Lanový park Tarzania Jasná

Demänovská Dolina

Set out to the Demänovská dolina valley and discover the world-renowned resort Jasná. This unique place, visited by tourists in both winter and summer, conceals another adrenaline attraction in Liptov. We present to you the Lanový park Tarzania Jasná rope park. Take a family trip and enjoy plenty of fun at the rope park. A total of 739 m of various rope obstacles await you here in the tree crowns.

Perhaps you did not know that the original Tarzania Jasná was destroyed in 2004 by a windstorm. The new rope park is built at Záhradky just a short distance from the parking lot below the Hotel SKI. Enjoy climbing through obstacles at a height of 4 – 7 m above the ground. Come and experience the magic of the forest environment and test your fitness on three routes. Adults can choose to select the longest and most difficult (red) route with a length of 320 m or take the shorter and somewhat easier (blue) route, which is 211 m long. For children under 150 cm, a children's route measuring 76 m is prepared. You can assist your children during their great adrenaline experience from the ground, as the obstacles are located at a low height.

Throw any worries to the wind. We assure you that this attraction is completely safe. Willing instructors will train you and equip you with mandatory gear. For maximum safety, you are secured by a safety rope the entire time. If you have worked up an appetite after this unusual experience, the Reštaurácia 3 domky restaurant, located just 400 m from the rope park, will take care of your hungry tummies.

We believe that you will make use of our tip for a trip to the Lanový park Tarzania Jasná rope park and set out to discover other great attractions in Liptov. Visit the Tatralandia aquapark and let yourself be pampered in thermal pools that are in operation all year round. You can stay directly within the complex, where you can choose from cozy cottages and chalets. If you have decided to visit Jasná during the winter season, you will experience a great skiing trip in the largest Jasná ski resort, where the World Cup Jasná regularly takes place. And if you are lucky and are in the right place at the right time, you might even see our most successful skier Petra Vlhová training here. Do not waste money unnecessarily and take advantage of our offer of cheap accommodation in the Nízke Tatry mountains.

Vrbické pleso

Vrbické pleso

Demänovská Dolina

Vrbické pleso, which adorns the Demänovská dolina, is the largest natural lake in the Nízke Tatry. This body of water at an altitude of 1,113 meters above sea level is of glacial moraine origin and thus resembles tarns in the Vysoké Tatry. At its deepest point, a depth of 8 meters was measured. The lake has been a nature monument since 1975 and is currently protected by the fifth, i.e., highest, level of protection.

The walk starts in the village of Demänovská Dolina at the Jasná - Biela Púť signpost, and it is easy to park nearby. A yellow-marked trail leads from the signpost to the tarn, taking only about 5 minutes to reach it. Around the lake, which measures 115 meters in length and 62 meters in width, runs an undemanding hiking trail. Walking it takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on your walking pace or how long you sit on the benches and admire the photogenic mountain surroundings. It is an ideal walk for families with children. Information boards inform tourists about the origin of the tarn as well as its fauna. Benches by the lake are a matter of course, and several gazebos stand here as well. A playground has been built here for the youngest tourists.

Vrbické pleso does not have to be your final destination. Interesting hiking trails start right from it. It is possible to climb to the Rozhľadňa na Ostredku or to Krakova hoľu. The yellow trail leads from the tarn to Tri Vody or all the way to Sedlo Poľany, while the blue trail leads tourists to the Demänovská jaskyňa slobody.

Vrbické pleso will certainly not be the only place in this region that you plan to visit. If you are planning a longer holiday in Liptov, our accommodation offer will certainly come in handy. Right in the Demänovská dolina, just a few steps from Vrbické pleso, you will find hotels, budget guesthouses, comfortable apartments, and cozy cottages.

Jasná Chopok sever - Záhradky

Jasná Chopok sever - Záhradky

Demänovská Dolina

Do you love winter and skiing in particular? In that case, you have almost certainly heard of Jasná. A ski resort where your dreams of the perfect ski holiday become reality. Tens of kilometers of slopes, ski lifts, and cable cars on par with the Alps. You definitely shouldn't miss out on such an experience.

A main road leads to Jasná, alongside which there are several large park-and-ride car parks. Each of them is connected to a chairlift, so it doesn't matter where you park. You can enjoy the entire resort from any car park. If you don't feel like going all the way to the top, you can stop in the area called Záhradky.

Get out of the car, put on your ski boots, step into your skis, and head straight to the slopes. Jasná is exceptional because it offers long kilometers of trails of all difficulty levels. If you are an intermediate skier, you will find plenty to enjoy in Záhradky. Alternatively, you can warm up and stretch your muscles here before tackling steeper slopes. In Záhradky, you will mostly find medium-difficulty (red) slopes, but there is also a blue, least demanding trail.

One ski lift and two modern chairlifts lead directly from Záhradky. Equipment with windshield covers protecting against the wind is taken for granted. One of the chairlifts leads to Rovná hoľa, a quieter yet even more beautiful corner of Jasná. The second one takes you directly into the heart of the resort, to Priehyba, at an altitude of 1,342 meters above sea level. This is where the famous funitel funicular/cable car is located, leading all the way to the top of Chopok. From Záhradky, you can reach an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level with just a single transfer. Another chairlift runs above Záhradky, coming from the previous park-and-ride car park at Lúčky.

If you head from Záhradky to Rovná hoľa, you have a choice of two slopes to ski back down. Intermediate skiers will choose the red one, and beginners the blue one. If that isn't enough for you, you can extend your descent all the way to Lúčky. The cable car to Priehyba is for more demanding skiers. From there, you can return to Záhradky via either two red slopes or one black slope for the most experienced skiers.

Down at the bottom of the slopes, a full range of facilities awaits you: snack bars, a restaurant, a rental shop, a ski school, and a sports clothing store. In short, complete equipment and services. And remember, Záhradky is just an entry point to the resort center, where even more awaits you.

Finding accommodation in Záhradky will not be a problem. Jasná offers cozy mountain cabins, luxurious guesthouses, as well as affordable private rooms and tourist hostels around every corner. It's entirely up to you what you choose. You will truly find everything here.

Jasná Chopok sever - Otupné

Jasná Chopok sever - Otupné

Demänovská Dolina

Jasná is the largest ski resort for miles around. But if you think a beginner skier won't find a place to ski here, you are mistaken. It offers something for everyone. For professionals, freeriders, ski mountaineers, intermediate skiers, but also for beginner skiers and families with small children. If you belong to the last category, pay attention.

A short distance from the ticket office where you buy your passes, there is a modern and beautiful hotel. In front of it stands the valley station of the cable car. It will certainly catch your eye immediately upon arrival; its black and orange design is simply unmistakable. And it is thanks to it that you will discover the high-quality slopes of Otupné.

The cable car will comfortably take you from an altitude of 1,141 meters above sea level to nearly 300 meters higher, where an approximately 2 km long slope begins. The cable car, named after the adjacent hotel, Grandjet, is fast, comfortable, and thanks to the orange glass, you will feel like it is beautifully sunny outside. Even when it is cloudy.

The slope from Brhliská to Otupné is marked in blue, so it is suitable for beginners or children. It is sufficiently wide, and you do not have to worry about the safety of your little one. A few meters of the slope are red, of intermediate difficulty, but this section can be bypassed by a gentler slope. Moreover, you will find ski schools in the resort, and if you do not dare to go alone, you can head to Otupné with an experienced instructor.

In addition to the modern cable car, you will also find short lifts here. They come in handy when you don't want to return all the way down to the parking lots. At Otupné, there is a unique view of the massive rocky ridge of the Nízke Tatry mountains, the Chopok peak itself, and, of course, the Derešský kotol basin.

Until now, it may have seemed that if you are a more experienced skier, you have no reason to go to Otupné. Wrong. The first reason is the breathtaking natural scenery all around, and the second is the local Snowpark. It is the real deal for adrenaline seekers. You will find high snow ramps, jumps, rails, and various obstacles here. From small jumps for beginners to several-meter-long jumps for the best. If "freeride" is your middle name, you will let loose like a small child at Otupné.

Jasná offers slopes for every group of skiers, and Otupné is an example of this. It is focused mainly on beginners and absolute extremists who love adrenaline. Are you in one of these groups? Then you would want to stay somewhere, because one day at Jasná is not enough. Trust us! In that case, we offer you a luxury hotel right by the cable car, plenty of hotels in the immediate vicinity, or tourist hostels directly on the slopes. Some may prefer cozy cabins scattered throughout the entire Demänovská dolina valley. The options are more than wide; it just depends on you.

Drevený muž Dúbrava

Drevený muž Dúbrava

Dúbrava (okres Liptovský Mikuláš)

In the Liptov village of Dúbrava, nestled in the picturesque nature of Nízke Tatry, the Guardian of the Forest (Strážca lesa) stands guard over the entrance to the forests and mines in Dúbravská dolina. It is a wooden statue soaring to a height of 5 m. To movie fans of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it resembles the walking tree character "Ent", while to fans of Guardians of the Galaxy, it recalls the character "Groot". It was created by a pair of English artists.

Rooted to the ground, the statue is made almost entirely of wood, only subtly supported by a metal structure. It symbolizes Perun, the Slavic god of thunder and lightning. In his hand, he holds a burning torch, and his feet are covered with stones. The path leading to him is well-trodden, so you certainly will not get lost. It is quite possible that during your walk you will meet families with strollers or seniors. The terrain is easy and the route is relatively short.

In the past, mining activity flourished in Dúbravská dolina, leaving many residents with health consequences, but above all, it was responsible for one of the largest ecological disasters in Slovakia in 2019. The wooden guardian stands here as a sort of barrier between nature and man. He is a protector of both the forest and nature. He defends them and stands here as a warning to anyone who would consciously want to destroy them.

Not far from the wooden guardian are the famous Dúbravské bane, which were strategic for Czechoslovakia in their time. They were the highest-altitude antimony mines in Central Europe. Mining in them completely ceased in 1992. An old mining train stands at their entrance. However, its condition is just as dilapidated as the surrounding area of the mines. Nevertheless, a beautiful spruce forest leads to them.

