Ľudové múzeum v Brezovici

Brezovica (okres Sabinov)

Ľudové múzeum in Brezovica is a reflection of the rich history of the village of Brezovica in the Sabinov district. The village, situated at the junction of the Levočské vrchy and Bachureň mountains, can boast living elements of folk architecture and traditional crafts to this day. The history of the life and work of the people in the village is presented precisely by a smaller museum housed in a former mansion. Through its interesting exhibition, it will guide you through the past century in the village.

Ľudové múzeum offers a tour of traditional farm tools, period interior furnishings, as well as old photographs. The most valuable one dates back to 1901. A particularly interesting part of the exhibition is the complete process of flax processing, canvas and rug production. An interesting exhibit is a steamer trunk as evidence of the emigration wave that took place at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The intention of the entire exhibition is to show today's modern people traditional farm life, customs, and traditions of the people in this village

An interesting fact is that the museum in Brezovica was established on the initiative of local activists. They managed to acquire the management of the former mansion, in which the exhibition currently resides. Period items and exhibits were donated to the museum by the villagers directly from their homes. The tour of the exhibition and the photo mini-gallery is free of charge. If you are interested in a journey into the history of this village, we recommend arranging a date in advance by phone or email.

Ľudové múzeum is proof of the respect of its founders and local residents for the life and heritage of their ancestors. You can combine the tour of the exhibition in winter with family skiing at the popular Dubovica – Žliabky resort, and in the summer season with refreshment, relaxation, and water fun at Aquapark Lipany. An original attraction called Lačnovská gravitačná anomália can then be found in the territory of the nearby village of Lipovce, on the way to the Zlá diera cave. The ball is said to roll uphill here. Is that really so? Come and see for yourself.

Hrad Plaveč

Hrad Plaveč

Plaveč

If you have ever driven around the Stará Ľubovňa district, the work in the village of Plaveč – Plavečský hrad certainly did not escape your attention. It spreads above the wide valley of the Poprad river. Its original function was reserved for defense, nowadays it serves rather as a place with magnificent views of the wide surroundings. Do you want to experience a pleasant picnic in an amazing atmosphere or go on a minor hike as a family? Then choose Hrad Plaveč as your trip destination.

The castle was built in the 13th century. Plavečský hrad was built by the nobleman Arnold, son of Ditrich from Spiš. Significant dynasties inhabited it, among them for example the Anjou or the Luxembourg family. In the 18th century, it lost its significance and was rebuilt into a residential mansion. Since the statics of the castle were disrupted, its owners moved to the manor house. It gradually began to decay, and a fire also engulfed it. Now, with the help of volunteers, it is being successfully reconstructed.

This luxurious mansion thus became the attraction of Plaveč, which many tourists visit every year. You can set out for the Deň Hradu Plaveč event, which takes place on the last Sunday of August, or alternatively for children's day during the first Saturday of June.

Access to the castle is very simple. You can start in the village of Plaveč and direct your steps to the Podzámok locality. You will recognize the castle already on the basis of its silhouette. The journey takes about 10 to 15 minutes on foot and even smaller children can manage it. So as not to tire them out too much, we recommend checking out accommodation near Hrad Plaveč. It is one of the ways to spend a nice time.

There are also many other places in the vicinity of the village that you can visit. Many clients of Ľubovnianske kúpele praise the surrounding nature. Do not miss amazing walks along trails or cycling routes. A tour of the slightly more distant Nestville park is also interesting. However, if you plan a wellness stay in the guest house Plaveč, you will certainly be more than satisfied. Slightly more privacy on the other hand is offered by chalets and cottages Plaveč. Of course, the choice of accommodation in Plaveč is entirely up to you.

Kamenický hrad

Kamenický hrad

Kamenica

You can find the ruins of Kamenický hrad in the Čergov mountain range. The castle hill rises above the village of Kamenica, located in the district of Sabinov. An educational trail with ten stops will reliably guide you through the most interesting places of this historical structure and its surroundings. In addition to the beautiful natural scenery surrounding the limestone castle cliff, you will also enjoy magical views of the panorama of the wider area. In good visibility, you can see as far as Ľubovniansky hrad, Hanigovský hrad, and Šarišský hrad from the top of the castle hill.

