Matica slovenská offers the opportunity to visit exhibitions and museum displays at its workplaces. The original headquarters, the so-called budova Matice slovenskej, built from the donations of Slovaks according to the design of Ján Nepomuk Bobula, is a national cultural monument. Its visit should not be missed by literature lovers. Inside, you will find the permanent exhibition of the Slovenské národné literárne múzeum. The exhibition in the Dom Jozefa Cígera Hronského v Martine is located in the writer's house, depicting his life and works. Get to know Jozef Cíger Hronský through a modern panel exhibition entitled „Jozef Cíger Hronský Život bez oddychu“, which will charm you with its design. The writer's house is also home to the Krajanské múzeum, which connects Slovaks living abroad with Slavic Maticas. In addition to the exhibition on the life and work of Hronský, it engages in publishing, cultural, and promotional activities.

The establishment of Matica slovenská dates back to the second half of the 19th century. In the past, it provided support to Slovak students and scientists in the form of scholarships and loans, and established new domestic and international cooperations and contacts. Behind its establishment and activities stand many prominent Slovak figures such as Michal Miloslav Hodža, Jozef Miloslav Hurban, Ján Francisci, Štefan Marko Daxner, Viliam Pauliny-Tóth, Adolf Dobriansky, and others. Matica slovenská covers collecting and publishing activities, creates conditions for versatile education, and supports cultural activities for a full social life. Every third year, Matica slovenská organizes the Matičný svetový festival slovenskej mládeže, where young people from all over the world gather.

Lyžiarske stredisko Jasenská dolina

Lyžiarske stredisko Jasenská dolina

Belá-Dulice

Are you a beginner skier looking for a ski resort where you can slowly, step by step and without worries, improve your skills? Or are you looking for a suitable place for a winter vacation with young children? Then you need a ski resort with gentle, well-maintained slopes, a complete range of services, and good transport accessibility.

It is Jasenská dolina. It lies at the foot of Veľká Fatra, just a few kilometers from Martin. Thanks to the nearby highway, transport is not a problem. All you need to do is head to the village of Belá – Dulice and you are there.

Jasenská dolina consists of two ski resorts. First, you will come across the Kašová resort, located right at the entrance of the valley. Here you will find a large-capacity parking lot where you can leave your car and head out for winter fun. The resort is located approximately 2.5 km from the village of Belá – Dulice, but a well-maintained road leads here.

What does Kašová offer? Snack bars, ski schools, rental shop, up to 7 km of cross-country skiing trails, and high-quality service. In short, everything you will need during your skiing trip. And now onto the main thing, the slopes. These are predominantly blue, which means the least demanding. There are only two sections where the slope is steeper. It is an ideal terrain for families with children and inexperienced skiers. Transport is handled by 6 ski lifts and 1 four-seater chairlift, so you can forget about long queues. The chairlift in particular has contributed to improving the skiing quality, and with a length of almost 650 meters, it is the resort's longest transport facility. The longest slope in this section is exactly 800 meters long. The entire resort is equipped with artificial snowmaking and is even fully illuminated. You will spend time on skis not only during the days, but during the evenings as well.

If you are a more demanding skier and the slopes of Kašová are not steep enough, continue along Jasenská dolina for about one more kilometer. This is where the Lehota resort is located. However, check in advance whether it is open, as there is only one 700-meter-long lift here and the resort does not have artificial snowmaking. You must therefore rely solely on natural snow. In favorable conditions, medium-difficulty slopes await you, the longest of which reaches up to 1,100 meters. This will be appreciated by more experienced skiers as well.

Between the two resorts, Lehota and Kašová, there are beautiful trails for cross-country skiers. Furthermore, the surrounding nature of Veľká Fatra directly invites you to explore it. Borišov and Ploská are popular tourist attractions throughout the year. In winter, you can try them with ski touring skis or snowshoes, for example. In Jasenská dolina, you will discover the magic of winter hiking.

Right in Jasenská dolina, there are simple cottages and guesthouses tailor-made for skiers. You will be close to the slope, enjoy a warm grog in the evening, and make many new friends. Some may prefer accommodation right in the village; in that case, additional accommodation options are available in Belá – Dulice. Regardless of whether you decide to visit Jasenská dolina for just a day or longer, you will enjoy its slopes like royalty.

