Ski Strelníky

Ski Strelníky

Strelníky

Slovakia is a country that turns into a snowy fairytale in winter. You will find a wide variety of ski resorts, towns, and villages here that come alive especially in the winter season. Several of them are located in Central Slovakia, a region characteristic for its excellent snow conditions.

The surroundings of Banská Bystrica are significant for winter sports, particularly for cross-country skiers. Dozens of kilometers of trails in beautiful surroundings are available to them. However, traditional downhill skiers will not miss out either. One of the ski resorts where their steps should definitely lead is Strelníky.

The village of Strelníky lies less than 30 km east of Banská Bystrica. It is a mountain village whose center sits at an altitude of 660 meters above sea level. Thanks to this altitude and, above all, its location in the middle of the mountains, locals enjoy a generous snowfall every year. And that pleases skiers in the local ski resort in particular.

Ski Strelníky is an ideal option for all unpretentious skiers looking for a peaceful and family-friendly ski trip. You will not find crowds of tourists here, you will not have to push through anywhere, and the slopes will belong purely to you. An enticing prospect, isn't it?

The Strelníky ski resort offers its visitors two ski lifts. The shorter one is used mainly by children, while the longer one, measuring exactly 600 meters, is suitable for more demanding skiers. The resort's slopes are spread over meadows above the village below the Vtáčnik peak. The altitude of the resort ranges from 700 to 750 meters above sea level. Thanks to its gentle elevation change, this resort is particularly suited for beginners.

You will not find artificial snowmaking here, meaning you will always enjoy skiing on 100% natural snow. A total of four slopes are available to skiers. Three of them are marked in blue and are intended for beginners. More advanced skiers will appreciate the medium-difficulty slope marked in red. With a length of 500 meters, it is the second longest in the resort, while the longest slope is another 200 meters longer. These are ideal distances for skiers who like to ski down the entire slope in one go. The total length of all slopes in the resort is 1,900 meters.

In the vicinity of the Strelníky ski resort, you will also find an ungroomed cross-country trail. A nearby free parking lot is a matter of course, and a ski and snowboard equipment rental service operates here as well. After a rewarding day of skiing, you can either grab a quick bite at the local snack bar or opt for delicacies from a traditional koliba serving Slovak cuisine.

The village of Strelníky is not among the most famous, yet it offers many leisure opportunities. In winter, it makes for great skiing, and if you want to enjoy it for more than just a single day, you will need accommodation. Directly in the village, you will primarily find many private guesthouses and homestays. In the immediate surroundings, you can also secure accommodation in higher-standard pensions. As a result, you will have no trouble finding lodging that suits you perfectly. All you need to do is come and see for yourself.

Within the scope of the Náučný banský chodník educational trail, there are 18 adits in which copper and iron ore were mined in the past. Some of them are still full of interesting minerals. Among the rarest is the beautiful blue-green langite, which is considered a global unique feature. Nowhere else does it occur in such a quantity as right in Ľubietová.

Ľubietová copper was exported to the world under the Lebentzer brand in the past. Its mining ended approximately in 1912. In the part of the village called Podlipa, a huge dump field formed by 18 adits remained after copper mining. Today, the houses are inhabited by residents of Ľubietová or weekend cottage owners.

Kúpele Brusno

Kúpele Brusno

Brusno

Kúpele Brusno is among the popular Slovak spas. It lies northeast of the city of Banská Bystrica, in the Slovenské rudohorie mountain range. The Brusnianska valley, in which the spa is located, is also called the valley of Peklo (Hell). Not because of hellfire, but because of the tributary of the Peklo river, which flows into the Brusnianka stream. Fresh air, a peaceful environment, and beautiful surrounding nature are perfect for a spa stay in this location.

Brusnianske kúpele dates its history back to the beginning of the 19th century when the first spa house began to be built. However, the springs of healing mineral water were likely used much earlier by local lumberjacks and charcoal burners. Kúpele Brusno experienced its greatest boom under the ownership of Ľudovíi Rosenauer, who invested considerable money into drilling for a warm spring. Although he did not succeed in drilling a spring, Hungarian officials and merchants flocked here for recreation during his management.

With the collapse of Austria-Hungary, Brusnianske kúpele lost its Hungarian clientele, but it established itself well in the new Czecho-Slovak state. Due to the similar chemical composition of the mineral water, it was nicknamed the "Slovak Karlovy Vary." It was not until the construction of the Liečebný dom Poľana, funded by investors from Kúpele Sliač, that the operation of the spa began in 1985 as we know it today.

Brusnianka mineral water is used for spa treatment. Here we can find seven springs, four of which, Ondrej, Ludvig, Paula, and Ďumbier, are used for drinking cures, and the Ondrej spring is also used for preparing mineral-carbonated baths. All springs have a similar composition, bicarbonate and calcium-magnesium.

You have certainly heard of Brusnianka mineral water. It is bottled right here at Kúpele Brusno and comes from the Ondrej spring. It is also referred to as "kyselka" (acidulous mineral water). This mineral water has healing properties and helps with cardiovascular diseases, stomach problems, digestive tract disorders, as well as musculoskeletal disorders.

Kúpele Brusno also focuses on diseases caused by metabolic and endocrine disorders, as well as the widespread disease, diabetes. Likewise, a doctor may refer you here for the treatment of certain occupational diseases. Treatment procedures include balneotherapy, mineral and pool baths, massages, saunas, and wraps. You can also make use of gas injections or oxygen therapy treatment with oxygen. No less important in the treatment process is group, individual, or fitness exercise.

The spa park in Brusno is perfect for rest and relaxation for seniors. In addition, cultural events, musical performances, and dance evenings are regularly held in the spa house. Whether you are looking for a romantic stay or arriving with a group of friends, you will enjoy walking, cycling, or hiking. All this is offered by the beautiful region of Horehronie. From Kúpele Brusno, you can also admire the peaks of the Nízke Tatry. If you decide to spend your holiday here, we have a few tips for trips around Brusno.

Families with children will certainly enjoy trips on the Čiernohronská železnica, a visit to Bystrianska jaskyňa, or Hrad Slovenská Ľupča. For those seeking an active holiday in Horehronie, we recommend canoeing down the Hron river or a trip to Dobročský prales, which will amaze you with its mystery.

