Amfiteáter Východná

Amfiteáter Východná

Východná

You have certainly heard of the picturesque village of Východná in the Liptov region, which is famous for its annual Folklórny festival Východná. Did you know that this folk culture festival is the oldest nationwide festival in Slovakia with international participation? Prepare yourself for an exceptional cultural experience. Traditional folk dances and songs, excellent acoustics, the open sky above your head, and much more await you at Amfiteáter Východná.

On the first weekend of July, this extraordinary place fills with thousands of people, and the Nízke Tatry region comes alive with the traditions of our ancestors. From a distance, you will be welcomed by the 28 m high Májka observation tower, from which you can see all the way to the Tatry mountains. Every year, around 1,400 performers ensure a fantastic program. Evening concerts also have their own charm, creating a romantic atmosphere at sunset and making the performance experience even more powerful. In addition to music and dance, you can admire the architecture of the amphitheater, which is based on traditional Liptov structures. Large wooden sculptures are the works of woodcarvers from various corners of Slovakia.

An emotional story is connected to the creation of our most significant Slovak folk festival. In 1952, the Kriváň ethnographic troupe from Východná participated in the celebrations in Strážnice in Moravia. Their performance met with great success, and Kriváň won the "Darling of Strážnice" award. This experience thrilled the members of Kriváň so much that they decided to organize the Festival of Songs and Dances at home, in Východná. The first edition of the festival took place in 1953 on a temporary stage; however, just a year later, a wooden amphitheater was built as we know it today.

Folk creations, craftspeople, and local producers whose products you can purchase directly at the amphitheater are an indispensable part of the festival. Young people with an artistic soul will also find plenty to enjoy, as music, dance, and singing workshops are organized for them. Children will have fun creating in craft workshops. Anyone who feels like it can make a bowl or an animal on a potter's wheel, weave a whip, or try blueprinting.

Východná is a celebration of folklore that contributes to the preservation of our traditions. Come and experience an unforgettable event that will touch your heart. Book your accommodation near Amfiteáter Východná today! If you are toying with the idea of staying in the Liptov region longer, be sure to check out other attractions of Liptov. You can choose from a variety of small guesthouses and romantic cottages on our page accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš. We wish you a pleasant stay.

Ozubnicová železnica

Ozubnicová železnica

Štrba

The Ozubnicová železnica or if you prefer zubačka, is one of the most famous symbols of the Vysoké Tatry. An important means of transport, it also represents a very popular attraction. It runs on the Štrba – Štrbské Pleso route and back. Thus, it provides an ecological, low-emission, and, thanks to the recent reconstruction, also comfortable connection between the valley and the mountains. The final station at Štrbské Pleso is the highest-lying railway station in Slovakia. Modern trains with hybrid drive will thus take you directly to the starting point of your trips and hikes to discover the beauties of the Slovak high mountains.

Legendary zubačkas have been running on the cog railway line since 1970. The beginnings of operation are connected with the World Nordic Ski Championships, which were to take place right at Štrbské Pleso. Within two years, a 4.78 km long track was built and put into operation here. Operation was suspended in July 2020 due to extensive reconstruction. A complete replacement of the original track, its connection to the TEŽ line, and the replacement of vehicles were carried out. The original rolling stock was replaced by hybrid trains that can run both on the cog railway and on standard railway tracks. Operation was restarted in February 2022.

All the way to Štrbské Pleso, you will currently be carried by 5 new vehicles, named after lesser-known Tatra peaks. Bradavica, Kostolík, Stredohrot, Ganek, and Vysoká operate here. All units reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h and offer 91 seats. The advantage is barrier-free access, 2 wheelchair spaces in each train, a section for bicycles and baby strollers. The equipment of the vehicles also includes a modern safety, information, and camera system. Passenger comfort is enhanced by air conditioning, electrical sockets, and Wi-Fi internet access.

The zubačka will comfortably transport you to the greatest highlights and attractions of the Vysoké Tatry. From the tourist-beloved Štrbské Pleso, you can set off for a walk to the Štrbské pleso tarn, a hike to the sought-after Popradské pleso tarn, or to the impressive Skok waterfall. A unique adventure for young and old is offered by the Veveričí lanový park. In winter, the Tatry are a paradise for skiers and winter sports lovers. You can enjoy perfect skiing in the sought-after Park Snow Štrbské Pleso resort or enjoy plenty of snow fun in the local Fun Park.
