Where to go on a trip Kojšov

Kojšovská hoľa

Kojšovská hoľa

Zlatá Idka

Kojšovská hoľa, with an altitude of 1,225.7 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Kojšovská hoľa sub-subunit, in the area of Slovenské rudohorie within Volovské vrchy. It is also the highest point of the entire Košice-okolie district. The peak is located approximately 16 km west of Košice, between the villages of Kojšov, Opátka, Prakovce, and Zlatá Idka. Tourists visit it year-round. It is used for hiking as well as for sports and recreation.

In summer, the peak is very attractive for tourists. It features a beautiful natural scenery overgrown with heather, cranberry and bilberry bushes, raspberries, and wild strawberries. You can also pick various mushrooms and medicinal plants. But beware, many of the plants you will find here are protected; please only look at them and enjoy their beauty. The red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP trail passes through here. Together with Zlatoidská hora, Kojšovská hoľa forms a very popular hiking duo-combination. Tourists even say that one of the best views from Volovské vrchy is from here. The view of the Tatras is simply unique. Especially at the beginning of winter, when their snow-dusted peaks contrast sharply with the still brown-and-green rounded hills down below them. In the distance, you will also see into Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine.

In winter, Kojšovská hoľa transforms into a skiing paradise. The Kojšovská hoľa – Skipark Erika ski resort is a great space for skiers and snowboarders to enjoy themselves. The resort is accessible by cable car, and high-quality cross-country ski trails also lead through the surroundings. On the way to the peak, you will certainly also encounter ski mountaineers or ski touring enthusiasts. And feel free to build a snowman here too, because winter should be about the joy of snow.

An observatory of the Slovenský meteorologický ústav is located at the peak of Kojšovská hoľa. Right next to it stands a bronze commemorative plaque from 1981 bearing the inscription "česť a sláva hrdinom SNP". Likewise, you will find a box with a summit register here, and about 200 m further on, 49 peace poles with the inscription "nech je mier na Slovensku". They have stood here since 1997 as a symbol of peace in Europe. Slovakia received them as a gift from a Japanese company. You will also see a SNP monument along with an anti-tank gun here since 1999.

Several different routes lead to the peak. You can get here from Gelnica, Kojšov, and Zlatá Idka along the blue trail. You can get to Kojšovská hoľa from the village of Prakovce along the yellow trail. Calculate your hiking time to be approximately 3 hours; in summer, we naturally also recommend sitting down on the sunny peak. So that you do not have to rush home for the hike or from it, book accommodation near the Kojšovská hoľa peak. Try it, for example, on the accommodation Kojšov or accommodation Košice page. You will surely find one that will be just right for you.

Gelnický hrad

Gelnický hrad

Gelnica

If you enjoy going on trips into nature, head up to the cliff behind the town of Gelnica and discover the remains of Gelnický hrad castle. The history of this once grand residence dates back to 1234. In ancient times, it was also known as Thurzov hrad castle. Take a pleasant walk with your family and enjoy quality time spent together in nature. A marked hiking trail leading from the Banícke múzeum museum will guide you to the remains of this medieval fortress.

You will find the ruins of the castle in a place called „zámčisko“. The purpose of constructing the castle was to protect the town and its mines. Since its establishment, it went through many hands. During times of unrest and continuous battles for the Hungarian throne between Ferdinand I of Habsburg and John Zápolya, the castle was destroyed. Following Zápolya's defeat, Ferdinand I gifted Gelnický hrad castle to the nobleman Alexej Thurzo, who had it rebuilt and expanded.

The Thurzo family owned the castle until 1636, when its last male descendant, Michal Thurzo, passed away. For a short time, the castle became state property. In 1638, King Ferdinand III granted it to Count Štefan Csáky and his wife Eva Forgách. During the reign of the Csáky family, several uprisings broke out, during which the castle and the town changed hands repeatedly. The castle began to fall into disrepair, and from 1765 onwards, it served merely as a training ground for the hussars of Gelnica.

The final destruction was brought about by the town itself when it ordered the stone from the walls to be used for the construction of the town hall and adjacent buildings. It is assumed that the castle had four bastions and a main entrance on the eastern side. In addition to the main entrance, there were three other courtyards at the castle. The most well-preserved section is the torso of the castle tower with a window opening and a loophole.

During an archaeological survey in 1963, it was discovered that 14 underground tunnels lead out into the surroundings of the castle. Various artifacts were also found, such as keys, weapons, spurs, and other items. The castle ruins are freely accessible all year round. From the castle hill, you will enjoy a wonderful view over the entire town. If you head to the castle in autumn, your children will certainly be delighted by the chestnuts they find under the trees in the chestnut alley.

