Slovakia is exceptionally rich in caves considering its size. The number of registered caves and chasms has already reached approximately 6,700. Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa is part of the longest cave system in Slovakia, which has a total length of almost 36 km.

Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa is one of the oldest in Europe. Its existence has been documented as early as 1299. It is located near the road leading through Demänovská dolina. If you have ever been to Jasná, you have surely passed right by it. And believe us, it is well worth stopping by.

The cave is unique due to its ice decoration. Intriguingly, just 500 years ago, it was a regular dripstone cave. After the collapse of certain passages and the prevention of air circulation, conditions were created in the cave for the formation of ice. In 1885, a shelter was built near the cave, and the first tourists began visiting it. However, it was not heavily visited; the years 1950–1952 were more significant, when electric lighting was installed. During these years, concerns grew over preserving the ice cover, as the reconstruction damaged the cave and air began circulating inside again. This threatened to melt the ice sheet. Fortunately, the issues were resolved.

An educational trail with interesting information boards leads to the cave. Right before entering the cave, you will become acquainted with the Nízke Tatry National Park and its flora and fauna. The tour route inside the cave is 650 meters long with an elevation gain of 48 m. The tour will take you three quarters of an hour. Dress warmly, due to the ice decoration, the temperature inside stays just above freezing year-round. If you can brave the cold, the cave will reward you with an unprecedented spectacle. Underground, you will admire stalactites and stalagmites, as well as floor ice and ice pillars, which are at their most massive during the spring months.

Eight species of bats have been recorded in the cave. The discovery of bones belonging to the cave bear and other vertebrates proves that it was sought after by animals even in the distant past.

Demänovská dolina is full of other attractions. After exploring Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa, you can head to the neighboring Demänovská jaskyňa slobody. Continuing up the valley, you will reach Jasná, the largest ski resort in Slovakia. But you will not be bored here in summer either. The cable car will take you up to the peak of Chopok, and from there, for instance, to Hotel Srdiečko, which is just a hop away from another famous cave Jaskyňa Mŕtvych netopierov.

You will see the Vysoké Tatry with the unmistakable Kriváň, the Západné Tatry, and the Chočské vrchy on the northwestern side. The western side reveals the Veľká Fatra, while the southern side reveals the ridge of the Nízke Tatry. The highlight of the view is an exceptional vista of Liptovský Mikuláš and the Liptovská Mara water reservoir.

The dominant feature of the summit is the military memorial and cemetery Háj-Nicovô. More than 1,350 fallen heroes rest here. Their graves are arranged along the sides of a monumental staircase. Right by the bottom steps are sculptures, one symbolizing peace and victory, the other depicting an oath to the battle flag. After reaching the top step, you arrive directly in front of the centerpiece of the memorial, a pylon with several reliefs and a five-pointed star at its top.

You can reach the top of Háj along the paved Cesta generála R. Kunu road, which is also known as Cesta hrdinov. Passanger cars and bicycles are permitted on it, but you will also find pedestrians and often mothers with strollers there. In winter, the road is not maintained. However, a forest route via the Príroda a krajina educational trail, which copies the Vojenská história trail, is very popular among locals. In addition to walking, exploring nature, and learning about history, there is much more to do at Háj. You can play sports or spend time with children at an original wooden playground, and you can also find the first Slovak eco-friendly clay target shooting range here.

The Príroda a krajina educational trail is 1.3 km long, has an elevation gain of 140 m, and is marked with a green hiking trail marker. The ascent to Háj via this trail represents a walk along a deep-sea floor. More than 45 million years ago, Liptov was submerged under the sea, as evidenced by various fossils. In the insect hotel, you can admire the fascinating world of insects; however, on the way to it, you will first pass through a mixed forest with a rare specimen, a black poplar that is over 100 years old. The end of the trail is a sweet finishing touch, as there are stairs of time located there. They show a cross-section of the geological bedrock of the Liptovská kotlina basin, going back to 460 million years ago.

