Počúvadlianske jazero is located near the village of Počúvadlo, not far from Banská Štiavnica, and is one of the most beautiful and most visited tajchs. This artificially created lake is set in the beautiful nature of the protected area Štiavnické vrchy. Between the 16th and the middle of the 19th century, several water reservoirs were built in this region, which had economic importance, especially for mining operations. Today, it is among the popular summer and winter destinations.

As the only one of all the tajchs in Slovakia, it has five dams. It lies at an altitude of 550 m above sea level. It covers an area of 12 ha and reaches a maximum depth of almost 11 m. In addition to the title of "largest tajch", it also holds another one, namely "coldest tajch". However, even in summer, this does not discourage vacationers. Quite the contrary, they find pleasant refreshment in it during hot summer days. On its shores, they will also find various snack bars with excellent draft beer, restaurants, and sports activities.

Hrad Sitno

Hrad Sitno

Ilija

In the district of Banská Štiavnica, the highest peak of Štiavnické vrchy, the Sitno peak, is the dominant feature. Right on it, you can find the ruins of the famous Sitno castle, which provided defense against enemies. Visit the village of Ilija, into whose cadastral area Sitniansky hrad falls.

The history of Sitno castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was established as a fortified hillfort on this peak. Three centuries later, a gate with a defensive function was added. The castle consisted of two parts: the upper castle palace and the lower castle. This castle was not lacking a courtyard, a water cistern, or loopholes either. Unfortunately, in the 18th century, estate uprisings definitively destroyed the castle, leaving only a ruin.

During its era of greatest prosperity, the castle was besieged in 1548 by royal troops. At that time, it was seized by the robber knight Melichar Balassa. Less than a hundred years later, the castle passed into the permanent care of the Koháry family. They remained the owners of the castle until its destruction. After 1710, at the end of the anti-Habsburg uprisings, the castle served as a source of building material for Rozhľadňa na Sitne and Kaštieľ vo Svätom Antone.

If you are intrigued by the history of the castle and remember various legends, one tells the tale of the fate of two brothers, the knights of Sitno. The older one received the entire estate from his father on his deathbed; the younger one was not happy with this and built his own castle on Malé Sitno. There may be some truth to these legends shrouded in mystery about Sitno castle.

You can reach Sitno castle by car from the village of Ilija. Following the green hiking trail (an asphalt path through Vlčia jama), the ascent is less demanding, though it takes longer. A path also leads to the castle from Počúvadlianske jazero, also along the green trail past cottages through the forest. After a while, you will reach Tatárska lúka with an educational trail, from where you can take the blue trail directly to the castle.

Along with visiting the castle, it is a great idea to plan an ascent to the Sitno peak. It is also possible to complete it on horseback. A horse, along with a professional guide, can be rented for you at Ranč Nádej in Svätý Anton. You can travel back into history at Kaštieľ vo Svätom Antone. If you come as a family with children, it is a good idea to book accommodation near Sitno castle in advance. In the village of Ilija, there is a choice of several guest houses or private accommodations in Ilija. We believe that you will fully enjoy your time conquering this attraction, also thanks to pleasant accommodation in Slovakia.

Štiavnické Bane

This body of water was built between 1738 and 1740. Its builder was J. T. Brinn. For the system to function fully, Bakomiho jazero was connected to the Malá Richňavská water adit.

Currently, the lake is primarily used for recreational purposes. On hot summer days, its clean, cool water will pleasantly refresh you. You can also hide from the scorching sun in the shade of the trees. Although the lake is not among the most sought-after in the region and many tourists do not even know about it, this is one of the reasons why a peaceful atmosphere prevails here. Many couples in love also use this place for romantic walks, after which a rest on a wooden bench comes in handy.

Reaching this beautiful smaller tajch is relatively simple. Even though access is somewhat worse than to other surrounding lakes, you simply need to park your car in the village of Štiavnické Bane at the parking lot just above the lake coming from Richňava. From here, a connecting pedestrian path leads to Bakomiho jazero.

Visit the circular Bašta Štiavnické Bane, which is one of the popular tourist attractions in this region.

Bašta v Štiavnických Baniach was once part of the defense system of the anti-Turkish fortifications. Today, it is one of the restored attractions of the village. This is mainly because the original bastion underwent reconstruction, and its founder built a museum inside dedicated to Maximilián Hell, a native of the village. During the tour, as part of one of the two exhibition sections, you can view information panels concerning, for example, the first observatory in Slovakia founded in 1878, the first mine surveying office, or the first school or hospital established in this mining region. On the next two floors, you will also take a look at significant milestones of the village. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of the aforementioned Catholic priest, Jesuit, astronomer, mathematician, and physicist Maximilián Hell.