Similarly beautiful forests can be found all around the area. Liptov is a very popular tourist destination, and every visitor will find something to love here. If you too want a photo with the wooden man of Dúbrava, plan a nice extended weekend in Liptov. For that, you need to find quality accommodation near the Wooden Man. You will find plenty of options, for example, on the page accommodation Liptovský Mikuláš. To truly enjoy your trip to the fullest, get inspired by our tips for trips in Liptov.

Forget about boring walks where kids keep asking when you’ll reach the destination. In Jasná, in the area between Priehyba and Koliesko, Slide Park awaits adventurers both young and old. It is a place where mountain nature turns into a giant playground. The system of seven toboggans is not just about speed. Each slide represents a different inhabitant of the Nízke Tatry mountains, from a majestic eagle to a playful marmot.

Seven slides, seven animal stories

Forget boredom! This route will guide you through seven unique slides, each representing a different inhabitant of the Tatras. Sometimes you will slide down like a swift lynx, other times like a majestic eagle or even bear Max himself. In total, more than 127 meters of fun rides await you, which will immediately draw children into the action. Along with the "speed tests" on the slides, little explorers will find educational panels with stories about our animals at every slide. And to make it even more interesting for children, just scan the QR code and the animal’s story will come to life right on your phone. Moreover, cable cars will take you comfortably to the attraction, so you can focus solely on having fun.

The ideal family morning in the mountains

Slide Park is the perfect place for a family trip, where kids can burn off energy and parents can enjoy the views of the Nízke Tatry mountains. To ensure the ride is safe and enjoyable for everyone, the toboggans are adapted to different age groups. There is a minimum height requirement of 100 cm for riding alone. Thanks to this, both preschoolers and school children can enjoy the attraction.

What else to experience nearby

Jasná is a gateway to a world of adventures. If you have little cyclists at home, the nearby Bike Park offers trails for both beginners and daredevils. For families who prefer hiking, the Nízke Tatry mountains are an endless source of tourist trails. And if you happen to encounter bad weather, the underground kingdom of Demänovská jaskyňa slobody or the ice cave is a great alternative that never disappoints.

Jasná offers accommodation for everyone, whether you are looking for luxury or a cozy mountain setting. Hotels directly by the slopes will offer you a view of the mountains in the morning and cable cars just a stone's throw from the door. However, if you are looking for peace and quiet, Demänovská Dolina is full of apartments and traditional cottages that are perfect for evening relaxation after a day spent in nature. Rozhľadňa na Súšave

Rozhľadňa na Súšave

Veľké Borové

A bird's-eye view of our most beautiful mountain ranges is offered by Rozhľadňa na Súšave. The tourist observation tower with an impressive height of 16.5 meters has been standing since 2013 on Súšava hill in Skorušinské vrchy between the villages of Malé Borové and Veľké Borové in the Liptovský Mikuláš district. The easiest route to the observation tower leads from Malé Borové along the red hiking trail toward Veľké Borové. The trail is well-marked with hiking signs. About 15 minutes before reaching the destination, it is necessary to turn onto the orange trail ascending directly to the tower. After passing through a dense coniferous forest, a massive wooden structure suddenly appears before you. Save your strength for climbing a series of ladders all the way to its top. And then it happens. A breathtaking view, right out of a Liptov postcard, will open up before you.

The route to the tourist observation tower, due to its length and difficulty, is manageable even for younger children and less fit hikers. More experienced ones can reach the observation tower itself in approximately 30 minutes of brisk walking. If you turn your journey to the tower into a pleasant stroll, you can enjoy the magnificent view after about an hour. The trail itself along the ridge offers a lovely view of Roháče. You can also reach the observation tower from the village of Chlebnice, though that route leads along unmarked paths.

If you are among the lovers of mountain hiking and walks in picturesque nature, be sure not to miss a trip to Rozhľadňa na Súšave during your vacation in Liptov. You can combine it with a visit to Vodné mlyny Oblazy set into the beautiful natural scenery of Kvačianska dolina. Kúpele Lúčky

Kúpele Lúčky

Lúčky (okres Ružomberok)

Kúpele Lúčky spa is located in the village of the same name, in the picturesque area below the Tatras, in the Liptov region. It is situated where the Ráztočná dolina valley meets the Liptovská kotlina basin, beneath the majestic Chočské vrchy mountains. A quiet environment full of greenery, consisting mainly of spruce forests, clean air, and the healing power of a natural mineral spring—this is a great combination for which visitors from all over Slovakia travel here. The spa helps patients with indicated oncological diseases, digestive system diseases, metabolic and endocrine gland disorders, non-tuberculous respiratory diseases, nervous system diseases, musculoskeletal system diseases, gynecological diseases, and occupational diseases.

The history of Kúpele Lúčky dates back to 1712. The spa industry built upon folk healing. Life at the springs in Lúčky began to flourish around 1760. To provide entertainment alongside treatment, an inn with a stable was built here. In 1864, Lúčky was rebuilt into a spa house. In 1872, the spa gained a new owner, who ensured its comprehensive reconstruction. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Kúpele Lúčky was visited by international clientele from the USA, Romania, Bohemia, Tsarist Russia, Vienna, and Budapest. In 1912, it applied for inclusion in the list of medicinal spas of the Kingdom of Hungary.

After World War II, the spa was nationalized. The 1960s were marked by the beginning of new construction. Despite building new beds, their number was still insufficient due to enormous interest in treatment. Therefore, new spa houses, including social areas, were added. The balneotherapy department received its current form after a reconstruction in 1998. The modern AQUA – VITAL Park Lúčky was built in 2008.

To provide high-quality treatment, a qualified team is needed in addition to the gift of nature in the form of a mineral spring. Kúpele Lúčky has a roster of true experts, including doctors, nurses, and other staff. The individual medical procedures will take care of the rest. Balneotherapy is suitably complemented by tub baths in mineral carbonated water, mineral pearl baths, whirlpool baths, and additive mineral baths. Paraffin and peat—peloids—are used for wraps. The massage offer consists of classic, underwater, reflex, hot stone, honey, and bamboo massages, as well as whirlpool massages, Scotch showers, and lymph drainage. Electrotherapy is also utilized in Lúčky. Electrotherapy consists of diathermy, diatron, diadynamic currents, endomed, TENS, magnetotherapy, biolaser, therapeutic ultrasound, and galvanotherapy. Light therapy uses bioptron, mountain sun, sanotherm, and solux. Other procedures include intrador, physical education, swimming in the pool, psychorelaxation, autotraction, inhalation, oxygen therapy, and vitamin therapy. The spa also offers premium beauty treatments using natural cosmetics.

When you see someone sitting on a bench under wooden wings, between the cheerful duo of Maťko and Kubko, do not disturb them. They have gathered internal courage and sat on the Lavička vďaky a prianí (Bench of Gratitude and Wishes). This is a place intended for clearing one's thoughts. It is a space where a person can, in their mind or aloud, express their deepest wishes and give the universe the opportunity to grant them. The bravest write them on paper and insert them into the slot on the wing. The bench is a quiet companion that will listen to your troubles. Relieve your soul; tell it what is bothering you. Even this can significantly contribute to your treatment. If you have come to the spa, you probably need help with something. It may be your health that needs improvement. The energy you need to recharge. The soul you need to heal. Or the internal sadness you need to process.

A visit to the wellness center is very popular. AQUA – VITAL Park offers an indoor pool with warm, mineral, healing water. The outdoor pools feature many attractions. Counter-currents, a water mushroom, massage jets, water spouts, and air loungers—you can try all of this in the outdoor recreational pool. There is also a warm seated pool nearby, offering relaxation in healing water full of minerals. Leisure attractions such as a children's playground and a volleyball court are a matter of course. In addition to the pools, it is worth entering the sauna world. What you try inside is up to you. The offer includes a Finnish sauna, menthol sauna, tepidarium, Kneipp bath, and a Roman bath containing natural inhalation essences. You will then be cooled down by a turbo shower or a rain shower. Another wellness area is located in Dependance Liptov. Try the saltwater jacuzzi, saunas (Finnish, infra), and cool off in a tub. Thirdly, you can also take advantage of the wet and dry salt cave. Lie down, close your eyes, listen to relaxing music, and breathe deeply.

You can spend your free time between individual procedures with pleasant seating in the café. It offers tasty snacks and interesting refreshments. Another option is to work out in the fitness center, which offers various machines and sports equipment. The view of the beautiful surrounding nature will constantly recharge your energy during exercise. The spa also offers other additional services that you will surely appreciate. Hairdressing, cosmetics, manicure, pedicure—which will you use? If you are on a relaxation or health stay, you should do it with everything that comes with it!

And that includes exploring the surroundings. Visitors to Kúpele Lúčky cannot praise it enough, as it offers countless leisure opportunities. Just a short walk, and you will find yourself at the beautiful Lúčanský vodopád waterfall, which is a frequent destination for locals and tourists alike. The falling water has a calming effect, while the surrounding nature provides energy. We recommend visiting Liptovský hrad castle in Kalameny. The surroundings of the Liptovská Mara reservoir are also interesting. When you are there, definitely visit the Bešeňovské travertíny travertine terraces and the Archeoskanzen Havránok archaeological park. A nice walk also awaits you around the Vodopád Červené piesky waterfall or the prehistoric settlement Mokrý kút. If you are in the mood for hiking, head to Veľký Choč. History lovers will also like the Kubínyiovský kaštieľ manor house, while children will enjoy Kinderlandia and Babyland. You can go skiing in Ski Park Malinô Brdo.

Only one thing is missing—accommodation near Kúpele Lúčky. You will get inspiration for choosing it on the page for accommodation in Lúčky. You will be guaranteed to be close to the spa, with great accessibility to the surroundings. We believe that you will enjoy your stay and leave it healthier and happier.

Thanks to its healing power, it relieves pain, has a soothing, anti-inflammatory effect, and promotes relaxation.

The thermal pools, together with the sauna world, form a harmonious whole. The favorable effects of saunas have been known since time immemorial. The hot air in the sauna induces sweating, thereby promoting the elimination of harmful substances. Take a deep breath in the menthol sauna and the Roman bath with inhalable essences. Natural essential oils will clear your upper airways, boost your immunity, and serve as great prevention against colds. For complete detoxification of the body, opt for a stay in the Finnish sauna. Sivý vrch

Sivý vrch

Zuberec

Sivý vrch is an impressive rocky peak in the Západné Tatry mountains. It is accessible from Bobrovecká dolina in Liptov or from the villages of Zuberec or Huty in Orava. Thanks to its rocky surface, it is considered one of the most beautiful peaks in this part of the Tatras.

