Stropkov

Almost every child is thrilled if you take them to the zoo. It is a joy to watch their enthusiasm and beaming eyes as they explore domestic as well as exotic animals. If you find yourself in Stropkov, take them to the local ZOO Park. Alongside the children, their parents and grandparents will also be happy to refresh their knowledge of fauna. It is interesting to watch inquisitive monkeys, brightly colored parrots, or the mesmerizing gaze of exotic reptiles.

ZOO park Stropkov is located in the town center. Its origins date back to 1984, when parents and children began building the Stanica mladých prírodovedcov station at the Dom pionierov a mládeže. After 1990, the zoo transformed into Park zvierat n. o., established by the Mesto Stropkov. A relatively large number of animals is housed in 40 aviaries and enclosures. Even though the zoo is small, with its area and number of animals, it also fulfills an important function of saving the gene pool of our planet's animals. The grounds are complemented by plantings of various shrubs and trees that make the environment pleasant and enhance its appeal. Visitors feel very comfortable here.

The park is ideal for trips with children, who will find many fun attractions here, as well as the popular bufet Červená čiapočka snack bar. A major draw is also the petting zoo area, where children can enter the enclosure to feed or pet their favorite animals. Cute little goats or a donkey enjoy their affection and attention. Barrier-free access allows visits for mothers with strollers and physically impaired visitors reliant on a wheelchair.

Come and see the porcupine, guenons, nutria, or meerkats for yourself. Your children will be delighted by a small hedgehog and a resilient Shetland pony. The Indian peafowl and exotic parrots will charm you with their colorful plumage. From behind the glass of the terrarium, you can admire a cold python, a dangerous crocodile, and a colorful iguana. The ZOO park is open year-round seven days a week. In addition to admission fees, its operation is supported by nearly a hundred sponsors. By purchasing suitable feed at the ticket office, you too can contribute to its prosperity.

When you have admired all the beauty in the ZOO park, you can continue with your little ones to view the doll exhibition in Kaštieľ v Stropkove or, on hot summer days, visit the popular Letné kúpalisko Stropkov. Stropkov

If you visit the town of Stropkov and are a fan of skiing, the Lyžiarske stredisko Stropkov ski resort is one of your options for sports activities. The ski resort is located just a few hundred metres from the edge of town.

In the peaceful locality of Pod vlekom in the town of Stropkov, you can give your skis a full workout during the winter season. The winter skiing season is heavily influenced by the weather and lasts for a relatively short time—usually only during December and January. This is because the resort relies solely on natural snow. Children and beginner skiers in particular will enjoy the 400 m long small ski lift. Here, you can learn to ski perfectly and enjoy all the winter fun.

Unfortunately, you will look in vain for services such as equipment rental, a ski service shop, or a ski school. However, as long as you bring your own equipment, there is a good chance you will enjoy your skiing experience to the fullest. Neither the slopes nor the ski lift tend to be crowded, which is a great advantage for skiers seeking a tranquil environment.

For several years now, however, the ski resort has also been operating during the summer season. Young athletes and members of the local sports club in particular use the grass-covered and well-maintained slopes for their training sessions on special grass skis (caterpillar skis). Perhaps this style of skiing will catch on among regular visitors to the resort in the future as well.

Pleasantly tired from skiing, you can relax in the Vodný svet Aquaruthenia Svidník water park. Your little ones will certainly be captivated by a tour of the animals at Zoo park Stropkov. And if you are an admirer of naive art and want to learn more about the history of the town, be sure to include Kaštieľ v Stropkove manor house in your itinerary.

Perhaps thanks to the offer from our accommodation providers, you will experience wonderful moments full of sports activities and unforgettable memories with your family or friends. For such get-togethers, it is advisable to book accommodation near Lyžiarske stredisko Stropkov. Kaštieľ v Stropkove

Kaštieľ v Stropkove

Stropkov

Almost every inhabitant of Stropkov knows where the manor house is located. However, few people know that Kaštieľ v Stropkove is also a remnant of a 15th-century castle. Come inspect this interesting place for yourself and learn about its history.