Everyone can truly indulge in a relaxing stay in Brusno. On our portal, you will find accommodation near Kúpele Brusno or accommodation in Slovenské rudohorie. Hrad Dúbravica

Hrad Dúbravica

Dúbravica

The ruins of Hrad Dúbravica are situated directly in the center of the village of the same name, not far from the local church. The small foothill village of Dúbravica lies in the Banská Bystrica district, in the Severné Podpoľanie region. The ruins, which in the past were probably a chateau or a smaller castle and upon which the tooth of time has already left its unmistakable signature, will catch visitors' attention at first glance. Many even stop, letting themselves be lured by its stone walls and the atmosphere of times long past.

The preserved castle walls were once a representative chateau built in Dúbravica by the Croatian family of Dúbravickí. The history of the site is shrouded in a veil of mystery. The Late Gothic structure dates back to the 15th century. Its newer extension on the northern side was completed two centuries later. The castle belonged to the Dúbravický family until approximately the 18th century. Since that period, its owners have been unknown. In the immediate vicinity of the castle, a mill and several farm buildings were built in subsequent centuries.

Despite the fact that the castle is in ruins today and, with the exception of the younger part, does not have preserved roof structures, its walls catch the eye of every visitor to the village. The castle occupies a dominant position here on a gentle rocky elevation in the center of the small village. The tourist attraction is thus easily accessible to a wide spectrum of tourists, from families with small children and history lovers to seniors who are deterred from visiting historical monuments by hiking trails. It is located right by the main road in the village, approximately 50 m past the church, near which you can park comfortably.

You can combine a trip to Dúbravica with a visit to the nearby village of Čerín, famous for its mineral spring. This spring wells up right at the entrance to the village. Here, you can draw your favorite medium-mineralized water, sit in a gazebo, and fully enjoy the charm of the surrounding nature. Will you let yourself be invited to a trip to the castle ruins with pleasant refreshment by the mineral spring? If you also visit the district town of Banská Bystrica, be sure not to miss an inspection of the night sky during an excursion to the local Hvezdáreň observatory after walking through the square. Book accommodation near Hrad Dúbravica today. Accommodation in Dúbravica and its surroundings is primarily a wide selection of cottages and chalets, as well as pleasant apartments that are guaranteed to fulfill your holiday expectations.

Ľupčiansky hrad

Ľupčiansky hrad

Slovenská Ľupča

Our country is full of many castles. Famous ones, lesser-known ones, and those that are completely unknown. For many, Ľupčiansky hrad is certainly quite unknown as well. Despite the fact that it lies only a few kilometers from Banská Bystrica, not many tourists know about it. In general, the southern side of the Nízke Tatry mountains is overlooked. Try to change that, set off to Slovenská Ľupča, and you will see that you will not regret it.

A wooden hillfort originally stood on the site of the present castle. In 1241, the Tatars invaded our territory and conquered the old wooden castles. The stone ones resisted their attack. The builders of Ľupčiansky hrad were inspired by this and built a modern stone castle in 1250.

The castle had a significant defensive position and protected access roads to well-known mining towns. The most famous are certainly Banská Bystrica and Banská Štiavnica. An interesting fact is that the castle was damaged by an unconventional natural element. Fires were common at that time, but the castle in Slovenská Ľupča was damaged by something else, an earthquake. This struck the region in 1443 and severely damaged the castle above the Hron river itself. The repairs were followed by several reconstructions, the most significant of which was carried out by Pavol Rubigall, who started it in 1572.

After this period, the castle experienced exceptionally frequent changes of its owners. It was regularly conquered, plundered, and constantly ruled by someone else. From 1707, an Austrian military garrison as well as a prison were located here. From the second half of the 19th century, the significance of the castle declined. It was engulfed by fire and served other purposes. There was an orphanage, a school, a reformatory for juveniles, or a vocational school. However, the castle is a national cultural monument and is in a well-preserved state. It hides several surprises, one of which is an escape tunnel from the bottom of the castle well, which is more than 60 meters deep. Another unique feature is the linden tree growing in the lower courtyard. Locals call it Korvínova lipa, and its age is probably 700 years, making it one of the oldest linden trees in Central Europe.

At present, also thanks to an extensive reconstruction, the castle is in exceptionally good condition. In the 1990s, it was managed by the Regional Monuments Board, and since 2002, it has been owned by Železiarne Podbrezová. Thanks to this unconventional owner, the castle got a second chance. Significant reconstruction work took place, and the castle was made accessible to the public.

Slovenská Ľupča has several attractions in its vicinity. You can relax in the Kúpele Brusno spa and glimpse into recent history at the Múzeum SNP in Banská Bystrica. You will discover a rich mining past, all in the attractive environment of the Horehronie region. A pleasant extra bonus is quiet and cozy accommodation, whether in guesthouses or in private stays. This form has recently been extremely popular thanks to the comfort and peace it provides. Come and try it out in Slovenská Ľupča.

Pamätník Nemecká

Pamätník Nemecká

Nemecká

In modern Slovak history, there are very few chapters as dark as the one written in the year 1945. One of the saddest events at the end of World War II took place in the village of Nemecká in central Slovakia. It is right here that a memorial stands today, dedicated to the victims who died at the hands of the German commando and the Hlinka Guard. The cultural monument is located near the main road from Banská Bystrica to Brezno. In addition to the Pamätník Nemecká itself, an exhibition entitled Represálie nacistov a príslušníkov POHG na Slovensku v rokoch 1944-1945 is prepared for visitors. Here, you can see not only the uniforms of members of the Hlinka Guard, but also the personal belongings of the victims who laid down their lives here.

In the village of Nemecká, on the premises of a former lime kiln, tragic events took place in January 1945 that have no equal in the modern history of Slovakia. The lime kiln situated on the border between the territories of the villages of Ráztoka and Nemecká became a silent witness to the murder of direct participants in the SNP, their family members, supporters of the uprising, and persons persecuted for racial reasons. The victims were shot here and subsequently burned in the flames of the stone furnace. More than 900 people lost their lives here during a single week in January.

