Hrad Ostrý kameň

Hrad Ostrý kameň

Buková

In the western part of the limestone ridge of Záruby, above the village of Buková, near Smolenice, lies the ruin of Hrad Ostrý Kameň. An interesting feature is that this castle is the highest-altitude castle in the Malé Karpaty. The castle earned its name because it was carved into a rock of the same name. You will find this historical gem at an altitude of 576 meters above sea level, which guarantees magnificent views of the Malé Karpaty and the Záhorská nížina.

In the past, the castle served as a royal border fortress to protect the western border of Hungary and the so-called Czech road. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1273. Initially, the castle was royal property, but in 1366 the king donated it to Nicholas of Szécsi, passing it into private ownership. Over the centuries it belonged to many owners, including Duke Stibor of Stiborice, the Keglevich family, the Thurzo family, the Forgách family, and many others.

In 1704, a major Kuruc battle took place around the castle, during which the castle was heavily damaged. By that time, the Czech road already led through Bratislava, and the castle lost its function. The then owners of the castle, the Pálffy family, moved their seat to the town of Moravský Svätý Ján and left the castle to its fate.

Currently, the castle ruin is intertwined with the limestone bedrock, and you can view the remains of former palace walls, outbuildings, and bastions. You can reach the castle along a marked hiking trail that leads from the village of Buková. You can also make a trip for discovery from Smolenice, this route is the shortest and leads across the highest peak of the Malé Karpaty,  the Záruby peak. Along the way, you can stop at Čertov žľab or Občasný vodopád, which, however, flows only during favorable water conditions.

After a half-day hike to Hrad Ostrý Kameň, treat yourself to some relaxation and have a picnic by the nearby Vodná nádrž Buková reservoir. Among other interesting places you can visit in the immediate surroundings are definitely Smolenický zámok, the ruins of the Molpír hillfort, or Jaskyňa Driny. The Dolné Považie region is one of the most beautiful areas of Western Slovakia, so do not hesitate and book your stay today. A rich offer of accommodation near the ruin of Hrad Ostrý Kameň can be found on our page accommodation in Buková.

Do not miss an interesting cave when visiting the well-known region of Malé Karpaty. The massive rock overhang, approximately 30 m long, was formed on a tectonic fissure caused by the activity of underground waters and frost weathering. Take a look at the space of Deravá skala, which is about 15 m high and was once inhabited in the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Middle Ages.

If you decide to set out on a 2 km route to the cave, you need to be really attentive when walking through the green forest so that you don't miss the cave. Access to the cave is easy. From the village of Plavecký Mikuláš, you can reach it following the green marker and later via an educational trail through Mokrá dolina. This unique natural monument is also the site of several archaeological finds.

Near Deravá skala, there is another unique sight. The cave Tmavá skala, located approximately 130 m away at an altitude of 425 m a.s.l., is not accessible to the public. Mokrá dolina and both caves are part of the important Kršlenica nature reserve, which is known for its rare flora, fauna, and rock formations and crags. You can combine your visit to the cave with an ascent to the peak of Čierna skala. You can reach an altitude of 662 m a.s.l. along a less demanding route after approximately 4.5 km from the Jahodník recreational center. A shorter route with a length of about 3.5 km leads from Plavecký Mikuláš, but it involves a steeper climb. Let yourself be charmed by the interesting rock outcrops of Malé Karpaty.

Do you enjoy discovering natural or underground beauties? Then do not miss the nearby Jaskyňa Driny. In the village of Smolenice, located approximately 20 minutes away, you will find a small yet all the more interesting cave. Plavecký hrad

Plavecký hrad

Plavecké Podhradie

Hiking enthusiasts are always thrilled by the opportunity to enjoy unique views. One such view presents itself when visiting Plavecký hrad, which currently belongs among ruins. However, you will be captivated by its grandeur and the indescribable atmosphere of this place.

You can find the castle on an outer limestone hill of the Malé Karpaty mountains, located above the Záhorská nížina lowland, directly above the village of Plavecké Podhradie. The castle is open to the public and the hike up to it is not demanding. Families with smaller children and seniors in good physical condition can handle it as well. The path leads to the castle from the village of Plavecké Podhradie. A few meters before the local manor house, past an apartment building, you will reach a tree alley. Walking through it, you can enjoy the chirping of birds and the charming scent of trees. Behind the alley is a parking lot from which you will spot a marked blue hiking trail along a forest path. After approximately 25 minutes of walking, it will lead you to your destination.