After visiting „zámčisko“, set off for Turzovské jazero lake and enjoy a great picnic on its shores. On your travels, you can also stop by the Banícke múzeum, which will introduce you to the history of mining in the area. In the surroundings of Gelnica, there are many fantastic attractions worth visiting. Don't wait and book your weekend stay in the Slovenské rudohorie mountains today. A wide selection of accommodation near the ruins of Gelnický hrad castle can be found on our page accommodation in Gelnica. We wish you a wonderful and undisturbed stay.

At first glance, its surroundings will captivate you with their magnificent coniferous forests and mountain meadows. Did you know that in the past, Jazero Turzov was among the most sought-after spa resorts in Rakúsko-Uhorsku? They were visited mainly by patients with respiratory and nervous system disorders.

The Turzovské kúpele were known throughout the Rakúska-Uhorská monarchy. People went boating on the water surface, and famous Anna bály were held at the spa. There was also a bowling alley and tennis courts. Water from the lake was boiled with pine needles and used for the inhalation of medicinal essential oils. Directly on the shore stood a spa house, which currently provides accommodation and catering services.

The water in Turzovskom jazere is clean and clear, reaching up to 17 meters at its deepest point. During hot summer days, you can swim in it, but only at your own risk. Part of the resort is also the lower lake, by which you will find the detached exhibition of the Baníckeho múzea v Gelnici, the Banský skanzen, and the Jozef adit. The lower lake is not suitable for swimming as it is used for fishing. Both lakes are fed by mountain streams originating in fault zones of rocks, as well as waters from abandoned mining works.

The wonderful environment in the middle of the forest is made for a picnic, so do not hesitate and take a blanket and a basket full of goodies for your trip. Directly on the shore, there is also a fire pit where you can roast delicious sausages. A mining educational trail will lead you to the lake from Gelnica.

After this undemanding walk, set out on a proper hike and conquer Kojšovskú hoľu. The surroundings of Gelnica offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling. In the region of central and western Slovakia, there are two interesting tourist locations associated with the name Green Point and the Kukla hill.

Green Point nad Kluknavou is a unique 35-meter-high lookout tower situated on the Kremenec hill at an altitude of 681 m above sea level. It is the first energy self-sufficient lookout tower in Slovakia, using solar panels and wind turbines to generate its own electricity. A circular panoramic view of Kráľova hoľa, Sľubica, Kloptaň, and the panorama of Spiš opens up from its top. The lookout tower on the Kukla hill (564 m above sea level) is located in the Malé Karpaty mountain range above the village of Píla near Modra. The current 12-meter-high wooden structure stands on the site of the original tower and offers one of the most beautiful views of the nearby Hrad Červený Kameň castle. The Kukla hill is steeped in legends of medieval witches and, thanks to its accessibility, is a popular destination for easy hiking. The location is part of a protected landscape area, and marked hiking trails connecting Modra-Piesok with the valley of the Gidra stream pass through it.

What can you find here?

Near the Green Point tower, you will find modern technological facilities, information panels on renewable energy sources, and a relaxation area with charging stations. On the Kukla hill, there is a classic wooden lookout tower with a ladder climb, near which fire pits and seating for hikers are built. Hrad Sokoľ

Hrad Sokoľ

Sokoľ

The remnants of the mysterious Hrad Sokoľ are located west of the village of the same name, at the end of the Uhrič valley, on Hrádek hill. The village of Sokoľ is situated in the Košice-okolie district. An educational trail leads from its center all the way to the ruins of a medieval castle, the origin of which remains shrouded in mystery to this day. In addition to the stone ruins, tourists are drawn to Hrádek by a castle cave leading underneath the central part of the former structure. Will you find the courage to enter the castle underground?

It is assumed that Hrad Sokoľ was built after the devastating Mongol invasions that marked the beginning of the 13th century. This period is also known as a boom in the construction of stone castles in difficult-to-access terrains, which were intended to serve as refuge in case the Mongol forces returned. Hrad Sokoľ was also virtually hidden in dense forests, far from settled areas. The first written record of its existence dates back to 1299. The structure was likely demolished in the 15th century by the city of Košice, to which it was reportedly gifted by King Sigismund.

Based on current findings, it is believed to have been a smaller castle featuring a guard tower and a residential palace. To this day, only an earthen rampart with a ditch and remnants of the castle walls have been preserved. The greatest attraction for visitors is the castle cave located beneath the castle. It reaches a length of 27 meters and leads underneath the central part of the former structure. You can find the entrance to the cave about 12 meters below the castle on the northeastern slope. It is a modified natural cave that likely served as a cellar.