Ferrata HZS – Martinské hole is a real treat for adrenaline-seeking hikers. It is situated in the beautiful setting of the wild canyon of Pivovarský potok in Martinské hole, in the Malá Fatra mountain range. It is accessible to tourists from the district town of Martin, from the Stráne locality. The ferrata, which boasts the title of the oldest in Slovakia, offers two passage variants of varying difficulty. Therefore, it is popularly visited by both beginners and more experienced hikers. If you have already walked this location in the past, certainly do not be discouraged. It is constantly being improved and modernized. Your reward will be truly breathtaking natural scenery.

The via ferrata in Martinské hole is connected to an interesting hiking trail. It starts from the bus stop Martin, Stráne following the red hiking trail mark leading along an asphalt road. After some time of walking, this road merges into a beautiful small forest, whose idyllic atmosphere is enhanced by a babbling stream. Its banks are connected by wooden bridges. Along the way, the natural scenery blends from gorges to open space offering beautiful views of the entire valley.

The entrance to the ferrata itself is marked by a board. Here, you put on your ferrata gear and continue with one of the two passage variants. The category A/B ferrata is intended for beginners who are just getting acquainted with this popular sport. If you count yourself among the more experienced adrenaline hikers, you can confidently choose the B/C version. In the first section of the ferrata, you will pass secured sections that will alternate with an unsecured path. Roughly halfway along your route, you will tackle a real treat, two rope bridges located high above the ground. Right here is the spot where you will enjoy breathtaking views and tell yourself that this hike is truly worth it. Afterwards, the ferrata divides into the B and C variants. All the way to the top, you will climb alongside a long stream that transforms into waterfalls in some places. Most of the route leads along iron rungs alongside a safety cable.

The ferrata is one-way. You can return down on a mountain scooter, which you can rent in Martinské hole, or on foot. The top of the ferrata is even accessible by car. If your strength runs out, you can arrange comfortable transport for the return trip. Tackling the entire route on foot will take you 4–5 hours. Winter Park Martinky

Winter Park Martinky

Martin

Do you love skiing on slopes from which you can see tens of kilometers into the distance? Do you dislike narrow trails nearly inside a forest and want to feel truly comfortable while skiing? Winter Park Martinky brings all this and more, a ski resort with a long tradition.

Martinské hole tower directly above the city of Martin, which offers the most ideal access to them. They are located in the central part of the Lúčanská Malá Fatra mountains, one of the most famous mountain ranges in Slovakia. They are famous far and wide for their excellent snow conditions. While other resorts pray for enough snow, at Martinské hole they could give it away. No wonder, as their lower boundary is at an altitude of up to 1,150 meters above sea level and the upper one is about 300 meters higher. You will certainly experience an incredible natural spectacle called an inversion at the top of Martinské hole.

This once-overlooked ski resort is experiencing its second rebirth. The rising interest in freeriding—skiing in open, natural terrain—has played a part in this. Due to the abundance of snow and open spaces, Martinské hole is one of the most sought-after resorts of all.

For other skiers, a relatively large ski resort awaits; by our standards, 8 km of slopes is a respectable figure. You will find a modern chairlift here, along with 5 other ski lifts. The difficulty of the slopes is designed very reasonably, with the easiest blue and moderately difficult red trails in approximate balance. On the longest slope, you will enjoy a descent approximately 2 kilometers long, which will delight even more demanding skiers. Artificial snowmaking is a matter of course, even though just a few years ago, "Martinky" had to make do with only natural snow.

A snowboard park, buffets, and bars are also available to you here, where you can warm up with a good grog. We repeatedly draw your attention to the beautiful nature. You will see two-meter-high snowdrifts and trees laden with heaps of snow—just like in old films—only in a few places these days. At Martinské hole, it is a common phenomenon.

Transport accessibility, beautiful nature, and excellent skiing conditions are the main advantages of the resort. You will certainly want to spend more days here and discover not only the official slopes but also the beautifully hidden terrain. Therefore, set aside several days that you can spend in one of the many cottages directly by the slopes. Mountain hotel, guest house, tourist hostel, or private lodging—it does not matter what you choose; as long as you have good company, you are guaranteed not to be bored. Martinské hole simply will not allow it.

