Kaštieľ Svätý Anton

Svätý Anton

In Svätý Anton, the manor house is among the village's dominant landmarks, visited annually by thousands of tourists from all over Slovakia. The manor house is also referred to as Koháriovský kaštieľ or Kaštieľ Antol. It is classified as a Baroque-Neoclassical manor house. A beautiful English park is an integral part of it. Come to Kaštieľ Svätý Anton, which is situated in the stunning environment of Štiavnické vrchy.

The manor house itself originally originated as a museum in 1962, when several collections from the forestry and timber museum in Zvolen found their permanent place here. In the manor house as such, you will find several exhibitions. Among the main and most attractive is the hunting exhibition, which, in addition to rare game trophies, also contains many weapons, paintings, books, magazines, and other artistic objects.

The Koháry and Coburg families are tied to the manor house. Their representatives concentrated wealth from various corners of the world here. It reflects the lifestyle, taste, and hobbies of these two families at the time. A unique feature is that the original furniture has been preserved within the manor house, which was otherwise stolen or sold by people in those times.

A beautiful chapel where the inhabitants of the manor house spent their days in prayer forms part of the estate. A Baroque stone fountain is located in the courtyard. If you come just to contemplate, plan a walk through the English park, which features two small lakes with waterfalls and cascades. You surely have not heard that an artificially created cave, a grotto, is located within the manor house premises.

A legend connected with calendar symbolism circulates about the manor house. The manor house originally had 4 entrances symbolizing the seasons, 7 arcades recalling the days of the week, 12 chimneys for the months, 52 rooms denoting the weeks of the year, and 365 windows – just as there are days in a year. You can notice these details during a tour of the manor house from the outside. Artists from Western Europe truly took great care with the work.

If you also decide to discover all its nooks and crannies, do not forget to view and book accommodation near Kaštieľ Svätý Anton in advance. You can choose either a guesthouse in Svätý Anton or a room in private accommodation. The selection of accommodation is varied. The offer of many attractions is rich as well. Hrad Sitno

Hrad Sitno

Ilija

In the district of Banská Štiavnica, the highest peak of Štiavnické vrchy, the Sitno peak, is the dominant feature. Right on it, you can find the ruins of the famous Sitno castle, which provided defense against enemies. Visit the village of Ilija, into whose cadastral area Sitniansky hrad falls.

The history of Sitno castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was established as a fortified hillfort on this peak. Three centuries later, a gate with a defensive function was added. The castle consisted of two parts: the upper castle palace and the lower castle. This castle was not lacking a courtyard, a water cistern, or loopholes either. Unfortunately, in the 18th century, estate uprisings definitively destroyed the castle, leaving only a ruin.

During its era of greatest prosperity, the castle was besieged in 1548 by royal troops. At that time, it was seized by the robber knight Melichar Balassa. Less than a hundred years later, the castle passed into the permanent care of the Koháry family. They remained the owners of the castle until its destruction. After 1710, at the end of the anti-Habsburg uprisings, the castle served as a source of building material for Rozhľadňa na Sitne and Kaštieľ vo Svätom Antone.

If you are intrigued by the history of the castle and remember various legends, one tells the tale of the fate of two brothers, the knights of Sitno. The older one received the entire estate from his father on his deathbed; the younger one was not happy with this and built his own castle on Malé Sitno. There may be some truth to these legends shrouded in mystery about Sitno castle.

You can reach Sitno castle by car from the village of Ilija. Following the green hiking trail (an asphalt path through Vlčia jama), the ascent is less demanding, though it takes longer. A path also leads to the castle from Počúvadlianske jazero, also along the green trail past cottages through the forest. After a while, you will reach Tatárska lúka with an educational trail, from where you can take the blue trail directly to the castle.

Along with visiting the castle, it is a great idea to plan an ascent to the Sitno peak. It is also possible to complete it on horseback. A horse, along with a professional guide, can be rented for you at Ranč Nádej in Svätý Anton. You can travel back into history at Kaštieľ vo Svätom Antone. If you come as a family with children, it is a good idea to book accommodation near Sitno castle in advance. In the village of Ilija, there is a choice of several guest houses or private accommodations in Ilija. We believe that you will fully enjoy your time conquering this attraction, also thanks to pleasant accommodation in Slovakia.

Sitno

Sitno

Ilija

Sitno, with its height of 1,009.2 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Štiavnické vrchy mountain range. It lies in the Banská Štiavnica district, within the cadastral territory of the village of Ilija. The peak is shrouded in numerous legends and tales. Almost everyone probably knows the one about the Knights of Sitno, who live inside the Sitno massif and are prepared to help the nation in its worst times.

Another interesting legend is tied to Sitno, concerning the siege of the castle by Tatars belonging to the Ottoman army. They besieged the castle for a long time aiming to starve its inhabitants. When the castle defenders were already desperate, they took their last food supplies, baked a cake from them, and threw it off the ramparts to their enemy. Along with the cake, they sent a message stating that they would continue eating such delicious food for many more years, whereupon the Tatars retreated and left in disappointment. They assumed that the message was true and that they would have to wait for many more years.

The Sitno massif belongs to the Hornád river basin's counterpart, the Hron river basin, where waters from the western slopes are drained. The southern and eastern parts of the massif direct their waters into the Ipeľ river. The massif is deforested at its summit as well as on several slopes, representing a prominent landmark of the landscape that cannot be confused with any other peak.

Sitno is considered the cradle of European mountain hiking. The first hiking club was established in 1860. It was the Sitniansky klub that marked the first historically documented hiking trail from Hodruša, via Počúvadlianske jazero, and Sitno, to Sklené Teplice. This event took place in 1874, when Slovakia was still part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The system of trail markers used on Sitno became an established standard in neighboring countries, as well as in Israel, Brazil, and even the Philippines.