The castle was built after the Mongol invasion of our territory. The exact year is not known, but it is estimated to have been in the 1250s or 1260s. Originally, it served a guard function. It was possible to see all the way to our border with the Czech Republic from it. Thanks to oversight of the surrounding castles, Plavecký hrad could exchange signals with them in case of danger. Between 1579 and 1584, one of the first printing houses in Slovakia operated at the castle. Under the hands of the Protestant writer and church dignitary Peter Bornemisza, calendars, Bibles, a hymnal, and other printed materials were published here. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance fortress with lower courtyards. Unfortunately, it has been abandoned since the 17th century. Conservation work is currently underway here. During its tour, you can notice the preserved outer masonry of the extensive fortification to this day, as well as a prominent cannon bastion and the masonry of the palace from the central tower. You can also admire the stone Renaissance gate.

A legend or myth is associated with almost every castle. This one is no exception. It is rumored that the castle was the setting of a story where a new Trojan War was supposed to break out. In the second legend, a woman does not dominate, but rather a man named Pavol, who became an orphan due to an unfortunate hunting accident, but the king took him under his patronage. On his deathbed, the king granted him his kingdom.

Has your imagination already started working, and would you also like to come and visit this place? Plan a trip here and discover other points of interest in the surrounding area. On the same hill, there is also a hillfort, Plavecká jaskyňa cave, and the remnants of the walls of a vanished monastery. In the village, there is an opportunity to look at a Renaissance manor house. You don't have to travel to the sea to enjoy a desert; the Slovak one is called Šranecké piesky. Popular places for summer recreation include the Buková water reservoir. Other accessible caves in Western Slovakia include the beautiful Jaskyňa Driny.

Exploring such a wonderful region is worth it for more than just one day. So that you don't have to travel back to your homes and can change the atmosphere of your domestic environment, we recommend booking accommodation near Plavecký hrad. The offer is not limited, and it is up to you whether you choose privacy-providing chaty Plavecké Podhradie cottages, or if budget-friendly ubytovanie v súkromí Plavecké Podhradie private rentals will suffice for you. We will be happy to help you.

Jaskyňa Driny

Jaskyňa Driny

Smolenice

When spending your vacation in the Malé Karpaty mountains or near Smolenice, famous for its romantic chateau, take a trip to Jaskyňa Driny. The cave is among the smaller ones. However, what it loses in size, it makes up for in the beauty of its underground world.

Jaskyňa Driny is characterized by one unique feature. It is the only accessible cave in Western Slovakia. You will find it northeast of the town of Trnava, just one kilometer from the aforementioned Smolenice. You can reach the cave via a comfortable forest road; at its end, prepare to conquer the final 100 stairs. Near the cave, you will find several information boards about the origin of the mountain range, the cave, as well as the animals living in the surrounding forests. After the climb, you can refresh yourself at the adjacent bar with an original name Speleobar.

The first mentions of the cave date back to 1866, when Prussian troops camped near its entrance during the Austro-Prussian War. They did not aim to explore the cave; the first discovery attempts began only in 1920. Interestingly, one of the explorers was also Štefan Banič. Is this name familiar to you? It should be. He is the person who invented the parachute. He explored access to the cave together with his son Ján, who discovered the entrance 9 years later, in 1929. The cave was opened to the public in 1934. Today, the cave is open every day except Monday. On the internet, you can also find the exact entry times depending on whether you decide to visit during or outside the tourist season.

The length of the accessible route is 450 meters, and the cave tour will take you just over half an hour. The elevation gain inside is 10 meters, so you will hardly feel it, while the temperature represents a pleasant 7–8 °C. In the winter months, you will even warm up under the earth's surface.

Inside the cave, on a small area, there are many karst formations, such as sinter pools or curtains with characteristic serrations, typical only for Jaskyňa Driny. The cave was created thanks to a system of fissures that water expanded over thousands of years. In it, you will find mostly narrow corridors and only a few larger cave spaces, or halls. One of them is the Sieň Slovenskej speleologickej spoločnosti hall. Despite the small area of the cave, it is extremely popular with bats. As many as 11 species of these animals have found their home here.

The Malé Karpaty mountains are extremely attractive to tourists in themselves. There are numerous hiking trails, Smolenický zámok, Hrad Červený Kameň, the Jahodník recreational center, and Jaskyňa Driny itself. Thanks to these attractions, it will be no problem to find accommodation in one of the nearby villages. The closest ones are Horné Orešany and Smolenice. Here, demanding clients will find hotel accommodation with all the necessary comfort and care. Family accommodation in guesthouses is also available, or you can rent a chalet just for yourself for your stay, from which you can set out anytime on an expedition into the underground of Jaskyňa Driny.

