Where to go on a trip Štós

Kúpele Štós

Kúpele Štós

Štós

Kúpele Štós is a climatic spa located in the village of the same name. It lies at an altitude of 650 m above sea level in southeastern Slovakia, in the Košice Region. A high number of sunny days ensures intense solar infrared and ultraviolet radiation, which aids healing. The spa is situated in picturesque nature full of conifers that release their healing essential oils into the air. On the border of Slovenský kras and Volovské vrchy, which form part of Spišsko-gemerský kras / Spišské rudohorie, spruce and fir forests predominate. Thanks to a climate classification with a stimulation degree of 1 (Swiss classification), it is ideal for fulfilling its purpose, namely the treatment of respiratory diseases. In addition to this indication, metabolic and endocrine disorders, oncological diseases, mental disorders, and occupational diseases are treated here.

Historically, the origin of Kúpele Štós is linked to traditional mining, which flourished in this area from the 14th century. Mining also supported the establishment of new manufacturing factories and the influx of foreign workers. It was the master cutler Róbert Komporday, who worked for the SANDRIK company, who promoted the effects of hydrotherapy. Upon his initiative, the construction of the spa began in 1882. As early as 1883, the first spa season was launched.

The boom of Kúpele Štós occurred during the tenure of Dr. Dezider Czirfusz, after 1888. During the winter season, he served in San Remo as an Austro-Hungarian consul and attracted a large clientele to Štós. For this reason, additional facilities were gradually built: Vila Mária, Vila Hungaria, Vila dr. Czirfusza, and Vila Tatra, followed by a dance hall and other buildings. The year 1963 was also significant for Kúpele Štós. For therapeutic purposes, the first classic Finnish sauna in the entire territory of then-Czechoslovakia was put into operation here, and thanks to reconstruction, it continues to serve guests to this day.

Kúpele Štós has been visited by many prominent figures. Mention can be made of Eduard Beneš, Emo Bohúň, Ivan Olbracht, Karel Hašler, Vlado Clementis, Beata Poničanová, Mac Frič, and Karel Konrád. Laco Novomeský composed the poem "Pod jedľou" here, Jaroslav Ježek performed concerts here, and Vojtech Löffler sculpted his statues here.

The spa has a long-standing tradition in speleotherapy. This is a truly unique treatment with excellent results that takes place in the nearby Jasovská jaskyňa. This natural inhalatorium helps build up body resistance. The vital water world, which is part of a stay at the spa, is a popular form of relaxation. Visitors can enjoy a complete complex of water and steam baths. Staying in one of the saunas has a beneficial effect, with choices including Finnish, herbal, and eucalyptus saunas. Other indoor attractions include vital rain, a water path, a tepidarium, and a hydromassage pool. Guests can swim in a classic modern swimming pool as well as in a relaxation pool with a counter-current, water spout, and massage jets.

Other procedures that visitors and patients can undergo at the spa include massages. The offer includes classic, reflex, sports, aromatherapy, and lymphatic drainage massages. Water procedures include steam baths, classic bubble baths, additive bubble baths with a dry wrap, whirlpool baths with a dry wrap, Scottish douches, and a Finnish sauna. Peat wraps and paraffin applications are also popular treatments. Rehabilitation, fitness training, and spinal traction are part of the therapy as well. Electrotherapy, applied through various procedures at the spa, has proven excellent effects. These include Bioptron light therapy, diadynamic currents, interference currents, shortwave and ultrashortwave diathermy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound, and Solux lamp treatment. Gas injections and various medical and laboratory examinations, including ECG and spirometry, are a matter of course.

A stay in the local forest park, which covers an area of 4.5 ha, has a beneficial effect on the soul. It is designated as a national cultural monument. A small stream with several cascades and a fountain flows through it. There are more than 200 different plants and exotic trees, many of which are rare. Visitors can sit by a sequoia or a Canadian maple, or admire azaleas and rhododendrons. Children will not be bored either, as the Macík children's playroom is built here for them. While the children play, parents can sit in the common room. Visitors also often spend their leisure time at the spa in the café and fitness center.

