It is located in the Nízke Tatry, just like its sisters, the well-known Demänovské jaskyne – Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa and Demänovská jaskyňa slobody. You will find it a piece from Brezno, right before Mýto pod Ďumbierom. It lies in the namesake village of Bystrá. Why visit it?

The character of the cave is somewhat different than the others. In them you will find large spacious domes and halls, but Bystrianska jaskyňa differs from them. In it you will find primarily narrow and high corridors, in which you will feel like a true caver. The cave is mainly from limestone and dolomite, which easily forms and similar karst forms arise in it. In the cave there is also the Peklo abyss, deep up to 56 meters. Despite the narrow corridors, you will also find beautiful halls with dripstone decoration here, for example Sieň Baldachýnov or Zrútený dóm. Company will be made for you during your visit by up to 8 species of various bats.

The entry parts of this cave were known by locals already very long ago. Into their interiors they however didn't dare for a long time, for the first time it was in the year 1923. The cave consists of two parts, Stará and Nová jaskyňa. Into that Nová one was descended through the aforementioned Peklo abyss. To opening for the broad public the cave lived to see in the years 1939-1940.

Today opened route of the cave has a length of 545 meters. It is suitable also for immobile visitors, since you will find here only 20 stairs, which with the help of others is not a problem to overcome. A curiosity of the cave is that the entrance and exit are in two different places. Other caves are sometimes longer, however along one place you go twice. Here you pass through almost all parts of the cave only once and you see more of it. Prepare yourself however for a low temperature and therefore dress yourself better. The whole route is almost without elevation change and you will enjoy it in every age. Do not forget, that on Monday is the cave closed for the public and select yourself for the visit on another day.

The surroundings are full of opportunities for spending free time. You can go to the massive Ďumbier, visit the nearby jaskyňu Mŕtvych netopierov or play golf. As a starting point will serve you stylish mountain accommodation, for example in nearby Mýto pod Ďumbierom, or Bystrá. The Predajnianske vodopády are located in the cadastral area of the village of Predajná in the Brezniansky okres. The cascading waterfalls of the Čelno stream boast not one but two streams, with a 5 m drop forming on one of them, while the other is only half that height. Since 1991, they have been a nature monument, and the 11.7 ha area falls under the administration of the Poľana state nature conservation. Protection applies not only to the waterfalls but also to rock seas and well-preserved plant and animal communities, which are important from an educational, scientific, and ecological perspective.

Above the waterfalls, tourists will also find one technical monument. The Kelemenov tunel on the forest road is a Slovak rarity. It was established back in 1928 when the narrow forest road in the Predajnianske Čelno valley was being adapted for timber transport by horse-drawn carriages. At one point, it was impossible to cut the road into the steep slope, and thus a 280 cm wide tunnel was pierced. It was named after its author, Ing. Vojtech Kelemen, the then director of Štátne lesy Banská Bystrica. In 1971, the tunnel underwent reconstruction and was enlarged to a height of 435 cm, a width of 440 cm, and a length of 41.5 m, thereby adapting it for car traffic.

Children can also easily manage the undemanding trip to the Predajnianske vodopády. The walk is also worth undertaking in winter when unique icefalls form. Marked trails lead to the waterfalls both from Predajná (approximately 11 km) and from the village of Lopej (approximately 9 km). Cyclists can also look forward to reaching the waterfalls along a marked cycling route named "Popod Hrb až na Štopm".

Skiing for everyone. What does such a broad concept include? Above all, it means skiing at a good price, somewhere where you do not stand in lines for lifts and can choose from several slope difficulties. Where can you find it? As we have already signaled, it is located on the southern side of the Nízke Tatry mountains. It is a popular recreational area, and the trip will take you a short while. You can get here from the direction of Brezno, continuing to Podbrezová, where you will turn towards the village of Dolná Lehota. From there follows a several-kilometer-long asphalt road in the heart of pristine nature all the way to the recreational resort Krpáčovo. You will find many accommodation options here, but above all the main thing, a picturesque ski resort in the middle of deep forests, almost at the edge of the world. Making the trip all the way here is definitely worth it; you will find fairy-tale charm here. Snow-covered trees, postcard-worthy winter, and smiling people. You could not ask for anything more.

