Degustácia vín v Tokajskej pivnici

Veľká Tŕňa

In the south of eastern Slovakia, in the village of Veľká Tŕňa, you will find unique wine cellars. Mysterious spaces filled with the finest Slovak wines are truly enchanting in the Vinohradnícka oblasť Tokaj wine region. Experience a tasting of Tokaj wines at a depth of 13 m. You can choose from up to three tasting options. Do not miss this unique experience.

Did you know that the cellars were originally created as refuges and hideouts for the settlers of the time, who hid in them during raids by Ottoman troops? Today, their purpose is much more delightful. In their spaces, they conceal liquid treasures. In the hand-dug medieval cellar in Veľká Tŕňa, young Tokaj wine is stored, which after years of aging becomes a sweet 3 to 6-putňový Tokaj. This delicious wine does not mature just anywhere. The necessary prerequisites include the important 5 Ps: climate, soil, puttony, cellar, and the right cellar mold. The Tokaj cellars can also be found on the list of National Cultural Monuments.

Tastings can be attended by groups starting as small as 4 members. Tastings are organized year-round. A tour together with a tasting must be booked in advance, either online or by phone. Take a glimpse into the mysterious cellar, whose atmosphere is completed by the glow of burning candles and walls covered in cellar mold. Taste the liquid treasures that this charming cellar has to offer. The three offered tasting variants differ in the number of sampled wines and, naturally, in the refreshments included with the tasting. In addition, larger groups can experience unique tastings of Tokaj or vintage wines. Although the cellar is located at the aforementioned depth of 13 m, even elderly or mobility-impaired visitors can enjoy the tasting, as the cellar is equipped with a passenger elevator.

Even the unforgettable King Louis XIV could not resist Tokaj wine. So come succumb to the golden drink yourself and enjoy the unforgettable atmosphere of the wine cellars. Book your accommodation near Degustácia vín v Tokajskej pivnici. You can admire the beautiful vineyards from the Rozhľadňa Tokaj observation tower in the village of Malá Tŕňa. The observation tower in the shape of a wine barrel brightens up the vast vineyards. You can recall a piece of history by visiting Hradný kaštieľ F. Rákociho II., which you will find in the village of Borša in the Trebišov district. Hradný kaštieľ F. Rákocziho II. - Borša

Borša

Accept our warm invitation to Hradný kaštieľ Františka Rákocziho II., located in the village of Borša, in the Trebišov district, in the south of the Zemplín region. This Renaissance manor house, where the aforementioned F. II. Rákoczi was born, will captivate you not only with its architecture, but also with the services you will find inside.

Head into the premises of the manor house during opening hours. Its origins date back to the mid-16th century, when, according to documents, it was built on older foundations of the original medieval water castle. It was commissioned here as a manor house by the Tokaj castle captain Zeleméri Kamarás. Only later, during the reign of Zuzana Loránttfy and Prince Juraj I Rákoczi, did the manor house become a water castle. Subsequently, it underwent several renovations.

The floor plan of the manor house is L-shaped. Right in front of its older section, you can see traces of a moat that likely belonged to the water castle. You may also notice a square corner bastion, which could be the remnant of a tower. In the center of the manor house on the ground floor, there is a semicircular arch portal with a rectangular frame. This very feature could have served in the past as space for a portcullis or a drawbridge. Inside the manor house itself, you can notice flat ceilings and Renaissance vaults.

During a walk through the stunning grounds, you will also catch sight of a robust bronze bust of František II. Rákoczi. This is mainly because the local residents wanted to commemorate the birth of the leader of the last anti-Habsburg uprising, František Rákoczi II. He saw the light of day here in 1676, though he spent his life at the castle in Mukačevo.

Treat yourself to wonderful experiences at the manor house. Take a look into the ethnographic exhibition with Rákoczi memorial rooms. Thanks to virtual reality, you can experience firsthand what it was like to live at the time of this prince's birth. Are you more the type of person who prefers something more engaging? Then visit the Escape room right in the manor house, where game participants plan the prince's escape before his execution. It is not only schools that appreciate the panoramic projection in a hall with a capacity of 15 people. In short films, you can watch the life of this ruler or the surroundings of the village.

All you need to do is park your car in front of the manor house and enjoy this unique environment. The grounds of the manor house are accessible free of charge, while entry into the manor house requires advance booking. Along with a visit to the manor house, we recommend exploring other attractions in the region as well. However, keep in mind that it is wise to book accommodation near Hradný kaštieľ F. Rákocziho II. - Borša in advance.

Water tourism enthusiasts can go canoeing or kayaking on the surrounding rivers. Hrad Kráľovský Chlmec - Csonkavár

Hrad Kráľovský Chlmec - Csonkavár

Kráľovský Chlmec

If you are also among the lovers of history and cultural monuments, you cannot miss a visit to the ancient Hrad Csonkavár in Kráľovský Chlmec during your visit to the Zemplín region. This small town is located almost on the southeastern border of Slovakia at an altitude of 130 m above sea level, at the foot of Chlmecké vrchy, approximately 30 km south of Trebišov.

The castle was created by rebuilding a manorial stronghold in 1526. The original medieval stone structure was likely not even fortified with walls to fulfill a defensive function. The building was initially two stories high and served as a kind of predecessor to a manorial manor house – a stronghold. Nowadays, you can admire only partially preserved cellar spaces and frail remnants of castle walls with vaults, small windows, and corners of the structure built from hewn tuff blocks. The castle has been in this state for centuries, and perhaps that is why it received the name Csonkavár, which translated from Hungarian means Castle of Ruins.