Today, the Pamätník Nemecká, also referred to as the Pamätník umučeným, stands at this blood-stained site. The cultural monument belongs to the Múzeum SNP. The first part of the exhibition provides a general introduction, the course of the tragic event, and introduces visitors to its main actors and, last but not least, the victims of the murder.

The second part of the exhibition is located in a separate room. Its goal is a detailed presentation of the reprisals in western, central, and eastern Slovakia. One of its sections is dedicated to attempts to exterminate the Roma population. Among the most interesting items representing these tragic events are parts of uniforms of the POHG, the German police, and the Arrow Cross Party. An especially emotional part of the presentation is the personal items of the victims of extermination and belongings from burned houses in the villages of Kalište and Kľak.

The lime kiln in Nemecká proved to be a strategic site in 1945. The victims were burned here, and their ashes, along with remaining body fragments, were swallowed by the waters of the Hron river. The furnace stands here to this day as a silent witness of the tragedy and a figurative warning finger. Next to the lime kiln, a monument symbolizing the flame of the furnace and a kneeling woman was built for the victims of the reprisals.

If you visit the village of Nemecká during your wanderings through Horehronie, you certainly will not miss the Pamätník umučeným. The gloomier thoughts that might run through your mind after touring this place can be dispelled by the picturesque nature of central Slovakia. Accept an invitation to the nearby village of Predajná and take a walk to the magnificent Predajnianske vodopády, or let your mind unwind in the mysterious underground of Bystrianska jaskyňa. And when the cultural heritage and natural wealth of this region completely charm you, find accommodation near the Pamätník Nemecká. Cottages and cabins in Horehronie practically invite you to relax surrounded by picturesque nature.

Kostol sv. Martina

Kostol sv. Martina

Čerín

Visit the peaceful village in the district of Banská Bystrica, the village of Čerín. Right here you will find one of the most valuable monuments in the surroundings of Banská Bystrica, namely Kostol sv. Martina. Upon visiting this Early Gothic church, you will be transported in time and place, experiencing for a moment the atmosphere of medieval England.

This artistic and historical gem is located on an elevated spot above the village of Čerín. Its history dates back to the 14th century when it was built by Pavol of Krtíš. In the church's exterior, you can view amazing medieval wall paintings or other works of art. Why visit this particular church? Definitely to see with your own eyes the impressive 17th-century wooden bell tower built next to the church. The church as such is fortified with a stone defensive wall featuring loop-holes. This was mainly because the Turks attempted to conquer the village.

Originally built in the Gothic style, the church was rebuilt three times during its journey to the present day. Its Gothic architecture has been preserved in many places to this day. Intrigued, you might find it interesting that the church was painted just a few years after its construction. For that era, this was a very unusual phenomenon, as decoration usually took place only half a century after construction. The 16th-century wooden painted ceiling will captivate you so much that you will remain in silent awe for a moment.

We do not need to remind you of its high artistic and historical value. Several years ago, 12 heritage-protected objects were listed within the church interior. It is well worth looking around at the main altar of St. Martin (crafted in the workshop of the Master of Kremnica), statues of saints, the Late Baroque empora, the 18th-century pulpit, or the wooden benches from the Renaissance period. You will also surely notice the Gothic baptismal font or the baptismal font from the Baroque period. The eye of an enthusiast will also appreciate the hanging painting of St. John of Nepomuk. There is truly a lot to admire in the church. However, it will be even better if you attend an announced mass and share a spiritual experience together with other believers.

Even though the church was struck by artillery during World War II, many paintings and frescoes were successfully saved. So be sure to plan a trip to this attraction and enjoy perhaps nearby accommodation near Kostol sv. Martina. From there, after morning mass, you can also head to the ruins of Hrad Dúbravica. Nearby is also Hronsek, home to a wooden articular church as well as other attractions of Hronsek. For a larger group, simply choose a suitable cottage in Čerín and treat yourself to a wonderful summer holiday exploring historical monuments in Slovakia.

Predajnianske vodopády

Predajnianske vodopády

Predajná

The Predajnianske vodopády are located in the cadastral area of the village of Predajná in the Brezniansky okres. The cascading waterfalls of the Čelno stream boast not one but two streams, with a 5 m drop forming on one of them, while the other is only half that height. Since 1991, they have been a nature monument, and the 11.7 ha area falls under the administration of the Poľana state nature conservation. Protection applies not only to the waterfalls but also to rock seas and well-preserved plant and animal communities, which are important from an educational, scientific, and ecological perspective.

Above the waterfalls, tourists will also find one technical monument. The Kelemenov tunel on the forest road is a Slovak rarity. It was established back in 1928 when the narrow forest road in the Predajnianske Čelno valley was being adapted for timber transport by horse-drawn carriages. At one point, it was impossible to cut the road into the steep slope, and thus a 280 cm wide tunnel was pierced. It was named after its author, Ing. Vojtech Kelemen, the then director of Štátne lesy Banská Bystrica. In 1971, the tunnel underwent reconstruction and was enlarged to a height of 435 cm, a width of 440 cm, and a length of 41.5 m, thereby adapting it for car traffic.

Children can also easily manage the undemanding trip to the Predajnianske vodopády. The walk is also worth undertaking in winter when unique icefalls form. Marked trails lead to the waterfalls both from Predajná (approximately 11 km) and from the village of Lopej (approximately 9 km). Cyclists can also look forward to reaching the waterfalls along a marked cycling route named "Popod Hrb až na Štopm".

Accommodation near Prednianskych vodopádov is oriented rather toward cottages and chalets; you can look for them, for example, in Osrblie or Horná Lehota. If you are looking for apartments, enter the village of Valaská into our filters. If you stay in chalets in Bystrá, you will be close to the Bystrianska jaskyňa as well.

Poľana nad Detvou

Poľana nad Detvou

Hriňová

The ski slopes start at an altitude of 1184 and end at 1320 meters above sea level. In the ski resort, you will find a trio of ski lifts that ensure comfortable and fast transport for all skiers. Poľana nad Detvou boasts a pair of ski slopes that will mainly appeal to less demanding skiers. The first ski slope is marked in blue and is intended for absolute beginners or children. More experienced skiers will certainly appreciate the red, moderately difficult ski slope. Once again, we must remind you of the breathtaking view that awaits you while traversing the snow-covered plains.

