Sivý vrch

Sivý vrch

Zuberec

Sivý vrch is an impressive rocky peak in the Západné Tatry mountains. It is accessible from Bobrovecká dolina in Liptov or from the villages of Zuberec or Huty in Orava. Thanks to its rocky surface, it is considered one of the most beautiful peaks in this part of the Tatras.

Sivý vrch lies at an altitude of 1,805 m above sea level. Here, you will find over 500 species of plants, some of which are truly rare, as they do not occur anywhere else in Slovakia. For example, carnations (pinks), saffron, and gentians grow here. The geomorphological structure and rugged relief make Sivý vrch a paradise for botanists. If you set out for Sivý vrch from the Orava side, it will take you less time. From the village of Huty, the journey to the summit will take you approximately 2.5 hours. Start your hike from the forester's lodge below Biela skala, which is the starting point for many trails in the Západné Tatry mountains.

A steep climb will take you to the crags above Hutnianske sedlo. Here, according to legend, you might discover Jánošík's hidden treasure. Even if you don't find it, no worries. The treasure for you will be the views in all directions, as the path to Sivý vrch continues along the ridge. On this route, you will pass Radové skaly. An interesting natural phenomenon reminiscent of human figures. All the way to the top of Sivý vrch, you will tackle an elevation gain of over 1,000 vertical meters.

An alternative ascent to Sivý vrch is from the Liptov side from the village of Bobrovec, or Jalovec. From the parking lot at Bobrovecká vápenica, you will first head along an asphalt road. Right at the beginning, you can admire the rock faces of the peaks Mních and Sokol. The hiking trail will then lead you to Chata pod Náružím. The residents of Bobrovec value it greatly because it was built with their own hands by local volunteers, and almost every family in Bobrovec contributed to it. Today, it is managed by the municipality, and local hut keepers rotate there. This route is somewhat longer. You will reach Sivý vrch in approximately 4 hours. On the way down, you can also make a loop over the peak Babky (1,566 m a.s.l.), which is particularly popular with photographers due to its panoramic views.

In both cases, the hike can be managed by intermediate hikers. However, such a trip is not entirely suitable for small children due to the length of the route, steep sections, loose rock near the top, and, in the case of the ascent from the Orava side, several chains. Therefore, do not forget sturdy footwear, plenty of fluids, and be sure to check the weather forecast before the hike. In the rain, the trails are very slippery and sections can be dangerous. During sunny weather, however, you will not be able to get enough of the surrounding beauty.

Majestic Sivý vrch is a dominant feature of the Západné Tatry mountains and a popular destination for tourists. Babia hora is also nicknamed the queen of the Beskids. It is the highest peak of the Oravské Beskydy mountain range. It is located in the cadastral area of the village of Oravská Polhora, approximately 18 kilometers from Námestovo. Pope John Paul II also fell in love with climbing it, and you can find his commemorative plaque at the summit of Babia hora. He climbed Babia hora several times, back when he was still the Archbishop of Krakow. This moderately demanding hike will surely enchant you as well.

Babia hora stands at an altitude of 1,725 meters above sea level and you will reach its summit in approximately 3.5 hours. The elevation gain you will overcome is around 900 meters. An interesting fact is that it lies on the border with Poland. Therefore, you may also meet Polish tourists here who call it Babia Góra. However, the route from the Polish side is steeper and more demanding.

You can reach Babia hora along the hiking trail from Oravská Polhora starting at the Slaná voda locality. What was once a spa is now a starting point for hikers. At the same time, you will find a cottage with a restaurant and a parking lot here. The hiking path continues through Hviezdoslavova alej and proceeds to Hviezdoslavova horáreň, also called Hájovňa pod Babou horou. This is where the poet P. O. Hviezdoslav once created and drew inspiration. Slovakia's first literary museum dedicated to a writer is located here. The Hájnikova žena exposition is managed by the Oravské múzeum, and in addition to it, we can also find the memorial house of the writer Milo Urban here.

On the route to Babia hora, you will find several viewpoints, resting places, wooden shelters, and lookout towers. Be sure not to miss the Štaviny lookout tower. From it, you will enjoy views in all directions. You can see, for example, Kubínska hoľa as well.

Babia hora is truly set in exceptional nature. Forests alternate with primeval forest, dwarf pine, and alpine meadows. The educational trail is enriched with boards about Orava flora and fauna. You can learn that the Chránená krajinná oblasť Horná Orava (Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area) is a habitat for the brown bear and the rare bird species, the western capercaillie.

Veľký Rozsutec

Veľký Rozsutec

Terchová

Veľký Rozsutec is a very prominent peak of the Malá Fatra, a sub-unit of the Krivánska Malá Fatra. It towers to an altitude of 1,609.7 m a. s. l. Its height, but certainly also its shape, helped it become a symbol of the region where the most famous highwayman Juraj Jánošík operated, and actually of the entire Malá Fatra. As the chočský príkrov gradually thrust over the softer layers of the krížňanský príkrov, this majestic peak was formed. Its summit and the surrounding rock cities, which are the largest in the territory of Slovakia, were formed by erosion.

The locality where this majestic hill is located falls into the Žilinský kraj. It is at the boundary of the Žilina and Dolný Kubín districts, extending into the cadastral territory of the villages of Párnica and Terchová, and marginally also Zázrivá.

