Hvezdáreň Michalovce

Michalovce

Would you like to witness a supernova explosion yourself, fix your gaze on bright stars or mysterious planets? Hvezdáreň v Michalovciach invites you to public astronomical observations. These take place always during clear weather on Fridays. So accept their invitation and come with a telescope in the dome to wander after the mysteries that attracted such giants of astronomy as Mikuláš Kopernik already in the 15th century.

The observatory is located on the Hrádok hill in Michalovce in the building of Moussonov dom. This institution actively participates in the expansion of knowledge in the field of science. The observatory is part of the Zemplínske kultúrne centre. You will recognize it from afar by two domes located on top of the structure. The smaller one has a diameter of 3 m and the larger one 5 m. In the smaller one, there is a reflecting telescope and seats for visitors.

The observatory also has a multi-purpose lecture hall. Movement games for children or so-called learning through play tend to take place here. A separate part consists of the space for screening educational films and observing Perseids by visitors. The surroundings of the observatory are nicely landscaped. Part of the area is paved with interlocking paving stones, and another part is covered with a maintained lawn. In the evening hours, the area is pleasantly backlit. An interesting educational trail and a relaxation zone for visitors are built in the area.

Hvezdáreň v Michalovciach organizes very popular evening sky observations for its visitors during designated Friday hours. You just need to wait for dusk. In addition, during the day you can attend an interesting lecture or discussion and observe the photosphere of the sun through a special filter. The observatory also expands its program by acquainting visitors with the projection of the night sky, the movement of planets, or galaxies. The observatory is also a sought-after place for its large-format video productions in the field of astronomy, astronautics, ecology, and natural sciences. During the holidays, they also organize a 6-day summer astronomical camp for children and astronomy clubs during the school year. The observatory also organizes various competitions for schools under the name Vesmír očami detí, Čo vieš o hviezdach, and others. For those of you who are collectors of tourist stamps, we have good news. The observatory has its own stamp, which you can purchase here.

Full of experiences from observing the sky, you can finish your day, for example, with soothing swimming at the Krytá plaváreň v Michalovciach indoor swimming pool or visit the exhibitions of the Zemplínske múzeum v Michalovciach. Horse riding lovers will probably rather prefer a visit to Hipocentrum Hôrka. In case you are lovers of tourism and history, make a wonderful trip to the romantic Viniansky hrad.

The Zemplín region offers many interesting attractions in addition to a beautiful environment and nature. In case you want to catch several of them during your visit, we recommend booking accommodation near Hvezdáreň Michalovce. Will you be appealed more by comfortable apartments Michalovce, or will you prefer cottages Michalovce? That depends solely on your choice and financial possibilities.

Trebišov

The landmark of Trebišov is a charming Baroque-Neoclassical manor house that was once a magnificent residence of the noble Andráši family (Andrášiovci). The town of Trebišov, the center of Southern Zemplín, is located in the southwestern part of the Východoslovenská nížina lowland. Part of the region is the world-famous Tokaj wine region, offering first-class quality wines. The Trebišov district offers many options for recreation and relaxation, whether you set off for a walk through nature reserves of floodplain forests, fruit orchards, or the charming hills of the Slanské vrchy mountains. However, we invite you to take a tour of a museum that will tell you about the rich and interesting history of this picturesque district.

Manor house and its history

The manor was built on the remains of the local castle Parič by Count Imrich Csáky in 1786. The Andráši family inherited the residence in the first half of the 19th century and rebuilt the property in Neo-Renaissance style, without neglecting the extensive garden. The new owners transformed it into a beautiful French park with a rich representation of exotic tree species. The Andráši family also had a Neo-Gothic family tomb built in their park, as was the tradition among upper classes in the 19th century. At the beginning of the First World War, the furnishings of the manor house were transported to other Andráši residences in Budapest and Tiszadob. After the Second World War, the manor served until 1978 as a hospital with a polyclinic, and after a subsequent reconstruction, the Vlastivedné múzeum museum (established in Sečovce as early as the 1950s) moved into the premises of the former manor house in 1981. Since 2012, the museum bears a new name, Múzeum a Kultúrne centrum južného Zemplína v Trebišove. The institution specializes in the history of agriculture and Tokaj viticulture, collecting and displaying many historically valuable items presenting the history of the Trebišov district.

Expositions

The museum offers exceptionally interesting expositions that will delight all age groups and enthusiasts of various fields. Whether you are interested in traditional crafts, the history of agriculture, tractors, archaeology, folk clothing, or like to enjoy a golden drink, you will be thrilled by everything you can see in the complex. For example, the exposition of the history of agriculture in Eastern Slovakia documents the development of this industry from the Neolithic period to the present day. Machinery fans will appreciate the exposition of the steam plowing set or the exposition of agricultural machinery and mechanisms from the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Have you ever wondered how grain is processed? In that case, you will certainly be interested in the exhibition documenting the history of grain threshing from flails to modern combine threshing. If you want to learn more about the traditions of Southern Zemplín, you cannot miss the exposition presenting traditional disappearing and extinct crafts of Zemplín, especially rope making, blacksmithing, and wheelwrighting.