The construction of the castle above Kamenica took place at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The first written mention dates back to 1306, when the castle belonged to Rikolf Jr. According to documentary evidence, Rikolf built the castle at his own expense. The fortress's location near the Polish border suggests a military and defensive function in addition to a residential one. Throughout its history, the castle changed owners several times, but mostly belonged to the Traczay family. The year 1556 proved fatal for it, when it was conquered and began to fall into ruin. Currently, the preserved remnants are cared for by the civic association Kamenná veža. Among other things, it contributed to the construction of the educational trail, which was opened to visitors in 2009.

Of the monumental fortress, which ranked among the largest castles in Slovakia by area, you will currently find only minor original remnants on the castle hill. Thanks to the aforementioned civic association, the remediation of the remnants of the palace's northern wall was completed, and the mass of the tower and the northern bastion was stabilized. The castle complex is currently open to the public without restrictions. Access is relatively simple. A yellow hiking trail will bring you here directly from the village of Kamenica in about 30 minutes. From the village of Lúčka, you can reach the castle hill in approximately 45 minutes, and from the Potoky locality, also via the yellow route, in about 60 minutes.

Be sure to combine a trip to the remnants of Kamenického hrad with water relaxation and fun at Aquapark Lipany, a walk through the picturesque surroundings of Rožkovianske rybníky, or a visit to Miniskanzen drevených chrámov in the nearby village of Ľutina. There are many, many more tourist attractions and attractive trip destinations in this region. Book accommodation near Kamenického hrad and come see for yourself. You can choose from the selection of accommodation in Kamenica on our portal. Spišský hrad

Spišský hrad

Spišské Podhradie

There are few cases where natural richness marries cultural heritage so seamlessly. One of them can be found in Spiš, one of the most famous and most visited regions of Slovakia. And it is not just a Slovak, but a European uniqueness. Spišský hrad. One of the largest castles in all of Europe.

Thanks to its majesty, it is impossible to miss the castle. You will see it from afar, right from the highway. Lying below it is the small town of Spišské Podhradie, which is famous for its cathedral and priestly seminary. Spišský hrad castle is situated on a local travertine hill and, with an area of over 40,000 square meters, is one of the largest in all of Europe.

The entire castle rock is even a national natural monument. And the castle itself is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

The travertine mound on which the castle stands enjoys an excellent strategic position. It stands up to 200 meters above the surrounding terrain, with the final meters being almost vertical. In the past, the travertine cliffs posed a great obstacle to enemies. The hillfort was inhabited back in ancient times by early cultures, even in the era before Christ. The period from the tenth to the thirteenth century represented a period of great development for the castle. Due to attacks by the Tatars, there was an acute need for a defensive castle. The first structure to be built was a massive, majestic tower, which was destroyed by an earthquake. In the 13th century, its successor was built, a tower that stands to this day.

During this period, there was vibrant construction activity at the castle. Paradoxically, the castle progressed despite the devastating Mongol invasions in 1241. A century later, a further expansion of the castle took place. The courtyard, measuring 150 x 60 meters, was exceptionally spacious for its time. Over time, the lower massive courtyard, which gives the castle such a large area, began to become a burden. Maintaining guards and defending such a vast area was unnecessary. Therefore, as time went on, it began to be used almost exclusively for economic and utility purposes.

The castle was ruled by the most famous royal and noble families. Worth mentioning are the Thurzo, Zápoľský, and Csák families. Over time, the castle began to fall into disrepair, playing its final role during the uprising. Imperial troops were stationed here, later abandoning the castle. The nail in the castle's coffin was a fire in 1780. The castle then decayed, lasting until 1945. It had to wait a while longer for reconstruction. Rescue and restoration works on the castle only began in 1961.

