Kúpele Brusno

Kúpele Brusno

Brusno

Kúpele Brusno is among the popular Slovak spas. It lies northeast of the city of Banská Bystrica, in the Slovenské rudohorie mountain range. The Brusnianska valley, in which the spa is located, is also called the valley of Peklo (Hell). Not because of hellfire, but because of the tributary of the Peklo river, which flows into the Brusnianka stream. Fresh air, a peaceful environment, and beautiful surrounding nature are perfect for a spa stay in this location.

Brusnianske kúpele dates its history back to the beginning of the 19th century when the first spa house began to be built. However, the springs of healing mineral water were likely used much earlier by local lumberjacks and charcoal burners. Kúpele Brusno experienced its greatest boom under the ownership of Ľudovíi Rosenauer, who invested considerable money into drilling for a warm spring. Although he did not succeed in drilling a spring, Hungarian officials and merchants flocked here for recreation during his management.

With the collapse of Austria-Hungary, Brusnianske kúpele lost its Hungarian clientele, but it established itself well in the new Czecho-Slovak state. Due to the similar chemical composition of the mineral water, it was nicknamed the "Slovak Karlovy Vary." It was not until the construction of the Liečebný dom Poľana, funded by investors from Kúpele Sliač, that the operation of the spa began in 1985 as we know it today.

Brusnianka mineral water is used for spa treatment. Here we can find seven springs, four of which, Ondrej, Ludvig, Paula, and Ďumbier, are used for drinking cures, and the Ondrej spring is also used for preparing mineral-carbonated baths. All springs have a similar composition, bicarbonate and calcium-magnesium.

You have certainly heard of Brusnianka mineral water. It is bottled right here at Kúpele Brusno and comes from the Ondrej spring. It is also referred to as "kyselka" (acidulous mineral water). This mineral water has healing properties and helps with cardiovascular diseases, stomach problems, digestive tract disorders, as well as musculoskeletal disorders.

Kúpele Brusno also focuses on diseases caused by metabolic and endocrine disorders, as well as the widespread disease, diabetes. Likewise, a doctor may refer you here for the treatment of certain occupational diseases. Treatment procedures include balneotherapy, mineral and pool baths, massages, saunas, and wraps. You can also make use of gas injections or oxygen therapy treatment with oxygen. No less important in the treatment process is group, individual, or fitness exercise.

The spa park in Brusno is perfect for rest and relaxation for seniors. In addition, cultural events, musical performances, and dance evenings are regularly held in the spa house. Whether you are looking for a romantic stay or arriving with a group of friends, you will enjoy walking, cycling, or hiking. All this is offered by the beautiful region of Horehronie. From Kúpele Brusno, you can also admire the peaks of the Nízke Tatry. If you decide to spend your holiday here, we have a few tips for trips around Brusno.

Families with children will certainly enjoy trips on the Čiernohronská železnica, a visit to Bystrianska jaskyňa, or Hrad Slovenská Ľupča. Haličský zámok

Haličský zámok

Halič

In the Novohradský región region, whose center is the town of Lučenec, the magnificent Haličský zámok castle has stood for centuries. The jewel of Novohrad, as the castle is nicknamed, thrones on a lonely hill in the village of Halič, and the view of it looks like something straight out of a fairytale book. The origins of the original stone castle are assumed to date back to the 12th century. Over its long existence, however, it has also gone through difficult times. Two world wars, as well as the insensitive approach of the Communists, disrupted its original architecture, and so the once sumptuous seat of counts began to decay. New life was breathed into it only by the final reconstruction between 2005 and 2016, which transformed the abandoned castle into a grand castle hotel with a beautiful forest park and a pond.

The first written mention of Zámok Halič dates back to 1386, when the Hungarian Queen Mary granted permission to the nobleman Štefan Lossoncy to build a stone fortress. In the 16th century, the original owners were replaced by the Forgách family, who owned the Renaissance-Baroque property until 1948. Turbulent times full of uprisings and rebellions, however, took their toll on its exterior. The last reconstruction initiated by the Forgách family took place in 1897. The greatest damage to the seat occurred during World War I, when Hungarian soldiers looted it in 1919. The subsequent onset of the Communist regime in 1948 turned the historic monumental building into the headquarters of a JRD (Unified Agricultural Cooperative). The Social Care Institute for Mentally Disabled Youth Lučenec, which was housed here in the 1960s, also contributed to its detriment. From 1993, this historic building remained without an owner and thus began to wither away. Nature itself and antisocial groups of the population also contributed to its ruin.

Hope for the rebirth of the castle dawned in 2005, when the former aristocratic seat was bought by a Košice-based company. After demanding reconstruction works that lasted ten years, the ruin became a luxurious hotel with a restaurant, which also offers guided tours of designated areas. If you are wondering what you can see at the castle, the answer is simple. Right upon arrival, you will be captivated by the Arkádia castle hall, located under a glass dome. After the tour, you can relax here in a stylish castle café. The second largest and at the same time most representative space is the County Hall (Župná sieň), which boasts magnificent frescoes from 1762. The room also features unique Rococo tile stoves decorated with gold ornaments. On the walls hang paintings of the original owners, primarily from the Forgách family. Another interesting room is the Representative Apartment with original wooden beams and historic furniture.

Your tour will continue to the 1st floor, where you will be delighted by a corridor with a cycle of unique wall paintings depicting Hungarian monarchs from the 16th to 17th centuries. Part of Haličský zámok is also a beautiful Baroque fountain, a castle park with a rose garden, and a moat. The castle hotel is an ideal place for all lovers of history and nobility, as well as for a romantic wedding. You can say your "I do" in the local chapel, which was consecrated in 2017. If you have decided to visit the castle during the summer season, you can enjoy a romantic boat ride on the adjacent pond or a picnic on its shores.

If you still feel like exploring, head to the nearby village of Divín, where you will find the ruins of the Gothic Hrad Divín castle and the Zichyho kaštieľ manor house, which was once home to local landowners. End a demanding day full of history in a comfortable room of the Haličský apartmán. The complete range of accommodation near Zámok Halič will be displayed on the page accommmodation in Haliči. The next day can be spent on the shores of the Vodná nádrž Ľadovo reservoir or in the pools of the municipal lido Kúpalisko v Lučenci. We wish you a wonderful stay full of extraordinary experiences.

Chmarošský viadukt

Chmarošský viadukt

Telgárt

The Chmarošský viadukt viaduct near Telgárt is one of the most elegant and most photographed technical monuments in Slovakia, recalling scenes from historical movies with its monumental brick architecture.

The site is located on the edge of the village of Telgárt, in the Brezno district, in the Banskobystrický kraj region, at the border of three national parks. The viaduct is part of railway line number 173, known as the Central Slovakian Transversal Railway, and was built in the 1930s. The structure, with a length of 113.6 meters and a height of 18 meters, consists of nine stone and brick arches that create an impressive curve in the open landscape. The viaduct still serves railway transport today, and a train passing over this historical structure is one of the greatest experiences for passengers and photographers waiting under the bridge. The architecture of the viaduct was designed with an emphasis on aesthetics, making it a unique example of engineering construction from the period of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Thanks to its location near the Besník pass, the surroundings of the viaduct offer fresh mountain air and the typical atmosphere of the Horehronie region, where the meadows change into different shades in every season. The viaduct has become an important point for tourism in the region, with its popularity constantly growing thanks to social networks that have turned it into one of the most visited technical monuments in Central Europe.

What can you find here?