The original castle was built by the Balick family, and later taken over by the Perényi family. However, its flourishment and development were brought about by the Pethő family of Gerse, who also lived in the castle. The first written mentions are found in the donation deeds of King Sigismund of Luxembourg from 1408. The original structure was shaped like a pentagon with five corner towers. The complex contained a palace and a parish church. The castle walls were built in the 16th century as a defense against Turkish raids. In 1814, a fire broke out in a blacksmith workshop, nearly destroying the castle completely. At the end of the 18th century, the castle walls ceased to serve their defensive function, and were therefore dismantled and used by local residents as building material. Over time, only the church and the manor house remained in the open space, undergoing several structural modifications over the centuries. Probably the most valuable part of this grand building is the Renaissance knights' hall, which was preserved thanks to the last reconstruction in 2006.

You will find the Gothic-Renaissance manor house on Zámocká ulica near the church. It is currently owned by the town. Directly in front of the manor house is a small parking lot for visitors, who can visit the museum and gallery exhibitions located on the ground floor and in the attic. In the aforementioned knights' hall, there is an exhibition dedicated to the history of the town and its surroundings. The gallery in the attic presents several dozen artworks by local native and painter František Veselý. Paintings with themes of ecology and physiology are as yet undiscovered, but artistically very valuable.

Your little ones will certainly be thrilled by the doll exhibition as well, and you will fondly remember the old days of childhood. Here you will find dolls dressed in various outfits from different places all over the world. Can you imagine a geography or literature lesson in such an exhibition? You say no? Visit this unique place and see the resourcefulness of the local guides for yourself.

After touring the manor house, we recommend continuing your trip to Zoo park Stropkov. Marked by fatigue, a refreshment at Letné kúpalisko Stropkov might come in handy. And then go see the unique Drevený kostolík sv. Paraskievy in the village of Potoky. History lovers will appreciate a visit to Múzeum Tokajíckej tragédie, while admirers of traditional architecture will gladly visit Skanzen ukrajinskej dediny in Svidník.

When visiting Stropkov, we recommend using the services of our accommodation providers. Feel free to book accommodation near Kaštieľ v Stropkove and enjoy the atmosphere of this town. A wide spectrum of accommodation facilities guarantees that you will be able to choose the exact stay that suits you. For one day it can easily be a room in a guesthouse Stropkov, and for longer stays, for instance, private accommodation. Do not hesitate to choose from our offer.

Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce

Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce

Šemetkovce

Will your steps lead you to Svidník in the near future? In that case, be sure to set aside time for a tour of Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce. This Greek Catholic sanctuary, dating back to 1752, is situated directly above the village of Šemetkovce and still serves its purpose to this day. From an architectural perspective, this church is considered one of the most valuable temples in Slovakia. The sacral gem is surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Šariš region, offering picturesque views and opportunities for trips.

The temple, built in the middle of the 18th century, was significantly damaged during military battles for Dukliansky priesmyk in 1944. The residents of the village were responsible for its restoration in 1945. The church has a three-part space and is dominated by three towers. The main tower is topped with a bulbous dome with a tambour and a metal cross. The other two turrets above the sanctuary and the nave have a conical shape, are covered with shingles, and are topped with wrought-iron crosses. The entire wooden structure is clad on the outside with vertical wooden boards and battens. Their restoration took place in 2001.

The interior is decorated with the remains of wall paintings. The Baroque wooden wall with icons dates from the second half of the 18th century. Some of the icons that form part of it have their origins in even earlier periods. The altar features antique columns and an icon of the Virgin Mary. Under the tallest tower, you will find a special narthex, historically called the babinec (women's porch). It served women who did not have the right to enter the interior of the sanctuary. A belfry with three bells also belongs to the church, built in the 19th century on the site of the original 18th-century belfry. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple.

In the surroundings of Šemetkovce, you can visit several rare sacral buildings. A wooden church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel can also be found in nearby Ladomirová. In the village of Krajné Čierno, you can visit Drevený chrám sv. Bazila Veľkého, and another interesting excursion destination is Drevený kostolík v Miroli. However, the list of wooden sanctuaries in this region is far from over. The village of Hunkovce can also boast its own wooden church, and you can visit Drevený kostol sv. Mikuláša in the village of Bodružal. And that is just a small sample of the architectural richness of the immediate vicinity.

If you would like to get to know the historical gems of Šariš more closely, be sure to book accommodation near Drevený kostol sv. Michala Archanjela Šemetkovce. We recommend choosing from the selection of accommodation in Svidník. The capacities of local cottages, chalets, and extremely popular modern apartments fill up very quickly. Drevený kostolík v Miroli

Drevený kostolík v Miroli

Miroľa

When visiting northeastern Slovakia, you will certainly notice beautiful wooden Greek Catholic churches. For the most part, these are unique, centuries-old temples that belong to the cultural and historical heritage of our country. You will find one such church in the picturesque village of Miroľa. This mountain village is located in the northern part of Nízke Beskydy at an altitude of 380 meters above sea level in the district of Svidník. It has a population of just over 50 residents.