You can reach the castle ruins and the castle cave via an educational trail leading directly from the village of Sokoľ. In front of the castle ditch, you will be greeted by an information board offering more details about the castle. The entire area is well-maintained, featuring benches that offer a peaceful spot for rest and a mounted double cross. The route from the village to this location is easy, with a length of about 6 km.

Set out on a hike into the history of an almost forgotten Slovak castle. You can combine your trip here with a visit to Slovakia's largest zoo, Zoologická záhrada Košice, or with a hike to the Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta viewpoint, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Hornád valley. Or would you prefer a trip on the Košice Children's Heritage Railway? The choice is entirely yours, as is the selection of accommodation near Hrad Sokoľ. On our portal, you will find a range of accommodations in Sokoľ and the immediate surroundings, as well as an interesting array of options in Košice. Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta

Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta

Veľká Lodina

Most of us would likely locate a natural landmark named Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta near Jánošík's birthplace, in the Malá Fatra mountain range. However, on the map, we will move all the way east, to Slovenské Rudohorie. This unique natural viewpoint is situated in the cadastral area of the village of Veľká Lodina towards Kysak, in the district of Košice - okolie. It is the oldest rock climbing area near Košice and a popular tourist destination with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Jánošíkova bašta is an impressive limestone-dolomite rock with a height of 45–50 metres. Its summit reaches an altitude of 523 m above sea level, and its slopes drop steeply down into the valley of the Hornád river. Climbing in this area began even before the First World War, offering climbers dozens of moderately challenging routes. Tourists can reach this spot along easy, marked trails from the villages of Veľká Lodina and Kysak.

The rocky summits and outcrops represent a natural viewpoint offering a beautiful panorama of the wider surroundings. Spread out before your eyes will be the Hornád valley, Slanské vrchy, the ruins of Hrad Kysak, as well as the Košicko-bohumínska železničná trať railway line. The surrounding area provides picturesque spots for relaxation or a outdoor picnic. The surrounding forests are filled with wild berries, mushrooms, blueberries, cranberries, and strawberries. The entire natural area is rich in dense forests and spacious meadow cover. Everywhere is peace and quiet.

An interesting fact is that the rock named after our national hero was originally called Košútova bašta. It received its first name after the Hungarian politician and fighter for Hungarian independence, Ľudovít Košút. It was renamed to Jánošíkova bašta only after the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic in 1918.

If you feel like taking a walk through beautiful nature or are actively involved in rock climbing, be sure not to miss the opportunity to conquer Jánošíkova bašta in eastern Slovakia. You can combine a trip here with relaxation at Ružínska priehrada or with a visit to the largest zoo in Central Europe, Zoologická záhrada Košice. Hámor v Medzeve

Medzev

Since time immemorial, the inhabitants of Medzev, a small town located in the Košice-okolie district, made their living not only from agriculture and mining, but also from metal processing in hammer mills (hámre). One such workshop, in which a heavy water-driven hammer processed iron, copper, and tin, was situated directly in the town center. Hámor v Medzeve with its complete technical equipment has been preserved to this day as a living technical monument. It introduces visitors to the historical technology of tool making by forging using a water hammer. Seeing this unique mechanism at work is a fascinating experience not only for science and technology enthusiasts.

A hammer mill is a historical workshop designed for metal processing using the energy of running water. Water power drives blacksmith forging hammers, blowers, or bellows to blow air into furnaces. A hammer mill is considered a pioneering mechanism and the first seed of manufactories for producing forged products. The building of Hámor v Medzeve is a combination of stone and wood. It dates back to the second half of the 19th century and is currently managed by the Slovenské technické múzeum. Technologically, it is a single-hammer two-hearth mill. In addition to the historical technology of metal processing, it introduces visitors to the ingenuity and skill of Medzev blacksmiths.

In the interior of the historical building, also called Tischlerov hámor or Mestský hámor, the technical museum has prepared a unique exhibition of small-scale ironwork production for visitors. Through hammer mill equipment, tools, and products, it illustrates the picture of the work of old blacksmiths in hammer mills. Hámor v Medzeve, along with its technical equipment, was declared a national cultural monument. The interior is accessible to the public during limited hours or upon request. Before visiting, we recommend verifying the possibility of entry by phone.

