Kúpalisko Rosnička

Kúpalisko Rosnička

Bratislava

On the edge of the Bratislava city district of Dúbravka, near Karlova Ves, you can relax surrounded by nature at the Rosnička summer swimming pool complex. This swimming pool is one of the most popular in our capital city, also thanks to its reasonable prices and the services provided.

At the eastern foothills of Devínska Kobyla, you can enjoy relaxing in the water in one of the 3 swimming pools during sunny days. The swimming pool opens its gates to visitors every year from mid-June to the end of August. Not only water sports enthusiasts feel fantastic in its premises. Swimmers can stretch their bodies in the large swimming pool measuring 50 x 25 m with a maximum water depth of 2.5 m. The middle pool is primarily for non-swimmers and visitors longing for rest. This pool is 50 x 25 m in size, and its depth is 1 m. Mothers, in particular, visit the children's circular pool with a depth of 0.4 m with their little ones. The water temperature in the pools ranges from 25 °C to 31 °C.

Older children have a great time on the large 50 m long triple slide, which clearly belongs to the biggest attractions of the swimming pool. It includes a landing pool. The main season is in the spirit of fun, and therefore a rich accompanying animation program has been created here. So, will you dare to exercise Zumba or another sport in the water?

You can send your children to the playground, where they can romp on climbing frames, swings, or by playing in the sandbox. A beach volleyball court is also available here. You can laze around on the manicured grass area, or rent a sun lounger and sunbathe directly on it. You can also sweat it out in the sauna. Perhaps feelings of hunger will come to you after these activities. The problem can be solved by visiting a snack bar, where "poolside" fast food will fill you up and chilled drinks will refresh you. Changing rooms and sanitary facilities are also part of the complex.

To enjoy the beauty of sunny days to the fullest, you do not have to head home immediately. In the capital city, you will find many more options for spending your free time. Runners choose the Areál orientačného behu pre verejnosť as their destination. Thanks to a map and a compass, you will be searching for control points in nature here, and besides this fun, you will enjoy a great sports experience. Less demanding is a walk along the marked trails of the Národná prírodná rezervácia Devínska Kobyla nature reserve. You can take your children for a ride on the artificial toboggan run or treat them to other attractions at KidsHouse. You can watch beautiful animals at the Zoologická záhrada Bratislava. Hrad Devín is among the popular places for walks. The Kaverna Kamzík 6 bunker was part of the ancient artillery defense system.

The offer of activities as well as accommodation facilities in Bratislava is diverse. Dračí hrádok

Dračí hrádok

Borinka

You can find the ruins of Dračia hrádok, also known as Hadí hrad, in the Malé Karpaty mountain range, on the Úboč hill, approximately 2 km from the village of Borinka. Its origins date back to the 13th century, when the owners of the former royal Hrad Pajštún were the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok. The royal origin is also suggested by the similarity of the tower at Dračia hrádok to towers at other royal castles (Hrad Beckov, Plavecký hrad).

This slowly disappearing castle awaits you hidden above the valley of Stupavský potok, at an altitude of 370 m above sea level. There is not much information about what the small castle looked like in the past. An engraving that probably depicts its appearance can be found in Mestská galéria v Bratislave. However, experts differ in their opinions, and there are those who reject this assumption.

The area of the small castle consists of two elevated parts, a central prismatic tower, and the remains of the masonry foundation for the entrance bridge. By all accounts, the small castle perished in the 15th century during the Hussite raids into the territory of Západné Slovensko. Furthermore, it was built on geologically unstable bedrock, which was likely one of the main reasons why it was no longer restored after being damaged.

An asphalt road from the village of Borinka, which continues onto a forest path, will lead you to the remains of the castle. After roughly 800 m, you will come across a small area suitable for parking a car. The yellow-marked trail will take you directly to the ruins after a moderately challenging ascent. From the ruins of Dračia hrádok, you can continue your exploration further and reach the ruins of Pajštúnsky hrad.

If the idea of such a hike excites you, book accommodation near Dračia hrádok today. Záhorie is full of hiking as well as cultural and historical sights well worth seeing. It is entirely up to you which direction you take. An unforgettable experience will surely be a scenic boat cruise on the Dunaj or a visit to Bratislavský hrad. We believe you will enjoy your time in Záhorie and take home plenty of great experiences.

Národná prírodná rezervácia Devínska Kobyla

Národná prírodná rezervácia Devínska Kobyla

Bratislava

The Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve is located in the Bratislava Region, between the city districts of Devín and Devínska Nová Ves. Its territory covers an area of 101.12 ha as part of the Devínska Kobyla Site of Community Importance (with an area of 643 ha, belonging to the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area). At the same time, the area is included in the NATURA 2000 network. A highly significant part of the area is the Štokerská vápenka nature reserve and the Sandberg paleontological site.

