Jasenská dolina consists of two ski resorts. First, you will come across the Kašová resort, located right at the entrance of the valley. The resort is located approximately 2.5 km from the village of Belá – Dulice, but a well-maintained road leads here.

What does Kašová offer? Snack bars, ski schools, rental shop, up to 7 km of cross-country skiing trails, and high-quality service. In short, everything you will need during your skiing trip. And now onto the main thing, the slopes. These are predominantly blue, which means the least demanding. There are only two sections where the slope is steeper. It is an ideal terrain for families with children and inexperienced skiers. Transport is handled by 6 ski lifts and 1 four-seater chairlift, so you can forget about long queues. The chairlift in particular has contributed to improving the skiing quality, and with a length of almost 650 meters, it is the resort's longest transport facility. The longest slope in this section is exactly 800 meters long. The entire resort is equipped with artificial snowmaking and is even fully illuminated. You will spend time on skis not only during the days, but during the evenings as well.

If you are a more demanding skier and the slopes of Kašová are not steep enough, continue along Jasenská dolina for about one more kilometer. This is where the Lehota resort is located. However, check in advance whether it is open, as there is only one 700-meter-long lift here and the resort does not have artificial snowmaking. You must therefore rely solely on natural snow. In favorable conditions, medium-difficulty slopes await you, the longest of which reaches up to 1,100 meters. This will be appreciated by more experienced skiers as well.

Between the two resorts, Lehota and Kašová, there are beautiful trails for cross-country skiers. Furthermore, the surrounding nature of Veľká Fatra directly invites you to explore it. Borišov and Ploská are popular tourist attractions throughout the year. In winter, you can try them with ski touring skis or snowshoes, for example. If you are looking for a moderately difficult route, you can choose between the enduro trail EN-V or the freeride trail Devil’s trail, which share a common finish. The name of the last trail, Lážo – Plážo, hints at its easy difficulty. Within the complex, you can comfortably refresh yourself after your ride with delicious food or a refreshing drink.

The summer season attracts visitors to Jasenská dolina not only for bicycle riding, but also for hiking opportunities in this valley full of natural beauty. An excellent tip is a hike up the aforementioned Lysec with an altitude of 1,381 m above sea level, which you can conquer in approximately 5 hours. The medium-difficulty hike will take you along an 11 km long route. After the ascent, you will be rewarded with endless views of Národný park Malá Fatra, Národný park Veľká Fatra, or even the Tatry and Kriváň. You can also admire the Turiec region from a lower elevation, simply visit Rozhľadňa na Kalníku or Rozhľadňa na Tŕní. Kuneradský zámok is situated at the mouth of the Svitačová dolina valley, near the village of Kunerad. Despite this, it remains a frequently visited tourist attraction in the Rajecká dolina valley, mainly because hiking trails leading to the popular peaks of the Lúčanská part of Malá Fatra pass right next to it.

The new owners, who live in Switzerland, are striving to save the chateau and preserve this treasure for future generations. The ongoing restoration work can be observed from the adjacent chateau park and meadows, where you can enjoy a pleasant family walk. In the park, you will also find the Pamätník SNP (SNP Monument), which was renovated for the public in 2020.

Kuneradský zámok saw the light of day in 1912, originally serving as a hunting lodge for Count Ballestrem and his family, who used it primarily during the hunting season. The chateau was built with elements of French Art Nouveau. Towers, arcades, terraces, and exterior staircases gave this romantic building its charming appearance. The interior was also lavishly furnished, and the chateau even had its own water-powered power plant. The Count's family also established a chapel inside the chateau. During the Slovak National Uprising, the chateau was occupied by partisans and subsequently burned down by the Fascists. After reconstruction, the premises served as a treatment facility for the nearby Kúpele Rajecké Teplice spa.

The masonry of the western tower is preserved at the castle, towering to a great height. The upper castle was set between two towers. In the lower castle, the corner block masonry as well as the remnants of building walls are preserved.

