Päť Spišských plies

Päť Spišských plies

Vysoké Tatry mesto

You will find Päť Spišských plies in the Vysoké Tatry mountains near the well-known Téryho chata mountain hut. The starting point is usually Starý Smokovec, but a hiking trail also leads to them from Tatranská Javorina. These five charming mountain lakes have earned the admiration of many a hiker. The high-altitude hike is suitable mainly for experienced hikers with good physical fitness. Many combine it with a crossing from Malá Studená dolina to Veľká Studená dolina. Whichever path you choose, you will not regret it.

Päť Spišských plies is actually a group of five lakes of glacial origin. Are you wondering why they are named "Spišské" when they are actually in the Tatras? They received their name in the past, derived from the Spiš County (župa) to which the lakes belonged. You can see them in this order: Malé Spišské pleso, Prostredné Spišské pleso, Veľké Spišské pleso, Vyšné Spišské pleso, and Nižné Spišské pleso. They are located at an altitude of approximately 2,000 m above sea level.

Start your hike to Spišské plesá in Starý Smokovec. If you want to save yourself some kilometers and leg strength, take the funicular up to Hrebienok. From there, follow the hiking trail to Zamkovského chata and then head up a very steep hill to Téryho chata. It is the highest-altitude mountain hut open year-round in Slovakia. Here, you can rest and refresh yourself. After all, enjoying steamed buns, homemade goulash, and a beer at an altitude of 2,015 m above sea level is not something you get to do every day. The route from Starý Smokovec is approximately 6 kilometers long, but the elevation gain is over 700 vertical meters. From Téryho chata, it is just a short walk to Spišské plesá.

If you are lucky, along the way you will see herds of chamois or hear marmots whistling. At Päť Spišských plies, you can decide whether to return back via Malá Studená dolina or continue through Priečne sedlo into Veľká Studená dolina and past Zbojnícka chata back to Starý Smokovec. If you long to see the Belianske Tatry mountains, plan your trip to Päť Spišských plies through Javorová dolina from Tatranská Javorina. This route is more demanding and longer, so you really need to set aside an entire day for it, as this valley is 11 kilometers long. However, you can also look forward to other mountain lakes here: Žabie Javorové pleso and Modré pleso.

If you love hiking, you should definitely set out for Spišské plesá. It is a popular trip after which you will fall asleep tired, yet filled with energy from the beautiful nature. Stay in the Vysoké Tatry mountains for a vacation and enjoy other Tatra hikes as well. We offer you accommodation in Vysoké Tatry, accommodation in Starý Smokovec, or accommodation in Tatranská Javorina on our portal. Kôprovský štít

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Kôprovský štít is one of the majestic peaks of the High Tatras located at the end of Mengusovská dolina. It belongs to the cadastral area of Štrbské Pleso in the Prešov Region. The ascent to the peak is a medium-difficulty hike. It can be managed by hikers who already have some mountain experience under their belt. From the top, you will enjoy a panoramic view in all directions of the surrounding Tatras peaks.

Kôprovský štít rises to an altitude of 2,363 m above sea level and is one of eight peaks in the High Tatras that you can hike up without a mountain guide. The elevation gain you will overcome is around 1,000 metres, and the route is approximately 20 kilometres long round trip. Be sure to pack enough liquids and food, as the only chalet you will pass is Chata pri Popradskom plese.

The hiking trail to Kôprovský štít starts from Štrbské pleso towards Popradské pleso. You can reach this point via an asphalt road, and you can refresh yourself at Chata pri Popradskom plese. Further on, head towards the junction nad Žabím potokom, through dwarf pines all the way into Mengusovská dolina. Once you cross Hincov potok and continue up the steep section, you will reach Veľké Hincovo pleso. It is the largest and deepest tarn on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. Due to its high altitude, it is frozen for most of the year. Pause and enjoy the magnificent view of the surrounding mountains here.

If you are lucky, besides other hikers, you might also spot chamois jumping on the rocks along the way. And if you remain quiet, you will hear the whistling of marmots. From Veľké Hincovo pleso, you will ascend through Vyšné Kôprovské sedlo all the way to Kôprovský štít. You will not find any cross here like on other peaks, but the views will enchant you, and you will remember this amazing ascent for a long time. In the distance, you can see mountains in all directions: Mengusovské štíty, Vysoká, Kriváň, and in good weather, even Lomnický štít.

If you decide to go to Kôprovský štít via a less frequented route, try it from Kôprová dolina. The hike starts at Tri studničky. Although it takes longer, spending plenty of time in the Tatras is well worth it. For hikers, this place is downright ideal for a holiday.

Set out on a hike to Kôprovský štít and you can book accommodation in the Vysoké Tatry or accommodation at Štrbské Pleso on our portal. When you feel like doing more hiking in the Tatras, try exploring other High Tatras peaks on our website.

Skalnaté pleso

Skalnaté pleso

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Skalnaté pleso is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Vysoké Tatry mountains. You can get here from Tatranská Lomnica on foot along a marked hiking trail or by cable car. It makes a beautiful trip for families with children as well.

Skalnaté pleso is located at an altitude of 1,755 m above sea level, and an educational trail leads around it, keeping even the youngest visitors entertained. At the top of the cable car station, there is a restaurant with a sun terrace, and right next to it is a children's playground - Svištia krajinka, where kids can play to their heart's content. You will find wooden marmot sculptures, climbing frames, a marmot cabin, and many other attractions here.