You can combine a tour of Medzev's technical jewel with a visit to the local Hvezdáreň a planetárium or with summer relaxation at Kúpalisko Medzev. In the nearby village of Jasov, you can view a magnificent historical monument, Premonštrátsky kláštor, and walk through the picturesque underground of Jasovská jaskyňa. This region offers truly diverse holiday possibilities. Come see it for yourself with your own eyes. Book accommodation near Hámor v Medzeve right now and start preparing for an active vacation. Zoologická záhrada Košice

Zoologická záhrada Košice

Košice

Zoologická záhrada Košice is the largest zoo not only in Slovakia, but in all of Central Europe. It extends over an impressive 289 hectares of the natural environment of Čierna Hora in Košice, in the Kavečany district, with approximately 75 hectares accessible to the public.

At present, more than 240 different animal species live in the zoo, representing the fauna of all continents. It opened its doors to visitors in 1986, following seven years of construction. At that time, visitors could view 23 animal species, mostly consisting of native Carpathian fauna. Over time, both the area open to the public and the number of individual animal species expanded to reach its current size and variety.

Some animal species cannot be found in any other zoo in Slovakia. These include, for example, Humboldt penguins, toco toucans, Andean condors, harbor seals, or Altai wapiti. However, the zoo also houses many very rare captive species. From this large selection, we can mention the North Chinese leopard, scimitar-horned oryx, Bhutan takin, or Tatra chamois. Among the other highlights of the Košice zoo are the largest aviary in Slovakia, as well as the largest brown bear enclosure among all zoos in Central Europe.

As the only zoo in Slovakia, it boasts an established botanical trail, which was gradually expanded to include other sections such as the Bird Trail, Beekeeping Trail, Floodplain Forest, and Geological Trail, which compares the Carpathian and Altai (Central Asia) mountain ranges. One section of the trail is also the Siberian ibex enclosure, which cannot be found anywhere else in Slovakia. You will also find interactive elements with geological and paleontological themes here.

Zoologická záhrada Košice can likewise pride itself on many breeding successes in terms of the number of reared offspring. It even holds an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records from 2002, when breeders achieved a unique milestone—bear quintuplets were born here. Since 2017, the zoo has been a full member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), which unites elite global zoos. In addition, it is an active member of other prominent organizations, including EAZA, UCSZOO, EARATA, IZE, and Species360.

Part of ZOO Košice is also the popular DinoPark, which has been open to visitors since 2013. Across an area of nearly 5 hectares, dozens of life-sized Mesozoic giants of our planet will amaze you. You can also visit a unique 3D cinema, have fun on the paleontological playground, or try the adrenaline swing.

You can reach the zoo from Košice by public transit (the terminal stop is ZOO). However, if you want to treat yourself and your children to a complete experience, we recommend booking accommodation in the area surrounding ZOO Košice and visiting other nearby attractions offered by the historic city of Košice. A selection of the nearest accommodation facilities can also be found on our website under the accommodation Košice-Kavečany and accommodation Košice sections.

Hvezdáreň a planetárium Medzev

Hvezdáreň a planetárium Medzev

Medzev

Who wouldn't know the town of Medzev located in the valley of the Bodva River on the northern edge of the Slovenský kras and on the southwestern edge of the Volovské vrchy? This small town, founded by German colonists in 1241, conceals many interesting things. One of them is Hvezdáreň a planetárium Medzev.

The town of Medzev became famous for the fact that former Slovak president Rudolf Schuster spent his childhood here, later also building the Múzeum kinematografie rodiny Schusterovcov alongside the Slovenské technické múzeum. Premonštrátsky kláštor

Premonštrátsky kláštor

Jasov

In the small village of Jasov, which administratively belongs to the Košice – okolie district, you will find a wonderful historical monument visited every year by a huge number of pilgrims and tourists. Premonštrátsky kláštor (Premonstratensian Monastery) is the largest Late Baroque building in Slovakia. Its history began back in 1228. Did you know that its premises house one of the most valuable libraries in Slovakia, containing approximately eighty thousand book volumes?

The sacred complex, dominated by Chrám sv. Jána Krstiteľa, together with the monastery garden, belongs among the most valuable monuments of historical and spiritual significance in Slovakia. Two symmetrically positioned monastery buildings stand on square footprints, between which is the structure of a single-nave church with two towers. Both wings of the monastery enclose courtyards with cloister gardens. The monastery has a symbolic 365 windows, matching the number of days in a year, 12 chimneys, symbolizing the twelve months, and 4 entrance gates, expressing the four seasons.

Among the most valuable parts of the interior of Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa is a collection of seven altars located along its perimeter. All the altarpieces came from the hands of the famous Austrian painter Johann Lucas Kracker. The main altar is dedicated to the patron saint of the church, and the altarpiece depicts the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The ceilings of the sanctuary are decorated with beautiful frescoes featuring scenes from the Bible. The largest painting in terms of dimensions fills the third vaulted bay. Its subject, Preaching in the Desert, depicts the preaching activities of Saint John.