Blatnica

This cave is mainly known to hikers who have climbed the Tlstá peak at least once. So put on your hiking boots and discover all the beauty of Veľká Fatra.

The Veľká Fatra mountain range is also sought after for the very interesting Jaskyňa Mažarná. It is located at an altitude of 930 m a.s.l. It is situated roughly in the first third of the ascent to the aforementioned peak, about 3 km from the nearest parking lot. Therefore, if you want to take a break and admire the underground beauty, be sure to include it in your full-day trip itinerary.

The cave itself is not very large, reaching a total length of 130 meters. Inside, you can admire impressive weathered flowstone decorations consisting of thick stalagnite columns, flowstone pools, and soft flowstone in white, yellowish, and beige colors. Its uniqueness also lies in the narrow crevices and fissures created by water action, which give it a distinct character. The cave has two passages, the Garnet Passage (Granátová chodba, named after garnet finds from the SNP) and the Column Passage (Stĺpová chodba), behind which lies the Pool Hall (Jazierková sieň).

An interesting fact about the cave is that it was inhabited by humans in the Bronze Age. The cave thus ranks among the highest-altitude inhabited caves in Slovakia. It is especially worth seeing during the winter season. This is precisely because the cave becomes a home for bats at that time. Note that remains of the cave bear were also found here.

If you choose only the cave as your destination, you can reach it via a 4 km yellow-marked trail from the village of Blatnica through Vápenná dolina. You do not have to worry about any entrance fee or opening hours. The cave is freely accessible. While exploring it, you may notice one of the rock overhangs that reminds many of the half-open mouth of a large animal. Take our advice. It is ideal to book accommodation near Jaskyňa Mažarná. Blatnický hrad

Blatnický hrad

Blatnica

Have you heard the legend about the young man Blatoň, who saved two lives – those of Prince Mojmír and Pribina? This very legend is tied to Blatnický hrad. If you plan a trip to Gaderská dolina, that is, to the Veľká Fatra mountains, you should definitely visit the village of Blatnica. Right above it, at an altitude of 658 m a. s. l., on a steep hill separating Gaderská dolina from Turčianska kotlina, stands the castle.

The castle as such stands in its place to this day. Enthusiasts dedicated to its preservation and restoration strive to carry out numerous cleaning and reconstruction works. The masonry of the western tower is preserved at the castle, towering to a great height. The upper castle was set between two towers. In the lower castle, the corner block masonry as well as the remnants of building walls are preserved.

The history of Blatnický hrad dates back to the year 1300, when its first owner was Peter of Brezovica. It was built on the popular trade route magna via. The last mention of it being inhabited was from the year 1790, after which it gradually fell into ruin and decayed. After all, princes preferred a more comfortable lifestyle in a manor house rather than in a castle.

Many tales and legends are connected with the castle as such. One of the popular ones includes the one about the young man Blatoň. This young man saved the lives of Pribina and Mojmír during a hunt for aurochs. When the improperly hit animal charged at these two prominent figures, Blatoň rushed at it and killed it with a dagger. For saving their lives, he received a beautiful sword and land for the future castle. Other legends include the one about a cruel castle lord who, after seizing another man's bride and growing tired of her, had her killed and walled her son into the castle. The child's crying can still be heard today within the castle walls. Or about the Templars who walled up a monk in the castle. Supposedly, treasure hunters found a walled-up male skeleton in the ruins of the castle. Who knows who it belonged to and whether these legends are true.

The castle as such is truly very interesting and shrouded in a veil of mysteries from the past. No wonder, as prominent families such as the House of Luxembourg or the Révay family lived here. If you want to come and see it in person and experience its atmosphere, be sure to choose a suitable route. A yellow hiking trail leads to the castle. The shortest route is across the meadow below the castle in the village of Blatnica. From Blatnica through Gaderská dolina, it is less than 2 km to the first forester's lodge, then another 15 minutes along an unmarked trail. Choose the right route and explore the castle in person.

Every ruin, such as Blatnický hrad, is accessible at your own risk. Hiking shoes are therefore recommended. After such a wonderfully spent walk, you can head into the village and choose accommodation near Blatnický hrad. You will thus extend your stay and get to know the amazing surroundings perfectly. You can enjoy the beauties of the underground in Jaskyňa Mažarná. A day full of fun is guaranteed for you in Lanový park. Right in the village, you can book cottages in Blatnica or private accommodation in Blatnica. The offer of accommodation is rich.

