Moldavské múzeum - Kováčska vyhňa
The Národopisné múzeum s kováčskou vyhňou is situated in a settlement on Hlavná ulica street number 130 in the village of Moldava nad Bodvou. It is an exhibition of the Slovak Technical Museum in Košice (Slovenské technické múzeum v Košiciach). The building is a rare surviving example that authentically depicts a specialized small-town and village blacksmith workshop. Its tour is accessible only by prior arrangement through the Town Cultural Center. PhMr. Gustáv Stibrányi, an honorary citizen of the town, has some of his archaeological finds exhibited in the museum.
The museum building was constructed from stone around the year 1830. It is a six-room single-story folk building representing a typical Abov region house from the mid-19th century. In the front section is the workspace of the original owner of the property. It features an authentic blacksmith's forge with an open hearth, an open chimney, and a blacksmith's workbench. Upon a detailed inspection of the individual tools, an attentive visitor will not miss the fact that horses were also shod here, which is further confirmed by the presence of a shelter in front of the forge.
Moving further into the house, you will see three rooms. In the middle of the house is a kitchen, furnished and equipped just as it originally was at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Next to it is a room featuring the shoemaking guild, which had a long tradition in the village of Moldava. The rear room contains displays of tools from various guilds, tailoring, hatmaking, and gingerbread making.
At the same time, there is a small gallery or picture hall where period photographs and paintings of the town are displayed. Besides these, you can also view a handloom, which is still functional today. The rear section of the building was of an agricultural character. Here you will find a stable for livestock and a space stored with period tools and preserved agricultural machinery.
Take a trip to this unique blacksmith's workshop and explore the surrounding area as well. Eastern Slovakia indeed has much to offer, whether it is great attractions or accommodation options. You can find accommodation on the page accommodation Moldava nad Bodvou.