The resort is known for its family atmosphere. Despite the fact that you will find only 3 lifts and a total of 1.4 km of slopes here, it will not feel like too little to you. In a beautiful environment, you will enjoy every single centimeter of the trail. These are intended primarily for intermediate skiers, to whom the larger part of the resort is dedicated. Even complete beginners will find their spot here, for whom an easy, blue-marked section of the slope with its own lift is designated.

The longest slope of the resort reaches 650 meters, which is a fairly sufficient figure even for more demanding skiers. The resort is located at an altitude of 768 to 866 meters above sea level. It is not exactly the highest, but thanks to the artificial snowmaking system, you can comfortably ski here from December through March.

Here you will find a ski nursery for the little ones or a snack bar with pleasant refreshments. In short, everything you need and in great quality. The family atmosphere will only reinforce the impression of perfect skiing in Krpáčovo.

The surroundings are also favorable for day-trippers. Tourists visit Chopok, Ďumbier, or Jaskyňa Mŕtvych netopierov. There is truly plenty to see. In summer, you can play golf in nearby Tále and experience its beauty firsthand.

The reservoir serves summer recreation; you can swim and practice water sports here, but fishing is popular as well. An ascent to Chopok, Dereše, or Ďumbier can also be planned. Cycling routes lead, for instance, to Bystrianska jaskyňa and to the village of Tále.

For those planning a visit in winter, marked cross-country trails are prepared in the vicinity, as well as the Lyžiarske stredisko Krpáčovo ski resort in close proximity to the lake, not to mention a wide range of ski resorts in the surrounding area: for example, Srdiečko and Kosodrevina on Chopok, Tále, Mýto pod Ďumbierom, and many others.

Overall, the resort focuses on intermediate skiers and complete beginners. Ski newcomers can look forward to a pair of blue slopes where they don't have to worry about their first meters on the snow. However, the larger part of the resort caters to intermediate skiers, families, or those who want to enjoy a relaxed ski experience.

The total length of the slopes is approximately 5 kilometers, and you don't have to worry about snow cover. The Mýto resort is located in a snow-rich area, and to top it off, it is equipped with a modern artificial snowmaking system.

In Mýto pod Ďumbierom, you will find 5 ski lifts and one chairlift. The total capacity of the ski resort reaches up to 3,600 skiers per hour, which is plenty to ensure a comfortable ski experience.

Mýto pod Ďumbierom is a ski resort tailored for families with children who already have some skiing experience under their belt. It boasts great snow conditions, interesting slopes, and additionally many opportunities for trips into the surrounding area. Disc Golf originated in the 1970s in California. It was invented by the American Ed Headrick. Disc Golf is a sort of combination of frisbee and golf. Compared to golf, it has the advantage that, apart from discs, you do not need any other equipment. The goal of the game is to get the disc into baskets placed around the playing course using the fewest possible throws. The Disc Golf course in Krpáčovo is world-class. It was designed very sensitively to blend into the wonderful nature that you can enjoy to the fullest throughout the entire game. Upon arrival at the course, after paying the entrance fee, you will receive three discs and a scorecard to record the results of your game. The blue disc is metal and is used for throwing long distances. The yellow-green disc is plastic and is intended for medium distances. The pink one is also plastic and is used for short distances and completing the hole.

A total of 12 DG baskets are installed on the course. These are baskets that resemble basketball hoops, but unlike them, they have attached steel chains used to catch the playing discs. Kúpele Brusno is among the popular Slovak spas. It lies northeast of the city of Banská Bystrica, in the Slovenské rudohorie mountain range. The Brusnianska valley, in which the spa is located, is also called the valley of Peklo (Hell). Not because of hellfire, but because of the tributary of the Peklo river, which flows into the Brusnianka stream. One of the less known nooks of the southern side of Chopok close to Srdiečko is Dereše. An older ski lift leads to a height of approximately 2000 meters above sea level. Dereše are interesting not only for their natural beauty but also for a beautiful slope with open terrain where you don't have to worry about queues of people. The southern side has a completely different atmosphere, and many will like it more than the more commercial northern side.