The tarn is of morainic origin, formed naturally after the Ice Age. No fish live in it, and its water level fluctuates. Interestingly, during dry periods, the lake dries up, which has been influenced not only by climate change but also by the construction of the cable car station.

From Skalnaté pleso, you can take a cable car to Lomnický štít, which towers to an altitude of 2,634 m above sea level directly above the tarn, creating breathtaking views. Near the tarn, at an altitude of 1,781 m above sea level, you will also discover the Astronomické observatórium, which includes an observatory.

Skalnaté pleso is magnificent in both winter and summer. During a winter skiing trip, you can relax here before hitting the slopes, on what is, by the way, the steepest ski slope in Slovakia. However, don't forget to check the weather forecast; the Vysoké Tatry can be unpredictable. Set out on a trip here and you certainly won't regret it. Astronomické observatórium Skalnaté Pleso

Astronomické observatórium Skalnaté Pleso

Vysoké Tatry mesto

A magnet for tourists visiting the Tatras is the moraine lake lying at the foot of the impressive Lomnický štít. Skalnaté pleso boasts an intersection of picturesque natural scenery and breathtaking views. It is precisely within this unique natural composition that the oldest Slovak observatory found its home,  the Astronomické observatórium Skalnaté pleso observatory. The dominant two-dome structure is located just a few meters from the lake itself and the cable car station. The direct access point to this site is one of the largest settlements in High Tatras, the tourist-favorite Tatranská Lomnica.

The Astronomické observatórium Skalnaté pleso was founded in 1943. Its founder, Dr. Antonín Bečvář, served as its first director. The observatory is located in a two-story building at an altitude of 1,786 m above sea level. The structure catches the eye with its cylindrical tower and two opening domes. Housed right here are two telescopes designed for observing planets, comets, Solar System objects, and stellar bodies. In addition, the observatory building houses a meteorological station belonging to the Geophysical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV). Visitors only have access during organized open days.

An interesting fact is that asteroid 2619 was named after the Astronomické observatórium Skalnaté pleso. It received the name Skalnaté pleso. Since 1982, when the naming of the minor planet was recognized by the International Astronomical Union, Skalnaté pleso is no longer found only in our high mountains, but also somewhere in the orbit of the Sun, at a minimum distance of 279 million km from Earth.

While a journey to the asteroid Skalnaté pleso is a thing of the distant future, you can comfortably ride up to our terrestrial Skalnaté pleso by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica. Hiking enthusiasts can set off on an ascent along a moderately challenging trail lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Galéria Dobrá hračka

Galéria Dobrá hračka

Vysoké Tatry mesto

This unique interactive children's gallery is guided by a revolutionary, yet wonderfully simple idea: "let's play smartly". After all, it was during childhood that many of us discovered the magic of the profession that feeds us today. Play doesn't just mean sitting at a computer. Play in childhood should be full of discoveries, imagination, dreams, laughter, and yes, occasionally some dirt, torn pants, or scraped knees. Galéria Dobrá hračka fosters creativity, teamwork, self-confidence, and spontaneity in children. So don't hesitate and come visit with your children too. You can even host a children's birthday party here or expand your home toy collection with truly unique pieces from the local shop.

In Tatranská Lomnica, right opposite the Múzeum Tatranského národného parku, a children's paradise stretches across an area of 500 m². Remember what it was like to dream about becoming a police officer or an astronaut? With us, children try out the profession firsthand. Little police officers direct traffic here and fine non-compliance with traffic regulations. On top of that, however, they will investigate a crime scene and perhaps even solve a tricky case. An obstacle course will test the fitness of many a little firefighter. Will yours be the one to help a kitten down from a tree?

While one child is drawn to a uniform, the hearts of others will be won over by science. Little doctors will treat minor injuries, learn something new about the human body, and maybe even put together an X-ray image. A future archaeologist will use a hammer slightly different from a medical one when searching for excavations. And who knows, maybe they will find their very first one right at Dobrá hračka. Discovering everyday life is also fascinating, though. How does a cogwheel turn, and what does it need teeth for if it doesn't go to the dentist? Our factory provides the answer, where children have already assembled many a working machine.

If your little princess likes dressing up dolls, you, and herself, perhaps a fashion designer's talent lies within her, just waiting to mature. Mandatory equipment includes tailor's chalk, a tape measure, scissors, and, of course, plenty of creative and quirky ideas. On the runway under the spotlights, they can showcase a graceful walk and command all the attention. Maybe a drummer in the music corner will play to their beat! However, lovers of fast driving will also have fun here. They can cruise the roads (watch out for the police officer!), but also look under the hood of a Formula car in the role of auto mechanics. Check the tires, refuel, and head out! Yet that's still not all, but we won't reveal any more to you so that you have some surprises left.

Good children don't misbehave; good children play. And they love to play most of all in Galéria Dobrá hračka, so come see for yourself as well. Moreover, if you book accommodation near Galéria Dobrá hračka, you can plan a great multi-day trip full of fun. Children and adults alike love the exhibition at the Múzeum Tatranského národného parku, where, for example, they can explore a bear den from the inside. And if you hop on the Tatra electric railway (tatranská električka), all the attractions of Vysoké Tatry will be within reach, hiking, family, relaxation, and gastronomy. The Tatry are indeed a region of unlimited possibilities, so come explore them. Apartments in Tatranská Lomnica and cottages in Vysoké Tatry are already waiting for you.