The wooden Greek Catholic church Ochrany Presvätej Bohorodičky (Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God) has stood in the village since 1770. It was built on the site of an older 17th-century temple. During World War II in 1944, it was severely damaged, but local residents had it restored again. It features a characteristic log structure and a typical external and internal three-part division, symbolizing the Holy Trinity. The building rests on a shallow stone foundation wall. The tower, which has a column structure, emerges from the entrance narthex, behind which lies the nave. Liturgical objects discovered during the restoration of the cerkev (wooden church) are placed in the narthex. The third part of the church is the sanctuary. The tower, nave, and sanctuary each have an independent roof covering made of wooden shingles. Below their peaks, they terminate in double onion domes topped with iron three-armed crosses.

The iconostasis separating the nave from the sanctuary ranks among national cultural monuments. It is particularly interesting for its magnificent color scheme. Its architecture is four-tiered, with icons arranged across four levels. They date from approximately the same period as the church itself, estimated to have been created in the late 18th century. At the top of the iconostasis is a panel icon depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Below the cross, the Holy Mother of God and Saint John the Evangelist are portrayed. In the 1970s, the entire iconostasis was professionally restored. In the nave of the temple, you can also notice an interesting painting of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, the creation of which dates back to the 17th century. The temple can also pride itself on rare books written in the Church Slavonic language, which are used during church services.

The surroundings of the church are enclosed by a wooden fence with horizontally oriented logs. These are protected along the entire perimeter by a small canopy of wooden shingles. Entry into the grounds is through a small, open wooden structure. Near the church, you can relax in the shade created by the massive canopy of an old linden tree.

Exploring the beauty of this mountain village is certainly worthwhile. You can take a walk or a bike ride into the nature of Nízke Beskydy. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the news that the state nature reserve Miroľská slatina is located in the village, featuring halophytic vegetation and the presence of broad-leaved cottongrass. A slightly different atmosphere will be offered by a visit to Vojenský cintorín Hunkovce, which contains more than 3,200 graves of soldiers from World War II. Once snow falls and skiing conditions are ideal, you can head to the slopes of the ski resort Nižný Komárnik. A bit further from the village, you can enjoy year-round fun and relaxation at Vodný svet Aquaruthernia Svidník. Together with children, you can admire domestic as well as exotic animals at ZOO Park Stropkov.

If you feel that you cannot manage to try all the above-mentioned attractions in a single day, you are right. We recommend booking accommodation near Drevený kostolík v Miroli. As a family, you might choose a cottage in Miroľa as your temporary home. Couples mostly prefer accommodation with a balanced price-to-quality ratio. These criteria are met by Apartments Miroľa. Should you desire a slightly more opulent stay with options such as private wellness, take a look at guesthouses Miroľa. We will gladly help you select the best accommodation for you.

Drevený kostolík v Hunkovciach

Drevený kostolík v Hunkovciach

Hunkovce

If you come to the district of Svidník and choose the visiting and viewing of wooden churches as your destination, do not miss the picturesque village of Hunkovce. In the center of this village, on a hill right to the right of the main road, is located the Drevený kostolík wooden church.

The period of origin of this not very large church dates back to the 18th century, when it met the requirements of local believers. This specific wooden church is ranked among the rare sacral buildings of Eastern Christianity. Originally, people of the Greek Catholic faith gathered in it. During the tour of the church, you can notice the attributes of the era in which it was built. A simple style prevails here, because at that time the local residents did not have extra money. Yet, thanks to faith and hope in God, they managed to build such a beautiful and unique structure.

The attentive eye of a visitor to this church will not miss the division of the church into 3 parts. The first part is formed by an entrance hall, which was popularly referred to as the "babinec" (women's porch). This is located under the main tower. The entrance hall once served people preparing for baptism or repenting of their sins. From this part, you seamlessly reach the nave. This is the second part where ceremonies take place. From a symbolic point of view, it represents the pilgrim church, that is, Christians living on Earth. Among the most essential parts of the structure is the sanctuary, which, from a symbolic point of view, is intended to recall the Kingdom of Heaven. An interesting detail is its orientation to the north due to respecting the unevenness of the terrain. The sanctuary is usually separated from the nave by a high icon screen called an iconostas. In this church, however, the iconostas is missing. The church has been repaired several times. It was most damaged during World War II.