The Vojenská história educational trail is 0.47 km long and is a flat walk along a red hiking trail marker. Educational boards inform about troops and weapons, as well as the subsequent restoration of the devastated territory, as bloody battles of World War II took place here. The memorial area, to which the educational trail leads, was made accessible in 1961 along with the memorial and cemetery. It is the final resting place of battle victims, and since 2018, it has also served as a Pomník novodobým vojnovým veteránom (Monument to Modern War Veterans). This stands as a tribute to soldiers who died while fulfilling duty assignments in foreign missions and operations.

You can also run up to the summit of Háj; there are even two routes named after well-known Slovak athletes and natives of Liptovský Mikuláš. The blue route of whitewater slalom canoeist Michal Martikán is 5.3 km long with an elevation gain of 175 m. The yellow route of alpine skier Petra Vlhová is 3.3 km long with an elevation gain of 140 m. Both routes are classified as moderately demanding. The total length of the ski slopes is 1,130 metres. These are divided among all difficulty levels. In the lower section, there are two lifts intended exclusively for beginners. Easy blue slopes are available for them, where they can learn their first metres on skis under the supervision of ski instructors.

For everyone else, two additional lifts are available. The shorter one also offers the option of a descent along a blue slope, while the longer one is for more experienced skiers. The upper part of this slope is even designated black and, thanks to its incline, presents a challenge even for seasoned skiers.

When people hear "Chopok", most answer without hesitation "Jasná". However, this third-highest peak (2,023.6 m a.s.l.) of the Nízke Tatry mountains offers much more than just great skiing on perfectly groomed slopes. It is located in the geomorphological sub-region of Ďumbierske Tatry, on the main ridge at the border of the Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions, on the boundary between the districts of Brezno and Liptovský Mikuláš.

Chopok is often just a transfer station before continuing a hike further. The most common steps of hikers lead from it to Ďumbier and to Chata M. R. Moreover, Chopok is considered one of the windiest places in Slovakia. The average wind speed reaches 9.3 m/s, and on April 14, 1988, a speed of up to 51 m/s was measured, which translates to more than 180 km/h!

Chopok is a sought-after peak by tourists in both summer and winter, which it owes not only to its breathtaking panoramic view, but also to its great accessibility. Hikers can comfortably ride up right below the summit by cable car from both the northern and southern sides. In the Liptov village of Dúbrava, nestled in the picturesque nature of Nízke Tatry, the Guardian of the Forest (Strážca lesa) stands guard over the entrance to the forests and mines in Dúbravská dolina. Rooted to the ground, the statue is made almost entirely of wood, only subtly supported by a metal structure. It symbolizes Perun, the Slavic god of thunder and lightning. In the past, mining activity flourished in Dúbravská dolina, leaving many residents with health consequences, but above all, it was responsible for one of the largest ecological disasters in Slovakia in 2019. The spacious village of Bobrovec is located just a few minutes by car or bus from the town of Liptovský Mikuláš. From Bobrovec, you can comfortably reach Bobrovecká dolina on foot, by bicycle, or by car, which you can leave at the free parking lot in Bobrovecká Vápenica. Others can use the bus service, which will take you to the village of Jalovec, approximately 2 km above Bobrovec, and continue your half-day hike on foot.

From the aforementioned Bobrovecká Vápenica, a renovated asphalt road with a gentle incline leads to the waterfall, which is also known as Poľovnícky vodopád or Bobrovecký vodopád. Approximately halfway along the route, at the edge of the forest, the ascent becomes gentler or almost flat. Initially, majestic peaks of the Západné Tatry rise before you, such as Babky or Sivý vrch. Later along the way, you can enjoy nearby meadows, pastures, and, with good visibility, a view of the Vodná nádrž Liptovská Mara.