The museum is open on weekdays (except Monday). A set of 175 wooden steps will lead you to it. In addition to regular tours, guided visits combined with sky observation are organized twice a year. This is possible thanks to a professional telescope that the village purchased for the exhibition. Naturally, an expert is also invited to these events.

If you would like to enrich your trip with other interesting places, we recommend visiting the beauty of Prírodný park AVES. If you visit this region in summer, there is an opportunity to swim in the surrounding tajchy artificial lakes. The closest to the bastion is Veľké Richnavské jazero. You can visit Škola v múzeu not only with children. With a headlamp on your head, you can explore Banské múzeum v prírode - Banská Štiavnica. After a continuous layer of snow falls, you can ski on the slopes of the popular Salamandra Ski Resort.

Don't feel like rushing back home? Stay longer and book accommodation near Bašta Štiavnické Bane. There is a choice of many apartments or smaller cottages in Štiavnické Bane. It only depends on your preferences which accommodation you choose. We will be happy to help you with your choice.

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici is an impressive Baroque sacred complex ranking among the most beautiful in all of Europe. It is situated on Scharffenberg hill, translated as Ostrý vrch, at an altitude of 726 m above sea level. It was created at a time when Banská Štiavnica belonged to the largest and most important free royal towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. It was precisely these favorable economic conditions that drove the development of the town culturally as well. Thanks to this, Kalvária Banská Štiavnica was built on the initiative of the Jesuit František Perger.

The foundation stone of the Horný kostol, one of the 22 structures of the calvary, was laid and solemnly blessed on September 14, 1744. The church, also referred to as the "German" church, was completed in 1745, when it was also consecrated. The rest of the complex was gradually built and subsequently consecrated as well. It took seven years, exactly until September 14, 1751. The construction was made possible thanks to financial donations from townspeople. The most prominent among them have their coats of arms placed on the facades of the chapels. On Trinity Sunday in 1751, the calvary was even visited by Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine himself.

Despite the construction of the calvary during the peak of the Baroque period, the structures maintained appropriate restraint. Their appearance was not distracting and primarily encouraged the inner reflection and contemplation of pilgrims. The entire complex consists of 17 stations (chapels), 3 churches (Dolný kostol, Sväté schody, Horný kostol), the Ecce Homo station (dungeon), and the Holy Sepulchre (Svätý hrob). The chapels are characterized by an unusual arrangement, as the story of Jesus begins in Nazareth. This is precisely what makes the Banská Štiavnica calvary exceptional.

The first three chapels are preparatory, leading to Dolný kostol. From there, the path continues to the seventh chapel and subsequently to Sväté schody, from where the path forks. The chapels on the left side depict the condemnation and torture of Jesus, ending with the scene of his crucifixion in Horný kostol. You walk around Svätý hrob and return along the other side, where the chapels depict the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The statuary of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is the culmination of the entire pilgrimage, located down below again, near Dolný kostol.

As is often the case with buildings, they require reconstruction over time, and the Banská Štiavnica calvary was no exception. The chapels were reconstructed for the first time in 1894. When the coup came in 1948, the ownership of the calvary passed to the state, which resulted in its gradual deterioration. Between 1978 and 1981, the state funded repairs that were mostly carried out by volunteers from the ranks of local believers. The Velvet Revolution probably had the greatest impact on the calvary; its decorations were stolen and subsequently sold off, and the buildings were devastated. What could be saved was relocated to Slovenské banské múzeum located at Starý zámok. Currently, visitors can view these items during the "Kalvária v azyle" exhibition. In 1993, Banská Štiavnica along with the calvary was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The year 2007 was marked by the calvary's inclusion in the list of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world. It was threatened with complete destruction, but since 2008, an extensive reconstruction has been underway to save this unique place. The buildings are being gradually restored; the reconstruction of Dolný kostol was completed first in 2013, followed by some chapels, the amphitheater, sculptural production, and in 2018, Horný kostol as well.

The calvary is among the popular spots in Banská Štiavnica. However, it is not visited only by believers, although pilgrimages, Holy Masses, or various other cultural events are often held here. Tourists are also interested in the history of the site, its flawless architectural design, the painting and artistic craft underlining the details, as well as the overall setting of the location into the natural environment, with which it creates perfect harmony. If you wish to visit this monument, on our website you will find truly beautiful accommodation near Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici. Kúpele Sklené Teplice

Kúpele Sklené Teplice

Sklené Teplice

Kúpele Sklené Teplice is a therapeutic thermal spa that ranks among the oldest in Slovakia. It is spread out at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level at the foot of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, set in the picturesque nature of Sklené Teplice. Thanks to their composition with a high content of magnesium and calcium, the springs in the spa have a beneficial effect in helping patients treat diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Kúpele Sklené Teplice can pride itself on being probably the last spa where the water is not chemically treated. It is only cooled down to make it acceptable for human skin.