Three towers may also catch your eye. In one of them, bells were once hung. At the top of the tower, you can notice a double-barred Baroque decorative cross with a lunette. Beside the church, you can take a walk and enjoy the local scenery. You might also be intrigued by the graves that are placed right next to the church. During hot summer days, a walk through this place allows you to hide for a moment in the shade of the trees. Unfortunately, the former wooden fencing made of long trunks has not survived here. However, you can also be captivated by the wooden gate with a shingled roof. Raising your spirit during a religious service is unfortunately no longer possible here at present.

You can also explore the village to the fullest thanks to its other attraction. In addition to the wooden church, you can visit a burial site with more than 3,100 graves of soldiers from World War II. It is designated as the Vojenský cintorín Hunkovce military cemetery. After a continuous layer of snow falls, you can ski on the slopes of the Nižný Komárnik ski resort. A day full of sports activities can also be concluded with an insight into history. This is reminded to us even today by Dukliansky priesmyk, which played a huge role in the battle of 1944. Today, it is listed among national cultural monuments. You will not go swimming directly in the village. Therefore, it is good to take advantage of swimming options in the Svidník district. For example, we can recommend the tourist-popular Vodný svet Aquaruthenia Svidník.

Do not forget that it is good to find accommodation in Hunkovce in advance, from where you will explore this region conveniently. Ideally, it would be best for you to book accommodation near Drevený kostolík Hunkovce. You can choose from an offer of beautiful cottages in Hunkovce on our portal. Or would you rather choose more affordable private accommodation in Hunkovce? In case you need any assistance, do not hesitate to contact us.

Drevený kostolík sv. Kozmu a Damiána

Vyšný Komárnik

The history of the Svidník district is closely intertwined with the horrors of World War II. However, besides the Pamätník na Dukle memorial, the village of Vyšný Komárnik is also known for being home to the rare Greek Catholic Drevený kostol sv. Kozmu a Damiána church. The first church from 1700 was destroyed during World War I. The second, current church stands on the site of the original sanctuary and was consecrated in 1924. An interesting feature of this church is the tall windows in the nave and the sanctuary.

The church is dedicated to two saints, St. Cosmas and St. Damian, who served as selfless physicians in Syria. They are the patron saints of physicians and surgeons, and their feast day is celebrated in the Greek Catholic and Orthodox Church on November 1 and July 1. This remarkable sacral building is three-part, three-roomed, and three-towered, with three metal crosses. It stands on a stone foundation, with the entrance located on the west side.

The large entrance hall with a square tower is protected on the outside by vertical boards. In the tower, where one bell from 1909 was originally located, four bells are now placed, which even today regularly call believers to religious services. The dominant feature of the entire church is the four-row iconostas and an altar with a central image of the New Testament Holy Trinity. In the years 2005–2008, the church underwent an extensive interior and exterior reconstruction and is currently listed as a national cultural monument.

The Pamätník Česko - Slovenského armádneho zboru memorial was built by the government of the Czecho-Slovak Republic in 1949. Its author is the architect Josef Grus. The monument consists of a tall tower-like structure in the shape of a truncated pyramid and a columbarium. Earth from all the battlefields of the Czechoslovak army is deposited in the columbarium. Its portal is decorated with reliefs depicting the combat path of the army. The memorial, together with the ceremonial hall, reaches a height of 28 meters. In its original design, the memorial included a statue of a Czechoslovak soldier paying tribute to his dead comrades-in-arms and the state emblem. These were removed in 1964, and the memorial was supplemented with a bronze sculpture by the artist Ján Kulich.

A colonnade leads to the memorial, featuring bronze tablets with the names of 1,256 members of the Czechoslovak army who fell in the Battle of the Dukliansky priesmyk pass. The monument closes the southern side of the military cemetery, where 565 members of the corps are buried. A military open-air museum forms part of the Duklianske bojisko complex. It was opened to visitors in 1959, showcasing combat equipment, artillery firing positions, military unit bunkers, and a command post. Its part is the Údolie smrti, featuring installed military equipment. The northeastern section of the complex consists of the Aleja Hrdinov Dukly. Busts of 15 heroes of the Soviet Union army are placed here.