Šútovský vodopád

Šútovský vodopád

Šútovo

With a height of 38 metres, Šútovský vodopád waterfall is the fourth highest waterfall in Slovakia and the highest in Malá Fatra. You will get a view of it when visiting Krivánska Fatra in Národný park Malá Fatra. The waterfall is located on the boundary between granites and granodiorites, at an altitude of 830 m above sea level, near the village of Šútovo, in the district of Martin in the Žilinský kraj region.

Šútovský potok stream, whose waters feed Šútovský vodopád, originates in Mojžišove pramene, a remarkable rock formation. The width of the stream right above the waterfall reaches up to 2.5 metres. The waterfall was formed as a result of the uplift of the mountain range and the subsequent subsidence of Turčianska kotlina.

This majestic waterfall certainly belongs among the most beautiful ones our country has to offer. On a hot summer day, its immediate surroundings offer a pleasant cooling down. And the scent of mountain nature all around. Coming here is worth it for that alone.

You can reach the waterfall via the blue hiking trail, heading past Mojžišove pramene in the opposite direction from Chata pod Chlebom. The hike, which can be easily managed even by children, follows an educational trail through Šútovská dolina with a length of 3.7 km. After parking near Chata Fatranka, you will walk all the way to the waterfall. Half of the walk, which takes about 1.5 hours, leads along an asphalt road, while the second half follows a stony path with a very gentle incline.

You can also make your stay in the area more enjoyable by visiting other attractions in Šútovo and its surroundings. For instance, Šútovské jazero lake certainly ranks among them. Swimming in the lake can then be easily combined with a hike to Šútovský vodopád, as the hiking trail leads right from the lake. We recommend booking accommodation on the accommodation Šútovo or accommodation Martin pages, studying the options the surroundings offer you, and then simply enjoying your stay.

Šútovské jazero

Šútovské jazero

Šútovo

Šútovské jazero, also known as Kraľovianske jazero, is actually a flooded quarry located in the village of Kraľovany, near Šútovo. It lies beneath the peaks of the Malá Fatra mountains, practically on the main route between Martin and Ružomberok. There is a large designated parking area by the lake, which is free of charge.

Since the lake was formed by flooding a quarry, it has no inflow or outflow. The beautiful turquoise water reaches depths of up to 15 meters. Šútovské jazero is often referred to as the "Slovak Plitvice" because the surrounding terraced slopes resemble this Croatian park, which you may know from western movies such as The Treasure of Silver Lake. Although the quarry is a popular recreation spot for both local and international tourists, swimming is at your own risk. At the lake, you will find two larger beaches and a few smaller ones, one of which is fenced off and designated for nudism enthusiasts. Refreshment stands are available on some of the beaches.

After or before swimming, we also recommend a hike to Šútovské vodopád waterfall. The hiking trail leads directly from the lake, and the entire hike takes about 3 hours. You can also plan additional hikes to Veľký Kriváň and Veľký Rozsutec, or to any other corner of the Národný park Malá Fatra national park. If you prefer healing waters to swimming in the quarry, you can head to the Zlá voda travertine pool near Rojkov.

Whether you want to spend just a weekend relaxing by Šútovské jazero and exploring Malá Fatra, or stay longer, comfortable accommodation will come in handy. Look, for instance, for guesthouses in Kraľovany or cottages in Turany, Krpeľany, or Nolčovo. It is not far to Terchová either, where you can stay in cozy wooden cabins.

Národný park Veľká Fatra

Národný park Veľká Fatra

Martin

Národný park Veľká Fatra is the youngest Slovak national park. Territorial-wise, it belongs predominantly to the Žilinský kraj region, but it also extends into the northern part of the Banskobystrický kraj region. The national park as well as its buffer zone occupy most of the territory of the Veľká Fatra mountain range, which is part of the Outer Western Carpathians. However, the park also covers the southwestern part of the Starohorské vrchy mountains. Thanks to high precipitation and low evaporation, Národný park Veľká Fatra is an important source of drinking water, and for this reason, it has been declared a protected water management area since 1987.