Formation and history of the Devínska Kobyla area

The territory has a long and rich history. The first settlements appeared here as early as the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC. Later, the highly important commercial Amber Road passed through here. Subsequently, the Celts entered the region and cleared the original vegetation. During AD, the Romans took control and established vineyards here. The area served as a fortress for Prince Rastislav during the Great Moravian Empire and witnessed battles against the Turks as well as the Napoleonic Wars. Until the mid-20th century, the area was mainly grazed by livestock, after which the meadows became overgrown with bushes and woody plants.

Devínska Kobyla is one of the parts of the western projection of the Carpathian arc, which is often referred to as a treasure trove of diverse geological phenomena. In its cross-section, we can find granite, as well as portions of limestone and dolomite. The area underwent various folding processes, erosion, and marine wave abrasion, resulting, for example, in a rock window or an abrasion cave. Between 14 and 16 million years ago, Devínska Kobyla was a rocky limestone coast of the Badenian Sea. This is evidenced by the Sandberg site, where fossils of about 350 animal species have been found.

The Sandberg site was discovered during sand mining for the needs of the Devínska Nová Ves brickworks. During the Tertiary period, this area was at times a cliff, at times part of a coastal island system, but also the seabed of the Tethys Ocean. Rich life flourished here, resulting in the fossil sites found today. Notable finds include gastropods, bivalves, sea urchins, shark teeth, and various bones—for example, from seals, rhinoceroses, bears, reptiles, moles, and Tertiary whales. Unique finds include the remains of Tertiary Pliopithecus (a distant human ancestor) and the teeth of Dryopithecus (an anthropoid ape).

Fauna and flora of the Devínska Kobyla reserve

The fauna of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve is richly represented by various animal species. Gastropods (such as Zebrina detrita, Chondrina clienta) can be found here in both xerophilic and thermophilic varieties. Be careful not to step on them. Insects (such as the European mantis or Saga pedo) are perhaps the most significant component of the surrounding fauna. Interestingly, only females of Saga pedo occur here in Slovakia; their reproduction occurs through unfertilized eggs. You will find more than 600 species of butterflies here (such as the Old World swallowtail or the Clouded Apollo). Beetles are also numerously represented (such as the stag beetle or Scarabaeus typhon), many of which are rare and protected. Vertebrates are also abundant here, represented by reptiles (such as the European green lizard or grass snakes) and amphibians (such as the European green toad or frogs). Avifauna is typical of the Bratislava region (such as goldfinches or tits), but we can also spot many rare species (such as the common kestrel or common buzzard). It is not unusual to encounter mammals as well, such as the red deer or roe deer, but also the wild boar or red fox.

The flora of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve has fascinated botanists since ancient times; Carolus Clusius was already exploring it in the 16th century. The southern part of the territory is mostly covered by grassy steppe with thermophilic grasses (such as Festuca rupicola) and many protected flowers (such as spring pheasant's eye or pasqueflower). Shallow soils formed by erosion are covered, for example, by rock buckthorn or feather grass. Their ability to bind and protect soil from erosion is highly valuable. The sandy slopes are dominated by the protected iris or the steppe relic Gypsophila fastigiata. Gullys are characterized by thermophilic shrubs (such as Mahaleb cherry or the protected European cornelian cherry) as well as rare orchids from the Orchidaceae family.

Just a stone's throw from the big city into nature

The area offers rich hiking opportunities that attract many visitors every year in all seasons. Marked hiking trails will take you to Weitov lom, Devín Castle, as well as through Úzky les to the Bratislava city district of Dúbravka or through Líščie údolie to the Bratislava city district of Karlova Ves. There, it is well worth visiting the Bratislava Zoo or the Bratislava Botanical Garden. Get inspired by other trip options offered on the website attraction of Bratislava.

Book your accommodation near the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve, for example on the websites accommodation Bratislava Devínska Nová Ves or accommodation Bratislava Devín. The unique atmosphere of the reserve will engulf you, and you won't even realize you are actually in a busy capital city. Come here to let go of all work stress as well as the anxieties or fears troubling you. Soak up the power of nature, listen to the birds singing, and smell the colorful flowers. Spending time in nature is therapy for the soul, and even an easy hike is therapy for the body. So why not treat yourself? We wish you a pleasant stay.

Primaciálny palác

Primaciálny palác

Bratislava

Did you know that Primaciálny palác in Bratislava – Staré Mesto is among the most sought-after attractions in Bratislava? This landmark takes the breath away of visitors and locals alike thanks to its architecture. The 18th-century Neoclassical palace is the current seat of the mayor of the capital of Slovakia, and its designated areas serve as exhibition spaces for the city gallery.