On an inconspicuous meadow in the middle of a village beneath the Tatras, you will find a paleontological site of world importance. You might still remember Gánovce, located in the Poprad district, from history classes as the site where a travertine cast of the brainpart of a Neanderthal skull was found. Gánovské travertíny and Gejzír were declared a national natural monument in 1972. Although many tourists coming to this region have no idea about this rare place amidst a green meadow, visiting a location where natural wealth meets the breath of ancient times is certainly worth it.

The Gánovské travertíny reach a height of approximately two meters. Travertiine is a type of limestone created by the precipitation of freshwater thermal springs. Right at this spot in the 1920s, a blaster during travertine mining found a cast of part of a Neanderthal skull that contained the brain. He initially considered the cast to be an animal skull. He handed it over to an employee of the Národné múzeum v Prahe, unaware of the importance and significance of his discovery. Gánovské travertíny subsequently became an extraordinarily important site of fossil fauna and flora as well.

Not far from the travertine mound, there is a geyser that spouts thermal water every 30 minutes. Thermal springs with healing mineral water have been known in Gánovce since 1549, when Gánovské kúpele were mentioned for the first time. Today they operate under the name Aqua Spa Gánovce, and you can combine a visit to them in your trip itinerary with a walk to Gánovské travertíny and Gejzír.

In case you cannot get enough of water fun and relaxation in Gánovce, the water paradise AquaCity Poprad is located in the nearby district town of Poprad, being a popular excursion spot for visitors from all over Slovakia. Or will you feel like continuing your walk through history after visiting the paleontological site? Visit the Podtatranské múzeum v Poprade, where they will reliably guide you through the history of the entire Tatra region. The culmination of a pleasant day filled with unusual experiences will certainly be resting in accommodation near Gánovské travertíny and Gejzír. Choose accommodation in Poprad according to your preferences and spend a pleasant holiday under the Tatras. Apartments, hotels, guest houses, as well as cozy holiday homes, cottages, and chalets are available.

Folklórny festival Východná

Folklórny festival Východná

Východná

Do you like Slovak traditions, folk music, and dances? Do you like searching for cultural events? Then definitely visit the Folklórny Festival Východná. This largest and at the same time oldest festival of ours with international participation is organized annually in the picturesque village of Východná. On the threshold of the summer season, in the first weekend of July, the Nízke Tatry region comes alive with folk traditions and for a few days becomes the center of Slovak culture.

The Folklóry festival is a showcase of the regular and tireless work of many institutions, associations, and individuals who are engaged in the field of traditional folk culture. Over its 66-year history, the festival has become the premier showcase of the traditions of the Slovak nation. On average, 1,400 participants from folklore and singing groups, children's ensembles, soloist musicians, and dancers take care of a rich program every year. The participation of folk craftsmen, artists, and woodcarvers is very significant. Various dance, music, and singing workshops, craft creative workshops, and entertainment programs for children enjoy increasing popularity.

By its existence, the festival significantly contributes to the revival and preservation of precious cultural values. The history of its origin is interesting and a pleasant memory is attached to it. The Kriváň ethnographic troupe from Východná participated in the festivities in the Moravian town of Strážnica in 1952. Their performance was so successful that Kriváň won the award "sweetheart of Strážnica". This experience so enthused and inspired the members of Kriváň that they decided to organize the Festival of Songs and Dances at home in Východná.

The first year of the festivities in Východná took place in 1953 on a makeshift stage and lasted only one day. At the 2nd year, the professional artistic ensemble SĽUK performed as an important guest, and the 3rd year was already a two-day event. Lúčnica presented itself as a guest at that time. Historically significant was the 4th year of the festival, when new thematic programs were added, such as a review of children's folk ensembles, but also a folk dance school or a ceremonial parade of all participants passing through the entire village. The three-day program as we know it today took place only from the 5th year.

Besides the stage, a new amphitheater was built in the 1970s, which was based on the architecture of original Liptov buildings. Gradually, a "horseshoe" for the presentation of folk art elements, dressing rooms, exhibition showcases, and a "spring" with washbasins for visitors were also added. The 28-meter-high Májka observation tower also joined, from which you will be offered an amazing view of the Tatry. The amphitheater acquired its current form with a covered stage in 2006. The first international participation at the festival was the Folklórna skupina Goralov (Podhale) originating from the Polish town of Nowy Targ.

A curiosity is the so-called Ornamentíky, which, at the initiative of ethnographer Jarmila Paličková and Viliam Gruska, were brought by more than 20 village folklore groups in 1974. Ornamentíky are embroidered standards that draw from regional traditions and state the name of the folklore collective or village they come from. At the jubilee 60th year of the Festival Východná, these ornamentíky were hung in the amphitheater. Currently, all folklore collectives have an ornamentík as their business card and present themselves with them at events at home and abroad.

Become a part of this significant cultural event yourself and book your summer holiday in Liptov today. A rich offer of accommodation near the Folklórny Festival Východná can be found on our page accommodation Východná. After the cultural experience, treat yourself to well-being in the thermal pools of our largest water park Tatralandia. A visit to the Dom hore nohami will also be an interesting experience. We believe that you will like Liptov and take home many great experiences.

