Legendary zubačkas have been running on the cog railway line since 1970. The beginnings of operation are connected with the World Nordic Ski Championships, which were to take place right at Štrbské Pleso. Within two years, a 4.78 km long track was built and put into operation here. Operation was suspended in July 2020 due to extensive reconstruction. A complete replacement of the original track, its connection to the TEŽ line, and the replacement of vehicles were carried out. The original rolling stock was replaced by hybrid trains that can run both on the cog railway and on standard railway tracks. Operation was restarted in February 2022.

This is the first time this record has been broken in Slovakia, and by all accounts, within the whole of Central Europe as well.

The Gánovské travertíny reach a height of approximately two meters. Travertiine is a type of limestone created by the precipitation of freshwater thermal springs. Right at this spot in the 1920s, a blaster during travertine mining found a cast of part of a Neanderthal skull that contained the brain. He initially considered the cast to be an animal skull. He handed it over to an employee of the Národné múzeum v Prahe, unaware of the importance and significance of his discovery. Gánovské travertíny subsequently became an extraordinarily important site of fossil fauna and flora as well.

Not far from the travertine mound, there is a geyser that spouts thermal water every 30 minutes. Thermal springs with healing mineral water have been known in Gánovce since 1549, when Gánovské kúpele were mentioned for the first time. Today they operate under the name Aqua Spa Gánovce, and you can combine a visit to them in your trip itinerary with a walk to Gánovské travertíny and Gejzír.

Kúpele Vyšné Hágy is the most famous spa for the treatment of tuberculosis and respiratory diseases. The spa in Vyšné Hágy was built by the Central Social Insurance Fund. In 1935, a construction project for a large sanatorium began due to an increased number of tuberculosis cases. The spa opened its doors to its first patients in June 1941. At that time, this treatment institute was one of the largest in Central Europe. To this day, it maintains the quality of its treatment methods and procedures.

The sanatorium has 8 floors and a length of 270 meters. An interesting fact is that it lies at an altitude of 1,130 m a.s.l. In addition, it has nearly 2,000 rooms and around 500 beds for patients. Since its inception, Kúpele Vyšné Hágy has specialized in pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. In 1948, MUDr. Karol Šiška performed the first lung resection in Slovakia here. In 1958, as many as 286 of these operations were performed.

Throughout the entire period from its establishment to the present day, the treatment spa has maintained highly qualified experts as well as modern instrumentation and equipment. In 1988, the Center for Thoracic Surgery was established here. The institute diagnoses and treats various types of respiratory diseases, including lung tumors and functional lung examinations. It has also expanded its operations into other medical fields: urology and gynecology, ophthalmology, immuno-allergology, and gastroenterology.

Vyšné Hágy is known not only as a spa town. Many might know that here they can find the highest-located primary school in Slovakia. There is an old, no longer used railway line and a tunnel through which the spa was once supplied not only with food, but also with coal for heating. A path along a circular hiking trail from the aforementioned village of Pohorelá leads to it year-round. It is not a demanding hike at all, and no extra special physical fitness is required. Families with children and seniors can easily handle it. A great benefit of the trail is the surrounding area through which you pass. Along the way, wonderful views open up to you, namely of the peaks of the Nízke Tatry mountains, Muránska planina, and the Hron valley.

The surroundings of the waterfall are beautiful. Rocks, greenery, and trees are everywhere. Added to that are the sounds of falling water and a gurgling stream, just like in a fairytale. While walking, look not only around you but also beneath your feet. You might notice tree roots and mushrooms, as well as vipers, especially during the warm season. The entrance to the cave was known to local residents for many years. However, explorers entered its dark depths for the first time only in 1922. The first visitors came in 1928, when it operated in a provisional mode. The definitive opening to the public took place in 1954; until then, research and discoveries of new cave spaces were underway.

The cave decoration is interesting due to its coloring. There are not only classic yellowish dolomites, but also blue-white and glassy blue limestones and dolomites. Under artificial lighting, they create an interesting color contrast.

Važecká jaskyňa is famous for the archaeological discovery of cave bear remains. An exposition focused on this predator is part of the cave's guided tour route. Here, you will find its remains, a restored skeleton, and a statue of a cave bear. This will give you a better idea of its appearance and size. You will learn even more about its life from the educational panels.

The tour route is relatively short, spanning only 235 meters and taking about 25 minutes. Nevertheless, you will learn a lot of interesting information and see decorations in a small area that many other caves cannot boast of, while the cave bear exposition will surely intrigue many of you.