In addition to the monumental memorial, part of the Duklianske bojisko is also the granite monument Rozpuknuté srdce. It is located by the road, about 200 meters from the state border. It was built at the site of the tragic death of a general whose car ran over a landmine. About 100 meters further, a granite sculpture depicts a soldier's hand disarming an anti-tank mine. Right at the state border stands an impressive 52-meter-high lookout tower. It was built on the site of the original observation post of the army commander and offers a panoramic view of the battlefield on both the Slovak and Polish sides. In the entrance hall, you will find an audiovisual facility providing more detailed information about the Carpatho-Dukla Operation.

If you pass through the Šariš region, be sure to stop at this unique place paying tribute to the heroes of our history. You can combine the tour of the memorial and the open-air military museum with a visit to the wooden church of sv. Kozma a Damián and the magnificent wooden church in Nižný Komárnik. The surroundings offer a whole spectrum of such wooden sacral monuments. If you wish to visit them all, we recommend booking accommodation near the Pamätník na Dukle. You can choose from accommodation in Vyšný Komárnik or from the offer of accommodation in Svidník. On our portal, you will surely find the right facility for your active stay with good accessibility to local attractions.

Dukliansky priesmyk

Dukliansky priesmyk

Vyšný Komárnik

Dukliansky priesmyk is an almost entirely ordinary mountain pass at an altitude of 502 m a.s.l., which, however, became completely extraordinary thanks to the Karpatsko-duklianska operácia operation. It is located between the Kýčera and Brdo peaks, in the northern part of the Laborecká vrchovina highlands, on the Slovak-Polish border. The pass was named after the nearby Polish town of Dukla.

The history of the pass, however, is not ordinary at all; quite the opposite. The area of this Vojenské prírodné múzeum museum is often called the "Údolie smrti" (Valley of Death) and recalls one of the bloodiest chapters in our history. The battles that took place here during World War II claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Soviet and Czechoslovak soldiers. Upon entering this tragedy-marked valley, you pass two tanks entangled with each other, symbolizing the superiority of the Red Army over fascist evil.

The dominant feature of the pass is the 28 m high Pamätník československého armádneho zboru monument, built in 1949 based on the design of architect Jozef Grus. The monument includes bronze plaques with the names of 1,265 fallen soldiers belonging to the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. The monument, together with the military cemetery, forms an extensive military museum. In its area, visitors can view several dozen pieces of heavy military equipment, including aircraft, restored artillery firing positions, bunkers in the surrounding forests, and other military monuments. In the summer months, a 52 m high lookout tower is also accessible to visitors, built right on the spot where the observation post of Ludvík Svoboda once stood.

Dukliansky priesmyk is also known among tourists because the Cesta hrdinov SNP trail begins at these places. It is the most important and at the same time the longest (more than 700 km) hiking trail across Slovakia, stretching from Dukliansky priesmyk to Bradlo at Štefánikova mohyla. Walking it takes between 26 and 28 days.

You can reach Dukliansky priesmyk from the town of Svidník, via an asphalt road through Ladomirová, Hunkovce, Krajná Poľana, Nižný Komárnik, and Vyšný Komárnik. The pass is, among other things, an important junction of hiking trails. The red-marked route from Porubské sedlo to the east along the state border meets here with the red marker along the Cesta hrdinov SNP to the village of Medvedie, as well as two other hiking trails connecting from Poland.

If we have enticed you and you are planning to visit Dukla and the surrounding hiking trails, we recommend spending several days here. Find accommodation near Dukliansky priesmyk, so you can head out to explore the surroundings and take longer hikes right in the morning. Inspiration for a quality stay can also be found on the pages accommodation Kapišová, ubytovanie Ladomirová, or accommodation Hunkovce. The beautiful surroundings invite you to put on your hiking boots and set off on wanderings or explore the interesting history of this beautiful region.

Hanušovce nad Topľou

We invite you to a tour of one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Baroque manor houses in Slovakia. Kaštieľ v Hanušovciach nad Topľou manor house is hidden in the wonderful greenery of the adjacent park. Originally a Renaissance two-story building from the 17th century, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century. The facades of the manor house are lined with corner towers terminated by bell-shaped domes. The picturesque little town of Hanušovce nad Topľou is located in the Prešov Region, in the Vranov nad Topľou district. An attentive visitor will discover as many as two manor houses here. In the larger one, which is under the founding jurisdiction of the Prešov Self-Governing Region, there is a museum and an archaeopark. It is definitely worth visiting and looking at the exhibitions located within it.