Tatranský národný park

Tatranský národný park

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Tatranský národný park is the oldest of all 9 national parks in our territory. It is designated by the abbreviation TANAP. It extends across the north of Central and Eastern Slovakia, in the region of the Tatry mountains. It consists of two main subunits: Východné Tatry (comprising Vysoké Tatry with a length of 26 km and Belianske Tatry with a length of 15 km) and Západné Tatry (with a length of 37 km). It reaches into the Žilinský kraj and Prešovský kraj regions, specifically the districts of Liptovský Mikuláš, Kežmarok, Poprad, and Tvrdošín. The national park covers an area of 73,800 ha, supplemented by a protective buffer zone spanning 30,703 ha. It features a network of 600 km of hiking trails and 16 marked, maintained cycling routes. The administration of Tatranský národný park has offices in Svit and Liptovský Mikuláš.

Tatranský národný park has a complex geological structure. Its relief was once shaped by glaciers, as evidenced by their remnants in the form of attractive Tatran tarns (plesá). The Tatry as a whole are mainly composed of granite and other crystalline rocks from the Paleozoic era. The climate here is one of the coldest and rainiest in our territory. Two-thirds of the national park's protected area are covered by spruce or spruce-fir forests. The only accessible cave is Belianska jaskyňa.

History of the national park

Tatranský národný park was established on January 1, 1949. Five years after its founding, a national park was also created on the Polish side of the Tatry. Its name is identical, Tatrzański Park Narodowy, and together with it, Vysoké Tatry form a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere Programme. The lowest point is at an altitude of 710 m a.s.l. Conversely, the highest point of Vysoké Tatry and the entire national park is the peak of Gerlachovský štít at an elevation of 2,655 m a.s.l. The highest point of Západné Tatry is Bystrá (2,248 m a.s.l.), while the highest in Belianske Tatry is Havran (2,152 m a.s.l.). Among other highlights, we can include Modré pleso (the highest-situated tarn, elevation 2,192 m a.s.l.) and Veľké Hincovo pleso (the largest and deepest tarn, surface area 20.08 ha, depth 53.7 m).

In the past, the most frequent visitors to this natural territory were treasure hunters, herbalists, miners, hunters, and naturally, poachers. Rumors about Vysoké Tatry circulated around the world, with the first printed mention of them dating back to 1549. From then on, other explorers gradually began discovering them, eager to explore their beauty. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the first scientific works about Vysoké Tatry began to emerge.

In times long past, nature was everywhere. People felt that there was an abundance of it, and therefore no thought was given to protection. This only changed after the founding of the Hungarian Carpathian Society (Uhorský karpatský spolok) in the last third of the 19th century. People began to discuss various conservation associations and considered how to protect different species of Tatran flora and fauna. It was also necessary to regulate the areas where livestock grazed. The society was very active, fighting against poachers, withstanding the pressure of herders, and striving in every way to save Tatran nature. It also permitted the importation of non-native plants, such as rhododendrons originating from the Austrian Alps, and agreed to their acclimatization. The society dissolved after World War I, which caused significant damage to Tatran nature as well. The neglect of forest care, massive timber theft, a free hand for poachers, and the recklessness of herders all had a negative impact. The role of the society was partially taken over by the Club of Czechoslovak Tourists (Klub československých turistov) and the German Karpatenverein.

Fauna and flora of TANAP

Tatranský národný park contains numerous protected and rare species of plants and animals within its territory. The fauna of Tatranský národný park bears traces of the existence of extremely cold periods during the Ice Ages as well as subsequent warmer periods. Therefore, cosmopolitan, Palearctic, European, and endemic species occur here. An enormous quantity of all represented animal species can be found here. Research continuously takes place within the national park, discovering more and more species of animals. Among the rare animals living in the park, we can mention the Tatran marmot, golden eagle, Tatra chamois, or brown bear.

The flora of Tatranský národný park includes a wide array of diverse plants, ranging from submontane and thermophilic species, through forest, mountain, and moisture-loving plants, to alpine species. Various rare species can be found here that you will not find anywhere else in Slovakia or the Western Carpathians. These include, for example, the Tatra bellflower (zvonček hrubokoreňový) or Tatra poppy (mak tatranský). There are also representatives of glacial relics, remnants from the Ice Ages, such as mountain avens (dryádka osemlupienková) or glacier buttercup (iskerník ľadovcový). Rare plants also include the spring pasqueflower (poniklec jarný) or black sedge (ostrica černastá). National park staff focus primarily on protecting mountain and high-mountain plants, among the more well-known being dwarf pine stands or the beautiful edelweiss (plesnivec alpínsky).

The administration and staff of Tatranský národný park exert great effort to spread awareness among the public. In 1957, the Museum of the Tatranský Národný Park was established in Tatranská Lomnica. In the same year, a professional Mountain Rescue Service (Horská služba Tatranského národného parku) was set up. Over time, they also took the administration of the Symbolic Cemetery near Popradské pleso under their wing. Regulation of expanding built-up areas was implemented, and several hiking trails were closed or discontinued. In 1979, the "Clean Mountains" (Čisté hory) initiative was launched for the first time, aiming to cleanse the high-mountain environment of omnipresent litter.

Our generation remembers very well the devastating windstorm that swept through the Tatry region, and thus through the territory of Tatranský národný park, on November 19, 2004. Wind gusts reached devastating speeds of 230 km/h in places. The wind was classified as a hurricane, representing the largest Tatran disaster since 1936. More than 12,000 ha of forest were damaged. Subsequently, the forest stands were damaged by bark beetles. Many conservation organizations intervened on-site, preventing the clearance and removal of damaged stands. Sad statistics indicate that between 2004 and 2016, bark beetle infestations destroyed as many trees as the 2004 hurricane itself.