The valuable library is located in the northern extended part of the church. Today, its library collection consists of a summary of theological, natural science, philosophical, geographical, historical, and fiction books written mainly in Latin, Hungarian, and German. Part of the original collection is located in Slovenská národná galéria, Matica slovenská, and Slovenské technické múzeum.

The monastery also includes an extensive monastery garden, which is one of Slovakia's unique features. In the past, it served as a place for meditation. From a historical perspective, since 1802, Opátstvo Rádu Premonštrátov has been the only living abbey of old religious orders in Slovakia. The Premonstratensians have lived in Jasov for almost 850 years. In 1970, the monastery complex was declared a national cultural monument.

Currently, Holy Masses are regularly celebrated in Chrám sv. Jána Krstiteľa, and in the summer season, during set hours, you can also take a guided tour. During the off-season, it is necessary to arrange your visit in advance by phone. The Premonstratensian Order is currently working on opening the historical library to the public. After the tour, you can take a pleasant walk to the ruins of Jasovský hrad castle and to Jasovská jaskyňa cave, which is the oldest accessible cave in Slovakia.

After a day spent exploring Slovenský kras, relax in a cozy apartment. Just one click on the page accommodation in Jasov will display the full range of accommodation near Premonštrátsky kláštor. Over the following days, take a trip to the historical center of Košice and get to know the attractions hidden in the capital of Eastern Slovakia.

Bobová dráha Košice

Bobová dráha Košice

Košice

Bobová dráha v košických Kavečanoch represents the first summer bobsleigh track in Slovakia, offering visitors a dynamic ride with views of the hills of Čierna hora and the surrounding nature.

The location is situated in the borough of Košice - Kavečany, in the district of Košice, in the Košický kraj region. The track is approximately 800 meters long and its stainless steel chute is designed with several sharp turns and terrain bumps that enhance the riding experience. The speed of the bobsleigh is controlled by the visitor using a handbrake, which allows for a smooth sightseeing ride as well as an adrenaline descent at speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. Transport to the top of the slope is provided by a lift, so the rider remains in the bobsleigh the entire time, which increases both comfort and the smooth flow of the attraction. The track is sensitively set into a grassy slope that is regularly maintained during the season, and benches and rest spots for spectators are built in the surroundings. Thanks to its location near the largest zoological garden in Central Europe, the bobsleigh track is an integral part of family trips within Košice. Operation is dependent on weather conditions and is usually suspended for safety reasons during rain or heavy frost. Night rides, which are occasionally organized during the summer holidays, add a mysterious atmosphere and a unique lighting character to the entire place.

What can you find here?

In the area, you will find a stainless steel bobsleigh chute with carts for one or two people and an elevator mechanism for transporting the bobsleighs. A ticket office, a snack bar offering drinks and fast refreshments, toilets, and a spacious sitting terrace are available. In the immediate vicinity, there is a parking lot and the main entrance to the area of Zoologická záhrada Košice.

Who is the place suitable for?

The attraction is ideal for families with children, while younger children (usually up to 6 years old) can ride accompanied by an adult in a two-seater bobsleigh. It is also sought after by young people and school trips who appreciate the adrenaline dimension of the ride and competitiveness when measuring achieved times. Given the nature of the activity, regular sportswear and sturdy footwear that facilitates getting into and out of the carts are recommended.

What can you visit in the surroundings?

Right next to the track is Zoologická záhrada Košice with the popular DinoPark, which are among the biggest tourist attractions in eastern Slovakia. You can also visit the Vyhliadková veža Hradová observation tower, from where there is a panoramic view of the entire city of Košice and Košická kotlina. For history lovers, the area of Košický hrad with an educational trail and open-air archaeological exhibitions is accessible nearby.

Prírodná rezervácia Červené skaly

Prírodná rezervácia Červené skaly

Poráč

Červené skaly is a locality in the territory of the Spišská Nová Ves district in the Košice Region, which has been declared a national nature reserve. It falls under the state nature conservation of the Slovenský raj. The reserve extends into the cadastral areas of the villages of Poráč, Olcnava, and Slovinky. The most beautiful part of the first-mentioned village's territory is precisely the Poráčska dolina, where you will also find a canyon up to 300 meters deep in places, featuring Červená skala. Despite its name, the latter is rather white from a distance. Červené skaly form the wall of the canyon of the Poráčsky potok, which is also the subject of protection. The canyon with a semi-karst character cuts through the Galmuská planina. This locality with rock, meadow, and forest communities is a typical representative of the biogeocenosis of the Slovenské rudohorie. It has an area of 390.5 ha and was declared a protected area back in 1981.