The gamekeeper's lodge on Sitno was converted in 1929 into the tourist refuge Chata Andreja Kmeťa, which can still be used today. During the climb, you will first be captivated by a magnificent view. All surrounding peaks are visible, alongside Pohronský Inovec, Tribeč, Vtáčnik, Kremnické vrchy, Poľana, and Javorie. If the weather is favorable, you will also see Nízke Tatry, Veľká Fatra, and some peaks in Hungary, such as Mátra.

Sitno is a declared archaeological protected site. Remains of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times were found here. Archaeological excavations uncovered a massive Lusatian hillfort over an area of 16 hectares. It was the highest-elevated fortified settlement of the Lusatian culture in our country. Its history dates back to the period between 1200 and 800 BC, with this settlement lasting approximately until the beginning of the AD era. Subsequently, according to further findings, Sitno was resettled in the 11th–12th centuries, when the importance of Banská Štiavnica grew due to ore mining. For that reason, Hrad Sitno castle was built here in the 13th century, the ruins of which can still be admired today. In addition to the castle, Sitno houses Pamätník Exnárovi (Memorial to Exnár), founder of the Sitno partisan unit, and the second oldest observation tower in Slovakia. Inside the tower, exhibitions of archaeological findings from the castle as well as various artifacts of local fauna, flora, minerals, and rock climbing are installed.

Sitno is a habitat for various species of protected plants and animals. Animals notably include the Sitno roe deer (sitniansky srnec) and the common raven. Among plants, there is a strong representation of vegetation found in rock crevices and walls on andesite, approximately 300 forms of roses (already described by Andrej Kmeť), and the occurrence of both thermophilic and mountain plant species (yellow onion, mountain houseleek, martagon lily, and hairy brushwood).

A trail to the summit of Sitno leads from the settlement of Rovne. Following the blue hiking trail, you can reach the summit from Prenčov or from the Krížne pass, crossing Tatárska lúka. Following the green hiking trail, you can go from Počúvadlianske jazero across Tatárska lúka or from the village of Ilija, with this route later joining the aforementioned blue trail. A very nice route leads from Svätý Anton. Along the way, you can also visit the picturesque Kaštieľ Svätý Anton mansion with its museum. Some routes can easily be handled by children or seniors. The ascent is possible year-round.

Sitno and its entire surrounding area is a region packed with activities and attractions that are definitely worth seeing. One day, or perhaps even two, will certainly not be enough. We recommend booking accommodation around Sitno and enjoying a trip filled with all the highlights.

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici is an impressive Baroque sacred complex ranking among the most beautiful in all of Europe. It is situated on Scharffenberg hill, translated as Ostrý vrch, at an altitude of 726 m above sea level. It was created at a time when Banská Štiavnica belonged to the largest and most important free royal towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. It was precisely these favorable economic conditions that drove the development of the town culturally as well. Thanks to this, Kalvária Banská Štiavnica was built on the initiative of the Jesuit František Perger.

The foundation stone of the Horný kostol, one of the 22 structures of the calvary, was laid and solemnly blessed on September 14, 1744. The church, also referred to as the "German" church, was completed in 1745, when it was also consecrated. The rest of the complex was gradually built and subsequently consecrated as well. It took seven years, exactly until September 14, 1751. The construction was made possible thanks to financial donations from townspeople. The most prominent among them have their coats of arms placed on the facades of the chapels. On Trinity Sunday in 1751, the calvary was even visited by Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine himself.

Despite the construction of the calvary during the peak of the Baroque period, the structures maintained appropriate restraint. Their appearance was not distracting and primarily encouraged the inner reflection and contemplation of pilgrims. The entire complex consists of 17 stations (chapels), 3 churches (Dolný kostol, Sväté schody, Horný kostol), the Ecce Homo station (dungeon), and the Holy Sepulchre (Svätý hrob). The chapels are characterized by an unusual arrangement, as the story of Jesus begins in Nazareth. This is precisely what makes the Banská Štiavnica calvary exceptional.

The first three chapels are preparatory, leading to Dolný kostol. From there, the path continues to the seventh chapel and subsequently to Sväté schody, from where the path forks. The chapels on the left side depict the condemnation and torture of Jesus, ending with the scene of his crucifixion in Horný kostol. You walk around Svätý hrob and return along the other side, where the chapels depict the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The statuary of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is the culmination of the entire pilgrimage, located down below again, near Dolný kostol.

As is often the case with buildings, they require reconstruction over time, and the Banská Štiavnica calvary was no exception. The chapels were reconstructed for the first time in 1894. When the coup came in 1948, the ownership of the calvary passed to the state, which resulted in its gradual deterioration. Between 1978 and 1981, the state funded repairs that were mostly carried out by volunteers from the ranks of local believers. The Velvet Revolution probably had the greatest impact on the calvary; its decorations were stolen and subsequently sold off, and the buildings were devastated. What could be saved was relocated to Slovenské banské múzeum located at Starý zámok. Currently, visitors can view these items during the "Kalvária v azyle" exhibition. In 1993, Banská Štiavnica along with the calvary was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The year 2007 was marked by the calvary's inclusion in the list of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world. It was threatened with complete destruction, but since 2008, an extensive reconstruction has been underway to save this unique place. The buildings are being gradually restored; the reconstruction of Dolný kostol was completed first in 2013, followed by some chapels, the amphitheater, sculptural production, and in 2018, Horný kostol as well.

The calvary is among the popular spots in Banská Štiavnica. However, it is not visited only by believers, although pilgrimages, Holy Masses, or various other cultural events are often held here. Tourists are also interested in the history of the site, its flawless architectural design, the painting and artistic craft underlining the details, as well as the overall setting of the location into the natural environment, with which it creates perfect harmony. Malé Studenské jazero

Malé Studenské jazero

Banský Studenec

Malé Studenské jazero lake (also called Malé Kolpašské jazero) is one of two reservoirs (tajchy) in the village of Banský Studenec in the Banská Štiavnica district. The second lake is called Veľké Studenské jazero and lies right next to Malé Studenské jazero, sharing a common dam. Both artificial water reservoirs were built for the needs of the mining industry back in the 18th century. Malé Studenské jazero was constructed in 1763, but historical records only cite it as operational in 1774.