After about three quarters of an hour, you will arrive at your destination. The waterfall is located less than 100 m from the road. You do not have to worry about missing this natural beauty. In front of the waterfall stands a hunting cabin that welcomes you to this sought-after attraction with its motto "Hore zdar!". The approach to the waterfall has an uphill character, but your reward will be the Stará voda stream falling from a height of 12 m. A small pool has formed beneath the rocky cliff down which the waterfall flows. Although the icy water may initially deter you, believe that after a walk, especially on hot summer days, a quick dip is a great refreshment. The braver ones can enjoy the power of a mountain shower directly under the waterfall. In winter, the swift flow of water turns into a massive icefall. The snow-covered and frozen surrounding nature holds a unique charm. So do not forget to bring a sled for your walk, which you will especially use on the return trip and the gentle descent back to Bobrovecká Vápenica.

Cyclists can continue along a popular cycling route that will take you all the way to the village of Liptovské Matiašovce. Hikers on foot will return along the same route. Halfway between Bobrovecká Vápenica and the village of Bobrovec stands the traditional Salaš Pastierska. Stop for a moment and, in addition to traditional products such as cheeses, bryndza (sheep milk cheese), or žinčica (boiled sheep whey), enjoy the peaceful nature. Right above Bobrovec, you can stop by a small but popular water reservoir. Originally, the reservoir served to irrigate the surrounding fields. The Bejvoč water reservoir, as the locals nickname it, has been used for swimming for a few decades, although bathing is at your own risk. Get out of the car, put on your ski boots, step into your skis, and head straight to the slopes. Jasná is exceptional because it offers long kilometers of trails of all difficulty levels. In Záhradky, you will mostly find medium-difficulty (red) slopes, but there is also a blue, least demanding trail.

One ski lift and two modern chairlifts lead directly from Záhradky. Equipment with windshield covers protecting against the wind is taken for granted. One of the chairlifts leads to Rovná hoľa, a quieter yet even more beautiful corner of Jasná. The second one takes you directly into the heart of the resort, to Priehyba, at an altitude of 1,342 meters above sea level. This is where the famous funitel funicular/cable car is located, leading all the way to the top of Chopok. From Záhradky, you can reach an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level with just a single transfer. Another chairlift runs above Záhradky, coming from the previous park-and-ride car park at Lúčky.

If you head from Záhradky to Rovná hoľa, you have a choice of two slopes to ski back down. Intermediate skiers will choose the red one, and beginners the blue one. If that isn't enough for you, you can extend your descent all the way to Lúčky. The cable car to Priehyba is for more demanding skiers. From there, you can return to Záhradky via either two red slopes or one black slope for the most experienced skiers.

Down at the bottom of the slopes, a full range of facilities awaits you: snack bars, a restaurant, a rental shop, a ski school, and a sports clothing store. In short, complete equipment and services. And remember, Záhradky is just an entry point to the resort center, where even more awaits you.

A short distance from the ticket office where you buy your passes, there is a modern and beautiful hotel. In front of it stands the valley station of the cable car. It will certainly catch your eye immediately upon arrival; its black and orange design is simply unmistakable. And it is thanks to it that you will discover the high-quality slopes of Otupné.

The cable car will comfortably take you from an altitude of 1,141 meters above sea level to nearly 300 meters higher, where an approximately 2 km long slope begins. The cable car, named after the adjacent hotel, Grandjet, is fast, comfortable, and thanks to the orange glass, you will feel like it is beautifully sunny outside. Even when it is cloudy.

The slope from Brhliská to Otupné is marked in blue, so it is suitable for beginners or children. It is sufficiently wide, and you do not have to worry about the safety of your little one. A few meters of the slope are red, of intermediate difficulty, but this section can be bypassed by a gentler slope. Moreover, you will find ski schools in the resort, and if you do not dare to go alone, you can head to Otupné with an experienced instructor.

In addition to the modern cable car, you will also find short lifts here. They come in handy when you don't want to return all the way down to the parking lots. At Otupné, there is a unique view of the massive rocky ridge of the Nízke Tatry mountains, the Chopok peak itself, and, of course, the Derešský kotol basin.

