The starting point for hiking to Jánošíkove diery is the villages of Štefanová and Terchová.

More about Jánošíkove diery

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Malá Fatra bears the name of a famous highwayman legend. The one who took from the rich and gave to the poor. Let yourself be carried away by mysterious stories from the time of highwaymen and the beauty of nature. Let yourself be drawn into a fairytale.

Malá Fatra National Park earned its status thanks to the rare species of plants and animals living on its territory. Set out on a hike with open eyes, and besides wonderful views, you might also catch a glimpse of one of the local forest inhabitants. Interesting chasms, gorges, and rocky peaks are typical for the Malá Fatra mountain range. Terchová, the birthplace of Juro Jánošík, will win you over with culture and history that you can feel at every step. Today, the majestic figure of the most famous Slovak highwayman stands out directly above the village, thanks to a larger-than-life steel statue. A view of the village and the entire surrounding area presents itself not only from the feet of this legend-shrouded figure, but also from the Terchovské srdce lookout tower. It was ranked among the most beautiful lookout towers in Slovakia. It is up to you whether you admire the surrounding landscape just like this, from a distance, or get to know it truly up close, thanks to a rich network of hiking trails. A challenge for hiking enthusiasts is conquering Vrátna dolina, Malý Kriváň, or Veľký Rozsutec.

Jánošíkove diery consists of three parts: Nové diery, Horné diery, and Dolné diery. Set aside at least 3 to 4 hours of time to complete the entire route. All parts have marked hiking trails. Dolné diery additionally features a built educational trail. During the winter season, do not plan a trip to Horné diery, which is closed at that time. Along the way, you will encounter more than 20 waterfalls ranging in height from 1 to 5 meters, which together form Vodopády Dierového potoka. Thanks to an unconventional climate, the rock formations are home to various rare species of plants and animals.

Kalvária v Terchovej

Kalvária v Terchovej

Terchová

This specific Calvary, Kalvária v Terchovej, ranks among the non-traditional calvaries in Slovakia. It is located in a typical scattered settlement village in northern Slovakia, in the Žilinský kraj. The village of Terchová is one of the important tourist centers of Malá Fatra, but it is also sought after as a pilgrimage site. Take a day off work or plan a sun-drenched weekend spiritually at every single architecturally designed station of the Way of the Cross up to Oravcové hill.

The famous legend of Jánošík is tied to the village as such. However, it is also sought after for other popular attractions in Terchová. This interesting calvary is unique precisely for its stylized crosses. Instead of traditional chapels, you will find stone crosses with glass details laid on the ground, along with statues.

You can start your journey above Ďurkovský laz near the local agricultural cooperative. Following the yellow hiking trail, you can easily reach Oravcové hill. A walk to the top takes about 35 minutes, where a massive stone altar is located. You will also be captivated by unique views of the surrounding pristine nature.

The author of the Terchovská kalvária site is local academic sculptor and native Milan Opalka. This man was the first to contribute to the founding of Cyrilo-metodské dni, which have been held here for over a decade. Based on this need, a project was realized by the village, and in 2006, the calvary received a blessing from a spiritual father.

Should this easy hike combined with spiritual enrichment not be enough for you, we recommend one of the three sections of Jánošíkove diery. You will make full use of your hiking boots, and after such an active day, a rest in one of the accommodations will come in handy. It is best to choose accommodation near Kalvária v Terchovej. Nearby, there are mostly cottages and chalets preferred by families with children or larger groups. If you arrive as a couple and also have wellness at Relaxačné centrum Terchovec on your trip itinerary, stay in a room at a guesthouse Terchová.

Drevený betlehem Terchová

Drevený betlehem Terchová

Terchová

In the center of the village of Terchová, which is known as the tourist center of Malá Fatra thanks to its geographical location, lies a unique attraction. The wooden moving nativity scene belongs among the unique treasures in Slovakia and is visited by numerous people every year. On your list of places that you can see among the attractions in Terchová, definitely do not miss this spot.

During opening hours, you can come and see the beauty of the woodcarving with your own eyes. Local folk masters paid great attention to detail and embellished the largest church in Slovakia dedicated to the Thessalonian brothers. In Kostol sv. Cyrila a Metoda, a nativity scene made of linden wood consisting of three parts is crafted.

The first part of the nativity scene focuses on depicting the traditional history of the village along with its typical crafts. Here you will find figures engaging in agriculture, metal production, and other manual work. In the second part, you can look at the place where Jesus Christ was born, namely a humble dwelling with a manger and farm animals. In the third part of the nativity scene, a contrast is visible. It consists in the depiction of Jerusalem as a city full of luxury and prosperity.