Molpír

Molpír

Smolenice

If you find yourself in the vicinity of Smolenický zámok and you like nature, we have an excellent tip for a trip for you. Above the village of Smolenice, in the Malé Karpaty mountain range, the hill Molpír rises to a height of 354 m above sea level. Here, over an area of 14 hectares, lie the remnants of a hillfort from the Early Iron Age. Engage your children in exploration and set out with them on an easy hike combined with discovery and fun.

These ruins were first mapped and explored by the Smolenice priest Sándorfi in 1890. It is estimated that the hillfort originated approximately in the 6th century BC. This unique fortification was built from dry-stacked stone with reinforced embankments and a wooden structure. The entire area can be divided into three spaces, two outer baileys and an acropolis, which were protected by ramparts. Dwellings in the upper outer bailey and the acropolis were constructed using log building techniques, with walls plastered with clay and floors laid with flat stones. Heating was provided by simple hearths as well as domed ovens.

During its heyday, approximately 800 people lived in the hillfort. The inhabitants engaged in craft production, the manufacture of weapons and knives, casting of bronze vessels, production of stone querns, and they also produced threads and fabrics. Archaeologists found remnants of hand-carved bones with spiral decoration, numerous spindle whorls, loom weights, and ceramics at the hillfort site. An exhibition of these finds can be found in Múzeum Molpír.

The educational trail Smolenický kras, which begins near the Smolenice church, will lead you right to the hillfort. While ascending Molpír hill, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Smolenický zámok. Part of the trail includes information boards and two replicas of historical log cabins.

In the surroundings of Smolenice, there are many interesting places worth seeing. On your wanderings, definitely visit the gorgeous Smolenický zámok and discover the underground world of Jaskyňa Driny as well. After a day full of experiences, treat yourself to a rest and stay in a cozy cottage or use the services of local guesthouses. Upon entering, the fountain in the courtyard of the manor house will catch your eye. The manor house is considered the most beautiful example of rural Neoclassical architecture in Slovakia. Its owners at the time, the Brunswick family, made not only the manor house famous, but also the village of Dolná Krupá through their artistic collections of paintings, books, and minerals. The manor house even featured a theater building. The Brunswicks were lovers of art and music. Ludwig van Beethoven himself taught their daughters to play the piano right inside the manor house. Due to his non-noble origin, the composer stayed in a garden house rather than with the nobility in the main house. The Ludwig van Beethoven Memorial is part of the garden. During the tour of the manor house, you will also take a look into the music museum.

The Brunswick family, and later the Chotek family, was the last to experience the great glory of the manor house. This opulent residence, where high society used to gather, began to decline from the time of World War I. The aforementioned park once enjoyed great popularity for its flora. Among the last to reside in the manor house, until the mid-20th century, was Countess Maria Henrietta Chotek, who created a magnificent rose garden in the park that was the largest in Central Europe. The original park also featured three lakes. Unfortunately, only the original torso is preserved today. The manor house has undergone an extensive reconstruction, which delights not only the residents of Dolná Krupá.

Take advantage of this beautiful setting and surroundings, which offer opportunities for walks and outdoor activities. Come for a walk to the nearby Trnavské rybníky protected area, which is known for birdwatching over 200 species of birds. Looking for a summer refreshment? Budmerice

Come and enjoy the beauty of Budmerický kaštieľ manor house, which is located in the village of Budmerice and ranks among the landmarks of this village. This is not only thanks to its stunning appearance, but also due to the wonderful 19th-century English park. Every year, it is visited not only by locals, but also by foreign tourists.

This beautiful manor house was built by Count Ján Pálffy together with his wife. The count was a hunting enthusiast, so the manor house originally served mainly for these purposes. The manor house itself draws from several architectural styles. It was inspired mainly by the French Renaissance. Although the exterior resembles older artistic styles, the interior was adapted to the living requirements of the modern era of that time. An interesting feature is that it includes a dumbwaiter, central heating, and numerous staircases.

Locals experienced unique feelings even back then during a stroll through the English park. In its vicinity, Count Pálffy had a chapel built dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. A legend is tied to the manor house, in which the count fell in love with a French comtesse. He wanted to transform his two residences into the style of French châteaux and then marry her. By the time he succeeded, the young lady was reportedly already married.

After the count's death, the manor house turned into a center of social life, where his son Pavol organized various gatherings and hunts. After World War II, the manor house was looted, subsequently passed into the hands of the state, and is currently managed by the Ministry of Culture. During opening hours, you can view its permanent exhibition here. Can you imagine what it would be like to spend a night here? Unfortunately, that is unrealistic for now, but you can easily book accommodation near Kaštieľ Budmerice.