The lakes have long ceased to serve as a water reservoir for the mine; currently, the smaller lake is used for fish farming and the larger one for summer recreation. In 2015, the reconstruction of the dam between the lakes was completed, as it had been undercut several times in previous years. On this occasion, the Slovenský vodohospodársky podnik water management enterprise also built a modern beach by the larger of the reservoirs, which is especially popular with families with small children.

Thanks to the fact that each reservoir has its own role, this area is also suitable for groups whose members have different expectations for their holiday. And it won't stop at just fishing and swimming. The surroundings of the lakes are suitable for mountain biking, and a cross-country triathlon is held here regularly. Several marked hiking trails lead from the village. The settlement of Kysihýbel, known for its arboretum, also belongs to the village. There is no shortage of monuments in this area either; for example, you can visit the underground quarry Diery (or Barlangy), which is listed as a UNESCO technical monument.

Start your search for accommodation near Malé Studensko jazero directly in the village of Banský Studenec, where cottages are available for rent, among other options. Bašta Štiavnické Bane

Bašta Štiavnické Bane

Štiavnické Bane

In the picturesque nature of Štiavnické vrchy, you can find a small treasure. It is hidden on the steep slope of the village of Štiavnické Bane, offering a stunning view of the surrounding area. Visit the circular Bašta Štiavnické Bane, which is one of the popular tourist attractions in this region.

Bašta v Štiavnických Baniach was once part of the defense system of the anti-Turkish fortifications. Today, it is one of the restored attractions of the village. This is mainly because the original bastion underwent reconstruction, and its founder built a museum inside dedicated to Maximilián Hell, a native of the village. During the tour, as part of one of the two exhibition sections, you can view information panels concerning, for example, the first observatory in Slovakia founded in 1878, the first mine surveying office, or the first school or hospital established in this mining region. On the next two floors, you will also take a look at significant milestones of the village. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of the aforementioned Catholic priest, Jesuit, astronomer, mathematician, and physicist Maximilián Hell.

The museum is open on weekdays (except Monday). A set of 175 wooden steps will lead you to it. In addition to regular tours, guided visits combined with sky observation are organized twice a year. This is possible thanks to a professional telescope that the village purchased for the exhibition. Naturally, an expert is also invited to these events.

If you would like to enrich your trip with other interesting places, we recommend visiting the beauty of Prírodný park AVES. If you visit this region in summer, there is an opportunity to swim in the surrounding tajchy artificial lakes. The closest to the bastion is Veľké Richnavské jazero. You can visit Škola v múzeu not only with children. With a headlamp on your head, you can explore Banské múzeum v prírode - Banská Štiavnica. After a continuous layer of snow falls, you can ski on the slopes of the popular Salamandra Ski Resort.

Don't feel like rushing back home? Stay longer and book accommodation near Bašta Štiavnické Bane. There is a choice of many apartments or smaller cottages in Štiavnické Bane. It only depends on your preferences which accommodation you choose. We will be happy to help you with your choice.

Evičkino jazero

Evičkino jazero

Štiavnické Bane

Evičkino jazero is an artificially built body of water on the outskirts of the village of Štiavnické Bane. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, making it one of the oldest tajchs in the vicinity of Banská Štiavnica. Evička, just like other tajchs, served mining purposes, specifically as a water reservoir for the famous Horná Bieber adit, which is also called the "Mother of All Mines". In 1629, the world's first documented mining blasting took place in this adit, triggering a literal revolution in tunneling.

Currently, the tajch is used for summer recreation and fishing. Access to the lake and the water is seamless, and the water surface is surrounded by gentle slopes where holidaymakers usually sunbathe, engage in sports activities, or just relax in the shade of trees and admire the beauty of the surroundings. The water quality in the lake is regularly checked by the Public Health Authority (Úrad verejného zdravotníctva) and is safe for swimming. Summer recreation also includes refreshments, and Evička is no exception, with a snack bar available on site.

Alongside lake Evička, the Piargsky vodohospodársky náučný chodník passes through, explaining the operation and history of the tajchs and water adits across 16 information boards. This trail in the CHKO Štiavnické vrchy protected landscape area is about 15 km long, although a shorter 10 km route can be chosen. As part of this easy trail, in addition to Evička, you will also visit the Počúvadlo, Bakomi, and Richnavské tajchs. Besides all the lakes in this area, we also recommend visiting the town of Banská Štiavnica, which will enchant you with its history. Here you can see Nový zámok and Starý zámok, the Slovenské banské múzeum, or Banka lásky in the house of Sládkovič's Marína.

The closest accommodation to Evičkino jazero can be found directly in the village of Štiavnické Bane, where cottages are most commonly available, but you can also find an apartment or guesthouse. An even more diverse offer can be found in Banská Štiavnica, where you can book a room in a guesthouse by the water, a comfortable cottage on the outskirts of town, or a modern apartment. This location is truly unique, as nowhere else in Slovakia do you have a choice of so many bodies of water. Come and try not only Evičkino jazero, but also the other tajchs.

Halčianske jazero

Halčianske jazero

Banská Belá

The area of Štiavnické vrchy is also known because gold was mined here a long time ago. Energy was needed for its mining, which led to the construction of "tajchy" (artificial water reservoirs). One of the popular and well-known reservoirs in this area is Halčiansky tajch, also known as Halčianske jazero. Come and enjoy your summer holiday right in the village of Banská Belá.

The sun-drenched forest environment and high temperatures will be appreciated by every single holidaymaker in Banská Belá. Right in this village lies an undiscovered treasure of the region, which was created in the second half of the 18th century by damming a stream. This stream flowed in from the settlement of Halča, which belonged to Banská Belá. The original purpose of the reservoir was to power stamp mills and metallurgical facilities in the local village as well as in the Kozelnícka dolina. In 1909, the reservoir was handed over to the Vysoká banícka a lesnícka škola v Banskej Štiavnici. Later, the reservoir served for fish breeding and fishing.