The surroundings of Kúpele Štós are rich in historic and natural monuments, so you certainly will not be bored after completing your medical treatments. Hrad Krásna Hôrka castle and Kaštieľ Betliar manor house will enchant you with their atmosphere. Nature lovers will enjoy Zádielska tiesňava gorge, as well as visits to Krásnohorská jaskyňa cave and Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa cave. You will have the entire Národný park Slovenský kras right at your fingertips. Be sure to plan a trip to Hvezdáreň a planetárium Medzev, visit the technical monument Hámor v Medzeve along the way, and it is also worth visiting Vodný mlyn v Kováčovej and Hájske vodopády. There is no boredom in winter either, as the Štós – Šikmá stráň resort offers its slopes.

Hámor v Medzeve

Medzev

Since time immemorial, the inhabitants of Medzev, a small town located in the Košice-okolie district, made their living not only from agriculture and mining, but also from metal processing in hammer mills (hámre). One such workshop, in which a heavy water-driven hammer processed iron, copper, and tin, was situated directly in the town center. Hámor v Medzeve with its complete technical equipment has been preserved to this day as a living technical monument. It introduces visitors to the historical technology of tool making by forging using a water hammer. Seeing this unique mechanism at work is a fascinating experience not only for science and technology enthusiasts.

A hammer mill is a historical workshop designed for metal processing using the energy of running water. Water power drives blacksmith forging hammers, blowers, or bellows to blow air into furnaces. A hammer mill is considered a pioneering mechanism and the first seed of manufactories for producing forged products. The building of Hámor v Medzeve is a combination of stone and wood. It dates back to the second half of the 19th century and is currently managed by the Slovenské technické múzeum. Technologically, it is a single-hammer two-hearth mill. In addition to the historical technology of metal processing, it introduces visitors to the ingenuity and skill of Medzev blacksmiths.

In the interior of the historical building, also called Tischlerov hámor or Mestský hámor, the technical museum has prepared a unique exhibition of small-scale ironwork production for visitors. Through hammer mill equipment, tools, and products, it illustrates the picture of the work of old blacksmiths in hammer mills. Hámor v Medzeve, along with its technical equipment, was declared a national cultural monument. The interior is accessible to the public during limited hours or upon request. Before visiting, we recommend verifying the possibility of entry by phone.

Medzev

Who wouldn't know the town of Medzev located in the valley of the Bodva River on the northern edge of the Slovenský kras and on the southwestern edge of the Volovské vrchy? This small town, founded by German colonists in 1241, conceals many interesting things. One of them is Hvezdáreň a planetárium Medzev.

The town of Medzev became famous for the fact that former Slovak president Rudolf Schuster spent his childhood here, later also building the Múzeum kinematografie rodiny Schusterovcov alongside the Slovenské technické múzeum. Right opposite this museum on Štóska ulica street, Hvezdáreň a planetárium Medzev invites you into the bowels of an inconspicuous burgher house with a playful colored sign above the gate.

The history of this entity dates back to the 1970s, when an astronomy cabinet was founded in the town. It has been based in its current building with a built-in dome since 1997. The observatory is under the founding jurisdiction of the Centrum kultúry Košického kraja. It has two permanent staff members and as many as six workplaces. It organizes numerous events focused on competitions about stars, literary competitions, and photographic competitions. Families with children and astronomy enthusiasts can also find something to their liking here.

The observatory offers a rich program of events for its visitors. These mainly include presentations, lectures, programs for families with children, professional astronomical exhibitions, commentaries in the planetarium and planetary park, as well as open physics and natural science classes. You can observe the sky from the observatory dome only in case of favorable weather, but at any time you will be engaged by creative astronomical workshops or an exhibition titled "Hlavolamy, vedecká hračka, pokusy a experimenty". If you are lucky, you can view thematic exhibitions focused on anniversaries and significant astronomical events or exhibitions of works of art by non-professional authors from Medzev and its surroundings. Upon request, the observatory also features mobile outreach events in its program with observation telescopes for schools or various cultural and social events.

Husitský kostolík v Lúčke

Husitský kostolík v Lúčke

Lúčka (okres Rožňava)

The village of Lúčka in the Rožňava district lies in the valley of the Čremošná stream. It is known for hosting the annual Christmas wafer baking event. Or also for the fact that in such a small village, home to only 180 residents, there are as many as 3 churches. During a visit to the village, you can drop by Rímskokatolícky kostol sv. Jána or a simple single-nave reformed church. However, the most sought-after by tourists is Husitský kostol narodenia Panny Márie. Does it seem strange to you as well that the Hussites would name a church this way? Today's name has a bit of a historical background.