The total length of the ski slopes in the resort is 1.7 km. A ski kindergarten and a separate children's lift are intended for the youngest toddlers. Here they will learn the art of skiing either accompanied by their parents or through qualified ski instructors.

In addition to everything mentioned, the rich offer of additional services and the quality background of the ski resort will also please you. A free parking lot, a buffet, a quality restaurant, a ski equipment rental and storage, and a ski service await you here. The Poľana nad Detvou ski resort also thinks of cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Here they will find up to 7 km of maintained trails in the beautiful environment of the surrounding forests.

Considering that the resort is located deep in the mountains, you will have to count on the fact that accommodation will be somewhat further away. An exception is the mountain hotel directly on the slope. However, in the surrounding villages, there is a sufficient number of various cottages, private rooms, and apartments that will satisfy even the most demanding. You no longer need to think about it, just pack your bags and hit the road.

Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici

Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici

Banská Bystrica

Head out to Urpín hill, where a watchtower, known as a vartovka, was built several centuries ago. The hill, named Vartovka after it, is also home to the observatory, which is a favorite among the residents of Banská Bystrica. If you want to broaden your horizons and learn a bit more about astronomy and its related technical sciences, direct your steps straight to the Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici.

In 1961, the Ľudová hvezdáreň was solemnly opened on Vartovka, and 10 years later it became the Krajská hvezdáreň. As its scope gradually expanded, the observatory's premises grew as well. Today, it consists of an upper dome with an observatory housing the main high-end Celestron 1400 XLT telescope on a CGE mount. In the lower dome, you will find a modern telescope. Here you can observe the Sun in all its glory even during an eclipse, the Moon, or occultations of celestial bodies.

Did you know that already in the days of Matej Bel, people had an indescribable interest in exploring everything happening in the sky? The first observations backed by detailed records were thus carried out around 1855 during the time of Karol Zenger. It wasn't until after World War II that a club dedicated to astronomy and meteor observation was established at the local grammar school. Astronomy as such was therefore doing quite well. This fact motivated students and professors of the Vyššej pedagogickej školy to establish the Ľudová hvezdáreň. Plans varied, but in the end, they settled on the idea of converting the old built watchtower into the observatory that still stands there today.

If you come as an individual or a small group, you can choose from a variety of programs, sky observations, or film screenings. Outside, there is a fire pit and a relaxation terrace. A school trip will thus meet the expectations of every student. You can reach the observatory via a marked hiking trail, which begins on Žltý piesok street. Or will you choose the Náučný chodník Serpentíny Urpín and learn even more interesting information? Rest assured that if you plan to stay here longer, it is worth booking accommodation near the Hvezdáreň Banská Bystrica.

Come to Banská Bystrica to explore other attractions of the city and enjoy everything it has to offer. You will appreciate the many historical monuments in the square or simply relax in the outlying parts of the city if you come with your significant other. At that time, we recommend thinking about pleasant accommodation in Banská Bystrica. You can choose either one of the quality guesthouses or a somewhat more luxurious hotel room. You might even manage to catch a glimpse directly of the Hvezdáreň na Vartovke observatory or the peak of the Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského cathedral from your room window.

Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie

Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie

Banská Bystrica

Monuments in the historic city center are the pride of Banská Bystrica and a major attraction for its visitors. A true jewel is the oldest building in the town, Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie. The sacral building is the dominant feature of the town castle complex and has stood in the heart of the town for seven centuries. In addition to the beautiful Gothic architecture of the structure with its tall onion-domed tower, you can also admire other valuable monuments in the church interior. Among the most interesting is the Late Baroque organ or the unique sculpture depicting Christ on the Mount of Olives. If you are a lover of cultural and historical monuments, a holiday in Banská Bystrica will certainly be an unforgettable experience for you.

Rich German burghers contributed to the creation of Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, which is why it is also commonly called the German Church. Its construction began in the 13th century on the foundations of an original Romanesque basilica. In the first half of the 14th century, the church underwent a major reconstruction, and only the lower part of the tower and the western facade were preserved from the original structure. Toward the east, the town built a new single-nave Gothic church.

In the 15th century, chapels were added to the church. On the western side of the sacristy, the Kaplnka sv. Barbory with a stellar vaulting grew at that time. The luxuriously furnished church was destroyed by massive fires that struck the town in 1500 and 1761. During the final reconstruction, the entire interior was modified in the Baroque style, and it was during this period that the tower received its eye-catching onion-shaped roof.

Currently, the entire vault of the church is covered with a painting by Franz Schmidt from the 18th century. The main altar has a massive architecture decorated with a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In the Kaplnka Kristovho tela, you can admire a 15th-century Gothic altar transferred from Kostol sv. Jakuba behind the village of Jakub.

The gem of Kaplnka sv. Barbory is a winged Gothic altar originating from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The valuable relief of Christ on the Mount of Olives is situated in the exterior, on the southwestern corner. The impressive Late Gothic organ was built in 1779 by Michal Podkonický, son of organ builder Martin Podkonický. The organ originally had 24 stops in three cases. Over the years it was reconstructed twice and currently has 55 stops in two cases, operating as an electro-pneumatic organ. It is richly decorated with works by Master Ján Uttner.

You simply cannot bypass the church, which ranks among the most valuable ecclesiastical monuments in Slovakia, when visiting Banská Bystrica. Reserve more time for its tour because the sacral building is part of the entire Mestský hrad castle area, whose main task in the past was the protection of extracted mineral wealth, primarily copper. Today, within its premises, you can also visit, among other things, the Stredoslovenská oblastná galéria with more than 9,000 exhibits.