Srdiečko is very easily accessible; a classic road even leads here. You can get here from the direction of Tále. The village of Ľubietová, situated in the Banská Bystrica district, has been associated with the mining and processing of copper and iron ores since time immemorial. Mining adits and dumps in Ľubietová still remind locals and visitors of the former glory of a privileged royal mining town. Within the scope of the Náučný banský chodník educational trail, there are 18 adits in which copper and iron ore were mined in the past. Some of them are still full of interesting minerals. Ľubietová copper was exported to the world under the Lebentzer brand in the past. Its mining ended approximately in 1912. In the part of the village called Podlipa, a huge dump field formed by 18 adits remained after copper mining. Most of them are currently already caved in, but you have the opportunity to peer into four of them during your walk along the Náučný banský chodník educational trail. The 50 m long Andreas adit, the Dolný Johan hewn gallery, the Horný Johan hewn gallery, and the Ladislav mine are accessible. If you are lucky, you might also see the rare langite on the waste heaps of some of them. It will certainly captivate you with its beautiful color and glass-like reflection. However, malachite and cuprite occur here more frequently.

With the hard work of miners, the method of copper processing, and also the mining history of the village of Ľubietová, 13 information panels placed at the stops of the educational trail will introduce you more closely. The starting point of the moderately demanding route is the center of the village. You will walk in a loop from Ľubietová via Banský závoz and Podlipa back to the village in approximately 2.5 hours. In addition to abandoned adits, typical miner log cabins will also make your walk more pleasant. A part of the former mining settlement has been preserved in the surroundings of the adits. Today, the houses are inhabited by residents of Ľubietová or weekend cottage owners.

You will find it at its very end. While walking through the valley, make some natural noise, as bears occur in large numbers in these places. In fact, the first chamois were released here in the past, relocated from the Vysoké Tatry mountains.

You can reach the waterfall from the village of Dolná Lehota. From there, your steps will lead along a 13.5 km long hiking trail that ends right at Vajskovský vodopád. It involves walking along an asphalt road, which you will leave approximately 1.5 km from the waterfall. From there, you will continue through a small forest and a meadow. Whether you go on foot or pedal on a bicycle is entirely up to you. Given the terrain, the hike is classified as easy. And we certainly recommend completing it in winter as well, when the waterfall offers a beautiful icy view.

Please note that due to moving within the Národný park Nízke Tatry, it is forbidden to make fires, camp, or pick forest berries. With its parameters, the Jasná ski resort resembles Alpine rather than Slovak ski resorts. Judge for yourself: 45 kilometers of slopes, 2 gondolas, 7 chairlifts, 15 ski lifts, and one of the world's unique attractions: a funitel on the northern side. It is the most modern and fastest type of gondola lift you can encounter. A single cabin can accommodate up to 24 skiers. And the total capacity of the resort? A dizzying more than 30,000 skiers per hour.

Jasná is divided into two parts, which were successfully connected precisely thanks to the funitel. Into the more extensive and better-known northern side, and the beautiful, less touched southern side. It is precisely the southern side we will look at today.

The southern slopes of Chopok, especially in the area called Kosodrevina, are only for the best and most experienced skiers. This part of the resort is located between the peak of Chopok and the Horský hotel Kosodrevina mountain hotel. Chopok stands at an altitude of over 2,000 meters and undoubtedly belongs among our most majestic and popular peaks. Today, you can ski directly from its summit.

All slopes in this area are black, the most demanding. If you are not confident on skis, don't even try it here. Due to their steep incline, the slopes on the southern side are groomed less frequently than those in the north. Be prepared for that, but when fresh snow falls, skiing at Kosodrevina is perhaps the best skiing experience in the country. The slopes here are serviced by 3 ski lifts and, above all, a brand-new 15-passenger gondola leading from the Kosodrevina hotel at an altitude of 1,495 meters above sea level directly to the summit of Chopok.