Tatranský národný park today

Since 1972, visitor numbers in Tatranský národný park have been regularly measured and recorded. While in the 1970s the average daily attendance was between 16,000 and 20,000 visitors per day, after a record in 1981 (26,250 visitors), the numbers began to decline significantly. A resurgence was recorded only at the end of the 1990s. Monitoring in recent years has shown that at the peak of the summer season. When people visit the mountains seeking healthy physical activity, cooling off, or enjoying well-deserved views—approximately 60,000 people move through TANAP daily. Among the most visited locations are Rysy, Kriváň, Skalnaté pleso, Štrbské pleso, Popradské pleso, as well as the area of Hrebienok and Studené doliny.

There are 14 nature reserves, 3 national natural monuments, and 27 national nature reserves within Tatranský národný park. It is difficult to list the most attractive or exceptional among them, as each of these places is unique, excels in its own way, and appeals to tourists differently. The best approach would be to explore them all. However, you do not become a true Tatran local or nature lover simply by the number of kilometers you have hiked along the trails. True transformation happens in the heart, out of conviction. It is precisely these people who help protect and flourish nature so that many future generations can discover and enjoy its beauty. Let us be considerate of nature. Let us teach our children to do the same. Let us spread awareness. Let actions speak for us, not boastful words.

So come and pay homage to the majestic Tatran nature. Book your accommodation near Tatranský národný park. There are more than enough options, as the park covers a vast area. Try choosing based on the planned trips you wish to take in the surroundings. Once you have a plan, you can visit the pages accommodation Prešovský kraj or accommodation Žilinský kraj. You will certainly find a location that fits perfectly into your travel plans.

Kmeťov vodopád

Kmeťov vodopád

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Kmeťov vodopád, with its impressive height of 80 m, is the highest waterfall in Slovakia. If you want to visit it, you will find it in a spruce forest on the western side of the lower slopes of Kriváň peak. Its exact location is Kôprová dolina in the western part of Vysoké Tatry. The waters of Nefcerský potok fall from an altitude of 1,245 m above sea level.

The waterfall bears the attributes glacial, tectonic, and selective. Miloš Janoška gave it its name in the 1st Slovak guide to the Tatras from 1911. It was named after the Slovak scholar and priest Andrej Kmeť. The waterfall is formed by two steps, and the water falls in a relatively narrow, wild, and cascading stream.

To find it, you have to go further off the path. It is well hidden in the forest. You will not see it from the road. You will have a nice view of the waterfall from above from a wooden viewing platform, which is actually a bridge over the bed of Nefcerský potok. You can reach it via a path after turning off the blue-marked hiking trail in Kôprová dolina. The cycling route ends as well.

A popular walking and cycling route leads from the Podbanské parking lot along the yellow, green, and subsequently blue hiking trail. It is an easy hike lasting approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, with a length of about 8.5 km. Another route from Podbanské leads along the red hiking trail, later joining the blue one, and is 1.5 km longer compared to the previous one.

Another frequently used route leads from the parking lot at the former Važecká chata at Tri studničky. It is 1.5 kilometers shorter than the one leading from Podbanské; however, it is more challenging, although it is more scenic thanks to passing through the forest. At its beginning and end, there is a steeper hill that needs to be conquered.

Experienced hikers can choose from two interesting yet demanding routes. One leads from Štrbské pleso, through Popradské pleso, Hincové plesá, Vyšné Kôprovské sedlo, and subsequently through Hlinská dolina to Kôprová dolina. The second route leads through Tichá dolina from Podbanské, through Liptovský košiar, Sedlo Závory, and subsequently through Kobylia dolina to Kôprová dolina. These are hikes demanding both in terms of required physical fitness and covered distance, elevation gain, and time.

Whichever route you choose, your reward will be a visit to a waterfall that is not overcrowded with tourists. Since there is no mountain shelter located in its vicinity, we recommend booking an overnight stay on the pages accommodation Podbanské or accommodation Štrbské Pleso, where the starting points of the hike are located. Consider a longer stay as well and visit various other attractions in the surroundings of Vysoké Tatry. There are many of them, and each is more interesting than the last.

Národný park Slovenský raj

Národný park Slovenský raj

Dedinky

Národný park Slovenský raj is one of nine Slovak national parks and is considered one of the most beautiful. It stretches across the Banskobystrický kraj, Prešovský kraj, and Košický kraj regions, where it extends into the Spiš region. It is located within the territories of the Brezno, Poprad, Spišská Nová Ves, and Rožňava districts. The territory of Slovenský raj is a true paradise for hikers. Waterfalls, canyons, rocks, and breathtaking views. This is how our most visited national park could also be characterized.

NP Slovenský raj is a paradise for both animals and tourists

Slovenský raj was declared a national park in 1988. There are 11 national nature reserves and 8 nature reserves here. The park's territory lies in the north of the Slovenský Rudohorie mountains. Due to its fauna and flora, it has been included in the highest level of protection. Bears, wolves, foxes, and lynx live here, and even the Tatra chamois was artificially released here in 1963. Trout swim in the streams, and we can find various species of falcons as well as the golden eagle here.

The area of Národný park Slovenský raj is 19,414 hectares. Two rivers, the Hnilec and the Hornád, flow through the park, creating unique water phenomena—canyons, gorges, ravines, and waterfalls. The longest gorge is Prielom Hornádu, which was declared a national nature reserve as early as 1964. The section is 16 km long and belongs to the cadastre of the village of Letanovce. The trail is full of bridges, ladders, footbridges, and chains. Tourists from far and wide come to admire the wonderful scenery here.