A tour of the castle offers something interesting for everyone. The castle tower, torture chamber, exhibition of period weapons, or a walk through the lower courtyard offer a wide spectrum of things to see. It would be a shame to miss the surrounding attractions, such as Katedrála sv. Martina in Spišská Kapitula or historical Levoča.

You will find the most convenient accommodation with the best access to Spišský hrad castle in Spišské Podhradie or nearby Žehra, which boasts a small church also inscribed on the UNESCO list. Your choices will primarily consist of private accommodations, but you will also find affordable and pleasant guesthouses. Discover our European-renowned gems and set out to explore the secrets of Spiš.

Hanigovský hrad

Hanigovský hrad

Hanigovce

You can visit the remains of Hanigovský hrad above the village of Hanigovce, in the Sabinov district. The castle ruins, also known as Nový hrad, are located at the foot of Čergov, northeast of the town of Lipany. The castle rock reaches an altitude of 771 m above sea level, and you can reach it following the green hiking trail directly from the village of Hanigovce. A yellow hiking trail leads here from the neighboring village of Ľutina. It is an easy walk of approximately 2 km. Your path to the ruins will be made more pleasant by a wellspring with seating and beautiful views.

A wooden fort from the 13th century, built by the nobleman Mikčo, originally stood on the castle hill. In the middle of the 14th century, he asked King Louis I to rebuild the castle into a stone one. He justified his request by stating that the castle was located in the borderlands with Poland and Russia, and that the fortress would strengthen protection. The king granted the request, and a stone structure was built on the castle hill. After the extinction of Mikčo's family line, the castle changed owners several times. The last mention dates back to 1557, when the castle burned down. The Pečovský noble family, who owned it at the time, did not restore it again, and the structure gradually fell into decay to its present form.

The castle area originally had a rectangular floor plan enclosed by castle fortifications. The residential palace consisted of two floors. Access to the fortress led from the southern side and was secured by a watchtower. Emplacements for cannons were created in the fortifications, and the castle was also guarded by loopholes. Other structures in the courtyard were probably made of wood, as no remnants were left after the fire. The stone objects are still clearly identifiable on the castle hill today. The interior of the palace is covered with rubble up to the windows. A significant part of the fortification has also been preserved, reaching up to 3 meters in some places.

If you decide to take a trip to the castle ruins above the village of Hanigovce, be sure not to miss a visit to the Miniskanzen drevených chrámov or water relaxation at Aquapark Lipany in the surrounding area. You can enjoy a magical walk in the picturesque surroundings of Rožkovianske rybníky and beautiful views from the castle rock of Kamenický hrad. Miniskanzen drevených chrámov

Miniskanzen drevených chrámov

Ľutina

Miniskanzen drevených chrámov is a Slovak rarity built on the grounds of Bazilika minor in the village of Ľutina in the Sabinov district. The replicas of wooden churches, constructed at a 1:10 scale, rank among the gems of folk sacral architecture of eastern Slovakia. In 2011, the mini-open-air museum was opened and consecrated by the Archbishop of Prešov.

The construction of this unique project took place in several stages. Thanks to co-financing by the European Union within the Cross-Border Cooperation Program Poland – Slovakia (first and second stage) and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism (third stage), the exhibition was successfully expanded to include churches from Poland and Ukraine.

The first stage was carried out in the years 2011–2012 and brought 11 miniatures from the surroundings of Snina to the open-air museum. The scale models originate from the villages of Brežany, Hrabová Roztoka, Inovce, Jalová, Kalná Roztoka, Kožuchovce, Matysová, Ruská Bystrá, Ruský Potok, Topoľa, and Uličské Krivé.

The second stage was carried out in 2013 and brought another 10 specimens to the open-air museum, mainly from the surroundings of Bardejov. The scale models originate from the villages of Frička, Hutka, Jedlinka, Kožany, Krivé, Lukov-Venecia, Mikulášová, Tročany, Vyšná Polianka, and Zboj.