And when, after touring the cultural and historical wealth of the town, you get a taste for a different kind of experience, let yourself be invited to a tour of the night sky during an excursion at the Hvezdáreň v Banskej Bystrici observatory. Or are you rather in the mood to visit Aqualand - Plážové kúpalisko, where you will experience an endless amount of water fun? Holiday options in this town are truly diverse. Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského

Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského

Banská Bystrica

The metropolis of Central Slovakia, the city of Banská Bystrica, boasts an unusual wealth of sacral and secular historical monuments. Among the most precious and at the same time most beautiful is undoubtedly the Katedrála sv. Františka Xaverského. It is situated right on the corner of Námestie SNP. The single-nave church with two tall towers has been the cathedral church of the Banská Bystrica bishop for more than 200 years. Located here is the episcopal cathedral, the throne from which the bishop explains Christian doctrine to the people. In addition to a spiritual message, visitors also come here for the beautiful architecture and rich decoration of this historic building.

The Jesuits began building the cathedral church in the 17th century based on Jesuit churches in Rome. The sacral building stands on the site of an original house of a wealthy burgher, which included a Gothic chapel. In the 16th century, it was the only place in the city where Catholic services were held. The church was completed after a long 20 years, and in 1776 it was converted into a cathedral church. A more significant intervention in its original architecture was an extensive reconstruction, for which the fourth bishop of the Banská Bystrica Diocese, Jozef Belanský, left funds in his will. At that time, towers were added to the church, between which a portico with four Tuscan columns was added.

The single-nave church is built in the Baroque style. It has two towers, six side chapels, and a choir gallery around the entire perimeter. Its main altar is adorned with the original painting of Saint Francis Xavier from 1729. The rich interior decoration is in the spirit of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council. In 2003, a new pipe organ was added to the church, thanks to which the church also becomes an occasional venue for concerts.

Perhaps during your holidays, you also like to discover the cultural and historical treasures of the cities and towns you visit. In that case, definitely plan a holiday in Banská Bystrica. In addition to the cathedral church, you can also admire the Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, which is the dominant feature of the Mestský hrad. This building houses an administrative headquarters, exhibition spaces, and a depository from the collection of the Stredoslovenská galéria. The spaces are thus regularly filled and enrich the souls of all visitors. A unique feature of the gallery is artistic printmaking, the art of graphics from the second half of the 20th century. This collection is complete. The Stredoslovenská galéria, of which Bethlenov dom is also a part, focuses mainly on the presentation, research, and creation of a collection of modern and contemporary art.

Bethlenov dom consists of an entrance room and an exhibition space on the ground floor. On the upper floor, the exhibition spaces are vaulted with historical arches. A specific genius loci can thus be felt here. In the basement, groups dedicated to fine art will find something for themselves, where they can create art themselves and express themselves creatively. In the rear part of the gallery, in the library, you will find knowledge hidden in books that have been gathered here over decades.

The history of the gallery dates back to the 14th century, when a multi-story house was added to the originally tower-like burgher structure. At the entrance, a Latin inscription Benedicto domini divites facit 1610 is preserved, which in free translation means: The blessing of the Lord makes you rich. A tradition is linked to the house that Gabriel Bethlen had himself crowned as the King of Hungary here. Unfortunately, due to the unsuccessful anti-Habsburg uprising, he had to give up the crown.

On the last Sunday of the month, admission to the gallery is free. Therefore, if you plan your trip as early as Friday and book accommodation near Bethlenov dom for at least two nights, you will experience all the works of art firsthand. However, if you would also like to explore other buildings of the Stredoslovenská galéria with multiple exhibitions, feel free to head to Pretórium or Vila Dominika Skuteckého.

Partizánska republika Kalište

Partizánska republika Kalište

Banská Bystrica

Some sights leave deep feelings in people after visiting them. One such place is Kalište – osada declared a national cultural monument, located near Banská Bystrica. The Partizánska republika Kalište (Partisan Republic of Kalište) was a long-term area controlled by partisans on the southern slopes of the Nízke Tatry.

Today, we would search in vain for traces of this settlement's development. Nestled among coniferous forests, the slightly huddled village speaks for itself about a cruel truth. Even upon visiting this settlement, you will understand what terrible things happened here. With your own eyes, you will see burnt and demolished houses, a cemetery, two small houses with a chapel, and a tree above the grave of fallen partisans. It is precisely in the 2 already reconstructed houses that an exhibition of the Múzeum SNP titled Partizánska republika is open to the public.

During the Second World War, the village of Kalište was the so-called center of the partisan republic. Local people supported it passionately because, thanks to the partisans, they saw hope for a better tomorrow. However, the Germans did not like this, and on 18 March 1945, they set fire to the village and murdered the locals. Almost no living soul remained here. Precisely so that this devastation from many years ago is not forgotten, the Partizánska republika Kalište serves as a detached exhibition of the Múzeum SNP in Banská Bystrica. Life in this municipality was never restored, making it the only one of its kind in Slovakia.

Every year, the memory of the fallen villagers is commemorated during the SNP anniversary celebrations in Banská Bystrica. If you head directly to the settlement, 17 informative boards, part of an educational trail located throughout the entire area, will guide you through the history of Kalište. You can reach the settlement directly from Donovaly on foot along the yellow tourist trail or via cycling routes leading through the surrounding villages. Alternatively, you can choose to drive through Moštenica. If you set off for the settlement early in the morning, we recommend booking accommodation near Partizánska republika Kalište.

Somewhat better feelings will be left in you by other attractions in Banská Bystrica and its surroundings. During the summer season, swimming at Aqualand – Plážové kúpalisko is a great option. Or would you like to plan a visit to the observatory as part of your holiday in Banská Bystrica? Remember, the best childhood memories come when a trip is longer and the accommodation is cozy. Therefore, choose an apartment in Banská Bystrica. If you come as a couple who simply enjoys spending time discovering new points of interest, a hotel room will suffice for you as well. Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek

Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek

Hronsek

Not far from the famous Kúpele Sliač spa, in the picturesque village of Hronsek, you will find a gem of sacral architecture, the Drevený artikulárny kostol, which, together with its wooden belfry, is one of the largest wooden structures in Central Europe. Did you know that the term artikulárny (articular) originates in history and means the church had to be built according to legal articles? These articles were adopted in 1681 at the Diet of Sopron and specified that the temple had to be built entirely of wood within a single year, no metal parts could be used in its construction, it could not have a tower, and the entrance to the temple could not face directly onto the street.