In the area under the viaduct, you will find well-kept grassy areas suitable for photography and picnics, information boards about the history of the track, and marked trails leading to the best viewpoints. A nearby parking lot along the main road is available, as well as a stylish café located in a historical train carriage offering refreshments with a direct view of the bridge arches.

Who is the place suitable for?

The location is ideal for photographers, technical monument enthusiasts, and families with children looking for an easy walk with an attractive destination. It is also sought after by railway fans and tourists passing through Horehronie towards Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa cave. Standard walking shoes are sufficient to access the base of the bridge, but maximum caution and adherence to the prohibition of entering the tracks themselves are required when moving near the railway.

What can you visit in the surroundings?

Right in Telgárt, there is another technical rarity, the Telgártska slučka loop, and the nearby Telgártsky viadukt viaduct. You can visit the source of the Hron river in the Besník pass or ascend the legendary peak Kráľova hoľa, which is the cradle of Slovak natural poetry. For history and geology lovers, Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa cave or the picturesque village of Šumiac with its unique bell museum are within easy reach.

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici is an impressive Baroque sacred complex ranking among the most beautiful in all of Europe. It is situated on Scharffenberg hill, translated as Ostrý vrch, at an altitude of 726 m above sea level. It was created at a time when Banská Štiavnica belonged to the largest and most important free royal towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. It was precisely these favorable economic conditions that drove the development of the town culturally as well. Thanks to this, Kalvária Banská Štiavnica was built on the initiative of the Jesuit František Perger.

The foundation stone of the Horný kostol, one of the 22 structures of the calvary, was laid and solemnly blessed on September 14, 1744. The church, also referred to as the "German" church, was completed in 1745, when it was also consecrated. The rest of the complex was gradually built and subsequently consecrated as well. It took seven years, exactly until September 14, 1751. The construction was made possible thanks to financial donations from townspeople. The most prominent among them have their coats of arms placed on the facades of the chapels. On Trinity Sunday in 1751, the calvary was even visited by Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine himself.

Despite the construction of the calvary during the peak of the Baroque period, the structures maintained appropriate restraint. Their appearance was not distracting and primarily encouraged the inner reflection and contemplation of pilgrims. The entire complex consists of 17 stations (chapels), 3 churches (Dolný kostol, Sväté schody, Horný kostol), the Ecce Homo station (dungeon), and the Holy Sepulchre (Svätý hrob). The chapels are characterized by an unusual arrangement, as the story of Jesus begins in Nazareth. This is precisely what makes the Banská Štiavnica calvary exceptional.

The first three chapels are preparatory, leading to Dolný kostol. From there, the path continues to the seventh chapel and subsequently to Sväté schody, from where the path forks. The chapels on the left side depict the condemnation and torture of Jesus, ending with the scene of his crucifixion in Horný kostol. You walk around Svätý hrob and return along the other side, where the chapels depict the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The statuary of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is the culmination of the entire pilgrimage, located down below again, near Dolný kostol.

As is often the case with buildings, they require reconstruction over time, and the Banská Štiavnica calvary was no exception. The chapels were reconstructed for the first time in 1894. When the coup came in 1948, the ownership of the calvary passed to the state, which resulted in its gradual deterioration. Between 1978 and 1981, the state funded repairs that were mostly carried out by volunteers from the ranks of local believers. The Velvet Revolution probably had the greatest impact on the calvary; its decorations were stolen and subsequently sold off, and the buildings were devastated. What could be saved was relocated to Slovenské banské múzeum located at Starý zámok. Currently, visitors can view these items during the "Kalvária v azyle" exhibition. In 1993, Banská Štiavnica along with the calvary was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The year 2007 was marked by the calvary's inclusion in the list of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world. It was threatened with complete destruction, but since 2008, an extensive reconstruction has been underway to save this unique place. The buildings are being gradually restored; the reconstruction of Dolný kostol was completed first in 2013, followed by some chapels, the amphitheater, sculptural production, and in 2018, Horný kostol as well.

The calvary is among the popular spots in Banská Štiavnica. However, it is not visited only by believers, although pilgrimages, Holy Masses, or various other cultural events are often held here. Tourists are also interested in the history of the site, its flawless architectural design, the painting and artistic craft underlining the details, as well as the overall setting of the location into the natural environment, with which it creates perfect harmony. If you wish to visit this monument, on our website you will find truly beautiful accommodation near Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici. Pamätník Nemecká

Pamätník Nemecká

Nemecká

In modern Slovak history, there are very few chapters as dark as the one written in the year 1945. One of the saddest events at the end of World War II took place in the village of Nemecká in central Slovakia. It is right here that a memorial stands today, dedicated to the victims who died at the hands of the German commando and the Hlinka Guard. The cultural monument is located near the main road from Banská Bystrica to Brezno. In addition to the Pamätník Nemecká itself, an exhibition entitled Represálie nacistov a príslušníkov POHG na Slovensku v rokoch 1944-1945 is prepared for visitors. Here, you can see not only the uniforms of members of the Hlinka Guard, but also the personal belongings of the victims who laid down their lives here.

In the village of Nemecká, on the premises of a former lime kiln, tragic events took place in January 1945 that have no equal in the modern history of Slovakia. The lime kiln situated on the border between the territories of the villages of Ráztoka and Nemecká became a silent witness to the murder of direct participants in the SNP, their family members, supporters of the uprising, and persons persecuted for racial reasons. The victims were shot here and subsequently burned in the flames of the stone furnace. More than 900 people lost their lives here during a single week in January.

Today, the Pamätník Nemecká, also referred to as the Pamätník umučeným, stands at this blood-stained site. The cultural monument belongs to the Múzeum SNP. The first part of the exhibition provides a general introduction, the course of the tragic event, and introduces visitors to its main actors and, last but not least, the victims of the murder.

The second part of the exhibition is located in a separate room. Its goal is a detailed presentation of the reprisals in western, central, and eastern Slovakia. One of its sections is dedicated to attempts to exterminate the Roma population. Among the most interesting items representing these tragic events are parts of uniforms of the POHG, the German police, and the Arrow Cross Party. An especially emotional part of the presentation is the personal items of the victims of extermination and belongings from burned houses in the villages of Kalište and Kľak.

The lime kiln in Nemecká proved to be a strategic site in 1945. The victims were burned here, and their ashes, along with remaining body fragments, were swallowed by the waters of the Hron river. The furnace stands here to this day as a silent witness of the tragedy and a figurative warning finger. Next to the lime kiln, a monument symbolizing the flame of the furnace and a kneeling woman was built for the victims of the reprisals.

If you visit the village of Nemecká during your wanderings through Horehronie, you certainly will not miss the Pamätník umučeným. The gloomier thoughts that might run through your mind after touring this place can be dispelled by the picturesque nature of central Slovakia. Accept an invitation to the nearby village of Predajná and take a walk to the magnificent Predajnianske vodopády, or let your mind unwind in the mysterious underground of Bystrianska jaskyňa. And when the cultural heritage and natural wealth of this region completely charm you, find accommodation near the Pamätník Nemecká. Cottages and cabins in Horehronie practically invite you to relax surrounded by picturesque nature.

Or will you succumb to beach volleyball on one of the two beach courts instead? Naturally, there is an option to set up to five courts with high-quality sand. You can also set your own rules when playing speed badminton, a combination of badminton, tennis, and squash. Equipment such as tennis rackets or balls for these games can be rented for all offered sports and relaxation activities.