Veľká Fatra - home of the capercaillie

Since 1972, the Chránená krajinná oblasť Veľká Fatra protected landscape area existed in this territory, which gained a higher level of protection when it was declared a national park on April 1, 2002. Up to 90% of the park's area is covered by beech forests and ridge pastures dating back to the period of the Wallachian colonization (15th to 17th century). Scots pine also occurs in the remaining territory, and Harmanecké údolie is the richest locality for the occurrence of the European yew in Central Europe. Veľká Fatra can also boast a rare endemic species - the Tatra cyclamen (cyklámen fatranský). It grows only in this area and in part of the Nízke Tatry. Thanks to the inaccessibility of some steep slopes, primeval forest ecosystems without human intervention are also found here. The rugged terrain and the diversity of meadows, pastures, cliffs, and valleys create conditions not only for rich flora but also for fauna. Bears, wolves, lynxes, and wildcats occur here in abundance. Highly endangered species of gallinaceous birds - the black grouse and the capercaillie - also live here.

The highest peak in the national park, at an elevation of 1,596 m above sea level, is Ostredok. Within the territory of Veľká Fatra, there are several dozen small-scale protected areas. National nature reserves include, for example, Jánošíkova kolkáreň or Rakšianske rašelinisko. Perlová jaskyňa is a national nature monument. Also interesting are the natural monuments Matejkovský kamenný prúd or Travertínové terasy Bukovinka. As a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area, Veľká Fatra is included in the European network of protected areas NATURA 2000.

From skiing straight to the open-air museum in Vlkolínec

Like most Slovak national parks, Veľká Fatra boasts karst areas, mostly caves, of which there are more than 530 here. Harmanecká jaskyňa is open to the public. Visitors can take a 1,020 m long tour route here, along which they can admire limestone decorations and vast domes. The cave is also important due to the large number of hibernating bats.

One cannot speak of Veľká Fatra without mentioning one of the most significant Slovak open-air museums, the settlement of Vlkolínec. It lies beneath the peak of Sídrovo and is even inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. The settlement consists of forty-five residential and farm buildings, with some still being inhabited. Also interesting are the so-called štále, or haylofts, in the surrounding area.

The Veľká Fatra mountain range offers plenty of opportunities for active leisure. In the summer, whole families will have fun in the fairytale village of Habakuky or in Donovalkovo, the capital of children. An active winter is best spent on the slopes, taken care of by ski resorts such as PARK SNOW Donovaly, Ski Park Malinô Brdo, or Snowland Valčianska dolina.

To discover at least a portion of the beauty of this region, several days are needed, so book your accommodation near the Národný park Veľká Fatra. You can look around, for example, for wooden cottages in Liptovské Revúce or chalets in Turčianske Jaseno. Quality private accommodation is offered by Staré Hory. In Donovaly, you will find almost all types of accommodation, from apartments and guesthouses to luxury hotels.

Kuneradský zámok

Kuneradský zámok

Kunerad

Kuneradský zámok is situated at the mouth of the Svitačová dolina valley, near the village of Kunerad. Standing guard over the valley at an altitude of 600 m above sea level, its surroundings are adorned with picturesque nature. Two fires in recent years damaged the chateau so severely that it is currently closed to the public. Despite this, it remains a frequently visited tourist attraction in the Rajecká dolina valley, mainly because hiking trails leading to the popular peaks of the Lúčanská part of Malá Fatra pass right next to it.

The new owners, who live in Switzerland, are striving to save the chateau and preserve this treasure for future generations. The ongoing restoration work can be observed from the adjacent chateau park and meadows, where you can enjoy a pleasant family walk. In the park, you will also find the Pamätník SNP (SNP Monument), which was renovated for the public in 2020.

Kuneradský zámok saw the light of day in 1912, originally serving as a hunting lodge for Count Ballestrem and his family, who used it primarily during the hunting season. The chateau was built with elements of French Art Nouveau. Towers, arcades, terraces, and exterior staircases gave this romantic building its charming appearance. The interior was also lavishly furnished, and the chateau even had its own water-powered power plant. The Count's family also established a chapel inside the chateau. During the Slovak National Uprising, the chateau was occupied by partisans and subsequently burned down by the Fascists. After reconstruction, the premises served as a treatment facility for the nearby Kúpele Rajecké Teplice spa.