Halčiansky tajch is an artificially created water reservoir. Many locals use it for recreational purposes because it is not as heavily sought after. You enjoy relative peace, solitude, and perfect relaxation here thanks to its more secluded location compared to other lakes. The depth of the reservoir is 13 meters, which is also great for fish farming. Spanning an area of more than 4 hectares, you will easily find your own little spot for sunbathing.

As we have already mentioned, the lake also serves fishing purposes. In addition to breeding, fishing is also permitted here. Within the overall environment, it forms an important landscape feature. Take in the surrounding views and notice the viaduct from the dam, over which a train occasionally passes. To fully enjoy your stay with joy, we recommend booking accommodation near Halčianske jazero. Plan your holiday during the second Saturday of July and rest assured that a fantastic experience awaits you. Every year, a wooden crocodile is retrieved from the lake during a special event.

The village of Banská Belá is an attractive destination from a tourism perspective. Nearby is the district town of Banská Štiavnica, which offers numerous historical monuments and other interesting attractions. It is nice to have a coffee or ice cream at Námestie Svätej Trojice and enjoy the architecture of this ancient mining town. On the way, you can stop and explore the exhibitions at Kaštieľ Svätý Anton. On the way back, try horseback riding at Ranč Nádej. The best solution for you will be to book a chalet near Banská Belá, from where swimming and discovering the surrounding beauty will be right at your fingertips. Will you accept the offer for this type of holiday in Slovakia?

Banské múzeum v prírode - Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Banské múzeum v prírode Banská Štiavnica is located on the edge of the town, in a picturesque valley below the Klinger tajch. The open-air museum operates under the auspices of the Slovenské banské múzeum v Banskej Štiavnici, which was established in 1964 and altogether represents a complex of 8 exhibitions.

It is our oldest and most extensive mining exhibition in terms of theme. It depicts the development of ore mining in the Central European region from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. The tour, along with an interesting commentary by a guide, will answer questions such as what it was like to be a miner, what machines they used, how hard their work was, what the techniques of descending into the mine (fáranie) were, and what miners had to master. This is a very interesting part of our history.

The horse-powered whim (gápel) is considered the most valuable exhibit of the Banská Štiavnica open-air museum. It is the only mine elevator engine-machine that has been preserved in Slovakia. Likewise, the Kachelman water-column hoisting engine is a very valuable exhibit, serving as a monument to the era of machines that saved Banská Štiavnica mining from extinction in the 18th century.

As part of the surface exhibition of the Banská Štiavnica open-air museum, not only a tour of unique technical mining monuments and buildings of the entire region is included, but also the very popular Náučno geologická expozícia. On a relatively small area, it depicts the geological development of Slovakia. Among the popular experiences of the Banská Štiavnica open-air museum is descending into the Bartolomej adit. This is an underground tour carried out under strict safety conditions (covered respiratory tract, helmet, coat, disinfection).

The open-air museum area is also suitable for families with children. They have an unforgettable experience in the mine and can shorten their time at the playground or by the little trains. Therefore, do not hesitate and plan a trip to this unique mining museum. When booking accommodation, the accommodation Banská Štiavnica page will be helpful to you.

Nový zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Nový zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Come with us to the land of mythical undergrounds, treasures, and gnomes. Venture below the Earth's surface, to crystal-clear lakes in the middle of green forests, come to paradise. Where can you find it? In Banská Štiavnica. There are only a few places that feature a beautiful castle. And even fewer where you can find two right in one place. Banská Štiavnica is just like that. In addition to Starý zámok, you will also find Nový zámok here, proudly towering over the town.

The Renaissance building originally served as a watchtower. And it is truly majestic, called a castle not just for nothing. Its task was to repel Turkish raids. Construction began in 1564 and was completed 7 years later. The massive tower above the town center had as many as 6 floors, with 4 defensive bastions on its corners. After a later reconstruction, the number of floors was reduced from 6 to the current 4.

High on the hill, Nový zámok played an important role. During periods of threat, it was part of a signaling system monitoring enemy movement from the village of Pukanec all the way to the village of Ľubietová. In addition, the castle was also useful to the general population. The tower's function was to announce the time. Every quarter of an hour by bugling and every hour by ringing a bell.

The role of the castle vanished after the Turkish invasions subsided. Nevertheless, gunpowder needed for mining drift excavations was stored here for a long time afterward. Nový zámok stood out with its strong defense, with up to 21 battle-ready cannons located around it.

What is the current function of the castle? It is one of the most sought-after tourist attractions in the area. The owner is Slovenské banské múzeum, which has its exhibition nearby right inside a mine. Inside the castle, you will find exhibits focused specifically on the defense of Banská Štiavnica against the Turks. Deep inside Nový zámok, you will learn everything you want to know about the situation back then. And a reward awaits you too: an unforgettable view from the top of the tower over magical Banská Štiavnica.

When you return from Nový zámok, you can also pop over to Starý zámok. Do not miss a walk through the historic town center with its steep, narrow lanes. The local plague column in the square is a true gem. Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. Numerous trails lead through the nearby mountains, showing you the beauty of the tajchy reservoirs. What used to be technical water reservoirs are now popular recreational destinations. You can find a diverse plant world in the botanical garden and clear your spirit with a walk up to Kalvária.

Find stylish accommodation in this medieval town. With us, it will be a breeze. We offer guest houses in historic burgher houses, as well as affordable private accommodations or cottages in the immediate vicinity. You are guaranteed to have Nový zámok right outside your window, as it is simply unmissable.

Bakomiho jazero

Bakomiho jazero

Štiavnické Bane

Have you come to Štiavnické vrchy to enjoy the local atmosphere? If so, do not hesitate and, on summer days, refresh your sun-heated bodies in one of the beautiful tajchy (artificial mining lakes), at Bakomiho jazero. It is located in the cadastral area of the village of Štiavnické Bane.