On the southern slope of Chopok, at Kosodrevina, you will find numerous steep chutes that will be appreciated especially by freeride enthusiasts. Riding through pristine, untouched powder will become an addiction, and you will never want to stop. Add to that the magnificent views into the valley, and the result will be an unforgettable skiing experience.

Jaskyňa mŕtvych netopierov is one of the most extensive and most important high-mountain caves in Slovakia. It is also the only accessible high-mountain cave in the country. It is located at an altitude of 1,520 m a.s.l. on the southern side of the Ďumbier massif in Nízke Tatry.

Accessibility to the cave is possible from several directions. From the village of Bystrá towards Trangoška, and from there on foot for approximately 1 hour via a mountain trail to Chata M. R. Štefánika. The second route also leads from the village of Bystrá, but towards Srdiečko, where you will take the cable car to the Kosodrevina intermediate station, or all the way to the top of Chopok peak, and from there on foot to the aforementioned mountain hut. From the Liptov side, a hike on foot is possible from Liptovský Ján, or from the Jasná - Biela púť ski resort by cable car to Chopok and from there on foot to Chata M. R. Štefánika.

The cave is accessible from March to December on weekends, and during the summer holidays, it is open daily. In the months of January and February, it is completely closed. Before you head out for a trip here, check the admission fees and opening hours directly on the official website. Every entry must be reported and reserved in advance by phone or email.

The cave tour is possible on three routes. Route A, approximately 1 km long, can be completed even with children. It leads through the central 7th floor of the cave and consists mainly of rock paths and wire-rope ladder belays. For the more demanding, there are routes B and C, speleotrekking tours made accessible by the speleological guide service. These are accessible only to physically fit persons over 18 years of age. The first of them is slightly less demanding and takes approximately 2 hours. The second one is for advanced visitors with climbing experience, as the truly demanding cave terrain is exposed almost continuously. It lasts approximately 3 hours.

Kozie chrbty, a relatively small limestone massif with deep folding, is 2 km long and 300 m wide. In its depths, it hides an intricate tangle of corridors across a total of (so far known) 14 floors and 2 parallel branches. The currently mapped length of the cave is 19,885 m, with a depth of 324 m. The largest underground space is located directly under Chata M. R. Štefánika. It is the well-known Bystrický dóm hall with a volume of up to 52,500 m³. It is located on the 7th floor, at a depth of 180 m.

An interesting feature is a huge find site of bat bones, the age of which is estimated at 6,000 years. It is precisely to this largest bat burial ground that the cave owes its name. Besides these, however, bones of small rodents, martens, brown bear, and goat were also found on the edges.

Another interesting feature of the cave is the occurrence of volcanic rocks from the Cretaceous period. These are folded into the limestone formation and appear in several cave passages. You can recognize them by their reddish-brown or green color. White-pink agate is also present here.

Since 2001, the cave has been declared a national natural monument. Its environment is cold, humid, and dark, but it has a beneficial effect on the upper respiratory tract. Its average temperature reaches 3.5 °C, while some of its parts do not exceed a temperature of more than 1 °C year-round. For this reason, warm clothing and, of course, suitable sturdy footwear are required to enter the cave.

To become a real cave explorer for a moment and visit what is probably one of the oldest caves in Slovakia. Are you still hesitating? There is nothing to think about, but we recommend taking enough time for the tour and not rushing. Are you used to arriving at a ski resort only to see a single lift, a slope, a snack bar, and a wooden ticket booth? Upon arriving in Jasná, you will feel as if you are in Disneyland. A multitude of slopes that seem to tower above you rather than lie in front of you. Restaurants, hotels, snack bars, numerous cable cars, and thousands of skiers everywhere. You will not experience such an atmosphere anywhere else but on the northern side of Chopok.

Grandeur. That is exactly what will come to mind at the first sight of this massive ski resort, which boasts 45 km of ski slopes. You will park your car in one of the many high-capacity parking lots and head for your tickets. The ticket offices are the first thing you will come into contact with, and they are located precisely at Biela púť.

In addition to them, you will find a disco, bars, restaurants, and many accommodation facilities here. A variety of hotels and guesthouses are located directly on the Biela púť slope. You can look forward to typical mountain architecture and a pleasant environment. Outside your windows, you will see the cable car moving and crowds of satisfied skiers.

