Okienkový vodopád

Okienkový vodopád

Hrabušice

In the magnificent surroundings of Národný park Slovenský raj lies the Suchá Belá gorge, home to several waterfalls. One of the gurgling waterfalls, which turns into a breathtaking icefall in winter, is Okienkový vodopád. Although its 8 m height does not make it one of the largest, it is definitely worth seeing. Its beautiful cascades will charm you at first sight.

The lower part of the waterfall consists of a beautiful small lake into which the cold, clear water of the Suchá Belá stream flows. When you get above the waterfall, you will discover the origin of its name. A rock window is located there. You reach it via a ladder, but be careful. The splashing water tends to wet it, making it quite slippery. During the walk through the 3.5 km long gorge, many other waterfalls and small lakes can be found along the course of the stream.

A trip to Suchá Belá is without a doubt worth making in spring. Nature is awakening, the snow is melting, and the waterfalls are gaining volume. In summer, escape here from the overheated city to cool off under the tree canopies; in autumn, you will be left in silent awe of all those beautiful colors. And winter is certainly great as well, magical icefalls bring sparkles especially to children's eyes as they search their surroundings for Olaf. After all, who wouldn't love warm hugs?

When you decide to visit Okienkový vodopád, your starting point will be Podlesok. From the parking lot, your steps will lead along the green hiking trail. After a section of approximately half a kilometer, you will find yourself at the beginning of the gorge. From there, you will continue through true wilderness. Prepare yourself for metal footpegs, small bridges, and especially ladders. Therefore, do not underestimate your choice of clothing as well as quality hiking footwear. With good preparation, the hike is undemanding, and both children and seniors can handle it physically.

The best start to a trip is waking up in accommodation near Okienkový vodopád. The ideal place where you can find suitable lodging is the page accommodation Hrabušice. Once you are there, stay for several days. Košický kraj offers many other trip ideas that are well worth experiencing.

Splav Hornádu

Splav Hornádu

Košice

If you are also among the lovers of natural beauty, enjoy the thrill of adrenaline, and are not afraid of water, we have a wonderful tip for a pleasantly spent time in Eastern Slovakia in the form of the Splav Hornádu rafting and canoeing trip.

Splav Hornádu. Its longer route can start in Kysak near the football pitch. You will complete it under the guidance of an experienced instructor who will successfully and safely guide you to the finish line located at the Košická lodenice boathouse. Set aside at least four hours in your schedule for this pleasant experience. After phone reservation and payment transfer, the guides will welcome you. They will assign your boats, equipment, and give you brief instructions on controlling the vessels and navigation basics. The cruise itself lasts approximately 3 hours, depending on your skills and the number of stops you make.

Shortly after the start, you will sail in boats or rafts to the Trebejovská perej rapid. It is not technically demanding to pass through, but you will certainly enjoy riding its waves. There is a small hydroelectric power plant in Kostoľany nad Hornádom, and you will need to carry your vessel over for approximately 100 meters because of it. This is also an opportunity for a short break and refreshments. Enjoying the trip along the river beneath the canopy of poplars is amazing. Watching fish and waterfowl will appeal to nature lovers. The cool river waves will refresh you even on the hottest summer days. Right before the end of the trip, the Ťahanovská vlna wave will also delight you. It will challenge you a bit more, but there is no need to worry.

The trip is of medium difficulty and can easily be handled by children aged 8 and up. We recommend taking a swimsuit and a T-shirt on the boat. In case of cooler weather, suitable paddling clothing or a waterproof jacket is advised. On sunny days, do not forget to pack sunscreen. It is also important to wear suitable water footwear (sneakers, sturdy sandals) to protect your feet from injury on sharp rocks or glass.

After reaching the Košická lodenica boathouse, the event organizers will, if you wish, transport you back to Kysak by car. This is especially convenient if you left your car or other vehicle there. Naturally, the organizers offer various types of routes as well as canoeing courses or adventurous rafting on the Hornád. However, keep in mind that it is a good idea to book accommodation near the Splav Hornádu.

If you stay dry and feel like exploring the surroundings, be sure to plan trips to nearby attractions. It is great to see all the fascinating plants at the Botanická záhrada Univerzity P. J. Šafárika botanical garden. History is worth delving into at the Východoslovenské múzeum museum. After such a walk, all you need to do is head straight to the city center and enjoy the urban atmosphere. You might even catch the sound of the Zvonkohra Košice carillon.