The Hussite church was built on a hill above the village at the beginning of the 13th century. Today a ruin, the medieval church was built in the Gothic style using laid stone. The building has a rectangular floor plan. It is single-nave, originally without a tower. The presbytery has a rectangular termination, the sacristy is built on the northern side, and a projecting vestibule is located on the western side. The church received its current name due to being occupied by the Bratríci (Brethren). These armies under the command of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs included a large number of Hussite warriors. During this period, the church was fortified with a stone protective wall, and a tower was added to it. Unfortunately, the church burned down during World War I. Instead, local residents built a new church directly in the village in 1926. Since then, the old church was gradually dismantled, and its parts were used as building material. World War II finished off the work of destruction.

Since 1978, archaeological research has taken place at the site. Since then, the masonry has been successfully restored and preserved. Unfortunately, the remaining fragments of the church's fresco decoration could not be saved. However, the watchtower next to the church was successfully restored and roofed. Today, the area of the Hussite church is used for organizing various cultural events. It is covered with a well-maintained lawn, and you can hide from the scorching sun under the crown of an old pear tree. The stone walls with remnants of sandstone portals complete a unique atmosphere, which, along with beautiful views of the surrounding nature, you too can enjoy to your heart's content if you visit this interesting place.

You can also walk to other interesting places in the surroundings. Popular technical monuments include Vodný mlyn v Kováčovej. You can enjoy a walk if you head to Hrhovský vodopád. The once famous Andrássy family used to live in this region. That is also why you can visit, for example, Mauzóleum Andrássyovcov or Andrássyho obrazáreň. You can regenerate your body with a massage or other procedure if you visit Kúpele Štós. Cyclists and hikers will be pleased with the marked trails leading through Národný park Slovenský kras.

In case you stay here for a longer time, we recommend booking accommodation near Husitský kostolík v Lúčke. The offer in this village includes various cabins and cottages, but you can also choose from cozy apartments Lúčka. Couples in love often choose private accommodation in Lúčka as their haven for the night. We will gladly help you select the highest quality accommodation.

Socha anjela v Háji

Socha anjela v Háji

Háj (okres Košice-okolie)

Are you a fan of the movie Behind Enemy Lines? In that case, you will certainly be pleased to know that one of the heroes of this successful war drama remained in Slovakia after filming. No, it wasn't Owen Wilson. American filmmakers left us with a monumental angel with a broken wing, which was part of both the opening and closing scenes. The movie hero, a 15 m tall Socha anjela v Háji, towers over the cemetery in the village of Háj, located in the Košice-okolie district. It represents a major attraction not only for movie lovers, but also for tourists with a passion for original attractions and curiosities.

The plot of the American action movie Behind Enemy Lines takes place in Bosnia. However, few people know that the scenes of this audience-favorite war drama were filmed in the picturesque surroundings of Slovenský kras. The creators therefore donated the impressive statue specifically to the village of Háj, lying in the valley of the national park that provided the backdrop for the famous movie scenes. The majestic angel stands on the grounds of the local cemetery next to the church. The surroundings are nicely maintained, perfect for a pleasant walk.

An interesting feature is that the impressively looking statue is not actually made of stone. It is merely an imitation consisting of polystyrene hardened on the surface with cement. The angel has one wing shot off, and bullet marks are visible on it. The fragile material easily succumb to the influence of weather conditions and requires regular maintenance. It is taken care of by the village, which has also installed an information board at the site.

Be sure to combine a trip to the statue with a famous past with a walk to the jewel of Slovenský kras, the beautiful Hájske vodopády waterfalls. In the vicinity of the village, do not miss a tour of the ruins of Turniansky hrad, a trip to the unique Rastlinný kostol church, or to Hrhovský vodopád. This region is literally woven with tourist attractions and natural beauty. Book accommodation near Socha anjela v Háji and come see it with your own eyes. Accommodation in Háj and the surrounding area offers a wide range of cottages and chalets, as well as popular guesthouses and apartments. Premonštrátsky kláštor

Premonštrátsky kláštor

Jasov

In the small village of Jasov, which administratively belongs to the Košice – okolie district, you will find a wonderful historical monument visited every year by a huge number of pilgrims and tourists. Premonštrátsky kláštor (Premonstratensian Monastery) is the largest Late Baroque building in Slovakia. Its history began back in 1228. Did you know that its premises house one of the most valuable libraries in Slovakia, containing approximately eighty thousand book volumes?