The cave did not always have the grand name known today; locals used to nickname it "ice hole" due to the cold spreading from it. The first explorers entered its depths in 1870, and just a year later it was opened to the public. It thus became one of the earliest opened caves in the world. Definitive electric lighting was installed in the cave in 1887. An interesting fact is that public ice skating was permitted here for a certain period.

The length of the route accessible to tourists is 515 meters of icy magnificence. A half-hour tour will show you the most precious, permanently glaciated parts of the cave, mainly Veľká sieň and Malá sieň. Prepare yourself for a considerable temperature shock; in the coldest parts of the cave, it can drop to -4 °C. So do not forget to bring warm clothing.

On the threshold of the summer season, in the first weekend of July, the Nízke Tatry region comes alive with folk traditions and for a few days becomes the center of Slovak culture.

The Folklóry festival is a showcase of the regular and tireless work of many institutions, associations, and individuals who are engaged in the field of traditional folk culture. Over its 66-year history, the festival has become the premier showcase of the traditions of the Slovak nation. On average, 1,400 participants from folklore and singing groups, children's ensembles, soloist musicians, and dancers take care of a rich program every year. The participation of folk craftsmen, artists, and woodcarvers is very significant. Various dance, music, and singing workshops, craft creative workshops, and entertainment programs for children enjoy increasing popularity.

By its existence, the festival significantly contributes to the revival and preservation of precious cultural values. The history of its origin is interesting and a pleasant memory is attached to it. The Kriváň ethnographic troupe from Východná participated in the festivities in the Moravian town of Strážnica in 1952. Their performance was so successful that Kriváň won the award "sweetheart of Strážnica". This experience so enthused and inspired the members of Kriváň that they decided to organize the Festival of Songs and Dances at home in Východná.

The first year of the festivities in Východná took place in 1953 on a makeshift stage and lasted only one day. At the 2nd year, the professional artistic ensemble SĽUK performed as an important guest, and the 3rd year was already a two-day event. Lúčnica presented itself as a guest at that time. Historically significant was the 4th year of the festival, when new thematic programs were added, such as a review of children's folk ensembles, but also a folk dance school or a ceremonial parade of all participants passing through the entire village. The three-day program as we know it today took place only from the 5th year.

Besides the stage, a new amphitheater was built in the 1970s, which was based on the architecture of original Liptov buildings. Gradually, a "horseshoe" for the presentation of folk art elements, dressing rooms, exhibition showcases, and a "spring" with washbasins for visitors were also added. The 28-meter-high Májka observation tower also joined, from which you will be offered an amazing view of the Tatry. The amphitheater acquired its current form with a covered stage in 2006. The first international participation at the festival was the Folklórna skupina Goralov (Podhale) originating from the Polish town of Nowy Targ.

A curiosity is the so-called Ornamentíky, which, at the initiative of ethnographer Jarmila Paličková and Viliam Gruska, were brought by more than 20 village folklore groups in 1974. Ornamentíky are embroidered standards that draw from regional traditions and state the name of the folklore collective or village they come from. At the jubilee 60th year of the Festival Východná, these ornamentíky were hung in the amphitheater. Currently, all folklore collectives have an ornamentík as their business card and present themselves with them at events at home and abroad.

The hike to Nové Štrbské pleso can be considered a gentle walk. If you arrive at the Štrbské Pleso railway station, after crossing the tracks of the rack railway, a path will lead you to the tarn. Before you know it, after approximately 5 minutes of walking, you are at the water. If you arrive by car, from the park-and-ride lot at Štrbské pleso, walk under the railway bridge directly to the tarn. From this side, it will take you 10 minutes on foot. Our hike begins in front of the railway station, which is the final stop of the Tatras electric railway and cog railway. Going up the stairs past Hotel Toliar, we find ourselves at Hotel Kempinski. We turn left and follow the asphalt road to a viewpoint from which we can already see our most visited Tatras lake from a distance. Water does not flow out of it anywhere, nor does any flow into it. It fills through underground springs from a depth of more than 12 meters. Thanks to its location, the surface of the lake is frozen for an average of 155 days a year. In 1925, the European Ice Hockey Championships were held on the frozen surface of the lake.

The dark blue crystal-clear water in the lake is home to many small aquatic animals and fish. The most numerous fish species found here include chub, northern pike, European perch, and roach. A notable feature is the presence of the vendace fish (Coregonus maraena / sih maréna). This is most likely the last place in the world where this fish still occurs. Fishermen from the Třeboňsko region (Czech Republic) brought the vendace here in 1929. Their current number can be counted on the fingers of two hands. Despite the efforts of locals for artificial breeding, this fish is doomed to extinction.

