Topoľčianky

In the well-known village of Topoľčianky in the Zlaté Moravce district, you will find a unique museum of horse breeding located in the world’s most prominent stud farm. Get a closer look at the overall social significance of horse breeding and discover the achievements of our national stud farm as well as individual horse breeds.

The rich tradition of breeding in Slovakia has been reflected not only in the national economic and social spheres, but also in breeding and sports circles. Horses have played a significant role in the history of human development. The domestication of these noble animals was an important milestone in our history. Horses contributed to economic development, ranging from simple agricultural activities to conquering new territories and acquiring power and wealth.

Based on the important social significance of horses, Národný žrebčín Topoľčianky decided in the 1980s to build the Múzeum chovu koní (Museum of Horse Breeding), also known as the Hipologické múzeum. Gradually, in addition to key information, documents, and photographs, a collection of riding, saddlery, and blacksmith accessories was gathered, forming an integral part of horse breeding. Upon visiting, you will be enchanted by a wide exposition of equipment displayed in the saddlery, wheelwright, and blacksmith workshops. A unique atmosphere is enhanced by the horse breeder's room, which, along with the kitchen, is furnished with historical furniture.

The largest collection is presented in the carriage house (kočiareň). The rich exposition of horse-powered means of transport is assembled from the most diverse carriages, wagons, sleighs, buggies, and even hearses. Visitors will learn various interesting facts about horse breeding and their importance in society. Furthermore, during your visit to the stud farm, you have the opportunity to tour individual breeds, visit the riding hall, or enjoy a horse or carriage ride.