The history of Kúpele Sklené Teplice began to be written around the year 1550, when the first mention of it was preserved. A great peculiarity of that time was the discovery of springs that gushed from a travertine cover. There were several of them, but two were nevertheless a bit more significant, and that was thanks to the temperature of their water. One was pleasantly warm, the second even hot, with a temperature of 52.3 °C. Another natural peculiarity found was a cave steam bath, Parenica. It is a European unique phenomenon where the water gushes directly under the cave. Its temperature is 42 °C. Until the end of the 17th century, their owners were various feudal lords, after which the spa became state property. Thanks to the management of the Mining Office in Banská Štiavnica, the construction of spa houses took place. Subsequently, the gushing mineral springs also began to be used for therapeutic purposes. There were 14 springs, each with its own name, 7 of which are currently used.

Kúpele Sklené Teplice offers more than 60 treatments with various focuses. Prescription treatments include Bioptron, diathermy, diadynamic and interference currents, hydrogalvan, magnetotherapy, oxygen therapy, Phyaction, Solux, gas injections, and Scottish douches. In addition to these, there is still a choice of various other treatments for which a doctor's prescription is not required. Water treatments include a classic or scented bubble bath, a whirlpool bath for upper and lower limbs, a whirlpool cascade, a foot bath, and a whirlpool. You can enjoy a stay in 5 thermal pools. These are the cave steam bath, the mining thermal bath, the Relax Thermal pool, the pool in the Kúpeľný dôm Goethe spa house, and the Mary Theresa bath.

You can look forward to classic, scented oil, reflexology, Ayurvedic, Indian, underwater, and hot stone massages, cupping, as well as various types of Thai massages. Beauty treatments are popular, including anti-cellulite and smoothing peelings, a cocoa face wrap, body forming, Rolletic, Prestige Body Wrap slimming, a solarium, and gold therapy. The saunas offer a wellness sauna world as well as a family sauna in the antique style. Among other treatments, there are ozone therapy, paraffin, parafango, kinesio taping, hydrokinesitherapy, peat wraps, various types of lymphatic drainage, inhalations, a salt cave, and physical education.

Since Kúpele Sklené Teplice is truly popular, it is not excluded that you might spot a famous personality during your stay. Famous actors, athletes, singers, and politicians often use stays and treatments here. Even a member of the royal family from Bahrain was treated here. In the past, the spa was even honored with a visit by the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose name is borne by one of the spa houses. A stay at Kúpele Sklené Teplice is also suitable for sports camps. Football, fitness, and karate clubs have already completed their camps here.

The spa is also an ideal place for organizing corporate or private events. A lounge and a meeting room are available. Naturally, they are equipped with modern technology. In addition, the spa staff will ensure the serving of delicious food. After all, what is a better culmination of a training workshop than a good homemade dinner? Probably only a stay in pleasantly warm thermal water. Or would you rather let your body be pampered by the experienced hands of masseurs? It is entirely up to you.

You certainly will not be bored during your spa treatment. The beautiful spa park connected to the forest park offers a perfect oasis of peace, where you can calm your mind under the treetops. You can sit with a cup of coffee and a delicious cake in the day bar or in the historical cafe, play table tennis or bowling. Let yourself be beautified in the hairdressing salon and enjoy a themed evening with live music. Nearby, commercial fishing, hiking, or cycling are also possible, and the spa will certainly offer you an optional excursion to the surrounding mining towns. Near the spa, you will also find Pustý hrad, the ruins of Teplica castle.

Nová Baňa

The location is situated on top of the Háj hill in the cadastral area of the town of Nová Baňa, in the Žarnovica district. The lookout tower was solemnly opened in 2017 and reaches a height of approximately 21 meters, built on the site of a former andesite quarry. The structure features three observation levels, and its design, combining natural stone at the bottom with a wooden frame on the upper floors, is inspired by mining headframes. From the highest level, a 360-degree view opens up to the Novobanská kotlina basin, the ridges of Štiavnické vrchy, Vtáčnik, and, under good visibility conditions, even the distant peaks of Nízke Tatry. A marked educational trail leads directly from the town to the lookout tower, passing through picturesque meadows and forested stretches, with the route lined with information boards about the region's geology and history. Breznický hrad

Breznický hrad

Tekovská Breznica

On the forested Hrádok hill, which rises above the village of Tekovská Breznica in the Žarnovica district, you will find the ruins of Breznický hrad castle. From the 13th century, it served a guard function on the western edge of Štiavnické vrchy. Set out along the hiking trail directly from the village for approximately 1.5 km and enjoy the far-reaching views that Hrad Breznica has to offer.