Interestingly, the castle was among the shortest-lived castles in the territory of Slovakia and the entire Kingdom of Hungary. In its original form, it stood for only 22 years. In 1548, King Ferdinand I had it demolished. Only a few written mentions of the castle have been preserved, which is why its history is shrouded in a veil of mystery. In the 18th century, descendants of Palatine Juraj Turzo had a manor house built in Chlmec, which stands here to this day.

You can reach the castle either on foot or directly by car. We recommend this option only to visitors with reduced mobility, as there is not much space for parking on the relatively steep castle hill. A tour of these ruins is accessible year-round and free of charge. If you are lucky, you can also visit a cultural event at the nearby municipal amphitheater.

You can continue your tour of the region with a visit to the stone castle in Veľký Kamenec or the castle manor house of F. Rákoczi II in the village of Borša. Lovers of beautiful views will appreciate the ascent to the Rozhľadňa Tokaj lookout tower in Malá Tŕňa. And while you are in this renowned region, be sure not to miss a wine tasting in a Tokaj cellar. After that, simply direct your steps to accommodation near Hrad Kráľovský Chlmec – Csonkavár.

Energized by good wine and in high spirits from the atmosphere of Tokaj cellars carved into tuff rock, you will certainly appreciate not having to travel home. You can choose from several accommodation facilities. Apartments in Kráľovský Chlmec are popular, offering plenty of privacy, as is private accommodation. Thanks to stories from our local accommodation providers, you will learn even more interesting facts. You can find the complete offer of lodging options on our portal.

Múzeum a Kultúrne centrum južného Zemplína

Trebišov

The landmark of Trebišov is a charming Baroque-Neoclassical manor house that was once a magnificent residence of the noble Andráši family (Andrášiovci). The town of Trebišov, the center of Southern Zemplín, is located in the southwestern part of the Východoslovenská nížina lowland. Part of the region is the world-famous Tokaj wine region, offering first-class quality wines. The Trebišov district offers many options for recreation and relaxation, whether you set off for a walk through nature reserves of floodplain forests, fruit orchards, or the charming hills of the Slanské vrchy mountains. However, we invite you to take a tour of a museum that will tell you about the rich and interesting history of this picturesque district.

Manor house and its history

The manor was built on the remains of the local castle Parič by Count Imrich Csáky in 1786. The Andráši family inherited the residence in the first half of the 19th century and rebuilt the property in Neo-Renaissance style, without neglecting the extensive garden. The new owners transformed it into a beautiful French park with a rich representation of exotic tree species. The Andráši family also had a Neo-Gothic family tomb built in their park, as was the tradition among upper classes in the 19th century. At the beginning of the First World War, the furnishings of the manor house were transported to other Andráši residences in Budapest and Tiszadob. After the Second World War, the manor served until 1978 as a hospital with a polyclinic, and after a subsequent reconstruction, the Vlastivedné múzeum museum (established in Sečovce as early as the 1950s) moved into the premises of the former manor house in 1981. Since 2012, the museum bears a new name, Múzeum a Kultúrne centrum južného Zemplína v Trebišove. The institution specializes in the history of agriculture and Tokaj viticulture, collecting and displaying many historically valuable items presenting the history of the Trebišov district.

Expositions

The museum offers exceptionally interesting expositions that will delight all age groups and enthusiasts of various fields. Whether you are interested in traditional crafts, the history of agriculture, tractors, archaeology, folk clothing, or like to enjoy a golden drink, you will be thrilled by everything you can see in the complex. For example, the exposition of the history of agriculture in Eastern Slovakia documents the development of this industry from the Neolithic period to the present day. Machinery fans will appreciate the exposition of the steam plowing set or the exposition of agricultural machinery and mechanisms from the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Have you ever wondered how grain is processed? In that case, you will certainly be interested in the exhibition documenting the history of grain threshing from flails to modern combine threshing. If you want to learn more about the traditions of Southern Zemplín, you cannot miss the exposition presenting traditional disappearing and extinct crafts of Zemplín, especially rope making, blacksmithing, and wheelwrighting.

Artistic souls will enjoy the exposition of folk wood carving and sculpture of Zemplín, or the exhibition presenting folk clothing of Southern Zemplín from the first half of the 20th century. On a different note, the exhibition Andrášiovci na Trebišovsku reveals the history and manors of the noble family. And finally, one of the museum's greatest treasures is hidden in the cellar space. Located there is an exposition of Tokaj viticulture and winemaking in Slovakia. It is complemented by a unique archive of Tokaj wines, presenting producers of this unique beverage and collecting new samples. If the rich selection of permanent expositions were not enough for you, you will certainly be captivated by one of the thematic exhibitions of fine arts, phillumeny, ethnography, history, numismatics, or art. After visiting the exhibitions, you can indulge in a tasting of Tokaj varietal, quality, and selection wines at the Tokajská vináreň u Andrássyho wine cellar.

Exclusive attractions

If you are planning a group visit or a teambuilding event, the museum offers original attractions. Sign up for rope weaving and test your skills in rope making, an ancient Zemplín craft. The museum staff are Slovak record holders in this discipline, on August 12, 2011, they made a rope 103 meters long, thereby obtaining a certificate from the book of Slovak records. Another activity available for group bookings is home butter production in a butter churn, so-called churning. This was once a traditional activity in Zemplín households. At the end of your visit, you will have a unique and delicious gift, a knob of butter made from fresh homemade milk. Couples in love will also be pleased to know that the manor house, in its charming chambers combining past and present as well as art and tradition, offers wedding ceremonies as well as wedding and group photography sessions. As the manor house was completely renovated between 2015 and 2016, it has regained its ancient charm and 19th-century romance.