Construction of the Hronsek articular church began on October 23, 1725, and a year later, in the autumn of 1726, it was completed. The church carries elements of Scandinavian architecture, yet blends multiple styles from across Europe. It stands 8 meters high and has an impressive length of 26 meters. The ground plan of the church is in the shape of a cross. An interesting detail is the unique use of oak pegs instead of iron nails. Oak and spruce wood were used for the construction of the frame. The inner vaulting of the church resembles an inverted ship in its shape. The lower part of the choirs is decorated with ornaments in the shape of a linden leaf, representing a symbol of Slavic consciousness.

The church has 5 separate entrances built opposite one another. Above one of the entrances, a rooster is placed as a symbol of Christian vigilance. The interior is illuminated by 30 hexagonal blown-glass windows. The unique arrangement of pews, reminiscent of amphitheater seating, accommodates up to 1,100 people. Also remarkable are its excellent acoustics and the fact that the altar and preacher are visible from every seat in the church. The magnificent altar with six interchangeable paintings in a single frame was painted in 1771 by master Samuel Mialovič. The paintings are rotated according to the current liturgical season. Another dominant feature of the church is the organ, built in 1764 by the famous Banská Bystrica master Martin Podkonický.

A wooden belfry was built alongside the church in 1726. Four massive linden trees standing beside the church were planted to celebrate the completion of construction and represent a deep connection between nature and the human soul. The Slovak poet Andrej Sládkovič and Antónia Júlia Senkovičová, who hailed from Hronsek, also said their "I do's" here. Evangelical church services take place here every Sunday at 9:00 AM. Next to the church stands a vicarage where Ján Simonides and August Horislav Krčméry served. On July 7, 2008, the Drevený artikulárny kostol in Hronsek was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Do not forget to book your tour in advance by phone.

We believe that a visit to this unique wooden church will touch your heart and leave a deep impression on you. Stay longer in this beautiful region beneath the Kremnické vrchy. Comfortable accommodation near Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek can be found on our page accommodation in Hronsek. Plan a family trip and discover other fantastic attractions in the surrounding area. Indulge in a well-deserved rest and relax in the nearby Kúpele Sliač spa. Let yourself be pampered and enjoy the healing power of balneotherapy. Near the spa, you will also find the summer thermal pool Termálne kúpalisko Sliač, which offers a circular children's pool in addition to a swimming pool. We wish you a wonderful holiday full of unforgettable experiences.

The water in this pool is heated to a comfortable 28 °C, and up to 208 swimmers can train their skills simultaneously. And once you pleasantly tire your body out with a sports performance in the water, treat yourself to a rest in the steam sauna located directly by the pool. Measuring 5 x 3.5 m, the sauna operates at temperatures from 37 °C to 45 °C with 100% humidity. It is designed for 12 people, and the pleasant, relaxing atmosphere is enhanced by scented essences.

In the paddling pool, your little ones will also enjoy water features—a small fountain, a water hedgehog, and a bottom air bubble feature.

The icing on the cake of relaxation is the separate sauna world. Here you can indulge in ultimate relaxation in a Finnish, Russian, Turkish, herbal, or infrared sauna. Or perhaps you would prefer a peat wrap? This part of the indoor pool complex also includes two pools—an indoor whirlpool pool for lovers of quiet rest and an outdoor ice pool for enthusiastic cold-water swimmers who enjoy a quick cool-down after a sauna session. There is no shortage of a 1st-century Celtic iron workshop and a blacksmith's forge either. You can look at the world from a different perspective from the observation tower, which features educational panels of the Horehronie ironworks complex. You will also find two iron production factories here—one from the Renaissance period with a reduction melting furnace and a forging hammer, and the second a steam-powered one dating back to the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. A pillar blast furnace was used for smelting ore. Material was transported by a cargo cableway for ore transportation. In the audiovisual hall, you can watch a demonstration film that will immerse you even further into this environment.

Covering an area of 1 hectare, in addition to an engaging commentary, you can enjoy a break on wooden benches. Šachtičky

Šachtičky

Špania Dolina

Nízke Tatry attract almost every passionate hiker. Peaks like Chopok or Ďumbier are known to perhaps everyone. However, Nízke Tatry are not formed only by their main ridge; you will also find many undiscovered yet beautiful corners here. We will now take you to one of them.

Imagine a small village in a beautiful and quiet environment. High mountains rise all around, and dense forests tempt you for a walk. Do you think you cannot find such a place in our country? Mistake. All you need to do is head to the ski resort Šachtičky. It lies just a short distance from one of the most beautiful mountain villages in Slovakia, Špania Dolina. This village is located a few kilometers north of the well-known Banská Bystrica.

Šachtičky in the foothills of Nízke Tatry welcomes all skiers. Its main advantage is excellent snow conditions. Deep in the mountains, winter is always harsh, and there is usually more natural snow here than usual. Furthermore, the artificial snowmaking system significantly helps in the resort as well. Šachtičky is a relatively large and interesting ski complex. You will find slopes of all difficulty levels here: blue, red, and black. Approximately half of all trails are marked in red, indicating medium difficulty slopes.

Šachtičky is also great for beginner skiers. In other ski resorts, it is customary to set aside only a few short lifts and slopes at the bottom of the resort for beginners. Šachtičky is different and offers top-class slopes even to beginners. One of the blue slopes is almost 2 km long and is the longest in the resort. The second is over 1.5 km long, which is also a respectable length. Thus, you do not have to worry about skiing on a very short slope all day long.

Ski Šachtičky is situated at an altitude of 802 to 1,102 meters above sea level. So prepare for a harsh winter and, what is even better, a beautiful panoramic view. That will be the icing on the cake of your perfect skiing experience. A total of five ski lifts ensure that you ski more than you wait in line. The total capacity of the resort is almost 3,000 skiers per hour. Šachtičky is a suitable ski resort even for a multi-day winter vacation due to the total length of the slopes. It reaches more than 10 km, which ranks Šachtičky among the larger Slovak ski resorts.

Just as great as all 9 slopes in the resort are the additional services. You will find a children's area for the youngest skiers, a ski service shop, rental shop, a snack bar with a terrace, a restaurant, and accommodation facilities right next to the slope. If you love cross-country skiing, bring your cross-country skis to Šachtičky as well. Up to 14 km of trails in a beautiful setting with views of Nízke Tatry await you here.