This breathtaking work was created by the hands of the Terchová folk woodcarver Štefan Hanuliak. He was assisted in his work by figure caster Jozef Holúb and movement mechanic Štefan Krištofík. The nativity scene as such is the second largest nativity scene in Slovakia and is enriched with something new every year. A keen eye will not miss that there are still plastic figures in the nativity scene. These are gradually being replaced with wooden ones.

If this masterpiece caught your interest and you have already viewed the nativity scene, be sure to plan trips to the surroundings. The village of Terchová is sought after mainly for its many points of interest. You can get closer to the legend of Jánošík directly at Socha Juraja Jánošíka, which towers over the village. It might be worth considering booking a typical wooden house in Terchová and enjoying views directly facing it as well. From a bird's-eye perspective, you will look at the beauty of Orava nature from the observation tower Terchovské srdce. Together with your children, plan an excellent ski trip during winter from a guesthouse in Terchová in Vrátna dolina at the resort Vrátna Free Time Zone. We will gladly recommend the best accommodation near Drevený betlehem Terchová.

Rozhľadňa Terchovské srdce

Rozhľadňa Terchovské srdce

Terchová

The Rozhľadňa Terchovské srdce observation tower is located on Oblaz hill and is beautifully visible upon arriving in Terchová from the direction of Žilina. It offers its visitors 3 viewing terraces from which they can observe the surrounding nature of Malá Fatra as well as the village itself. The observation tower is 30 meters high and, thanks to its easily accessible location, is suitable for anyone. That is why the Rozhľadňa Terchovské srdce observation tower is an ideal destination for mothers with children, mobility-impaired visitors, or elderly people.

This relatively newly built observation tower, accessible since October 2015, is the final stop on an educational trail focused on discovering the fauna and flora of Národný park Malá Fatra. The route is approximately one kilometer long. Ascent directly onto the tower is via a narrower staircase.

The name of the observation tower originated from the song: "To terchovské srdce na dvoje sa delí, jedna strana plače, druhá sa veselí..." ("That Terchová heart splits in two, one side cries, the other rejoices..."). The older generation also recalls the filming of the 1935 movie Jánošík featuring actor Paľo Bielik. Until recently, a gallows, a prop from this movie, stood on Oblaz hill. It was precisely this prop that inspired the well-known Slovak artist Alojz Mucha when designing the observation tower.

Oblaz hill is also known as a commemorative site. Several historical events took place here. It is somewhat chilling, but here you can also find a mass grave of local residents from the 19th-century plague epidemic. Today, Oblaz is mainly sought after by visitors because of the steel observation tower. It offers visitors beautiful views of Malý Rozsutec, Veľký Rozsutec, Boboty, Tiesňavy, Poludňový Grúň, Obšívanky, or Sokolie.

The observation tower is accessible free of charge throughout the entire year. Feel free to come here even in winter and enjoy rest in Relax centrum Terchovec in addition to the views of the snow-covered landscape. In summer, you can take a ride on Terchovský vláčik. We can recommend verified accommodation in Terchová, which you can find on our portal.

Adventure golf

Adventure golf

Zázrivá

Do you love nature, active relaxation, and interesting sports challenges? Let us invite you to Adventure golf in Zázrivá. This lower Orava village, located in the Dolný Kubín district, has prepared a real sports treat for its visitors. It is not minigolf, nor is it traditional golf. So what is it really about? It is classic golf with preserved terrain obstacles, but in a miniature size. Can't imagine it? Accept our invitation to Adventure golf below Veľký Rozsutec and try this alternative to the noble sport.

In Zázrivá, golf is played on an 18-hole adventure golf course with artificial turf. It is the first course of its kind in Slovakia. Players here receive golf balls, classic golf clubs, and minigolf putters. During their game, they will encounter various terrain irregularities, water hazards, and sand bunkers, much like on a full-sized golf course. This fun sports activity originating from North America has become a popular recreational sport and family entertainment. The golf course in Zázrivá is visited not only by groups of enthusiasts seeking fun, but also by families with children who enjoy spending time together here. All golf performances in Zázrivá are watched over by the majestic Veľký Rozsutec, which completes the beautiful natural scenery of this place.

And how is Adventure golf played? Individuals or groups of players can join the game. The maximum recommended capacity for one hole is 4 players. The playing area consists of 18 holes numbered sequentially, which must be followed during play. The goal of the game is to get the ball into the hole with the fewest number of strokes. The winner is the player who achieves the lowest total number of strokes across all holes. Will you manage to get the balls into the hole while avoiding all the hazards of the course? If your ball ends up in the sand or water, you can try playing from there. Alternatively, you can place the ball 15 cm from the edge of the obstacle. You will receive a penalty point for this, but don't let it discourage you. The main goal of this game is not to win, but to have great fun in the company of family or friends.