The sacred complex, dominated by Chrám sv. Jána Krstiteľa, together with the monastery garden, belongs among the most valuable monuments of historical and spiritual significance in Slovakia. Two symmetrically positioned monastery buildings stand on square footprints, between which is the structure of a single-nave church with two towers. Both wings of the monastery enclose courtyards with cloister gardens. The monastery has a symbolic 365 windows, matching the number of days in a year, 12 chimneys, symbolizing the twelve months, and 4 entrance gates, expressing the four seasons.

Among the most valuable parts of the interior of Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa is a collection of seven altars located along its perimeter. All the altarpieces came from the hands of the famous Austrian painter Johann Lucas Kracker. The main altar is dedicated to the patron saint of the church, and the altarpiece depicts the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The ceilings of the sanctuary are decorated with beautiful frescoes featuring scenes from the Bible. The largest painting in terms of dimensions fills the third vaulted bay. Its subject, Preaching in the Desert, depicts the preaching activities of Saint John.

The valuable library is located in the northern extended part of the church. Today, its library collection consists of a summary of theological, natural science, philosophical, geographical, historical, and fiction books written mainly in Latin, Hungarian, and German. Part of the original collection is located in Slovenská národná galéria, Matica slovenská, and Slovenské technické múzeum.

The monastery also includes an extensive monastery garden, which is one of Slovakia's unique features. In the past, it served as a place for meditation. From a historical perspective, since 1802, Opátstvo Rádu Premonštrátov has been the only living abbey of old religious orders in Slovakia. The Premonstratensians have lived in Jasov for almost 850 years. In 1970, the monastery complex was declared a national cultural monument.

Currently, Holy Masses are regularly celebrated in Chrám sv. Jána Krstiteľa, and in the summer season, during set hours, you can also take a guided tour. During the off-season, it is necessary to arrange your visit in advance by phone. The Premonstratensian Order is currently working on opening the historical library to the public. After the tour, you can take a pleasant walk to the ruins of Jasovský hrad castle and to Jasovská jaskyňa cave, which is the oldest accessible cave in Slovakia.

After a day spent exploring Slovenský kras, relax in a cozy apartment. Just one click on the page accommodation in Jasov will display the full range of accommodation near Premonštrátsky kláštor. Over the following days, take a trip to the historical center of Košice and get to know the attractions hidden in the capital of Eastern Slovakia.

Hrad Krásna Hôrka

Hrad Krásna Hôrka

Krásnohorské Podhradie

Hrad Krásna Hôrka is one of the few preserved castles in Slovakia. Despite the damage caused by the fire, it represents a classic castle that looks exactly as it did centuries ago. Move with us to the times of kings and legendary princes. Visit this fairytale castle. You will find it just a few kilometers from the town of Rožňava, located a short distance from the state border with Hungary. It towers above the village named Krásnohorské Podhradie, creating a well-known backdrop.

Slovenské Rudohorie, the area located near the castle, has been an important mining region since time immemorial. The earth hides many riches that needed to be transported to the markets. Hrad Krásna Hôrka was established as a defensive castle protecting this important trade route. It stands on a raised hill that also provided refuge to King Bela IV from the Tatar raids.

The origins of the castle itself date back to the 13th century. Initially, it consisted of only one defensive tower, a residential palace, and a fortification. The Bebek family, who ruled the castle, feared Turkish attacks. Thus, they strengthened the castle's defensive system and undertook an extensive reconstruction. Later, Turkish troops occupied the Bebek castle in Fiľakovo. It was occupied with the consent of the imperial troops, which demanded retaliation from the Bebek family. František Bebek began attacking the emperor's troops as well as the residences of his nobles. His actions did not go unanswered; he went into exile and his son into prison due to an uprising against the emperor, causing the family line to die out.

Hrad Krásna Hôrka came into imperial hands and was ruled by royal captains. They did not help the castle much until Peter Andrássy came to power. His family ruled for many years. He started an extensive reconstruction, and by a deed of donation in 1642, the castle was given into the ownership of the Andrássy family. Krásna Hôrka became a grand representative seat. The Andrássy family also owned the nearby Betliar manor house and participated in the enhancement of both monuments. In 1857, the castle became their family museum. They had the decisive say at the castle until 1945, from when the castle became state property.