In winter, Šachtičky is a popular ski resort, and in summer, it transforms into a well-known recreational area. Thanks to this status, it offers varied accommodation options. A pleasant hotel or mountain chalets in the immediate vicinity of the ski lifts are available to you here. Nearby, there are private accommodation options suitable for unpretentious tourists requiring complete privacy. Šachtičky certainly belongs among the ski resorts you should try.

Historický vlak vo Vígľaši

Historický vlak vo Vígľaši

Vígľaš

If you are also among train enthusiasts, we recommend going on a trip to see the historical train in Vígľaš. An original monument of the forest railway is located in the small village of Vígľaš, between the towns of Detva and Zvolen. A very well-preserved part of the train set and several meters of the track itself are accessible to visitors year-round. It is situated right by the main road, so you certainly will not miss it. No entrance fee is charged, so you can come anytime and admire this unusual attraction.

The forest railway served to transport harvested timber and originally ran from Poľana to Vígľaš. Construction began in 1904, and a year later the first section to the Očová sawmill was completed. The entire track was finished in 1907 and was 26 kilometers long. Originally, the railway operated with horse-drawn carriages; later, it was equipped with a steam locomotive. Eventually, technical progress also enabled the use of a motor locomotive.

During World War II, the train fulfilled another honorable function. It supplied partisans who were hiding in the surrounding mountains. Today, only a short section of the entire railway has been preserved; however, you can still admire the U175 48 steam engine, a passenger carriage, a flatcar, and four timber-logging cars. The historical train in Vígľaš has thus become a valuable monument to the forest railway as well as a rewarding subject for great artistic photographs.

We recommend combining the trip with other attractions in the area. Find accommodation near the historical train in Vígľaš and also visit the ruins of Vígľašský zámok castle, which towers above the banks of the Slatina river. Just a few minutes' drive away lies the interesting Kameňolom pod Ježovou quarry. You can easily combine your trip with a visit to the town of Zvolen, where we recommend visiting Zvolenský hrad castle or Arborétum Borová Hora. If you should long for technical monuments, another unique attraction awaits you along the way, the pancierový vlak Hurban armored train. The location truly offers many interesting sights worth seeing. Pack your backpacks, take your cameras, and head out on a trip, even by train if you like.

Galéria Jána Kulicha

Galéria Jána Kulicha

Zvolenská Slatina

He was profoundly convinced that everything he created belonged to Slovakia, and through his work, he tirelessly proved how beautiful and rich it is. Ján Kulich is one of the most prominent representatives of 20th-century Slovak art. It is precisely to his life's work that Galéria Jána Kulicha, situated in the heart of the village of Zvolenská Slatina in the Zvolen district, is dedicated. The gallery building with a large adjacent garden is located between the school and the Evangelical church. Here, you can admire the artist's work in all its diversity. Wooden statuettes from his childhood, drawings, and sketches, as well as monumental sculptures, have been preserved. You will not easily forget this artistic experience.

The modern gallery has its home in a simple linear building. The structure is oriented toward the north, where an old vicarage stood in the past. It was right here that historical figures once gathered, and it was also the birthplace of Terézia Vansová. Part of the gallery grounds is a restored fragment of one wall of the original vicarage with artistic embellishment. Before entering the gallery building, an engaging frontal sculpture will welcome you. It will look familiar if you have ever visited the village of Terchová in the past. It is a scaled-down version of the monumental statue of Juraj Jánošík that guards the entrance to Vrátna dolina. Its author is none other than the artist Ján Kulich.

The main mission of the gallery is to preserve and present the work of Ján Kulich to the public. Right here, you have the opportunity to get acquainted with the broad range and content scope of the great national artist's creation. The gallery's collection consists of almost 3,700 original works. You can admire wooden statuettes from the author's childhood creation, drawings, sketches, and paintings, as well as medals, reliefs, sculptures, and portraits. All presented works are assembled into several thematic circles of the artist's lifelong key themes. The exhibition is updated annually.

An interesting part of the gallery's activity is the implementation of educational programs targeted not only at children and youth. Cultural projects, creative workshops, and cultural-social events in the garden are organized here. Children love participating in fun trivia competitions and activities, playing detectives, searching for treasure, or taking part in drawing mini-workshops. The gallery also offers its unique premises for rent. If its grounds charm you, you can organize, for example, a family celebration, wedding, or wedding photoshoot here.

After a beautiful artistic experience in Zvolenská Slatina, we also recommend a trip to the nearby Vígľašský zámok castle, recreation in Športový areál Orlík in Zvolen, and a tour of the majestic Zvolenský hrad. A trip to Pustý hrad and a tour of the picturesque wooden articular church in Hronsek are also unique experiences. There are many more tourist attractions and sights in this region. Come and see for yourself. Book accommodation near Galéria Jána Kulicha and combine relaxation with discovering cultural and historical wealth. You can choose from the accommodation offer in Zvolenská Slatina and adjacent areas, or you can opt for accommodation in Zvolen. On our portal, you will certainly find facilities that meet your requirements.

Kúpele Sliač

Kúpele Sliač

Sliač

Kúpele Sliač are located between the towns of Banská Bystrica and Zvolen in Central Slovakia. The small spa town of Sliač is known for its healing water, which has beneficial effects on the treatment of the musculoskeletal and circulatory systems. In addition to spa stays, Sliač is exceptional for its international and military airport, which hosts popular air shows every year.

The history of Kúpele Sliač dates back to 1244. It is from the period when King Béla IV elevated Zvolen to a royal town that we find the first mentions of the power of the healing spring in the area. According to legend, a local woman suffering from fluid retention allegedly soaked her feet in thermal water while retting hemp. Her feet swelled down after the bath and the illness eventually completely disappeared over time. The Rybáre part of Sliač, where warm water marshes were located, aroused interest as well as fear in the past. For unknown reasons, birds and all living creatures died here. It was later discovered that this was caused by a high concentration of carbon dioxide, specifically vapors from the mineral healing water.