The history of Blatnický hrad dates back to the year 1300, when its first owner was Peter of Brezovica. It was built on the popular trade route magna via. The last mention of it being inhabited was from the year 1790, after which it gradually fell into ruin and decayed. After all, princes preferred a more comfortable lifestyle in a manor house rather than in a castle.

Many tales and legends are connected with the castle as such. One of the popular ones includes the one about the young man Blatoň. This young man saved the lives of Pribina and Mojmír during a hunt for aurochs. When the improperly hit animal charged at these two prominent figures, Blatoň rushed at it and killed it with a dagger. For saving their lives, he received a beautiful sword and land for the future castle. Other legends include the one about a cruel castle lord who, after seizing another man's bride and growing tired of her, had her killed and walled her son into the castle. The child's crying can still be heard today within the castle walls. Or about the Templars who walled up a monk in the castle. Supposedly, treasure hunters found a walled-up male skeleton in the ruins of the castle. Who knows who it belonged to and whether these legends are true.

The castle as such is truly very interesting and shrouded in a veil of mysteries from the past. No wonder, as prominent families such as the House of Luxembourg or the Révay family lived here. The cave has two passages, the Garnet Passage (Granátová chodba, named after garnet finds from the SNP) and the Column Passage (Stĺpová chodba), behind which lies the Pool Hall (Jazierková sieň).

An interesting fact about the cave is that it was inhabited by humans in the Bronze Age. The cave thus ranks among the highest-altitude inhabited caves in Slovakia. It is especially worth seeing during the winter season. This is precisely because the cave becomes a home for bats at that time. Note that remains of the cave bear were also found here.

Have you ever traveled from western to eastern Slovakia through the Považie region and wondered about the name of the majestic castle ruins directly above the road? It was likely Hrad Strečno. It is one of many along the Váh River and is a popular tourist destination worth stopping for.

You will find the castle above the small village bearing the same name, Strečno. It lies near the Váh River, just a short distance east of Žilina. Strečno creates an unforgettable backdrop on a high rock, and you certainly won't miss it.

To discover all the beauties of this monument, you will have to climb to an altitude of 420 meters above sea level. However, it is well worth it. You will learn about its rich history as well as its present. Interestingly, the castle is not that old. The first written mention of it dates back to 1316, when likely only a castle tower stood here. Even so, it is one of the younger castles. It protected an important trade route through Považie, and tolls were collected here.

The founding of the castle was carried out by the Balaša family. The castle later became royal property. It was managed by none other than the famous Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. Later, it came into the hands of the Pongrác family. An interesting fact is that this family also managed the nearby Starý hrad, giving them control over everything and everyone who entered Považie. Afterwards, its owners changed very rapidly, and the castle passed through many hands. Perhaps the most famous owner was Ján Zápoľský.

Later, the castle became a center for rebels. Imperial troops had a significant upper hand and damaged the castle. This happened in the 17th century, and Strečno fell into ruin for many years after that. Reconstruction began only in 1978, and it was opened to the public in 1995.

One of the owners of the castle was František Vešeléni. This name probably means nothing to any of you, but his wife had a more renowned name: Žofia Bošňáková. 45 years after her death, her body was found intact, even though it was not mummified or embalmed! The locals therefore began to consider her a saint, and her body was displayed in nearby Teplička nad Váhom. Unfortunately, in 2004, a perpetrator set it on fire and destroyed her body. After the restoration of the remains, Žofia's body has been on display again since 2012. Another interest of the castle is that the famous movie Dragonheart was filmed here. An exhibition of the Považské múzeum v Žiline is housed inside the castle, and you will also be captivated by regular cultural events or night tours.

Asfaltové jazero is located near the small village of Nezbudská Lúčka. The site is known for its rich deposits of natural asphalt. At the same time, the only quarry in Europe for its extraction operated here in the past. Mining began here even before the First World War; according to chronicles, 5,000 cubic meters of asphalt were extracted annually from this quarry up until 1928. This mixture was also used for the construction of the road between Strečno and Vrútky. Mining ended here in 1962, as the deposit was close to depletion and groundwater began to seep into the tunnels, gradually flooding them.

