Mariánske námestie Žilina

Mariánske námestie Žilina

Žilina

In the center of the regional city of Žilina, you will find the Renaissance Mariánske námestie , which locals also know as the Square Square (Štvorcové námestie). Treat yourself to a pleasant stroll here and take a look at the surrounding monuments located on it.

Slovakia's fourth largest city, located at the confluence of the Váh, Kysuca, and Rajčanka rivers, offers its visitors many attractions. One of them is Mariánske námestie , which forms the historic center of the city. In 1987, the entire city center was declared a Town Monument Reserve, and the 100 x 100 m square is part of it.

The square is typical for its Renaissance houses with the first floor projecting over the arcades. Long ago, craftsmen used to gather under them and establish their shops here. Today, you will find boutiques, restaurants, and pubs here. If you had the opportunity to visit some of the houses, you could admire the original Gothic cellars underground. The original gabled roofs on the houses burned down during the square's fire in 1886.

In the middle of the square stands a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary from 1738. Its pedestal contains a relief of Saint Florian, who is the patron saint of firefighters. Behind the statue, you can relax in a small park. You can also gaze at the city hall building. An interesting detail on its facade is a carillon that sounds on every top of the hour. In the western part of the square, there is the Roman Catholic Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul and a Jesuit monastery.

Today, the square is sought after not only by locals, but also by many foreign tourists who enjoy its indescribable atmosphere. Feel free to sit on a bench here and soak up the pleasant urban atmosphere. Or treat yourself to a refreshing drink on the terrace of local restaurants during hot days. You may be joined by conservatory students or well-known artists who use the space to organize various concerts, events, and gatherings.

To make your itinerary a bit more interesting, head to the Výstava Ikon exhibition. Both young and adult space explorers will be delighted by the nearby Pozorovateľňa Malý Diel Žilina observatory. You can admire modern art and support young artists at the Galéria Plusmínusnula gallery. Sports enthusiasts can get active in the pools of the Mestská kryvá plaváreň Žilina indoor swimming pool. You can also escape the world of everyday reality thanks to Virtuálna realita Žilina. Here, you can float in space, become a fearless superhero for a moment, or drive the best car.

Žilina is a breathtaking city in the Považie region that is well worth exploring. So that you don't have to rush home, feel free to find accommodation right on Mariánske námestie.
