Mestská veža v Trenčíne
Mestská veža is a true gateway to Mierové námestie in Trenčín. In the past, it was part of the town's medieval fortifications and was originally called "Dolná brána" or "Turecká veža". Thanks to its appearance, it is the second most visited monument in the town, right after Trenčiansky hrad. Come and enjoy the magnificent views offered from a height of 32 meters.
The construction of the town fortifications began in 1412, when Trenčín, as a free royal town, received the right from King Sigismund of Luxembourg to build ramparts. Entry into the town was possible through two gates: the Upper Gate, which was demolished in the 18th century, and the Lower Gate, which, along with the fortification wall, has been preserved to this day.
Dolná veža originally had a square floor plan and two floors. Only later was it raised and strengthened by constructing a semicircular barbican with a smaller projecting bastion, which was entered via a drawbridge. The tower was gradually extended into an octagonal floor plan. In the past, a Renaissance clock mechanism was located at its top, which was replaced in 1934 by an electric tower clock. The original clock is still functional and can be viewed in Dom mestského kata.
Currently, the tower has six floors and a height of 32 meters. Access to the first observation deck, the balcony, is very simple and accessible even for mobility-impaired individuals, as an elevator takes you there. If you wish to look out from the tower itself, you must climb a few stairs. From here, you will be treated to a wonderful view of Trenčiansky hrad, Piaristický kostol, Synagóga, Farský kostol narodenia Panny Márie, and the surrounding area.
On the tower, you will find a Latin inscription that has survived to this day: "Unless the Lord guards the city, the guard stands watch in vain. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us." A sad event is linked to this inscription. In 1663, the guards received a delayed message from guards near Mníchova Lehota that the Turks were approaching. However, the citizens of Trenčín were certain they were safe, so they opened the gates so that people could go to the fields to work. Soon, however, a Turkish army of 5,000 men swarmed in. They bypassed the guards, who did not manage to close the gate in time, and laid waste to the town manor. Over 300 subjects lost their lives, and many were taken into captivity.
After the tour, you can smoothly move from the tower to the aforementioned Synagóga, which you can find right next to Fontána vodníka Valentína. If you traveled to Trenčín with your little ones, treat them to some fun and visit the Tarzania Trenčín rope park and Mestské kúpalisko Trenčín with them.
