The museum as such was established in 1965. Its original seat was in Oravský Podzámok. The museum's work focused primarily on collecting and research activities. Following several relocations and a reconstruction, the Oravská galéria opened to the public in 1995 in the Župný dom in Dolný Kubín.

The gallery is also unique because its collection contains more than 8,500 works across eight art disciplines divided into five thematic circles. One of the circles that will catch your interest is traditional folk fine art, where you will notice many paintings on glass, stone, and wooden polychrome sculptures. Another highly valuable circle is old art from the 15th to the 19th centuries, featuring medieval panel paintings, baroque sculpture, and icons. Do not miss the circle of Slovak fine art from the 20th century either, which includes a numerous collection of works by Galanda or other paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs from this period. To ensure you have plenty of choices, you also have sections of outsider art and foreign fine art at your disposal.

Within the gallery, exhibitions are also operated on Slanický ostrov umenia or at Galéria Márie Medveckej in Tvrdošín. Throughout the year, you can come to the gallery premises and reflect. You will notice various details, learn more about many artistic movements, and soothe your soul. There is truly plenty to choose from, given that more than 635 exhibitions have already taken place on the gallery premises. Every exhibition, creative workshop for children and youth, concert, or theatrical performance has its own charm. Whether you are a family or a group of seniors, you will always find something to your liking here.