The most visited gorge in Slovenský raj is Suchá Belá, through which a stream of the same name flows. You can reach it from the tourist center of Podlesok near the village of Hrabušice. The valley is interspersed with several waterfalls such as Misové vodopády, Korytový, or the beautiful Okienkový vodopád. With good hiking boots, even children can manage this undemanding and interesting hike.

Explore gorges, waterfalls, and the adrenaline-filled via ferrata

Národný park Slovenský raj also offers other gorges to explore. Klaštorská dolina is relatively short but popular with families with children. On the 1.5-kilometer route, you can admire Vodopád objaviteľov, Strakov vodopád, or Dúhový vodopád. Your starting point will be Kláštorisko, which is a ruin of a 13th-century Carthusian monastery. You will find a tourist center and a restaurant here. The entrance to this part of Slovenský raj is a rope bridge, a footbridge that was the first to be built when the gorge was opened to the public.

We also recommend visiting other nature reserves of Slovenský raj. In the Sokolia dolina gorge, which is the steepest valley in the park, you will find Závojový vodopád. With its height of 75 meters, it is the highest waterfall in Slovenský raj, and you can visit it from Tomášovská Belá. A no less famous gorge is Kyseľ, where the second largest waterfall in this park, Obrovský vodopád, is located. Adrenaline enthusiasts in the gorge will certainly be pleased by the Kyseľ Ferrata, a place where you can try rock climbing.

Other popular gorges include Piecky, Veľký Sokol, and Tiesňavy. The gorges in NP Slovenský raj require an entry fee but are open year-round. The weather, just like in the mountains, can be changeable here. Before your visit, always check the forecast and check the status of the hiking trails on the national park's website. Do not forget good, waterproof clothing or a raincoat. Due to its humidity, Slovenský raj resembles a primeval forest.

The most beautiful view and a magical ice cave await you

The most beautiful view in Slovenský raj will undoubtedly open up to you at Tomášovský výhľad. You can reach this rocky outcrop from the tourist center of Čingov or from the village of Smižany. Even seniors or families with children can handle the ascent to it. Of course, caution is advised. From an altitude of 667 m a.s.l., you will be able to see as far as the Vysoké Tatry mountains.

There is a large number of caves in Národný park Slovenský raj, most of which remain unexplored. Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa, accessible from the village of Dobšiná, is open to the public. And as the name suggests, the cave is a magical realm of ice. So, if your children love Frozen, Elsa, Anna, or the snowman named Olaf, a visit to the cave will be an unforgettable experience for them.

If you are looking for a place in Slovenský raj to swim or laze about so that you can rest after a demanding hike, try the Klauzy water reservoir. The shores of the Palcmanská Maša water reservoir in the village of Dedinky also offer perfect relaxation. This largest water reservoir in Slovenský raj will also be an ideal starting point for your further wanderings through the national park.

Thanks to its countless natural beauties, Slovenský raj is the right place for an active holiday. Go on hikes here and admire what nature has created. We have prepared tips for trips in Slovenský raj for you. Plan your holiday now. We offer you quality accommodation near Národný park Slovenský raj. Book it on the page for accommodation in Slovenský raj or accommodation in Dedinky on our portal. You will surely choose from the wide offer. Hybická tiesňava

Hybická tiesňava

Východná

Visitors to Horný Liptov will experience the atmosphere of rainforests in the impressive Hybická tiesňava gorge, which was declared a national natural monument due to its uniqueness. This unique natural phenomenon, falling within the Tatranský národný park, is located north of the distinctive village of Východná in the Liptovský Mikuláš district. The beautiful canyon-like valley was shaped by the inconspicuous Hybica stream in the soft limestone bedrock. For lovers of picturesque natural scenery, this little-visited place will become a paradise on earth.

This unique piece of nature combines steep stone crags rising to the sky, an impressive forest scenery rich in rare species of fauna and flora, and a pleasantly murmuring stream, which was the painter of this beauty in the past. The gorge also fascinates visitors with its high humidity, evoking the atmosphere of rainforests. A huge benefit of this place is its very low visitor numbers, preserving the naturalness and pristine character of the environment. This is mainly due to the fact that no marked hiking trail leads to Hybická tiesňava. You can only reach this breathtaking spot via a dirt road from the village of Východná or through the forest from the nearby village of Podbanské.

An interesting fact is that Hybická tiesňava is only 4 m wide at its narrowest point. In contrast, the towering overhanging crags lining the passage through the canyon reach an incredible height of 15–20 m in some places. The passage through the gorge currently leads largely through the streambed. Activists plan to build a hiking trail that should lead in the future from the birthplace of the famous movie outlaw, the village of Hybe. The trail through the gorge itself should be 3 km long.

If you decide on a vacation in Liptov this year, be sure to bring high-quality hiking boots with you and set out to explore this unique place. You can combine hiking in this location with a visit to Farma Východná or the popular Folklórny festival Východná, which takes place regularly on the first weekend of July. Your vacation in this region will certainly be made more pleasant by a wide range of accommodation options near Hybická tiesňava. You can make use of cottages and chalets in Východná and its surroundings, or accommodation in Liptovský Mikuláš, which includes a wide selection of guesthouses and hotels. A vacation in Liptov is an offer of unusual experiences and relaxation directly surrounded by unique nature.

Traditional folk dances and songs, excellent acoustics, the open sky above your head, and much more await you at Amfiteáter Východná.

