Dražovský kostolík

Dražovský kostolík

Drážovce

If you decide to visit the ancient city of Nitra, you will certainly find plenty of beautiful things and cultural monuments to visit and make your stay more enjoyable. Worth noting and visiting is Dražovský kostolík, which is a unique cultural and sacral monument of this region. You can find it in the village of Dražovce, which was a borough of Nitra until 1975. You can get here by car or by public transport. The village is a well-known archaeological site from the era of Slavic settlement. A settlement and a burial ground from the period of Great Moravia were located here. Archaeologists discovered over 400 graves with significant artifacts in this location.

You will see the church from afar. This simple structure proudly towers on the edge of a limestone cliff, which is a spur of the Tribeč mountain range. It is a landmark that cannot be overlooked. The church is the oldest sacral building of the Romanesque type in the territory of Slovakia. Its origin is dated back to the 12th century. It is officially named after Saint Michael the Archangel. Upon your arrival, you will be charmed not only by the structure itself, but also by the location where it stands and its unique atmosphere. The church has a rectangular floor plan. On the east side, there is an apse alcove in the shape of a semicircle. The roof is a simple gabled roof covered with tiles. On the west side towers a small turret with a pyramidal roof. The building is constructed of stone and brick. The nave of the church measures only 6.3 x 4.3 m. The entrance is from the side. The windows are small and set relatively high. It is assumed that another building, a hermitage, was attached to the church in the past.

The church is mostly closed. You can get inside only exceptionally if you request it in advance. The only exception occurs annually on September 29, when Michael celebrates his name day. At that time, Holy Mass is regularly held here. From the hill sought after by tourists, there is a wonderful view of the city of Nitra and surrounding villages. From here you will also see Nitriansky hrad. Did you know that the oldest part of the church contained mortar dating back to the 9th century? It is also written that the church was meant to fall victim to the construction of a railway line, for which stone was quarried from the hill on which it stands. Only protests by local residents saved it from demolition.

The church has caught the eye of many artists with its appearance. In addition to paintings, it appeared on postage stamps and coins. Not only documentary, but also feature films were shot here. Such famous Slovak music bands as Tublatanka also used the environment to shoot their music videos. Do you remember the 50 SKK banknote? Yes, this famous church is depicted on it as well. We believe that our story about this place has intrigued you so much that you will decide to find and explore it during your next visit to Nitra.

The nearby city of Nitra is popular not only with students, but also with visitors from all over Slovakia. During its tour, in addition to a spiritual experience, you can treat yourself to others as well. Feel free to lift your artistic spirit during a performance that you can choose from the repertoire of Staré divadlo Karola Spišáka v Nitre. Professional acting performances can also be enjoyed on the stage of Divadlo Andreja Bagara. You can also reach Svoradova jaskyňa cave along a hiking trail. On summer days when temperatures exceed 25 °C, you can cool off in the pool at Kúpalisko na Sihoti - Nitra.

Divadlo Andreja Bagara Nitra

Divadlo Andreja Bagara Nitra

Nitra

Among the significant personalities who contributed to the development of art is also the artist Andrej Bagar, after whom the theater in Nitra is named. Divadlo Andreja Bagara v Nitre belongs among one of the largest and most modern buildings in Slovakia, where you can watch amazing artistic performances of our professional actors.

The history of the theater began to be written back in 1833, when the first Nitra theater managed to welcome up to 360 visitors into its premises. The building of this theater stood here until a bomb strike destroyed it during World War II. However, even these wartime conditions did not prevent the spread of culture, and the theater artists moved into the premises of the TJ Sokol gym. The activities of the theater persisted here for more than 60 years. In 1979, the actors returned back to the Nitrianske krajové divadlo, which was named after Andrej Bagar.

The theater currently focuses mainly on drama, but its premises can be transformed for performances of opera, operetta, and ballet. It consists of two halls,  one with a capacity of 577 seats and the second, smaller one, which is an experimental studio for a 150-member audience. In the repertoire of this theater, you will find musicals in addition to drama plays. In the early evening hours, its large hall regularly fills up with people in beautiful gowns, craving an artistic experience and at the same time relaxation from the worries of everyday days.

The theater world is not only about acting, it is also about education. A library that operates directly on the premises of the theater serves these purposes. Students, amateur ensembles, as well as the general public can study dramatic texts and specialized literature here. This library is the only library in Slovakia specializing in theater and drama outside of Bratislava. It has more than 6,000 titles in its collection.