The body also needs a certain dose of rest. However, you do not have to leave the complex, as there is a Finnish sauna directly inside where you can warm up your muscle-fatigued body after sports. Afterwards, you can head to the relaxation zone. Hot summer days are wonderful for unwinding in Aqua beach Orlík, which is a section of the complex featuring a water world. 3 heated swimming pools are available for you there. A ride on the 95-meter water slide will also boost your adrenaline.

The sports complex is favored not only by seniors, who can get moving here at their own pace. This place is also popular with families with children, as an entertaining program is prepared specifically for the little ones at the children's playground. It is equipped with climbing frames, swings, and a trampoline. A bonus throughout your entire relaxation time is seating on the structured summer terrace. While sipping coffee or a mixed drink, you can enjoy unique views of the entire Zvolenská priehrada dam along with the sports complex.

Galéria Jána Kulicha

Galéria Jána Kulicha

Zvolenská Slatina

He was profoundly convinced that everything he created belonged to Slovakia, and through his work, he tirelessly proved how beautiful and rich it is. Ján Kulich is one of the most prominent representatives of 20th-century Slovak art. It is precisely to his life's work that Galéria Jána Kulicha, situated in the heart of the village of Zvolenská Slatina in the Zvolen district, is dedicated. The gallery building with a large adjacent garden is located between the school and the Evangelical church. Here, you can admire the artist's work in all its diversity. Wooden statuettes from his childhood, drawings, and sketches, as well as monumental sculptures, have been preserved. You will not easily forget this artistic experience.

The modern gallery has its home in a simple linear building. The structure is oriented toward the north, where an old vicarage stood in the past. It was right here that historical figures once gathered, and it was also the birthplace of Terézia Vansová. Part of the gallery grounds is a restored fragment of one wall of the original vicarage with artistic embellishment. Before entering the gallery building, an engaging frontal sculpture will welcome you. It will look familiar if you have ever visited the village of Terchová in the past. It is a scaled-down version of the monumental statue of Juraj Jánošík that guards the entrance to Vrátna dolina. Its author is none other than the artist Ján Kulich.

The main mission of the gallery is to preserve and present the work of Ján Kulich to the public. Right here, you have the opportunity to get acquainted with the broad range and content scope of the great national artist's creation. The gallery's collection consists of almost 3,700 original works. You can admire wooden statuettes from the author's childhood creation, drawings, sketches, and paintings, as well as medals, reliefs, sculptures, and portraits. All presented works are assembled into several thematic circles of the artist's lifelong key themes. The exhibition is updated annually.

An interesting part of the gallery's activity is the implementation of educational programs targeted not only at children and youth. Cultural projects, creative workshops, and cultural-social events in the garden are organized here. Children love participating in fun trivia competitions and activities, playing detectives, searching for treasure, or taking part in drawing mini-workshops. The gallery also offers its unique premises for rent. If its grounds charm you, you can organize, for example, a family celebration, wedding, or wedding photoshoot here.

After a beautiful artistic experience in Zvolenská Slatina, we also recommend a trip to the nearby Vígľašský zámok castle, recreation in Športový areál Orlík in Zvolen, and a tour of the majestic Zvolenský hrad. A trip to Pustý hrad and a tour of the picturesque wooden articular church in Hronsek are also unique experiences. There are many more tourist attractions and sights in this region. Come and see for yourself. Book accommodation near Galéria Jána Kulicha and combine relaxation with discovering cultural and historical wealth. You can choose from the accommodation offer in Zvolenská Slatina and adjacent areas, or you can opt for accommodation in Zvolen. Historický vlak vo Vígľaši

Historický vlak vo Vígľaši

Vígľaš

If you are also among train enthusiasts, we recommend going on a trip to see the historical train in Vígľaš. An original monument of the forest railway is located in the small village of Vígľaš, between the towns of Detva and Zvolen. A very well-preserved part of the train set and several meters of the track itself are accessible to visitors year-round. It is situated right by the main road, so you certainly will not miss it. No entrance fee is charged, so you can come anytime and admire this unusual attraction.

The forest railway served to transport harvested timber and originally ran from Poľana to Vígľaš. Construction began in 1904, and a year later the first section to the Očová sawmill was completed. The entire track was finished in 1907 and was 26 kilometers long. Originally, the railway operated with horse-drawn carriages; later, it was equipped with a steam locomotive. Eventually, technical progress also enabled the use of a motor locomotive.

During World War II, the train fulfilled another honorable function. It supplied partisans who were hiding in the surrounding mountains. Today, only a short section of the entire railway has been preserved; however, you can still admire the U175 48 steam engine, a passenger carriage, a flatcar, and four timber-logging cars. The historical train in Vígľaš has thus become a valuable monument to the forest railway as well as a rewarding subject for great artistic photographs.

We recommend combining the trip with other attractions in the area. Find accommodation near the historical train in Vígľaš and also visit the ruins of Vígľašský zámok castle, which towers above the banks of the Slatina river. Just a few minutes' drive away lies the interesting Kameňolom pod Ježovou quarry. You can easily combine your trip with a visit to the town of Zvolen, where we recommend visiting Zvolenský hrad castle or Arborétum Borová Hora. If you should long for technical monuments, another unique attraction awaits you along the way, the pancierový vlak Hurban armored train. The location truly offers many interesting sights worth seeing. Pack your backpacks, take your cameras, and head out on a trip, even by train if you like.

Šášovský hrad

Šášovský hrad

Žiar nad Hronom

Hrad Šášov castle stands atop a massive rock formation on the left bank of the river, in the outer area of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, directly above the valley of the Hron river. You will find it in the district of Žiar nad Hronom – Šášovské Podhradie. Many legends revolve around its origins. One of them tells of the unprecedented heroism of the court jester Ladislav. The lord of Zvolenský hrad castle got lost deep in the forest during a hunting trip. Suddenly, a enraged she-bear appeared before him and bit him in the back. Seeing this, the jester did not hesitate, used his agility, and struck the bear in the head with an axe. Touched by his bravery, the nobleman promised out of gratitude to build him a castle on that very spot. Soon, a fortress bearing the name of his savior's profession stood on Orlia skala rock.

The castle is first mentioned in a document from 1253. It was most likely built by the brothers Vincent and Peter Vanch. Around 1306, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky seized it, and after his death, it passed through the hands of many different owners. Among the most famous were King Matej Korvín, the Archbishop of Eger Urban Dóczy, and the Hungarian prefect Gašpar Lippay.

A major turning point came in 1677, when it was captured and plundered during the Thököly Uprising. The subsequent destruction was completed in 1708 by imperial troops. From that time on, it lost its defensive function, remained abandoned, and began to fall into ruin. Gunfire during World War II in 1945 also caused difficult times when part of a retreating German army unit set up position in the castle tower.

Šášovský hrad castle was built on the Pohronská hradná cesta (Pohronie Castle Route) and was meant to serve as a defensive and watch fortress. Originally, it consisted of a Gothic palace, residential and farm buildings, a chapel, a water cistern, defensive towers, and, by all accounts, had two outer baileys. Two fortified courtyards protected the Gothic-Renaissance upper castle, and a round bastion guarded the entrance to the palace.

To this day, perimeter walls several meters high have been preserved. The best-preserved parts are the remains of the upper castle, the Gothic palace, and the triangular tower. In 2015, the remains of a bread oven of unusual dimensions were found here, indicating the presence of a castle bakery. Since 2003, conservation and restoration work has been underway to preserve the remains for future generations.