You will surely be pleased to know that you can find pleasant accommodation near Kuneradský zámok. Cottages and guesthouses in Rajecké Teplice will fulfill your expectations to the point. In the nearby village of Kunerad, it is worth visiting the local healing spring on the way, colloquially named "Studnička Zuzička". The next day, you can visit Stratený budzogáň or head to Lietavský hrad. For some well-deserved relaxation, you can indulge yourselves in Kúpele Rajecké Teplice, and in the summer, you can enjoy the sunshine at the Termálne kúpalisko Laura thermal pool. Following the hiking trail from the chateau, you can reach Martinské hole and explore its hidden corners as well. Do not hesitate and discover this region during your holiday in Slovakia.

Národný park Malá Fatra

Národný park Malá Fatra

Varín

Národný park Malá Fatra is located in northern Slovakia in the Žilina Region, within the districts of Žilina and Dolný Kubín. The Malá Fatra mountain range is the fourth largest mountain range in Slovakia, and its peaks boast a high number of visiting tourists. This national park is a sought-after destination for winter skiing and summer walks through wonderful nature.

Malá Fatra was declared a national park quite late. Due to the impact of human encroachment, this area was designated a protected landscape area in 1967. It was not until 1988 that Malá Fatra qualified as a national park. Its administration is today located in the village of Varín, which is also the gateway to the park.

Malá Fatra consists of two parts: the Kriváň part and the Lúčky part (Krivánska Fatra and Lúčanská Fatra). Krivánska Fatra extends north of the Váh River. The highest peak and at the same time the highest peak of the entire Malá Fatra range is Veľký Kriváň, which sits at an altitude of 1,709 m above sea level. No less important peaks are Veľký Rozsutec (1,610 m above sea level) and Malý Kriváň (1,671 m above sea level). The Veľký Rozsutec peak itself is depicted on the emblem of Národný park Malá Fatra.

An ideal hike for both children and seniors

Many a hiker can boast of ascending the third highest peak of Malá Fatra, Chleb (1,646 m above sea level). It is part of the ridge hike of Krivánska Fatra and is easily accessible not only for hikers, but also for families with children or seniors, as they can reach it by cable car. The chairlift starts in Vrátna dolina and takes you from Snilovské sedlo up to the Chleb mountain. From there, you can admire views of Malá Fatra in all its beauty. The Vrátna Free Time Zone resort is an ideal place for skiing as well as adrenaline sports such as paragliding.

Another popular trip in Národný park Malá Fatra is Chata pod Chlebom (1,423 m above sea level). The mountain hut is accessible from the cable car in Vrátna dolina or along the marked hiking trail from the village of Šútovo. On the way to the hut, you can admire the 38-meter-high Šútovský vodopád waterfall or Mojžišove pramene, which spring from the rock wall of Krivánska Malá Fatra.

The second part of the national park, Lúčanská Fatra, lies on the southern side of Malá Fatra. This part is lower and less forested. In summer, hikers usually go on hikes from Fačkovské sedlo, from where they can reach the rocky peak Kľak (1,352 m above sea level). Here beneath it lies the beautiful 30-meter-high Kľacký vodopád waterfall. In winter, skiers will come into their own at the popular ski resort Martinské hole, near the town of Martin.

Malá Fatra will charm you not only with its diverse flora, where forests alternate with dwarf pine and primeval forest, but also with its fauna. Wolves, lynxes, and wildcats live here. A large population of the brown bear has also been confirmed. Be cautious during your walks, as you may come across a viper, grass snake, or fire salamander. Birds thrive here just as well. An attentive eye will spot a golden eagle or a falcon, and if you prick up your ears, you will hear a woodpecker tapping. In Národný park Malá Fatra, there are up to 29 animal species of European importance.

In the footsteps of Jánošík

The tourist center of Národný park Malá Fatra is Terchová. This picturesque village is known primarily thanks to the highwayman Juraj Jánošík. Here you will also find a system of gorges and canyons called Jánošíkove diery, which attract tourists from far and wide. Another visited village in Malá Fatra is the village of Zázrivá. Who wouldn't know Zázrivá korbáčiky? After all, local people have been making cheese since time immemorial. And we guarantee you that bryndzové halušky tastes different here too.