In Budmerice, you will admire this amazing building. Know that you can also expand your trip by visiting Hrad Červený Kameň castle. You can go horseback riding with your children at Margitin dvor. Kláštor Katarínka

Kláštor Katarínka

Dechtice

On the border of the municipalities of Dechtice and Naháč, approximately 20 kilometers north of the regional town of Trnava, a historical treasure is hidden in the forests. Kláštor Katarínka or also the Kláštor sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej once belonged to the Franciscans, who inhabited this area in the 17th century. If you head here and expect a grandiose structure, you are mistaken. Only a ruin of the monastery and a reconstructed tower remain here, where during opening hours you will receive an engaging commentary from guides.

Not even many local residents know this monument. Deeply hidden, the extensive Baroque monastery complex was founded in 1618 on the spot where a Gothic chapel with a cemetery once stood long ago. According to legend, Saint Catherine appeared here to the young count and hermit Ján Apponyi. Malé Karpaty are thus worth visiting not only for hiking, but also for this pilgrimage site.

In the 17th century, you would meet several monks and novices from the Archdiocese of Esztergom here. After numerous attacks, whether they were estate uprisings or Ottoman incursions, the monks managed to repair the destroyed monastery every time. However, based on the decree of Joseph II in 1786, the monastery was abolished and began to fall into disrepair. Today, when you arrive at this place, you will feel a special magical atmosphere and you will find only the ruins that remained here.

An interesting feature of this place is that the tower located here was added to the monastery later. Its height reaches 30 meters, which means approx. 5 floors. The tower served as a bell tower. On its corners were four statues of saints from the Franciscan order. The current state is that you can visit here and enjoy the views from the newly built additional floor. You can see as far as the highest peak of the Carpathians, which is Záruby. In good weather, it is possible to see Trnava.

Getting to the monastery is not very difficult. Even though it does not lie on sought-after tourist trails or main roads, you will certainly reach it on foot. From Naháč it is about 40 minutes, from Dechtice and from Dobrá Voda approximately an hour and twenty minutes. Perhaps the best way is to arrive on the Lesná železnička Katarínka, which also has a stop directly by the monastery. Keep in mind that accommodation near Kláštor Katarínka needs to be booked in advance so that you can enjoy your stay perfectly.

Dechtice are also sought after for the Lesná železnička Katarínka. The ride on it is great. In the surrounding area, you can also check out the Kaštieľ v Chtelnici, which was once visited by Maria Theresa. In the summer season, as a family, you can head to Kúpalisko Dobrá Voda and thus spend pleasant moments of life. If you would rather prefer adrenaline in your blood, you might raise it during a Vyhliadkový let Boleráz. Of course, after this experience, it is good to calm down in a room at guest house Dechtice. Lesná železnica Katarínka

Dechtice

Riding the Lesná železnica Katarínka is an experience for all age groups. It is located near the village of Naháč, but falls under the cadastre of the village of Dechtice. Feel free to plan a trip to Malé Karpaty and enjoy a wonderful time.

This narrow-gauge railway once served to transport timber from the surrounding forests directly to a chemical factory. At that time, the forests were the property of Count Jozef Pálffy. On his order, the chemical factory together with the forest railway was built during that period. Although it operated for only a few years, a group of enthusiasts from the count's lodge put it back into operation in 1997. The railway as such is not very long. Its track is approximately 600 meters long. As it was restored, it does not copy the exact rail layout of that time. Currently, it is situated more in the mountains, close to a tourist-sought attraction, namely Zrúcanina Kláštora svätej Kataríny. It is also on this basis that it received the name it boasts today. Riding a historical passenger train or watching a mining locomotive run with carriages of many types is an experience for everyone. You can see with your own eyes a limestone freight wagon, a passenger wagon with a brake.

If you decide to go for a ride on this railway, it is good to make sure in advance whether it is running. You can board at the depot and enjoy the charming romance of a clacking train with occasional warning signals along the narrow tracks. You might tire out your children so much that you will appreciate finding accommodation near Lesná železnica Katarínka.

In the village, in addition to the ride, you can view the aforementioned Zrúcanina Kláštora Katarínka. It is wonderful to soak in the atmosphere of the surrounding nature during a hike to this attraction in Dechtice. Families with older children might rather appreciate one of the manor houses located in the area. At Kúpalisko Dobrá Voda, not only couples can cool down their overheated bodies. Everything there is to do in the surroundings of Dechtice as well as all accommodation options in Dechtice can be found on our portal MegaUbytovanie.sk.

