Mučín

Sensitively accessible caves without significant terrain modifications or electric lighting are a true treat for tourists and nature lovers. Such a well-preserved natural attraction is Mučínska jaskyňa. It is located in the mountainous environment of the village of Mučín, situated in the Lučenec district. The small and lesser-known village lies in the valley of the Mučínsky potok stream, in the western part of Cerová vrchovina. The mysterious underground with rare fossils and a small pond is a popular excursion destination for locals and visitors to this region.

The pseudokarst cave in Mučín is among the smaller, yet all the more remarkable underground formations. Its passage has a width of 2.5 m and a length of approximately 12 m. Interestingly, according to experts, it was likely formed by the weathering of a fallen charred tree covered in volcanic ash. Nature created this unique phenomenon over more than 19 million years. Scientific research was conducted here in 2004 and 2008. Subsequently, the cave was opened to the public for the purpose of learning about its natural and historical values. Inside, you can admire rare fossilized imprints of leaves and branches. In the rear section, you will also come across a water-filled cavity evoking a small pond.

The cave is easily accessible via an educational trail leading directly from the village. The route here passes through the valley under Bôbovec and is approximately 3 km long. Magnificent, centuries-old beech trees will enhance your easy walk. In front of the cave entrance, an educational board and wooden seating welcome you. Here you can rest and enjoy the sound of the forest. Do not forget to pack a good flashlight or headlamp for the journey through the stone passage.

If you are planning to wander through the Novohrad region, definitely do not skip this lesser-known yet all the more interesting cave in Mučín. You can combine a trip here with relaxation at the nearby thermal pool Novolandia, a tour of Fiľakovský hrad castle, or a hike to the unique, 9-meter-high Kamenný vodopádu waterfall. The variety of attractions in the surrounding area is truly diverse. It is worth booking accommodation near Mučínska jaskyňa cave and setting aside time to explore them.