On the theater stage, you can also experience various performances of musical bodies, ensembles, broadcasts of television recordings, or shows. Festivals, which are also attended by visitors and theater artists from abroad, are popular formats as well. Among the most significant is the international theater festival Divadelná Nitra. A theater restaurant and a café, where you will find a diverse offer of food and drinks, are also available on the premises of the theater. Their services are also utilized when organizing formal receptions.

Enriched with new unforgettable experiences from the performance, you can head to your homes. In case of a longer stay, we can recommend accommodation near Divadlo Andreja Bagara. With fresh energy for the new day, you can also visit other interesting places in Nitra. You can learn stories about how our ancestors worked or how they raised animals at the Slovenské poľnohospodárske múzeum, part of which is also an interesting Skanzen. Beautifully decorated walls with various biblical motifs can be found at Nitriansky hrad. You can also clear your head with hiking on Zobor hill.

At the same time, it is also included in our list of national cultural monuments. Through the built educational trail, you will learn a lot of interesting information about it here, which will transport you to ancient times.

The origin of this unique fortification protecting the Zobor hill dates back to the late Bronze Age, namely to the period from the 10th to the 8th century BC. At that time, the peak of Zobor was an acropolis for people belonging to the higher social class. The strategic position of this hill ensured that later this place was used as a watchpoint. The main task of the hillfort, located on the high edge of the Carpathians above the Podunajská nížina, was the protection of the territory. Currently, you can admire with your own eyes the remains of an approximately 2 km long defensive rampart, the height of which reaches up to 7 m in places.

In order to make this attraction interesting for all age groups, people from the local civic association managed to create the Historický náučný chodník Hradisko Zobor. On its almost 2 km long route, you will learn interesting information about the pyramid on Zobor, the mentioned entrance gates, or the basin serving as a water cistern. The route is not very demanding, it leads along a marked trail with 8 information boards and will take you about 45 minutes. The total elevation gain of the route is 110 m.

From the hillfort, you have excellent access to the pyramid on the Zobor hill, where you can treat yourself to a picnic after this information-packed load. If you desire to relax in the water after a hike, feel free to stop by to refresh yourself in the pools of the Kúpaliska na Sihoti – Nitra on the way back. Kalvária Nitra

Kalvária Nitra

Nitra

Kalvária Nitra is located on a hill on the bank of the Nitra River in the southern part of the city. It is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. It is a frequent and popular spot for walks by locals as well as tourists who love coming here to enjoy the views. During major holidays, Christian pilgrimages are organized here.

Originally, a different calvary built in the last third of the 18th century stood on the site of the current one. It had seven stations and was replaced in 1885 (and subsequently consecrated in that same year) by the present calvary, which has fourteen stations. The original Kaplnka sv. Kríža chapel was converted into Kaplnka Božieho hrobu. While in the early years the calvary was outside the urban area, development gradually began to approach it in the 19th century until it surrounded it in the 20th century. At present, the calvary is very clearly visible from the city, and tourists often start out right from the center of Nitra to go and see it. Near the calvary is Lurdská jaskyňa, which also serves as a chapel.

Overall, the calvary consists of twelve Neo-Romanesque chapels depicting twelve stations of the Stations of the Cross. They are arranged along the path leading from Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie to Kaplnka Božieho hrobu. The latter is located at the top of the hill and represents the fourteenth station. In addition to the chapel of the final station, the Crucifixion statuary is also located at the top of the hill.

Since 1765, a small Renaissance monastery has stood at the top, originally built for the Spanish order of the Nazarenes. It gradually became a residence for retired priests and eventually an orphanage. Between 1878 and 1885, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style, and in 1925, an additional floor was added until it ultimately became the Mission House of the Mother of God.

Tourists also enjoy taking a trip to the Nitra calvary, mainly due to the great view it offers. The landmarks of Nitra, Šibeničný vrch, Zoborské vrchy, Tribeč, Pohronský Inovec, Vtáčnik, and Štiavnické vrchy are all right in the palm of their hand. That is what you call a perfect panoramic view. Children and seniors can easily handle the walk to the top of the calvary; it is a pleasant stroll along a grassy path.

Come and experience Nitra from a different perspective. Book accommodation near Kalvária Nitra and follow in the footsteps of the Stations of the Cross. The nice and simple craftsmanship of the chapels underlines the power of the story they tell. You can find inspiration for your stay on the page accommodation Nitra. Be sure to also visit other attractions in Nitra. They are truly interesting. Nitriansky hrad, Botanická záhrada Nitra, Nitrianska galéria, Svoradova jaskyňa, Dražovský kostolík, or Chránená krajinná oblasť Ponitrie are just a few of them. Where will you head first?