The castle remembers a lot in its history. It experienced several pillages and was conquered by almost all lords who set their minds to it, including Matúš Čák Trenčiansky and Matej Korvín. After being conquered by Turkish forces, the castle was occupied by robber knights and gradually fell into ruin starting in the 18th century. However, the view that greets you after climbing to the ruins is well worth it. You can see all the way to the monastery in Hronský Beňadik or the town of Nová Baňa. In the vicinity of Breznický hrad, you will also find the remains of two structures, namely Hrádok na Sokolej skale and the Strážna veža watchtower at the Pustý hrad site. Legend has it that after dark, the ruins and their surroundings are haunted by a cursed maiden who, according to folklore, was a traitress and helped facilitate an enemy attack on the castle.

You can also enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature in the stredné Pohronie region by visiting Starohutský vodopád waterfall in Nová Baňa, in the Stará Huta area, or enjoy relaxation, peace, and sunshine by the Tajch water reservoir. Tajch, whose surroundings are framed by the Pohronský Inovec mountain range, is a great place for swimming in the summer and for ice skating in the event of a freezing winter. So, if you visit stredné Pohronie in the winter, do not miss the nearby Ski centrum Drozdovo in the village of Veľká Lehota.

Šášovský hrad

Šášovský hrad

Žiar nad Hronom

Hrad Šášov castle stands atop a massive rock formation on the left bank of the river, in the outer area of the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, directly above the valley of the Hron river. You will find it in the district of Žiar nad Hronom – Šášovské Podhradie. Many legends revolve around its origins. One of them tells of the unprecedented heroism of the court jester Ladislav. The lord of Zvolenský hrad castle got lost deep in the forest during a hunting trip. Suddenly, a enraged she-bear appeared before him and bit him in the back. Seeing this, the jester did not hesitate, used his agility, and struck the bear in the head with an axe. Touched by his bravery, the nobleman promised out of gratitude to build him a castle on that very spot. Soon, a fortress bearing the name of his savior's profession stood on Orlia skala rock.

The castle is first mentioned in a document from 1253. It was most likely built by the brothers Vincent and Peter Vanch. Around 1306, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky seized it, and after his death, it passed through the hands of many different owners. Among the most famous were King Matej Korvín, the Archbishop of Eger Urban Dóczy, and the Hungarian prefect Gašpar Lippay.

A major turning point came in 1677, when it was captured and plundered during the Thököly Uprising. The subsequent destruction was completed in 1708 by imperial troops. From that time on, it lost its defensive function, remained abandoned, and began to fall into ruin. Gunfire during World War II in 1945 also caused difficult times when part of a retreating German army unit set up position in the castle tower.

Šášovský hrad castle was built on the Pohronská hradná cesta (Pohronie Castle Route) and was meant to serve as a defensive and watch fortress. Originally, it consisted of a Gothic palace, residential and farm buildings, a chapel, a water cistern, defensive towers, and, by all accounts, had two outer baileys. Two fortified courtyards protected the Gothic-Renaissance upper castle, and a round bastion guarded the entrance to the palace.

To this day, perimeter walls several meters high have been preserved. The best-preserved parts are the remains of the upper castle, the Gothic palace, and the triangular tower. In 2015, the remains of a bread oven of unusual dimensions were found here, indicating the presence of a castle bakery. Since 2003, conservation and restoration work has been underway to preserve the remains for future generations.

A green-marked hiking trail leads directly from the village to the ruins. The ascent takes about 20 minutes, and the gently sloping terrain can easily be handled by children. From the castle rock, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the Hron river and the entire valley of Šášovské Podhradie.

If you have planned your hike to the ruins on a hot summer day, head straight from your walk to the refreshing pools of Plážové kúpalisko Žiar nad Hronom. Another interesting place worth visiting is Krajská hvezdáreň a planetárium Maximiliána Hella, where you have a unique opportunity to see our galaxy up close.

An adrenaline adventure in the form of riding Monster scooters awaits you in the nearby village of Lehôtka pod Brehmi. If you wish to continue exploring this beautiful region, book accommodation in the vicinity of Šášovský hrad castle. Accommodation in Žiar nad Hronom includes charming cottages and cabins as well as comfortably furnished guesthouses. It is entirely up to you what appeals to your heart most. We wish you a pleasant and peaceful stay.