If your travels through lower Orava bring you to Zázrivá, be sure not to miss this unique adventure on the golf course. And when you conquer all 18 holes, set off on a trip to nearby Terchová. Here you can go on an extremely popular hike through Jánošíkove diery, take a walk to the impressive Socha Juraja Jánošíka monument, or visit Mini ZOO Terchová, which will put a smile on the faces of the youngest visitors in particular. Veľký Rozsutec

Veľký Rozsutec

Terchová

Veľký Rozsutec is a very prominent peak of the Malá Fatra, a sub-unit of the Krivánska Malá Fatra. It towers to an altitude of 1,609.7 m a. s. l. Its height, but certainly also its shape, helped it become a symbol of the region where the most famous highwayman Juraj Jánošík operated, and actually of the entire Malá Fatra. As the chočský príkrov gradually thrust over the softer layers of the krížňanský príkrov, this majestic peak was formed. Its summit and the surrounding rock cities, which are the largest in the territory of Slovakia, were formed by erosion.

The locality where this majestic hill is located falls into the Žilinský kraj. It is at the boundary of the Žilina and Dolný Kubín districts, extending into the cadastral territory of the villages of Párnica and Terchová, and marginally also Zázrivá.

It is said that Veľký Rozsutec is a kind of chest of accumulated treasures of the Slovak national hero Juraj Jánošík, which he hid there. Purportedly, only someone whose nature resembles that of Jánošík will find and dig them up. That is, someone who does not betray their ideals just for anything.

Veľký Rozsutec is rightly considered one of the most beautiful peaks in all of Slovakia, and it certainly has quite a lot of competition. This is undoubtedly assisted by its location in the protected nature reserve Rozsutec, but especially by the fabulous view that you will see from the summit. Indeed, judge for yourself, from above you will see Malý Rozsutec, Veľký Choč, Chleb, Stoh, the mountain ranges of Kysuce, Orava, and the peaks of the Západné Tatry. In addition, you will find yourself surrounded by unique and truly rare species of fauna and flora, as the locality ranks among the richest in Slovakia from a botanical perspective. And as if that were not enough, Veľký Rozsutec is also depicted on the logo of the Národný park Nízke Tatry.

When you reach the summit, sit there for a while and soak in the atmosphere. So many shades of green on the hills and so many shades of blue in the background. That beauty cannot be described in words. The views will charge you with energy, and you will have plenty to spare. Before descending, do not forget to take a photo by the cross; it is almost a tradition there.

The hike to Veľký Rozsutec ranks among the more demanding ones; a good level of fitness and ideally regular physical activity are certainly necessary. Given that the hill is located in a nature reserve, there is a seasonal closure from March 1 to June 15, which must be respected and observed. Instead, plan your hike for winter, for instance, when Rozsutec is truly magnificent, or alternatively for autumn, when nature in Jánošíkove diery turns into a painter and the trees play with all colors. Or will you take advantage of the period of the well-known and expected Malá Fatra inversions? It is entirely up to you.

Your feet will lead you to the summit via one of the following trails. Following the green tourist trail, you will start from Štefanová via the Medziholie saddle. Along the blue tourist trail, you can go from Párnica via the Medziholie saddle or from Terchová via Jánošíkove diery and the Medzirozsutce saddle. Finally, there is the red tourist trail along the main ridge, which leads from Zázrivá via the Medzirozsutce saddle or from the Medziholie saddle, where multiple trails subsequently intersect.

Coming to the region of Juraj Jánošík and not climbing Veľký Rozsutec would truly be a missed opportunity for an amazing trip. If we have inspired you enough, do not hesitate and directly book accommodation near Veľký Rozsutec. Choose accommodation Terchová and accommodation Štefanová on our pages. See for yourself whether you will dare to take on this unforgettable hike or if it will suffice for you to visit the attractions around Terchová.

Národný park Malá Fatra

Národný park Malá Fatra

Varín

Národný park Malá Fatra is located in northern Slovakia in the Žilina Region, within the districts of Žilina and Dolný Kubín. The Malá Fatra mountain range is the fourth largest mountain range in Slovakia, and its peaks boast a high number of visiting tourists. This national park is a sought-after destination for winter skiing and summer walks through wonderful nature.

Malá Fatra was declared a national park quite late. Due to the impact of human encroachment, this area was designated a protected landscape area in 1967. It was not until 1988 that Malá Fatra qualified as a national park. Its administration is today located in the village of Varín, which is also the gateway to the park.