A green-marked hiking trail leads directly from the village to the ruins. The ascent takes about 20 minutes, and the gently sloping terrain can easily be handled by children. From the castle rock, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the Hron river and the entire valley of Šášovské Podhradie.

If you have planned your hike to the ruins on a hot summer day, head straight from your walk to the refreshing pools of Plážové kúpalisko Žiar nad Hronom. Another interesting place worth visiting is Krajská hvezdáreň a planetárium Maximiliána Hella, where you have a unique opportunity to see our galaxy up close.

An adrenaline adventure in the form of riding Monster scooters awaits you in the nearby village of Lehôtka pod Brehmi. If you wish to continue exploring this beautiful region, book accommodation in the vicinity of Šášovský hrad castle. Accommodation in Žiar nad Hronom includes charming cottages and cabins as well as comfortably furnished guesthouses. It is entirely up to you what appeals to your heart most. We wish you a pleasant and peaceful stay.

Predajnianske vodopády

Predajnianske vodopády

Predajná

The Predajnianske vodopády are located in the cadastral area of the village of Predajná in the Brezniansky okres. The cascading waterfalls of the Čelno stream boast not one but two streams, with a 5 m drop forming on one of them, while the other is only half that height. Since 1991, they have been a nature monument, and the 11.7 ha area falls under the administration of the Poľana state nature conservation. Protection applies not only to the waterfalls but also to rock seas and well-preserved plant and animal communities, which are important from an educational, scientific, and ecological perspective.

Above the waterfalls, tourists will also find one technical monument. The Kelemenov tunel on the forest road is a Slovak rarity. It was established back in 1928 when the narrow forest road in the Predajnianske Čelno valley was being adapted for timber transport by horse-drawn carriages. At one point, it was impossible to cut the road into the steep slope, and thus a 280 cm wide tunnel was pierced. It was named after its author, Ing. Vojtech Kelemen, the then director of Štátne lesy Banská Bystrica. In 1971, the tunnel underwent reconstruction and was enlarged to a height of 435 cm, a width of 440 cm, and a length of 41.5 m, thereby adapting it for car traffic.

Children can also easily manage the undemanding trip to the Predajnianske vodopády. The walk is also worth undertaking in winter when unique icefalls form. Marked trails lead to the waterfalls both from Predajná (approximately 11 km) and from the village of Lopej (approximately 9 km). Cyclists can also look forward to reaching the waterfalls along a marked cycling route named "Popod Hrb až na Štopm".

Accommodation near Prednianskych vodopádov is oriented rather toward cottages and chalets; you can look for them, for example, in Osrblie or Horná Lehota. If you are looking for apartments, enter the village of Valaská into our filters. If you stay in chalets in Bystrá, you will be close to the Bystrianska jaskyňa as well.

Hrad Dobrá Niva

Hrad Dobrá Niva

Podzámčok

There is no doubt that Slovakia is a country of castles. Historians estimate that over 180 of them were built during the Middle Ages. However, only 17 of them have been preserved to this day. Among the castles that were not so lucky is Hrad Dobrá Niva. You can find the ruins of the Gothic fortified residence on a hill above the village of Podzámčok, just 4 km from the village of Dobrá Niva.

In the past, Dobronivský hrad played a very important role. It protected the old trade route leading south of Zvolen through Liptov and Orava all the way to Poland. This important postal and trade route was once called Via Magna. The first written mention of the fortress comes from 1305, where it is referenced as Castrum de Dobronya. In 1306, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky became its owner, taking it from Demeter Zólyomi. After his death, it passed through many owners. The Eszterházy family owned it the longest, from 1614 until 1804.

Not only good people always lived at the castle. One of the cruel rulers was Štefan Verböci, who entered history with the infamous Tripartitum code of laws. It cast many inhabitants of former Hungary into serfdom.

It is not known when the castle fell into ruin. In 1805, it was purchased by the Royal Court Chamber for the needs of the Mining Chamber, and from then on, the fortress began to decay. Local villagers also contributed to its present state by using it as building material for their dwellings.

The fortified residence once consisted of a two-story Gothic palace with a cellar, a tower, and stone ramparts. A ring of a moat and rampart fortifications wound around the hill. The entrance was protected by two gates, a bastion, and strong fortifications.

To this day, the restored corner of the palace with window openings and two stone consoles that originally supported a bay window have been preserved. In 1996, the ruin underwent reconstruction and conservation works.

A path starting near the church in Podzámčok will lead you to Dobronivský hrad. The entire ascent will take you approximately 20 minutes at a slow walk, and even your little ones can handle it. On the castle hill, a well-maintained area awaits you with restored stairs, benches, and a fireplace where you can roast delicious sausages.

If you still feel like having another adventure, head to Zvolen, where the modern complex Športový areál Orlík awaits you. In Zvolen, you will also find a replica of the Pancierový vlak Hurban armored train, which participated in fighting during the Slovak National Uprising. A very nice excursion will be a trip to Zvolenský hrad castle and to the ruins of Pustý hrad.

One day will certainly not be enough for you to discover the beauties of the region, so book accommodation near Hrad Dobrá Niva and plan trips around the surrounding area. You can choose whether you succumb to the charm of wooden cottages and chalets or prefer a guesthouse with a restaurant. You can find the entire offer on our subpage accommodation Podzámčok.

Poľana nad Detvou

Poľana nad Detvou

Hriňová

Despite the fact that Poľana is not among the highest peaks of our country, it is certainly one of the best-known. It owes this not only to folk songs that even small children know, but also to the fact that it is the most famous extinct volcano in Slovakia. And perhaps it is right in its immediate surroundings that you will experience the best skiing.

The ski resort Poľana nad Detvou will surely surprise you with the quality of skiing that you will be able to experience here. The resort itself lies on the southern slopes of the well-known Poľana, in a protected landscape area. This fact alone hints that something exceptional awaits you here. Beautiful nature and piles of snow in winter. What more could one wish for?

You can get to this ski resort from Hriňová, which is famous for its healing stays or water reservoir. From there, you will continue along a mountain road for about another 12 km. If you choose this option and do not go via Hriňová, you will discover typical Detva scatter-site settlements.

You will certainly be surprised by the breathtaking view into the valley. You probably do not expect the ski resort to be spread out at a high altitude. However, the opposite is true. The ski slopes start at an altitude of 1184 and end at 1320 meters above sea level. In the ski resort, you will find a trio of ski lifts that ensure comfortable and fast transport for all skiers. Poľana nad Detvou boasts a pair of ski slopes that will mainly appeal to less demanding skiers. The first ski slope is marked in blue and is intended for absolute beginners or children. More experienced skiers will certainly appreciate the red, moderately difficult ski slope. Once again, we must remind you of the breathtaking view that awaits you while traversing the snow-covered plains.

The total length of the ski slopes in the resort is 1.7 km. A ski kindergarten and a separate children's lift are intended for the youngest toddlers. Here they will learn the art of skiing either accompanied by their parents or through qualified ski instructors.

In addition to everything mentioned, the rich offer of additional services and the quality background of the ski resort will also please you. A free parking lot, a buffet, a quality restaurant, a ski equipment rental and storage, and a ski service await you here. The Poľana nad Detvou ski resort also thinks of cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Here they will find up to 7 km of maintained trails in the beautiful environment of the surrounding forests.

Considering that the resort is located deep in the mountains, you will have to count on the fact that accommodation will be somewhat further away. An exception is the mountain hotel directly on the slope. However, in the surrounding villages, there is a sufficient number of various cottages, private rooms, and apartments that will satisfy even the most demanding. You no longer need to think about it, just pack your bags and hit the road.