At Biela púť, you will find a chairlift and a blue slope suitable even for complete beginners. If you are standing on skis for the first time, your steps will lead you here first. The slope is regularly maintained, and artificial snowmaking is a matter of course. It is equipped with artificial lighting, so you can start looking forward to night skiing. You walk out of the hotel, put on your skis, and you are already skiing.

At the end of Biela púť, there is an interesting attraction, Twinliner. It is a kind of train that functions just like an elevator. Its carriage can hold up to 50 skiers and will transport you directly to the funitel, the cable car leading to the peak of Chopok. From Biela púť, you can also get to Luková, at an altitude of 1,670 meters above sea level. You will be transported there by a classic 4-seater chairlift, one of many in the entire resort.

Biela púť is the starting point for the entire ski resort, and every skier heading to the slopes of Chopok will pass through it. The slope itself is ideal for beginners; just choose a ski or snowboard school, and professionals will teach you all the secrets of every good skier in a few days.

There is probably no better location to stay for skiing in Jasná. There are many hotels for the demanding directly at Biela púť. If you want to save money and prefer to ski more, choose from the range of tourist hostels. Despite the fact that you will be at an altitude of over 1,100 meters above sea level in the middle of the mountains, you will not be bored. It is only a short walk from the hotels to the bars or to one of the most famous discos. Entertainment in Jasná at Biela púť does not end on the slope.

When people hear "Chopok", most answer without hesitation "Jasná". However, this third-highest peak (2,023.6 m a.s.l.) of the Nízke Tatry mountains offers much more than just great skiing on perfectly groomed slopes. It is located in the geomorphological sub-region of Ďumbierske Tatry, on the main ridge at the border of the Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions, on the boundary between the districts of Brezno and Liptovský Mikuláš.

Chopok is often just a transfer station before continuing a hike further. The most common steps of hikers lead from it to Ďumbier and to Chata M. R. Štefánika, subsequently continuing through Králička to the Čertovica pass. The main peak is located above Kamenná chata pod Chopkom. However, it also has a second, secondary peak located west of the rotunda.

Right near it is a meteorological station. Its measurements, which began on December 1, 1954, provide interesting information not only to tourists. Thanks to it, we know that the average annual temperature at the summit reaches only -1.1 °C. The maximum temperature of 22 °C was recorded on August 9, 2013, and the minimum of -31.5 °C has not been surpassed since January 17, 1963. Moreover, Chopok is considered one of the windiest places in Slovakia. The average wind speed reaches 9.3 m/s, and on April 14, 1988, a speed of up to 51 m/s was measured, which translates to more than 180 km/h!

Chopok is a sought-after peak by tourists in both summer and winter, which it owes not only to its breathtaking panoramic view, but also to its great accessibility. Hikers can comfortably ride up right below the summit by cable car from both the northern and southern sides. The aforementioned circular view captures many mountain ranges of central and northern Slovakia, the Nízke Tatry peaks, and of course, the Vysoké Tatry. If the weather favors you, you will even see the Chočské vrchy, Poľana, Veporské vrchy, Stolické vrchy, Oravské Beskydy with Pilsko and Babia hora, Oravská Magura, Krivánska Fatra, Vtáčnik, and even the Hungarian Kékes.

The youngest tourists love Chopok thanks to the dragon Demián. An impressive statue by the artistic blacksmith Vladimír Eperješi depicts the most powerful guardian of the Demänová treasures. His eyes are inlaid with semi-precious stones, and his scales are hand-forged. His heads spew both fire and smoke, and in the throat of one of them is a copper bell. When you ring it, you will summon good luck. Whether it is a myth or a fact, it is at least worth a try. Embark on a family adventure along the Dračia cesta na Chopok (Dragon Trail to Chopok) and help the little dragon find a happy ending to the dragon story. Slide Park is the perfect place for a family trip, where kids can burn off energy and parents can enjoy the views of the Nízke Tatry mountains. What else to experience nearby

Jasná is a gateway to a world of adventures. If you have little cyclists at home, the nearby Bike Park offers trails for both beginners and daredevils. For families who prefer hiking, the Nízke Tatry mountains are an endless source of tourist trails. And if you happen to encounter bad weather, the underground kingdom of Demänovská jaskyňa slobody or the ice cave is a great alternative that never disappoints.