Artistic souls will enjoy the exposition of folk wood carving and sculpture of Zemplín, or the exhibition presenting folk clothing of Southern Zemplín from the first half of the 20th century. On a different note, the exhibition Andrášiovci na Trebišovsku reveals the history and manors of the noble family. And finally, one of the museum's greatest treasures is hidden in the cellar space. Located there is an exposition of Tokaj viticulture and winemaking in Slovakia. It is complemented by a unique archive of Tokaj wines, presenting producers of this unique beverage and collecting new samples. If the rich selection of permanent expositions were not enough for you, you will certainly be captivated by one of the thematic exhibitions of fine arts, phillumeny, ethnography, history, numismatics, or art. After visiting the exhibitions, you can indulge in a tasting of Tokaj varietal, quality, and selection wines at the Tokajská vináreň u Andrássyho wine cellar.

Exclusive attractions

If you are planning a group visit or a teambuilding event, the museum offers original attractions. Sign up for rope weaving and test your skills in rope making, an ancient Zemplín craft. The museum staff are Slovak record holders in this discipline, on August 12, 2011, they made a rope 103 meters long, thereby obtaining a certificate from the book of Slovak records. Another activity available for group bookings is home butter production in a butter churn, so-called churning. This was once a traditional activity in Zemplín households. At the end of your visit, you will have a unique and delicious gift, a knob of butter made from fresh homemade milk. Couples in love will also be pleased to know that the manor house, in its charming chambers combining past and present as well as art and tradition, offers wedding ceremonies as well as wedding and group photography sessions. As the manor house was completely renovated between 2015 and 2016, it has regained its ancient charm and 19th-century romance.

Pamätník Oslobodenia a víťazstva

Pamätník Oslobodenia a víťazstva

Košický Klečenov

The Pamätník Oslobodenia a víťazstva is a monumental memorial to one of the largest battles of World War II in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia. The impressive sculpture group with commemorative exhibitions is situated directly on the site where tens of thousands of soldiers fell, in the Dargovský priesmyk pass, on the road from the village of Košický Klečenov to Dargov. It is located on a mountain pass at the foot of the Ploská peak, in the main ridge of the central part of the Slanské vrchy mountains, near the source of the Trnávka river. It reminds passersby not only of the dark weeks of national history, but also of the heroism of the soldiers who laid down their lives for the liberation of this territory.

The Dargovský priesmyk pass is a silent witness to 7 weeks of fighting between the Red Army and the Germans for the liberation of Slovakia. The retreat of German troops finally occurred on January 18, 1945, and the day after, the city of Košice itself was liberated. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the bloody battle, the Pamätník Oslobodenia a víťazstva was unveiled in the pass. In addition to the pompous sculpture group, it includes an exhibition of liberating tanks, an anti-aircraft gun, and a memorial hall of battle glory. The author of the sculpture is the artist, academic sculptor Vojtech Löffler from Košice.

An interesting part of the memorial site is an educational trail leading directly through the battlefield locations. Exhibitions of military equipment, reconstructed bunkers, and military positions will transport visitors back to the times of World War II. You can embark on this unique military expedition on foot, by bicycle, and even on cross-country skis. Several hiking trails, a red cycling route, and, in winter, a cross-country skiing trail lead through the area. The road leading through the pass is an important connection between the Zemplín region and Košice.

Are you planning a holiday trip around eastern Slovakia? Be sure not to miss the opportunity to stop at a memorial site honoring the heroism and courage of the liberators of Slovak territory. You can combine a historical excursion with a trip to the nearby Herliansky gejzír, the ruins of Hrad Bačkov, and you will certainly also visit the remains of Slanecký hrad and enjoy the beautiful views from Rozhľadňa Čerešenka.

Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie

Vranov nad Topľou

The Roman Catholic Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie is the most valuable and oldest historical monument in the town of Vranov nad Topľou. Since 2008, the church has carried the designation "minor," making it one of thirteen basilicas in Slovakia with this significant honorary title, which comes directly from the Pope. This modestly looking historical monument came to the awareness of Christians worldwide thanks to a miraculous event that occurred in the region. A rare historical icon of the Virgin Mary by an unknown author shed bloody tears before the eyes of local people. This happened in 1708.

The miraculous painting of the Virgin Mary executed on canvas with oil colors was subsequently transferred to the church. On September 8, 1708, the church was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and ever since, it has been drawing Marian pilgrims from all over Zemplín every year on September 8. Another miracle is the event from 1718 when a fire broke out in the church, but the painting remained undamaged. The church thus became an even more significant pilgrimage site, as evidenced by the Decree on the Establishment of the Pilgrimage Site dated June 29, 1999.

The church was originally built in 1441 by the Franciscans as a monastery church. After their departure from the town, the evangelicals took over the administration of the church from the Franciscans and managed it from 1540 to 1672. Subsequently, in 1672, the spiritual administration of the church was taken over by the monastic order of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, the so-called Paulines, with whom the basilica is associated to this day. The cult of the Mother of God is characteristic of the Paulines, as they managed many Marian shrines. In the territory of Slovakia, their administration also included, for example, the pilgrimage sites in Šaštín and Marianka near Bratislava. After almost a century of activity in Vranov, the Paulines had to leave the monastery by order of Joseph II, and their order moved from Slovakia to Poland. The monks returned back to Vranov only after more than 200 years.