Sivý vrch lies at an altitude of 1,805 m above sea level. Here, you will find over 500 species of plants, some of which are truly rare, as they do not occur anywhere else in Slovakia. For example, carnations (pinks), saffron, and gentians grow here. The geomorphological structure and rugged relief make Sivý vrch a paradise for botanists. If you set out for Sivý vrch from the Orava side, it will take you less time. From the village of Huty, the journey to the summit will take you approximately 2.5 hours. Start your hike from the forester's lodge below Biela skala, which is the starting point for many trails in the Západné Tatry mountains.

A steep climb will take you to the crags above Hutnianske sedlo. Here, according to legend, you might discover Jánošík's hidden treasure. Even if you don't find it, no worries. The treasure for you will be the views in all directions, as the path to Sivý vrch continues along the ridge. On this route, you will pass Radové skaly. An interesting natural phenomenon reminiscent of human figures. All the way to the top of Sivý vrch, you will tackle an elevation gain of over 1,000 vertical meters.

An alternative ascent to Sivý vrch is from the Liptov side from the village of Bobrovec, or Jalovec. From the parking lot at Bobrovecká vápenica, you will first head along an asphalt road. Right at the beginning, you can admire the rock faces of the peaks Mních and Sokol. The hiking trail will then lead you to Chata pod Náružím. The residents of Bobrovec value it greatly because it was built with their own hands by local volunteers, and almost every family in Bobrovec contributed to it. Today, it is managed by the municipality, and local hut keepers rotate there. This route is somewhat longer. You will reach Sivý vrch in approximately 4 hours. On the way down, you can also make a loop over the peak Babky (1,566 m a.s.l.), which is particularly popular with photographers due to its panoramic views.

In both cases, the hike can be managed by intermediate hikers. However, such a trip is not entirely suitable for small children due to the length of the route, steep sections, loose rock near the top, and, in the case of the ascent from the Orava side, several chains. Therefore, do not forget sturdy footwear, plenty of fluids, and be sure to check the weather forecast before the hike. In the rain, the trails are very slippery and sections can be dangerous. During sunny weather, however, you will not be able to get enough of the surrounding beauty.

Múzeum liptovskej dediny - Pribylina

Múzeum liptovskej dediny - Pribylina

Pribylina

Múzeum liptovskej dediny v Pribyline, which is part of Liptovské múzeum v Ružomberku, has been attracting its visitors since 1991. That is when it opened its doors to the public for the first time, although its construction began much earlier, in 1972. The museum is set in the picturesque nature of Liptov with views of Kriváň and the Western Tatras.

The village faithfully depicts the life of our grandmothers from the turn of the 20th century. The arrangement of dwellings found right here was once characteristic of villages in Liptov with the privileges and rights of small towns. The vast majority of the houses come from the area that was flooded by the Liptovská Mara water reservoir. These are original copies featuring authentic elements and sensitively presented details.

Within the exhibition, visitors are introduced to the life of various social classes of that era. School-age children in particular will enjoy taking a peek into the original, simple village school. However, the landmarks of the open-air museum include the Gothic-Renaissance manor house from Parížovce and the Early Gothic Church of Our Lady from Liptovská Mara.

The open-air museum strives to bring ancient traditions and ways of life closer to modern people through various events. Folklore performances, reconstructions of folk customs and traditions, and themed days are organized here regularly. Shepherds', firefighters', or beekeepers' Sundays, bobbin lace days, harvest thanksgiving, or demonstrations of traditional Liptov cuisine are particularly popular.

During the summer season, riding the Považská lesná železnička railway is a very popular attraction. It consists of preserved tracks from the original route, which was mainly used to transport harvested timber. The exhibition's collection hides gems such as period passenger and freight cars, as well as functional steam and motor locomotives. In the summer season, it is the steam locomotive that pulls the carriage with visitors, who enjoy beautiful views in addition to a fantastic experience, not only of the surrounding nature, but also of the original steel bridge, which comes from the railway's original route.

The open-air museum had long toyed with the idea of making Tatra nature accessible to people who, for various reasons, cannot visit it in person. The result is a new exhibition and relaxation zone. It is a relaxing space friendly to everyone, able-bodied children as well as those with special needs, healthy adults as well as those with various physical or mental disabilities. It is a barrier-free space where navigation is handled through rope handrails, curbs, or information boards in Braille. A new mobile application with an option to switch to sign language and special 3D images of animal species and the Tatra relief are also new features. You can sit in a raptor's nest, curl up in a bear's den, or step onto an observation point with a view of the Western Tatras.

Thanks to the expansion of the ancient village exhibition, we recommend making a full-day trip to the museum. So that you don't have to rush anywhere and can fully enjoy the atmosphere of the place, book accommodation near the open-air museum in Pribylina. Our subpages accommodation Pribylina and accommodation Vavrišovo will help you navigate through various accommodation offers and choose the right one for your stay near this popular open-air museum.

Vrch Chopok

Vrch Chopok

Demänovská Dolina

When people hear "Chopok", most answer without hesitation "Jasná". However, this third-highest peak (2,023.6 m a.s.l.) of the Nízke Tatry mountains offers much more than just great skiing on perfectly groomed slopes. It is located in the geomorphological sub-region of Ďumbierske Tatry, on the main ridge at the border of the Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions, on the boundary between the districts of Brezno and Liptovský Mikuláš.

Chopok is often just a transfer station before continuing a hike further. The most common steps of hikers lead from it to Ďumbier and to Chata M. R. Štefánika, subsequently continuing through Králička to the Čertovica pass. The main peak is located above Kamenná chata pod Chopkom. However, it also has a second, secondary peak located west of the rotunda.

Right near it is a meteorological station. Its measurements, which began on December 1, 1954, provide interesting information not only to tourists. Thanks to it, we know that the average annual temperature at the summit reaches only -1.1 °C. The maximum temperature of 22 °C was recorded on August 9, 2013, and the minimum of -31.5 °C has not been surpassed since January 17, 1963. Moreover, Chopok is considered one of the windiest places in Slovakia. The average wind speed reaches 9.3 m/s, and on April 14, 1988, a speed of up to 51 m/s was measured, which translates to more than 180 km/h!

Chopok is a sought-after peak by tourists in both summer and winter, which it owes not only to its breathtaking panoramic view, but also to its great accessibility. Hikers can comfortably ride up right below the summit by cable car from both the northern and southern sides. The aforementioned circular view captures many mountain ranges of central and northern Slovakia, the Nízke Tatry peaks, and of course, the Vysoké Tatry. If the weather favors you, you will even see the Chočské vrchy, Poľana, Veporské vrchy, Stolické vrchy, Oravské Beskydy with Pilsko and Babia hora, Oravská Magura, Krivánska Fatra, Vtáčnik, and even the Hungarian Kékes.

The youngest tourists love Chopok thanks to the dragon Demián. An impressive statue by the artistic blacksmith Vladimír Eperješi depicts the most powerful guardian of the Demänová treasures. His eyes are inlaid with semi-precious stones, and his scales are hand-forged. His heads spew both fire and smoke, and in the throat of one of them is a copper bell. When you ring it, you will summon good luck. Whether it is a myth or a fact, it is at least worth a try. Embark on a family adventure along the Dračia cesta na Chopok (Dragon Trail to Chopok) and help the little dragon find a happy ending to the dragon story. An adventure diary will accompany you throughout the journey, and a reward awaits the clever ones at the end. And if you do not believe in fairytale dragons, try taking a closer look at the unusual pile of stones at the summit. Do they not remind you of a sleeping dragon?

In winter, the slopes of Chopok are unrivaled among the best in Slovakia. Depending on which side of Chopok you are on, you can choose a resort where you will enjoy great skiing. The northern side offers the resorts Biela púť, Otupné, and Záhradky, while the southern side offers the resorts Srdiečko and Kosodrevina.

Access to Chopok is very good; the easiest way is to board a cable car or chairlift and ride all the way up. However, several hiking trails also lead from the cable cars. Following the blue hiking trail, you will go from Demänovská dolina through Luková, starting the ascent at the popular Vrbické pleso.

Along the green hiking trail from the recreational resort Tále and Trangoška, then along the yellow hiking trail to the summit. Along the red hiking trail, either from the west along the main ridge from Dereše, or from the east also along the main ridge from Ďumbier. The yellow hiking trail leads from Tále through Dereše.

Mountain sun, a great view, superb accessibility. All this applies to the peak Chopok, which, if you have not visited yet, you should definitely fix. Whether in summer or winter, on foot or by cable car, alone or with a great group of friends, we leave that up to you. What you can rely on us for are the pages accommodation Jasná and accommodation Brezno, which contain a wide selection of accommodations so that you can fully enjoy your trip experience without rushing home in the evening.

Národný park Nízke Tatry

Národný park Nízke Tatry

Liptovský Hrádok

Národný park Nízke Tatry, abbreviated as NAPANT, is the largest Slovak national park. It lies in the territory of central Slovakia, extending into three regions - Banská Bystrica, Žilina, and Prešov. The Nízke Tatry are separated by the valleys of the Váh and Hron rivers. Both of these rivers rise beneath Kráľova hoľa, as do the Hnilec and Hornád. The buffer zone of the national park covers the entire Nízke Tatry mountain range. The park currently has an area of 728 km² and a buffer zone of 1,102 km², but upon its establishment in 1978, it covered an area of up to 811 km² with a buffer zone of 1,240 km².

The Nízke Tatry are a unified whole from a geomorphological perspective. However, in terms of geological structure, they are two distinct zones of the central Western Carpathians. The Ďumbier part in the west, also referred to as Ďumbierske Tatry, belongs to the core mountain ranges zone, while the Kráľova hoľa part in the east belongs to the Vepor zone. These two parts are separated by the Čertovica saddle. The highest peak of the Nízke Tatry is Ďumbier with an altitude of 2,043 m above sea level.