Many castles suffered disaster in the form of fire. Krásna Hôrka avoided this calamity for a long time. That was until 2012, when a fire destroyed the shingle roof, bell tower, and part of the exposition. You don't have to worry, approximately 90% of the exhibits remained undamaged, and the castle is undergoing reconstruction that will restore it to its former appearance.

Accommodation in the area can be found in nearby villages, such as Krásnohorské Podhradie, Krásnohorská Dlhá Lúka, or in nearby Rožňava. We offer a variety of guesthouses of all levels, from cozy family-run ones to more luxurious ones. Of course, you can also choose one of the hotels or private accommodations, of which there are more than enough. We have something for everyone, and under the ramparts of magnificent Krásna Hôrka, you will find affordable accommodation that will allow you to spend an unforgettable stay here.

Krásnohorská jaskyňa

Krásnohorská jaskyňa

Krásnohorská Dlhá Lúka

The lesser-known Krásnohorská jaskyňa cave is located in Národný park Slovenský kras, near the village of Krásnohorská Dlhá Lúka. Entry to the cave must be arranged in advance, as it is always accompanied by experienced cavers. The minimum number of participants is 4 people, and due to the difficulty of the tour, it is not recommended for small children.

Krásnohorská jaskyňa boasts a unique rarity. It is home to the largest dripstone in the temperate climate zone, standing at an impressive height of 34 meters. This is also why the cave was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. During your tour, you will feel like real cavers, as the conditions closely resemble those experienced by speleologists when discovering underground spaces.

Before the tour begins, you will receive complete caving gear, and off you go to explore. A pleasant temperature of around 9 °C awaits you, and up to 4 species of bats will properly welcome you to the underground kingdom. Your adrenaline will rise as you scramble through rubble, traverse an underground stream, and wade through its shallower parts.

It is not worth visiting Slovenský kras for just one day. We therefore recommend staying near Krásnohorská jaskyňa or finding accommodation in Rožňava and planning further trips in Rožňava and its surroundings. Gelnický hrad

Gelnický hrad

Gelnica

If you enjoy going on trips into nature, head up to the cliff behind the town of Gelnica and discover the remains of Gelnický hrad castle. The history of this once grand residence dates back to 1234. In ancient times, it was also known as Thurzov hrad castle. Take a pleasant walk with your family and enjoy quality time spent together in nature. A marked hiking trail leading from the Banícke múzeum museum will guide you to the remains of this medieval fortress.

You will find the ruins of the castle in a place called „zámčisko“. The purpose of constructing the castle was to protect the town and its mines. Since its establishment, it went through many hands. During times of unrest and continuous battles for the Hungarian throne between Ferdinand I of Habsburg and John Zápolya, the castle was destroyed. Following Zápolya's defeat, Ferdinand I gifted Gelnický hrad castle to the nobleman Alexej Thurzo, who had it rebuilt and expanded.

The Thurzo family owned the castle until 1636, when its last male descendant, Michal Thurzo, passed away. For a short time, the castle became state property. In 1638, King Ferdinand III granted it to Count Štefan Csáky and his wife Eva Forgách. During the reign of the Csáky family, several uprisings broke out, during which the castle and the town changed hands repeatedly. The castle began to fall into disrepair, and from 1765 onwards, it served merely as a training ground for the hussars of Gelnica.

The final destruction was brought about by the town itself when it ordered the stone from the walls to be used for the construction of the town hall and adjacent buildings. It is assumed that the castle had four bastions and a main entrance on the eastern side. In addition to the main entrance, there were three other courtyards at the castle. The most well-preserved section is the torso of the castle tower with a window opening and a loophole.

During an archaeological survey in 1963, it was discovered that 14 underground tunnels lead out into the surroundings of the castle. Various artifacts were also found, such as keys, weapons, spurs, and other items. The castle ruins are freely accessible all year round. From the castle hill, you will enjoy a wonderful view over the entire town. If you head to the castle in autumn, your children will certainly be delighted by the chestnuts they find under the trees in the chestnut alley.

After visiting „zámčisko“, set off for Turzovské jazero lake and enjoy a great picnic on its shores. On your travels, you can also stop by the Banícke múzeum, which will introduce you to the history of mining in the area. In the surroundings of Gelnica, there are many fantastic attractions worth visiting. Don't wait and book your weekend stay in the Slovenské rudohorie mountains today. Hvezdáreň Rožňava

Hvezdáreň Rožňava

Rožňava

Since time immemorial, people have been fascinated by stars and unexpected phenomena in the night sky. They watched supernova explosions, fixed their gaze on glowing stars, or sought to learn everything about distant, unexplored planets. Are you one of those people as well? Catch a glimpse into the secrets of the universe thanks to observations at Hvezdáreň v Rožňave. Weather permitting, these take place every Thursday.