Bakomiho jazero is also known for belonging to the group of Piargske vodné nádrže reservoirs, which were used in the past to obtain energy resources for mining and ore processing. This body of water was built between 1738 and 1740. Its builder was J. T. Brinn. For the system to function fully, Bakomiho jazero was connected to the Malá Richňavská water adit.

Currently, the lake is primarily used for recreational purposes. On hot summer days, its clean, cool water will pleasantly refresh you. You can also hide from the scorching sun in the shade of the trees. Although the lake is not among the most sought-after in the region and many tourists do not even know about it, this is one of the reasons why a peaceful atmosphere prevails here. Many couples in love also use this place for romantic walks, after which a rest on a wooden bench comes in handy.

Reaching this beautiful smaller tajch is relatively simple. Even though access is somewhat worse than to other surrounding lakes, you simply need to park your car in the village of Štiavnické Bane at the parking lot just above the lake coming from Richňava. From here, a connecting pedestrian path leads to Bakomiho jazero.

If you would like to make your time even more pleasant with other activities, you can easily include exploring the Banské múzeum v prírode - Banská Štiavnica in your plan. Do not miss the intricately detailed Banskoštiavnický betlehem either. If you do not feel like walking so much, feel free to travel on the Štiavnická Anča sightseeing train. In the winter season, skiing at Salamandra Ski Resort will come in handy.

Klinger

Klinger

Banská Štiavnica

Klinger is one of the most beautiful tajchs (artificial water reservoirs) in the Banská Štiavnica region. It is located near the popular Banské múzeum v prírode. Beautiful, at times almost turquoise water uniquely embedded in the natural environment makes it an ideal place for relaxation. Although the water in the tajch is somewhat cooler, it lies in the lap of unspoiled nature, surrounded by nearby forests. It is therefore a sought-after location for families with children as well. You can reach tajch Klinger via a pleasant walk.

It was artificially created in 1759 as a source of energy water for the Ondrej and Žigmund shafts. Its maximum depth is 21 meters. Later, in 1850, by decision of the ministry of the former Vienna government, a swimming facility was built at this location to "ensure the health and cleanliness of the mining folk." Given the era at the time, various restrictions applied. An interesting one was the scheduling of swimming times, which were set for women in the morning and for men in the afternoon.

A historical point of interest is that due to necessary repair work, the first Slovak surface railway track was built here in the 1830s. Tajch Klinger was even depicted on Slovak postage stamps in 2003 as an important technical monument.

Tourists exploring the surroundings consider the Klinger reservoir to be merely a kind of "resting station," since after crossing the dam you reach a trail. With a manageable incline along the collapse pit (former Weiden shaft) and the former Amálka shaft, it leads you to the old mining settlement of Horná Roveň. From there, you will enjoy incredible views of the ancient Štiavnica stratovolcano as well as Sitno peak.

Banská Štiavnica rightfully ranks among the most beautiful Slovak towns. Directly in the town, but also in its immediate surroundings, there are so many attractions that a single day will guaranteed not be enough for your visit. We recommend booking a stay on the page accommodation Banská Štiavnica and perhaps planning the rest of your stay while relaxing by the tajch.

Štôlňa Glanzenberg

Štôlňa Glanzenberg

Banská Štiavnica

Štôlňa Glanzenberg is located in the oldest mining town in Slovakia, Banská Štiavnica. Its name is derived from the German word "glänzen", which translates as to shine or sparkle. This hereditary (drainage) adit is one of the oldest mining adits in this region. Did you know that the term hereditary comes from the fact that it was constructed by several generations of miners?

The history of Banská Štiavnica is very closely tied to the extraction of precious ores and non-ferrous metals, which were mined here for over a thousand years. The oldest written mention of the adit dates back to 1560. You will find the adit, which originally measured up to 16 km, near the Monument to the Fallen Heroes of World War II, in the park on Kammerhofská ulica. Its main function was the mining of gold-silver ores on the Špitaler vein. In a later period, it served for transport, ventilation, and the descent of technicians.

The opened section, which ends at the Kaufhaus shaft, has a depth of 32 m and a length of 500 m. Štôlňa Glanzenberg was made famous by several visits from monarchs and emperors of the Viennese court. In 1751, it was visited by Crown Prince Francis Stephen of Lorraine (husband of Maria Theresa), who later became Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The last significant descent was made by Emperor Franz Joseph I on July 7, 1852. At the end of the accessible section, there are the "imperial stairs" connecting the Kaufhaus shaft with the Horna Svätotrojičná štôlňa adit excavated below. At this location, you will find commemorative plaques installed in their honor.

The tour of the adit can be taken by adults and children over 6 years of age. Before entry, museum staff will equip you with a protective coat, helmet, and flashlight, as the adit premises are not illuminated. The total tour time is approximately 90 minutes. The adit can be visited from spring to autumn, and you should always announce your visit in advance by phone. As a nice souvenir of your visit to this unique adit, you can mine a small piece of ore yourself.

After a 1.5-hour excursion in complete darkness, enjoy your time in daylight and visit the beautiful botanical garden, where you have the opportunity to discover over 200 species of domestic and exotic trees. In addition to a abundance of flora, you can also admire the historical buildings of the Mining and Forestry Academy. Take a romantic stay with your partner in Banská Štiavnica. Starý zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Starý zámok - Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica

Slovakia's past is largely tied to its mining history. Many of our regions were well-known mining towns in the past. We can find them in the central part of Slovakia. Specifically at Banská Štiavnica, one of the most famous mining towns ever.

In the times of glory and wealth extracted from the ground, it was also necessary to protect it. Castles and châteaux were a natural way of protection. The Starý zámok was built for this purpose. This well-preserved castle complex is characterized by many unique features. It was established as an anti-Turkish fortress to protect against the devastating raids of the Turks. Despite the castle being called Starý (Old), it is not that old. It was created only in 1486, when many other castles already had a few centuries of existence behind them. Its origin is equally bizarre. It was not built as a new structure, but as a reconstruction of the existing Kostol Panny Márie church.