It is said that Veľký Rozsutec is a kind of chest of accumulated treasures of the Slovak national hero Juraj Jánošík, which he hid there. Purportedly, only someone whose nature resembles that of Jánošík will find and dig them up. That is, someone who does not betray their ideals just for anything.

Veľký Rozsutec is rightly considered one of the most beautiful peaks in all of Slovakia, and it certainly has quite a lot of competition. This is undoubtedly assisted by its location in the protected nature reserve Rozsutec, but especially by the fabulous view that you will see from the summit. Indeed, judge for yourself, from above you will see Malý Rozsutec, Veľký Choč, Chleb, Stoh, the mountain ranges of Kysuce, Orava, and the peaks of the Západné Tatry. In addition, you will find yourself surrounded by unique and truly rare species of fauna and flora, as the locality ranks among the richest in Slovakia from a botanical perspective. And as if that were not enough, Veľký Rozsutec is also depicted on the logo of the Národný park Nízke Tatry.

When you reach the summit, sit there for a while and soak in the atmosphere. So many shades of green on the hills and so many shades of blue in the background. That beauty cannot be described in words. The views will charge you with energy, and you will have plenty to spare. Before descending, do not forget to take a photo by the cross; it is almost a tradition there.

The hike to Veľký Rozsutec ranks among the more demanding ones; a good level of fitness and ideally regular physical activity are certainly necessary. Given that the hill is located in a nature reserve, there is a seasonal closure from March 1 to June 15, which must be respected and observed. Instead, plan your hike for winter, for instance, when Rozsutec is truly magnificent, or alternatively for autumn, when nature in Jánošíkove diery turns into a painter and the trees play with all colors. Or will you take advantage of the period of the well-known and expected Malá Fatra inversions? It is entirely up to you.

Your feet will lead you to the summit via one of the following trails. Following the green tourist trail, you will start from Štefanová via the Medziholie saddle. Along the blue tourist trail, you can go from Párnica via the Medziholie saddle or from Terchová via Jánošíkove diery and the Medzirozsutce saddle. Finally, there is the red tourist trail along the main ridge, which leads from Zázrivá via the Medzirozsutce saddle or from the Medziholie saddle, where multiple trails subsequently intersect.

Coming to the region of Juraj Jánošík and not climbing Veľký Rozsutec would truly be a missed opportunity for an amazing trip. If we have inspired you enough, do not hesitate and directly book accommodation near Veľký Rozsutec. Choose accommodation Terchová and accommodation Štefanová on our pages. See for yourself whether you will dare to take on this unforgettable hike or if it will suffice for you to visit the attractions around Terchová.

Chleb

Chleb

Terchová

The hike to the peak of Chleb is one of the most popular hiking routes in Malá Fatra. At an elevation of 1,646 m a.s.l., it holds third place among the peaks of this mountain range. Thanks to its easy accessibility, it is a suitable destination for trips even for families with smaller children or seniors. However, more experienced hikers will also find plenty to enjoy, as they can try longer and more demanding hiking trails from Terchová as well as from Šútovo.

So, what are the options for the ascent? For leisure hikers and adults bringing their little ones, we recommend taking the cable car that runs from Chata Vrátna to Snilovské sedlo. From there, a pleasant, approximately 40-minute walk awaits you along the red-marked trail with a very gentle incline. Below the peak, the Chata pod Chlebom mountain hut will be a welcome sight, offering a place to relax and purchase refreshments. Of course, you can also opt for the walking route, which takes 3 hours from the valley of Vrátna dolina via Snilovské sedlo to Chleb. Demanding hikers may be drawn to the ascent from the side of Šútovo and Kráľovany. This trail starts in the Rieka area and continues through the valley of Šútovská dolina, past the Šútovský vodopád waterfall, Mojžišove pramene springs, Kopiská, Sedlo pod Hromovým pass, and finally to the long-sought Chleb. The climb takes 4 and a half hours, with an elevation gain of 1,223 meters. However, when covered in snow, the route is difficult to traverse.

The peak of Chleb is part of a national nature reserve. Rare plants and animals can be found here, with protected dwarf pine communities and alpine meadows being particularly significant. At first glance, you will be captivated by the distinctive rock cliffs, gorges, and stone seas. Beautiful views of the surrounding landscape open up from the summit itself.

Chleb is accessible year-round. While spring, summer, and colorful autumn offer high-quality hiking and the chance to discover the nature of Malá Fatra, in winter the area offers excellent skiing. Here, you can try one of the steepest ski slopes in Malá Fatra – Oštiepková mulda. Additionally, the nearby ski resort Vrátna Free Time Zone is open for up to 4 months a year.

If the opportunity for hiking or skiing in this area has caught your interest, book accommodation near the peak of Chleb and make the most of a long weekend to explore the entire Národný park Malá Fatra. If you love nature, do not miss the hike to Veľký Kriváň and take in the sights of the Šútovský vodopád. Alternatively, draw inspiration from the chalets and picturesque wooden houses, and book accommodation in Terchová. The Socha Juraja Jánošíka monument and the Kalvária v Terchovej calvary await you here. There are truly many ways to spend your free time around the peak of Chleb, so do not hesitate and plan your trip today.