From approximately the 15th century, people attempted to journey after the mysteries of the universe. In the town of Rožňava, however, people managed to peek into space only several centuries later. The first observatory was built on the southern slope of the calvary on Lesná ulica street in 1966, when the plot of land of the current observatory was handed over to an astronomy club to build an observation station. Since 1969, the local observatory became an independent institution named Ľudová hvezdáreň Uránia. Gradually, technical achievements were purchased for the observatory's equipment, such as a Newton-type telescope with dimensions of 280/2250, a radiotelescope, a weather station, or a refractor.

Hvezdáreň v Rožňave consists of a dome, a meteorological station, a rain gauge, an observation station with a sliding roof, a sliding observation station, a sundial, a solar furnace, and an all-sky camera. Its equipment also includes various types of telescopes, thanks to which all celestial bodies in the sky can be observed. Since 2009, the observatory has been entrusted to the property management of the Gemerské osvetové stredisko (GOS). Its activities were integrated into the organizational structure of GOS, and an astronomy section was created, which primarily fulfills tasks in the fields of popular education, professional research, observation, and advisory activities.

During Thursday evenings, the Rožňava observatory organizes popular evening sky observations for its visitors. These take place after dark only in case of favorable weather. As part of an evening excursion during a group visit, you can arrange a lecture on a pre-selected topic. On sunny days, thanks to a portable chromospheric telescope or telescopes with a solar filter or projection in the observatory dome, you can see all the way to the Sun, thousands of kilometers away. The observatory is a sought-after location for students, teachers, and the general public. Within its portfolio, it is possible to book a professional lecture on a pre-stated topic and thus learn more about this infinite cosmic space. Observatory staff also carry out outreach observations in schools and preschool facilities. The observatory's activities also include organizing the progressive knowledge competition "Čo vieš o hviezdach" (What Do You Know About Stars?) and art competitions "Vesmír očami detí" (The Universe Through Children's Eyes) and "Astrofilm". Extracurricular activities include uniting astronomy enthusiasts in the Astroklub affiliated with the observatory.

The observatory strives to appeal to every visitor. However, if you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, visit other attractions in Rožňava. The Gemer region is famous for its mining activity. You will learn about the history of mining during a visit to the historical exhibition of the Banícke múzeum. A somewhat more interesting experience will be offered to you by Banícke múzeum Rožňava. On its premises, you can ride a mining train or view two rare technical uniques, a Škoda Sentinel steam truck and an Aveling & Porter steam roller. On summer days, when the temperature exceeds 25 °C, it is worth heading to the pools at Kúpalisko Rožňava to cool off your sun-heated bodies. After all, swimming is great for every age category. Ending the day can be with a glass of wine at your pre-booked accommodation or in a tent near Brzotínsky rybník.

We believe that, also thanks to our accommodation near Hvezdáreň v Rožňave, you will be able to enjoy a great stay of any kind. Whether you come for a business trip or to relax here during the summer with your family, on our portal you can find accommodation that will meet all your requirements. Will you choose apartments in Rožňava or a room in a hotel? The decision is entirely yours.

Directly on the shore stood a spa house, which currently provides accommodation and catering services.

The water in Turzovskom jazere is clean and clear, reaching up to 17 meters at its deepest point. During hot summer days, you can swim in it, but only at your own risk. Prírodná rezervácia Červené skaly

Prírodná rezervácia Červené skaly

Poráč

Červené skaly is a locality in the territory of the Spišská Nová Ves district in the Košice Region, which has been declared a national nature reserve. It falls under the state nature conservation of the Slovenský raj. The reserve extends into the cadastral areas of the villages of Poráč, Olcnava, and Slovinky. The most beautiful part of the first-mentioned village's territory is precisely the Poráčska dolina, where you will also find a canyon up to 300 meters deep in places, featuring Červená skala. Despite its name, the latter is rather white from a distance. Červené skaly form the wall of the canyon of the Poráčsky potok, which is also the subject of protection. The canyon with a semi-karst character cuts through the Galmuská planina. This locality with rock, meadow, and forest communities is a typical representative of the biogeocenosis of the Slovenské rudohorie. It has an area of 390.5 ha and was declared a protected area back in 1981.