The region is large enough to have plenty to offer its visitors. So that you do not have to move around constantly, we recommend booking a room on the accommodation Košice – Sever page. Affordable options for you might include accommodation in apartmány Košice – Sever or a room in penzión Košice – Sever. We leave the choice up to you, but we are happy to help.

These largest waterfalls in Suchá Belá are a true treat for your eyes. They are easily accessible, and nimble older children can climb the ladders with ease. Set off on a hike to Misové vodopády from the Podlesok tourist center near Hrabušice. There is a parking lot, a buffet, and a restaurant located here. The gorges in Slovenský raj are subject to a fee year-round, so for a small fee used for the maintenance of tourist trails, you too can enjoy these beautiful waterfalls.

Set out along the green tourist trail. Since Misové vodopády are the very first ones in this gorge, you will reach them very quickly. The waterfalls are formed by the Belá stream, which flows through the entire gorge. Their height reaches 29.5 meters, making them the highest waterfalls in Suchá Belá. The tourist trail leading to them has been in place since 1908, when Slovenský raj was not even a national park yet. However, this trail was the first one made accessible to the public in Slovenský raj.

Misové vodopády are secured with ladders and chains that simplify crossing them. However, caution is never excessive, so watch your step. Wear good footwear, as slipping is a risk on the ladders. At the top of the waterfall is the narrowest point of the Suchá Belá gorge. It is only 1 meter wide, and the rock walls in this section reach a height of up to 150 meters. A larger adult literally has to squeeze through here. Children love it all the more, as they scamper through the narrowest spot like squirrels over the footbridge.

In the Suchá Belá gorge, besides Misové vodopády, you can admire Okienkový vodopád, Korytový vodopád, and the smallest Bočný vodopád. This valley is among the most visited in Slovenský raj, so consider the time of year when you choose to come here. In the middle of summer, there may be a line at the ladders. In any case, the Slovenský raj National Park is a place that must be seen and experienced. Misové vodopády will prove to you that nature can create enchanting phenomena.

Hutnianska jaskyňa

Hutnianska jaskyňa

Bretka

Only a few villages in Slovakia can boast their own karst wealth. One of these exceptional villages is Bretka, located in the Rožňava district, less than 30 km southwest of the district town. On the territory of this small village, you can take a trip through a protected area, which also includes Hutnianska jaskyňa. Its mysterious underground without electric lighting breathes with ancient history.

Through a narrow karst valley, of which the underground corridor is also a part, you will be guided by the Prielom Muráňa educational trail. The starting point of your trip will be the village of Bretka. From here, you will follow an easy loop route approximately 3.2 km in length. Hutnianska jaskyňa will be your last, sixth stop. The underground corridor is 11 meters long. Since the cave is not illuminated, we recommend packing a flashlight or headlamp and sturdy footwear.

The underground is without dripstone decoration, which, however, does not detract from the cave's unique, mysterious atmosphere. Archaeological research has shown that the cave spaces were inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. Later, during World War II, the Germans had their command shelter here. Today, the cave is freely accessible to visitors for recovery and getting to know its natural beauty and historical values. In 1994, the underground was declared a natural monument.

You will probably be surprised, but Hutnianska jaskyňa is not the only accessible underground area in Bretka. Along the educational trail, you will also come across Jaskyňa Peško, whose underground passage is 17 meters long. In the immediate vicinity, we recommend visiting the remnants of one of the oldest Slovak fortresses, Hrad Gemer. And if you enjoy your time underground, head to the nearby Jaskyňa Domica or take a trip through the corridors of Gombasecká jaskyňa. If you decide to stay longer in Gemer, book accommodation near Hutnianska jaskyňa. You can choose from the accommodation offer in Bretka or opt for accommodation in Rožňava.

Children can also ride smaller snowmobiles in a marked circular area. An interesting feature of this attraction is the evening and night rides, which have their own magical atmosphere. Also thanks to the total number of snowmobiles, many companies choose this type of experience as one of their teambuilding forms.

As part of a special offer, the company also provides transport for hikers to mountain huts, material transport, and assistance in organizing hiking and sports events. You can also choose a tour of forest stands during winter calamities specifically on snowmobiles or various other activities in connection with snowmobiles. Rest assured that this experience will always evoke beautiful feelings in you and you will remember it with a smile on your face for the rest of your life.