Every year, around 1,400 performers ensure a fantastic program. Evening concerts also have their own charm, creating a romantic atmosphere at sunset and making the performance experience even more powerful. In addition to music and dance, you can admire the architecture of the amphitheater, which is based on traditional Liptov structures. Large wooden sculptures are the works of woodcarvers from various corners of Slovakia.

An emotional story is connected to the creation of our most significant Slovak folk festival. In 1952, the Kriváň ethnographic troupe from Východná participated in the celebrations in Strážnice in Moravia. Their performance met with great success, and Kriváň won the "Darling of Strážnice" award. This experience thrilled the members of Kriváň so much that they decided to organize the Festival of Songs and Dances at home, in Východná. The first edition of the festival took place in 1953 on a temporary stage; however, just a year later, a wooden amphitheater was built as we know it today.

Folk creations, craftspeople, and local producers whose products you can purchase directly at the amphitheater are an indispensable part of the festival. Young people with an artistic soul will also find plenty to enjoy, as music, dance, and singing workshops are organized for them. Children will have fun creating in craft workshops. Anyone who feels like it can make a bowl or an animal on a potter's wheel, weave a whip, or try blueprinting.

Východná is a celebration of folklore that contributes to the preservation of our traditions. Come and experience an unforgettable event that will touch your heart. Ždiar

Belasé pleso is located in the northeastern part of the Vysoké Tatry, more precisely in Dolina Zeleného Plesa, which is part of Červená dolina. The waters of the tarn fill a glacial cirque and its lower part is dammed by a moraine 6 m high. The tarn has no surface inlet or outlet. It belongs among the smaller Tatra tarns, with an area of only 0.07 ha, a length of 40 m. Therefore, in the summer months, it often dries up completely, reaching its maximum depth of 3.8 m only during cold and humid months.

The name of Belasé pleso originated from the apparent color of the water, created by reflections on the water surface. It lies at an altitude of 1,862 m a. s. l., and towering above it to the north are Kozí štít and Jahňací štít, to the west Kolové sedlo, and to the south Jastrabia veža. To the southeast, there are no peaks but open landscape, of which Červené pleso is a part.

No tourist trail leads directly to Belasé pleso, but south of it runs a yellow trail that starts at Chata pri Zelenom plese and ends at Jahňací štít. This hike sets out from Tatranské Matliare, towards Šalviový prameň, through the Kovaľčíková poľana crossroads, then to Zelené pleso, and subsequently to the peak. For the return trip, it is necessary to go back the same way. This route is classified as more demanding and takes a full day.

To explore this area, you will need accommodation near Belasé pleso, so you have a place to rest after the hike. The easiest option will be to stay in Tatranské Matliare, where you will find comfortable apartments. A more varied offer is in Tatranská Lomnica, where various types of accommodation are available, and you can choose exactly the one that suits you. Tatranská Lomnica will, of course, also provide all necessary services, and besides that, there are several tourist attractions right there, including the Múzeum Tatranského národného parku museum, a bobsleigh track, or the Aqua Relax Titris water world.

Zelené pleso

Zelené pleso

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Zelené pleso is one of the most romantic tarns in the Vysoké Tatry mountains. This glacial lake, lying at an altitude of 1551 m a.s.l., was named thanks to the springs that well up at its bottom and cause green spots. However, a more interesting variation is the ancient legend according to which a dazzling green gemstone fell into it from Jastrabej veže tower.

If you were looking on a map, point your finger to the eastern part of the Vysoké Tatry, to the Doliny Bielej vody kežmarskej valley, or the Doliny Zeleného plesa valley. Thanks to a maximum depth of 4.5 m, you can see all the way to the bottom of this moraine tarn from near the shore. With an area of 1.78 ha, it does not belong among the largest tarns, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful.

This turquoise-colored tarn is a popular destination not only for experienced hikers, skiers, and cyclists but also for families with older children or active seniors. Even so, good physical fitness is recommended, as the hike with an elevation gain of 855 meters along the yellow tourist trail is only moderately difficult, yet relatively lengthy. However, if that is not enough for you, the natural continuation of the route is the ascent to Jahňací štít peak or continuing to Skalnaté pleso.

The dominant feature of the view is the well-known "Brnčalka", as the Chata pri Zelenom plese mountain hut is called, which, thanks to its ochre facade, cannot be confused with any other. The history of the first shelter on the site of the current hut dates back to the end of the 1890s. It is open year-round, and if you are planning a challenging hike to the surrounding peaks, it is a suitable place for an overnight stay. Otherwise, do you know about its unusual phenomenon, which is more known from Nordic countries? In the period from October to March, not a single ray of sun touches it. Despite this, it is very popular even during this period.

The starting points for the hike to Zelenému plesu are Tatranské Matliare, the Biela Voda bus stop, or Tatranská Lomnica. For a perfect hiking experience, good planning is necessary, especially if you are traveling with children. So that you are not under time pressure to return home before dark, we recommend booking accommodation nearby in advance. You can find the best offers for accommodation near Zeleného plesa, as well as accommodation Tatranské Matliare or accommodation Tatranská Lomnica, directly on our website.