Protect nature, walk only on marked trails

The bedrock of the Poráčska dolina is formed predominantly by limestone, which, with the help of the Poráčsky jarok, enabled the formation of canyon-like valleys and numerous karst phenomena such as turrets, rock windows, waterfalls, and caves. Rising above the Poráčska dolina is the triple peak Slovinská skala. Due to the ruggedness of the relief, there are two areas in this territory that differ in their flora. In the north of the valley, beeches and thermophilic flowers mainly occur. In the southern part, fir-beech forests, spruce forests grow, and besides thermophilic vegetation, cold-loving mountain plants appear in the shadows. Dealpine pine bushes thrive on the rock ridges, and alder forests thrive in the floodplains of the Poráčsky potok. Among the protected species, one can find the Carpathian bellflower, the Moldavian monkshood, the alpine clematis, or the Slovak pasque flower. In the forests and meadows, red deer, roe deer, wild boar, lynx, fox, and especially in recent years, the wolf find their home.

The national natural monument Červené skaly is protected by the 5th and 4th levels of protection, therefore the territory can be visited only within marked hiking trails, cycling and cross-country skiing routes, and economic activity is prohibited here. The canyon of the Poráčsky potok is best accessible from the villages of Slovinky and Poráč. A foot crossing from one village to the other through the Poráčska dolina takes approximately two and a half hours and is an undemanding hike with an elevation gain of 319 m.

Make the most of your time spent in Červené skaly

In the vicinity of the nature reserve, there are many natural attractions such as the Šarkanova diera cave. For those who will have a taste for a bit of history after a walk in nature, the Markušovský hrad in Markušovce or the Banský skanzen in the village of Hnilčík are nearby. It is also not far to Spišská Nová Ves, which offers a zoological garden, or to Spišské Podhradie, where besides the Spišský hrad, there is also St. Martin's Cathedral (Katedrála sv. Martina).

Book your accommodation near the Červené skaly nature reserve and get to know this area more closely. You will be closest to the rocks if you stay in one of the cottages in Poráč. If these facilities are occupied, try browsing the offer of apartments in Spišské Vlachy or other accommodation in Jamník. A bit further away, in Spišské Podhradie, you will also find other quality accommodation options. Just choose a date and you can start looking forward to a wonderful trip.

Národný park Slovenský kras

Národný park Slovenský kras

Brzotín

Národný park Slovenský kras extends over the southwestern part of our country, along the border with Hungary. It reaches into the districts of Rožňava and Košice-okolie, with a portion of its buffer zone extending into the Revúca district as well. Its area covers 34,611.08 ha, while the buffer zone comprises 11,741.57 ha. The territory of the national park is formed by a system of karst plateaus, river canyons, gorges, and a multitude of surface and underground karst phenomena. Slovenský kras is the most extensive plateau-type karst area in all of Central Europe. 78% of its area is covered by forests.

Slovenský kras was declared a Protected Landscape Area on August 31, 1973. On March 1, 1977, the area became the first in Slovakia to be inscribed into the international network of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves under the Man and the Biosphere Programme. The area officially became a national park on February 13, 2002. Currently, more than 1,350 caves and chasms are known, which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Probably the most significant cave is the unique Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa. The territory is renowned for the diversity of its natural conditions. These allow for the occurrence of animal and plant species representing mountain, forest-steppe, and steppe habitats.

Climate of the national park and its “Highlights”

The climate in Národný park Slovenský kras is mild. The area falls within the moderately humid and moderately warm climate zone, while higher elevations fall into the moderately cool climate region. The average temperature in January ranges from -4 to -6 °C, whereas in July it climbs to between 19 and 20 °C. Snow cover blankets the territory from 50 to 115 days, reaching an average maximum height of 45 cm. Annual precipitation is not particularly high, reaching between 630 and 990 mm. Water seeps into underground cavities, subsequently creating so-called karst springs (vyvieračky, e.g., Brzotínska, Ardovská, Kečovská, and others). In the national park, you will encounter two waterfalls (Hrhovský, Hájske) and several smaller water reservoirs. These include various ponds, such as Jasovské rybníky or Hrušovské rybníky.

