Halčianske jazero

Halčianske jazero

Banská Belá

The area of Štiavnické vrchy is also known because gold was mined here a long time ago. Energy was needed for its mining, which led to the construction of "tajchy" (artificial water reservoirs). One of the popular and well-known reservoirs in this area is Halčiansky tajch, also known as Halčianske jazero. Come and enjoy your summer holiday right in the village of Banská Belá.

The sun-drenched forest environment and high temperatures will be appreciated by every single holidaymaker in Banská Belá. Right in this village lies an undiscovered treasure of the region, which was created in the second half of the 18th century by damming a stream. This stream flowed in from the settlement of Halča, which belonged to Banská Belá. The original purpose of the reservoir was to power stamp mills and metallurgical facilities in the local village as well as in the Kozelnícka dolina. In 1909, the reservoir was handed over to the Vysoká banícka a lesnícka škola v Banskej Štiavnici. Later, the reservoir served for fish breeding and fishing.

Halčiansky tajch is an artificially created water reservoir. Many locals use it for recreational purposes because it is not as heavily sought after. You enjoy relative peace, solitude, and perfect relaxation here thanks to its more secluded location compared to other lakes. The depth of the reservoir is 13 meters, which is also great for fish farming. Spanning an area of more than 4 hectares, you will easily find your own little spot for sunbathing.

As we have already mentioned, the lake also serves fishing purposes. In addition to breeding, fishing is also permitted here. Within the overall environment, it forms an important landscape feature. Take in the surrounding views and notice the viaduct from the dam, over which a train occasionally passes. To fully enjoy your stay with joy, we recommend booking accommodation near Halčianske jazero. Plan your holiday during the second Saturday of July and rest assured that a fantastic experience awaits you. Every year, a wooden crocodile is retrieved from the lake during a special event.

The village of Banská Belá is an attractive destination from a tourism perspective. Nearby is the district town of Banská Štiavnica, which offers numerous historical monuments and other interesting attractions. It is nice to have a coffee or ice cream at Námestie Svätej Trojice and enjoy the architecture of this ancient mining town. On the way, you can stop and explore the exhibitions at Kaštieľ Svätý Anton. On the way back, try horseback riding at Ranč Nádej. The best solution for you will be to book a chalet near Banská Belá, from where swimming and discovering the surrounding beauty will be right at your fingertips. Will you accept the offer for this type of holiday in Slovakia?

Malé Studenské jazero

Malé Studenské jazero

Banský Studenec

Malé Studenské jazero lake (also called Malé Kolpašské jazero) is one of two reservoirs (tajchy) in the village of Banský Studenec in the Banská Štiavnica district. The second lake is called Veľké Studenské jazero and lies right next to Malé Studenské jazero, sharing a common dam. Both artificial water reservoirs were built for the needs of the mining industry back in the 18th century. Malé Studenské jazero was constructed in 1763, but historical records only cite it as operational in 1774.

The lakes have long ceased to serve as a water reservoir for the mine; currently, the smaller lake is used for fish farming and the larger one for summer recreation. In 2015, the reconstruction of the dam between the lakes was completed, as it had been undercut several times in previous years. On this occasion, the Slovenský vodohospodársky podnik water management enterprise also built a modern beach by the larger of the reservoirs, which is especially popular with families with small children.

Thanks to the fact that each reservoir has its own role, this area is also suitable for groups whose members have different expectations for their holiday. And it won't stop at just fishing and swimming. The surroundings of the lakes are suitable for mountain biking, and a cross-country triathlon is held here regularly. Several marked hiking trails lead from the village. The settlement of Kysihýbel, known for its arboretum, also belongs to the village. There is no shortage of monuments in this area either; for example, you can visit the underground quarry Diery (or Barlangy), which is listed as a UNESCO technical monument.

Start your search for accommodation near Malé Studensko jazero directly in the village of Banský Studenec, where cottages are available for rent, among other options. Various types of stays are also available in Banská Belá, where you can choose an apartment or a cottage, for instance. You will find the widest range of accommodation properties in Banská Štiavnica; it is entirely up to you whether you book a room in a guesthouse, an apartment in the town center, or a cottage on the outskirts. Come and enjoy active summer recreation in a location full of reservoirs (tajchy) and history.

Klinger

Klinger

Banská Štiavnica

Klinger is one of the most beautiful tajchs (artificial water reservoirs) in the Banská Štiavnica region. It is located near the popular Banské múzeum v prírode. Beautiful, at times almost turquoise water uniquely embedded in the natural environment makes it an ideal place for relaxation. Although the water in the tajch is somewhat cooler, it lies in the lap of unspoiled nature, surrounded by nearby forests. It is therefore a sought-after location for families with children as well. You can reach tajch Klinger via a pleasant walk.