Protect nature, walk only on marked trails

The bedrock of the Poráčska dolina is formed predominantly by limestone, which, with the help of the Poráčsky jarok, enabled the formation of canyon-like valleys and numerous karst phenomena such as turrets, rock windows, waterfalls, and caves. Rising above the Poráčska dolina is the triple peak Slovinská skala. Due to the ruggedness of the relief, there are two areas in this territory that differ in their flora. In the north of the valley, beeches and thermophilic flowers mainly occur. In the southern part, fir-beech forests, spruce forests grow, and besides thermophilic vegetation, cold-loving mountain plants appear in the shadows. Dealpine pine bushes thrive on the rock ridges, and alder forests thrive in the floodplains of the Poráčsky potok. Among the protected species, one can find the Carpathian bellflower, the Moldavian monkshood, the alpine clematis, or the Slovak pasque flower. In the forests and meadows, red deer, roe deer, wild boar, lynx, fox, and especially in recent years, the wolf find their home.

The national natural monument Červené skaly is protected by the 5th and 4th levels of protection, therefore the territory can be visited only within marked hiking trails, cycling and cross-country skiing routes, and economic activity is prohibited here. The canyon of the Poráčsky potok is best accessible from the villages of Slovinky and Poráč. A foot crossing from one village to the other through the Poráčska dolina takes approximately two and a half hours and is an undemanding hike with an elevation gain of 319 m.

Make the most of your time spent in Červené skaly

In the vicinity of the nature reserve, there are many natural attractions such as the Šarkanova diera cave. For those who will have a taste for a bit of history after a walk in nature, the Markušovský hrad in Markušovce or the Banský skanzen in the village of Hnilčík are nearby. It is also not far to Spišská Nová Ves, which offers a zoological garden, or to Spišské Podhradie, where besides the Spišský hrad, there is also St. Martin's Cathedral (Katedrála sv. Martina).

Book your accommodation near the Červené skaly nature reserve and get to know this area more closely. You will be closest to the rocks if you stay in one of the cottages in Poráč. If these facilities are occupied, try browsing the offer of apartments in Spišské Vlachy or other accommodation in Jamník. A bit further away, in Spišské Podhradie, you will also find other quality accommodation options. Just choose a date and you can start looking forward to a wonderful trip.

Kúpele Štós

Kúpele Štós

Štós

Kúpele Štós is a climatic spa located in the village of the same name. It lies at an altitude of 650 m above sea level in southeastern Slovakia, in the Košice Region. A high number of sunny days ensures intense solar infrared and ultraviolet radiation, which aids healing. The spa is situated in picturesque nature full of conifers that release their healing essential oils into the air. On the border of Slovenský kras and Volovské vrchy, which form part of Spišsko-gemerský kras / Spišské rudohorie, spruce and fir forests predominate. Thanks to a climate classification with a stimulation degree of 1 (Swiss classification), it is ideal for fulfilling its purpose, namely the treatment of respiratory diseases. In addition to this indication, metabolic and endocrine disorders, oncological diseases, mental disorders, and occupational diseases are treated here.

Historically, the origin of Kúpele Štós is linked to traditional mining, which flourished in this area from the 14th century. Mining also supported the establishment of new manufacturing factories and the influx of foreign workers. It was the master cutler Róbert Komporday, who worked for the SANDRIK company, who promoted the effects of hydrotherapy. Upon his initiative, the construction of the spa began in 1882. As early as 1883, the first spa season was launched.

The boom of Kúpele Štós occurred during the tenure of Dr. Dezider Czirfusz, after 1888. During the winter season, he served in San Remo as an Austro-Hungarian consul and attracted a large clientele to Štós. For this reason, additional facilities were gradually built: Vila Mária, Vila Hungaria, Vila dr. Czirfusza, and Vila Tatra, followed by a dance hall and other buildings. The year 1963 was also significant for Kúpele Štós. For therapeutic purposes, the first classic Finnish sauna in the entire territory of then-Czechoslovakia was put into operation here, and thanks to reconstruction, it continues to serve guests to this day.

Kúpele Štós has been visited by many prominent figures. Mention can be made of Eduard Beneš, Emo Bohúň, Ivan Olbracht, Karel Hašler, Vlado Clementis, Beata Poničanová, Mac Frič, and Karel Konrád. Laco Novomeský composed the poem "Pod jedľou" here, Jaroslav Ježek performed concerts here, and Vojtech Löffler sculpted his statues here.

