Malacká synagóga

Malacky

Malacká synagóga is beautiful and unique. These are the words that describe the Jewish building preserved in picturesque Záhorie. It rises into the sky right in the center of the town of Malacky, and you certainly cannot miss it. It boasts a rich history and immense architectural value. Currently, it is under the auspices of the Základná umelecká škola v Malackách (Basic School of Arts in Malacky). It serves as a concert hall, an art studio, and a venue for social and cultural events. You can only take a look inside with a guide, and the tour must be booked in advance.

The history of the synagogue is rich and dates back to 1755, when only ten Jewish people lived in Malacky. Only after 80 years, at the time when the municipality completed a brick house of prayer, was a rabbi finally assigned to the Jewish community. Unfortunately, the last rabbi of Malacky hanged himself. The reason was reportedly that he could not afford to feed his many children. The Jewish community suffered for another hundred years for this act because they were forbidden from having a rabbi. The Jewish community eventually sold the synagogue to the state, under whose administration it remains to this day.

The land for construction was donated to the Jewish community by the wealthy and prominent Spitzer family. The synagogue saw the light of day in 1887. The two-story building, with two majestic towers and the Tablets of Moses on the front facade of the building, instantly became a landmark of the town. The tablets remind the world of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew text. The facade boasts beautiful colorful motifs and ornaments that highlight the origins of the building. In the interior of the synagogue, the central element "ark" is preserved, and the niche for storing Torah scrolls has also survived in its original state. History is also captured by the entrance hall, the men's prayer room, and the women's gallery. In 1889, a huge fire, likely caused by lightning, engulfed the original synagogue. The Spitzer family extended a helping hand once again, financing and supporting the new construction of the synagogue so that within a year, everything was back as it was before that unfortunate event.