There are only few museums in Slovakia with original period furniture. Within the local exhibition Dobovo zariadené interiéry a zabudnutý rod Dessewffy, you have a unique opportunity to peek into the bedroom and salons, where you can admire the beauty and delicacy of small objects, historical furniture, art objects, and paintings from past centuries. Will you be charmed by the richly decorated wedding cap, the magnificent tile stove, or hunting trophies and taxidermy mounts? Or will it be the pseudo-Baroque salon furnished in the Art Deco style? Perhaps you are among visitors who will be more appealed to by Historická expozícia. In it, you will learn about the fates of medieval castles in the Vranov region, the cholera epidemic and uprisings, as well as the fates of people affected by both World War I and World War II. Especially impressive are the period uniforms and displays of deactivated ammunition. Prírodovedecká expozícia will appeal particularly to visitors interested in the beauty and mysteries of our nature. Mesozoic ammonites, the Tertiary sea floor, fragments of extinct Quaternary mammals, as well as exhibits of current animals of our forests will captivate not only young explorers and help them understand how the flora and fauna of our floodplains in the Topľa and Ondava river basins evolved. The treasures of human settlement in this area are documented by the museum's Archaeological Exhibition - Archaeopark. It contains items from the Paleolithic era all the way to modern times. Will you be captivated by the Neolithic Venus figurine, the hand axe, the Celtic fibula, or will it be the numerous animations and engagingly processed virtual reality? In the Renaissance annex of Malý kaštieľ, you can admire Etnografická expozícia capturing the traditional folk culture of the region. A wooden cradle, flax linen production and other crafts, or a traditionally furnished peasant room will bring closer to you the hard life of people who earned their bread by their own calluses and sweat of their brow.

In the small shop, visitors have the opportunity to buy various souvenirs and publications created by the museum staff. If the atmosphere of the manor house complemented by rich stucco decoration has appealed to you, you have the opportunity to rent the premises and hold a family celebration, lecture, or concert here. Or could it be straight a wedding ceremony and reception in a magnificent style? You will look back at unforgettable and luxurious photographs from the manor house and park with nostalgia for many years to come.

After a demanding morning in the museum, you will certainly find it refreshing to cool off at Kúpalisko Ragleng swimming pool or you will enjoy horseback riding at Ranč Breziny ranch in nearby Pavlovice. Hrad Čičva

Hrad Čičva

Sedliská

In terms of the number of medieval castles, Slovakia ranks among the leading countries in Europe. One such castle is Hrad Čičva (also known as Čičava) in the village of Sedliská. It is located on Mernícka pahorkatina, which is part of Beskydské predhorie, above the local area of Podčičva. The castle is now just a ruin, but it is well worth planning a trip to visit it.

You can reach Hrad Čičva, which stands at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, directly from the village. The walk from the bus stop to the castle hill takes approximately 10 minutes. Motorized visitors have a parking lot available right below the castle. Due to the easy nature of the route, this attraction in Sedliská is accessible to all age groups. Wandering through the castle ruins, the romantic setting, and the beautiful views will be appreciated not only by history enthusiasts, but also by younger generations.

The castle is first mentioned in a deed of donation from King Stephen V dating back to 1270, which the monarch granted to the nobleman Raynold along with the surrounding estate. The castle protected an important trade route above the pass known as Porta Polonica (Polish Gate), leading from south to north. The core of the castle consisted of a trapezoid-shaped inner area on the castle hill, which was built in the 15th century by the owners at the time, the Rozgonyi family. The complex was surrounded by a stone wall. Opposite the core, near the entrance gate, stood a palace. The most remarkable feature of the castle is the bergfried. This tongue-twister of a term was used to describe the main round castle tower, which mostly served as the last refuge for the castle's defenders. It is rarely found in the architecture of Slovak castles.

The castle was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. During its history, an outer bailey was added, followed later by an artillery bastion. An interesting fact is that in 1523, the castle became the property of the "bloody countess" Elizabeth Báthory, who married her husband Ferenc Nádasdy in 1573 in nearby Vranov. In 1610, their daughter Catherine received the castle as a dowry. In 1711, the castle fell into the hands of Imperial General János Pálffy without a fight. His successor, General Lanken, ordered its demolition. It has been a ruin ever since.

After visiting this fascinating place, it is worth moving on to nearby Vranov nad Topľou, where the remarkable sacred monument Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie is well worth your attention. On hot summer days, a refreshing dip at Kúpalisko Vranov nad Topľou will surely hit the spot. If you are one of those who enjoy viewing the world from horseback, you can visit Ranč Sahiba. Adrenaline enthusiasts might enjoy driving fast go-karts at the T1 Ring go-kart track in Vranov nad Topľou.