The basis of the castle is thus unusually the nave of the former basilica. It had stood here for a longer time, and defensive bastions with openings for defense were added to it. Likewise, an embankment was built and the fortification was reinforced. With a bit of perspective, we can say that it was the best-protected church in the entire Kingdom of Hungary (Uhorsko). However, under the influence of these reconstructions, the character of the building changed, and so the entire complex began to serve as a town castle.

Today's national cultural monument underwent its last reconstruction in 1777. It was in this year that an entrance tower was added to the castle, which is visibly better preserved than the original castle that gradually lost its role over time. Later, it housed a library, archives, and the municipal police. What is the situation with Starý zámok today?

The building itself is exceptionally interesting, if only due to the former existence of the basilica. Architecture lovers will find plenty to enjoy. In addition, there is a regional history and archaeology exhibition where you will learn many interesting facts about the history of mining in the region and much more. For example, about pipe-making.

It is not only Starý zámok that makes Banská Štiavnica worth a visit. Nový zámok, the historic square, or the opportunity to discover traditional crafts are the main draws of the town hidden in the mountains. Do not miss a tour of the mine, and if you want to relax, take a walk through the surrounding forests and unwind by the famous tajchs (tajchy).

Banská Štiavnica is a town in the mountains. It combines these two advantages when looking at accommodation options as well. Modern hotels? Guesthouses in old burgher houses? Cottages in the mountains in the middle of the forest? You will find everything in one place. In Banská Štiavnica. Take advantage of its unique location and all the attractions it offers to make a unique trip. Whoever comes here once will surely want to return.

During your visit to the gallery, you can also admire the tasteful architecture of the building, courtyards, and unusual corners. Hrad Čabraď

Hrad Čabraď

Čabradský Vrbovok

In the middle of Krupinská planina, at the end of a rocky promontory, the zrúcanina hradu Čabraď castle ruin rises in the embrace of the Litava stream. This place breathing with history is situated southeast of the village of Čabradský Vrbovok, in the Krupina district. The remains of the Gothic castle are still massive and impressive today. Here you can admire the remnants of fortifications, structures, and outer walls of residential buildings. You can reach the castle hill on a comfortable walk from the village in approximately 50 minutes. The easy route leads you through the adjacent forest, across the river, past the building and chapel of the Koháry family, all the way to the mysterious ruin.

History is mysteriously silent about the castle's origins. However, it is assumed that its role was to control the road connection from Šahy to Krupina. Sources even mention that two castles with the same name were located on the castle hill. The older Litava castle vanished at the beginning of the 14th century. It was reportedly located southeast of the new Litava castle, which was later named Čabraď. Its origins date back before 1342, and its first royal administrator was supposedly Charles Robert. Subsequently, the building frequently changed owners until its last owner, František Koháry, had it set on fire in 1812. Miraculously, despite the devastating fire, the castle did not turn completely to waste, but fell into oblivion for long decades. At the end of the 20th century, the first conservation of the courtyard took place, and since 2000, a local civic association has been taking care of the ruin.

In its time, the castle complex consisted of a dominant tower and a courtyard with residential palaces and utility buildings. The entrance led from the northern side via a drawbridge. The outer perimeter fortification protected the castle on the western side. On three sides, the Litava stream provided strategic protection for the castle. The eastern part consisted of a residential building, the southwest featured a gate with a bastion, and the south had an entrance gate with a tower, loopholes, and a bridge.

The ruin is freely accessible to the public today. A civic association takes care of maintaining the remaining fortifications and residential building ruins that recall the bygone glory of the monumental structure. Primarily thanks to them, the castle complex is not overgrown by vegetation and remains easily accessible to visitors. Thanks to their hard work, you also do not have to worry about a large presence of snakes at the castle. Čabradský hradný vrch is actually a nature reserve with the richest population of reptiles in Slovakia. Numerous grass snakes live here in particular.

In addition to the mysterious zrúcanina hradu Čabraď, you can also take a trip in the nearby area to the remains of hrad Cerovo castle or the sprawling Bzovník fortress. And if you long for a bird's-eye view of the surrounding natural beauty, you can head to Rozhľadňa na Prašnom vrchu lookout tower or the stone watchtower Vartovka. There are truly plenty of excursion options and tourist attractions in the surroundings of Krupina. We therefore recommend looking for accommodation near hrad Čabraď and setting out to explore this diverse region. Accommodation in Krupina is particularly appealing due to a wide range of popular cottages and chalets, which attract tourists and holidaymakers with the promise of comfort and convenient access. Will you let yourself be tempted as well?

Together with several other objects, it was inscribed on the UNESCO list, specifically within the territory of Banská Štiavnica and its surroundings. It is located at an altitude of 528 m a. s. l. For interest, we will also state a few technical parameters. The lake has a volume of 641,000 m3, an area of 4.33 ha, and a maximum depth of 21 m.

This artificial lake was created, similarly to others in the locality of Banská Štiavnica, for the needs of metallurgy. Currently, it is a popular place for vacationers from the entire surroundings, as well as more distant corners of Slovensko. It is set in a enchanting natural environment that offers diverse options for more or less demanding hiking, walks, and visits to various attractions in the Žarnovica district.

You will appreciate swimming in Hodrušské jazero even if you travel to it together with children. Its banks are modified so that the entry into the water is gradual. Baňa Starovšechsvätých

Baňa Starovšechsvätých

Hodruša - Hámre

Baňa Starovšechsvätých v Hodruši-Hámroch represents one of the oldest and best-preserved mining monuments in the region of Central Slovak mining towns, revealing to visitors an authentic underground world unchanged for centuries.