Home to many caves and waterfalls

The underground of the limestone-dolomite massifs conceals hundreds of caves; for example, cavers have discovered more than 170 of them in Demänovská dolina, while Jánska dolina is home to the deepest Slovak cave system named Hipmanove jaskyne. The karst area of the Nízke Tatry is, of course, the creation of underground riverbeds. Water works wonders on the surface as well, where one can admire many waterfalls, including the fourth highest in Slovakia, which is Bankovský vodopád with a height of 55 m.

In the Nízke Tatry, one must reckon with a harsh mountain climate. The average January temperature on the ridges reaches -9 °C and in July it does not climb higher than 9°C. Interestingly, the snow cover stays on Chopok for up to 130 days a year. Of the average annual precipitation (1,600 mm), the largest part falls in the form of snow.

Hiking with marmots and chamois

The vast majority of the Národný park Nízke Tatry is covered by forest, most frequently mixed forests where European beech, silver fir, Norway spruce, sycamore and mountain maple, and European ash grow. The dwarf pine zone is not widespread in this mountain range; it was largely removed by human activity. Bilberries and cowberries are most frequently found in these stands. Despite the harsh climate, or precisely because of it, the Nízke Tatry also feature interesting and valuable flora, including the Slovak pasque flower, Soldanella alpina, mountain buttercup, and edelweiss.

The diversity of habitats, the ruggedness of the terrain, as well as the inaccessibility of parts of the mountain range create conditions for a species-rich fauna. Endemic and relic species live here as well. Among the best-known animals of the Nízke Tatry is the Tatra chamois; this species did not originally live in the Nízke Tatry, but 30 individuals from the Vysoké Tatry and Belianske Tatry were artificially released here in the 1970s. In addition to chamois, red and roe deer, wild boars, wolves, lynx, and foxes are abundant here, as well as brown bears, which are the symbol of the Nízke Tatry, rare marmots, and golden eagles.

The Národný park Nízke Tatry offers visitors “great value for money”

Thanks to its area, NAPANT is characterized by a diversity that conceals something for every type of tourist. There are easy hikes for families with children or seniors to choose from. They can take a walk around Vrbické pleso or along the Jakub nad Banskou Bystricou educational trail. Conversely, more demanding hikes include ascents to Chopok, Ďumbier, or Kráľova hoľa. For those who prefer to explore the most interesting places, we recommend visiting the Demänovské jaskyne caves: Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa and Demänovská jaskyňa slobody, Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov, Stanišovská jaskyňa, or Záskočská jaskyňa.

If you want to spend more time in this area and are looking for accommodation near the Národný park Nízke Tatry, you can focus on five districts, Banská Bystrica, Brezno, Ružomberok, Liptovský Mikuláš, and Poprad. In each of them, you will find various types of accommodation; it is up to you whether you decide to stay in a cottage near the forest or choose an apartment in the city center where you can enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of cafes and squares while commuting to nature daily.

Ohnište a Okno

Ohnište a Okno

Liptovský Ján

During your holiday in Liptov, you certainly cannot miss Ohnište and Okno, which tower above the valley of Liptovský Ján. Begin your journey at Stanišovská jaskyňa, where you can comfortably park your car. Your fitness will be tested by the hiking trails and climbs, which after nearly 5 hours of walking will bring you to a majestic karst rock plateau with various abysses and steep cliffs. Your breath will be taken away here, as the views presented to you are gorgeous. Older children with good physical fitness can also handle the hike with you.

At the cave, you will set off along the yellow hiking trail, which takes you climbing through a deep forest to Stanišovské sedlo. Here, the panorama of the surrounding peaks of the Nízke Tatry appears before you for the first time. You will head further towards Sedlo Brtkovica, where along the way you can explore a partisan bunker located just 10 meters from the trail. However, the path to it is very overgrown, so give it a try, perhaps you will be lucky and discover it. You will reach the saddle shortly after a few minutes of walking. Further, you continue along a narrow trail and then steeply upward to the Slemä crossroads, where the wreckage of a World War II airplane lies as well. It is an interesting relic and will surely give you goosebumps. Following the green marker, you continue through a national nature reserve, which the Ohnište mountain massif and its surroundings have rightfully become. You can feel here that human hands do not stand in nature's way.

The main peak of Ohnište lies at an altitude of 1,538 m a.s.l., and below it is Veľká ľadová priepasť, which reaches an incredible depth of 125 m at its lowest point. Okno, which is beautifully visible already from Jánska dolina, is situated near the main peak. It is a unique rock formation whose gate reaches a height of up to 10 meters. Entry directly to Okno itself is prohibited, as it is located in the highest level of nature protection, and various rare vegetation or endangered animal species occur in its vicinity, such as the golden eagle and the Eurasian lynx. After a well-deserved rest and taking in the views, start your descent towards Svidovské sedlo, from where, following the blue marker around Horáreň pred Bystrou, you will get all the way back to the cave where you started the hike.

You will feel the kilometers and serious elevation gain in your legs for quite a while, so you will certainly be pleased that there is no shortage of accommodation near Ohnište and Okno. In Liptovský Ján, there are many pleasant cottages and guesthouses that will surely meet your expectations. Let the bubbles of Termálny prameň Kaďa Liptovský Ján soothe your tired body, and the next day go get inspired for further trips at Park Mini Slovensko. Children and adults alike will enjoy a visit to the nearby Tatralandia aquapark, where they can fully indulge in fun.

Lyžiarske stredisko Račkova dolina

Lyžiarske stredisko Račkova dolina

Pribylina

High mountains are made for hikers, skiers, and all nature lovers in general. One of our most famous mountain ranges is Západné Tatry. Its high peaks are exceptionally attractive to tourists from all over Slovakia. Climbing peaks such as Baníkov or Ostrý Roháč is a dream for many. And right beneath these peaks, you will find the picturesque Račkova dolina, where you can enjoy great skiing.

The valley is located in Západné Tatry. Since Račkova dolina is a popular recreational resort, access to it is very easy. Just a short distance away is the village of Pribylina, known primarily for its famous open-air museum, featuring a tour of traditional dwellings and crafts of the Liptov region's inhabitants.

The beginning of the valley sits at an altitude of 960 meters above sea level, with the top of the resort reaching 1,100 meters above sea level. The ski resort itself is not among the largest or most famous. And that is precisely a huge asset for skiers. You won't find crowds of people, overcrowded slopes, or lines at the ski lifts here.

A pair of ski lifts and a pair of slopes await you here. They are designed for a wide spectrum of skiers, mainly due to the medium difficulty profile of the trails. Their total length is 1.4 km, and the entire resort is equipped with an artificial snowmaking system.

The foothills of Západné Tatry are interesting for more than just downhill skiers. For cross-country skiers, long kilometers of groomed trails are available.

It goes without saying that the ski resort includes supplementary services such as a refreshment kiosk, ski equipment rental, and a comprehensive range of accommodation services.

The nature here is truly beautiful. In the immediate vicinity, there is no shortage of high-quality services and attractions for everyone. A good tip for a trip around Liptov is, for example, Demänovské jaskyne. This region is exceptionally welcoming to relaxation enthusiasts. Visit the modern aquapark in Bešeňová, where an interesting water slide tower has been added, or head to the most famous aquapark in Slovakia, Tatralandia. A variety of pools, water slides, whirlpools, and water jets are the best thing you can treat yourself to after a great day of skiing.

Accommodation options in Račkova dolina are exceptionally wide-ranging. The local campsite is popular, and for more demanding guests, several mountain hotels are at your service. Further accommodation options in the area are offered by the villages in the foothills, where you can choose from various private rentals or guesthouses.

Račkova dolina is a well-known hiking destination, yet its slopes remain relatively undiscovered. If you enjoy undisturbed skiing in beautiful surroundings, you don't have to look any further.

Považská lesná železnica

Považská lesná železnica

Pribylina

Považská lesná železnica is an exhibition of Liptovské múzeum v Ružomberku, located in Múzeum liptovskej dediny v Pribyline. This narrow-gauge railway primarily transported harvested timber. During its golden era, the railway network in the basin of Čierny Váh stretched an impressive 107 km. Design work began in 1912. The main line, which also allowed passenger transport, connected Liptovský Hrádok with Liptovská Teplička, then continued toward the Staníkovo forester's lodge. Trains operated on it until the end of 1972, and during its existence, it was the second longest forest railway in Slovakia.

The railway was extremely popular among locals and tourists alike. So much so that most of its transport components had their own names. People called the train nothing other than "mašinka" (little engine), while the track was colloquially known as "štriečka". The Frajtka draisine, the first passenger carriage Klasa, and the steam locomotives Veľká Maďarka, Malá Maďarka, Barbora, Cifra, Kopil, and Sulika all ran along it. The last-mentioned locomotive is currently located in the exhibition of Múzeum liptovskej dediny v Pribyline, where it is known as Kačena.

At first, preserved tracks from the original route, along with some carriages and locomotives, were moved to the Pribylina open-air museum. The exhibition was static. However, the museum wanted to remain attractive to visitors, so they decided to breathe new life into the old railway. Therefore, thanks to funds obtained from the European Union under the project "Following the Traces of Technical Monuments from Podhale to Liptov," its reconstruction took place in 2018. They completed the track, connecting the lower part of the open-air museum ("village") with its upper part ("depot") over a total length of 950 m. Now, visitors ride along it on historic train sets saved from the original railway.

Although the railway ride is only possible on a shortened track, it certainly doesn't shorten the visitor experience, quite the opposite! During the ride, you will travel back in time. Not only because of the feeling evoked by sitting in an antique type of locomotive, but especially thanks to the view you have during the ride. The railway leads through beautiful natural scenery where you can enjoy the scent of trees, their vibrant shades of green, and the sound of gurgling water. There is even an original steel bridge that was part of the railway's original route, relocated to the museum to make the riding experience complete.

When you step off at the depot, you will be met with a view of stationary train sets. Men might find their thoughts drifting back to childhood, when their eyes lit up at the thought of becoming train drivers or conductors one day. You can sit here for a moment before heading back. Preferably on foot, it is a pleasant walk that will take you past a new exhibition at the Pribylina open-air museum. This is a unique relaxation zone that will connect you even deeper with nature from within. Sitting in a raptor's nest or snuggling up in a bear's den is an indescribable experience. You definitely have to try it!