Kaštieľ v Nitrianskej Blatnici

Kaštieľ v Nitrianskej Blatnici

Nitrianska Blatnica

If you visit Nitrianska Blatnica, be sure to come and view the landmark of the village. The Renaissance manor house located in its northern part. If you have more time, we definitely recommend visiting this interesting attraction.

The village in which it is located has a rich history. It was made famous mainly by archaeological discoveries from the era of the Great Moravian Empire. The foundations of Kaštieľ v Nitrianskej Blatnici were created as early as 1569, when Ladislav Zeleméry built a curia here. In 1583, with the permission of King Rudolf, it was rebuilt into a fortified manor house with two fortified bastions, which was intended to serve as a refuge from Turkish raids. After later, mainly Renaissance and Baroque rebuilds, the manor house lost its fortress character and acquired the form of a luxurious manor residence.

After the Zeleméry family, several noble families became owners of the manor house. Let us mention at least the more prominent ones: the Dóczy, Esterházy, and Leonhardy families. It is precisely after the last owners that the manor house still bears its name today. After World War II, Leonhardovský kaštieľ served as a convalescent center for war veterans. Later, it also housed a school, a cinema, the municipal office, and the headquarters of an agricultural cooperative. Unfortunately, after 1989, gradual devastation of the manor house occurred. The current owner is gradually reconstructing it. In 2008, it received a new roof, and minor masonry work was also carried out. Despite this, the manor house is inaccessible to the public, and you can only admire it from the exterior. We believe that this national cultural monument will soon acquire a dignified appearance and will also serve the development of tourism.

In addition to the manor house, visitors can also view the extensive nearby park, which is designed in an English landscape style. It represents an undisturbed place for romantic walks and relaxation. Come and marvel at the beauty of ancient trees and draw peace and energy provided by a walk through the tangle of paths beneath their crowns.

Other interesting places are also located in the surroundings of the village. Perhaps the nearby Rotunda sv. Juraja will catch your attention with its appearance and history. Or will the view from Rozhľadňa na Marháte captivate you instead? We definitely recommend history lovers to visit the interesting Archeologické múzeum Veľkej Moravy v Bojnej. Ranč pod Babicou in Bojná with its adjacent pond will, in turn, appeal to those who enjoy good food and countryside life.

When planning your visit, do not forget to book accommodation near Kaštieľ v Nitrianskej Blatnici. You might be the ones to experience unforgettable moments in apartments Nitrianska Blatnica or take advantage of the hospitality and coziness of challets Nitrianska Blatnica. Come and enjoy the uniqueness of this beautiful corner of Slovakia with your family or friends. You will certainly not regret it.

Hlohovský zámok

Hlohovský zámok

Hlohovec

Kaštieľ v Hlohovci, also known as Hlohovský or Hlohovecký zámok, is the most significant historical monument of this beautiful town in the Trnavský kraj region. It stands south of Hlohovec, on the edge of a large tree park with French terraces. Its tour can also be called "history in a modern outfit." Welcome, step inside and soak in the atmosphere.

Originally, Hlohovský hrad stood on this site, built in the 11th century. The first written mention of the original medieval castle Hlohovec appears in the so-called Zobor Document from 1113. From 1275, the castle belonged to the Aba family, when the Hungarian King Ladislaus IV granted it to the first feudal lord, Aba the Great. The castle had several owners. It was owned by Matthew Cák, the Ujlaky family, in the 15th century it became the seat of the Hussites, between 1524 and 1636 it was in the hands of the Thurzo family, and from 1720 it belonged to the Erdődy family. It was the Erdődy family who rebuilt the original castle into a Baroque manor house and brought it to the form we know today. In 1945, Soviet troops entered the town, and Hlohovecký kaštieľ became a hospital for Soviet soldiers. For a certain period after their departure, a garrison of the Czecho-Slovak army was stationed in the chateau. Today, the chateau is owned by the town of Hlohovec, which protects and continuously improves its historical jewel.

A combination of modern and historical? No problem in Hlohovec.