Kúpele Sklené Teplice

Kúpele Sklené Teplice

Sklené Teplice

Kúpele Sklené Teplice is a therapeutic thermal spa that ranks among the oldest in Slovakia. It is spread out at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level at the foot of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, set in the picturesque nature of Sklené Teplice. Thanks to their composition with a high content of magnesium and calcium, the springs in the spa have a beneficial effect in helping patients treat diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Kúpele Sklené Teplice can pride itself on being probably the last spa where the water is not chemically treated. It is only cooled down to make it acceptable for human skin.

The history of Kúpele Sklené Teplice began to be written around the year 1550, when the first mention of it was preserved. A great peculiarity of that time was the discovery of springs that gushed from a travertine cover. There were several of them, but two were nevertheless a bit more significant, and that was thanks to the temperature of their water. One was pleasantly warm, the second even hot, with a temperature of 52.3 °C. Another natural peculiarity found was a cave steam bath, Parenica. It is a European unique phenomenon where the water gushes directly under the cave. Its temperature is 42 °C. Until the end of the 17th century, their owners were various feudal lords, after which the spa became state property. Thanks to the management of the Mining Office in Banská Štiavnica, the construction of spa houses took place. Subsequently, the gushing mineral springs also began to be used for therapeutic purposes. There were 14 springs, each with its own name, 7 of which are currently used.

Kúpele Sklené Teplice offers more than 60 treatments with various focuses. Prescription treatments include Bioptron, diathermy, diadynamic and interference currents, hydrogalvan, magnetotherapy, oxygen therapy, Phyaction, Solux, gas injections, and Scottish douches. In addition to these, there is still a choice of various other treatments for which a doctor's prescription is not required. Water treatments include a classic or scented bubble bath, a whirlpool bath for upper and lower limbs, a whirlpool cascade, a foot bath, and a whirlpool. You can enjoy a stay in 5 thermal pools. These are the cave steam bath, the mining thermal bath, the Relax Thermal pool, the pool in the Kúpeľný dôm Goethe spa house, and the Mary Theresa bath.

You can look forward to classic, scented oil, reflexology, Ayurvedic, Indian, underwater, and hot stone massages, cupping, as well as various types of Thai massages. Beauty treatments are popular, including anti-cellulite and smoothing peelings, a cocoa face wrap, body forming, Rolletic, Prestige Body Wrap slimming, a solarium, and gold therapy. Disc Golf Krpáčovo

Disc Golf Krpáčovo

Krpáčovo

North of Podbrezová, at the foot of the southern side of the Nízke Tatry mountains, lies the recreation resort Krpáčovo. In the beautiful environment of Tatra nature, we invite you to play an interesting sport called Disc Golf. We will gladly explain its basic rules to you.

Disc Golf originated in the 1970s in California. It was invented by the American Ed Headrick. Disc Golf is a sort of combination of frisbee and golf. Compared to golf, it has the advantage that, apart from discs, you do not need any other equipment. The goal of the game is to get the disc into baskets placed around the playing course using the fewest possible throws. The Disc Golf course in Krpáčovo is world-class. It was designed very sensitively to blend into the wonderful nature that you can enjoy to the fullest throughout the entire game. Upon arrival at the course, after paying the entrance fee, you will receive three discs and a scorecard to record the results of your game. The blue disc is metal and is used for throwing long distances. The yellow-green disc is plastic and is intended for medium distances. The pink one is also plastic and is used for short distances and completing the hole.

A total of 12 DG baskets are installed on the course. These are baskets that resemble basketball hoops, but unlike them, they have attached steel chains used to catch the playing discs. They are placed at a distance of 60 to 150 meters. You will find their location marked on the map on the scorecard as well as on the information board at the entrance to the course. The diverse terrain found in the flight path of the discs contains challenging, yet all the more interesting and fun obstacles that players must overcome. Throwing is not always direct. Sometimes it is necessary to throw the disc over, under, or around obstacles, such as forest vegetation or the water surface of a lake.

The total length of the playing course is 1,033 meters. You can play the game alone and relax surrounded by nature, or enjoy it with family or friends. It brings joy and relaxation that you can indulge in during any season without high costs. You can play just for fun; however, it might captivate you so much that you will even participate in some DG competition, which are held all over the world.

In the winter season, you can combine a game of Disc Golf with skiing in the ski resort Krpáčovo or the nearby ski resort Tále. In the summer, you can cool off with a visit to the Krpáčovo water reservoir or try a game of traditional golf on the magnificent golf course Gray Bear Tále. Your little ones will certainly welcome playing around on the rope course Tarzania Tále or the story of the Slovak vampire, which will be told to you in Prdimuchova upírska izba in nearby Horná Lehota.

After a pleasantly spent day, you might gladly lay your head to rest in accommodation near the Disc Golf course in Krpáčovo. You can enjoy romantic moments, and not only as a couple, in cottages in Krpáčovo. Or would you rather prefer accommodation in apartments in Krpáčovo? We leave this decision up to you. We will be happy to help you if needed.

Halčianske jazero

Halčianske jazero

Banská Belá

The area of Štiavnické vrchy is also known because gold was mined here a long time ago. Energy was needed for its mining, which led to the construction of "tajchy" (artificial water reservoirs). One of the popular and well-known reservoirs in this area is Halčiansky tajch, also known as Halčianske jazero. Come and enjoy your summer holiday right in the village of Banská Belá.

The sun-drenched forest environment and high temperatures will be appreciated by every single holidaymaker in Banská Belá. Right in this village lies an undiscovered treasure of the region, which was created in the second half of the 18th century by damming a stream. This stream flowed in from the settlement of Halča, which belonged to Banská Belá. The original purpose of the reservoir was to power stamp mills and metallurgical facilities in the local village as well as in the Kozelnícka dolina. In 1909, the reservoir was handed over to the Vysoká banícka a lesnícka škola v Banskej Štiavnici. Later, the reservoir served for fish breeding and fishing.

Halčiansky tajch is an artificially created water reservoir. Many locals use it for recreational purposes because it is not as heavily sought after. You enjoy relative peace, solitude, and perfect relaxation here thanks to its more secluded location compared to other lakes. The depth of the reservoir is 13 meters, which is also great for fish farming. Spanning an area of more than 4 hectares, you will easily find your own little spot for sunbathing.

As we have already mentioned, the lake also serves fishing purposes. In addition to breeding, fishing is also permitted here. Within the overall environment, it forms an important landscape feature. Take in the surrounding views and notice the viaduct from the dam, over which a train occasionally passes. To fully enjoy your stay with joy, we recommend booking accommodation near Halčianske jazero. Plan your holiday during the second Saturday of July and rest assured that a fantastic experience awaits you. Every year, a wooden crocodile is retrieved from the lake during a special event.

The village of Banská Belá is an attractive destination from a tourism perspective. Nearby is the district town of Banská Štiavnica, which offers numerous historical monuments and other interesting attractions. It is nice to have a coffee or ice cream at Námestie Svätej Trojice and enjoy the architecture of this ancient mining town. On the way, you can stop and explore the exhibitions at Kaštieľ Svätý Anton. On the way back, try horseback riding at Ranč Nádej. The best solution for you will be to book a chalet near Banská Belá, from where swimming and discovering the surrounding beauty will be right at your fingertips. Will you accept the offer for this type of holiday in Slovakia?