Jasná offers accommodation for everyone, whether you are looking for luxury or a cozy mountain setting. Hotels directly by the slopes will offer you a view of the mountains in the morning and cable cars just a stone's throw from the door. However, if you are looking for peace and quiet, Demänovská Dolina is full of apartments and traditional cottages that are perfect for evening relaxation after a day spent in nature. Many of them feature their own wellness facilities, which is a great reward after a whole day in the fresh air.

Jasná is the largest ski resort for miles around. But if you think a beginner skier won't find a place to ski here, you are mistaken. It offers something for everyone. For professionals, freeriders, ski mountaineers, intermediate skiers, but also for beginner skiers and families with small children. If you belong to the last category, pay attention.

A short distance from the ticket office where you buy your passes, there is a modern and beautiful hotel. In front of it stands the valley station of the cable car. It will certainly catch your eye immediately upon arrival; its black and orange design is simply unmistakable. And it is thanks to it that you will discover the high-quality slopes of Otupné.

The cable car will comfortably take you from an altitude of 1,141 meters above sea level to nearly 300 meters higher, where an approximately 2 km long slope begins. The cable car, named after the adjacent hotel, Grandjet, is fast, comfortable, and thanks to the orange glass, you will feel like it is beautifully sunny outside. Even when it is cloudy.

The slope from Brhliská to Otupné is marked in blue, so it is suitable for beginners or children. It is sufficiently wide, and you do not have to worry about the safety of your little one. A few meters of the slope are red, of intermediate difficulty, but this section can be bypassed by a gentler slope. Moreover, you will find ski schools in the resort, and if you do not dare to go alone, you can head to Otupné with an experienced instructor.

In addition to the modern cable car, you will also find short lifts here. They come in handy when you don't want to return all the way down to the parking lots. At Otupné, there is a unique view of the massive rocky ridge of the Nízke Tatry mountains, the Chopok peak itself, and, of course, the Derešský kotol basin.

Until now, it may have seemed that if you are a more experienced skier, you have no reason to go to Otupné. Wrong. The first reason is the breathtaking natural scenery all around, and the second is the local Snowpark. It is the real deal for adrenaline seekers. You will find high snow ramps, jumps, rails, and various obstacles here. From small jumps for beginners to several-meter-long jumps for the best. If "freeride" is your middle name, you will let loose like a small child at Otupné.

Jasná offers slopes for every group of skiers, and Otupné is an example of this. It is focused mainly on beginners and absolute extremists who love adrenaline. Are you in one of these groups? Then you would want to stay somewhere, because one day at Jasná is not enough. Trust us! Čertovica lies directly on the ridge of the Nízke Tatry. You do not have to worry about having to wander down a deserted road somewhere in the forest. Čertovica is located directly on the main road connecting the Liptov and Horehronie regions. You can reach it from Brezno or Liptovský Hrádok. It is situated in a forest environment, while its higher parts are characterized by dwarf pine. You will feel as if you are in truly big mountains.

The ski slopes are located right by the main road, just a short walk from your parked car. The ski resort extends at an altitude of 900 to 1,145 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Čertova svadba. Northern orientation, relatively high altitude, and on top of that, the climatic conditions of the Nízke Tatry. Only one thing follows from this: plenty of snow.

The Čertovica ski resort is one of the larger resorts. It should be said that beginner skiers should look elsewhere instead. You will find only a single blue, least demanding slope here. The other slopes are intended for intermediate and advanced skiers who will truly enjoy themselves here. They will find approximately 12 km of slopes, 5 ski lifts, and a variety of hills. These are primarily red, meaning they are intended for the widest range of intermediate skiers. However, even the best skiers will find plenty to enjoy, with several black sections prepared for them.

