Rímske opevnenie Gerulata
The Bratislava borough of Rusovce resembles a smaller town in character. Thanks in part to its interesting history, it is visited annually by several thousand tourists who want to see the Roman fort Rímske opevnenie Gerulata with their own eyes.
This borough is located in the southwestern part of Podunajská nížina, on the right bank of the Dunaj river, south of Petržalka. While exploring a vanished local castle, remnants of a Roman military camp were accidentally found here. Although the camp was known about, no targeted research had ever been conducted to discover it prior to that. According to research to date, the origin of the camp was dated to the 1st to 4th centuries AD.
Upon looking into history, we find that the northern border of the Roman Empire shifted all the way to the middle course of the Dunaj during this period. The present-day territory of Rusovce thus belonged to a Roman province. In order for the Romans to defend themselves against the raids of Germanic tribes, they built the military camp Gerulata here. It was integrated into the extensive defense system Limes Romanus. In 1963, the site was declared a cultural monument.
Currently, a museum stands at this location, with its most well-preserved part being a quadratic structure. Its dimensions are 30 x 30 m and the perimeter wall is 2.4 m wide. The tower-like structure stands here on 12 pillars. In the center of the building, you can notice the remains of a well, and the southern wing of the building features Late Antique paving on the floor. However, museum staff will tell you more during an engaging tour. You can also view the presented exhibits from the Roman era in a large modern exhibition hall that forms part of this complex. The museum is accessible from May to September, and for a few coins, you will learn a wealth of interesting information. Access to the museum is also possible for mobility-impaired visitors. The tour will take roughly an hour of your time.
If you are the type of person who needs to discover other interesting places as well, uncover the charm of modern art at the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum. You can cool down your sun-warmed bodies at the lake Veľký Draždiak. Perhaps you might also try swimming at Čunovské jazerá, even though it is officially not allowed here. The only use of the surroundings of these two lakes comes in the form of nudist beaches. You don't have to experience boredom if you book a lane at Petržalka Bowling Center for the evening. What could be better than winning at bowling against friends in this physically undemanding yet skill-intensive game?
