In the former building of the orthodox synagogue in the town of Šurany, you will find Mestské múzeum. The permanent exhibition of the museum is accessible to visitors on the upper floor. The museum gathers into its collections archaeological finds from the well-known site Zámeček, artifacts from Šuriansky hrad, and various other items or documents that portray the history of the town. Do not miss a visit to the museum if you visit Šurany or its immediate surroundings.

The mission of the museum, which was established in 2007 as part of Mestské kultúrne stredisko, besides collecting, is also the rescue and restoration of objects or documents that have important historical explanatory value and help us portray events or happenings in past times. You can plan your tour of the museum every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Visitors will also broaden their horizons in the field of theater, which has a more than 150-year tradition in Šurany. Part of the exhibition is also dedicated to the oldest musical ensemble in Šurany, which is the šuriansky tamburáši. The development of ethnography is presented by an exhibition dedicated to traditional folk clothing or crafts such as basketry or ceramics.

An interesting feature is the model of the town of Šurany, which replicates the appearance of the town from the second half of the 17th century. During this period, the Ottoman-Turkish occupation prevailed in our territory, and the aforementioned Šuriansky hrad, which the model depicts, also resisted the expansion.

The Orthodox synagogue in Šurany, where the museum is located, is also a venue for many gallery exhibitions, concerts, or other social and cultural events. If you visit Šurany, do not miss the well-known archaeological site, which is Slovenská Trója – Zámeček. In terms of its area, it belongs among the largest and at the same time richest sites in Central Europe.

Kalvária Nitra

Kalvária Nitra

Nitra

Kalvária Nitra is located on a hill on the bank of the Nitra River in the southern part of the city. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. It is a frequent and popular spot for walks by locals as well as tourists who love coming here to enjoy the views. During major holidays, Christian pilgrimages are organized here.

Originally, a different calvary built in the last third of the 18th century stood on the site of the current one. It had seven stations and was replaced in 1885 (and subsequently consecrated in that same year) by the present calvary, which has fourteen stations. The original Kaplnka sv. Kríža chapel was converted into Kaplnka Božieho hrobu. While in the early years the calvary was outside the urban area, development gradually began to approach it in the 19th century until it surrounded it in the 20th century. At present, the calvary is very clearly visible from the city, and tourists often start out right from the center of Nitra to go and see it. Near the calvary is Lurdská jaskyňa, which also serves as a chapel.

Overall, the calvary consists of twelve Neo-Romanesque chapels depicting twelve stations of the Stations of the Cross. They are arranged along the path leading from Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie to Kaplnka Božieho hrobu. The latter is located at the top of the hill and represents the fourteenth station. In addition to the chapel of the final station, the Crucifixion statuary is also located at the top of the hill.

Since 1765, a small Renaissance monastery has stood at the top, originally built for the Spanish order of the Nazarenes. It gradually became a residence for retired priests and eventually an orphanage. Between 1878 and 1885, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style, and in 1925, an additional floor was added until it ultimately became the Mission House of the Mother of God.

Tourists also enjoy taking a trip to the Nitra calvary, mainly due to the great view it offers. The landmarks of Nitra, Šibeničný vrch, Zoborské vrchy, Tribeč, Pohronský Inovec, Vtáčnik, and Štiavnické vrchy are all right in the palm of their hand. That is what you call a perfect panoramic view. Children and seniors can easily handle the walk to the top of the calvary; it is a pleasant stroll along a grassy path.

Come and experience Nitra from a different perspective. Book accommodation near Kalvária Nitra and follow in the footsteps of the Stations of the Cross. The nice and simple craftsmanship of the chapels underlines the power of the story they tell. You can find inspiration for your stay on the page accommodation Nitra. Be sure to also visit other attractions in Nitra. They are truly interesting. Nitriansky hrad, Botanická záhrada Nitra, Nitrianska galéria, Svoradova jaskyňa, Dražovský kostolík, or Chránená krajinná oblasť Ponitrie are just a few of them. Where will you head first?

Divadlo Andreja Bagara Nitra

Divadlo Andreja Bagara Nitra

Nitra

Among the significant personalities who contributed to the development of art is also the artist Andrej Bagar, after whom the theater in Nitra is named. Divadlo Andreja Bagara v Nitre belongs among one of the largest and most modern buildings in Slovakia, where you can watch amazing artistic performances of our professional actors.

The history of the theater began to be written back in 1833, when the first Nitra theater managed to welcome up to 360 visitors into its premises. The building of this theater stood here until a bomb strike destroyed it during World War II. However, even these wartime conditions did not prevent the spread of culture, and the theater artists moved into the premises of the TJ Sokol gym. The activities of the theater persisted here for more than 60 years. In 1979, the actors returned back to the Nitrianske krajové divadlo, which was named after Andrej Bagar.

The theater currently focuses mainly on drama, but its premises can be transformed for performances of opera, operetta, and ballet. It consists of two halls,  one with a capacity of 577 seats and the second, smaller one, which is an experimental studio for a 150-member audience. In the repertoire of this theater, you will find musicals in addition to drama plays. In the early evening hours, its large hall regularly fills up with people in beautiful gowns, craving an artistic experience and at the same time relaxation from the worries of everyday days.