The spa has a long-standing tradition in speleotherapy. This is a truly unique treatment with excellent results that takes place in the nearby Jasovská jaskyňa. This natural inhalatorium helps build up body resistance. The vital water world, which is part of a stay at the spa, is a popular form of relaxation. Visitors can enjoy a complete complex of water and steam baths. Staying in one of the saunas has a beneficial effect, with choices including Finnish, herbal, and eucalyptus saunas. Other indoor attractions include vital rain, a water path, a tepidarium, and a hydromassage pool. Guests can swim in a classic modern swimming pool as well as in a relaxation pool with a counter-current, water spout, and massage jets.

Other procedures that visitors and patients can undergo at the spa include massages. The offer includes classic, reflex, sports, aromatherapy, and lymphatic drainage massages. Water procedures include steam baths, classic bubble baths, additive bubble baths with a dry wrap, whirlpool baths with a dry wrap, Scottish douches, and a Finnish sauna. Peat wraps and paraffin applications are also popular treatments. Rehabilitation, fitness training, and spinal traction are part of the therapy as well. Electrotherapy, applied through various procedures at the spa, has proven excellent effects. These include Bioptron light therapy, diadynamic currents, interference currents, shortwave and ultrashortwave diathermy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound, and Solux lamp treatment. Gas injections and various medical and laboratory examinations, including ECG and spirometry, are a matter of course.

A stay in the local forest park, which covers an area of 4.5 ha, has a beneficial effect on the soul. It is designated as a national cultural monument. A small stream with several cascades and a fountain flows through it. There are more than 200 different plants and exotic trees, many of which are rare. Visitors can sit by a sequoia or a Canadian maple, or admire azaleas and rhododendrons. Children will not be bored either, as the Macík children's playroom is built here for them. While the children play, parents can sit in the common room. Visitors also often spend their leisure time at the spa in the café and fitness center.

The surroundings of Kúpele Štós are rich in historic and natural monuments, so you certainly will not be bored after completing your medical treatments. Hrad Krásna Hôrka castle and Kaštieľ Betliar manor house will enchant you with their atmosphere. Nature lovers will enjoy Zádielska tiesňava gorge, as well as visits to Krásnohorská jaskyňa cave and Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa cave. Obišovský hrad

Obišovce

The remains of Obišovský hrad castle are accessible to tourists and history enthusiasts on the castle hill above the eastern Slovak village of Obišovce, in the district of Košice – okolie. The conical hill called Zámčisko in the Čierna hora mountain range was once home not only to a medieval castle, but also to an ancient hillfort from the Roman period. A place breathing with times long past, it offers a beautiful view of the wide surroundings in addition to a preserved castle wall and terrain remains of the castle grounds.

An ancient hillfort stood on the castle hill as early as the 2nd–3rd century, during the period of the Roman Empire. Proof of this lies in the rare archaeological artifacts that were discovered in these very places. Obišovský hrad castle was built here a whole millennium later. In the 13th century, the Aba family (Abovci) contributed to its construction. It was a simple castle complex consisting of a tower, a residential area, a moat, and a rampart. The castle probably did not last long; its destruction is assumed to have occurred in the 15th century, during the period of castle dismantling.

To this day, part of the castle wall has been preserved from the original castle, and the ramparts and remains of a deep moat are also visible to the naked eye. In addition to the remains of the hillfort and a unique atmosphere, the top of the castle hill offers a nice view of Slanské vrchy and the village of Obišovce. A shelter with seating and space for rest is prepared for tourists and visitors. You can reach the castle ruins via an easy walk directly from the village of Obišovce or from the nearby village of Ličartovce.

You can include a trip to the ruins of Obišovský hrad in the same itinerary with an ascent to the natural Vyhliadka Jánošíkova bašta viewpoint, a visit to Zoologická záhrada Košice, or recreation at Ružínska priehrada dam. That sounds like a diverse set of holiday experiences. All that remains is to book accommodation near Obišovský hrad and you can begin your preparations. Rafting na Hornáde

Košice

If you are an adventurer at heart and enjoy adrenaline-filled activities, try rafting the Hornád river on inflatable rubber boats, rafts. Rafting na Hornáde is among the highly sought-after summer activities every year. On an 8 km long waterway, you will conquer calm waters as well as gentler rapids while enjoying beautiful natural scenery. The Hornád river originates on the eastern slopes of the Krahulec mountain, flows through Slovenský raj, Košice, and continues through the Košická kotlina basin into Hungary. It is precisely the section Družstevná pri Hornáde – Lodenica Košice Anička that will provide an extraordinary experience that even families with small children can participate in.