Naturally, the admission ticket includes the entire exhibition of Múzeum liptovskej dediny, so it would be a shame not to explore the individual exhibits consisting of traditional houses, a village school, or a manor house. A walk through the medieval-style village, illustrating how our grandmothers once lived, is really easy and suitable for children or seniors. It is so beautiful here that you should reserve a whole day for your visit. You won't even want to head home sooner. Find nice accommodation near Považská lesná železnica and enjoy a wonderful time with your family.

Accommodation Pribylina and accommodation Vavrišovo are the closest options to stay literally a stone's throw away from the Považská lesná železnica exhibition. However, while you are in the area, check out other trip ideas in Liptov that this popular and highly sought-after central Slovak region has to offer.

Vajskovský vodopád

Vajskovský vodopád

Dolná Lehota

Vajskovský vodopád falls along the flow of the Vajskovský potok stream, which flows through one of the most beautiful valleys of the Nízke Tatry mountains. That is Vajskovská dolina. It offers many attractive options for hiking, cycling, boating on the lake, and beautiful walks through the quiet forest. One such walk will lead you to the 9 m high Vajskovský vodopád, which is located at an altitude of 1,200 m above sea level. The valley is attractive throughout the entire year, and its advantage is that it is not overly crowded with tourists, as it lies off the main tourist routes.

The waterfall is magnificent in every season; however, like any other, it is most striking during the period after heavy rains and when snow melts. What is characteristic of it? Veils of water falling from a height, their roar, and beautiful, in some periods even wild, vegetation. The pristine nature of the gorgeous Vajskovská dolina valley protects and hides it well. You will find it at its very end. While walking through the valley, make some natural noise, as bears occur in large numbers in these places. In fact, the first chamois were released here in the past, relocated from the Vysoké Tatry mountains.

You can reach the waterfall from the village of Dolná Lehota. From there, your steps will lead along a 13.5 km long hiking trail that ends right at Vajskovský vodopád. It involves walking along an asphalt road, which you will leave approximately 1.5 km from the waterfall. From there, you will continue through a small forest and a meadow. Whether you go on foot or pedal on a bicycle is entirely up to you. Given the terrain, the hike is classified as easy. And we certainly recommend completing it in winter as well, when the waterfall offers a beautiful icy view.

Please note that due to moving within the Národný park Nízke Tatry, it is forbidden to make fires, camp, or pick forest berries. Leave those for the animals and simply look all around at what our beautiful Mother Nature offers you. Breathe the fresh air, enjoy the silence and the sounds of the forest. The entire area is beautiful, so it would be a shame to visit for just one day. Find suitable accommodation near Vajskovský vodopád, for example on the page accommodation Dolná Lehota or accommodation Krpáčovo, and plan several trips. Take your family or friends with you and experience a real adventure.

Múzeum lanovky Von Roll

Múzeum lanovky Von Roll

Horná Lehota (okres Brezno)

Even a museum can be interesting. Múzeum lanovky Von Roll is precisely one of them. This museum is located right on Chopok in the building of the former valley station of the fourth section, namely in Kosodrevina. You can reach the museum from the village of Tále, but if needed, also directly from Demänovská Dolina. For a regular visitor, this museum is not that visible, but it will tell you about the beginnings of tourism in the Low Tatras.

The first cable car with a detachable chair connecting Liptov with Horehronie. This is another way to look at Múzeum lanovky Von Roll. At the time of this cable car's construction, it was a European unique phenomenon by the standards of those days. The principle worked in such a way that only a chair occupied by skiers accelerated and attached to the haul rope. This suited elderly people in particular, who do not like boarding while in motion. During the ride, passengers sat sideways to the direction of travel and were protected from the weather by a canopy. Up to 220 people per hour were transported from one side to the other. A system that has not been surpassed even by the most modern technologies to this day.

A Moravian company brought this super-modern Swiss technology in the past, having similarly developed the cable car to Lomnický štít in 1949. The best times of the Von Roll cable car were precisely from its inception in 1949 until 1998. For a few more years, its section was used for supply purposes, but in 2012 it was dismantled.

If you come to this museum, you can view literal technical wonders inside its premises. It is situated at an altitude of 1,494 meters above sea level. Come and enjoy smaller items as well as a passenger car, a freight car, and a maintenance car. You will be captivated by how people a few years ago managed to invent an original detachable system. In 2014, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Demänovská Dolina, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to Alojz Lutonský, who stood at the birth of this cable car.

So that you do not have far to go from either side of Chopok, feel free to book accommodation near Múzeum lanovky Von Roll. It is entirely up to you whether you choose accommodation in Tále or accommodation in Jasná. Perhaps the nature of Národný park Nízke Tatry will catch your interest, and your full-day trip in hiking boots is taken care of. Nearby, you can take a look underground in Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov or play golf on the top green of the Gray Bear Tále golf course. We are convinced that a tour of the museum, along with your other itinerary, will fulfill a whole day's holiday in Slovakia.

Jasná Chopok juh - Kosodrevina

Jasná Chopok juh - Kosodrevina

Demänovská Dolina

Do you like everything that is the best? The best, the biggest, the highest quality? We invite you to the largest and most extensive ski resort in Slovakia. And rest assured that it will remain the largest and best for a long time to come. Welcome to Jasná.

With its parameters, the Jasná ski resort resembles Alpine rather than Slovak ski resorts. Judge for yourself: 45 kilometers of slopes, 2 gondolas, 7 chairlifts, 15 ski lifts, and one of the world's unique attractions: a funitel on the northern side. It is the most modern and fastest type of gondola lift you can encounter. A single cabin can accommodate up to 24 skiers. And the total capacity of the resort? A dizzying more than 30,000 skiers per hour.

Jasná is divided into two parts, which were successfully connected precisely thanks to the funitel. Into the more extensive and better-known northern side, and the beautiful, less touched southern side. It is precisely the southern side we will look at today.

The southern slopes of Chopok, especially in the area called Kosodrevina, are only for the best and most experienced skiers. This part of the resort is located between the peak of Chopok and the Horský hotel Kosodrevina mountain hotel. Chopok stands at an altitude of over 2,000 meters and undoubtedly belongs among our most majestic and popular peaks. Today, you can ski directly from its summit.

All slopes in this area are black, the most demanding. If you are not confident on skis, don't even try it here. Due to their steep incline, the slopes on the southern side are groomed less frequently than those in the north. Be prepared for that, but when fresh snow falls, skiing at Kosodrevina is perhaps the best skiing experience in the country. The slopes here are serviced by 3 ski lifts and, above all, a brand-new 15-passenger gondola leading from the Kosodrevina hotel at an altitude of 1,495 meters above sea level directly to the summit of Chopok.

On the southern slope of Chopok, at Kosodrevina, you will find numerous steep chutes that will be appreciated especially by freeride enthusiasts. Riding through pristine, untouched powder will become an addiction, and you will never want to stop. Add to that the magnificent views into the valley, and the result will be an unforgettable skiing experience.

Have you always dreamed of staying right on the slope during a skiing trip? If so, Kosodrevina will make that possible for you. Right on the slope, you will find a stylish mountain hotel, and admit it, staying in such a beautiful environment right in the middle of the slope, what more could a skier want? Alternatively, you can stay in the villages at the foot of the mountains, in Tále or Bystrá, where you can also take a trip to Bystrianska jaskyňa cave. Chopok south – Kosodrevina is for the most demanding and discerning skiers. If you are one, you have nothing more to hesitate about.

Roháčske plesá

Roháčske plesá

Zuberec

Roháčske plesá belong to the most touristically attractive places in Západné Tatry. They rank among the most beautiful locations in these mountains. The four Roháčske plesá tarns (Veľké, Druhé, Tretie, and Horné Roháčske pleso) are surrounded by massive Tatra peaks such as Rákoň, Volovec, Ostrý Roháč, Plačlivé, and Baníkov.

The lakes are located at an altitude of 1,562 to 1,719 meters above sea level and are connected by the Roháčsky potok stream. The tarns can be reached from Chata Zverovka or from the central parking lot Zverovka - Spálená dolina.

The best way to see this area is to set out along the Náučný chodník Roháčske plesá educational trail. The trail starts in Roháčska dolina, continues through the junctions Šindľovec and Adamcuľa to Ťatliakova chata and Ťatliakovo jazero, and further through Smutná dolina all the way to Tretie Roháčske pleso. It is a medium-difficulty route, 7 kilometers long with an elevation gain of 620 meters. Eight information boards are placed along the trail; in addition to the tarns, they are also dedicated to flora and fauna, avalanches, and water. The trail is accessible only seasonally from June 15 to October 31. Up to Ťatliakova chata, the path is designated as suitable for wheelchair users.

Interesting flora occurs in the surroundings of the tarns. For example, the very rare plant narrow-leaved bur-reed (ježohlav úzkolistý) grows there, which, apart from certain Tatra tarns, cannot be found anywhere else. Among animals, chamois or marmots can be spotted.

Benches and wooden tables are placed around Roháčske plesá, serving for rest and the consumption of your own snacks. Roháčsky vodopád

Roháčsky vodopád

Zuberec

Roháčsky vodopád is also called the giant of the Západné Tatry. Probably because, with its respectable height of 23 meters, it is the highest waterfall in Orava. You can reach it from the popular Orava village of Zuberec. Part of this hike is quite steep, but not long, and the result is truly worth it. Tourists will remember this wonderful sight for a long time.

Roháčsky vodopád consists of the Upper and Lower waterfalls. However, in most available sources, it is listed as a single one. Vyšný Roháčsky vodopád has the aforementioned height of 23 meters, while the lower one is cascading in nature. This Orava water stream lies on Studený potok in Roháčska dolina at an altitude of 1,340 meters above sea level.

You can set off to the waterfall from the Roháče-Spálená ski resort. A parking lot is also located here. The first part of the route follows an asphalt road suitable for strollers. You will meet many tourists and families with children here, especially during the summer season. After all, Roháčska dolina is among the most popular valleys of the Západné Tatry.

You can plan your hike to this mighty waterfall along with a trip to Roháčske plesá or Ťatliakova chata. You will thus discover the Západné Tatry in all their beauty. An educational trail with information boards about local fauna and flora leads to Roháčske plesá. Along this trail, via a detour from the Adamcuľa intersection, you will reach Roháčsky vodopád. It is probably most impressive during the snowmelt period in early spring, when the water flow can reach up to 1,200 liters per second.