The theater world is not only about acting, it is also about education. A library that operates directly on the premises of the theater serves these purposes. Students, amateur ensembles, as well as the general public can study dramatic texts and specialized literature here. This library is the only library in Slovakia specializing in theater and drama outside of Bratislava. It has more than 6,000 titles in its collection.

On the theater stage, you can also experience various performances of musical bodies, ensembles, broadcasts of television recordings, or shows. Festivals, which are also attended by visitors and theater artists from abroad, are popular formats as well. Among the most significant is the international theater festival Divadelná Nitra. A theater restaurant and a café, where you will find a diverse offer of food and drinks, are also available on the premises of the theater. Their services are also utilized when organizing formal receptions.

Enriched with new unforgettable experiences from the performance, you can head to your homes. In case of a longer stay, we can recommend accommodation near Divadlo Andreja Bagara. With fresh energy for the new day, you can also visit other interesting places in Nitra. Skanzen Slovenského poľnohospodárskeho múzea Nitra

Skanzen Slovenského poľnohospodárskeho múzea Nitra

Nitra

Skanzen falls under the auspices of the Slovenské poľnohospodárske múzeum, which is based in the city of Nitra. The museum has a total area of more than 30 ha, of which the skanzen spans an area of 17 ha, and seamlessly connects to the permanent exhibitions in the indoor space. In addition to the exhibition spaces, the Nitra museum includes a library, the Nitrianska poľná železnica, and the aforementioned skanzen.

The skanzen is a permanent exhibition that opened its first 6 exhibitions in 1984 on the occasion of the Agrokomplex ´84 exhibition. This happened two years after the initial research, when various types of farm buildings from all over Slovakia dating from the 19th to the 20th century were selected. Subsequently, their copies began to be built starting in 1982, and although they are copies on the outside, their interior furnishings are original. The scope of the exhibition is truly large, with a diverse range of structures located here. A distillery, a flax and machine oil press, a dairy, a school, a stone and roller mill, an oil-seed pounding shed, a winter stable, a seed cleaner, a shepherd's hut, a bakery, a vineyard watchmaker's hut, a roller and hammer hemp stamping mill, haylofts, a fulling mill, beehives, an early medieval peasant homestead, and a symbolic cemetery.

Of course, it also includes a general store, a historic shop from the first half of the 20th century. On the occasion of announced events, traditional chicory coffee is served to visitors for tasting. At the same time, demonstrations of oil pressing, hemp fiber crushing, and flatbread baking take place.

The area of the skanzen also conceals the narrow-gauge Nitrianska poľná železnica complete with full technical equipment, which has officially operated since its first ride in 1985. It is the longest-preserved field railway in the territory of Slovakia. You can view various types of carriages, observation cars, covered cars from Korytnica, a railway turntable from Radošina, and last but not least, a depot with three steam locomotives and one diesel-electric locomotive. A 1.6 km long loop connects the skanzen with the Agrokomplex Nitra exhibition grounds.

Whether you decide to visit the skanzen during the annual exhibition or at a time when there are significantly fewer people there, you are guaranteed a great experience in any case. Agriculture was an inseparable part of our country's history, and the exhibition of the Nitra open-air museum will help you get closer to understanding its past. We recommend booking your overnight stay on the accommodation Nitra website so that your trip experience is comprehensive, including getting to know the surrounding area.

Kráľová

Galanta

Vodná nádrž Kráľová is located on the border of the Trnava and Nitra regions between the towns of Sereď and Šaľa. This reservoir lies on the Váh River, and like other Váh reservoirs, it was built to regulate water in the longest Slovak river. Vodné dielo Kráľová is also called the Kaskády water reservoir. It is a popular spot for cyclists, fishermen, and people who enjoy relaxation by the water.

Nádrž Kráľová and the hydroelectric power plant bearing the same name were put into operation in 1985. In addition to its use as a power plant, gravel and sand were extracted here. Water from the reservoir is also used for irrigation, and the dam naturally serves as flood protection. Approximately every 10 to 15 years, the reservoir is drained for maintenance. It is truly an interesting event, and many visitors come here out of curiosity to observe what lies on its bottom. For example, a large number of freshwater mussels can be found here. Vodné dielo Kráľová is a place with strong wind activity. Since the wind blows here quite often, Vodná nádrž Kráľová is an ideal place for water sports such as windsurfing, yachting, water skiing, or rafting. Swimming in the reservoir is entirely at your own risk, but many residents from surrounding villages such as Šoporňa or Váhovce make use of this option.

Cyclists also love to ride to Vodná nádrž Kráľová because the surrounding area is ideal for long and pleasant flat cycling trips. On the western shore near the recreation area, there is a cycle path that is also used by inline skaters. Other paths around the reservoir are paved and friendly to both hikers and cyclists. The water reservoir is also a Protected Bird Area. Bird lovers come here to observe endangered species and their nesting. You can observe the grey heron and the black-crowned night heron here.

Vodná plocha Kráľová is a fishing ground, and indeed fishermen come here for catches from a wide area. You can catch carp, pike-perch, catfish, and bream here. A quiet environment, beautiful surrounding nature. This is Nádrž Kráľová, offering you proper fishing as it should be. Grab your fishing rods and head out here for a fishing trip; you certainly won't regret it.