Národný park Slovenský kras boasts several "bests". The highest point sits at an altitude of 925 m above sea level on the peak of Matesova skala. The lowest point is located at an altitude of 217 m above sea level at the foot of Plešivská planina. The longest and simultaneously deepest cave is the cave system of Skalistý potok (length 8,123 m, elevation difference 373 m, vertical range 376 m). The oldest nature reserve dates back to 1925 (Jasovská jaskyňa). The lowest-lying classic ice cave (Silická jaskyňa) is located at an altitude of 503 m above sea level. The smallest nature reserve covers an area of 1.22 ha (Pod Fabiankou), while the largest (Brzotínske skaly) covers an area of 433.78 ha.

Slovenský kras has a diverse representation of flora and fauna

Národný park Slovenský kras features flora represented by various regions. Plants, together with their communities, belong among the most impressive components of the local nature. The influence of both Carpathian and Pannonian flora is clearly visible here, creating a mosaic-like vegetation pattern. In fact, all species of rumenica (Onosma) occurring in our country grow here. Given the altitudinal range of Slovenský kras, 3 vegetation tiers are distinctly defined, planar, colline, and submontane. Currently, chudôbka drsnoplodá Klášterského (Draba lasiocarpa subsp. klasterskyi) is considered an endemic species of the national park. It replaced rumenica turnianska (Onosma tornensis), which until recently was regarded as a local endemic. Other endemics of the territory include, for example, šafran spišský (Spiš crocus), poniklec prostredný (middle pasqueflower), or peniažtek slovenský (Slovak penny-cress). Calciphytes and xerothermic species have the largest representation. Their main feature is high adaptability to the environment; they survive in conditions of drought as well as extreme frosts. Up to 1,500 taxa of higher plants occur in Národný park Slovenský kras, but other "bests" are also tied to it. You will find here the largest area covered with kandík psí (dog's-tooth violet) and the lowest altitude where astra alpínska (alpine aster) occurs.

The fauna of Národný park Slovenský kras is equally diverse. The territory is home to all our carnivores, a wealth of invertebrates, and almost all species of bats. Avifauna (birds), herpetofauna (reptiles), and batrachofauna (amphibians) are also richly represented. Thanks to suitable living conditions in caves and underground spaces, spiders and mollusks occur alongside bats. A bat census takes place annually during their hibernation in cave systems. During that period, 24 species represented by more than 50,000 individuals live here. However, the fauna of the steppe and forest-steppe zones is particularly typical of this area. Interesting animals of the national park include sága stepná (predatory bush-cricket), krátkonôžka štíhla (snake-eyed skink), jašterica zelená (European green lizard), užovka stromová (Aesculapian snake), syseľ pasienkový (European ground squirrel), sova dlhochvostá (Ural owl), and ďateľ čierny (black woodpecker). The fauna of Slovenský kras also has its "bests". The largest hibernating colony of bats lives in the national park, our largest bird of prey (golden eagle) as well as our smallest feathered creature (firecrest) nest here, and our largest mammal (brown bear) has its den here.

Great place for walks, hiking, and rock climbing

The national park comprises 6 nature reserves, 10 national nature reserves, and 16 national natural monuments (mainly caves). Each of these locations is exceptional in a different way and stands out with a unique asset that attracts tourists. Tourists can visit them year-round. It is possible to plan easy walks as well as multi-day treks. It is all down to considering your own abilities, strength, and options. In summer, hiking, cycling, and rock climbing are typical in the national park. In winter, meeting cross-country skiers is nothing unusual. As for the mentioned rock climbing, year-round climbing is permitted only in the locations Stienka za chatou, Stienka nad potokom (from the creek side as well as from the Masív Zadného komína wall), and Májová Veža. In other locations, due to a high level of nature protection, seasonal closures apply from February 1 to July 31. The main rock climbing center in Slovenský kras is NPR Zádielska tiesňava.

Among other opportunities offered by Národný park Slovenský kras are agritourism, fishing, and horseback riding. A perfect trip awaits you to Turniansky hrad, Štítnik, or Plešivec, which are castle ruins. It is also very lovely near Zádielske hradisko, Hrad Krásna Hôrka, or Kaštieľ Betliar. On our website, you will find an offer of accommodation in the vicinity of Národný park Slovenský kras, thanks to which you will be truly close to the local attractions. After that, your only task is to pack your backpack, put on your walking shoes, and set out to explore its beauty.