Until now, it may have seemed that if you are a more experienced skier, you have no reason to go to Otupné. Wrong. In the resort, you will find a pair of slopes. Both are marked in blue, making them a favorite choice mainly for families with children and beginner skiers. One of the slopes measures 400 metres and the second one 450 metres. Together, you have nearly a kilometre of slopes available.

Judge for yourself: 45 kilometers of slopes, 2 gondolas, 7 chairlifts, 15 ski lifts, and one of the world's unique attractions: a funitel on the northern side. It is the most modern and fastest type of gondola lift you can encounter. A single cabin can accommodate up to 24 skiers. And the total capacity of the resort? Jasná is divided into two parts, which were successfully connected precisely thanks to the funitel. Into the more extensive and better-known northern side, and the beautiful, less touched southern side. It is precisely the southern side we will look at today.

The southern slopes of Chopok, especially in the area called Kosodrevina, are only for the best and most experienced skiers. This part of the resort is located between the peak of Chopok and the Horský hotel Kosodrevina mountain hotel. All slopes in this area are black, the most demanding. If you are not confident on skis, don't even try it here. Due to their steep incline, the slopes on the southern side are groomed less frequently than those in the north. Be prepared for that, but when fresh snow falls, skiing at Kosodrevina is perhaps the best skiing experience in the country. The slopes here are serviced by 3 ski lifts and, above all, a brand-new 15-passenger gondola leading from the Kosodrevina hotel at an altitude of 1,495 meters above sea level directly to the summit of Chopok.

On the southern slope of Chopok, at Kosodrevina, you will find numerous steep chutes that will be appreciated especially by freeride enthusiasts. Riding through pristine, untouched powder will become an addiction, and you will never want to stop. Modern and wide ski slopes, super-fast cable cars, but also mysterious nooks of the resort that remind one of the good old days of the skiing era. One such nook is the Srdiečko area on the southern slopes of Chopok.

You won't find many resorts that resemble the ski courses of your youth with their atmosphere. You might be surprised, but you will find exactly such places in Jasná. If you get tired of tens of kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes on the northern side, where unfortunately there is almost always a large number of people, head to the south. You will be taken to the top of Chopok by a modern funitel. Steep black slopes await you here. Once you manage this section, you will reach Srdiečko.

There is a well-known mountain hotel here, where you will certainly make many new friends. A friendly atmosphere and a wonderful panorama of the mountains are the best things you could wish for during a ski stay. You will have majestic Chopok right in the palm of your hand and a chairlift right under your windows. You can get to Kosodrevina by this lift, from where a modern high-capacity cable car leads all the way to the top of Chopok.

The slopes at Srdiečko are also inclined towards less experienced skiers, although absolute beginners should look somewhere else. The slope leading along the chairlift also has challenging sections. The part west of Srdiečko is somewhat gentler. You will find classic ski lifts here, where there is almost always a minimum of people. This red-marked slope belongs to the longest descents in Slovakia. You should definitely try it; it is an unmistakable experience directly from the top of Chopok.

One of the less known nooks of the southern side of Chopok close to Srdiečko is Dereše. An older ski lift leads to a height of approximately 2000 meters above sea level. Dereše are interesting not only for their natural beauty but also for a beautiful slope with open terrain where you don't have to worry about queues of people. You will feel like in a movie with professional skiers. If you visit Jasná, don't just ski on the northern side. The southern side has a completely different atmosphere, and many will like it more than the more commercial northern side.

Srdiečko is very easily accessible; a classic road even leads here. You can get here from the direction of Tále. In addition to traffic accessibility, one unique attraction is located nearby, the Jaskyňa Mŕtvych netopierov (Cave of Dead Bats). You won't find groomed trails or artificial lighting here. As an adventurer, a caver, you will set off into the dark depths and discover all the underground beauties by the light of a carbide lamp.