The third stage was carried out in the years 2015–2016. It brought further scale models to the open-air museum, this time from the villages of Bodružal, Dobroslava, Hunkovce, Korejovce, Krajné Čierno, Ladomirová, Miroľa, Nižný Komárnik, Potoky, Príkra, Šemetkovce, and Vyšný Komárnik. Scale models of Ukrainian churches were added from the villages of Jaseňa, Kanora, Lazečšina, Rekity, Svaľava, and Užok. The subsequent addition of 9 miniatures from the surroundings of Svidník (2015–2016) was funded by donations from organizations of Slovak compatriots and private donors from the USA.

During the tour of the miniatures, notice their arrangement in the nicely landscaped, fenced, and illuminated area. Each scale model has its own information board with a description and a brief history. Most of the scale models of Slovak churches date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Each of the presented churches is original and exceptional in some way. Their global value is even confirmed by the inclusion of eight churches from the Slovak part of the Carpathian Arc into the UNESCO List.

The village of Ľutina, where the mini-open-air museum is located, is a well-known and sought-after pilgrimage site. So do not hesitate any longer and plan a trip to its surroundings. You can find suitable accommodation on our pages accommodation in the Sabinov district.

Ľutinská hora

Ľutinská hora

Ľutina

You do not have to belong to a group of strongly devout Christians to visit the Ľutinská hora pilgrimage site. Crowds of tourists regularly flow into this location to honor the site of the apparition of Saint Nicholas, who appeared right here in 1851 to a poor girl, Zuzana Fekete. Ľutinská hora is a sought-after location for tourists behind the village of Ľutina, and the most visited pilgrimage of Greek Catholic believers in Slovakia takes place here every year.

Just 800 m from Ľutinská hora, visitors will find the Bazilika Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky. The beautiful grounds of this sacred building will enchant you with their charm. You will find a total of 4 chapels in it. The Kaplnka Zjavenia Sv. Mikuláša was built in 1930 on the site of a drinking water spring. It was right here that Saint Nicholas spoke to Zuzana Fekete and asked her to have a cross built next to the spring. Priests regularly bless the water from the spring during liturgical rites. The water reportedly has healing effects on various skin and eye problems and has already helped many people. With the help of an underground pipe, it is led from the spring location to the second chapel, Kaplnka Sv. Kríža, where you can draw it into your own containers.

The history of the Kaplnka Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky is also interesting. After the approval of the apparition of Saint Nicholas to Zuzana Fekete by a letter from the Bishop of Prešov, Jozef Gaganec, in 1853, local believers traveled through Vienna, Buda, Transylvania, and Subcarpathia to spread the news of the apparition of Saint Nicholas and collect funds for the construction of the chapel. Pilgrims from Hungary, Transylvania, and Galicia began arriving at the site, bringing stones from which the chapel and the retaining wall were subsequently built. It was completed in 1854. In 1878, both the Kaplnka Sv. Anny and the Kaplnka Sv. Kríža were completed.

On the grounds of this pilgrimage site, there is also the Dom Mikuláša Klimčáka, which serves for spiritual gatherings. At the same time, it houses a permanent exhibition of artworks by Slovak and foreign painters. The well-maintained Záhrada Sv. Bohorodičky also has a spiritual charm, where you can pray the rosary or simply take a walk and enjoy the beautiful views. When you are at this place, definitely do not miss the Miniskanzen drevených chrámov. You will find very interesting, mostly Greek Catholic wooden churches built on a 1:10 scale.

After the spiritual experience from this place, we recommend taking a moment to quiet down. If you feel like exploring the surroundings and are interested in other attractions, you can choose truly interesting places. Tourists will appreciate the opportunity to put on their hiking boots and embark on an easy hike to Hanigovský hrad. Several hiking trails lead to it. From its top, you can see the village of Hanigovce and its surroundings. In the summer season, you can fully enjoy water fun thanks to AQUApark Lipany. Anglers will be pleased with the opportunity to fish at Rožkovianske rybníky.