The wonderful nature of the Západné Tatry is tailor-made for a vacation in winter or summer. Choose from our large selection. Are you interested in cottages, guesthouses, or apartments in Zuberec? Jasná Chopok juh - Srdiečko

Jasná Chopok juh - Srdiečko

Demänovská Dolina

Are you a skier? And you haven't been to Jasná yet? You simply must change that this winter. The most modern ski resort in Slovakia offers everything. Modern and wide ski slopes, super-fast cable cars, but also mysterious nooks of the resort that remind one of the good old days of the skiing era. One such nook is the Srdiečko area on the southern slopes of Chopok.

You won't find many resorts that resemble the ski courses of your youth with their atmosphere. You might be surprised, but you will find exactly such places in Jasná. If you get tired of tens of kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes on the northern side, where unfortunately there is almost always a large number of people, head to the south. You will be taken to the top of Chopok by a modern funitel. Steep black slopes await you here. Once you manage this section, you will reach Srdiečko.

There is a well-known mountain hotel here, where you will certainly make many new friends. A friendly atmosphere and a wonderful panorama of the mountains are the best things you could wish for during a ski stay. You will have majestic Chopok right in the palm of your hand and a chairlift right under your windows. You can get to Kosodrevina by this lift, from where a modern high-capacity cable car leads all the way to the top of Chopok.

The slopes at Srdiečko are also inclined towards less experienced skiers, although absolute beginners should look somewhere else. The slope leading along the chairlift also has challenging sections. The part west of Srdiečko is somewhat gentler. You will find classic ski lifts here, where there is almost always a minimum of people. This red-marked slope belongs to the longest descents in Slovakia. You should definitely try it; it is an unmistakable experience directly from the top of Chopok.

One of the less known nooks of the southern side of Chopok close to Srdiečko is Dereše. An older ski lift leads to a height of approximately 2000 meters above sea level. Dereše are interesting not only for their natural beauty but also for a beautiful slope with open terrain where you don't have to worry about queues of people. You will feel like in a movie with professional skiers. If you visit Jasná, don't just ski on the northern side. The southern side has a completely different atmosphere, and many will like it more than the more commercial northern side.

Srdiečko is very easily accessible; a classic road even leads here. You can get here from the direction of Tále. In addition to traffic accessibility, one unique attraction is located nearby, the Jaskyňa Mŕtvych netopierov (Cave of Dead Bats). You won't find groomed trails or artificial lighting here. As an adventurer, a caver, you will set off into the dark depths and discover all the underground beauties by the light of a carbide lamp.

You can stay directly at the Horský hotel Srdiečko (Srdiečko Mountain Hotel), from which a chairlift leads and several slopes end here. Alternatively, there are several villages with private accommodation and guest houses available to you. Tále, Bystrá, or Mýto pod Ďumbierom are popular destinations among tourists offering affordable accommodation.

Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov

Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov

Brezno

Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov is one of the most extensive and most important high-mountain caves in Slovakia. It is also the only accessible high-mountain cave in the country. It is located at an altitude of 1,520 m a.s.l. on the southern side of the Ďumbier massif in Nízke Tatry.

Accessibility to the cave is possible from several directions. From the village of Bystrá towards Trangoška, and from there on foot for approximately 1 hour via a mountain trail to Chata M. R. Štefánika. The second route also leads from the village of Bystrá, but towards Srdiečko, where you will take the cable car to the Kosodrevina intermediate station, or all the way to the top of Chopok peak, and from there on foot to the aforementioned mountain hut. From the Liptov side, a hike on foot is possible from Liptovský Ján, or from the Jasná - Biela púť ski resort by cable car to Chopok and from there on foot to Chata M. R. Štefánika.

The cave is accessible from March to December on weekends, and during the summer holidays, it is open daily. In the months of January and February, it is completely closed. Before you head out for a trip here, check the admission fees and opening hours directly on the official website. Every entry must be reported and reserved in advance by phone or email.

The cave tour is possible on three routes. Route A, approximately 1 km long, can be completed even with children. It leads through the central 7th floor of the cave and consists mainly of rock paths and wire-rope ladder belays. For the more demanding, there are routes B and C, speleotrekking tours made accessible by the speleological guide service. These are accessible only to physically fit persons over 18 years of age. The first of them is slightly less demanding and takes approximately 2 hours. The second one is for advanced visitors with climbing experience, as the truly demanding cave terrain is exposed almost continuously. It lasts approximately 3 hours.

Kozie chrbty, a relatively small limestone massif with deep folding, is 2 km long and 300 m wide. In its depths, it hides an intricate tangle of corridors across a total of (so far known) 14 floors and 2 parallel branches. The currently mapped length of the cave is 19,885 m, with a depth of 324 m. The largest underground space is located directly under Chata M. R. Štefánika. It is the well-known Bystrický dóm hall with a volume of up to 52,500 m³. It is located on the 7th floor, at a depth of 180 m.

An interesting feature is a huge find site of bat bones, the age of which is estimated at 6,000 years. It is precisely to this largest bat burial ground that the cave owes its name. Besides these, however, bones of small rodents, martens, brown bear, and goat were also found on the edges.

Another interesting feature of the cave is the occurrence of volcanic rocks from the Cretaceous period. These are folded into the limestone formation and appear in several cave passages. You can recognize them by their reddish-brown or green color. White-pink agate is also present here.

Since 2001, the cave has been declared a national natural monument. Its environment is cold, humid, and dark, but it has a beneficial effect on the upper respiratory tract. Its average temperature reaches 3.5 °C, while some of its parts do not exceed a temperature of more than 1 °C year-round. For this reason, warm clothing and, of course, suitable sturdy footwear are required to enter the cave.

To become a real cave explorer for a moment and visit what is probably one of the oldest caves in Slovakia. Are you still hesitating? There is nothing to think about, but we recommend taking enough time for the tour and not rushing. It will be ideal to book accommodation near Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov so that you don't rush the excursion, but fully experience it, or combine this unique experience with other nearby attractions.

Folklórny festival Východná

Folklórny festival Východná

Východná

Do you like Slovak traditions, folk music, and dances? Do you like searching for cultural events? Then definitely visit the Folklórny Festival Východná. This largest and at the same time oldest festival of ours with international participation is organized annually in the picturesque village of Východná. On the threshold of the summer season, in the first weekend of July, the Nízke Tatry region comes alive with folk traditions and for a few days becomes the center of Slovak culture.

The Folklóry festival is a showcase of the regular and tireless work of many institutions, associations, and individuals who are engaged in the field of traditional folk culture. Over its 66-year history, the festival has become the premier showcase of the traditions of the Slovak nation. On average, 1,400 participants from folklore and singing groups, children's ensembles, soloist musicians, and dancers take care of a rich program every year. The participation of folk craftsmen, artists, and woodcarvers is very significant. Various dance, music, and singing workshops, craft creative workshops, and entertainment programs for children enjoy increasing popularity.

By its existence, the festival significantly contributes to the revival and preservation of precious cultural values. The history of its origin is interesting and a pleasant memory is attached to it. The Kriváň ethnographic troupe from Východná participated in the festivities in the Moravian town of Strážnica in 1952. Their performance was so successful that Kriváň won the award "sweetheart of Strážnica". This experience so enthused and inspired the members of Kriváň that they decided to organize the Festival of Songs and Dances at home in Východná.

The first year of the festivities in Východná took place in 1953 on a makeshift stage and lasted only one day. At the 2nd year, the professional artistic ensemble SĽUK performed as an important guest, and the 3rd year was already a two-day event. Lúčnica presented itself as a guest at that time. Historically significant was the 4th year of the festival, when new thematic programs were added, such as a review of children's folk ensembles, but also a folk dance school or a ceremonial parade of all participants passing through the entire village. The three-day program as we know it today took place only from the 5th year.

Besides the stage, a new amphitheater was built in the 1970s, which was based on the architecture of original Liptov buildings. Gradually, a "horseshoe" for the presentation of folk art elements, dressing rooms, exhibition showcases, and a "spring" with washbasins for visitors were also added. The 28-meter-high Májka observation tower also joined, from which you will be offered an amazing view of the Tatry. The amphitheater acquired its current form with a covered stage in 2006. The first international participation at the festival was the Folklórna skupina Goralov (Podhale) originating from the Polish town of Nowy Targ.

A curiosity is the so-called Ornamentíky, which, at the initiative of ethnographer Jarmila Paličková and Viliam Gruska, were brought by more than 20 village folklore groups in 1974. Ornamentíky are embroidered standards that draw from regional traditions and state the name of the folklore collective or village they come from. At the jubilee 60th year of the Festival Východná, these ornamentíky were hung in the amphitheater. Currently, all folklore collectives have an ornamentík as their business card and present themselves with them at events at home and abroad.

Become a part of this significant cultural event yourself and book your summer holiday in Liptov today. A rich offer of accommodation near the Folklórny Festival Východná can be found on our page accommodation Východná. After the cultural experience, treat yourself to well-being in the thermal pools of our largest water park Tatralandia. A visit to the Dom hore nohami will also be an interesting experience. We believe that you will like Liptov and take home many great experiences.

Hybická tiesňava

Hybická tiesňava

Východná

Visitors to Horný Liptov will experience the atmosphere of rainforests in the impressive Hybická tiesňava gorge, which was declared a national natural monument due to its uniqueness. This unique natural phenomenon, falling within the Tatranský národný park, is located north of the distinctive village of Východná in the Liptovský Mikuláš district. The beautiful canyon-like valley was shaped by the inconspicuous Hybica stream in the soft limestone bedrock. For lovers of picturesque natural scenery, this little-visited place will become a paradise on earth.

This unique piece of nature combines steep stone crags rising to the sky, an impressive forest scenery rich in rare species of fauna and flora, and a pleasantly murmuring stream, which was the painter of this beauty in the past. The gorge also fascinates visitors with its high humidity, evoking the atmosphere of rainforests. A huge benefit of this place is its very low visitor numbers, preserving the naturalness and pristine character of the environment. This is mainly due to the fact that no marked hiking trail leads to Hybická tiesňava. You can only reach this breathtaking spot via a dirt road from the village of Východná or through the forest from the nearby village of Podbanské.