You can stay directly at the Horský hotel Srdiečko (Srdiečko Mountain Hotel), from which a chairlift leads and several slopes end here. Vodná nádrž Hrabovo was originally built for cotton mills as a water supply. Today, the artificial lake Hrabovo is a place of relaxation. On the shores of the lake, there are maintained grassy beaches; however, the water is relatively cold. Swimming is permitted only at your own risk. You can go boating here to your heart's content throughout the summer, and there is also a rental service for paddle boats as well as adrenaline attractions. Have you tried aquazorbing yet? Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you can also try out the “water bird” an aquaskipper that needs no motor. Once you learn to control it, you hop across the water on it like a bird. And rest assured, you will get a workout doing it.

When the cable car to the Malinô Brdo hill was built, the Hrabovo valley became a starting point for skiing. At the same time, it serves as an entry gateway to the Veľká Fatra National Park. Water from the lake is currently also used for snowmaking at the Ski Park Ružomberok Malinô Brdo ski resort. In the warm season, the ski park transforms into Bike Park Malinô Brdo. Cyclists from all over the world come here for downhill mountain biking. Biker camps and the MTB Championships (mountain downhill biking) take place here as well.

Last but not least, the greatest attraction is certainly the Lanový park Tarzania Hrabovo rope park or Zipline Hrabovo Ružomberok. Located here is the longest zip-line wire ride in Slovakia. Slide across Vodná nádrž Hrabovo and your adrenaline rush is guaranteed. For families with children, the smaller Tarzania rope course between the trees is ideal. You can rent equipment here, and your little ones can safely try climbing.

Lake Hrabovo is a popular spot for fishermen. Fishing is allowed here with a valid fishing permit purchased from the Slovenský rybársky zväz (Slovak Fishing Association). You can catch fish in a quieter part, in the shade of the forest, and fully enjoy this peaceful sport.

Vlkolínec is a settlement located beneath the Sidrovo peak, which is currently a folk architecture reservation listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The settlement of Vlkolínec is a local administrative part of the town of Ružomberok in the Žilina Region. You can reach it by turning off the road between Ružomberok and Banská Bystrica. However, you can also get to the settlement via paths and trails from almost every direction. The open-air museum is unique in that even today, some of the houses are permanently or temporarily inhabited, making it necessary for tourists to visit only marked exhibitions.

In written sources, Vlkolínec is directly mentioned for the first time in 1461. Another important date was January 26, 1977, when the government of the Slovak Socialist Republic, aiming to protect the cultural value of the site, decided that the settlement would become a folk architecture reservation. Finally, a third significant event took place on December 11, 1993, when Vlkolínec was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

The settlement's buildings currently consist of forty-five homesteads, comprising wooden residential houses as well as farm buildings. Since the structures were built on a steep slope, builders leveled the uneven mountain terrain using a so-called a stone foundation. Upon this, they laid hewn logs of coniferous trees. The walls were treated with colorful lime wash, which is a unique Vlkolínec feature. For the roofs, they also utilized what was most abundant in the surrounding area, wood, from which they crafted shingles. Most residential houses consist of three rooms: an entrance hallway (pitvor, used as a kitchen), a pantry (komora, a storage space), and a main room (izba, serving as both a living space and a bedroom).

Besides residential houses, there are other important buildings located in Vlkolínec. Probably the oldest structure in the settlement is the belfry, built in 1770. The belfry, which, just like the houses, consists of a stone foundation and a wooden superstructure, served three times a day as a time signal, while its tolling summoned residents to religious services and alerted them to fires and other dangers. The dominant feature in the center of the settlement is a 12-meter-deep well from 1860, from which all residents of Vlkolínec drew drinking water. Important buildings also include Kostol Navštívenia Panny Márie (Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary) from 1875 and the former school building.

In the meadows surrounding Vlkolínec, visitors can see so-called hay barns, where hay was stored for the winter and brought down only later as needed. Near the settlement, one can encounter several water springs, some of which yield drinking water.

The foothills of Západné Tatry are interesting for more than just downhill skiers. For cross-country skiers, long kilometers of groomed trails are available.