The first guests stumbled upon the Rybáre spa as early as the late 17th century, but it was not until the 18th century that its healing power was officially recognized. Spa buildings, accommodation, and catering facilities were built directly above the spring relatively quickly. The good reputation of the spa spread throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Even Joseph, Prince Palatine of Hungary, came here to be treated for anemia.

Indications treated at the spa include oncological diseases, diseases of the circulatory system – heart and blood vessels, musculoskeletal disorders, as well as gynecological conditions. The spa provides treatment to patients based on a doctor's recommendation covered by health insurance. However, stays for seniors and self-payers are also offered.

A natural spring gas collected directly from the spa spring is used for this unique method of treatment. It contains 98% carbon dioxide. In combination with other gas components, it holds irreplaceable medical significance. In addition, the thermal mineral water itself is used. Its temperature is 33.3 °C, meaning it can be used for spa treatment without any intervention.

There are four springs of healing water in the spa, and each spring is suitable for a different ailment. The Štefánik spring, thanks to its high iron content, is recommended for the treatment of anemia and to support digestion. If you are troubled by stomach issues, water from the Bystrica spring is made just for you. The Lenkey spring will in turn help you with thyroid or eye conditions. And water from the Adam spring is used to treat the urinary bladder.

Both water and gas travel directly from the spring into the spa rooms where medical procedures take place. Balneotherapy – carbon dioxide baths, rehabilitation pools, and mineral water inhalation – is considered the main procedure. Other procedures include hydrotherapy, sauna sessions, heat therapy in the form of wraps, physiotherapy, and even a salt cave.

Kúpele Sliač are surrounded by a natural forest park. English gardens with ponds are established here, and in summer all the colors of flowers shine brightly. Squirrels happily hop around in the park, and some will even let you feed them directly from your hand. The surroundings are ideal for relaxation and recharging your energy. If you head here for a spa stay, take a look at some of the trip tips around the town of Sliač that we have prepared for you.

A thermal swimming pool is also located near the spa. Families with children like to come here to relax, and children can go wild on the playground or in the children's pool. The water in the swimming pool comes from a mineral spring and is strongly ferruginous, which is why it is colored brown. However, the pool is flow-through, which means that the water in it is constantly being refreshed.

After relaxing at the swimming pool, you can visit the nearby Zvolenský hrad, which is the dominant feature of the town of Zvolen. Do not miss a trip to Pustý hrad or Harmanecká jaskyňa. A touch of history awaits you in the folk architecture reservation of Špania Dolina.

A holiday for families with children, seniors, or couples in the spa town of Sliač is the right choice for you. Choose from our wide offer of apartments, guesthouses, or cottages. You can find accommodation near Kúpele Sliač on our portal. Enjoy a relaxing stay in Sliač and book your accommodation with us today.

The venue is the Prírodný amfiteáter v Detve, which is known for its unique wooden architecture and location at the foot of the extinct volcano Poľana. The festival is famous for its effort to preserve original forms of folk expression, dominated by intricate dances (cifrované tance), playing the fujara (listed by UNESCO), and rich Detva folk costumes with the typical short shirt. The festival program includes large stage performances as well as intimate shows in courtyards and on small stages that bring the everyday life and customs of ancestors closer to visitors. An important part consists of accompanying events such as a folk craft fair, dance school, or presentations of folk musical instrument makers. During these days, Detva becomes a living museum where visitors naturally find themselves at the center of the action, surrounded by the sound of button accordions (heligónky) and the taste of traditional Podpoľanie specialties. Thanks to its strong focus on authenticity, the festival maintains a high professional standard and is considered the peak of the season for every lover of genuine folk culture.

What can you find here?

On the amphitheater grounds, you will find the main stage for large folklore ensembles, craft courtyards with manufacturing demonstrations, and sales stalls with folk products. Gastronomic zones offering halušky, pirohy, and homemade bread are available, as well as exhibitions of period photographs and folk costumes. The program also includes a traditional Sunday parade through the town and the Krajanský dvor, which presents the culture of Slovaks living abroad.

Who is the place suitable for?

The festival is ideal for lovers of folklore, history, and ethnography, as well as for families with children looking for an authentic cultural experience in nature. It is also sought after by foreign tourists who want to experience Slovak traditions in their purest form. Given the summer weather and the outdoor nature of the area, headwear, sturdy shoes, and plenty of fluids are recommended during a full-day stay in the sun.

What can you visit in the surroundings?

Located directly in the town is the Podpolianske múzeum with exhibitions on the town's history and the crafting of fujaras. Within easy reach is the Poľana protected landscape area (Chránená krajinná oblasť Poľana) with the unique Vodopád Bystré waterfall or a lookout tower. For lovers of sacred art, the distinctive village of Hriňová is within accessible distance, featuring numerous carved wooden crosses scattered across the surrounding scattered settlements (lazy).

Banícky orloj v Španej Doline

Špania Dolina

The Banícky orloj in Špania Dolina is a tribute to the grueling work of miners and pitmen in this region. The village of Špania Dolina, closely tied to mining and copper ore extraction for centuries, is located in the Banská Bystrica district. It lies approximately 14 km north of the district town, in the western part of the Starohorské vrchy. The unique animated astronomical clock (orloj) is situated directly on the village square next to Klopačka, a former mining guardhouse and seat of the mining inspectorate. It reveals its interior showing the hard work of miners in the shaft and adits to visitors every hour on the hour.

The Banícky orloj was built in Špania Dolina in 2004. Not by chance did it find its place right on the village square next to Klopačka. In the past, mining supervisors resided in this historical building, and mining maps were produced here. The building's turret served to house the knocking device, hence the name Klopačka. In the past, miners were summoned to the shaft by a specific knocking sound. The building functioned this way until 1910. It then fell into disrepair for several years until undergoing reconstruction in 1998. Currently, it houses a restaurant with a small museum exhibition upstairs.

The clock itself is essentially a model of a mine. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary stone wall. On the hour, however, the familiar knocking sounds and the solid wall begins to open. Behind it lies a mine with a shaft and adits. Figures of miners depict various mining activities here. Some are just descending into the shaft, while others are diligently breaking rocks or loading ore onto carts. Overlooking everyone here is the patron saint of miners, St. Clement.