Jahňací štít

Jahňací štít

Vysoké Tatry mesto

Jahňací štít rises in the northeastern part of the Vysoké Tatry, at an altitude of 2,229.6 m a. s. l., and is the easternmost high-Tatras peak. It falls into the Prešovský kraj region, under the Poprad district. Four ridges branch out from it. The southwest ridge leads via Kolový priechod to Kolovské sedlo. The northwest ridge, called hrebeň Jahnecov, separates Jahňací kotol from Kolová dolina. The southeast ridge, called Kozí hrebeň, separates Červená dolina from Dolina Bielych plies. And the last, northeast ridge, leads via Jahňací hrb into Kopské sedlo.

Jahňací štít belongs among the 6 freely accessible mountain peaks. Climbing it can be undertaken only during the period when the trails are open, usually between June and November. Among tourists, it is said to have one of the most beautiful views in the entire Vysoké Tatry.

The English traveler Robert Townson with his guide Hans Gross during their visit to Uhorsko in 1793 made the first known ascent of Jahňací štít. However, it is probable that shepherds and poachers had already been on it before them, perhaps even miners who mined copper around the peak in the 18th century. In 1911, the first winter climbers were on the peak.

You can reach the summit via various routes. The shortest one leads along the yellow and subsequently blue tourist trail from the Biela voda stop to Chata pri Zelenom plese, known as Brnčalka (approximately 2.5 hours), and subsequently (approximately another 2 hours) all the way to the summit. A longer route leads from Skalnaté pleso via Veľká Svišťovka (along the yellow and red tourist trail), or from Chata Plesnivec (along the yellow, red, and green tourist trail). You can also set off from Tatranská Javorina, Tatranská Kotlina, Tatranské Matliare, Skalnatá chata, or Tatranská Lomnica. From the summit, you will subsequently see amazing views of the Belianske Tatry, Lomnický štít, Dolina Kežmarskej Bielej vody, Kolová dolina, and Dolina Bielych plies.

As time went on, the name of the peak also changed. When Townson wrote his first-ascent itinerary in 1793, he designated it as Štít Bieleho plesa, in the original White Lake Peak. Later, the name Lastovica was used. The creators of the name were inspired by the wallcreeper (murárik červenokrídly), popularly called skalná lastovica, which occurred abundantly in this locality. The current name cannot be attributed to shepherds with certainty, although the word "jahňací" might evoke it. A more probable reason is the German and Hungarian mutation of the name, where the translation preserved the name Kamzičí štít. There is an assumption that the poachers of the time also played a role in creating the name, who once called young chamois lambs (jahňatá). In any case, we also owe the current name to the Uhorský karpatský spolok, which was active in creating the nomenclature of objects in the Tatry at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

The climb to Jahňací štít does not belong among extremely difficult ones, yet it is still not recommended to underestimate preparation. Go on the hike rested and full of strength. You will achieve this, for example, by staying somewhere in the vicinity of Jahňací štít, and in the morning you do not have to waste time with a long transfer from home. On our page, you will find many accommodation facilities from which everyone will surely choose the most suitable one for themselves.

Vodná nádrž Čierny Váh (horná)

Vodná nádrž Čierny Váh (horná)

Kráľova Lehota

The Vodná nádrž Čierny Váh reservoir was built in the second half of the 20th century on the middle course of the Čierny Váh river. It was constructed for the purpose of pumping water for a power plant. The Čierny Váh power plant itself is not only our highest-located, but also our largest and most powerful hydroelectric power plant. The waterworks consists of an upper reservoir (circular) and a lower reservoir (elongated).

Let us imagine the first of them, the upper water reservoir, which is located in the territory of the Národný park Nízke Tatry. It is built on the Vysoké Sokoly karst plateau, near the village of Kráľova Lehota. Its construction took place in the years 1976–1979. The reservoir is situated at the top of a hill and has a water volume of 3.7 million cubic meters. Water is pumped into it from the lower reservoir, overcoming an elevation gain of more than 400 meters in the process.

The upper reservoir of Čierny Váh is considered one of the most beautiful places in the area, offering you a virtually fairytale view of the entire Horný Liptov region and the panorama of the Tatry mountains. You can reach it via one of the marked cycling routes or hiking trails. The most commonly used routes lead from Východná, through Svarín and Kráľova Lehota. Although an asphalt road leads to it, it is private with a strict prohibition of entry for motor vehicles.

For the public, entry to the upper reservoir site is prohibited. However, (for now) it is mostly tolerated by the power plant. When you set off toward it, a sign immediately catches your eye: "Water level fluctuations. Swimming in the reservoir is prohibited." Those who nevertheless make the trip all the way to the top will walk 1,660 meters during a circuit around the reservoir. The view of the water surface is truly calming. To some, the water on the black asphalt coating resembles pitch. The difference between the minimum and maximum water levels of the reservoir is 26 meters.

An interesting fact is that in order for water to be pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir, more energy is consumed than generated. Bizarre? Perhaps. But no one has come up with a better idea so far.

Approximately 1 kilometer from the water reservoir is the Lesnícky cintorín Čierny Váh forest cemetery. It includes the Kaplnka sv. Trojice chapel and a wooden bell tower. It is a publicly accessible attraction that was established in the territory of Kráľova Lehota in the first half of the 18th century.

If you want to take a trip and see live one of the most beautiful views that Slovakia has to offer, you should definitely visit Čierny Váh. You can book accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the Vodná nádrž Čierny Váh reservoir on the accommodation Kráľova Lehota pages. And once you are in Liptov, it would be a shame not to check out other attractions that this extremely popular region offers as well. Will it be a visit to one of the water parks, ski resorts, open-air museums, or one of the caves? It is entirely up to you, but whichever option you choose, you will certainly not regret it.