The site is located in the village of Hodruša-Hámre, in the Žarnovica district, within the Banská Bystrica Region. Baňa Starovšechsvätých is exceptional because it has preserved its original medieval and early modern form without significant modern interventions, allowing visitors to admire the precise work of old master miners. During the tour, you pass through narrow and low corridors that were carved by hand using a chisel and hammer, while traces of this strenuous activity are still visible on the walls today. The exhibition includes not only the mining spaces themselves, but also unique underground chambers, technical monuments, and a mining museum housed in the historic building of the knocker (klopačka). Guides, who are often former miners, enrich the commentary with expert knowledge on geology, mineralogy, and the life of the mining community in Hodruša. The atmosphere underground is enhanced by silence and a constant temperature, with the light of miners' lamps highlighting shimmering minerals in precious metal veins. Due to its authenticity and historical value, the mine forms an important pillar of education about Slovakia's technical heritage and reminds us of the importance of the Hodruša mining district for the former European economy.

What can you find here?

In the area and underground of the mine, you will find accessible historic adits, mining exhibitions with tools, and a unique exhibition of minerals and precious metals. The historic knocker building is available, housing further museum exhibits and documents on the village's history. Before entering the underground, visitors are lent a protective coat, helmet, and miner's lantern for safe movement in the corridors.

Who is the place suitable for?

The place is ideal for lovers of history, geology, and technical monuments who are looking for an authentic experience without commercial additives. It is also sought after by school groups as part of educational excursions and tourists who want to discover the true face of medieval mining. Due to the character of the underground, where there are narrow spaces and low ceilings, the visit is not recommended for people with claustrophobia, and reasonable physical mobility and sturdy footwear are required.

What can you visit in the surroundings?

Just a few kilometers from the mine lies the historic Banská Štiavnica (UNESCO) with numerous monuments, such as the Old and New Castles (Starý and Nový zámok). You can also visit nearby artificial water reservoirs known as tajchy, such as Hodrušský tajch, which offers opportunities for swimming in nature, or the picturesque village of Štiavnické Bane. For view enthusiasts, there is a hike to Mount Sitno or a visit to the Calvary in Banská Štiavnica.

Lipovina

Lipovina

Bátovce

The Lipovina water reservoir is located in the Nitriansky kraj region near the village of Bátovce, not far from the town of Levice. This water body lies on the border of the Podunajská nížina lowland and the Štiavnické vrchy. It is a popular spot not only for locals who come here to relax by the water, but also for fishermen and vacationers looking to swim or unwind.

Lipovina was built on the stream called Jabloňovka in the 1960s. Its primary purpose was agricultural use for irrigating surrounding fields. In addition, the reservoir served to balance water flow and provide flood protection. The Lipovina water body has always attracted local residents, who also took care of its surroundings. They built sanitary facilities, buffets, a restaurant, and even a campsite here.

Since the inflow of the Jabloňovka stream is no longer as strong, the water in the Lipovina reservoir stagnates rather than exchanges. Therefore, the water quality is no longer what it used to be, and swimming is permitted at your own risk. Nevertheless, families with children and groups of friends enjoy gathering here. Children splash around in the water while adults refresh themselves at the buffets and enjoy the sun-drenched beach. Access to the water is gradual, and the surrounding nature full of trees provides plenty of shade if you want to hide from the sun.

You can comfortably reach the Lipovina water reservoir by car, as well as on foot or by bike along the educational trail named „Okolo mesta kráľovien“. That is what Bátovce used to be called. It starts at the Roman Catholic Church of Svätý Martin in Bátovce and ends at the water reservoir. Its length is 5.3 kilometers and it will lead you past the Bátovská kúria manor house, across the Baroque bridge (Barokový most), further through the Ľochy wine-growing settlement, where the Lipovina grape variety is grown, all the way to the reservoir of the same name. Information boards will tell you a piece of history about the town where queens used to meet.

The Bátovské jazero, as it is also called, is a paradise for fishermen. Cyprinid fish thrive here, and given its quiet and peaceful location, the Lipovina reservoir is made for a proper fishing trip. In addition to carp and pike-perch, catfish were also stocked here in the past. So fishermen, grab your rods and catch your fish.

Thinking about a holiday in the Tokaj region? We offer you accommodation near the Lipovina water reservoir and accommodation in the Levice district on our portal. Whether you are looking for a comfortable guest house, a family apartment, a cottage, or a chalet, you will certainly choose from us. We have also prepared tips for other attractions in the Nitriansky kraj region for you. Book your holiday as soon as possible and you will not regret it.

Banská klopačka Hodruša-Hámre

Banská klopačka Hodruša-Hámre

Hodruša - Hámre

In the village of Hodruša – Hámre, in the Pohronie region, you will find one of the last five preserved mining knockers in Slovakia – Banská klopačka Hodruša Hámre. The origin of this rare structure dates back to 1521, and its name suggests that it announced various important events with its loud knocking.

Hodrušská klopačka was built as part of an early warning system for the population against military and Turkish threats, and it also served to summon miners to work. This ancient mining tradition originates back in the times of Byzantine monasteries. The type of event was distinguished according to the rhythm and intensity of the knocking.

Most frequently, it announced the start and end of work in the mine, funerals, fires, or other dangers. A very valuable component of the knocker is the still-functional clock made by master Reuprich in 1779. It is a hand-forged clockwork mechanism with stone-and-steel weights hanging via a pulley on ropes. These pass through openings in the floor along the entire height of the building. A caretaker oversees their accuracy and winds them up every 24 hours. Once a week, he must inspect, clean, and lubricate the entire mechanism.

The clockwork mechanism is connected by a rope to a bell in the tower, which strikes the time at regular intervals. An interesting fact is that although the clock face has two arms, it only has an hour hand. The other part of the arm is moon-shaped and serves only for balancing. Did you know that there are only a few similar clockwork mechanisms in the entire world?

On the top gallery, so-called klopačkári (knockers) were on duty day and night. The sound spreading from here was produced by a hammer striking an ash wood board. If you would like to see the mining tower from the inside as well and enjoy a nice view of the surrounding area, book your visit by phone with a local guide.