The rafting trip begins on an interesting stretch of the river, in the surroundings of the small village of Družstevná pri Hornáde. Before the voyage itself, you will receive a short briefing that will familiarize you with controlling the inflatable boat. The raft is steered by a helmsman sitting in the back, while the other crew members only paddle forward. Controlling the vessel is not difficult at all; just a few strokes and you will figure out how to do it. Prepared like this, with a helmet on your head and a life jacket on your body, you can set out onto the water.

The rafted section falls into category WW I, which means very easy difficulty that even children from 3 years of age can handle. However, it is important that the child is not afraid of water and can sit still. Experienced instructors will oversee your safety the entire time. The starting point is Reštaurácia Čarda. The trip continues along a gentle, easy stretch that will offer you beautiful views of the surrounding nature. Quiet sections alternate with several smaller rapids. The larger rapid under the Ťahanovský most can be bypassed and walked past along the bank on foot. Your two-hour trip ends at the Lodenica Anička in Košice, where you will find an indoor children's playground with a small café.

The actual duration of the rafting depends on the water flow rate, the skills of the group, and the number and length of stops. If you are wondering what to bring with you, we have a few tips for you. In sunny weather, all you need is a swimsuit or functional t-shirt, shorts, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sturdy summer footwear. This is very important as it will protect you from sharp rocks. In your backpack, be sure to pack a change of clothes, a bottle of water, and a tasty snack. The Hornád river can be rafted between May 1st and October 31st.

Embark on an adventurous journey into the Middle Ages and visit the mysterious Košický hrad, which has resolutely resisted the test of time for seven centuries. The castle ruins stand on the low hill of Hradová, just a few kilometers northwest of Košice. You would look in vain for a mention of this mysterious castle in the chronicles. Only indirect references appear in written sources, so we can only assume whether it was actually a real castle or merely an unfinished fortification. What is certain, however, is that with its area of 6.5 hectares, the castle ranks among the largest in Slovakia.

Despite the fact that today only the remains of the foundations and perimeter walls remain standing at the top of Hradová hill, the construction has a very interesting backstory. Historians believe that Palatine Omodej Aba had the castle built at the beginning of the 14th century at a time when disputes between the famous noble family of Omodej and the town of Košice were at their peak. The ingenious palatine decided to start building a castle on foreign territory that he controlled and from where he could overlook Košice. When the disagreements were settled and the disputes ceased, the Omodej nobles pledged not to build castles without royal permission. This explains why the castle was never completed. Furthermore, in 1312, when the Battle of Rozhanovce took place on the plains below the castle, the largest knightly battle since the Mongol invasion of Hungary, the Omodej family lost the fortress after their defeat. Since then, Košický hrad changed its lords, and in 1430 the fortification fell to the town of Košice. Since the burghers of Košice cared more about extensive lands and estates, they did not finish the residence on Hradová hill, and the castle slowly fell into ruin. The castle grounds were revitalized, recently, but nevertheless, as part of the Košice – European Capital of Culture 2013 project.

Today you can walk around the ruins of the once grand castle fortification and admire the remains of robust walls over 3.5 meters wide. You will certainly also be surprised by the view of the tower ruins with an unconventional triangular floor plan. This type of bastion is very rare, and in Slovakia, you can find it at only two other castles, specifically at the castle in Vinné and in Uhrovec. The second dominant feature is the remnant of a circular tower, which in the past could have been as high as 20 meters. If you are curious about what view the castle lords might have enjoyed from the tower, climb the lookout tower located right next to the ruins of Košický hrad. From a height of 21 meters, a breathtaking view of the panorama of Slanské vrchy on one side and the largest town in Eastern Slovakia on the other will open up before you.

The entire ruins complex is managed by the Občianske združenie Castellum Cassovia, which built a castle stage, a natural amphitheater, and a visitor center with several original attractions here. Volunteers from the civic association have prepared for you a demonstration of medieval clothing, workshops for making wooden products, and a small blacksmith's forge. If you are interested in the archaeological research carried out on the castle grounds, view the photo gallery of archaeological work. For the little ones, a playground is built on the castle hill, and in the surroundings, you have the opportunity to have a small barbecue as a reward after the climb. And how do you get to the castle? You can set off to the ruins by public transport and then on foot directly from Košice. A pleasant walking stroll with a gentle incline will take you no more than 15 minutes. On the path to the grounds, various information boards with interesting facts about the site will accompany you.

So head out on a hike into the Middle Ages and enjoy the beautiful view of the surrounding scenery of the Košice a okolie region when visiting the castle. If one castle is not enough for you, take a hike to the nearby Hrad Sokoľ as well. And you can enhance your trip even further by visiting the largest zoo in Slovakia, Zoologická záhrada Košice.