That history is boring? A visit to Hlohovecký zámok will convince you otherwise. It offers an extraordinary experience in the form of experiencing history through virtual reality. You will sit in 180-degree swivel armchairs, put on 3D glasses, and find yourself in the distant past. You will see how noble families lived and spent their time and recreational whims. Using tablets with augmented reality, you can view the unrestored areas of the chateau, in direct contrast with stunning graphical visualizations of their original state. You will be accompanied through the 60-minute tour by professionally educated guides who will provide high-quality information and add spicy stories and intriguing tidbits.

A popular place for walks is the French terraced gardens in the chateau park. And not only for lovers. Legends circulate among the residents of Hlohovec about escape tunnels from the chateau. They are assumed to be true. Ground-penetrating radar surveys in the chateau garden indeed revealed local cavities at a depth of about four meters. These were supposed to lead from the battalion towards the greenhouses along the edge of the slope.

An unforgettable experience is visiting the chateau in the evening hours, when the chateau lights up in seven colors thanks to magnificent and grand illumination that changes color and intensity. Thanks to a modern elevator and barrier-free sanitary facilities, the manor house is also accessible to visitors with mobility impairments. There is also a souvenir sale, which will remind you of this wonderful Hlohovec gem for a long time to come.

Discover surrounding attractions thanks to accommodation in Hlohovec

In the immediate vicinity lies the unique Empírové divadlo, the only preserved noble theater in Central Europe. It was built by Count Jozef Erdődy in 1802 on the occasion of the visit of Emperor Francis II. The opening concert for the emperor was performed by Ludwig van Beethoven. His bust is located in front of the theater. A beautiful panorama of the town will be offered by the view from Vyhliadka Šianec, but during your stay, we certainly also recommend visiting the Hvezdáreň a planetárium M.R. Štefánika. Directly from the castle tour, you can also set off on a bicycle tour or go to the swimming pool; you have multiple options.

You can find accommodation near Hlohovecký zámok, for example, on our subpage accommodation Hlohovec. This place is perfect for spending a romantic weekend as well as a family stay. We wish you a pleasant cultural experience during your visit to the manor house, which, thanks to its appearance, could easily belong in a movie fairy tale.

Hvezdáreň a planetárium M.R. Štefánika Hlohovec

Hlohovec

Who wouldn't like the view of a night sky full of stars? You have certainly watched these glowing dots before and pointed your finger at Polaris or the Big Dipper constellation. Observing the night sky is one of the oldest activities in human history. In the past, people navigated by the stars and even used the starry sky as a calendar. If you are interested in astronomy, come to Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika v Hlohovci and look into the infinite universe through the second largest telescope in Slovakia.

The history of astrology itself is as old as humanity. Observing the stars and mapping them led people to tell various stories, which were often connected with supernatural beings. Only later did they begin to write down and compare the results of their observations, which led to the construction of observatories. Institutions where scientists observe, study, and analyze natural phenomena.

The desire for knowledge also stands behind the creation of this observatory. Several enthusiasts from the pharmaceutical plant at the time decided to establish an Astronomy Club under the Works Club ROH at Slovakofarma. The initial impulse was a sale of old, high-quality military optics for cheap. However, they arrived too late for that, and the equipment was already sold out. Nevertheless, this changed nothing in their decision, and on February 10, 1954, the history of astronomy in Hlohovec began to be written.

The mission of the club was to organize popular-science lectures and pass on knowledge about the universe to the youth. It was also tasked with carrying out professional astronomical observations and establishing a public observatory. The grand opening of Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika took place on November 29, 1958. Alongside the observatories in Prešov, Levice, and Humenné, it thus became the fourth scientific research institute for astronomical observations in Slovakia established after World War II.

The observatory provides several programs for schools, kindergartens, and the general public, including observations, lectures, seminars, and screenings of various professional and educational documentary films. The hall with a capacity of 56 seats houses a high-quality Zeiss ZKP-2 planetarium, which allows projecting an artificial sky, the Sun and the solar system, the Moon, planets, and stars, as well as the Milky Way.

In addition, the observatory engages in observations and regularly publishes its findings in professional literature. Observational activities for both the public and scientific purposes are provided by the observation and research department. Do not forget to arrange your visit to this interesting place in advance by phone.

After an engaging excursion, visit Hlohovský zámok and walk through the magnificent French terraced gardens in the chateau park. From the castle, head to Kúpalisko Hlohovec, which will guarantee you true summer refreshment. The surroundings of Hlohovec offer many great attractions that are worth seeing and visiting. If you like the idea of an actively spent vacation, do not wait and book accommodation near Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika right now. You will certainly choose from our wide range of accommodation in Hlohovec.