If you prefer active movement, right in the Ski Rejdová resort you can use groomed slopes. During snowplowing or fast riding, you can notice the untouched nature in the resort and its surroundings. Slavošovský tunel

Slavošovský tunel

Slavošovce

Tunel pod Homôľkou, also known as Slavošovský tunel, is located in the nature of the Štítnická dolina and Revúcka dolina valleys. This structure, which was once meant to connect interesting places, is an unfinished railway tunnel situated in one of the ridges of Stolické vrchy below the Homôlka peak at an altitude of 744.8 m above sea level. Today, it has become a popular tourist attraction that, in addition to exploring its mysterious spaces, offers other opportunities for recreation and entertainment at this location.

Getting to this tunnel is possible if you turn off the main road in the village of Slavošovce toward the valley. The road to it is not very well marked, but if you stick to the marked hiking trail, know that you will manage it successfully. The route from the village center takes approximately 20 minutes on foot and is suitable for everyone, from young children to seniors.

Construction of Slavošovský tunel began in 1941, when we wanted to connect even more with the surrounding world and had no other alternative for a train connection on our territory, as borders began to change. The first breakthrough of the tunnel occurred in 1944. Unfortunately, due to the end of the war and the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), the tunnel was not completed. If you visit today, you can notice that the tunnel is built in the shape of the letter S. It is 2,400 m long, and exploring all of its interior with a headlamp on your head or a flashlight in your hand can be done within 1 hour. However, it depends on how fast you walk. Claustrophobics avoid this place by a wide berth, as there is a sort of "horror atmosphere" prevailing here; you can feel moisture and cold, and all around you is darkness. A visit to this tunnel thus offers an unusual adrenaline experience. The entrance to the tunnel is not fully finished. You descend into it via a wooden staircase with a handrail, where extra caution is required due to slipperiness. Passing through the tunnel is always at your own risk. The only certainty you have here is that no train will run you over.

The Gemer nature hides a wealth of indescribable beauty within itself. If you head here, you certainly will not regret it. You will find peace, harmony, and perhaps a touch of inimitable fairy-tale atmosphere. In the Slavošovce section of the tunnel, an area focusing on fairy tales by Pavol Dobšinský has been built in front of its entrance. You can relax after a light hike under a shelter at the campsite. You can read interesting information on a 3D information board here. The location is sought after primarily by cyclists, as the tunnel is designated as one of the official cycling routes. Mushroom and berry pickers will also find plenty to enjoy here.

The region will win you over with a multitude of trails and routes for cyclists and hikers alike. You can also set off to the beautiful Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa cave. Did you know that aragonite is a rare mineral that occurs only very seldomly? Come and see it here. There are only two such beautiful caves in the entire world. In winter, you will be thrilled by the opportunity to try snowmobiles in the village of Rejdová. A ride on them will delight you so much that you will want to try it more than once. You can step back into the past during a visit to Štítnický hrad (or Štítnik castle). Significant industrial monuments include Huta Etelka. In the past, metallurgical materials extracted in the Gemer region were smelted in this furnace.

Are you interested in exploring even more attractions? Then book accommodation near Slavošovský tunel. There are many accommodation facilities on offer where you can spend a very pleasant stay. Will you choose cozy cottages for your overnight stay, or will affordable private accommodation suffice? We leave the choice entirely up to you! We are ready to gladly assist you.

Morské oko

Morské oko

Remetské Hámre

Morské oko in Remetské Hámre is the largest lake in the Vihorlatské vrchy mountains. It even boasts the title of the third largest natural lake in our country. Ahead of it are only the Tatras tarns, Štrbské pleso and Veľké Hincovo pleso. Morské oko retains its natural charm, beautiful surrounding scenery, and a subtle touch of romance. To soak up the local atmosphere to the fullest, you must visit the Košický kraj region, specifically the Sobrance district.

In the past, the lake was known as Veľké Vihorlatské jazero. It lies at an altitude of 618 m above sea level. It covers an area of 13.8 ha and reaches a maximum depth of up to 25.1 m. Its origin is similar to its smaller brother, the nearby lake Malé morské oko. Landslides and volcanic rocks are responsible for its creation. The location where the lakes are situated belongs to the buffer zone of Chránená krajinná oblasť Vihorlat. This has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. Due to the 5th level of protection, please keep in mind during your stay at the lake that swimming, fishing, and other water activities are strictly prohibited.

Six permanent springs flow into Morské oko, along with several seasonal ones. Its stable water level is maintained by the Okna stream, which drains all excess water away from the lake. The lake, however, is a very interesting natural phenomenon. Thanks to this, the entire surrounding area of 108.48 ha has been declared the Národná prírodná rezervácia Morské oko, which is also part of the NATURA 2000 network.