The region offers a wide array of attractions and options for unique day trips. You will surely fall in love with it and get to know it better if you stay here for a few days. In that case, you will be happy to relax with our hosts, who offer various types of accommodation facilities. Right in Sedliská, you can book perfect accommodation near Hrad Čičva. Or perhaps apartments in the village center will charm you more? You might be intrigued by castle legends told by our hosts during dinner at private accommodation in Sedliská. Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Vranov nad Topľou

The Roman Catholic Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie is the most valuable and oldest historical monument in the town of Vranov nad Topľou. Since 2008, the church has carried the designation "minor," making it one of thirteen basilicas in Slovakia with this significant honorary title, which comes directly from the Pope. This modestly looking historical monument came to the awareness of Christians worldwide thanks to a miraculous event that occurred in the region. A rare historical icon of the Virgin Mary by an unknown author shed bloody tears before the eyes of local people. This happened in 1708.

The miraculous painting of the Virgin Mary executed on canvas with oil colors was subsequently transferred to the church. On September 8, 1708, the church was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and ever since, it has been drawing Marian pilgrims from all over Zemplín every year on September 8. Another miracle is the event from 1718 when a fire broke out in the church, but the painting remained undamaged. The church thus became an even more significant pilgrimage site, as evidenced by the Decree on the Establishment of the Pilgrimage Site dated June 29, 1999.

The church was originally built in 1441 by the Franciscans as a monastery church. After their departure from the town, the evangelicals took over the administration of the church from the Franciscans and managed it from 1540 to 1672. Subsequently, in 1672, the spiritual administration of the church was taken over by the monastic order of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, the so-called Paulines, with whom the basilica is associated to this day. The cult of the Mother of God is characteristic of the Paulines, as they managed many Marian shrines. In the territory of Slovakia, their administration also included, for example, the pilgrimage sites in Šaštín and Marianka near Bratislava. After almost a century of activity in Vranov, the Paulines had to leave the monastery by order of Joseph II, and their order moved from Slovakia to Poland. The monks returned back to Vranov only after more than 200 years.

From an architectural standpoint, the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie ranks among late Gothic monumental sacral structures. Although you wouldn't say so at a glance from the outside, the church interior is a magnificent Baroque work from the first half of the 18th century and appeals to every visitor. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary of Vranov depicting the Mother of God holding the child on her right forearm is located in the center of the altar superstructure. The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are also other, smaller altars in the basilica. The side ones are dedicated to St. Paul the Hermit, after whom the Pauline Order is named, and St. Pope Clement I. The fourth altar, located on the northern side of the church, is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, the martyr of the seal of confession. The great reverence of the Vranov Paulines for this saint is confirmed by the reliquary with his remains in the interior and the sculptural group in the exterior of the church, included in the state list of cultural monuments.

Also preserved in the Vranov basilica is a very valuable Baroque-Rococo collection of liturgical objects consisting of a monstrance, chalice, ciborium, and pectoral cross. This unique liturgical set is the work of the most famous personality of Baroque goldsmithing in Slovakia, Ján Silaši, and rightfully belongs on the list of national cultural monuments. A precious testimony to the existence of Baroque sculpture in Eastern Slovakia are the perfect woodcarving creations from the workshop of Jozef Hartman, which adorn the altars and the pulpit. The atmosphere of the distant past is complemented by wall paintings by the prominent Czech Baroque painter J. L. Kracker.

If the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie has caught your interest and you would like to find out more, a guided tour can be requested from the Rímskokatolícky farský úrad Sever, which is seated in the parish building of the former Pauline monastery. Although the monastery building is of a later date, originating from the 17th century, it is likewise a historical monument worth visiting. Right from a distance, you will be charmed by the entrance portal, which can boast the attribute of an architectural landmark of artistic significance.

Book your accommodation near the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie and come enjoy Vranov nad Topľou and its surroundings. After visiting the historical monuments in the town, whose name is derived from a crow (vrana), head out into nature and discover the Slanské vrchy. Set out on foot, by bike, or in winter comfortably on cross-country skis. You will be thrilled not only by the experiences the region offers, but also by the exceptional accommodation options in the Prešov Region.