Slightly tired, but enriched with new experiences, you do not have to return home immediately. Feel free to stay here for a longer period. It is a good idea to book accommodation near Ľutinská hora in advance. From the wide range of accommodation facilities in Ľutina, we can recommend all of them. They are highly rated by clients who have already stayed with accommodation providers thanks to bookings through our portal. Are you already pondering cozy apartments or rather cottages and chalets?

Ľubovniansky hrad

Ľubovniansky hrad

Stará Ľubovňa

Few people would guess that northeastern Slovakia, bordering Poland, is a place where you can find interesting castles. Nevertheless, we have a trip idea for you in this area as well. If you set out to discover the beauties of Pieniny or the wild Dunajec, visit the town of Stará Ľubovňa. Above it towers the well-known Ľubovniansky hrad castle.

In the past, when Slovakia did not yet exist, trade was conducted between our homeland and the surrounding areas much like today. The Kingdom of Hungary (Uhorsko) and Poland were significant partners, and one of the most important trade routes of that time led beneath what is now Ľubovniansky hrad. It was created as a guard castle that ensured the defense and safety of the route. It was built around the year 1280 by the husband of the daughter of the Hungarian King Béla IV.

The castle initially went through a bumpy development. Its owners changed virtually one after another; it even happened that a certain family controlled it for only 4 years. Despite this instability, Ľubovniansky hrad made its mark on history in a big way. Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary agreed on peace, as the Kingdom of Hungary was interested in expanding its empire toward Dalmatia and Venetia. Battles with Poland were unnecessarily weakening it, so peace was the best way forward. Moreover, Poland lent money to the Kingdom of Hungary to conquer new territories, so it needed collateral. And so, in 1412, Ľubovniansky hrad, together with 16 other Spiš towns, ended up under Polish pledge.

The period under Polish rule lasted from 1412 until 1769. The castle was inhabited at the time by Polish mayors representing the pledged territory. For the castle, it was a significant benefit. During this time, the castle underwent its largest reconstructions, partly due to a castle fire in 1553. King Sigismund II Augustus ordered an extensive reconstruction into a Renaissance fortress. An interesting fact is that the most modern bastion, a defensive tower, was built at the castle at that time. For a certain period, the Polish coronation jewels were also kept at the castle.

Polish rule over the castle ended only in 1772 during the reign of Maria Theresa. The most significant noble family of the final period and at the same time the last owner of the castle was the Zamoyski family from 1883 to 1945.

What about the castle today? Part of the castle is in its original condition, part as a ruin. You certainly won't be bored here. In the preserved part, there is a museum where you will have the opportunity to see exhibitions of period furniture, weapons, or an exhibition room. Directly below the castle cliff lies another attraction, the Múzeum ľudovej architektúry open-air museum. You will thus see with your own eyes how not only the nobility lived, but also their subjects.

Stará Ľubovňa offers the widest accommodation options in the area. More demanding guests who enjoy pleasant hotels will find what they are looking for, as will those who prefer budget accommodation. Plenty of private stays, hostels, and cottages will convince you to visit Ľubovniansky hrad as well.

Bazilika sv. Jakuba v Levoči

Bazilika sv. Jakuba v Levoči

Levoča

Chrám svätého Jakuba in Levoča is among the most important sacral buildings in Slovakia. In 2015, Pope Francis elevated it to a basilica minor. Come and see the unique main altar of St. James, which, with its height of 18.6 meters, is the highest altar of its kind in the world. It is made of linden wood and was created under the hands of the woodcarver Master Paul of Levoča.

The parish church is dedicated to St. James, apostle and protector of warriors, pilgrims, and workers. His feast day is celebrated on July 25. The church has been serving believers for daily services for over 700 years. The church and its interior furnishings have been a national cultural monument since 1965. In 2009, the Basilica of St. James was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The church was built in the first half of the 14th century as a three-aisled building. Porches were built onto it on the northern and southern sides, and around 1515, the so-called Henckel Library was built above the northern porch. In 1859, at the instigation of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the neo-Gothic tower was completed.

