monuments, the Konkatedrála sv. Mikuláša and the Chrámu svätej Trojice church. Delight your children as well and take them to the Detské interiérové ihrisko Marťanko indoor playground.