The depth of the flooded quarry is currently 12 meters. In the past, it was up to 18 meters, but the bottom is now covered with a thick layer of mud. Swimming in the lake is forbidden; however, many people violate this rule, and several have already paid the price. The water near the surface warms up pleasantly, but the lower currents are cold, forming whirlpools that can pull a swimmer under. The lake is often used by divers, who have found, for example, a World War II grenade at the bottom. They could also tell you about the secrets of the flooded tunnels, where various reminders of former mining remain and where trout allegedly swim, which are white and blind due to life in the dark.

Asfaltové jazero is a popular spot for fishermen. The surrounding area offers interesting walks during which, on warm days, you can observe natural asphalt on the quarry walls melting with the heat and slowly trickling down. As part of the former quarry, the chapel of the patron saint of miners, St. Barbara, still stands here. Several mining tunnels have also been preserved, but entering them is not recommended as they could collapse at any time. You can reach the lake from the village of Nezbudská Lúčka on foot or by car.

If you spend your holiday in this area, you should definitely stay for a few days, because Asfaltové jazero is not the only attraction in the vicinity, quite the contrary. If your goal is to discover history, the ideal choice for you will be hrad Strečno, Starhrad, or Zemľanky and the memorial to the partisans of the Dibrov group in the village of Poriadie. Necpalské vodopády cascade along the course of the Necpalský potok stream. It flows through the Necpalská valley, located in the Veľká Fatra mountain range. Tourists often combine their trips, and their route also leads into Blatnická dolina and Gaderská dolina valleys. Heading upstream along the creek, they frequently set out towards the summit of Ploská. Regardless of the starting direction, visitors make their way to the waterfalls all year round. The length of the route as well as its difficulty depends on the point you start from.

Most often, the starting point is the village of Necpaly. From there, it takes approximately two hours to reach the waterfalls by following the blue hiking trail. Following the same color, but from the opposite direction, from above, you can descend to the waterfalls from the ridges of the Veľká Fatra range. From the mountain cabin Chata pod Borišovom, it will take you about half an hour less. In the case of the second mentioned access route, be careful of avalanches in the winter. An asphalt road leads between the mountain hut and the village of Necpaly almost the entire way, offering an easy hiking walk, but you can also complete it by bicycle. Right by the road are the waterfalls Vodopád Revúcky mlyn and Druhý (or Dolný) Necpalský vodopád, while to reach the others, you need to step off the main road.

As we already mentioned in the introduction, and as follows from the name after all, there are several waterfalls. The first waterfall in the valley is the approximately 4 m high Vodopád Revúcky mlyn. It is the most prominent of all and is located in the Balcierovo area. It is followed by the approximately 1.2 m high Malý Necpalský vodopád, which lies at the point where the Prierastlé stream flows into Necpalský potok. Next in order is the approximately 2 m high Dolný Necpalský vodopád, for which the name Druhý Necpalský vodopád is also used. The group is closed by the approximately 4.5 m high Prvý Necpalský vodopád, which is also known as Horný Necpalský vodopád and Veľký Necpalský vodopád. Quite a chaos in the names, isn't it? Indeed, even the locals had to get used to which waterfall is called what for a long time.

Whether the names are confusing or not, the view of the waterfalls is definitely worth it. He established a school for children from Teplice here so they would not have to commute far. During World War I, however, the spa declined, and part of it was additionally destroyed by a flood.

Only with the change of owner in 1925 did the construction of spa houses begin and Kúpele Rajecké Teplice acquired the form in which we know them today. In 1989, Rajecké Teplice received town status. In the famous small town, which is incidentally the 4th smallest in Slovakia, the statue „Žena po kúpeli“ was also installed to represent it.

Slovenský betlehem is a masterpiece by the woodcarver Jozef Pekar. You can admire it in the Žilina district, in Rajecká Lesná, more precisely in the House of God's Mercy (sometimes referred to as the House of the Nativity of Christ). Its name is not accidental; in addition to the commonly depicted birth of Christ, it also portrays the history of the Slovak nation. Besides the best-known sceneries that are inextricably linked with Slovakia, master Pekar also captured the everyday life of Slovaks in the past.