Bystrianska jaskyňa

Bystrianska jaskyňa

Bystrá (okres Brezno)

On Slovakia we have many well-known and extremely visited caves. Have you already been in Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa, Harmaneckej jaskyni či Domici and are you looking for some less known one? We have a good tip for you. It is Bystrianska jaskyňa.

It is located in the Nízke Tatry, just like its sisters, the well-known Demänovské jaskyne – Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa and Demänovská jaskyňa slobody. You will find it a piece from Brezno, right before Mýto pod Ďumbierom. It lies in the namesake village of Bystrá. Why visit it?

The character of the cave is somewhat different than the others. In them you will find large spacious domes and halls, but Bystrianska jaskyňa differs from them. In it you will find primarily narrow and high corridors, in which you will feel like a true caver. The cave is mainly from limestone and dolomite, which easily forms and similar karst forms arise in it. In the cave there is also the Peklo abyss, deep up to 56 meters. Despite the narrow corridors, you will also find beautiful halls with dripstone decoration here, for example Sieň Baldachýnov or Zrútený dóm. Company will be made for you during your visit by up to 8 species of various bats.

The entry parts of this cave were known by locals already very long ago. Into their interiors they however didn't dare for a long time, for the first time it was in the year 1923. The cave consists of two parts, Stará and Nová jaskyňa. Into that Nová one was descended through the aforementioned Peklo abyss. To opening for the broad public the cave lived to see in the years 1939-1940.

Today opened route of the cave has a length of 545 meters. It is suitable also for immobile visitors, since you will find here only 20 stairs, which with the help of others is not a problem to overcome. A curiosity of the cave is that the entrance and exit are in two different places. Other caves are sometimes longer, however along one place you go twice. Here you pass through almost all parts of the cave only once and you see more of it. Prepare yourself however for a low temperature and therefore dress yourself better. The whole route is almost without elevation change and you will enjoy it in every age. Do not forget, that on Monday is the cave closed for the public and select yourself for the visit on another day.

The surroundings are full of opportunities for spending free time. You can go to the massive Ďumbier, visit the nearby jaskyňu Mŕtvych netopierov or play golf. As a starting point will serve you stylish mountain accommodation, for example in nearby Mýto pod Ďumbierom, or Bystrá. Popular are cabins in nearby forests or cozy guesthouses or apartments with complete equipment. The Nízke Tatry are interesting also on their southern side and a visit to Bystrianska jaskyňa is ideal to find that out on your own skin.

Malé Studenské jazero

Malé Studenské jazero

Banský Studenec

Malé Studenské jazero lake (also called Malé Kolpašské jazero) is one of two reservoirs (tajchy) in the village of Banský Studenec in the Banská Štiavnica district. The second lake is called Veľké Studenské jazero and lies right next to Malé Studenské jazero, sharing a common dam. Both artificial water reservoirs were built for the needs of the mining industry back in the 18th century. Malé Studenské jazero was constructed in 1763, but historical records only cite it as operational in 1774.

The lakes have long ceased to serve as a water reservoir for the mine; currently, the smaller lake is used for fish farming and the larger one for summer recreation. In 2015, the reconstruction of the dam between the lakes was completed, as it had been undercut several times in previous years. On this occasion, the Slovenský vodohospodársky podnik water management enterprise also built a modern beach by the larger of the reservoirs, which is especially popular with families with small children.

Thanks to the fact that each reservoir has its own role, this area is also suitable for groups whose members have different expectations for their holiday. And it won't stop at just fishing and swimming. The surroundings of the lakes are suitable for mountain biking, and a cross-country triathlon is held here regularly. Several marked hiking trails lead from the village. The settlement of Kysihýbel, known for its arboretum, also belongs to the village. There is no shortage of monuments in this area either; for example, you can visit the underground quarry Diery (or Barlangy), which is listed as a UNESCO technical monument.

Start your search for accommodation near Malé Studensko jazero directly in the village of Banský Studenec, where cottages are available for rent, among other options. Various types of stays are also available in Banská Belá, where you can choose an apartment or a cottage, for instance. Náučný chodník Kysihýbel

Banská Štiavnica

The Náučný chodník Kysihýbel educational trail guides you through the historical, forestry, and natural points of interest in the surroundings of Banská Štiavnica. The undemanding circular route starts approximately 1.5 km from the town, towards the adjacent village of Banský Studenec. The starting point is near the Kysihýbel arboretum, and the trail leads through the gorgeous environment of the Štiavnické vrchy. Do not forget a dose of courage and a flashlight, as we will also go underground.

The educational route has a length of 6 km with an elevation gain of 150 m. At a leisurely walking pace, you will complete it in 3.5 hours, while stopping at 14 interesting information boards. A picturesque part of the trail is the system of ponds, around which you will reach an underpass leading beneath the railway embankment. Among the most interesting parts is undoubtedly the Feistmanova záhrada. This is essentially an experimental forestry area with exotic tree species. In this small arboretum, you can admire 73 species of trees originating from various corners of the world.

You will continue towards the charming Červený kameňolomu, a rare site of red rhyolite extraction. It was opened during the construction of the Trať mládeže in the years 1947 – 1949. Today, it is being gradually reclaimed. An interesting fact is that it was precisely from this red rhyolite that the cladding of many valuable buildings and cultural monuments in Banská Štiavnica was made. In the next part of the educational trail, the Barlangy underground quarry, also nicknamed Diery, will be waiting for you. From the 14th to the end of the 19th century, andesite was mined here. Currently, you will find an underground space with a length of approximately 50 m here. For its tour, you will need a flashlight. The conclusion of the mysterious underground is formed by a small lake.

The educational route will further lead you between impressive andesite rock towers all the way back to the Kysihýbel forestry arboretum. The acclimatization facility spans an area of 7.78 ha and belongs among the oldest and most valuable arboretums of its kind. It was founded in 1900 by a professor of the Budapest University and focuses on the research and cultivation of exotic forest tree species. It is divided into four parts, within which the trees are planted in squares with an area of 15 x 15 m. The territory on which the arboretum extends is also known as the Jubilejný les kráľovnej Alžbety.

If you are lured by a walk through the charming points of interest of Banská Štiavnica, definitely do not miss a trip along this unique educational trail during your stay in this region. You can combine it with a walk around the gorgeous Klinger tajch or with a romantic visit to Banka lásky. Tále is famous for its golf course. During snow-free periods, it is among the biggest attractions. However, it is also popular in winter. When there is enough snow, you will find groomed cross-country skiing trails here with a total length of up to 6.5 km.

Snack bars, a restaurant, and a ski school are a matter of course. You can also have fun in ways other than on skis, for instance, with snowtubing, riding down the slope on inflatable tubes. You don't even need to bring skis with you; you can rent them right on-site.

It is located about one kilometer from the Drieňová housing estate, in the direction of Banský Studenec. The forest area covering nearly 8 hectares is covered with a stand of exotic tree species. The arboretum was founded in 1900 and 50 years later it was declared a protected area. Entry is possible only with a guide and your visit needs to be announced and arranged in advance.

The main mission of the forestry arboretum is the study of the acclimatization of exotic tree species. The area is divided into 350 smaller plots and 282 species of various trees have been planted here. The rare tree species come from the Northern Hemisphere, having been mostly imported from North America. The rarest species include the Amur cork tree, paper birch, false cypresses, Douglas fir, and giant sequoias.