In addition to the main altar, the church contains another 13 side altars. Another gem in the church is the organ, which was created in the years 1624 – 1630 at the expense of the wealthy Levoča burgher Friedrich Pobst by the Krakow organ builder Hans Hummel. The Renaissance pulpit, created by the local joiner master Krištof Kollmitz, originally from Olomouc in the Czech Republic, is also ranked among the remarkable monuments.

The dominant features of the church interior are extensive wall paintings representing the cycle of the seven works of mercy and the seven deadly sins. In addition to the main altar, the works of Ján Szilassy are also declared a national cultural monument. These are monstrances, chalices, and other liturgical objects decorated with enamel and embossed work, which are inlaid with Czech garnets.

A remarkable legend about a forged cross is also associated with the Basilica of St. James. When the former senator Wildner went on a trip with his wife and daughter, their carriage was struck by lightning and their only daughter Zuzana died. Out of grief, they lined her coffin with valuables and arranged a magnificent funeral for her. The gravedigger who buried her decided that he would dig up the grave that very night and take the jewelry from the grave. When he dug up the coffin, he stood face to face with a living girl. Out of gratitude to God for sparing their only daughter, the Wildner family had a forged cross placed on the roof above the main altar, where it remains to this day.

After visiting the basilica, you can set off for Mariánska hora, which is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Slovakia. Another holy church stands at this place, the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. On hot summer days, refreshment in the Bio bathing area will come in handy. Another great experience will be full-body relaxation in the unique Forest Sauna in Spišský Hrhov. The Spiš region will surprise you with a multitude of exceptional attractions that are worth not only seeing, but also experiencing. Book your stay in Levoča today. You can find a great offer of accommodation near the Basilica of St. James on our website accommodation in Levoča.

Fričovský kaštieľ

Fričovský kaštieľ

Fričovce

Surrounded by the picturesque nature of the Horný Šariš region, in the district of Prešov, in a quiet part of the village of Fričovce, you will find a true gem of Slovak Renaissance architecture. The beautiful Kaštieľ Fričovce manor house dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, when the construction of manor houses in Slovakia was at its peak. Its uniqueness lies primarily in its exterior sgraffito figurative decoration depicting around 150 historical and mythological figures. In addition to its beautiful architecture, the manor house attracts visitors with an excellent restaurant and an adjacent park with small ponds and historical trees.

This charming monument was built between 1623 and 1630 by the Berthóty family. The author of the figurative decoration is the painter and sgraffito artist Martin Waxman. He created the artwork on the building's facade using the two-color sgraffito technique, utilizing ivory and greyish-black charcoal. An interesting feature of the figures is their larger heads compared to their bodies. During creation, the author took into account the vertical perspective of the viewer looking up from below. In terms of content, you can admire up to 150 figures from various fields on the decoration. Here you will find ancient gods, figures symbolizing human virtues, figures from Hungarian and Polish history, kings, sultans, and emperors of the Roman Empire.

In 1998, the Tomko family became the owners of the manor house, breathing new life into the dilapidated building after more than 40 years. Extensive reconstruction included structural repairs, restoration of the exterior, interiors, outbuildings, and the park. The foundation of the greenery consists of deciduous trees reaching ages of 100 to 150 years. You can admire old linden trees, chestnuts, maples, as well as wingnut, mulberry, tulip tree, and ginkgo. Small ponds complete the beautiful scenery. In addition to touring the historical building and taking a walk through the picturesque park, you can also treat yourself to a delicious lunch or sit down for a fine coffee in the manor house. Directly inside the historical premises of the manor house, you will find a popular restaurant with a selection of culinary specialties of Slovak cuisine.

You can combine a tour of this beautiful manor house in Fričovce with an exciting adrenaline adventure: a ride in an armored personnel carrier. Would you like to step into the role of a soldier for a moment and explore the surrounding nature from aboard a tank? Or do you prefer a journey into history and making a trip to the ruins of Lipovský hrad castle?