What is fascinating is that the betlehem is not static, but the figures move, thereby adding to the overall authenticity of the masterpiece. This also enables people who do not like reading about history and customs to absorb this interesting part of our history. Because just as children stand in awe and with open mouths in front of Slovenský betlehem, adults often stand there with bated breath as well.

Jozef Pekar began working on this woodcarving masterpiece after his retirement in 1980. It took him a long 15 years to complete it. The work was ceremonially opened to the public on November 26, 1995, back then still without the Eastern Slovak and Western Slovak regions. However, those were carved and added to the work in subsequent years. Every Slovak location is blessed. The dimensions of the betlehem are 8.5 m in length, 2.5 m in width, and 3 m in height. Altogether, there are about 300 figures on the area, of which approximately half are static and the other half move. Some are working, others are having fun. If you look closely, you will even see a bear running by.

Národný park Veľká Fatra is the youngest Slovak national park. Territorial-wise, it belongs predominantly to the Žilinský kraj region, but it also extends into the northern part of the Banskobystrický kraj region. The national park as well as its buffer zone occupy most of the territory of the Veľká Fatra mountain range, which is part of the Outer Western Carpathians. However, the park also covers the southwestern part of the Starohorské vrchy mountains. Veľká Fatra - home of the capercaillie

Since 1972, the Chránená krajinná oblasť Veľká Fatra protected landscape area existed in this territory, which gained a higher level of protection when it was declared a national park on April 1, 2002. Up to 90% of the park's area is covered by beech forests and ridge pastures dating back to the period of the Wallachian colonization (15th to 17th century). Scots pine also occurs in the remaining territory, and Harmanecké údolie is the richest locality for the occurrence of the European yew in Central Europe. Veľká Fatra can also boast a rare endemic species - the Tatra cyclamen (cyklámen fatranský). It grows only in this area and in part of the Nízke Tatry. Thanks to the inaccessibility of some steep slopes, primeval forest ecosystems without human intervention are also found here. The rugged terrain and the diversity of meadows, pastures, cliffs, and valleys create conditions not only for rich flora but also for fauna. Bears, wolves, lynxes, and wildcats occur here in abundance. Highly endangered species of gallinaceous birds - the black grouse and the capercaillie - also live here.

The highest peak in the national park, at an elevation of 1,596 m above sea level, is Ostredok. Within the territory of Veľká Fatra, there are several dozen small-scale protected areas. National nature reserves include, for example, Jánošíkova kolkáreň or Rakšianske rašelinisko. Perlová jaskyňa is a national nature monument. Also interesting are the natural monuments Matejkovský kamenný prúd or Travertínové terasy Bukovinka. As a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area, Veľká Fatra is included in the European network of protected areas NATURA 2000.

Šútovské jazero, also known as Kraľovianske jazero, is actually a flooded quarry located in the village of Kraľovany, near Šútovo. It lies beneath the peaks of the Malá Fatra mountains, practically on the main route between Martin and Ružomberok. There is a large designated parking area by the lake, which is free of charge.

Since the lake was formed by flooding a quarry, it has no inflow or outflow. The beautiful turquoise water reaches depths of up to 15 meters. Šútovské jazero is often referred to as the "Slovak Plitvice" because the surrounding terraced slopes resemble this Croatian park, which you may know from western movies such as The Treasure of Silver Lake. Although the quarry is a popular recreation spot for both local and international tourists, swimming is at your own risk. At the lake, you will find two larger beaches and a few smaller ones, one of which is fenced off and designated for nudism enthusiasts. Refreshment stands are available on some of the beaches.

The climb takes 4 and a half hours, with an elevation gain of 1,223 meters. However, when covered in snow, the route is difficult to traverse.

The peak of Chleb is part of a national nature reserve. Rare plants and animals can be found here, with protected dwarf pine communities and alpine meadows being particularly significant.