Our trip continues to another viewpoint, offering an unprecedented view of the Podtatranská kotlina basin and the Nízke Tatry mountains. We proceed along a slightly steep slope from which we can see Cesta slobody. From Hotel Solisko, we continue around the lake, and after a few meters, we turn onto a narrow peninsula where we find the monument to the Slovenské národné povstanie (Slovak National Uprising). Right before it, we can stop at the memorial dedicated to our poet Maša Haľamová. On the northeastern shore, we turn onto the path that leads to Hotel Patria. If we turn left, we reach Hotel Fis, from where we can see all the way to Vodopád Skok waterfall, located in Mlynická dolina. At the main intersection, we turn left onto a small path leading to Nové Štrbské pleso (1,315 m a.s.l.). We will return to our destination, Štrbské pleso, along the path leading along the northern shore of the lake. Batizovské vodopády are located in the Vysoké Tatry in the Poprad district. Although no tourist trail leads directly to them, you can enjoy them from a distance along the Tatranská magistrála. These charming waterfalls are an ornament of the Batizovská dolina and many a tourist enjoys them on their way to Batizovské pleso.

Batizovské vodopády lie at an altitude of 1,870 m a. s. l. The water spreads over the rocks in the dwarf pine growth and falls from a height of 20 meters. You can admire the waterfalls from the tourist trail, but do not go close to them. Be aware that walking outside the trails is prohibited in the Tatranský národný park.

Batizovské vodopády are of glacial origin and are formed by water from the Batizovský potok. About 50 meters above the waterfalls is the aforementioned Batizovské pleso. Set out for Batizovské vodopády via the red trail along the Tatranská magistrála from Popradské pleso towards Sliezsky dom. As an alternative route, you can reach them from the village of Vyšné Hágy along the yellow trail all the way to the Tatranská magistrála. You can also use the route from Tatranská Polianka.

On a track 1,052 m long, it transports up to 1,600 people per hour. Proof of this is that Queen Elizabeth also took a ride on the funicular to Hrebienok during her visit to the Vysoké Tatry.

Of course, the funicular ride is not the only reason why hundreds of enthusiastic tourists and nature lovers come to Hrebienok. This place is the starting point for several hiking trails. A very popular and easy walk leads from Hrebienok to Vodopády Studeného potoka, which you can comfortably manage even with smaller children. The round trip will take you about an hour. If you would like to extend your trip a bit, you can head from the waterfalls all the way to Tatranská Lomnica. The route Hrebienok – Vodopády Studeného potoka – Tatranská Lomnica will take you approximately two hours. More seasoned hikers can head from Hrebienok to Sliezsky dom, Téryho chata, or Zbojnícka chata. A very popular hiking trail leads from Hrebienok to Slavkovský štít, which you can complete, including the return journey, in under 8 hours.

After returning to Hrebienok, you can refresh yourself at the local Snack bar located right in the funicular building. Alternatively, relax in the pleasant bear zone. At Hrebienok, you will be welcomed by its patron, a large iron bear named Kubo. In the magnificent surroundings of Národný park Slovenský raj lies the Suchá Belá gorge, home to several waterfalls. One of the gurgling waterfalls, which turns into a breathtaking icefall in winter, is Okienkový vodopád. Although its 8 m height does not make it one of the largest, it is definitely worth seeing. The lower part of the waterfall consists of a beautiful small lake into which the cold, clear water of the Suchá Belá stream flows. When you get above the waterfall, you will discover the origin of its name. A rock window is located there. You reach it via a ladder, but be careful. The splashing water tends to wet it, making it quite slippery. During the walk through the 3.5 km long gorge, many other waterfalls and small lakes can be found along the course of the stream.

A trip to Suchá Belá is without a doubt worth making in spring. Nature is awakening, the snow is melting, and the waterfalls are gaining volume. In summer, escape here from the overheated city to cool off under the tree canopies; in autumn, you will be left in silent awe of all those beautiful colors. And winter is certainly great as well, magical icefalls bring sparkles especially to children's eyes as they search their surroundings for Olaf. After all, who wouldn't love warm hugs?