Feistmantelova záhrada, as the arboretum is often called, is one of the stops on the Náučný chodník Kysihýbel educational trail, which begins in the village of Banský Studenec. The route consists of a 6-kilometer loop and can be easily managed by the whole family. Right at the beginning of the trail, in the Kysihýbel settlement, it is worth stopping at the Barlangy underground stone quarry. It looks like an overhang rock wall and the underground space has a length of 50 meters. Traces of manual stone extraction can be seen on the walls, and a small lake opens up to your view at the end of the quarry. Building stone has allegedly been mined in this location since as early as the 14th century.

Vajskovský vodopád

Vajskovský vodopád

Dolná Lehota

Vajskovský vodopád falls along the flow of the Vajskovský potok stream, which flows through one of the most beautiful valleys of the Nízke Tatry mountains. That is Vajskovská dolina. It offers many attractive options for hiking, cycling, boating on the lake, and beautiful walks through the quiet forest. One such walk will lead you to the 9 m high Vajskovský vodopád, which is located at an altitude of 1,200 m above sea level. The valley is attractive throughout the entire year, and its advantage is that it is not overly crowded with tourists, as it lies off the main tourist routes.

The waterfall is magnificent in every season; however, like any other, it is most striking during the period after heavy rains and when snow melts. What is characteristic of it? Veils of water falling from a height, their roar, and beautiful, in some periods even wild, vegetation. The pristine nature of the gorgeous Vajskovská dolina valley protects and hides it well. You will find it at its very end. While walking through the valley, make some natural noise, as bears occur in large numbers in these places. In fact, the first chamois were released here in the past, relocated from the Vysoké Tatry mountains.

You can reach the waterfall from the village of Dolná Lehota. From there, your steps will lead along a 13.5 km long hiking trail that ends right at Vajskovský vodopád. It involves walking along an asphalt road, which you will leave approximately 1.5 km from the waterfall. From there, you will continue through a small forest and a meadow. Whether you go on foot or pedal on a bicycle is entirely up to you. Given the terrain, the hike is classified as easy. And we certainly recommend completing it in winter as well, when the waterfall offers a beautiful icy view.

Please note that due to moving within the Národný park Nízke Tatry, it is forbidden to make fires, camp, or pick forest berries. Leave those for the animals and simply look all around at what our beautiful Mother Nature offers you. Breathe the fresh air, enjoy the silence and the sounds of the forest. The entire area is beautiful, so it would be a shame to visit for just one day. Find suitable accommodation near Vajskovský vodopád, for example on the page accommodation Dolná Lehota or accommodation Krpáčovo, and plan several trips. Take your family or friends with you and experience a real adventure.

Štôlňa Glanzenberg

Štôlňa Glanzenberg

Banská Štiavnica

Štôlňa Glanzenberg is located in the oldest mining town in Slovakia, Banská Štiavnica. Its name is derived from the German word "glänzen", which translates as to shine or sparkle. This hereditary (drainage) adit is one of the oldest mining adits in this region. Did you know that the term hereditary comes from the fact that it was constructed by several generations of miners?

The history of Banská Štiavnica is very closely tied to the extraction of precious ores and non-ferrous metals, which were mined here for over a thousand years. The oldest written mention of the adit dates back to 1560. You will find the adit, which originally measured up to 16 km, near the Monument to the Fallen Heroes of World War II, in the park on Kammerhofská ulica. Its main function was the mining of gold-silver ores on the Špitaler vein. In a later period, it served for transport, ventilation, and the descent of technicians.

The opened section, which ends at the Kaufhaus shaft, has a depth of 32 m and a length of 500 m. Štôlňa Glanzenberg was made famous by several visits from monarchs and emperors of the Viennese court. In 1751, it was visited by Crown Prince Francis Stephen of Lorraine (husband of Maria Theresa), who later became Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The last significant descent was made by Emperor Franz Joseph I on July 7, 1852. At the end of the accessible section, there are the "imperial stairs" connecting the Kaufhaus shaft with the Horna Svätotrojičná štôlňa adit excavated below. At this location, you will find commemorative plaques installed in their honor.

The tour of the adit can be taken by adults and children over 6 years of age. Before entry, museum staff will equip you with a protective coat, helmet, and flashlight, as the adit premises are not illuminated. The total tour time is approximately 90 minutes. The adit can be visited from spring to autumn, and you should always announce your visit in advance by phone. As a nice souvenir of your visit to this unique adit, you can mine a small piece of ore yourself.

After a 1.5-hour excursion in complete darkness, enjoy your time in daylight and visit the beautiful botanical garden, where you have the opportunity to discover over 200 species of domestic and exotic trees. In addition to a abundance of flora, you can also admire the historical buildings of the Mining and Forestry Academy. Take a romantic stay with your partner in Banská Štiavnica. In his work, he uses impressive figural compositions that record not only the dramatic atmosphere of the era, but also the specificity of the mining region. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery also collaborates with young artists and presents their work through solo and group exhibitions. During your visit to the gallery, you can also admire the tasteful architecture of the building, courtyards, and unusual corners. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday, between 09:00 and 17:00.

After a great cultural experience, set off for another in the form of a proper adventure and jump into searching for treasure! Starý zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Starý zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Slovakia's past is largely tied to its mining history. Many of our regions were well-known mining towns in the past. We can find them in the central part of Slovakia. Specifically at Banská Štiavnica, one of the most famous mining towns ever.

In the times of glory and wealth extracted from the ground, it was also necessary to protect it. Castles and châteaux were a natural way of protection. The Starý zámok was built for this purpose. This well-preserved castle complex is characterized by many unique features. It was established as an anti-Turkish fortress to protect against the devastating raids of the Turks. Despite the castle being called Starý (Old), it is not that old. It was created only in 1486, when many other castles already had a few centuries of existence behind them. Its origin is equally bizarre. It was not built as a new structure, but as a reconstruction of the existing Kostol Panny Márie church.

The basis of the castle is thus unusually the nave of the former basilica. It had stood here for a longer time, and defensive bastions with openings for defense were added to it. Likewise, an embankment was built and the fortification was reinforced. With a bit of perspective, we can say that it was the best-protected church in the entire Kingdom of Hungary (Uhorsko). However, under the influence of these reconstructions, the character of the building changed, and so the entire complex began to serve as a town castle.

Today's national cultural monument underwent its last reconstruction in 1777. It was in this year that an entrance tower was added to the castle, which is visibly better preserved than the original castle that gradually lost its role over time. Later, it housed a library, archives, and the municipal police. What is the situation with Starý zámok today?

The building itself is exceptionally interesting, if only due to the former existence of the basilica. Architecture lovers will find plenty to enjoy. In addition, there is a regional history and archaeology exhibition where you will learn many interesting facts about the history of mining in the region and much more. For example, about pipe-making.

It is not only Starý zámok that makes Banská Štiavnica worth a visit. Nový zámok, the historic square, or the opportunity to discover traditional crafts are the main draws of the town hidden in the mountains. Do not miss a tour of the mine, and if you want to relax, take a walk through the surrounding forests and unwind by the famous tajchs (tajchy).

Banská Štiavnica is a town in the mountains. It combines these two advantages when looking at accommodation options as well. Modern hotels? Guesthouses in old burgher houses? Cottages in the mountains in the middle of the forest? You will find everything in one place. In Banská Štiavnica. Take advantage of its unique location and all the attractions it offers to make a unique trip. Whoever comes here once will surely want to return.

Nový zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Nový zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Come with us to the land of mythical undergrounds, treasures, and gnomes. Venture below the Earth's surface, to crystal-clear lakes in the middle of green forests, come to paradise. Where can you find it? In Banská Štiavnica. There are only a few places that feature a beautiful castle. And even fewer where you can find two right in one place. Banská Štiavnica is just like that. In addition to Starý zámok, you will also find Nový zámok here, proudly towering over the town.