On the way down from the tower, treat yourself to a romantic walk around Hodrušské jazero, which is perfect for a picnic. If you have planned your visit to Hodrušská klopačka for the winter season, pack your skis and get ready for great skiing at Salamandra Ski Resort. You do not have to travel far for accommodation.

A rich selection of accommodation in the immediate vicinity of Banská klopačka Hodruša-Hámre can be found on the accommodation Hodruša – Hámre page. You can choose from fairytale Hodrušské chalets and cottages as well as modernly furnished apartments. During your stay, treat yourself to rest and relaxation at Vodný raj Vyhne, which is open all year round.

Hrad Cerovo

Hrad Cerovo

Cerovo

Among the popular destinations for tourists today are the now minuscule remains of the Cerovo castle ruins, which are located near the village of the same name. Set out for the Krupina district. Approximately 20 km southeast of this district town, between the hills of the Krupina forest on the northern end of Pustý vrch, once stood a beautiful castle.

Hrad Cerovo, which many also knew under the name Litava, is best accessible directly from the main route Dudince – Veľký Krtíš. Past the turnoff towards the village, you will see a bridge leading over the Litava stream. Here you can park your car and set off on foot for the castle hill. The ascent up from this side is steeper and is mostly manageable only by hikers in good physical condition. For families with older children or less fit hikers, we recommend the ascent via the ridge of Pustý vrch, which can be reached via a field road. Breathing in the fresh air, listening to the chirping of birds, and admiring the beauty of the mixed forest will delight the soul of every person.

After ascending to the summit, the area of the former castle, which is currently hidden by the forest, is clearly visible. However, two large sections separated by a moat will not escape the attentive eye of the visitor. Unfortunately, this is all that has been preserved of it. The first mention of the castle dates back to 1276. At that time, it was built by Hontpazmányi named Hont. In some sources, the construction of the castle is linked to his son Dezider the Great. The castle did not live to see its glory partly because it was destroyed in the 14th century. Its restoration no longer took place, as the nearby Hrad Čabraď had been built.

Even though almost nothing remains of the castle, a trip here is worth your while due to the beautiful environment and the wonderful view from the castle hill. For the journey, you can pack various snacks in your backpack and treat yourself to a day in the company of those with whom you feel pleasant. The bolder ones might be tempted by the idea of pitching a tent in the forest and watching the stars shining in the mysterious sky after dark. For others, it is more realistic to book accommodation near Hrad Cerovo, so that, for example, on a nice summer morning, they can set out to observe the surroundings from this spot.

After this hike, you can see for yourself with your own eyes what condition the aforementioned Hrad Čabraď castle is currently in. It was built in the Gothic style and its remains astonish people to this day. Those who are not afraid of heights will certainly be interested in the lookout tower on Prašný vrch, or perhaps the stone watchtower Vartovka. Horse lovers will find what they are looking for at Ranč pod Žobrákom. They will gladly rent you bicycles here as well, so you can discover the undiscovered beauties of the Hont region.

Believe us that staying here for a longer time is worth it. To convince yourself, choose from the offer of accommodation facilities featured on our portal. Will a photo of the living room of a chalet in Cerovo intrigue you, or will a photo of an apartment catch your eye instead? It all depends solely on you. Whether you decide based on feelings or other criteria of your choice will dictate, we will be happy to help you.

Hrad Dobrá Niva

Hrad Dobrá Niva

Podzámčok

There is no doubt that Slovakia is a country of castles. Historians estimate that over 180 of them were built during the Middle Ages. However, only 17 of them have been preserved to this day. Among the castles that were not so lucky is Hrad Dobrá Niva. You can find the ruins of the Gothic fortified residence on a hill above the village of Podzámčok, just 4 km from the village of Dobrá Niva.

In the past, Dobronivský hrad played a very important role. It protected the old trade route leading south of Zvolen through Liptov and Orava all the way to Poland. This important postal and trade route was once called Via Magna. The first written mention of the fortress comes from 1305, where it is referenced as Castrum de Dobronya. In 1306, Matúš Čák Trenčiansky became its owner, taking it from Demeter Zólyomi. After his death, it passed through many owners. The Eszterházy family owned it the longest, from 1614 until 1804.

Not only good people always lived at the castle. One of the cruel rulers was Štefan Verböci, who entered history with the infamous Tripartitum code of laws. It cast many inhabitants of former Hungary into serfdom.

It is not known when the castle fell into ruin. In 1805, it was purchased by the Royal Court Chamber for the needs of the Mining Chamber, and from then on, the fortress began to decay. Local villagers also contributed to its present state by using it as building material for their dwellings.

The fortified residence once consisted of a two-story Gothic palace with a cellar, a tower, and stone ramparts. A ring of a moat and rampart fortifications wound around the hill. The entrance was protected by two gates, a bastion, and strong fortifications.

To this day, the restored corner of the palace with window openings and two stone consoles that originally supported a bay window have been preserved. In 1996, the ruin underwent reconstruction and conservation works.

A path starting near the church in Podzámčok will lead you to Dobronivský hrad. The entire ascent will take you approximately 20 minutes at a slow walk, and even your little ones can handle it. On the castle hill, a well-maintained area awaits you with restored stairs, benches, and a fireplace where you can roast delicious sausages.

If you still feel like having another adventure, head to Zvolen, where the modern complex Športový areál Orlík awaits you. In Zvolen, you will also find a replica of the Pancierový vlak Hurban armored train, which participated in fighting during the Slovak National Uprising. A very nice excursion will be a trip to Zvolenský hrad castle and to the ruins of Pustý hrad.

One day will certainly not be enough for you to discover the beauties of the region, so book accommodation near Hrad Dobrá Niva and plan trips around the surrounding area. You can choose whether you succumb to the charm of wooden cottages and chalets or prefer a guesthouse with a restaurant. You can find the entire offer on our subpage accommodation Podzámčok.