In the historical core of the city, Cardinal Jozef Batthyány had the most magnificent and largest palace of the Hungarian Kingdom era built. Under the guidance of Viennese architect Melchior Hefele, this vision was successfully completed in 1818. An extraordinarily impressive appearance, a fantastic location, and its historical moments multiply the value of the palace. In addition to coronations, the Peace of Pressburg was signed here in the 18th century. Today, the palace serves as the city hall.

The exterior of the palace is beautiful. Along with many elements, you can notice a unique façade, the stone coat of arms of Archbishop Batthyány, or admire colossal statues placed in a symmetrical arrangement alongside four vases. The Fontána sv. Juraja fountain in the courtyard will also capture your interest. Upon stepping inside, you will feel like you are in a fairytale. There are beautiful spaces of the picture gallery, period-furnished lounges, and views into the grand Zrkadlová sieň, which today is used for city council meetings, concerts, or other events. You can rent space for a wedding, reception, conference, coffee break, cocktail, banquet, wine reception, or a socially significant event.

The overall experience of the interior will be enhanced by Kaplnka sv. Ladislava. Come to a mass on one of the Sundays and experience your spiritual moment here. Among the most valuable exhibits of the palace is a set of 6 wall tapestries with a 17th-century mythological motif, located in 5 lounges of the northern palace wing. These English royal tapestries possess enormous value. Visit the premises of this former luxurious archbishop's residence during opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday and soak up its amazing atmosphere. You might even start considering ordering suitable accommodation near Primaciálny palác in Bratislava – Staré Mesto. After all, there is truly a lot to see in two or three days.

In the evening, you can go listen to many beautiful musical works by authors from all over the world at Slovenská filharmónia. Michalská brána

Michalská brána

Bratislava

The Bratislava city district of Staré Mesto attracts tourists as well as locals with many attractions, whether cultural, artistic, or historical. Each of them has its own story. Michalská brána is among them as well. It is the only preserved gate from the original four through which people once entered the fortification of medieval Bratislava.

It received its name from the settlement and church of St. Michael, which was located in front of the fortification. In the 16th century, it was demolished due to the Turks. The settlement is now recalled only by a pink gravestone incorporated into the masonry of the tower. It is visible upon entering it, from the inner side, at approximately the height of the third floor.

The tower was built at the end of the 14th century, but throughout its lifetime it underwent many renovations and alterations. It is a fascinating blend of various styles, as there is a noticeable Gothic influence in the lower part of the tower, the upper floors bear hints of the Renaissance, and the elegant tower with a bulbous dome originated during the Baroque period. In the past, a drawbridge, a drawbridge tower, and strong drawbridge gates were also part of it.

The massive tower soars to a height of 51 meters. Once, a trade route to Moravia led through its gate. Today, the marking of the historical coronation route passes through the gate. Balancing on its tip is a copper statue of the Archangel Michael slaying a dragon, created by Peter Eller. Over time, the statue was significantly damaged and was removed from the tower in 1845. During its repair, a box containing literal historical treasures was removed from it. Among others, a copper plate engraved with text about the author of the statue, banknotes and copper coins from the time of the statue's last repair, a list of city council members, and two pieces of parchment. One of them contained text written in Latin. It stated that the statue was crafted during the reign of Maria Theresa and repaired during the reign of Francis I. There was also a list of saints and their relics stored in a silver-plated box.

On the right side, right next to the gate, house number 15 is seemingly glued to Michalská veža. It is a rarity. With its width of 1.3 meters, it is likely the narrowest house in Bratislava, as well as in all of Europe. Another point of interest is the kilometer zero marker with compass points, displaying the distances to 29 European and world capitals. Furthermore, a laser beam is emitted from the southern window of the tower, indicating the route of the original Korzo promenade.

In the Middle Ages, bad deeds were punished in truly cruel ways. There were so-called cages of shame where the offender was placed. When the Bratislava cage of shame was removed and stored in the municipal depot, a pillory was erected in front of Michalská brána. The offender was hung on it with a large, heavy stone ball attached to their leg. Passersby could spit on them.

When you step out onto the balcony of Michalská brána, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the castle hill, the villa neighborhood on the hills, the historical city center, and the individual roofs and towers of Bratislava. Inside the tower is Múzeum zbraní. While climbing up the tower across seven floors, visitors will view medieval weapons and armor, tournament equipment, firearms, and an exhibition of all the crafts related to the defense of the medieval city.

Especially during exam periods, the surroundings of Michalská brána are often full of silently walking students. Rumor has it that if a lazy student manages to walk through the alley under the arches of Michalská brána without uttering a single word, they will surely pass their exam. Whether true or a myth, a large number of them try it every year.

When you come to admire the individual attractions in Bratislava, definitely do not miss Michalská brána, one of the iconic symbols of our capital city. However, not only this place deserves your attention, which is why we recommend making a multi-day trip to Bratislava. The pages accommodation Bratislava and specifically accommodation Bratislava Staré mesto will help you choose the right accommodation, leaving you only with planning your trip.