The Čertovica ski resort offers skiing throughout the entire winter. The snow cover remains on its slopes from mid-December until mid-April. In the Liptov village of Dúbrava, nestled in the picturesque nature of Nízke Tatry, the Guardian of the Forest (Strážca lesa) stands guard over the entrance to the forests and mines in Dúbravská dolina. It is a wooden statue soaring to a height of 5 m. To movie fans of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it resembles the walking tree character "Ent", while to fans of Guardians of the Galaxy, it recalls the character "Groot". It was created by a pair of English artists.

Rooted to the ground, the statue is made almost entirely of wood, only subtly supported by a metal structure. It symbolizes Perun, the Slavic god of thunder and lightning. In his hand, he holds a burning torch, and his feet are covered with stones. The path leading to him is well-trodden, so you certainly will not get lost. It is quite possible that during your walk you will meet families with strollers or seniors. The terrain is easy and the route is relatively short.

In the past, mining activity flourished in Dúbravská dolina, leaving many residents with health consequences, but above all, it was responsible for one of the largest ecological disasters in Slovakia in 2019. The wooden guardian stands here as a sort of barrier between nature and man. He is a protector of both the forest and nature. He defends them and stands here as a warning to anyone who would consciously want to destroy them.

Not far from the wooden guardian are the famous Dúbravské bane, which were strategic for Czechoslovakia in their time. They were the highest-altitude antimony mines in Central Europe. Mining in them completely ceased in 1992. An old mining train stands at their entrance. However, its condition is just as dilapidated as the surrounding area of the mines. Nevertheless, a beautiful spruce forest leads to them.

Vrbické pleso, which adorns the Demänovská dolina, is the largest natural lake in the Nízke Tatry. This body of water at an altitude of 1,113 meters above sea level is of glacial moraine origin and thus resembles tarns in the Vysoké Tatry. At its deepest point, a depth of 8 meters was measured. The lake has been a nature monument since 1975 and is currently protected by the fifth, i.e., highest, level of protection.

The walk starts in the village of Demänovská Dolina at the Jasná - Biela Púť signpost, and it is easy to park nearby. A yellow-marked trail leads from the signpost to the tarn, taking only about 5 minutes to reach it. Around the lake, which measures 115 meters in length and 62 meters in width, runs an undemanding hiking trail. Walking it takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on your walking pace or how long you sit on the benches and admire the photogenic mountain surroundings. It is an ideal walk for families with children. Information boards inform tourists about the origin of the tarn as well as its fauna. Benches by the lake are a matter of course, and several gazebos stand here as well. Vrbické pleso does not have to be your final destination. Interesting hiking trails start right from it. It is possible to climb to the Rozhľadňa na Ostredku or to Krakova hoľu. Get out of the car, put on your ski boots, step into your skis, and head straight to the slopes. Jasná is exceptional because it offers long kilometers of trails of all difficulty levels. If you are an intermediate skier, you will find plenty to enjoy in Záhradky. Alternatively, you can warm up and stretch your muscles here before tackling steeper slopes. In Záhradky, you will mostly find medium-difficulty (red) slopes, but there is also a blue, least demanding trail.

One ski lift and two modern chairlifts lead directly from Záhradky. Equipment with windshield covers protecting against the wind is taken for granted. One of the chairlifts leads to Rovná hoľa, a quieter yet even more beautiful corner of Jasná. The second one takes you directly into the heart of the resort, to Priehyba, at an altitude of 1,342 meters above sea level. This is where the famous funitel funicular/cable car is located, leading all the way to the top of Chopok. From Záhradky, you can reach an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level with just a single transfer. Another chairlift runs above Záhradky, coming from the previous park-and-ride car park at Lúčky.

If you head from Záhradky to Rovná hoľa, you have a choice of two slopes to ski back down. Intermediate skiers will choose the red one, and beginners the blue one. If that isn't enough for you, you can extend your descent all the way to Lúčky. The cable car to Priehyba is for more demanding skiers. From there, you can return to Záhradky via either two red slopes or one black slope for the most experienced skiers.