When you decide to visit Okienkový vodopád, your starting point will be Podlesok. From the parking lot, your steps will lead along the green hiking trail. After a section of approximately half a kilometer, you will find yourself at the beginning of the gorge. From there, you will continue through true wilderness. There is a small hydroelectric power plant in Kostoľany nad Hornádom, and you will need to carry your vessel over for approximately 100 meters because of it. This is also an opportunity for a short break and refreshments. Enjoying the trip along the river beneath the canopy of poplars is amazing. Watching fish and waterfowl will appeal to nature lovers. The Vodná nádrž Čierny Váh reservoir was built in the second half of the 20th century on the middle course of the Čierny Váh river. It was constructed for the purpose of pumping water for a power plant. The Čierny Váh power plant itself is not only our highest-located, but also our largest and most powerful hydroelectric power plant. The waterworks consists of an upper reservoir (circular) and a lower reservoir (elongated).

Let us imagine the first of them, the upper water reservoir, which is located in the territory of the Národný park Nízke Tatry. It is built on the Vysoké Sokoly karst plateau, near the village of Kráľova Lehota. Its construction took place in the years 1976–1979. The reservoir is situated at the top of a hill and has a water volume of 3.7 million cubic meters. Water is pumped into it from the lower reservoir, overcoming an elevation gain of more than 400 meters in the process.

The upper reservoir of Čierny Váh is considered one of the most beautiful places in the area, offering you a virtually fairytale view of the entire Horný Liptov region and the panorama of the Tatry mountains. You can reach it via one of the marked cycling routes or hiking trails. The most commonly used routes lead from Východná, through Svarín and Kráľova Lehota. Although an asphalt road leads to it, it is private with a strict prohibition of entry for motor vehicles.

For the public, entry to the upper reservoir site is prohibited. However, (for now) it is mostly tolerated by the power plant. When you set off toward it, a sign immediately catches your eye: "Water level fluctuations. Swimming in the reservoir is prohibited." Those who nevertheless make the trip all the way to the top will walk 1,660 meters during a circuit around the reservoir. The view of the water surface is truly calming. To some, the water on the black asphalt coating resembles pitch. The difference between the minimum and maximum water levels of the reservoir is 26 meters.

An interesting fact is that in order for water to be pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir, more energy is consumed than generated. Bizarre? Perhaps. But no one has come up with a better idea so far.

Approximately 1 kilometer from the water reservoir is the Lesnícky cintorín Čierny Váh forest cemetery. It includes the Kaplnka sv. Trojice chapel and a wooden bell tower. It is a publicly accessible attraction that was established in the territory of Kráľova Lehota in the first half of the 18th century.

The lake, covering an area of 2.241 ha with a depth of 4.5 m, is situated at an altitude of 1,663 m a.s.l., near the mountain hotel Sliezsky dom. Velické pleso was formed after the retreat of a glacier, leaving a smaller moraine above it. The lake was also visited by Pope John Paul II, who prayed on July 3, 1995, in a gazebo built specially on its shore.

It is possible to set off on a hike to Velické pleso from several starting points: Tatranská Polianka, Starý Smokovec, Popradské pleso, or Tatranské Zruby. Although the route to the lake is classified as moderately demanding, the reward is gorgeous nature. For those who do not like walking but prefer pedaling a bicycle, it is good news that Velické pleso is the highest point accessible by bike in the Tatras.

From Sliezsky dom, a green hiking trail leads past the tarn to Poľský hrebeň. From June to October, a popular tourist destination is also the 15 m high Velický vodopád waterfall. Situated in the valley above the tarn are also Kvetnicové pliesko, Vyšné Velické plieska, and Dlhé pleso. At the same time, Velická dolina is the usual starting point for the ascent of Gerlachovský štít, which is permitted only with a mountain guide.

An interesting feature of Popradské pleso is also Symbolický cintorín (the Symbolic Cemetery for the Victims of the High Tatras), located in a Swiss pine grove under Ostrva. Hrebienok is a tourist hub not only in winter, but also in summer. It serves as a starting point for hikes along the Tatranská magistrála trail, into Veľká studená dolina or Malá studená dolina. Almost directly at Hrebienok, you will find the well-known Bilíkova chata, and just a short distance further, Rainerova chata, Zamkovského chata, or Vodopády Studeného potoka. Pure natural beauty. Even if hiking boots are not your favorite footwear, you won't be bored at Hrebienok either. Here you will find snowtubing, a ride down a snow trough on an inflatable tube. In winter, the road serves as a toboggan track. You can rent a sled, take the funicular up, and thus avoid the grueling pull up the hill. Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will also find good conditions prepared here, although operations at Hrebienok are always uncertain. The more demanding slope from Hrebienok at the foot of Slavkovský štít opens only very sporadically. The slope leading down to Starý Smokovec occasionally struggles with a lack of snow. You will certainly have fun at Hrebienok, but if you love skiing, try checking the snow conditions and plan a backup strategy for a nearby ski resort in the area.