Letisko M. R. Štefánika

Letisko M. R. Štefánika

Bratislava

Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika is the largest airport in Slovakia and is located in Bratislava. You will find it just 9 km from the city center, in the city district of Bratislava - Ružinov, near the village of Ivanka pri Dunaji. Annually, it handles approximately 2 million passengers upon arrival and departure, records over 27,000 aircraft movements, and processes more than 26,000 tons of cargo.

The beginnings of regular air transport in Bratislava are connected with Czechoslovak State Airlines. The first flight took place on October 29, 1923, on the Prague – Bratislava route, using an Aero A.14 aircraft. The plane was then piloted by the chief pilot of Czechoslovak State Airlines, Karel Brabenec, and the first passenger was Václav König, an editor for Lidové noviny. The flight lasted approximately 3 hours and landed at the airport in Vajnory. Even then, it was clear that the proximity of the Malé Karpaty mountain range would be a limiting factor, so construction of Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika began in 1947.

Regular operation was launched in 1951. Terminal A – General Aviation Terminal (GAT) – handles private, business, and VIP passengers, as well as ambulance flights. Servicing is provided by 29 check-in desks located on the ground floor of the departures terminal. Terminal B is intended for arrivals and departures outside the Schengen Area countries, and Terminal C serves arrivals for aircraft from Schengen Area countries.

From Bratislava, you can fly to various popular destinations such as Dubai, Hurghada, London, Rome, and others. The airport's runway system consists of two perpendicular takeoff and landing runways with a concrete-cement surface, allowing the landing and movement of all aircraft types, from the smallest to the largest, such as the Boeing 747.

In the arrivals hall on the ground floor, in addition to check-in desks, there are also grocery stores, snack stands, and a newsstand. Additional airport services include a currency exchange office and ATMs, while passengers with disabilities are entitled to free assistance services. Luggage carts and luggage wrapping and weighing services are a matter of course. Parking is provided in parking lots P1 and P2.

If you are returning from vacation late at night, relax and book a short-term stay in our capital city. You can find accommodation near Letisko Milana Rastislava Štefánika on our page accommodation Bratislava. Diversify your itinerary and head into Staré Mesto (Old Town). Taste great gastro specialties in local restaurants and cozy cafés. Do not forget to take a nice photo with Čumil and the statue of Schöne Náci. Bratislava is full of amazing attractions worth visiting, so do not hesitate to extend your vacation. We wish you a pleasant stay and many new experiences.

Hrad Čeklís

Hrad Čeklís

Bernolákovo

The sad reality of today is that the once-glorious castles on our territory have turned into ruins. These are sought after primarily by avid hikers who crave stunning views and relaxation in nature. The ruin of castle Čeklís, located on the edge of the village of Bernolákovo, is one of them. Here, you can enjoy a view of the Podunajskú nížinu plain, Bratislavu, and Bratislavský castle.

The village of Bernolákovo is one of the relatively large villages located in the Senec district. During your visit, you will certainly notice its landmark: the Roman Catholic kostol sv. Štefana Kráľa church from 1355 and the adjacent kaplnku sv. Anny chapel from 1835. On the elevated terraced hilltop known as Várdomb (Hradný vrch), the hrad Čeklís castle is situated. In written records, it is also mentioned as Ceki, Chekluez, Cheklys, or Chekles.

Getting to this castle is manageable for everyone. The hike to this publicly accessible ruin is easy and will take you less than 10 minutes on foot. Simply park your car by the church and follow the dirt path alongside it directly to your destination. From a distance, you will see the silhouette of a tower emerging from the castle, although it is not part of the original structure.

The castle was likely built in the 13th century as a guard castle. The first reference to it dates back to 1209 as the old settlement of Šebeš, the royal cellar administrator. Many owners are mentioned in the castle’s history, including Charles Robert, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and the Eszterházy family. Unfortunately, the castle fell into ruin during Rákóczi's War of Independence. In 1720, a Baroque manor house was built near the castle. Today, only a fragment of a 1.9 m thick curtain wall remains. A sharp-eyed observer may also notice a vaulted discharge arch with a span of 5 m. The castle was reportedly protected by a moat as well. The round waterworks tower, which fits into the stylized scenery, might also help draw tourists here. This was built in 1905 on the remnants of a Baroque brick cistern.

Two legends are associated with the castle. The first tells the story of the beautiful Helena of Čeklís, who intoxicated the Turkish Grand Vizier with her wine and fled to svätojurský hrad castle before the Turkish invasion. She also wanted to trick the enemy by shoeing her horses backwards. As a result, the soldiers remained confused and, in their helplessness and rage, burned the castle down. The second legend, about the candles of Čeklís, might be told to you by the locals.