Down at the bottom of the slopes, a full range of facilities awaits you: snack bars, a restaurant, a rental shop, a ski school, and a sports clothing store. In short, complete equipment and services. And remember, Záhradky is just an entry point to the resort center, where even more awaits you.

One of the most popular mountain ranges for skiers in Slovakia is undoubtedly Nízke Tatry. And where is there the most snow if not directly on the ridge of the mountain range? Here, for example, you can take a look at the Čertovica pass, which spreads at an altitude of up to 1,238 meters above sea level.

Where is the Čertovica pass located? It forms a natural connection between Liptov and Horehronie. A well-known road passes through it, connecting Liptovský Hrádok with Brezno. There are many slopes at Čertovica, but we will focus on the Ski resort Čertovica STIV. The ski resort is intended for less demanding skiers who are primarily looking for peace and affordable skiing. Despite the fact that the total length of the slopes is only approximately 1 km, all groups of skiers will come into their own here. The resort is served by a pair of ski lifts. The shorter one serves complete beginners; this slope is marked in blue. It is intended for beginners or children.

The longer lift offers wide opportunities for sports activities for a variety of skiers. The central slope is marked in red, so intermediate skiers will come into their own on it. Čertovica is equally suitable for lovers of off-piste skiing. A freeride zone runs parallel to the central slope here.

Thanks to the fact that the Ski stredisko Čertovica STIV ski resort is located at a high altitude ranging between 1,238 – 1,381 meters above sea level, it cannot complain about a lack of snow. And if there happens to be a bit less snow, count on a well-thought-out artificial snowmaking system at Čertovica that will take care of the snow cover throughout the winter.

Čertovica STIV is also inclined towards day-trippers or those who want to hit the slope for just a few hours. A ski school, regularly groomed slopes, and refreshment options at a snack bar are a matter of course at the resort.

If you decide to visit, you can enjoy Čertovica in ways other than just on skis. The attractive environment of Nízke Tatry mainly attracts hikers. Right along the ridge of the mountain range, you can head east towards Kráľova hoľa or west towards Ďumbier, for example. Our country is full of many castles. Famous ones, lesser-known ones, and those that are completely unknown. For many, Ľupčiansky hrad is certainly quite unknown as well. Despite the fact that it lies only a few kilometers from Banská Bystrica, not many tourists know about it. In general, the southern side of the Nízke Tatry mountains is overlooked. Try to change that, set off to Slovenská Ľupča, and you will see that you will not regret it.

A wooden hillfort originally stood on the site of the present castle. In 1241, the Tatars invaded our territory and conquered the old wooden castles. The stone ones resisted their attack. The builders of Ľupčiansky hrad were inspired by this and built a modern stone castle in 1250.

The castle had a significant defensive position and protected access roads to well-known mining towns. The most famous are certainly Banská Bystrica and Banská Štiavnica. An interesting fact is that the castle was damaged by an unconventional natural element. Fires were common at that time, but the castle in Slovenská Ľupča was damaged by something else, an earthquake. This struck the region in 1443 and severely damaged the castle above the Hron river itself. The repairs were followed by several reconstructions, the most significant of which was carried out by Pavol Rubigall, who started it in 1572.

After this period, the castle experienced exceptionally frequent changes of its owners. It was regularly conquered, plundered, and constantly ruled by someone else. From 1707, an Austrian military garrison as well as a prison were located here. From the second half of the 19th century, the significance of the castle declined. It was engulfed by fire and served other purposes. There was an orphanage, a school, a reformatory for juveniles, or a vocational school. However, the castle is a national cultural monument and is in a well-preserved state. It hides several surprises, one of which is an escape tunnel from the bottom of the castle well, which is more than 60 meters deep. Another unique feature is the linden tree growing in the lower courtyard. Locals call it Korvínova lipa, and its age is probably 700 years, making it one of the oldest linden trees in Central Europe.

At present, also thanks to an extensive reconstruction, the castle is in exceptionally good condition. In the 1990s, it was managed by the Regional Monuments Board, and since 2002, it has been owned by Železiarne Podbrezová. Thanks to this unconventional owner, the castle got a second chance. Significant reconstruction work took place, and the castle was made accessible to the public.