The Renaissance building originally served as a watchtower. And it is truly majestic, called a castle not just for nothing. Its task was to repel Turkish raids. Construction began in 1564 and was completed 7 years later. The massive tower above the town center had as many as 6 floors, with 4 defensive bastions on its corners. After a later reconstruction, the number of floors was reduced from 6 to the current 4.

High on the hill, Nový zámok played an important role. During periods of threat, it was part of a signaling system monitoring enemy movement from the village of Pukanec all the way to the village of Ľubietová. In addition, the castle was also useful to the general population. The tower's function was to announce the time. Every quarter of an hour by bugling and every hour by ringing a bell.

The role of the castle vanished after the Turkish invasions subsided. Nevertheless, gunpowder needed for mining drift excavations was stored here for a long time afterward. Nový zámok stood out with its strong defense, with up to 21 battle-ready cannons located around it.

What is the current function of the castle? It is one of the most sought-after tourist attractions in the area. The owner is Slovenské banské múzeum, which has its exhibition nearby right inside a mine. Inside the castle, you will find exhibits focused specifically on the defense of Banská Štiavnica against the Turks. Deep inside Nový zámok, you will learn everything you want to know about the situation back then. And a reward awaits you too: an unforgettable view from the top of the tower over magical Banská Štiavnica.

When you return from Nový zámok, you can also pop over to Starý zámok. Do not miss a walk through the historic town center with its steep, narrow lanes. The local plague column in the square is a true gem. Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. Numerous trails lead through the nearby mountains, showing you the beauty of the tajchy reservoirs. What used to be technical water reservoirs are now popular recreational destinations. You can find a diverse plant world in the botanical garden and clear your spirit with a walk up to Kalvária.

Find stylish accommodation in this medieval town. With us, it will be a breeze. We offer guest houses in historic burgher houses, as well as affordable private accommodations or cottages in the immediate vicinity. You are guaranteed to have Nový zámok right outside your window, as it is simply unmissable.

Lesnícky Skanzen Vydrovo

Lesnícky Skanzen Vydrovo

Čierny Balog

The forest open-air museum, which is managed by Lesy Slovenskej republiky, š. p. (Forests of the Slovak Republic, state enterprise), is located in Vydrovská dolina, approximately 1 km from Čierny Balog, right in the heart of Slovakia in the Veporské vrchy. Its creation is a response to many questions from the public regarding our greatest natural wealth. It represents forestry across our entire country. Covering an area of up to 140 ha, the museum area is part of the surrounding forests, which live their everyday life, including routine forestry work.

The origin of Skanzen Vydrovo dates back to 2002, when the foundation stone was solemnly laid. Since then, the open-air museum has come a long way, culminating in a perfect demonstration of life in symbiosis with nature. The Trail of Forest Time is more than 4 km long, along which you will find approximately 80 stops with interesting exhibits. At individual stations, you will discover the life-giving capacities of the forest. The space is subtly enhanced by natural artwork created by an international group of artists called Ekoart.

This living nature museum is connected to the village by the Nature Trail of the Village of Čierny Balog, which you can use for your return journey. However, a very popular mode of transport is also a ride on the Čierny Hron Railway, which transports visitors directly to the Vydrovo – Skanzen stop from either Hronec or Čierny Balog.

As part of the open-air museum, you will visit several exhibitions. The Old Forester's Room is a reconstruction of a workspace, presenting a forester's office from the first half of the 20th century. Forests and Lifeis a slightly "provocative" exhibition that highlights the issue of the relationship between humans and nature. It points very directly to the destructive impact of today's consumer lifestyle, which is very harsh on the forest and can lead to its collapse. Forest in the Mirror of Science shows visitors the importance of the forest to humans, in the past and present, focusing on the current condition of decaying spruce forests. It tries to find the potential causes of this decline while offering solutions for the health condition of our forests. The final exhibition bears the symbolic title A Tree is the Earth's Prayer to the Heavens… and consists of wooden sculptures from private collections located in the Forest Chapel.

Children will also find plenty to enjoy here, whether it is an educational trail with a viewing platform or an enclosure with live animals. Behind the wild boar enclosure is a sensory path, which is a very popular attraction. It consists of grass, sand, wood chips, stone, and water, with a clear recommendation: walk barefoot! The nerves in our limbs are interconnected, and the sensations we receive into our bodies precisely through walking barefoot over different types of surfaces provide a sense of balance. This further has a beneficial effect on all parts of our body.

The official website of the open-air museum offers a downloadable overview map of the grounds, where various tour routes are marked according to difficulty and duration. However, the development of the open-air museum is still not finished; it constantly wants to bring something new to its visitors. It aims to captivate not only with its beautiful exhibition, but also through the Tree Days event held annually. As part of the accompanying program, you will plant a tree together, compete, and the open-air museum will introduce crafts closely linked to forestry through demonstrations.

It is a good idea to think ahead about which route you will take through the open-air museum, as a detailed tour of the entire grounds takes almost a whole day. It is definitely worth it, as it is the forest and its atmosphere that will recharge you with the best possible energy, which is so necessary for each of us. We recommend booking accommodation on our accommodation Čierny Balog or accommodation Brezno pages and coming to relax in pure nature, full of authentic sounds, scents, and experiences. Let the forest tell you its own story.

Thanks to its location outside the built-up area of the town, the shooting range provides an undisturbed space for this specific type of sport, while the visit offers an interesting contrast to the peaceful historical atmosphere of the mining town.

What can you find here?

Part of the facilities is also an operational building with seating and basic refreshments for visitors.

Who is the place suitable for?

The shooting range is intended for adult enthusiasts of sports shooting, firearms license holders for training purposes, but also for tourists looking for an action-packed experience. Banské múzeum v prírode - Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Banské múzeum v prírode Banská Štiavnica is located on the edge of the town, in a picturesque valley below the Klinger tajch. The open-air museum operates under the auspices of the Slovenské banské múzeum v Banskej Štiavnici, which was established in 1964 and altogether represents a complex of 8 exhibitions.

It is our oldest and most extensive mining exhibition in terms of theme. It depicts the development of ore mining in the Central European region from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. The tour, along with an interesting commentary by a guide, will answer questions such as what it was like to be a miner, what machines they used, how hard their work was, what the techniques of descending into the mine (fáranie) were, and what miners had to master. This is a very interesting part of our history.

The horse-powered whim (gápel) is considered the most valuable exhibit of the Banská Štiavnica open-air museum. It is the only mine elevator engine-machine that has been preserved in Slovakia. Likewise, the Kachelman water-column hoisting engine is a very valuable exhibit, serving as a monument to the era of machines that saved Banská Štiavnica mining from extinction in the 18th century.

As part of the surface exhibition of the Banská Štiavnica open-air museum, not only a tour of unique technical mining monuments and buildings of the entire region is included, but also the very popular Náučno geologická expozícia. On a relatively small area, it depicts the geological development of Slovakia. Among the popular experiences of the Banská Štiavnica open-air museum is descending into the Bartolomej adit. This is an underground tour carried out under strict safety conditions (covered respiratory tract, helmet, coat, disinfection).

The open-air museum area is also suitable for families with children. They have an unforgettable experience in the mine and can shorten their time at the playground or by the little trains. Therefore, do not hesitate and plan a trip to this unique mining museum. When booking accommodation, the accommodation Banská Štiavnica page will be helpful to you.
