Hlohovec

Who wouldn't like the view of a night sky full of stars? You have certainly watched these glowing dots before and pointed your finger at Polaris or the Big Dipper constellation. Observing the night sky is one of the oldest activities in human history. In the past, people navigated by the stars and even used the starry sky as a calendar. If you are interested in astronomy, come to Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika v Hlohovci and look into the infinite universe through the second largest telescope in Slovakia.

The history of astrology itself is as old as humanity. Observing the stars and mapping them led people to tell various stories, which were often connected with supernatural beings. Only later did they begin to write down and compare the results of their observations, which led to the construction of observatories. Institutions where scientists observe, study, and analyze natural phenomena.

The desire for knowledge also stands behind the creation of this observatory. Several enthusiasts from the pharmaceutical plant at the time decided to establish an Astronomy Club under the Works Club ROH at Slovakofarma. The initial impulse was a sale of old, high-quality military optics for cheap. However, they arrived too late for that, and the equipment was already sold out. Nevertheless, this changed nothing in their decision, and on February 10, 1954, the history of astronomy in Hlohovec began to be written.

The mission of the club was to organize popular-science lectures and pass on knowledge about the universe to the youth. It was also tasked with carrying out professional astronomical observations and establishing a public observatory. The grand opening of Hvezdáreň a planetárium M. R. Štefánika took place on November 29, 1958. Alongside the observatories in Prešov, Levice, and Humenné, it thus became the fourth scientific research institute for astronomical observations in Slovakia established after World War II.

The observatory provides several programs for schools, kindergartens, and the general public, including observations, lectures, seminars, and screenings of various professional and educational documentary films. The hall with a capacity of 56 seats houses a high-quality Zeiss ZKP-2 planetarium, which allows projecting an artificial sky, the Sun and the solar system, the Moon, planets, and stars, as well as the Milky Way.

In addition, the observatory engages in observations and regularly publishes its findings in professional literature. Observational activities for both the public and scientific purposes are provided by the observation and research department. Do not forget to arrange your visit to this interesting place in advance by phone.

Hlohovec

Kaštieľ v Hlohovci, also known as Hlohovský or Hlohovecký zámok, is the most significant historical monument of this beautiful town in the Trnavský kraj region. It stands south of Hlohovec, on the edge of a large tree park with French terraces. Its tour can also be called "history in a modern outfit." Welcome, step inside and soak in the atmosphere.

Originally, Hlohovský hrad stood on this site, built in the 11th century. The first written mention of the original medieval castle Hlohovec appears in the so-called Zobor Document from 1113. From 1275, the castle belonged to the Aba family, when the Hungarian King Ladislaus IV granted it to the first feudal lord, Aba the Great. The castle had several owners. It was owned by Matthew Cák, the Ujlaky family, in the 15th century it became the seat of the Hussites, between 1524 and 1636 it was in the hands of the Thurzo family, and from 1720 it belonged to the Erdődy family. It was the Erdődy family who rebuilt the original castle into a Baroque manor house and brought it to the form we know today. In 1945, Soviet troops entered the town, and Hlohovecký kaštieľ became a hospital for Soviet soldiers. For a certain period after their departure, a garrison of the Czecho-Slovak army was stationed in the chateau. Today, the chateau is owned by the town of Hlohovec, which protects and continuously improves its historical jewel.

A combination of modern and historical? No problem in Hlohovec.

That history is boring? A visit to Hlohovecký zámok will convince you otherwise. It offers an extraordinary experience in the form of experiencing history through virtual reality. You will sit in 180-degree swivel armchairs, put on 3D glasses, and find yourself in the distant past. You will see how noble families lived and spent their time and recreational whims. Using tablets with augmented reality, you can view the unrestored areas of the chateau, in direct contrast with stunning graphical visualizations of their original state. You will be accompanied through the 60-minute tour by professionally educated guides who will provide high-quality information and add spicy stories and intriguing tidbits.

A popular place for walks is the French terraced gardens in the chateau park. And not only for lovers. Legends circulate among the residents of Hlohovec about escape tunnels from the chateau. They are assumed to be true. Ground-penetrating radar surveys in the chateau garden indeed revealed local cavities at a depth of about four meters. These were supposed to lead from the battalion towards the greenhouses along the edge of the slope.

An unforgettable experience is visiting the chateau in the evening hours, when the chateau lights up in seven colors thanks to magnificent and grand illumination that changes color and intensity. Thanks to a modern elevator and barrier-free sanitary facilities, the manor house is also accessible to visitors with mobility impairments. There is also a souvenir sale, which will remind you of this wonderful Hlohovec gem for a long time to come.