Hrad Červený kameň

Hrad Červený kameň

Častá

There are numerous castle ruins located in Slovakia. However, castles that still look today exactly as they did centuries ago are considerably fewer. If you want to catch a glimpse into the lives of the wealthiest people in the past and see how they lived and resided, you have a unique opportunity. Hrad Červený Kameň castle is extraordinarily well-preserved and still looks today exactly as it did centuries ago.

You will find the castle in the Malé Karpaty mountains. It lies near the town of Modra, known not only for its beautiful and rare ceramics, but also for traditional winemaking. You can reach it from the village of Častá or from the small village of Píla. Access to the castle is also suitable for the elderly and children. You can park or take a bus all the way up directly in front of the castle.

The history of the castle dates back to the first half of the 13th century. It was built by the Bohemian queen widow, Constance of Hungary. Later, the castle became a royal castle and formed an important defense line of the border zone. It stretched from Bratislava, through the entire Považie region, up to Žilina. The castle passed through the hands of several prominent families. It was ruled by Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, as well as the Zápoľský and Turzo families.

The new history of Hrad Červený Kameň began in 1535. The castle was acquired by one of the richest European families, the Fugger family. They embarked on a major reconstruction. They wanted to turn the castle into a defensive fortress to store goods. This merchant family began demolishing the castle while simultaneously constructing new parts. The present-day appearance of the castle originates precisely from this period. Four massive defensive bastions served to protect the fortress, and residential buildings were gradually added. The dominant feature is a huge residential wing. The castle turned into a modern and comfortable trading fortress with an excellent commercial location near Vienna.

The political situation was worsening, and the risk of Turkish and Tatar invasions was becoming increasingly acute. The Fugger family ultimately decided to sell the castle, and the Pálffy family became the buyers. They owned the castle from 1588 until 1945. A few years later, the castle was declared state cultural property. Today, you will find beautiful exhibitions of furniture, carpets, and traditional martial arts here. The largest carpet at the castle covers more than 44 square meters. The local library holds an incredible 14,312 books, and if you wanted to line them up in a single row, it would be almost 300 meters long. The castle is full of superlatives and former luxury, which you can see with your own eyes.

The Malé Karpaty are popular among tourists not only thanks to their beautiful nature. One of the greatest attractions is precisely Hrad Červený Kameň. Bazilika Panny Márie v Šaštíne

Šaštín - Stráže

Bazilika Panny Márie in Šaštín is one of the most important basilicas in Slovakia. It is located in the municipality of Šaštín – Stráže, which falls under the Senica district. Its construction began back in 1736, and the statue of the Virgin Mary itself was declared miraculous, which was also confirmed by a decree from the Vatican. This holy place is visited by several tens of thousands of pilgrims every year. It was also honored by a visit from Pope John Paul II himself and Mother Teresa.

This significant and magnificent place is also popular among tourists themselves. In addition to the basilica, the monument complex is formed by the former Pauline monastery, farm buildings, chapels, and the Pieta sculpture group. You can spend a pleasant family walk here. An interesting fact is that the entire construction of the basilica was initially financed by donations from common people and substantial contributions from Empress Maria Theresa. The entire church is decorated with beautiful and rare frescoes. The basilica went through many ups and downs during its existence. During World War I, for example, all the bells except the smallest one were stolen from its towers. In 1927, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was declared the patron saint of Slovakia, and this place thus won the hearts of additional admirers.

In addition to two traditional pilgrimages, which are the National Pilgrimage – the Feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows and the Whitsun Pilgrimage, various thematic pilgrimages are also beginning to emerge. These appeal to the general public and somehow try to reflect the times we live in. These include, for example, the Pilgrimage of Lovers, which is organized around Saint Valentine's Day. Furthermore, there is also the Pilgrimage of Expectant Mothers, which is always celebrated on Mother's Day. The Pilgrimage of Broken Hearts, the Bikers' Pilgrimage, and many others have also seen the light of day.

When you are already in the region of Biele Karpaty, it is definitely worth staying for a few days and exploring this lovely countryside. Cozy accommodation can also be found in the vicinity of Bazilika Panny Márie in Šaštín. Whether you choose a cottage, an apartment, or a guesthouse in Šaštín – Stráže, you will certainly not regret it. During the summer season, the whole family will enjoy refreshment at Prírodné kúpalisko Gazárka followed by horseback riding at Magic ranch Čáry. Children will surely love running along Náučný chodník Gazárka – Lásek, where they can also learn a thing or two.