Renesančný kaštieľ Humenné

Humenné

In the center of the town of Humenné, you will find a monumental Renaissance-Baroque mansion also known as Humenský zámok. Built on the site of a former medieval water castle, it is a national cultural monument and at the same time the seat of a museum. If you visit eastern Slovakia, do not miss the town of Humenné and the mansion, which is its dominant landmark.

The former residence of the Drugetovcov family, built in the Renaissance style in the 14th century, was rebuilt in the Baroque style at the beginning of the 19th century under the ownership of the Andrášiovcov family. The residence was modified according to their own ideas, giving it a uniform architectural form. An English and French park were built additions to the mansion. Several rooms acquired fireplaces and the ceilings rich decorative stucco. At the end of World War II, Humenský zámok was damaged by a fire that affected the roof. Its repair took place only after almost 20 years. Thanks to this as well, we can admire the spaces of the mansion and the artistic and historical monuments located within it today.

In Humenskom kaštieli, you will find the Vihorlatské múzeum with its permanent exhibitions. The museum is dedicated to artistic-historical monuments as well as natural history exhibitions. The last opened permanent exhibition is the Sacral Exhibition with the chapel of Panny Márie, which you can view in the original premises of the mansion. At the same time, the museum prepares a wide range of events and exhibitions for its visitors throughout the year.

So do not hesitate and visit one of the largest and most expansive mansions in Slovakia. In the area of the mansion, you will find an adjacent park with a fountain, where you can conclude your tour with a pleasant walk. If you are tempted by history and ancient times, do not miss the exhibition of folk architecture and living in Skanzene Humenné.

A great tip is daytime or evening sky observation at the Vihorlatskej hvezdárni Humenné. In the astronomical observatory, you will find the second-largest telescope in Slovakia. Thanks to low light pollution, it is worth coming precisely for the evening observation of a sky full of stars. Skanzen Humenné

Skanzen Humenné

Humenné

Skanzen Humenné, also known as Expozícia ľudovej architektúry a bývania belonging under Vihorlatské múzeum, is located almost directly in the town center of Humenné. The open-air museum is situated near the magnificent Renaissance manor house Humenský zámok, which houses the aforementioned Vihorlatské múzeum.

On an area of 4 hectares, visitors will find a total of 16 buildings that together form a complete picture of the distinctive architecture of the East Carpathian region. These are log houses furnished with period furniture, agricultural buildings, but also various rarities, including a wheelwright's, potter's, and blacksmith's workshop, a watermill, and a well. All these objects, together with period craft and agricultural tools, create a perfect picture of life and housing in Zemplín in times long past, which our generation knows only from stories.

The tour begins in a log house without an agricultural section, which represented a typical homestead of a poor farmer with a modest interior. This served only to cover basic living needs. It was built in Klenová before World War I and relocated to the open-air museum in 1977. The building has three spaces, consisting of a pantry, an entry hall, and a room. Its walls were made of hewn beams. Their corners are joined by log construction and coated with clay. An interesting feature is the residential house combined with a mill house, which originates from Vyšná Jablonka. The mill house immediately catches visitors' attention with the large wooden mechanism of the mill with a hopper and two stones, one rotating and one stationary.

The centerpiece of the exposition is the authentic Greek Catholic wooden Chrám sv. Michala Archanjela from Nová Sedlica. It dates back to 1764 and is unique partly because it was originally built without a single metal nail. The breathtaking Baroque tiered iconostasis dates from the mid-18th century, with some icons even originating from the 16th century. The small church stands on an elevated spot, as traditions once recommended. Even back then, it was meant to express the fact that it was the abode of God, to whom all residents turned with humility, from youth to the elderly, from farmers to woodcutters. Everyone sought both love, happiness, and understanding within it.

Village architecture and the local color of that time could not leave out the blacksmith's workshop. For demonstration, the open-air museum in Humenné features a workshop relocated from Nechvaľová Polianka, whose inventory exactly corresponds to its purpose. The basic equipment of the workshop consisted of a hearth with a blacksmith's bellows. Various types of pliers, hammers, punches, and an anvil could not be missing. It also includes a shelter for shoeing horses with horseshoes made right in that workshop. Near the workshop, there is a shadoof well, a log granary with a cellar, and a hayrick "oboroh".

As is a good tradition in most open-air museums, various cultural events and demonstrations of folk crafts take place here as well. These mostly happen in the center of the open-air museum, where a small ampitheater is located. Take part in them as well and experience that special atmosphere. Book your accommodation on our page accommodation Humenné and you will be just a stone's throw away from the open-air museum.