An interesting fact is that Hybická tiesňava is only 4 m wide at its narrowest point. In contrast, the towering overhanging crags lining the passage through the canyon reach an incredible height of 15–20 m in some places. The passage through the gorge currently leads largely through the streambed. Activists plan to build a hiking trail that should lead in the future from the birthplace of the famous movie outlaw, the village of Hybe. The trail through the gorge itself should be 3 km long.

If you decide on a vacation in Liptov this year, be sure to bring high-quality hiking boots with you and set out to explore this unique place. You can combine hiking in this location with a visit to Farma Východná or the popular Folklórny festival Východná, which takes place regularly on the first weekend of July. Your vacation in this region will certainly be made more pleasant by a wide range of accommodation options near Hybická tiesňava. You can make use of cottages and chalets in Východná and its surroundings, or accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš, which includes a wide selection of guesthouses and hotels. A vacation in Liptov is an offer of unusual experiences and relaxation directly surrounded by unique nature.

Amfiteáter Východná

Východná

You have certainly heard of the picturesque village of Východná in the Liptov region, which is famous for its annual Folklórny festival Východná. Did you know that this folk culture festival is the oldest nationwide festival in Slovakia with international participation? Prepare yourself for an exceptional cultural experience. Traditional folk dances and songs, excellent acoustics, the open sky above your head, and much more await you at Amfiteáter Východná.

On the first weekend of July, this extraordinary place fills with thousands of people, and the Nízke Tatry region comes alive with the traditions of our ancestors. From a distance, you will be welcomed by the 28 m high Májka observation tower, from which you can see all the way to the Tatry mountains. Every year, around 1,400 performers ensure a fantastic program. Evening concerts also have their own charm, creating a romantic atmosphere at sunset and making the performance experience even more powerful. In addition to music and dance, you can admire the architecture of the amphitheater, which is based on traditional Liptov structures. Large wooden sculptures are the works of woodcarvers from various corners of Slovakia.

An emotional story is connected to the creation of our most significant Slovak folk festival. In 1952, the Kriváň ethnographic troupe from Východná participated in the celebrations in Strážnice in Moravia. Their performance met with great success, and Kriváň won the "Darling of Strážnice" award. This experience thrilled the members of Kriváň so much that they decided to organize the Festival of Songs and Dances at home, in Východná. The first edition of the festival took place in 1953 on a temporary stage; however, just a year later, a wooden amphitheater was built as we know it today.

Folk creations, craftspeople, and local producers whose products you can purchase directly at the amphitheater are an indispensable part of the festival. Young people with an artistic soul will also find plenty to enjoy, as music, dance, and singing workshops are organized for them. Children will have fun creating in craft workshops. Anyone who feels like it can make a bowl or an animal on a potter's wheel, weave a whip, or try blueprinting.

Východná is a celebration of folklore that contributes to the preservation of our traditions. Come and experience an unforgettable event that will touch your heart. Book your accommodation near Amfiteáter Východná today! If you are toying with the idea of staying in the Liptov region longer, be sure to check out other attractions of Liptov. Mauzóleum Andreja Hlinku

Mauzóleum Andreja Hlinku

Ružomberok

The Mauzóleum Andreja Hlinku is a solemn place breathing with the history of the Slovak nation. The memorial to the patriot who dedicated his life to the struggle for Slovakia's autonomy is located directly in the center of the district town of Ružomberok, below the Kostol sv. Ondreja. It was built in 1939 in honor of Andrej Hlinka, a native of Černová, which is part of Ružomberok. To this day, it attracts visitors to the town and holidaymakers who come here to pay their respects to the leading figure of the Slovak national movement.

The memorial itself consists of two parts. It is comprised of a chapel with an entrance and a tomb. Originally, a statue of the Virgin Mary stood at this site, which was replaced between 1990 and 1991 by a bust of Andrej Hlinka and a stainless-steel cross. When visiting the tomb, your attention will certainly be drawn to the glass coffin pierced by a bullet hole. It was damaged in 1968 in Dóm sv. Martina in Bratislava, where it was temporarily placed. Next to the memorial stands the building of the Town Hall, which also includes the rectory. It was here that Andrej Hlinka served as a Roman Catholic priest during his life. Standing at its entrance is a larger-than-life bronze statue of the patriot.

Interestingly, the remains of Andrej Hlinka are not located in the tomb. Although they were originally laid to rest here, in 1944 the government moved them to an unknown location following an attack by an insurgent aircraft. Legends about his true grave are still passed down today, but Hlinka's final resting place remains unknown. In the past, the mausoleum in Ružomberok was also depicted on the 1,000-koruna banknote.

During your summer vacation in Liptov, you too can visit the Mauzóleum Andreja Hlinku. During the summer holidays, this location is accessible to the general public. Combine your visit with a trip to one of the picturesque valleys located near Ružomberok. If you choose Čutkovská dolina, be sure not to miss the Obrovo amusement park. If the picturesque Hrabovská dolina appeals to you, test your skills at the Tarzania rope park. The options around Ružomberok are truly wide, just like the accommodation options near the Mauzóleum Andreja Hlinku. Accommodation in Ružomberok includes comfortable guesthouses and hotels. In nearby Hrabovo, holidaymakers who prefer private cottages and chalets will also find what they are looking for. Ružomberok

Galéria Ľudovíta Fullu, which is part of the Slovak National Gallery network, is located in the district town of Ružomberok, on D. Makovického Street, right next to the Liptovské múzeum. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to the local native Ľudovít Fulla, who is considered the founder of modern painting in Slovakia. In addition to the exhibition of paintings, the gallery also includes Fulla's tomb decorated with mosaics, the designs of which were made by the artist himself.

The exhibition of Fulla's paintings consists of a complete collection of 548 works. Among all of them, we can mention the painting Pastierik, which is simultaneously the artist's first work. In addition to paintings, the gallery also exhibits examples of the master's drawings, graphics, and illustrations. Visitors can also access the artist's own texts, with which he commented on his work. To complete the perfect illustration of the master's work, the exhibition also includes Fulla's studio, his study, and part of the living room. In addition to the permanent exhibition, various short-term and occasional exhibitions are naturally held at the Galéria Ľudovíta Fullu. Interestingly, all the works were donated to the state by the artist Ľudovít Fulla himself. Part of the deed of gift between him and the state was an agreement that in return the state would build a gallery with a studio and an apartment for him. Ľudovít Fulla spent the last years of his life in this apartment.

However, exhibitions and displays are not the only attraction of this Liptov gallery. Many visitors are appealed by the rich offer of a regular program tailored to art lovers both young and old. You can create your own work of art in the Ateliér, where various art techniques and procedures are prepared for visitors. Motifs following the ongoing exhibition and permanent exhibition are offered as inspiration. For families with children, the gallery offers the permanent program Famíliaart. It focuses on developing children's creativity through various art techniques. The program is aimed at children aged 2 to 7. The opportunity for creative leisure time is also offered by creative workshops for adults and older children called Ručne stručne or the creative journalistic workshop Fullakuk. Music and film lovers will also find something to their liking at regularly held concerts called Hudba u Fullu or at Kino u Fullu, which screens alternative film documentaries once a month.

If you love fine art, be sure to enrich your holiday in Liptov with a visit to the Galéria Ľudovíta Fullu. STIV Čertovica

STIV Čertovica

Vyšná Boca

One of the most popular mountain ranges for skiers in Slovakia is undoubtedly Nízke Tatry. And where is there the most snow if not directly on the ridge of the mountain range? Here, for example, you can take a look at the Čertovica pass, which spreads at an altitude of up to 1,238 meters above sea level.

Where is the Čertovica pass located? It forms a natural connection between Liptov and Horehronie. A well-known road passes through it, connecting Liptovský Hrádok with Brezno. An excellent location right on the ridge of one of our highest mountain ranges predestines Čertovica to be one of the snow-richest resorts.

There are many slopes at Čertovica, but we will focus on the Ski resort Čertovica STIV. The ski resort is intended for less demanding skiers who are primarily looking for peace and affordable skiing. Despite the fact that the total length of the slopes is only approximately 1 km, all groups of skiers will come into their own here. The resort is served by a pair of ski lifts. The shorter one serves complete beginners; this slope is marked in blue. It is intended for beginners or children.

The longer lift offers wide opportunities for sports activities for a variety of skiers. The central slope is marked in red, so intermediate skiers will come into their own on it. Čertovica is equally suitable for lovers of off-piste skiing. A freeride zone runs parallel to the central slope here.

Thanks to the fact that the Ski stredisko Čertovica STIV ski resort is located at a high altitude ranging between 1,238 – 1,381 meters above sea level, it cannot complain about a lack of snow. And if there happens to be a bit less snow, count on a well-thought-out artificial snowmaking system at Čertovica that will take care of the snow cover throughout the winter.

Čertovica STIV is also inclined towards day-trippers or those who want to hit the slope for just a few hours. A ski school, regularly groomed slopes, and refreshment options at a snack bar are a matter of course at the resort.

If you decide to visit, you can enjoy Čertovica in ways other than just on skis. The attractive environment of Nízke Tatry mainly attracts hikers. Right along the ridge of the mountain range, you can head east towards Kráľova hoľa or west towards Ďumbier, for example. Nízke Tatry are also known for the occurrence of beautiful caves; true adventurers can visit Jaskyňa Mŕtvych netopierov, for instance.

This important mountain resort is prepared for an influx of tourists throughout the entire year. Therefore, it provides them with plenty of accommodation capacities, such as guesthouses, apartments, private rooms, or chalets in one of the villages below the Čertovica pass. Perfect skiing does not have to cost an entire paycheck. An example is the Ski stredisko Čertovica STIV, which is located in an attractive setting and offers skiing at a reasonable price.

Štôlňa Salvátor

Štôlňa Salvátor

Vyšná Boca

Banícka expozícia v štôlni Salvátor vo Vyšnej Boci represents a unique look into the depths of gold and precious metal mining history in the Low Tatras region.