Malá Fatra consists of two parts: the Kriváň part and the Lúčky part (Krivánska Fatra and Lúčanská Fatra). Krivánska Fatra extends north of the Váh River. The highest peak and at the same time the highest peak of the entire Malá Fatra range is Veľký Kriváň, which sits at an altitude of 1,709 m above sea level. No less important peaks are Veľký Rozsutec (1,610 m above sea level) and Malý Kriváň (1,671 m above sea level). The Veľký Rozsutec peak itself is depicted on the emblem of Národný park Malá Fatra.

Many a hiker can boast of ascending the third highest peak of Malá Fatra, Chleb (1,646 m above sea level). It is part of the ridge hike of Krivánska Fatra and is easily accessible not only for hikers, but also for families with children or seniors, as they can reach it by cable car. The chairlift starts in Vrátna dolina and takes you from Snilovské sedlo up to the Chleb mountain. From there, you can admire views of Malá Fatra in all its beauty. The Vrátna Free Time Zone resort is an ideal place for skiing as well as adrenaline sports such as paragliding.

Another popular trip in Národný park Malá Fatra is Chata pod Chlebom (1,423 m above sea level). The mountain hut is accessible from the cable car in Vrátna dolina or along the marked hiking trail from the village of Šútovo. On the way to the hut, you can admire the 38-meter-high Šútovský vodopád waterfall or Mojžišove pramene, which spring from the rock wall of Krivánska Malá Fatra.

The second part of the national park, Lúčanská Fatra, lies on the southern side of Malá Fatra. This part is lower and less forested. In summer, hikers usually go on hikes from Fačkovské sedlo, from where they can reach the rocky peak Kľak (1,352 m above sea level). Here beneath it lies the beautiful 30-meter-high Kľacký vodopád waterfall. In winter, skiers will come into their own at the popular ski resort Martinské hole, near the town of Martin.

Malá Fatra will charm you not only with its diverse flora, where forests alternate with dwarf pine and primeval forest, but also with its fauna. Wolves, lynxes, and wildcats live here. A large population of the brown bear has also been confirmed. Be cautious during your walks, as you may come across a viper, grass snake, or fire salamander. Birds thrive here just as well. An attentive eye will spot a golden eagle or a falcon, and if you prick up your ears, you will hear a woodpecker tapping. In Národný park Malá Fatra, there are up to 29 animal species of European importance.

Chleb

Chleb

Terchová

The hike to the peak of Chleb is one of the most popular hiking routes in Malá Fatra. At an elevation of 1,646 m a.s.l., it holds third place among the peaks of this mountain range. Thanks to its easy accessibility, it is a suitable destination for trips even for families with smaller children or seniors. However, more experienced hikers will also find plenty to enjoy, as they can try longer and more demanding hiking trails from Terchová as well as from Šútovo.

So, what are the options for the ascent? For leisure hikers and adults bringing their little ones, we recommend taking the cable car that runs from Chata Vrátna to Snilovské sedlo. From there, a pleasant, approximately 40-minute walk awaits you along the red-marked trail with a very gentle incline. Below the peak, the Chata pod Chlebom mountain hut will be a welcome sight, offering a place to relax and purchase refreshments. Of course, you can also opt for the walking route, which takes 3 hours from the valley of Vrátna dolina via Snilovské sedlo to Chleb. Demanding hikers may be drawn to the ascent from the side of Šútovo and Kráľovany. This trail starts in the Rieka area and continues through the valley of Šútovská dolina, past the Šútovský vodopád waterfall, Mojžišove pramene springs, Kopiská, Sedlo pod Hromovým pass, and finally to the long-sought Chleb. The climb takes 4 and a half hours, with an elevation gain of 1,223 meters. However, when covered in snow, the route is difficult to traverse.

The peak of Chleb is part of a national nature reserve. Rare plants and animals can be found here, with protected dwarf pine communities and alpine meadows being particularly significant. At first glance, you will be captivated by the distinctive rock cliffs, gorges, and stone seas. Beautiful views of the surrounding landscape open up from the summit itself.

Chleb is accessible year-round. While spring, summer, and colorful autumn offer high-quality hiking and the chance to discover the nature of Malá Fatra, in winter the area offers excellent skiing. Here, you can try one of the steepest ski slopes in Malá Fatra – Oštiepková mulda. Additionally, the nearby ski resort Vrátna Free Time Zone is open for up to 4 months a year.

If the opportunity for hiking or skiing in this area has caught your interest, book accommodation near the peak of Chleb and make the most of a long weekend to explore the entire Národný park Malá Fatra. If you love nature, do not miss the hike to Veľký Kriváň and take in the sights of the Šútovský vodopád. Alternatively, draw inspiration from the chalets and picturesque wooden houses, and book accommodation in Terchová.