From an architectural standpoint, the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie ranks among late Gothic monumental sacral structures. Although you wouldn't say so at a glance from the outside, the church interior is a magnificent Baroque work from the first half of the 18th century and appeals to every visitor. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary of Vranov depicting the Mother of God holding the child on her right forearm is located in the center of the altar superstructure. The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are also other, smaller altars in the basilica. The side ones are dedicated to St. Paul the Hermit, after whom the Pauline Order is named, and St. Pope Clement I. The fourth altar, located on the northern side of the church, is dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, the martyr of the seal of confession. The great reverence of the Vranov Paulines for this saint is confirmed by the reliquary with his remains in the interior and the sculptural group in the exterior of the church, included in the state list of cultural monuments.

Also preserved in the Vranov basilica is a very valuable Baroque-Rococo collection of liturgical objects consisting of a monstrance, chalice, ciborium, and pectoral cross. This unique liturgical set is the work of the most famous personality of Baroque goldsmithing in Slovakia, Ján Silaši, and rightfully belongs on the list of national cultural monuments. A precious testimony to the existence of Baroque sculpture in Eastern Slovakia are the perfect woodcarving creations from the workshop of Jozef Hartman, which adorn the altars and the pulpit. The atmosphere of the distant past is complemented by wall paintings by the prominent Czech Baroque painter J. L. Kracker.

If the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie has caught your interest and you would like to find out more, a guided tour can be requested from the Rímskokatolícky farský úrad Sever, which is seated in the parish building of the former Pauline monastery. Although the monastery building is of a later date, originating from the 17th century, it is likewise a historical monument worth visiting. Right from a distance, you will be charmed by the entrance portal, which can boast the attribute of an architectural landmark of artistic significance.

Book your accommodation near the Bazilika Narodenia Panny Márie and come enjoy Vranov nad Topľou and its surroundings. After visiting the historical monuments in the town, whose name is derived from a crow (vrana), head out into nature and discover the Slanské vrchy. Set out on foot, by bike, or in winter comfortably on cross-country skis. You will be thrilled not only by the experiences the region offers, but also by the exceptional accommodation options in the Prešov Region.

Hrad Čičva

Hrad Čičva

Sedliská

In terms of the number of medieval castles, Slovakia ranks among the leading countries in Europe. One such castle is Hrad Čičva (also known as Čičava) in the village of Sedliská. It is located on Mernícka pahorkatina, which is part of Beskydské predhorie, above the local area of Podčičva. The castle is now just a ruin, but it is well worth planning a trip to visit it.

You can reach Hrad Čičva, which stands at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, directly from the village. The walk from the bus stop to the castle hill takes approximately 10 minutes. Motorized visitors have a parking lot available right below the castle. Due to the easy nature of the route, this attraction in Sedliská is accessible to all age groups. Wandering through the castle ruins, the romantic setting, and the beautiful views will be appreciated not only by history enthusiasts, but also by younger generations.

The castle is first mentioned in a deed of donation from King Stephen V dating back to 1270, which the monarch granted to the nobleman Raynold along with the surrounding estate. The castle protected an important trade route above the pass known as Porta Polonica (Polish Gate), leading from south to north. The core of the castle consisted of a trapezoid-shaped inner area on the castle hill, which was built in the 15th century by the owners at the time, the Rozgonyi family. The complex was surrounded by a stone wall. Opposite the core, near the entrance gate, stood a palace. The most remarkable feature of the castle is the bergfried. This tongue-twister of a term was used to describe the main round castle tower, which mostly served as the last refuge for the castle's defenders. It is rarely found in the architecture of Slovak castles.

The castle was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. During its history, an outer bailey was added, followed later by an artillery bastion. An interesting fact is that in 1523, the castle became the property of the "bloody countess" Elizabeth Báthory, who married her husband Ferenc Nádasdy in 1573 in nearby Vranov. In 1610, their daughter Catherine received the castle as a dowry. In 1711, the castle fell into the hands of Imperial General János Pálffy without a fight. His successor, General Lanken, ordered its demolition. It has been a ruin ever since.

After visiting this fascinating place, it is worth moving on to nearby Vranov nad Topľou, where the remarkable sacred monument Bazilika narodenia Panny Márie is well worth your attention. On hot summer days, a refreshing dip at Kúpalisko Vranov nad Topľou will surely hit the spot. If you are one of those who enjoy viewing the world from horseback, you can visit Ranč Sahiba. Adrenaline enthusiasts might enjoy driving fast go-karts at the T1 Ring go-kart track in Vranov nad Topľou.

The region offers a wide array of attractions and options for unique day trips. You will surely fall in love with it and get to know it better if you stay here for a few days. In that case, you will be happy to relax with our hosts, who offer various types of accommodation facilities. Right in Sedliská, you can book perfect accommodation near Hrad Čičva.