The lake is very popular, especially with the youngest hikers. The crystal-clear water glistens beautifully, and beneath the surface, you will see larger and smaller fish flickering. There are also benches by the lake so you can relax completely during your trip. Although camping and pitching tents are forbidden here, you can certainly have a family picnic. Feel free to bring a blanket, a picnic basket full of goodies, and perhaps an interesting book. Some shores have grassy areas around them, perfect for such family bonding or lounging to the sound of rustling tree leaves. Keep in mind, however, that whatever you bring with you, you must take away. Littering this area with any trash is strictly forbidden.

When we mentioned that the lake is especially popular with children, we naturally also meant the way to reach it. It is accessible even to less fit hikers, seniors, or young children. From the parking lot, it is only about a 1 km walk with a gentle incline to the lake. It is nothing demanding, and the peace that prevails by the lake is well worth it. However, if you do not intend to just sit idly, you can set off on a walk around the lake. Your steps will lead directly through Vihorlatský prales, along a nice forest path.

During your stay at Morské oko lake, you will certainly not miss Sninský kameň. It rises to an altitude of 1,006 m above sea level and is one of the landmarks of the Vihorlatské vrchy mountains. From its summit, you will enjoy a truly captivating view of Vihorlat and its surroundings. From Hámre, both Zemplínske Hámre and Remetské Hámre. You can get there following the blue hiking trail. An educational trail with a length of 2.5 km and easy terrain also leads around the lake.

It is definitely worth coming here and spending some time by the magical, almost turquoise water of the natural lake. Book accommodation near Morské oko and thoroughly discover all its shores and their complex layout during your stay. If you find accommodation in Remetské Hámre, the locals will surely advise you on many other trip tips in the Sobrance district. All you need to do is grab a backpack, sturdy footwear, and a great holiday can begin.

Hrad Tibava

Hrad Tibava

Podhoroď

In the village of Podhoroď in the Sobrance district, there is a castle ruin from the 13th century. Above the former quarry, you will find the easternmost castle ruin in Slovakia. Tibavský hrad is also one of the smallest castles we have. Come and explore the castle ruins and surroundings from a height of 405 m a. s. l.

In addition to the ruin, the castle hill is home to the Podhorodský hradný vrch nature monument, which was declared as early as 1986. It protects a morphologically prominent cliff rich in vegetation growing on a limestone bedrock. During archaeological research, various ceramic objects and fragments from the 13th and 14th centuries were found in the ruin area.

However, already in the 14th century, the castle is mentioned in written sources as abandoned and desolate. At the very beginning of the 18th century, it was destroyed. The castle originally had an oval layout and a round tower was part of the structure. From it, you can see the preserved stone staircase and vaults. The existence of the courtyard is indicated by a wall and its remains.

We can reach the castle directly from the village of Podhoroď. From the meadow above the village, we continue along a forest path with a steeper climb. Although the climb is more demanding, it does not take long. You can reach the ruins of Hrad Tibava in about 10 minutes.

An interesting fact is that near the castle, approximately 4 km away, you will find another ruin. Tibavský hrad in Choňkovce dates back to approximately the 15th century. Unfortunately, neither of the castles has a preserved sufficient written history, and their close existence remains unexplained.

If you visit Zemplín, do not miss the icon of this region. The Zemplínska Šírava water reservoir is an ideal place for relaxation and peace. Enjoy the sun rays, water, or attractions. Try some of the water sports and spend an active day in a well-known location. Book your accommodation near Hrad Tibava and get to know the beautiful Zemplín.

The location is a protected area within the Chránená krajinná oblasť Vihorlat protected landscape area. It was declared a natural monument back in 1989. The lake itself was formed after limestone mining ceased. Right upon arriving at the lake, Beňatinská veľryba will catch your attention. In the travertine wall above the lake, you will find an imprint resembling the body of a whale. The coloured layers of limestone create a unique phenomenon. This natural painting is unmissable.

The lake itself and the surroundings of the travertine will captivate you in every season. You can also admire the beauty of the surrounding nature during an ascent to the ruins of nearby castles. Embark on an easy hike to Hrad Tibava or Tibavský hrad in Choňkovce. Although very few historical sources have been preserved about these castles, their close proximity to one another is an interesting fact.

Did you know that the nearby Národný park Poloniny is a place characterized by the lowest light pollution in Slovakia? Thanks to this, it is home to protected and unique wildlife. Moreover, thanks to the minimal light pollution, you can enjoy a spectacular starry sky. Therefore, do not miss the Astronomické observatórium na Kolonickom sedle observatory.