It was artificially created in 1759 as a source of energy water for the Ondrej and Žigmund shafts. Its maximum depth is 21 meters. Later, in 1850, by decision of the ministry of the former Vienna government, a swimming facility was built at this location to "ensure the health and cleanliness of the mining folk." Given the era at the time, various restrictions applied. An interesting one was the scheduling of swimming times, which were set for women in the morning and for men in the afternoon.

A historical point of interest is that due to necessary repair work, the first Slovak surface railway track was built here in the 1830s. Tajch Klinger was even depicted on Slovak postage stamps in 2003 as an important technical monument.

Tourists exploring the surroundings consider the Klinger reservoir to be merely a kind of "resting station," since after crossing the dam you reach a trail. With a manageable incline along the collapse pit (former Weiden shaft) and the former Amálka shaft, it leads you to the old mining settlement of Horná Roveň. From there, you will enjoy incredible views of the ancient Štiavnica stratovolcano as well as Sitno peak.

Banská Štiavnica rightfully ranks among the most beautiful Slovak towns. Directly in the town, but also in its immediate surroundings, there are so many attractions that a single day will guaranteed not be enough for your visit. We recommend booking a stay on the page accommodation Banská Štiavnica and perhaps planning the rest of your stay while relaxing by the tajch.

For interest, we will also state a few technical parameters. The lake has a volume of 641,000 m3, an area of 4.33 ha, and a maximum depth of 21 m.

This artificial lake was created, similarly to others in the locality of Banská Štiavnica, for the needs of metallurgy. This happened in the 18th century, and it subsequently underwent several modifications. Currently, it is a popular place for vacationers from the entire surroundings, as well as more distant corners of Slovensko. It is set in a enchanting natural environment that offers diverse options for more or less demanding hiking, walks, and visits to various attractions in the Žarnovica district.

You will appreciate swimming in Hodrušské jazero even if you travel to it together with children. Its banks are modified so that the entry into the water is gradual. Especially in autumn, breathtaking views of the shimmering water will show you, in which the beautiful glowing colors of the forest on the surrounding hills are reflected. Meanwhile, you can comfortably spread out a blanket on the grass and have a picnic. Believe us, your children and you will not easily forget such a joint trip.

Vodná nádrž Turček

Vodná nádrž Turček

Turček

The Vodná nádrž Turček reservoir lies above the village of Turček, in the Turčianske Teplice district. It is situated at the confluence of two rivers Ružová and Turiec. It was built for the purpose of collecting raw drinking water, which is conveyed to a treatment plant in Turček and subsequently supplies the districts of Žiar nad Hronom, Prievidza, and Handlová. At the same time, the dam protects the upper course of the Turiec from floods, and electricity is also generated here. Small hydroelectric power plants were established at several drops and flows.

The total area of the dam is 54 ha, with water flowing into it from a catchment area of 29.5 km², which features up to 95% water yield and high-quality drinking water. The rock-fill dam with an asphalt-concrete seal has a height of 59 m and a crest length of 287 m. With these dimensions, the reservoir can hold almost 11 million m³ of water, while securing water supply abstraction at a rate of 500 l/s.

Turček ranks among the youngest water reservoirs in Slovakia. The construction project was approved in 1989, the building permit was issued in 1992, and the construction itself began in 1993. Work finished in the spring of 1996, and the reservoir was put into operation on May 15, 1996. Due to the construction, six houses were evacuated, and replacement apartments were built in the village for these citizens during the building of the project. At the same time, it was necessary to reconstruct forest roads and a railway underpass.

Swimming in the reservoir and ice skating on the frozen surface are prohibited. Despite the fact that fish thrive here, fishing is not permitted either. Mainly trout are stocked here, which also serve as an indicator of water quality. An interesting fact is that bears living in the area around the dam come to refresh themselves at the reservoir.

The cycling route around the reservoir is popular. It is an asphalt-gravel trail with a length of about 10.5 km. The cycling route starts in the village of Turček, at the intersection with the Turčianska cyklomagistrála cycling artery. Following this path, you will get past the village and then ascend along a green-marked forest gravel road all the way to a lookout point. This provides a view not only of the dam, but also of the Kremnické vrchy. From the viewpoint, forest paths lead around the entire body of water until you return back to the village. Since you cannot go swimming in Turček, we will redirect you to the Aquapark Turčianske Teplice. And you do not have to limit yourself to bathing; you can also explore history at Kremnický hrad. Or you can head out to discover natural beauties in Harmanecká jaskyňa.

Start searching for accommodation near Vodná nádrž Turček in Kremnica (located about 11 km away), for example. The selection there is the most diverse. If you prefer a countryside setting, the villages of Králiky, Tajov, or Horná Štubňa might interest you.