The attraction is located in the village of Vyšná Boca, in the Liptovský Mikuláš district, in the picturesque environment of the protected area of Národný park Nízke Tatry. Štôlňa Salvátor is part of a mining educational trail, and its history dates back to the 16th century, when gold ore was intensively mined here. Entrance to the underground is only possible with a guide who will take you through narrow passages carved into solid rock, while during the tour you will see preserved mining works, geological layers, and period tools. An interesting feature is that the tunnel is horizontal, allowing relatively comfortable access to the heart of the mountain, where the temperature year-round reaches a stable 6 to 8 degrees Celsius. The guides' expert commentary focuses not only on the technical parameters of mining, but also on the hard life of miners and the legends associated with mining in Boca. The entire tunnel complex is sensitively restored to maintain its original raw state and historical value, offering visitors a powerful emotional experience from contact with the underground world.

What can you find here?

In the area and inside the tunnel itself, you will find mining passages with examples of hand-chiseled rock, replicas of wooden mining supports, and mining carts. Before entering the underground, a small open-air museum with information panels has been built, mapping the history of gold mining in the surrounding area and ore processing technology in mining mills. Safety helmets and cloaks are available to visitors, which are essential for safe and comfortable movement underground.

Who is the place suitable for?

The tunnel is an ideal destination for families with older children (usually from 6 years of age) who are interested in history and outdoor adventure. It is also sought after by lovers of technical monuments, geologists, and tourists looking for authentic experiences away from mass tourist centers. Due to the nature of the underground and the lower temperature, it is necessary to equip oneself with sturdy footwear and warmer clothing even during the summer months.

What can you visit in the surrounding area?

Right in the village of Vyšná Boca, you can admire the preserved folk architecture of miners' houses or visit the local Lutheran church. Just a few kilometers away lies the Čertovica pass, which is a starting point for ridge hikes in the Low Tatras, for example to the Beňuška peak. In the neighboring village of Nižná Boca, the observation tower Rozhľadňa Krajčov vrch is accessible, and if you are looking for further mining monuments, the historical village of Magurka or the mining exhibition in Liptovský Ján are also within reach.

Banícky dom

Banícky dom

Vyšná Boca

Banícky dom in the Liptov village of Vyšná Boca is an external exhibition of the Liptovské múzeum v Ružomberku. It authentically depicts the traditional way of life and housing of a mining family. The house, which is a national cultural monument, was donated for museum purposes by its last owner, Mr. Daniel Böhmer.

The house features a five-room exhibition with a preserved original heating system as well as its original furnishings. The entrance to the house is an anteroom, which had a communicative function but was also used for food preparation. The front room was a space inhabited only very occasionally and rarely. The back room, used for daily life and sleeping, is an exhibition on the history of mining in the surroundings of Vyšná Boca. There are two pantries in the house. One of them, the room-adjacent chamber (izbenná komora), served for occasional sleeping and the storage of clothes and bedding. The second pantry served for storing food and household utensils.

Part of the homestead is also an outbuilding (staj), which houses an exhibition on cattle and sheep farming and meadow management. These were very important for the village of Vyšná Boca, as after the decline of mining activity, these became the main occupation of the local residents.

During the summer season, various accompanying programs take place here, such as "Bocké batohy" with demonstrations of traditional forms of hay transport. Events dedicated to the mining traditions of the Bocianska dolina valley are occasionally organized.

When planning a trip to individual attractions in Liptov, definitely do not forget Banícky dom Vyšná Boca. For a comprehensive experience, we recommend making your trip around the area a multi-day one. To book accommodation, you can use our accommodation Vyšná Boca page, where you will find, for example, great cottages and traditional cabins for rent.

Skanzen Vlkolínec

Skanzen Vlkolínec

Vlkolínec

Vlkolínec is a settlement located beneath the Sidrovo peak, which is currently a folk architecture reservation listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The settlement of Vlkolínec is a local administrative part of the town of Ružomberok in the Žilina Region. You can reach it by turning off the road between Ružomberok and Banská Bystrica. However, you can also get to the settlement via paths and trails from almost every direction. The open-air museum is unique in that even today, some of the houses are permanently or temporarily inhabited, making it necessary for tourists to visit only marked exhibitions.

In written sources, Vlkolínec is directly mentioned for the first time in 1461. Another important date was January 26, 1977, when the government of the Slovak Socialist Republic, aiming to protect the cultural value of the site, decided that the settlement would become a folk architecture reservation. Finally, a third significant event took place on December 11, 1993, when Vlkolínec was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

The settlement's buildings currently consist of forty-five homesteads, comprising wooden residential houses as well as farm buildings. Since the structures were built on a steep slope, builders leveled the uneven mountain terrain using a so-called a stone foundation. Upon this, they laid hewn logs of coniferous trees. The walls were treated with colorful lime wash, which is a unique Vlkolínec feature. For the roofs, they also utilized what was most abundant in the surrounding area, wood, from which they crafted shingles. Most residential houses consist of three rooms: an entrance hallway (pitvor, used as a kitchen), a pantry (komora, a storage space), and a main room (izba, serving as both a living space and a bedroom).

Besides residential houses, there are other important buildings located in Vlkolínec. Probably the oldest structure in the settlement is the belfry, built in 1770. The belfry, which, just like the houses, consists of a stone foundation and a wooden superstructure, served three times a day as a time signal, while its tolling summoned residents to religious services and alerted them to fires and other dangers. The dominant feature in the center of the settlement is a 12-meter-deep well from 1860, from which all residents of Vlkolínec drew drinking water. Important buildings also include Kostol Navštívenia Panny Márie (Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary) from 1875 and the former school building.

In the meadows surrounding Vlkolínec, visitors can see so-called hay barns, where hay was stored for the winter and brought down only later as needed. Near the settlement, one can encounter several water springs, some of which yield drinking water.

Part of the open-air museum naturally includes refreshments and a souvenir shop. Upon agreement, the offer includes guided tours, craft demonstrations, creative workshops, and, for the more demanding, tastings of local specialties.

If this information has convinced you that Vlkolínec is worth a visit, book cheap accommodation here through our portal and stay in Liptov a little longer, also to enjoy the beautiful surrounding mountains, water parks, or ski resorts. In Ružomberok, you will find a wide selection of apartments or guesthouses, while the nearby Hrabovo recreational resort offers comfortable chalets and luxurious log cabins.

Brankovský vodopád

Brankovský vodopád

Ružomberok

Thanks to its height of 55 m, Brankovský vodopád is the highest waterfall in the Nízke Tatry. It is located in the cadastre of the town of Ružomberok, in the settlement of Podsuchá, in the side valley of Vyšný Brankov, in the Žilinský kraj. Towering above it is the peak Veľký Brankov, after which the waterfall is also named. It is situated at an altitude of 775–830 m a. s. l. It drops from Kurucká skala, a rock formation composed of dolomite. Since 1980, it has been a national natural monument located in the Národný park Nízke Tatry. The area of the entire Národná prírodná rezervácia Brankovský vodopád nature reserve covers 27.71 ha.

The waterfall was formed thanks to a mountain stream falling over a limestone rock step. The water has a stable flow rate of 3 l/s. The wall down which the waterfall flows is slightly broken up, which is why various ledges and cascades occur here. The waterfall is hidden in the valley, but the route to it is easy. It could almost be called a walk, apart from the final section if you want to get directly underneath the waterfall. There, on the last few meters, wooden bridges with handrails are located, as well as a chain right under the waterfall to prevent potential injuries.

Year-round, it belongs among the highly sought-after locations for experienced hikers, but it is also a pleasant mountain walk for families with children or seniors. The walk to it takes from half an hour to an hour, depending on your physical condition. It is not demanding. You start from the parking lot on the main road between Ružomberok and Donovaly and continue along the marked green hiking trail. You pass through beautiful natural scenery formed by a dark valley surrounded by forest. You can also reach the waterfall from Ružomberok via a cycling path.

In summer, the waterfall creates a crystal-clear veil of falling water. The sight of it has a soothing effect, acting as a balm for the soul. However, given that it is relatively hidden in the valley, do not expect wide views or much penetrating sunlight from it. Yet, this cooling effect is all the more pleasant during the hottest months of the year. In winter, the scenery changes completely. The waterfall turns into a magnificent icefall, which is becoming increasingly popular among the ice-climbing community.

In addition to hikers, you may also encounter treasure hunters. Legend has it that Jánošík hid his treasures near Brankovský vodopád. So far, no one has found them, so the chance of discovering them is still there. When you are in Donovaly or Ružomberok and passing along the main road, take the time to stop at this beautiful place. You will both take a break from driving and discover a beautiful part of our country.

An even better idea is to book accommodation near Brankovský vodopád. Since there are many opportunities in the Nízke Tatry for hiking, active and passive relaxation, or a trip following the footsteps of history and art, it would be a shame not to stay for at least a few days. Click on the accommodation in Ružomberok page; you will surely find suitable lodging for yourself, your family, or your friends.

Jelení vodopád

Jelení vodopád

Ružomberok

Jelení vodopád can be found in Čutkovská dolina in Národný park Veľká Fatra. Čutkovská dolina is accessible from the Černová city district in Ružomberok. The valley is very popular with families with children, even though it is not very well known. Jelení vodopád is the second highest waterfall in Veľká Fatra, and its charm along with the surrounding nature will certainly enchant you. Set off on this easy trip and see for yourself.

To reach Jelení vodopád, you can take the hiking trail from Černová or from higher up by Koliba u dobrého pastiera. You can also park your car here. The road through Čutkovská dolina is paved at first and later changes into a gravel surface. It is also suitable for bicycles and strollers. Only the last section to the waterfall goes uphill. It takes about 15 minutes up forest stairs, of which there are 84 in total.

The educational trail called „Známa-Neznáma Čutkovská dolina“ leads through Čutkovská dolina. Information boards will reveal everything about the local fauna and flora, with information supplemented by pictures of animals and plants. It is approximately 4 kilometres to Jelení vodopád. On the walk, you can admire Čutkovský potok, the Čebraď water reservoir, or refresh yourself at a spring.

Jelení vodopád is formed by a tributary of Jelení potok flowing into Čutkovský potok. At the meeting point, the water gains force and falls down a rocky surface. The height of the waterfall reaches 24 metres and its highest point sits at an altitude of 824 m above sea level. It is, of course, most beautiful and powerful during the snowmelt period and after heavy rains. Jelení vodopád is a destructive type of waterfall, which means that over time it changes its slope, height, and the water inflow also decreases.
